Litter accumulation in woodlands contaminated by Pb,Zn, Cd and Cu   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Summary Close to a primary lead-zinc-cadmium smelter the standing crop of litter in woodlands was found to be elevated relative to more distant sites. The total litter accumulation is similar to that from contaminated sites reported by other authors but in this case the concentrations of heavy metals are considerably lower than those reported for other sites. Evidence is provided to support the hypothesis that within the woodlands studied, litter accumulation is not closely pH dependent, but is clearly related to both cadmium and zinc concentrations in litter. Litter accumulation occurs in certain particle size ranges and fractionation shows that the weight of accumulated litter in these size ranges is highly correlated to cadmium concentrations. These results are discussed in relation to the reported possible long term effects of metal contamination on decomposition processes and the possibility of adaptation to these adverse effects.  相似文献

The density of high affinity binding sites for [3H]4'-chlorodiazepam [( 3H]Ro 5-4864) in guinea pig cerebral cortex is significantly higher (3.8-fold) than the density reported in the rat, and is nearly equal to the density of binding sites for other [3H]benzodiazepines (e.g., diazepam, flunitrazepam). The density of these [3H]Ro 5-4864 binding sites was generally higher in guinea pig brain than in rat brain, with the exception of olfactory bulb. Both the subcellular distribution and pharmacologic profile of these sites in guinea pig brain appears qualitatively similar to observations previously reported in the rat. The high density of binding sites for [3H]Ro 5-4864, coupled with the potency of this compound as a convulsant in the guinea pig, suggest this species will be a valuable model for elucidating putative pharmacologic and physiologic functions of these sites in brain.  相似文献

Individuals and families have been documented in which there are a number of fragile sites on chromosomes. These include sites at 2q11, 10q23, 11q13, 16p124, 16q22, 20p11, and Xq27 or 28. Fragile sites reported in the literature are compiled. The cytogenetics of the sites is discussed. The phenotypic effects of the sites are considered, and it is speculated that homozygosity of the autosomal sites might be deleterious as is hemizygosity of the site on Xq. These sites are used in the previous report which documents the effect of tissue medium components on their expression.  相似文献

Stable social aggregations are rarely recorded in lizards, but have now been reported from several species in the Australian scincid genus Egernia. Most of those examples come from species using rock crevice refuges that are relatively easy to observe. But for many other Egernia species that occupy different habitats and are more secretive, it is hard to gather the observational data needed to deduce their social structure. Therefore, we used genotypes at six polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci of 229 individuals of Egernia frerei, trapped in 22 sampling sites over 3500 ha of eucalypt forest on Fraser Island, Australia. Each sampling site contained 15 trap locations in a 100 x 50 m grid. We estimated relatedness among pairs of individuals and found that relatedness was higher within than between sites. Relatedness of females within sites was higher than relatedness of males, and was higher than relatedness between males and females. Within sites we found that juvenile lizards were highly related to other juveniles and to adults trapped at the same location, or at adjacent locations, but relatedness decreased with increasing trap separation. We interpreted the results as suggesting high natal philopatry among juvenile lizards and adult females. This result is consistent with stable family group structure previously reported in rock dwelling Egernia species, and suggests that social behaviour in this genus is not habitat driven.  相似文献

The binding, internalization, and degradation of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in human omental microvascular endothelial cells (HOME cells) were investigated. Binding studies of bFGF in human endothelial cells have not yet been reported. Basic FGF bound to HOME cells (KD of 42.0 +/- 3.8 pM and 70,526 +/- 6121 binding sites/cell for the high-affinity sites, KD of 0.933 +/- 0.27 nM and 630,252 +/- 172,459 sites/cell for low-affinity binding sites). The number of low-affinity binding sites was found to be variable. Washing the cells with 2 M phosphate-buffered saline removed completely 125I-bFGF bound to low-affinity binding sites but decreased also the high-affinity binding. The majority of the surface-bound 125I-bFGF was removed by washing the cells with acetic acid buffer at pH 3. At 37 degrees C, 30% of the cell-associated 125I-bFGF became resistant to the acidic wash after 90 min, suggesting that this fraction of bound 125I-bFGF was internalized. At this temperature, degradation of the internalized ligand was followed after 1 h by the appearance of three major bands of 15,000, 10,000, and 8,000 Da and was inhibited by chloroquine. These results demonstrated two classes of binding sites for bFGF in HOME cells; the number of high-affinity binding sites being larger than the number reported for bovine capillary endothelial cells. The intracellular processing of bFGF in HOME cells seems to be different from that of heparin binding growth factor-1 in murine lung capillary endothelial cells and of eye-derived growth factor-1 in Chinese hamster fibroblasts.  相似文献

The alpine zones of Ladakh are floristically and geobotanically very interesting. In the past these were poorly known botanically because of the ruggedness and inaccessibility of the area. The varied climatic conditions and habitat types have a main role to play in establishing the vegetation of these zones. A total of 122 taxa were identified from collections made during the summer months (July, August and September) of the year 1976. These areas fall in an altitudinal range of 4000 to 5000 m. Fifteen taxa are reported as new records for this region. Six different habitat types were recognised on the basis of local distribution of these taxa, viz. 1. Rocky and gravelly sites; 2. Alkaline swamps; 3. Silty and clay sites; 4. Stream sites; 5. Meadow and shrub fields and 6. Cultivated field sites. A comprehensive inventory of the flowering plants of this region is given in the paper.  相似文献

Preparation, characterization and structural properties of a novel bis-phosphaalkenyl based PNP-pincer are reported. In this pincer the π-system is delocalized over all three donor sites, which was demonstrated with DFT calculations, UV-Vis measurements and structural findings. As a consequence of this extended delocalization the π-system reveals near coplanarity which is evident from the first crystal structure for an uncomplexed bisphosphaalkenyl PNP-pincer.  相似文献

Abstract. Despite international recognition that alvar habitats are important reservoirs of biodiversity, they remain little studied in North America. In this paper, the results are reported on an investigation of alvars in the central portion of their known distribution on this continent. 210 plots were distributed among seven sites and were quantitatively sampled for vascular plants, lichens, bryophytes and a suite of environmental variables. Detrended and Canonical Correspondence Analyses and other methods were used to investigate differences among alvars, within alvars and between alvars and adjacent forested habitats. The plant communities and environmental conditions were highly similar among sites in the study region, yet very different from surrounding habitats. There were abrupt changes in vegetation and environmental conditions from alvar to forest, without the presence of transition zones in the vegetation or environmental gradients as the forest was approached. The environmental factors associated with the change from alvar to forest and with variation within alvar habitat were examined. Some alvars in the study were found to contain stunted, slow-growing trees reaching ages of 524 yr. These same sites appear to have remained unburned for several centuries, while other sites likely burned 90 yr ago. The plant communities were very similar between the alvars that lacked a major, biomass-removing disturbance in centuries and alvars that had experienced catastrophic fire relatively recently. Maintenance of the plant communities and open nature of alvars appears site-specific rather than habitat specific.  相似文献

We recently reported statistical analysis of structural data on glycosidic linkages. Here we extend this analysis to the glycan-protein linkage, and the peptide primary, secondary, and tertiary structures around N-glycosylation sites. We surveyed 506 glycoproteins in the Protein Data Bank crystallographic database, giving 2592 glycosylation sequons (1683 occupied) and generated a database of 626 nonredundant sequons with 386 occupied. Deviations in the expected amino acid composition were seen around occupied asparagines, particularly an increased occurrence of aromatic residues before the asparagine and threonine at position +2. Glycosylation alters the asparagine side chain torsion angle distribution and reduces its flexibility. There is an elevated probability of finding glycosylation sites in which secondary structure changes. An 11-class taxonomy was developed to describe protein surface geometry around glycosylation sites. Thirty-three percent of the occupied sites are on exposed convex surfaces, 10% in deep recesses and 20% on the edge of grooves with the glycan filling the cleft. A surprisingly large number of glycosylated asparagine residues have a low accessibility. The incidence of aromatic amino acids brought into close contact with the glycan by the folding process is higher than their normal levels on the surface or in the protein core. These data have significant implications for control of sequon occupancy and evolutionary selection of glycosylation sites and are discussed in relation to mechanisms of protein fold stabilization and regional quality control of protein folding. Hydrophobic protein-glycan interactions and the low accessibility of glycosylation sites in folded proteins are common features and may be critical in mediating these functions.  相似文献

Abstract

A survey of mosses undertaken on the plateau region of Zambia resulted in the collection of eighty-eight species representing twenty-eight families. A total of seventy-three species of mosses have been reported from Zambia up to 1983, but this report provides an additional sixty-one species The preliminary pattern of distribution reveals that out of the eighty-eight species collected, sixty-two occur in the woodlands and riparian forests while twenty-six are restricted to the humid, waterfall sites.  相似文献

Absorption, circular dichroism (CD), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and emission spectra of rat liver and rat kidney cadmium-, zinc- and copper-containing metallothioneins (MT) are reported. The absorption, CD and MCD data of native rat kidney Cd,Cu-MT protein closely resemble data recorded for the rat liver Cd,Zn-MT. This suggests that the major features in all three spectra of the native Cd,Cu-MT are dominated by cadmium-related bands. The CD spectrum of the Cd,Cu-MT recorded at pH 2.7 has the same band envelope that is observed for a Cd,Cu-MT formed in vitro by titration of Cd,Zn-MT with Cu(I), suggesting that the copper occupies the zinc sites in Cd,Cu-MT formed both in vivo and, at low molar ratios, in vitro. Remetallalion of the metallothionein from low pH in the presence of both copper and cadmium results in considerably less cadmium bound to the protein than was present in the native sample. It is suggested that this is due to the effect of the distribution of the copper amongst all available binding sites, thus inhibiting cluster formation by the cadmium. Emission spectra are reported for the first time for a cadmium- and copper-containing metallothionein. An emission band at 610 nm is shown to be a sensitive indicator of Cu(I) binding to metallothionein. Both the native Cd,Cu-MT and a Cd,Cu-MT formed in vitro exhibit an excitation spectrum with a band in the copper-thiolate charge-transfer region.  相似文献

Resources for evaluating the ecological outcomes of ecosystem restoration projects are often limited, especially within government‐funded programs. In order to rapidly assess the ecological outcomes of wetland restoration, an improved approach has been developed, which was applied in the assessment of the ecological outcomes at nine restoration sites of South Africa's Working for Wetlands program. The sites encompass a diversity of restoration problems and land use contexts. The approach begins by distinguishing hydrogeomorphic (HGM) units, for which ecological condition is assessed and reported for hydrology, geomorphology, and vegetation pre‐ and post‐restoration. These three components are closely linked but, as demonstrated at some of the sites, may respond differentially to restoration interventions. For most HGM units, overall ecological condition was improved by between 10 and 30%, with the greatest contribution of restoration generally being to the hydrology component. Having determined the integrity and costs of the interventions, cost‐effectiveness is then reported in South African Rands per hectare equivalent restored, which was found to vary by more than an order of magnitude across the HGM units assessed. Cost‐effectiveness must be interpreted in the light of the long‐term integrity of the interventions, the site's landscape context, and the contribution of restoration to ecosystem services provision. Some sites may be considerably less cost‐effective than others, but the cost may nonetheless be justified if the sites make key contributions to ecosystem services provision. The study was conducted in the context of a formative evaluation and the findings are envisaged to improve wetland restoration practice.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that background selection, the effects of the elimination of recurring deleterious mutations by natural selection on variability at linked sites, may be a major factor shaping genome-wide patterns of genetic diversity. To accurately quantify the importance of background selection, it is vital to have computationally efficient models that include essential biological features. To this end, a structured coalescent procedure is used to construct a model of background selection that takes into account the effects of recombination, recent changes in population size and variation in selection coefficients against deleterious mutations across sites. Furthermore, this model allows a flexible organization of selected and neutral sites in the region concerned, and has the ability to generate sequence variability at both selected and neutral sites, allowing the correlation between these two types of sites to be studied. The accuracy of the model is verified by checking against the results of forward simulations. These simulations also reveal several patterns of diversity that are in qualitative agreement with observations reported in recent studies of DNA sequence polymorphisms. These results suggest that the model should be useful for data analysis.  相似文献

Anopheles lindesayi japonicus Yamada is an uncommonly collected mosquito in Korea, and its presence is based upon limited collection data and anecdotal reports in Korean mosquito literature: 45 specimens collected from 15 identified sites. This study reports the collection of 538 specimens from 16 sites as part of the authors' 2004-2007 anopheline surveillance. Larvae were collected from stream margins, stream pools, rock pools, seepage springs, artificial containers, swamps, and ditches and were found in association with seven other culicid species. Inclusion of the authors' data with previous published and unpublished records makes this a comprehensive report on this species in Korea. New province records are reported for this species at Hwacheon and Wonju in Gangwon Province, Mt. Palgong in Daegu Metropolitan, and Chungju and Mt. Worak in Chungcheongbuk Province in the Republic of Korea.  相似文献

The specific binding of [3H]kainic acid was investigated in membrane preparations from human parietal cortex obtained postmortem. Saturation studies revealed that binding occurred to a single population of sites with a KD of 15 nM and a Bmax of 110 fmol/mg of protein. The kinetically determined dissociation constant for these sites agreed well with that obtained from saturation analyses. Pharmacological characterisation of these sites gave a profile consistent with those reported for kainate receptor sites in animal brain. The integrity of kainate receptors was studied in several brain regions from six patients who had died of Alzheimer's disease and from six closely matched control subjects. No change in either the affinity or the number of kainate receptors was seen in any of the regions studied, despite the loss of neocortical and hippocampal glutamatergic terminals in the Alzheimer's diseased brains, as previously reported.  相似文献

Ceruloplasmin is a multi-copper oxidase, which contains most of the copper present in the plasma. It is an acute-phase reactant that exhibits a two- to three-fold increase over the normal concentration of 300?μg/ml in adult plasma. However, the precise physiological role(s) of ceruloplasmin has been the subject of intensive debate and it is likely that the enzyme has a multi-functional role, including iron oxidase activity and the oxidation of biogenic amines. The three-dimensional X-ray structure of the human enzyme was elucidated in 1996 and showed that the molecule was composed of six cupredoxin-type domains arranged in a triangular array. There are six integral copper atoms per molecule (mononuclear sites in domains 2, 4 and 6 and a trinuclear site between domains 1 and 6) and two labile sites with roughly 50% occupancy. Further structural studies on the binding of metal cations by the enzyme indicated a putative mechanism for ferroxidase activity. In this paper we report medium-resolution X-ray studies (3.0–3.5?Å) which locate the binding sites for an inhibitor (azide) and various substrates [aromatic diamines, biogenic amines and (+)-lysergic acid diethylamide, LSD]. The binding site of the azide moiety is topologically equivalent to one of the sites reported for ascorbate oxidase. However, there are two distinct binding sites for amine substrates: aromatic diamines bind on the bottom of domain 4 remote from the mononuclear copper site, whereas the biogenic amine series typified by serotonin, epinephrine and dopa bind in close vicinity to that utilised by cations in domain 6 and close to the mononuclear copper. These binding sites are discussed in terms of possible oxidative mechanisms. The binding site for LSD is also reported.  相似文献

Rosylip sculpin Ascelichthys rhodorus spawned in the intertidal during the winter in the north‐eastern Pacific. Large numbers of males typically congregated at spawning sites, where females deposited clutches. The mating system of this species was external fertilization and group spawning at specific oviposition sites under boulders in the intertidal, and no alternative male mating strategies. Males were abundant at sites while oviposition was occurring, and most abandoned the sites as spawning tapered off seasonally despite the presence of developing clutches. Experimental removal of males from sites suggested that males provided some short‐term benefits to clutches, with catastrophic loss of clutches significantly lower when males were present. The large number of males at an oviposition site and histological evidence indicating high sperm production and storage of sperm prior to release suggest a high level of sperm competition in this species. This spawning pattern appears to differ in substantial ways from any other reported fish mating system.  相似文献

The distribution of tardigrades in the states of the southern United States is poorly known. There are no published records from the state of Louisiana, while in Arkansas only one species has been reported. Samples of mosses and lichens from trees and rocks were collected from three sites in central and southern Louisiana and six sites in western Arkansas. Leaf litter samples were collected from one site in Louisiana. Nine species of tardigrade were found in Louisiana and 22 in Arkansas.
