For centuries, dinosaur footprints have influenced popular legends and myths in the surroundings of important tracksites. In many regions of China, track-bearing slabs were utilized as building materials and integrated in houses, yards, or cave dwellings, often serving as auspicious symbols or aesthetic decorations. Special birds such as the golden pheasant, widely distributed in China, may have inspired people to consider them as mythic trackmakers. The Zizhou area in northern Shaanxi, China, is famous for tracksites in the lower portion of the early Middle Jurassic Yan'an Formation. Sandstones with dinosaur tracks from these localities have been collected since the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) and are used by villagers as cellar covers, stalls, or millstones. Besides their historical importance, the slabs are a valuable resource for ichnological research. Well-preserved theropod, ornithopod, and stegosaur tracks such as Kayentapus, Eubrontes, Anomoepus and Deltapodus incorporated into manmade structures can be seen while simply walking through some small villages of this area.  相似文献

Dinosaur traces are well known from the western United States in the Colorado Plateau region (Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona). Utah contains the greatest abundance of known and documented dinosaur footprints and trackways. Far less well known, however, is the occurrence and distribution of dinosaur footprint-bearing horizons in Wyoming. Scientific studies over the past 10 years have shown that three of the four Middle and Upper Jurassic formations in northern Wyoming contain dinosaur footprints. Two of the footprint-bearing horizons are located in geologic intervals that were once thought to have been deposited in offshore to nearshore marine settings and represent rare North American examples of Middle Jurassic (Bajocian and Bathonian) dinosaur remains. Some of these new Wyoming sites can be correlated to known dinosaur footprint-bearing horizons or intervals in Utah. Wyoming has a great potential for additional discoveries of new dinosaur footprint-bearing horizons, and further prospecting and study is warranted and will ultimately lead to a much better understanding of the geographic distribution and behavior of the potential footprint-makers.  相似文献

Literature concerning dinosaur footprints or trackways exhibiting abnormal gait or morphology reflecting pathology (ichnopathology) is rare. We report on a number of Jurassic and Cretaceous occurrences of theropod footprints from western North America with unusual morphologies interpreted herein as examples of inferred pathologies, or ichnopathologies. The majority of ichnopathologies are primarily manifested in the digit impressions and include examples of swelling, extreme curvature, dislocation or fracture, and amputation. A number of occurrences are single tracks on ex situ blocks with substantial deformation (inferred dislocation or fracture), or absence of a single digit impression. Two occurrences are from in situ natural mould trackways, one of which is a lengthy trackway of a presumed allosauroid with no noticeable deformation of the digits or feet but with strong inward rotation of the left footprint toward the midline and a pronounced, waddling limp. The other is a tyrannosaurid trackway consisting of three footprints (one right, two left) with the two left prints exhibiting repetitive ichnopathology of a partially missing Digit II impression.  相似文献

The Las Losas site (approximately 500 m2) was cleared in July 1998 and revealed 375 theropod dinosaur footprints. Statistical surveys of their biomorphical and morphometrical data are congruent with a continuous morphological transition among the theropod footprints—a transition which does not allow us to differentiate ichnogroups. Certain footprints show a longitudinal groove in their toes. The foot movement of their trackmakers can be inferred from these grooves. There are also, in this outcrop, i) trackways whose ichnites are either regular or anomalous according to the position of crossing, ii) semiplantigrade trackways with digitigrade sections and iii) trackways that cross the footprint site without variation in their footprints. These facts allow us to infer that: i) the substrate hardness was different in different zones at particular moments, and ii) the variation in the regularity and shape of the footprints depended upon the mud conditions at the moment they were made. Three preferential directions of march are shown by the trackways, suggesting different phases of activity.  相似文献

Dinosaur tracks and swimming traces have been discovered at three localities in the latest Albian Sarten Member of the Mojado Formation, Bisbee Group (= “Anapra Sandstone”), at Cerro de Cristo Rey in Sunland Park, southernmost Dona Ana County, New Mexico. These localities preserve footprints of ornithopod (Caririchnium) and theropod (Magnoavipes) dinosaurs, ?reptilian swimming traces and possible tracks of an ankylosaurian dinosaur. The Sarten Member is of the latest Albian age, so the Cerro de Cristo Rey tracks are slightly younger than the well-known late Albian tracksites of northeastern New Mexico. At Cerro de Cristo Rey, the dominance of ornithopod tracks and absence of sauropod tracks fit regional patterns of late Albian-early Cenomanian track distribution consistent with North American extirpation of sauropods before the end of Albian time. The deltaic/coastal plain depositional setting of the Sarten Member is also remarkably similar to the track-bearing late Albian-Cenomanian sandstones of NE New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and SE Colorado, which also have a tetrapod footprint ichnofacies dominated by ornithopod (Caririchnium) and theropod (Magnoavipes) tracks throughout the so-called “dinosaur freeway.”  相似文献

The first documented dinosaur footprints from Southeast Asia were theropod footprints found in Thailand at Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary. Since then, Mesozoic vertebrate footprints have been discovered in twelve different localities in Thailand. In 2000, dinosaur footprints were found in Phu Kao National Park in Northeastern Thailand, however, they have never been studied in detail. The following study presents the first map, the complete measurements, the geology, and stratigraphy of the site and surrounding area. The study discusses the nature of the trackmaker and the digitigrade character of the footprints. This discovery represents the first documented occurrence of dinosaur footprints inside the Early Cretaceous Sao Khua Formation from Thailand.  相似文献

A large bipedal tridactyl dinosaur trackway from the Late Jurassic of Serwah, near Madar, Arhab district, Republic of Yemen, has been attributed to an ornithopod trackmaker. As the distinction between theropod and ornithopod dinosaurs can pose a challenge, we present additional data to support and reconfirm the previous attribution.  相似文献

Type specimens of the sauropod ichnotaxon Chuxiongpus changlingensis, which was later reassigned to Brontopodus changlingensis, as well as the theropod ichnotaxon Yunnanpus huangcaoensis, both from the Cretaceous Jiangdihe Formation of Yunnan Province, are redescribed in order to document their morphological features. Both, but particularly Y. huangcaoensis, which is considered now a nomen dubium, were originally based on poorly preserved material. Nevertheless, the specimens document a saurischian dominated biota that existed during the deposition of the Jiangdihe Formation from which no skeletal remains are known. B. changlingensis trackways were left by small sauropods that show consistent partial or complete overprint of the manus by the pes. This pattern makes it difficult to calculate manus length, and heteropody can be only estimated.  相似文献

The vertebrate fauna from the Lower Cretaceous Patuxent Formation of Virginia is composed of a single partial fish impression from the James River at Dutch Gap and a diverse tetrapod ichnofauna from near Fredericksburg that includes trace fossils made by frogs, turtles, theropods, sauropods, ankylosaurs, and ornithopods. The footprints occur on overbank deposits preserved locally within a fluvial braided-stream sequence that formed near the western border of the Early Cretaceous Atlantic Coastal Plain.  相似文献

The Late Cretaceous track assemblage of southeastern Poland includes intriguing ichnotaxa with Asian or North American affinities. New finds of the ceratopsian-like ichnite and small hadrosauroid track refer directly to this problem, whereas the re-evaluation of foraminifer taxa estimates the stratigraphic positions of the track-bearing horizon and allowed to understand paleogeographic context of the studied and adjacent areas. The results demonstrate that during the Late Cretaceous times, migration of dinosaurs was possible from Asia through the East European Land to Kukeritz Island and the islands at peri-Tethys area.  相似文献

A new parameter, the Trackway Ratio (TR), is proposed to supplement the previously used trackway gauge to describe and quantify the relative width of trackways in dinosaur quadrupedal gaits. It is expressed as the ratio of the width of the tracks relative to the total width of the trackway (both measured perpendicular to the long axis of the trackway). The ratio may be used with either pes (PTR) or manus (MTR) tracks. The PTR range of values for wide-, medium- and narrow-gauge trackways of previous authors are provisionally suggested to be ≤35%, 36–49% and ≥50%, respectively. The application of such a ratio would permit a more consistent ichnotaxonomy to be adopted where both track morphology and trackway parameters are used to define ichnotaxa.

Determination of the TR, as well as other parameters, will be affected by track preservation quality. Recent experiments on track simulation in the laboratory have shed further light on observations made in the field concerning the value of track measurements (in particular track length and width) recorded from below the surface on which the maker was moving. Experimental track simulations in the laboratory have shown that the dimensions of transmitted tracks preserved below the surface on which the foot was impressed may vary from 65% to 135% of the true dimensions of the indenter. Two case studies are presented that quantify the errors that may be made on calculating TR and the size, gait and speed of the maker, from trackways if the preservation of the tracks are not fully understood.

It is shown that in individual trackways the PTR may vary along the length of the trackway; so that part of the trackway may be classified as wide-gauge and other parts medium-gauge. There is a relationship between variation in PTR and that of pace angulation along the length of a single trackway. An analysis of 42 trackways, principally sauropod, shows a temporal distribution that does not agree closely with previous suggestions relating to narrow- and wide-gauge trackways.  相似文献

Cretaceous–Tertiary (K–T) boundary (ca. 65 Ma) sections on a Southwest Pacific island containing dinosaurs were unknown until March 2003 when theropod bones were recovered from the Takatika Grit on the remote Chatham Islands (latitude 44° S, longitude 176° W), along the Chatham Rise. Tectonic and palaeontologic evidence support the eastward extension of a ca. 900 km land bridge that connected the islands to what is now New Zealand prior to the K–T boundary. The Chathams terrestrial fauna inhabited coastal, temperate environments along a low-lying, narrow, crustal extension of the New Zealand subcontinent, characterised by a tectonically dynamic, volcanic landscape with eroding hills (horsts) adjacent to flood plains and deltas, all sediments accumulating in grabens. This finger-like tract was blanketed with a conifer and clubmoss (Lycopodiopsida) dominated forest. The Chatham Islands region would have, along with New Zealand, provided a dinosaur island sanctuary after separating from the Gondwana margin ca. 80 Ma.  相似文献

The laboratory-controlled simulations of dinosaur footprints in this study revealed characteristic track features that could be used to identify the consistency of sand substrates and provide an insight into the paleoenvironment. A model foot of Hypsilophodon foxii was indented into three sands of four different moisture (= water) contents. The two intermediate moist states were characterized by shallow tridactyl impressions, in which only digits II–IV were impressed, showing details of padding and claws. Where the foot penetrated more deeply, in the dry and saturated states, the hallux and heel were also impressed; in these cases, the foot detail was not preserved accurately and track morphology deviated significantly from that of the foot. Dry sand tracks were characterized by the outward and upward movement of sediment and tracks in saturated sand by mainly downward displacement. The finer-grained saturated sand was also associated with liquefaction and closure of digit imprints. Tracks from the Middle Jurassic Cleveland Basin of Yorkshire showed features of the saturated state. The range of experimental track morphotypes formed by one foot highlighted the difficulties in assigning a print type to a particular trackmaker and the importance of excluding preservational variants from ichnotaxonomic studies.  相似文献

A biostratigraphic sequence based upon dinosaureggshells during the lower and upper Rognacian (upper Cretaceous) in the Aix-en-Provence sedimentary basin (Bouches-du-Rhône, France) has been studied from a morphometric and microstructural viewpoint. Stratigraphic control of eggshell fragment sampling made it possible to follow their evolution throughout the Rognacian. Our results differ from those of certain authors who have worked in this region in that no tendancy toward abnormal eggshell thinness appears at the end of the Cretaceous which could be linked to the problem of dinosaur extinction. Furthermore, we observed no significant increase in the number of bi- or multistratified eggshells («ovum-in-ovo) in the deposits. The microstructural study shows the presence mainly of normal egg-shells belonging to at least three morphotypes.  相似文献

We report a Holocene human and animal footprint site from the Namib Sand Sea, south of Walvis Bay, Namibia. Using these data, we explore intratrail footprint variability associated with small variations in substrate properties using a “whole foot” analytical technique developed for the studies in human ichnology. We demonstrate high levels of intratrail variability as a result of variations in grain size, depositional moisture content, and the degree of sediment disturbance, all of which determine the bearing capacity of the substrate. The two principal trails were examined, which had consistent stride and step lengths, and as such variations in print typology were primarily controlled by substrate rather than locomotor mechanics. Footprint typology varies with bearing capacity such that firm substrates show limited impressions associated with areas of peak plantar pressure, whereas softer substrates are associated with deep prints with narrow heels and reduced medial longitudinal arches. Substrates of medium bearing capacity give displacement rims and proximal movement of sediment, which obscures the true form of the medial longitudinal arch. A simple conceptual model is offered which summarizes these conclusions and is presented as a basis for further investigation into the control of substrate on footprint typology. The method, model, and results presented here are essential in the interpretation of any sites of greater paleoanthropological significance, such as recently reported from Ileret (1.5 Ma, Kenya; Bennett et al.: Science 323 (2009) 1197–1201). The Permian–Triassic succession of the Indian Gondwana Sequence was previously considered to have been deposited in a fluviatile-lacustrine environment. Similarly, earlier Lower Gondwanas of Orissa State (a major part of the Mahanadi Master basin) were considered entirely fresh water deposits. Faunal evidence is still scanty in this master basin. Ichnology and palynology along with a few sedimentary records are reviewed and analysed for inferring marine signature. The marine nature of the Talchir, Karharbari, Barakar, Barren Measures and Kamthi sediments of three major basins (Talcher, Ib River and Athgarh) in Orissa State was predicted on the basis of typical marine ichnofossils. Most of these sediments also contain acritarchs reflecting marine marginal environment throughout the Permian. Moreover, evidence of wave activity, salinity raise and discovery of phosphorite in Permian sediments also strengthen this view.Hence, the previous model of continental facies for the Lower Gondwanas is found to be incorrect. The ichnofossils (Skolithos and Cruziana ichno-facies), acritarchs (Foveofusa, Leiosphaeridia, Greinervillites, etc.) and other palynofossils of marine origin can be utilized as a tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. In the Gondwana basins of Orissa (Mahanadi Master basin), consistent occurrence of marine acritarchs and trace fossils with some typical sedimentary structures such as wave ripples has been studied and reviewed from the Talchir (Early Permian) to Upper Kamthi (Triassic) formations at various time intervals. Here marine incursion could have occurred due to the well known global transgressions during Permian and Triassic.  相似文献

土地利用变化的碳排放与碳足迹研究对了解人类活动对生态环境的扰动程度及其机理、制定有效的碳排放政策具有重要意义。采用1990—2010年四川省能源消费数据和土地利用数据,通过构建碳排放模型、碳足迹及其压力指数模型,对研究区20年来土地利用的碳排放及碳足迹进行了定量分析。结果表明:(1)土地利用变化的碳排放和能源消费碳的足迹呈显著增加趋势。碳排放增加5407.839×10~4t,增长率达143%;能源消费的碳足迹增加1566.622×10~4hm~2,四川全省的生态赤字达1563.598×10~4hm~2。(2)建设用地和林地分别为四川省最大的碳源与碳汇。20年间建设用地的碳排放增加5407.072×10~4t,增长率达126.27%,占碳排放总量的88%以上;林地的碳汇减少10.351×10~4t,但仍占四川省碳汇的96%以上。(3)土地利用碳排放、碳足迹和生态赤字存在明显区域差异。成都平原区碳排放、碳足迹压力最大,生态赤字严重,西部高山高原区和盆周山区碳排放、碳足迹最小,未出现生态赤字;成都、德阳、资阳和内江等地的碳排放、碳足迹压力最大,生态赤字最严重,甘孜、阿坝等地的碳排放、碳足迹最小,未出现生态赤字。(4)土地利用结构与碳排放、碳足迹存在一定的相互关系,趋高的碳源、碳汇比导致土地利用的碳源效应远大于碳汇效应。因此,四川省减排的重点应该在保持或增加现有的林地的同时,主要以降低建设用地的碳排放、碳足迹为主。  相似文献
