Small, gracile mostly tridactyl tracks from the Middle Jurassic of Henan Province represent the first example of the ichnogenus Anomoepus from this region. They represent a growing number of reports (at least eight) of this ichnogenus from the Jurassic of China. In conjunction with Changpeipus and Eubrontes, they appear characteristic of known global footprint biochrons. Anomoepus indicates the presence of ornithischian dinosaurs that are often scarce or unknown from skeletal remains in coeval deposits. When first discovered, these tracks were informally referred to as bird tracks. This interpretation reflects convergence between small Jurassic Anomoepus and avian theropod tracks that are hitherto known only from the Cretaceous and the Cenozoic. However, most Anomoepus are larger and more robust than any hitherto known Mesozoic avian tracks.  相似文献

Cenozoic bird tracks are known largely from North America, Europe, and the Middle East. There have been no reports of Cenozoic bird tracks from East Asia. This paper describes a series of two trackways produced by a galliform-like or gruiform-like bird from the Oligocene to Early Miocene of Tibet. The tracks are represented by tracings collected from a coal mine in Shigatse, Tibet, during the late 1970s. The tracks are comparable to Ornithoformipes and Pavoformipes and likely represent a medium-sized to large cursorial or flightless bird. In relation to modern bird tracks, the tracks bear a striking resemblance to those produced by the North American Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) except that M. gallopavo tracks often possess a small, elevated hallux impression. Due to the fact that these are tracings, however, a hallux may have been present and simply have been overlooked. The Shigatse trackways were, unfortunately, lost when the mine was closed and then backfilled during the 1980s, and there is little to no likelihood of recovery. Casts can be catalogued as holotype specimens but tracings cannot; however, all the original tracings have been donated to a public institution by their discoverer, Yimin Wu.  相似文献

A rich variety of vertebrate footprints is known from a number of Upper Eocene to Lower Miocene localities of Navarre (western Pyrenees). The sediments were deposited in a wide range of depositional environments, from marginal marine to diversified terrestrial. Abundant bird tracks have been found in the coastal deposits of the Upper Eocene Liedena Sandstone of the Yesa and Itzagaondoa areas. Ciconiiformes-like (Leptoptilostipus pyrenaicus) and Charadriiformes-like (Charadriipeda ichnospp.) footprints have been recognized. Mammal ichnites have been discovered in the Oligocene and Lower Miocene deposits of Navarre. Equoid perissodactyl ichnites similar to those of Plagiolophustipus occur in the Oligocene fluviatile rocks of the Mués Sandstone of Olexoa and the Rocaforte Sandstone near Oibar and Sada. Trackways of entelodontids (Entelodontipus) are known in fluviatile-palustrine beds of the Oligocene Mués Sandstone of Olkotz. Additionally, bird (Charadriiformes-like) tracks are known in fluviatile-palustrine floodplain deposits of the Lower Miocene Ujué Formation of Los Arcos. In the same area, the Desoio and Los Arcos outcrops have also yielded perissodactyl trackways of possible Equoidea. Trackways of rhinocerotids (?) and artiodactyls (possibly Pecoripeda) are described from the Lower Miocene (Ramblian) palustrine limestones marginal to the Lerín Formation of Kaparroso and from alluvial fan deposits of the Uncastillo-Perdón Formation of Altzorritz, respectively.  相似文献

Cheliceratichnus lockleyi ichnogen. nov. et ichnosp. nov. is a new ichnotaxon of arthropod resting trace (cubichnium) from the Lower Jurassic (Hettangian) East Berlin Formation in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. The trace fossil is preserved as showing many of the external anatomical features of the exoskeleton, which resemble those of some chelicerates, notably sun spiders (Solifugae). The resting trace is directly associated with a trackway of the ichnospecies Acanthichnus cursorius Hitchcock. This is the first described fossil resting trace of a solifugan-like arthropod, and the first direct evidence of a trackmaker of A. cursorius.  相似文献

Abstract. Tridactyl bird footprints preserved in Lower Eocene sandstone of the Chuckanut Formation in Whatcom County, Washington, USA, were made by a species of giant ground bird that walked along the subtropical lowland riverbank. The morphology and age of the tracks suggest the track maker was Diatryma (? = Gastornis). Although these birds have long been considered to be predators or scavengers, the absence of raptor‐like claws supports earlier suggestions that they were herbivores. The Chuckanut tracks are herein named as Rivavipes giganteus ichnogenus and ichnospecies nov., inferred to belong to the extinct family Gastornithidae.  相似文献

A diverse assemblage of dinosaur and bird tracks from Niobrara County, Wyoming, represents the first vertebrate ichnofauna reported from the bone-rich Lance Formation (Maastrichtian, Upper Cretaceous). The ichnofauna includes a hadrosaur track with skin impressions; three theropod track types, including the tetradactyl track Saurexallopus zerbsti (ichnosp. nov.); a tridactyl dinosaur footprint with a fusiform digit III; possible Tyrannosaurus tracks; four distinctive avian ichnites; and invertebrate traces. The footprints are generally well-preserved and so offer a unique insight into the ecology of a small river valley during the Maastrichtian.

Saurexallopus zerbsti ichnosp. nov. from the Lance is similar to Saurexallopus lovei recently reported from the Maastrichtian, Harebell Formation, of northwestern Wyoming, but is represented by much better material, facilitating amendment of the ichnogenus. Skeletal equivalents for Saurexallopus are not currently known. Similarly, the tridactyl track with fusiform digit III is similar to footprints reported from the coeval Laramie Formation of Colorado and may also be similar to ichnogenus Ornithomimipus from the Edmonton Group of Alberta (though not necessarily of ornithomimid affinity). The hadrosaurian track with the skin impression is reminiscent of a similar ichnite reported from the Maastrichtian, St. Mary River Formation in Alberta, which is herein named Hadrosauropodus langstoni as part of a reassessment of Cretaceous ornithopod track ichnotaxonomy. Such correlations demonstrate the utility of tracks for local or regional biostratigraphy (palichnostratigraphy) in western North America. It is also clear that tracks add to our knowledge of the composition and distribution of dinosaurian and avian components of Maastrichtian faunas. In particular the bird tracks indicate a diversity of at least four species, one of which was a semi-palmate form, hitherto unknown in the ichnological record and named Sarjeantichnus semipalmatus.  相似文献

A recently described Erpetopus trackway bearing unusual claw and belly-drag marks ostensibly indicates an obligatory sprawled posture and belly-walk in the locomotion of small captorhinids. Here, the ichnology of the blue-tongued skink (Tiliqua scincoides) is investigated in order to identify features of a trackway produced by a lizard in continuous belly-walk. Comparisons between T. scincoides and Erpetopus tracks tested whether the locomotory pattern observed for T. scincoides resembles that of small captorhinid track makers. Characteristic features of the T. scincoides track include: (1) a belly-dragging mark, (2) claw scratch marks produced during the early stance phase, and (3) claw drag marks produced by the forelimb during the swing phase. Trackway parameters did not correlate with track maker velocity, rendering inference of velocity for belly-dragging track makers problematic. This result was probably caused by increased substrate influence on locomotor speed because of belly contact with the ground. The track characteristics of T. scincoides match those recently described for Erpetopus and thus corroborate the notion of a similar pattern of locomotion for small captorhinids.  相似文献

A 19 m thick package of well-sorted lowermost Jurassic (Hettangian-Lower Sinemurian?) sandstones within the Shemshak Formation of the southeastern Alborz Mountains displays features characteristic of foreshore to upper shoreface environments such as tabular bedding, low-angle lamination, trough cross-stratification, parting lineation, and oscillation ripples. In contrast to most other beach successions recorded in the literature the sandstones contain a trace fossil assemblage characterised by low abundance but comparatively high diversity. The assemblage, comprising 14 ichnotaxa, is dominated by Palaeophycus heberti, Rhizocorallium irregulare, Gyrochorte comosa, and Parahaentzschelinia surlyki. Contrary to predictions, which assume a dominance of suspension-feeders in such high-energy environments, the trace fossil assemblage represents a variety of ethological groups ranging from suspension-feeders to deposit-feeders, detritus-feeders, scavengers, and a possible trap constructor (Ctenopholeus), whereby deposit-feeders predominate. This anomaly is explained by a high amount of organic detritus in the sediment, indicated by abundant plant material, and a position of the beach in the vicinity of a river mouth.  相似文献

Human tracks discovered in 1874 at a site named El Cauce or Acahualinca near the shores of Lake Managua, Nicaragua, are the most famous and abundant human tracks in the Americas. They represent a landmark ichnological discovery during the late 19th century that generated much debate regarding their age and origins. Reported dates for the tracks range from 2,120 to 6,500 B.P. The site, which is now situated within the limits of Nicaragua's capital city of Managua, forms the basis of the Acahualinca Tracks Museum (Huellas de Acahualinca) and has been in place since 1953. However, it is still little known and has not been systematically studied, despite being an important window into Meso-American prehistory. Two exposures of a surface of volcanic ash reveal hundreds of human tracks comprising a minimum of 12 clearly defined trackways, and a trampled zone or path representing at least three more individuals, all heading in the same northwesterly direction. Tracks of deer, opossum and at least one bird are also present. Bison tracks collected from another nearby site (El Recreo) that is no longer accessible are on display at the museum. The Acahualinca tracks are noteworthy for the exceptional quality of preservation. We herein present the first maps of the two exposures, which combine to tell a story of human and animal activity along the shores of ancient Lake Managua several thousand years ago.  相似文献

Recent fieldwork in the Ombilin Basin of west-central Sumatra resulted in the discovery of two distinct types of avian footprints, both referable to the ichnogenus Aquatilavipes. The footprints were discovered in the Oligocene Sawahlunto Formation in a creek side outcrop near the Kandi Ombilin Mine. Aquatilavipes wallacei is a small species of Aquatilavipes (~ 19 mm wide; 27 mm long) with elongate third digits, wide total divarication angles (120–150°) and inwardly curved peripheral digits. Aquatilavipes ichnospecies A are also small traces (average 21 mm wide; 31 mm long) with elongate third digits and straight to slightly outwardly curved peripheral digits. These traces are similar in morphology to those of small modern shorebirds such as rails (Rallidae), sandpipers (Scolapacidae) or plovers (Charadriinae).

The Sawahlunto traces occur in very fine-grained to fine-grained sandstone characterized by low-relief current ripples, many of which exhibit mud-draping. A low diversity invertebrate trace fossil assemblage consisting of Arenicolites, Diplocraterion, Planolites, Monocraterion, Skolithos and Coenobichnus co-occurs with the bird footprints. This succession is interpreted as intertidal sand flats. Probe and peck marks preserved on the same bedding planes as the bird footprints support the interpretation that these birds occupied the Kandi intertidal flats for foraging purposes.  相似文献

John Joly was an Irish engineer and geologist who in the 1880s attempted to explain the formation of Cambrian markings known as Oldhamia to the freezing of sediment and the development of surface frost. He also noted differences in the preservation of two forms of Oldhamia when found together in the same bed; these were either as a positive or negative. Oldhamia also inspired Joly to write a sonnet in which he considered geochronology, denudation and the history of life. Here we describe a number of mostly isolated bird and non-avian dinosaur footprints from the Huangyangquan track site in the Lower Cretaceous Lower Layer of the Tugulu Group near Huangyangquan Reservoir in the Wuerhe District, Karamay, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Bird footprints at the site pertain to Koreanaornis dodsoni n. ichnosp., Goseongornipes isp., Aquatilavipes isp., and Moguiornipes robusta n. ichnogen. n. ichnosp. Moguiornipes tracks may be the products of a bird with lobed feet. These shorebird-morph tracks are the first solid evidence of birds in the Tugulu Group, and greatly enrich the known faunal diversity of the Lower Layer of the Tugulu Group. The Huangyangquan avian ichnofauna is comparable to those of the Jindong Formation, Korea and the Dakota Formation, USA. Non-avian dinosaur footprints at the site pertain to cf. Jialingpus isp., Asianopodus isp., and Kayentapus isp. This is the first report of Jialingpus from Lower Cretaceous strata. The discoveries of Asianopodus isp. and Kayentapus isp. increase the known ranges of these two ichnogenera.  相似文献

A newly discovered dinosaur tracksite in the Upper Cretaceous Dakota Group of southeastern Colorado preserves tracks attributable to ornithopod, theropod, and possibly ankylosaurid dinosaurs. Minimally 79 tracks occur at the site, and are comprised predominantly of ornithopod prints preserved as natural sandstone casts. Nine ornithopod tracks are preserved in situ, and all but one of these trends in a northeasterly direction. The high density of ornithopod tracks coupled with the similar trend of those in situ suggest gregarious behavior. Size distribution of the ornithopod tracks indicates that some juveniles are present, with sub-adults most abundant and lesser numbers of mature adults. Considerable size variation exists within the nine in situ tracks with similar trends. Thus, the site could record the passage of a mixed herd composed of several age classes. This may be the only reported Dakota tracksite where ornithopod, theropod, and ankylosaurid prints occur together.  相似文献

Summary Diverse and abundant trace fossils of the deep-waterNereites ichnofacies have been found in well-dated Early Permian deep-water turbidites (Lercara Formation) of western Sicily (Italy). Conodonts indicate a latest Artinskian to Cathedralian (late Early Permian) age. Microfossils (pelagic conodonts, albaillellid Radiolaria, paleopsychrospheric ostracods, foraminiferal associations dominated byBathysiphon), trace fossils (deep-bathyal to abyssalNereites ichnofacies) and sedimentologic data collectively indicate a deep-water environment for the Early Permian turbidites of the Lercara Formation. The dominance ofAgrichnium and of thePaleodictyon subichnogeneraSquamodictyon andMegadictyon suggests that this icnofauna is closely related in ichnotaxonomic composition to other late Paleozoic deep-water ichnofaunas. The occurrence ofAcanthorhaphe. Dendrotichnium andHelicoraphe, to date only reported from Cretaceous or Tertiary flysch deposits, suggests that the entire ichnofauna corresponds well to previously documented Silurian-Tertiary flysch ichnofaunas. Eight new ichnospecies and a new ichnosubgenus,Megadictyon, are described.  相似文献

Ichnology of New England: A report on the sandstone of the Connecticut Valley, especially its footmarks, Made to the government of the commonwealth of Massachusetts, 220Boston, MA: William White.  [Google Scholar] and named Cochlea archimedea presents interesting ichnotaxonomic and paleoecologic issues. The ichnogenus Cochlea is considered to be a preoccupied taxon and therefore invalid. The specimen in question is given its appropriate name, Undichna isp., based on its apparent morphology and is reinterpreted as a trail made by a fish. Two working hypotheses for the construction of the trail are: (A) as a single epichnial groove with side levees made by one fin in contact with the substrate and (B) as a hypichnial trail with two grooves made by two fins in contact with the substrate. A more specific approach cannot be taken without knowledge of the true toponomy of the trace fossil, as none is indicated on the original specimen. Regardless, the identification of the first trails made by fish in the Early Jurassic of the Newark Supergroup of Massachusetts indicates the need for more nondinosaurian trace fossil research in the Mesozoic rift basins of eastern North America. The most likely tracemaker, depending on the correct constructional hypothesis, is either a semionotid with a deeply set anal fin (hypothesis B) or Redfieldius (hypothesis A). Considering the abundance of fish body fossils preserved in rocks of this age in eastern North America, it is likely that once recognized, more Undichna will be discovered in future field explorations.  相似文献

Present study investigates relationships between total and bioaccessibility of trace elements (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, NI, Pb, V, and Zn) concentrations in sediment and their bioaccumulation in species in Shadegan wetland in southwest of Iran. Bioavailability factor (BAF) and translocation factor (TF) were calculated in plants and trophic transfer factor (TTF) was determined in bird species. For this purpose, sampling of sediments, aquatic plants including Phragmites australis, Typha australis, Scripus maritimus and two bird species encircling Porphyrio porphyrio and globally threatened Marmaronetta angustirostris were carried out during winter 2009. Result of chemical analysis show that bioaccessibility concentrations of Mn (8.31 mg/kg), V (1.33 mg/kg), and Pb (1.03 mg/kg) are higher than other metals. The uptake trend of trace elements in plant decreases as root > stem > leaf. Accumulation levels of trace elements in different tissues of P. porphyrio and M. angustirostris are almost identical and considerable. Accumulation and toxicity of Cd in birds is more than plants. In addition, BAF of V, Pb, and Cr indicates high accumulation by plants and great pollution rate in the area of study. In S. maritimus TF for Mn, Cu, Pb, and V are high whereas in T. australis, Cu and Pb posses the highest TF. Also Cr, Co, Mn, Ni, and Zn have higher TF from stem to leaf than root to stem in P. australis. Finally, TTFs were compared in various bird species.  相似文献

In 1997, coal extraction at the John Henry Mine in western King County, Washington, USA, exposed bedding planes in Eocene sandstone that contained numerous bird and mammal tracks. By the time scientists arrived at the site several months later, the track-bearing surfaces had mostly been obliterated by landslides. Several track specimens were collected but not curated, described, or studied. In 2011, the specimens were found in a storage room at the University of Washington Burke Museum of History and Culture, triggering an investigation that yielded many photographs of the fossil site taken at the time of the 1997 discovery. Perissodactyl mammal tracks are named herein as Oplidcatylapes eocenica ichnogenus and ichnospecies nov. Photographs also show a trackway containing eight footprints that have prominent claw impressions. These tracks are inferred to have been made by a creodont, but because of the absence of specimens or track casts to serve as holotypes, ichnotaxonomic names have not been assigned.  相似文献
