The effects of cryopreservation on the frequency and type of chromosome abnormalities in human sperm have been investigated for the first time. With a technique which enables direct visualization of human sperm chromosomes following in vitro penetration of hamster oocytes, sperm samples from 13 normal men were examined before and after being frozen in liquid nitrogen. The overall abnormality frequencies of 17.8% for fresh semen and 13.4% for previously frozen semen were not significantly different (chi 2(1) df = 3.04, p = 0.08). When specific abnormality types were analyzed, only the category of hypohaploidy was significantly different (chi 2(1) df = 6.75, p = 0.009) before (7.5%) and after (3.4%) freezing. Hypohaploidy was significantly higher than hyperhaploidy both prefreeze and postfreeze, and chromosome loss was random. Because the observed excess of hypohaploid cells may be attributable to technical artifact, the aneuploidy levels were estimated by doubling the number of hyperhaploid cells. Neither the adjusted numerical abnormality frequencies (1% prefreeze vs. 0% postfreeze) nor the overall abnormality frequencies (11.8% prefreeze vs. 10.4% postfreeze) were significantly different. The types and distributions of karyotypically abnormal sperm complements (numerical, structural, or combined) observed before and after freezing were not different. Interdonor variability in sperm chromosome abnormality frequencies and a possible donor-dependent response to cryopreservation were suggested by the data. The sex ratios were not affected by cryopreservation and did not differ significantly from the theoretical 50%. It is concluded that cryopreservation does not affect the type or frequencies of chromosome abnormalities or alter the sex ratio in human sperm.  相似文献

Xeric limestone prairies (XLPs) are open, nonforested areas in which herbaceous plant communities occur on shallow, rocky soils derived from calcareous substrates. These grasslands are characterized by dominance of C4 perennial grasses (particularlySchizachyrium scoparium) and are distributed in eastern United States from Missouri and Pennsylvania south to Arkansas and Georgia. XLPs occur in the Ozark Plateaus, Central Lowland, Interior Low Plateaus, Appalachian Plateaus, Ridge and Valley, and Coastal Plain physiographic provinces, and they are developed on Alfisols, Ultisols, Mollisols, Inceptisols, and Vertisols derived from Paleozoic limestones (also Eocene), dolomites, and calcareous shales. The C4 perennial prairie grassS. scoparium is the characteristic dominant taxon in XLPs of eastern United States. However, C3 perennial forbs are dominant in some sites, and C4 annual grasses (Sporobolus spp.) may be locally dominant in shallow-soil-zone microsites. Thirteen taxa apparently are endemic, or nearly so, to this vegetation type, including eight in the Ridge and Valley in Alabama (Cahaba River valley), four in the Ozark Plateaus in Missouri and Arkansas, and one in the Ridge and Valley of West Virginia and Virginia. Various types of information are used to construct a conceptual model of the origin, maintenance, and successional dynamics of XLPs. Affinities of XLPs in eastern United States to other herbaceous vegetation types in eastern and western North America are discussed, and directions for future research are suggested.  相似文献

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that affects approximately 1% of the general population. The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system has been implicated in several genetic studies of SCZ. The myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) gene, which is located close to the HLA region, is considered a candidate for SCZ due to its association with white matter abnormalities and its importance in mediating the complement cascade. Four polymorphisms in the MOG gene (CA)n (TAAA)n, and two intronic polymorphisms, C1334T and C10991T, were investigated for the possibility of association with SCZ using 111 SCZ proband and their families. We examined the transmission of the alleles of each of these polymorphisms with the transmission disequilibrium test. We did not observe significant evidence for biased transmission of alleles at the (CA)n (chi2=2.430, 6 df, P=0.876) (TAAA)n (chi2=3.550, 5 df, P=0.616), C1334T (chi2=0.040, 1 df, P=0.841) and C10991T (chi2=0.154, 1 df, P=0.695) polymorphisms. Overall haplotype analysis using the TRANSMIT program was also not significant (chi2=7.954, 9 df, P=0.539). Furthermore, our results comparing mean age at onset in the genotype groups using the Kruskal-Wallis Test were not significant. Our case-control analyses (182 cases age-, sex- and ethnicity-matched with healthy controls) and combined z-score [(CA)n: z-score=-1.126, P=0.130; (TAAA)n: z-score=-0.233, P=0.408; C1334T: z-score=0.703, P=0.241; C10991T: z-score=0.551, P=0.291] were also not significant. Although our data are negative, the intriguing hypothesis for MOG in SCZ may warrant further investigation of this gene.  相似文献

Abstract: Since 1980, northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) range-wide populations declined 3.9% annually. Within the West Gulf Coastal Plain Bird Conservation Region in the south-central United States, populations of this quail species have declined 6.8% annually. These declines sparked calls for land use change and prompted implementation of various conservation practices. However, to effectively reverse these declines and restore northern bobwhite to their former population levels, habitat conservation and management efforts must target establishment and maintenance of sustainable populations. To provide guidance for conservation and restoration of habitat capable of supporting sustainable northern bobwhite populations in the West Gulf Coastal Plain, we modeled their spatial distribution using landscape characteristics derived from 1992 National Land Cover Data and bird detections, from 1990 to 1994, along 10-stop Breeding Bird Survey route segments. Four landscape metrics influenced detections of northern bobwhite: detections were greater in areas with more grassland and increased aggregation of agricultural lands, but detections were reduced in areas with increased density of land cover edge and grassland edge. Using these landscape metrics, we projected the abundance and spatial distribution of northern bobwhite populations across the entire West Gulf Coastal Plain. Predicted populations closely approximated abundance estimates from a different cadre of concurrently collected data but model predictions did not accurately reflect bobwhite detections along species-specific call-count routes in Arkansas and Louisiana. Using similar methods, we also projected northern bobwhite population distribution circa 1980 based on Land Use Land Cover data and bird survey data from 1976 to 1984. We compared our 1980 spatial projections with our spatial estimate of 1992 populations to identify areas of population change. Additionally, we used our projection of the spatial distribution and abundance of bobwhite to predict areas of population sustainability. Our projections of population change and sustainability provide guidance for targeting habitat conservation and rehabilitation efforts for restoration of northern bobwhite populations in the West Gulf Coastal Plain.  相似文献

In recent years, the development of new tools to gather field information about vector ecological parameters has increased. This report evaluated the BG-Sentinel Trap (BGS-Trap), a promising new attempt to improve collection of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti. The efficacy of the BGS-Trap was compared with the CDC backpack aspirator, one of the commonest used methods for capturing adult mosquitoes. BGS-Traps captured significantly more Ae. aegypti males (chi2 = 21.774, df = 1, P < 0.05) and females (chi2 = 56.007, df = 1, P < 0.05) than CDC aspirator during all days of field collection. However, CDC aspirator was significantly more efficient to capture Culex quinquefasciatus males (chi2 = 5.681, df = 1, P < 0.05) and females (chi2 = 6.553, df = 1, P < 0.05). BGS-Traps captured host-seeking females (varying between 68.75 to 89.8%) in detriment of females in other behavioral and physiological stages. BGS-Traps proved to be efficient and can be used for monitoring adult mosquito populations.  相似文献

Identifying an effective protocol for sampling crayfish in streams that vary in habitat and physical/chemical characteristics has proven problematic. We evaluated an active, combined-gear (backpack electrofishing and dipnetting) sampling protocol in 20 Coastal Plain streams in Louisiana. Using generalized linear models and rarefaction curves, we evaluated environmental and gear (separate and combined) effects on crayfish catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE), orbital carapace lengths, sex ratios, frequencies of rare species, and sample richness. Although pooled data from combined gears showed greater total numbers of crayfishes, CPUE, and richness compared to either gear individually, combined gear and backpack electrofisher results differed minimally. Overall, richness was negatively related to specific conductance, indicating potential agricultural influence. Neither crayfish sex ratios, lengths, nor frequencies of rare species differed by gear; however, combining data from both gears ensured crayfish were captured in all study streams, which was not found for electrofishing or dipnetting alone. Species accumulation and rarefaction curves indicated sampling was sufficient for recording crayfish diversity at the scale of the study and that adding streams (versus sites within streams) would be most effective for watershed-scale studies. Our results suggested the combined gear protocol was effective for assessing crayfish population and assemblage characteristics in these Coastal Plain streams.  相似文献

The present study detected two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) at the PLA2G4D locus, rs2459692 and rs4924618, to investigate a genetic association between the PLA2G4D gene and schizophrenia. A total of 236 Chinese parent-offspring trios of Han descent were recruited for the genetic analysis. The transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) did not show allelic association either for rs2459692 (chi(2) = 0.217, P = 0.641) or for rs4924618 (chi(2) = 0.663, P = 0.416). To see the combined effect of the PLA2G4D locus with the other three PLA2G4 genes, we applied the above two SNPs as a conditional marker to test the pair-wise combination for a disease association. The conditioning on allele (COA) test revealed a weak association for the rs2459692-PLA2G4A combination (chi(2) = 6.03, df = 2, P = 0.049), the rs2459692-PLA2G4B combination (chi(2) = 7.16, df = 3, P = 0.028) and the rs4924618-PLA2G4C combination (chi(2) = 7.01, df = 2, P = 0.03), whereas the conditioning on genotype (COG) test showed a weak association only for the rs4924618-PLA2G4C combination (chi(2) = 8.52, df = 3, P = 0.036). Because we performed a multi-locus analysis in this study, the weak association shown by the conditional tests could make little biological sense. In conclusion, the PLA2G4D gene may not be involved in a susceptibility to schizophrenia.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible roles of the cytokines genes in the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Polymorphisms in the genes encoding IL1B, IL1RN, TNFA, LTA, IL6, IL8 H IL10 were investigated in COPD patients (N = 319) and healthy individuals (N = 403) living in Ufa, the Republic of Bashkortostan. We observed that IL1RN*2/IL1RN*2 genotype of ILRN gene was associated with susceptibility for COPD (9.8% vs. 4.67%; chi(2)= 5.45, df= 1, P = 0.02; OR = 2.21). Analysis of the LTA gene polymorphic locus A252G showed that in patients with COPD, the frequency of the GG genotype was significantly higher than that in the control group (7.84% vs. 3.72%; chi(2) = 5.00, df= 1, P = 0.025). The increase of this genotype was significant in case of stage IV of COPD (11.18% vs. 4.79%; chi(2) = 3.075, df= 1, P = 0.07). Frequency of genotype combination TNFA-308 G/G and LTA252 A/A significantly decreased in COPD group (38.55% vs. 46.93% in control group; chi(2) = 8.82, df= 1, P = 0.0039). The frequency of GG genotype of the IL6 gene was higher in the patients with stage IV of COPD (43.75% vs. 31.54%, chi(2) = 4.14, P = 0.041). Our results indicate that the genotype frequency of the T(-511)C, T3953C of IL1B, G(-308)A of TNFA, G(-1 74)C of IL6, A(-251)C of IL8 and C(-627)A of ILl0 genes polymorphisms was similar in COPD and healthy control groups.  相似文献

To assess the role that polymorphisms of cytochrome P450 genes play in genetic predisposition to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the allele and genotype distributions of CYPIA1 (2455 A/G, 3801T/C) and CYP1A2 (-2464T/delT, -163C/A) genes were studied in Tatar and Russian COPD patients and in cases of healthy individuals (Russian, Tatar and Bashkir), residents of Bashkortostan. It was shown that the CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 genes haplotypes frequency distribution patterns do not differed between Tatars and Russians ethnic groups (chi2 = 0.973, df = 3, p = 1.00 and chi2 = 1.546, df = 3, p = 0.92, respectively). Analysis of the the CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 genes haplotypes revealed statistically significant differences in the haplotypes frequency distributions between Bashkirs versus Russians and Tatars (chi2 = 12.328, df= 3,p = 0.008; chi2 = 9.218, df=3, p = 0.034, respectively for CYP1A1 gene and (chi2 = 18.779, df=3, p = 0.0001, chi = 14.326, df=3, p = 0.003, respectively for CYP1A2 gene). The (-2467)delT allele and CYP1A2*1D haplotype of CYPIA2 gene was associated with higher risk of COPD in Tatar ethnic group (OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.24-2.71, chi2 = 9.48, p = 0.003 and chi2 = 9.733, p = 0.0027, Pcor = 0.008; OR = 3.908, 95% CI 1.56-10.19, respectively). On the other hand the CYP1A2*1A haplotype had protective effect (chi2 = 6.319, p = 0.0127, Pcor = 0.038; OR = 0.6012, 95% CI 0.402-0.898). But at the same time we did not find any differences in the genotypes and haplotypes frequency distributions of the CYP1A2 gene within the patients and healthy groups in Russian ethnic group. We also did not find any association of CYP1A1 gene with COPD in ethnic groups of Bashkortostan.  相似文献

Question: Can the geographic patterning of endemic plant species inform reserve selection in a region of high endemism? Location: The Southeastern Coastal Plain of North America, focusing primarily on the imperiled longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P. Miller) ecosystem. Methods: We documented the high level of plant endemism in the region, and characterized the endemic taxa into distributional subregions. Results: A total of 1630 plant taxa are endemic to the Coastal Plain, a large proportion of which are endemic to phytogeographical subregions within the Coastal Plain, with particularly large numbers of narrow endemics occurring in the East Gulf Coastal Plain and Florida Peninsula. Conclusions: This pattern of local endemism presents challenges in conserving the full biota of the region: a reserve system focusing on few and large conservation areas has theoretical benefits for long‐term management and viability, but will fail to capture many local endemics. We propose that the dispersed distribution of endemic species will require a mixture of large core reserves and smaller satellite reserves.  相似文献

Several studies suggest that the X chromosome may contain a gene for schizophrenia. In the present study, we recruited 142 male schizophrenic patients and their biological mothers from all parts of the United Kingdom to detect a genetic association for the SYP/CACNA1F locus in the Xp11 region and the FACL4 locus in the Xq22.3-Xq23 region. The haplotype-based haplotype relative risk (HHRR) analysis showed allelic association for rs2071316 (chi2=6.85, P=0.009) and rs5905724 (chi2=5.3, P=0.021) at the CACNA1F locus, but not for rs5943414 and rs1324805 at the FACL4 locus and rs3817678 at the SYP locus. The haplotype analysis showed a weak association for the rs3817678-rs2071316-rs5905724 haplotypes (chi2=12.19, df=4, P=0.016) but did not show such an association for the rs5943414-rs1324805 haplotypes (chi2=3.96, df=2, P=0.138). Because the linkage disequilibrium signal was detected only at the CACNA1F locus, this gene should perhaps be considered as being a candidate for schizophrenia although further work is needed to draw firm conclusions.  相似文献

The hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) is among the most intriguing and imperiled amphibians in North America. Since the 1970s and 80s, western populations of the Ozark and eastern subspecies in Missouri have declined by nearly 80%. As a result of population declines, the Ozark hellbender was recently federally protected as an endangered species, and the eastern subspecies was granted protection under CITES. Although habitat degradation is probably the biggest threat to hellbender populations, recent evidence suggests that pathogens including chytrid fungus and “flesh-eating” bacteria may also contribute to declines in Ozark hellbenders. Leeches, which are very common on Ozark hellbenders, have recently been implicated as possible vectors of disease among Ozark hellbenders but have not been described in eastern hellbenders or outside of Missouri and Arkansas. We discovered a population of leeches on eastern hellbenders in southwest Virginia and confirmed that the species of leech is within the genus Placobdella, but is morphologically and genetically distinct from all previously described leech species. We named the new species Placobdella appalachiensis sp. n. Moser and Hopkins, based on the mountainous region in which it was discovered. Our surveys over a three consecutive year period suggested that this leech species may be patchily distributed and/or have a narrow geographic range. We consistently detected leeches at one site (mean prevalence in 80 hellbenders = 27.5%; median intensity = 3.0 leeches per parasitized hellbender [range 1 – >250 leeches]) during three years of surveys, but we never found leeches in any of our other seven study sites in two streams (mean prevalence in 139 hellbenders = 0%). We found a significant positive relationship between hellbender body size and the intensity of parasitism, and we suggest the possibility that the behavioral ecology of adults leading up to reproduction may increase their encounter rates with parasites. We discuss the potential conservation implications of discovery of leeches in this stream, and make recommendations for future mitigation and monitoring efforts.  相似文献

Workers in the petroleum distribution trades experience relatively low-level exposures to gasoline vapors whose consequences have not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in the hematological parameters among filling station workers who were occupationally exposed to gasoline. The target group for the study consisted of 41 workers from eight filling stations of Shiraz (south of Iran). The control group consisted of 27 healthy subjects matched for age and sex from general population. The complete blood count analysis was done in one laboratory. Using PCR-based method, the genotypes of glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) and M1 (GSTM1) were determined. Workers were divided into three exposure groups according to employment history: duration less than 1 year, 1-5 years, and more than 5 years. Comparison was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test. In the individuals with the presence of both GSTT1 and GSTM1 functional alleles, comparison between four exposure groups revealed no significant difference for studied hematological variables. There were statistically significant differences between study groups, with only one functional allele, either GSTT1 or GSTM1, for relative number of lymphocytes (chi(2)=9.147, df=3, P=0.027) and neutrophils (chi(2)=9.951, df=3, and P=0.019), and absolute number of lymphocytes (chi(2)=9.135, df=3, and P=0.028), and RBC (chi(2)=10.586, df=3, and P=0.014). These findings could indicate the possible protective effect of concurrent presence of GSTM1 and GSTT1 enzymes on the hematopoietic system of filling station workers.  相似文献

Platanthera ciliaris is a butterfly-pollinated, terrestrial orchid with a loose terminal raceme of 10–50 orange flowers, characterized by a long nectariferous spur. In the southeastern United States, P. ciliaris occurs in the Appalachian Mountains and Coastal Plain physiographic provinces, but rarely in the intervening Piedmont. Of 153 plants that flowered in a Mountain population in 1983, 54 (35.2%) flowered again in 1984; in a Coastal Plain population, only 51 of 306 (16.7%) flowered in both years. Experimental pollinations showed that P. ciliaris is self-compatible but not autogamous. Nectar volume increased over the 6- to 7-day life span of a flower, reaching a maximum of 4 μl and 1.0 mg of sugar (Mountains) or 6 μl and 1.2 mg of sugar (Coastal Plain). Nectar concentrations were relatively constant in flowers of all ages and averaged 23% in the Mountains and 19% in the Coastal Plain. Diurnal patterns of nectar secretion were not well-defined, but most nectar appeared to be produced overnight. In the Mountains Papilio troilus (spicebush swallowtail) was the most frequent and effective pollinator, whereas in the Coastal Plain P. palamedes (palamedes swallowtail) was the predominant pollinator. These large butterflies were most active in the late morning (0930–1030) and early afternoon (1230–1400). Levels of pollinator service, as assessed by rates of removal and insertion of pollinia, were higher in the Mountains (0.81, 0.86) than in the Coastal Plain (0.63, 0.67). These values were reflected in higher levels of fruit-set in Mountain (83.9% in 1983, 86.5% in 1984) than in Coastal Plain (63.8, 65.5%) populations. Combining these observations with the fact that hand pollination increased fruit-set of Coastal Plain flowers 6.5–13.5% above open-pollinated controls, it appears that fruit-set in P. ciliaris is pollen-limited.  相似文献

Improving biological indicators to better assess the condition of streams   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Biological indicators of stream condition are in use by water resource managers worldwide. The State of Maryland and many other organizations that use Indices of Biotic Integrity (IBIs) must determine when and how to refine their IBIs so that better stream condition information is provided. With completion of the second statewide round in 2004, the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) had collected data from 2500 stream sites, more than doubling the number of sites that were available for the original IBI development. This larger dataset provided an opportunity for the MBSS to address the following shortcomings in the original IBIs: (1) substantial disturbance apparent in some reference sites, (2) fish IBIs could not be applied to very small streams, (3) natural variability within IBIs (based on regions) resulted in some stream types (e.g., coldwater and blackwater streams) receiving lower IBI scores and (4) one IBI was not able to discriminate degradation as desired (i.e., Coastal Plain fish IBI). Therefore, development of new fish and benthic macroinvertebrate IBIs was undertaken to achieve the goals of: (1) increased confidence that the reference conditions are minimally disturbed, (2) including more natural variation (such as stream size) across the geographic regions and stream types of Maryland and (3) increased sensitivity of IBIs by using more classes (strata) and different metric combinations. New fish IBIs were developed for four geographical and stream type strata: Coastal Plain, Eastern Piedmont, warmwater Highlands and coldwater Highlands streams; new benthic macroinvertebrate IBIs were developed for three geographical strata: Coastal Plain, Eastern Piedmont and Highlands streams. The addition of one new fish IBI and one new benthic macroinvertebrate IBI partitioned natural variability into more homogeneous strata. At the same time, smaller streams (i.e., those draining catchments <300 ac), which constituted a greater proportion of streams (25%) sampled in Round Two (2000–2004) than Round One (1995–1997), because of the finer map scale, were included in the reference conditions used to develop the new IBIs. The resulting new IBIs have high classification efficiencies of 83–96% and are well balanced between Type I and Type II errors. By scoring coldwater streams, smaller streams and to some extent blackwater streams higher, the new IBIs improve on the original IBIs. Overall, the new IBIs provide better assessments of stream condition to support sound management decisions, without requiring substantial changes by cooperating stream assessment programs.  相似文献

The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been implicated in amphibian declines worldwide. In vitro laboratory studies and those done on wild populations indicate that Bd grows best at cool temperatures between 17 and 25 degrees C. In the present study, we tested whether moderately elevating the ambient temperature to 30 degrees C could be an effective treatment for frogs infected with Bd. We acquired 35 bullfrogs Rana catesbeiana from breeding facilities and 36 northern cricket frogs Acris crepitans from the wild and acclimated them to either 23 or 26 degrees C for 1 mo. Following the acclimation period, frogs were tested for the presence of Bd using qPCR TaqMan assays. The 12 R. catesbeiana and 16 A. crepitans that tested positive for Bd were subjected to 30 degrees C for 10 consecutive days before returning frogs to their starting temperatures. Post-treatment testing revealed that 27 of the 28 frogs that had tested positive were no longer infected with Bd; only a single A. crepitans remained infected following treatment. This result indicates that elevating ambient temperature to a moderate 30 degrees C can be effective as a treatment for Bd infection in captive amphibians, and suggests that heat may be a superior alternative to antifungal drugs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To investigate the extent to which geographical variations in mortality from ischaemic heart disease and stroke in Britain are influenced by factors in early life or in adulthood. DESIGN--Longitudinal study of migrants. SUBJECTS--1% sample of residents in England and Wales born before October 1939 and enumerated at the 1971 census (the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys'' longitudinal study). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE--18,221 deaths from ischaemic heart disease and 9899 deaths from stroke during 1971-88 were analysed by areas of residence in 1939 and 1971. These included 2928 deaths from ischaemic heart disease and 1608 deaths from stroke among individuals moving between 14 areas defined by the major conurbations and nine standard administrative regions of England and Wales. RESULTS--The southeast to northwest gradient in mortality from ischaemic heart disease was related significantly to both the 1939 area (chi 2 = 6.09, df = 1) and area in 1971 (chi 2 = 5.05, df = 1). Geographical variations in mortality from stroke were related significantly to the 1939 area (chi 2 = 4.09, df = 1) but the effect of area in 1971 was greater (chi 2 = 8.07, df = 1). The effect of 1971 area on mortality from stroke was largely due to a lower risk of death from stroke among individuals moving into Greater London compared with migrants to the rest of the South East region (chi 2 = 4.54, df = 1). CONCLUSIONS--Geographical variations in mortality from cardiovascular disease in Britain may be partly determined by genetic factors, environmental exposures, or lifestyle acquired early in life, but the risk of fatal ischaemic heart disease and stroke changes on migration between areas with differing mortality. There is disagreement among ecologists as to whether ecosystem system behavior in general is the net result of all of the complex internal system interactions (bottom-driven) or if the behavior is driven by a limited number of key processes (top-driven). If ecosystems are primarily bottom-driven in nature, then it is unlikely that any two complex ecosystems will ever behaviorally converge as a simple matter of probability, or that their behaviors will ever be predictable. Conversely, evidence of ecosystem convergence would suggest that the systems are top-driven, with the corollary that their behaviors can be understood (and therefore in principle predicted) without a complete understanding of their internal workings. Research has demonstrated that body mass distributions of terrestrial animals broadly reflect ecosystem function. Thus, comparable but causally disconnected terrestrial ecosystems that demonstrate similar body mass distributions would suggest ecosystem convergence. To look for this possible convergence, I generated body mass distributions in a time series for late Miocene North American mammal faunas from the Gulf Coastal Plains, Great Plains, and Pacific coastal region, and compared them with data from the modern Serengeti savanna region. The data show that during the early late Miocene Gulf Coastal Plain faunas resembled each other but were distinctly different from that of the Serengeti, the Great Plains fauna resembled the Serengeti, while the Pacific Coast fauna showed no resemblance to any of the others. However, during the latest Miocene the Gulf Coastal Plain faunas were transformed so as to strongly resemble the Serengeti fauna. The resemblance with the Serengeti was maintained by the Great Plains faunas until at least the end of the Miocene, while the Pacific Coast faunas remained distinctly different from the others. These findings suggest that the late Miocene ecosystems of the Gulf Coastal Plain and Great Plains regions (but not the Pacific Coast region) converged with that of the Serengeti savanna fauna and thus that these ecosystems were/are top-driven rather than bottom-driven in nature.  相似文献

The caterpillars of Stenoma cathosiota Meyrick feed on Roupala montana Aubl. (Proteaceae) in the cerrado of the Distrito Federal, Brazil. They construct shelters by joining leaves of the plant where they feed and pupate. The caterpillars are parasitized by a wasp (Hymenoptera: Brachonidae), which emerges from the pupae. Caterpillar abundance and parasitism frequency were associated in an area of frequently burned cerrado (biennial fire) and in another area that burns sporadically (1987 and 1994). For S. cathosiota, the variation among years in a single area, with sporadic fires, was greater than the variation among areas with different fire regimes. Caterpillar abundance among years was significantly different in the area that burns sporadically (chi2 = 24.06; df. = 1; P = 0.000). However, there were no significant differences on caterpillar abundance between areas for the same period (chi2 = 3.45; df. = 1; P = 0.063). Parasitism frequency was high, reaching 29% of the collected caterpillars, and did not differ among areas. The great temporal variation in abundance of lepidopteran caterpillars in the cerrado makes it difficult to determine the effects that fire exerts over this fauna.  相似文献

Pitcher plant bogs, or carnivorous plant wetlands, have experienced extensive habitat loss and fragmentation throughout the southeastern United States Coastal Plain, resulting in an estimated reduction to <3% of their former range. This situation has lead to increased management attention of these habitats and their carnivorous plant species. However, conservation priorities focus primarily on the plants since little information currently exists on other community members, such as their endemic arthropod biota. Here, we investigated the population structure of one of these, the obligate pitcher plant moth Exyra semicrocea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene sequences. Examination of 221 individuals from 11 populations across eight southeastern US states identified 51 unique haplotypes. These haplotypes belonged to one of two divergent (~1.9-3.0%) lineages separated by the Mississippi alluvial plain. Populations of the West Gulf Coastal Plain exhibited significant genetic structure, contrasting with similarly distanced populations east of the Mississippi alluvial plain. In the eastern portion of the Coastal Plain, an apparent transition zone exists between two regionally distinct population groups, with a well-established genetic discontinuity for other organisms coinciding with this zone. The structure of E. semicrocea appears to have been influenced by patchy pitcher plant bog habitats in the West Gulf Coastal Plain as well as impacts of Pleistocene interglacials on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin. These findings, along with potential extirpation of E. semicrocea at four visited, but isolated, sites highlight the need to consider other endemic or associated community members when managing and restoring pitcher plant bog habitats.  相似文献
