In our present studies, the recovery of photosynthetic activity after rehydration was demonstrated. We measured chlorophyll fluorescence, CO2 gas exchange and the pigment composition in the previously long-term air-dried cryptogamic inselberg crusts collected from two tropical areas. The cryptobiotic crusts were collected from different localities on similar ecological and climatic conditions from extreme habitats of inselbergs (outcrops). These inselbergs are characterized by a dry microclimate and are covered by scarce soil. We found that the ecophysiological responses of both cryptogamic inselberg crusts showed an extremely high degree of desiccation-tolerance due to the fast and full recovery during rehydration. The photosynthetic activity of the cryptobiotic crusts were restored and regained within 15 and 40 min, respectively, after rehydration. Photosynthetic activity of the crusts was retained at all applied light intensities when enough water was available, however the degree of the recovery was different between the crusts. Photosynthetic pigment contents were strongly and positively correlated with water content. Our results indicated that tropical desiccation-tolerant cryptogamic crusts found on inselberg rock surfaces have CO2 fixation ability in the range of cyanobacteria and lichens, suggesting that at a global scale they can assimilate CO2 in a significant amount.  相似文献

Summary The present paper presents results of stratigraphical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological investigations of an olistolith from the Büd?skút area in the Bükk Mts (NW Hungary). The olistolith consists of Norian sub- and peritidal platform carbonates (Büd?skút lime-stone). During early diagenesis dissolution cavities originated which where filled by ostracodal mudstones. Other cavities first were wallpapered by evinospongial crusts and later filled either by ostracodal mudstones or by brick-red haematitic material (weathered bauxite). The evinospongial crusts show stromatolite-like structures and their forming therefore is supposed to be organically (microbially) induced. During the Early up to the Late Jurassic the host rock was dissected by neptunian dykes. The internal sediment's faunal content reveals that the dykes formed during the (?) Hettangian/Sinemurian and the Toarcian— Oxfordian age. A comparison of the Büd?skút limestone neptunian dyke internal sediments with the Bükk parautochthonous and the Szarvasko-Mónosbél nappe complex sedimentary columns shows no similarities. Therefore the Büd?skút olistolith is interpreted as an exotic body within the Bükk Mts.  相似文献

The dominance of Corallina thalli in an intertidal algal assemblage was examined by a series of algal removal experiments to test the hypothesis that other tam are competitively excluded from rock substrate. An alternate explanation, that environmental factors seasonally filter out taxa leaving Corallina as the only alga adapted for year to year survival, was considered. Development of vegetation on patches of naturally exposed bare rock was monitored and compared with manipulated surfaces. Thalli of several species were selectively removed from exposed surfaces and intact turf;. changes in tam occupying primary substrate were recorded over more than three years. No significant differences in mean percent cover for Corallina, Lithothrix, bare rock, or algal crusts were found among treatments. Except for initial growth of colonizing species, abundances of other species dad not increase in the absence of Corallina. Large amounts of rock remained bare or intermittently covered by transient populations of short-lived algae. Data from single quad-rats, where individual clumps of Lithothrix were followed from month to month, indicated that the continued presence of this co-occurring and often abundant species depended on turnover of short-lived thalli rather than persistence of the same clumps. No interactions were found among the several categories of species that appeared after rock substrate was cleared. Most species were the same ones that grew, epiphytically in intact turf at the same time. In control quadrats Corallina maintained 59-95% cover while slowly increasing on surfaces earlier exposed. I predict that Corallina species will regain their dominance in the absence of competitors for primary substrate if the slowly spreading basal crusts remain undisturbed. Morphological and life history characteristics are identified that adapt Corallina to its dominant role in this habitat.  相似文献

Christmas (Kiritimati) Island is an unusually large coral atoll, of which a large proportion of the surface is presently subaerial. Extensive outcrops of in situ branching Acropora corals, together with Porites microatolls, Tridacna, and other shallow marine biota, indicate that the present low-lying area of interconnecting lakes in the island interior formed as a reticulate lagoon. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these lagoonal reefs flourished between 4500 and 1500 radiocarbon years BP, and surveying confirms that sea level was 0.5–1.0 m above present at that time, with subaerial exposure resulting from Late Holocene emergence. Boreholes undertaken for a water resources survey of the island penetrated near-surface Pleistocene limestones on the northern, southern, and eastern sides of the island. These are highly weathered and fractured, and although aragonitic clasts are preserved, U-series dating indicates a Middle Pleistocene or older age. At one location flanking the Bay of Wrecks, an outcrop of limestone, with an erosional notch, 1–2 m above present sea level, yielded a U-series age of 130 ka, and is interpreted as Last Interglacial in age. In contrast to previous interpretations which have suggested that Christmas Island comprised an atoll superstructure that is entirely Holocene, or the layer-cake interpretation appropriate for many mid-ocean atolls, Christmas Island appears to have had a form similar to its present in the Middle Pleistocene or earlier. It has undergone karstification during lowstands. Interglacials, particularly the Last Interglacial and the Holocene, appear to have resulted in only a minor veneer of coral over older limestone surfaces. Christmas Island is considered characteristic of an atoll that has not experienced significant subsidence through the Late Quaternary. Accepted: 15 May 1998  相似文献

Rock rinds have been used for half a century to date glacial deposits and recently inroads have been developed to use nuclides to provide absolute ages of weathering rinds in pebble clasts. Although maximum and minimum rind thicknesses have helped to elucidate time since deposition and allowed stratigraphic division of deposits at glacial rank, little has been done to investigate the wealth of mineral degradation, growth of alteration products and biomineralization that occur in these weathered crusts. In some cases the mass of microbe-mineral intergrowth is nearly present on a 50%/50% basis, with the biotic mass intergrown with mineral matter to such an extent that it probably controls pH and redox phenomena that act as accelerators in the weathering process. Assuming weathering time spans of 2 × 106 years or more for a complete cycle, eventual clast decomposition is the end product. Here we present evidence of microbe-clast intergrowth from selected sites of Pleistocene age (~70 ka to 2.0 Ma) in the lower Afroalpine of Mt. Kenya and hypothesize about its role in rock decomposition and fossilization of biotic end-members.  相似文献

In arctic glacier moraines, bioweathering primed by microbial iron oxidizers creates fertility gradients that accelerate soil development and plant establishment. With the aim of investigating the change of bacterial diversity in a pyrite-weathered gradient, we analyzed the composition of the bacterial communities involved in the process by sequencing 16S rRNA gene libraries from different biological soil crusts (BSC). Bacterial communities in three BSC of different morphology, located within 1 m distance downstream a pyritic conglomerate rock, were significantly diverse. The glacier moraine surrounding the weathered site showed wide phylogenetic diversity and high evenness with 15 represented bacterial classes, dominated by Alphaproteobacteria and pioneer Cyanobacteria colonizers. The bioweathered area showed the lowest diversity indexes and only nine bacterial families, largely dominated by Acidobacteriaceae and Acetobacteraceae typical of acidic environments, in accordance with the low pH of the BSC. In the weathered BSC, iron-oxidizing bacteria were cultivated, with counts decreasing along with the increase of distance from the rock, and nutrient release from the rock was revealed by environmental scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analyses. The vegetated area showed the presence of Actinomycetales, Verrucomicrobiales, Gemmatimonadales, Burkholderiales, and Rhizobiales, denoting a bacterial community typical of developed soils and indicating that the lithoid substrate of the bare moraine was here subjected to an accelerated colonization, driven by iron-oxidizing activity.  相似文献

Summary Previous studies indicated that at Taboguilla Island (Gulf of Panama), persistence of many intertidal organisms depended on holes and crevices in the rock as refuges from both vertebrate (fishes) and invertebrate (crabs, gastropods, chitons) consumers. Here, we evaluate the influences of substratum heterogeneity and consumers on patterns of diversity of sessile organisms in this habitat. Local substratum topography is highly variable, ranging from smooth to irregular surfaces. Algal crusts typically dominate all low zone rock surfaces, and most other sessile spegies (invertebrates and foliose algae) occur in holes and crevices. Number (S) and diversity (H) of sessile species is lower on homogeneous surfaces than on heterogeneous surfaces. Rate of increase in S with area sampled is positively correlated with substratum heterogeneity; number of species sampled per transect at a homogeneous site would be about 10 vs 30 to 60 on a heterogeneous site. Large fishes and crabs forage intensively over both substratum types, but cannot enter holes and crevices to eat prey. Gastropods, chitons, limpets, and small crabs feed on both substrata but vary in abundance from hole to hole. Prey mortality is thus intense and constant on open surfaces, but variable in space and time in holes and crevices. When consumers are excluded from the general rock surface, algal crusts are settled upon and overgrown by foliose algae, hydrozoans, and sessile invertebrates, particularly bivalves. Both S and H first increase, as sessile species invade and become more abundant, and then decrease as the rock oyster Chama echinata begins to outcompete other species and dominate primary space. Hence, consumers normally keep local diversity low by removing most sessile prey from open surfaces. In these experiments, a consumer pressure gradient was established by removing 0, 1, 2, 3, and all of 4 distinct groups of consumers. As predicted by the intermediate disturbance hypothesis, lowest diversity occurred at lowest (total exclusion) and highest consumer pressure (normal condition). Highest diversity occurred at intermediate consumer pressure. Unexplained variation in this relationship is probably due to quantitative and qualitative differences in consumer regime, variation among plots in substratum heterogeneity, and insufficient time for competitive dominance by Chama to be fully expressed. On a small (0.25 m2) spatial scale, consumers maintain low diversity by keeping prey scarce and causing local extinctions. On larger spatial scales, they may maintain and even produce high diversity through their interaction with substratum heterogeneity and possibly low dispersal rates of sessile species.  相似文献

The results of a Metropolis Monte Carlo simulation of a three dimensional lattice model of an amphiphile and solvent mixture are presented. In the model each amphiphile molecule is represented as a connected chain of lattice sites with one site representing the head and the remaining chain sites representing the tail of the molecule. The remaining sites on the lattice represent solvent molecules. The amphiphiles interact through a nearest neighbour potential which includes head-solvent and tail-solvent interactions. No prior assumption is made about the structures which may be observed.

The cluster size distribution and cluster structure is studied as a function of temperature and head-solvent interaction. If the tail-solvent interaction is solvophobic and the head-solvent interaction is solvophilic, a micellar region is observed in the phase diagram. For sufficiently solvophilic head-solvent interactions the low temperature phase exhibits self assembly into castellated bilayer structures.  相似文献

Abstract

Metal-oxidizing bacteria may play a key role in the submarine weathering of volcanic rocks and the formation of ferromanganese crusts. Putative fossil microbes encrusted in Mn oxide phases are commonly observed on volcanic glasses recovered from the deep ocean; however, no known Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria have been directly identified or cultured from natural weathered basalts. To isolate epilithic Mn(II) oxidizing bacteria, we collected young, oxidized pillow basalts from the cold, outer portions of Loihi Seamount, and from nearby exposures of pillow basalts at South Point and Kealakekua Bay, HI. SEM imaging, EDS spectra and X-ray absorption spectroscopy data show that microbial biofilms and associated Mn oxides were abundant on the basalt surfaces. Using a series of seawater-based media that range from highly oligotrophic to organic-rich, we have obtained 26 mesophilic, heterotrophic Mn(II)-oxidizing isolates dominated by α- and γ-Proteobacteria, such as Sulfitobacter, Methylarcula and Pseudoalteromonas spp. Additional isolates include Microbulbifer, Alteromonas, Marinobacter, and Halomonas spp. None of the isolates, nor their closest relatives, were previously recognized as Mn(II) oxidizing bacteria. The physiological function of Mn(II) oxidation is clearly spread amongst many phylogenetically diverse organisms colonizing basalt surfaces. Our findings support a biological catalysis of Mn(II) oxidation during basalt-weathering, and suggest heterotrophic Mn(II) oxidizing bacteria may be ubiquitously associated with submarine glasses within epilithic and endolithic biofilms.  相似文献

Bacteria belonging to the genera Bacillus, Micrococcus and Thiobacillus, yeast and microalgae of the Apatococcus genus colonize the building of two monuments at Alcalá de Henares (Spain). In highly altered zones, polymicrobial communities were observed, mainly beneath the surface of the crusts, which demonstrated that rock surfaces are good substrates and offer possibilities for interaction among several types of populations. Microbial activity in surface layers of the stone was revealed by means of the TTC (triphenyltetrazolium chloride) test. With SEM (scanning electron microscopy), the weathering of the substrate was observed, as well as the presence of pollution particles and microbial structures.  相似文献

Abstract: Microbial crusts are present on surfaces of soils throughout the world. A key feature of these crusts in arid zones is the abundance of filamentous sheath-forming and polysaccharide-excreting cyanobacteria. Several isolates of cyanobacteria were prepared from crust samples (Nizzana sand dunes, north-western Negev Desert, Israel). Optimal growth conditions for two such isolates of Microcoleus sp. were defined, and the role of the excreted polysaccharides in affecting the hydrological properties of crust-covered sand dunes was studied. Experiments with the native crust microbial population demonstrated the possibility of net primary productivity at both high relative air humidities and low moisture content.  相似文献

Holocene growth of a mid-Pacific atoll: Tarawa,Kiribati   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Cores from ten holes, drilled to a maximum depth of 30 m, on Tarawa atoll in the central Pacific have been utilised in a study of the Holocene development of the atoll. Four dominant lithologies, in descending order, are cay rock, unconsolidated sediment, corals and leached limestone. Petrographic and radiometric age analyses indicate that the Holocene reef has developed on a previous (last interglacial) reef; the latter shows the effects of both vadose and phreatic freshwater diagenesis. Hydrological investigations beneath the present islands indicate the presence of freshwater lenses up to 29 m thick; the modern lenses are unrelated to freshwater diagenetic imprints preserved within the limestones. Vertical accretion rates of 5–8 m/1000 years for the Holocene reef section on Tarawa are significantly higher than rates measured for other Pacific atolls. The dated coral sequences suggest a more rapid rate of sea level rise during the early Holocene, and a relatively earlier stabilisation of sea level than has been suggested previously.  相似文献

The pulmonate limpet Siphonaria gigas is the most abundant molluscan grazer in the mid zone on rocky, wave-exposed shores of the Pacific coast of Panama. Erect macroalgae and sessile invertebrates are rare; crustose algae cover ~90% of the rock. The relative abundance of a common blue-green algal crust (Schizothrix calcicola?) is negatively correlated with Siphonaria's abundance. Large-scale removals of the limpet cause rapid increases in percent cover of Schizothrix and concomitant decreases in other crusts, but no changes in the abundance of erect algae or sessile invertebrates. Removing Siphonaria also (1) increases recruitment of crustose algae and barnacles onto new rock and plexiglass substrata, and (2) decreases the abundance of a calcified form of Schizothrix. Harsh conditions during daytime low tides and foraging by fishes at high tide control the microdistribution of most of this region's mobile and sessile benthic organisms. Wave action and substratum heterogeneity modify these constraints: Siphonaria is rare or absent in sheltered areas, especially on homogeneous surfaces, and is most abundant at wave-exposed sites. However, at extremely wave-beaten sites, Siphonaria and other benthic consumers are rare and ineffective. Crustose algae are reduced in abundance and space is dominated by erect macroalgae and/or barnacles. These normally rare species can outcompete crusts only when thermal or desiccation stress and the effects of benthic consumers and fishes are drastically reduced.

To elucidate the impact of biological soil crusts (BSCs) on the establishment of habitat-typical vascular plant species, we studied the effects of seed location (surface versus sub-surface), age of crusts (initial versus stable), long rainy periods (continuous versus discontinuous watering) and microenvironment (cracks versus no cracks). In addition, we investigated growth height, phytomass and N-content of one vascular plant species (Phleum arenarium). Initial crusts were compared with older, stable crusts using seven habitat-typical plant species representing different life forms (annuals versus perennials). Our model ecosystem, situated in the temperate zone (but edaphically dry), is characterised by calcareous sand with threatened pioneer vegetation (Koelerion glaucae). We carefully translocated soil monoliths of these crusts and analysed the effects under common garden conditions.  相似文献

Summary Two major lake periods were discovered in the sand sea of An Nafud and the surrounding areas. In Upper Pleistocene large lakes occurred around the dune area and in the interior of the sand sea. Their deposits were formed between 34 000 and 24 000 BP. The lakes were not conformous to the present dune relief. They had an extension of several km2 and a depth of ca. 10 m. Holocene lakes (8 400–5 400 BP) were of minor extension and restricted to the interdune depressions. Lake sediments consist of cemented sand, calcareous crusts and diatomites. Upper Pleistocene lakes were fresh water lakes, the Halocene lakes were mostly swamps depending on rising and falling aquifers in the dunes. Plant remains as pollen and macro rests show that the environmental changes didn't exceed the system of semidesert comparable to the modern plant cover. However, the Upper Pleistocene lake deposits contain some more soudanian elements as the Holocene sediments in the pollen spectra. Climatically the lake formations are interpreted as depending on a stronger influence of the mediterranean cyclones or an interaction of them with monsoonal air masses.  相似文献

Niche areas of ships, such as lateral thruster tunnels, sea chests, and propellers, are often hot spots for the accumulation of biofouling organisms, a potential source of aquatic invasive species. Yet, the relative importance of different niche areas is poorly resolved, in terms of both total surface area and the associated biota (i.e., the species of organisms and their abundances). To address this information gap, a method was developed to estimate the extent of various niche areas in the global fleet of 120,252 commercial ships active between 1999 and 2013. The total niche area for these vessels was estimated to be 32,996 × 103 m2, representing approximately 10% of the total wetted surface area (WSA) available for colonization by biota. Considering the portion of niche areas relative to the total WSA, it was highest for passenger vessels (27%), followed by tugs (25%), and fishing vessels (21%), with niche areas representing a small portion of the WSA for bulk carriers and tankers (7–8%). Examining the different types of niche areas, thruster tunnels had the greatest total extent (10,189 × 103 m2), representing a disproportionately large contribution (>50%) of the total niche area for passenger vessels and tugs compared to other vessel types. This result, combined with the use and cleaning of thrusters, may render them “super-hot spots” of biofouling. The uneven distribution and extent of niche areas across vessels has implications for transfers of organisms and management strategies to reduce invasions associated with the surfaces of ships.  相似文献

In arid and semi-arid areas with sparse vegetation cover, the spatial pattern of surface soil properties affects water and nutrient flows, and is a question of considerable interest for understanding degradation processes and establishing adequate management measures. In this study, we investigate the spatial distribution of vegetation and surface soil properties (biological crusts, physical crusts, mosses, rock fragments, earthworm casts, fine root accumulation and below-ground stones) in a semi-arid Stipa tenacissima L. steppe in SE Spain. We applied the combination of spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE) and geostatistics to assess the spatial pattern of soil properties and vegetation, and correlation analyses to explore how these patterns were related. SADIE analysis detected significant clumped patterns in the spatial distribution of vegetation, mosses, fine root accumulation and below-ground stone content. Contoured SADIE index of clustering maps suggested the presence of patchiness in the distribution of earthworm casts, fine roots, below-ground stone content, mosses and biological crusts. Correlation analyses suggested that spatial pattern of some soil properties such as biological crusts, moss cover, surface rock fragments, physical crusts and fine roots were significantly related with above-ground plant distribution. We discuss the spatial arrangement of surface soil properties and suggest mechanistic explanations for the observed spatial patterns and relationships.  相似文献

This study addresses the primary and secondary bioreceptivity of schist used as a support for prehistoric rock art in the Côa Valley Archaeological Park (north‐east Portugal) and provides some parameters that can be related to the risk of biologically induced schist weathering. Samples of freshly quarried and naturally weathered schist were characterized in terms of their intrinsic properties and maintained in controlled environmental conditions after inoculation with biofilm‐forming cyanobacteria. The physical properties of the studied schist, as well as its abrasion pH, all varied according to the weathering degree of the samples and so did its susceptibility to colonization by biofilm‐forming cyanobacteria. Complete separation between weathered and unweathered schist samples in terms of laboratory‐induced photosynthetic biomass was obtained by measuring total colour change in the CIE (International Commission on Illumination) L*a*b* colour space. Weathered schist was more bioreceptive than unweathered schist, associated with increased open porosity, water saturation, capillary water and capillarity coefficient and decreased abrasion pH. In the future, it might be possible to determine the susceptibility of schist surfaces to biological colonization through evaluation of colour differences associated with the different weathering degrees presented by those surfaces prior to colonization.  相似文献

Bioremediation of weathered-building stone surfaces   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Atmospheric pollution and weathering of stone surfaces in urban historic buildings frequently results in disfigurement or damage by salt crust formation (often gypsum), presenting opportunities for bioremediation using microorganisms. Conventional techniques for the removal of these salt crusts from stone have several disadvantages: they can cause colour changes; adversely affect the movement of salts within the stone structure; or remove excessive amounts of the original surface. Although microorganisms are commonly associated with detrimental effects to the integrity of stone structures, there is growing evidence that they can be used to treat this type of stone deterioration in objects of historical and cultural significance. In particular, the ability and potential of different microorganisms to either remove sulfate crusts or form sacrificial layers of calcite that consolidate mineral surfaces have been demonstrated. Current research suggests that bioremediation has the potential to offer an additional technology to conservators working to restore stone surfaces in heritage buildings.  相似文献
