Summary The efflux of sodium ions from the loggerhead turtle,Caretta caretta, was investigated when animals were acclimated to seawater, freshwater, and during the acclimation period after transfer from seawater to freshwater. The rate of sodium loss in animals acclimated to seawater was found to be 3 M Na · g–1 · hr–1. Cannulation of the cloaca showed that only 5% of the gross efflux of sodium was via the cloaca and it was calculated that 60% of the gross efflux was via nasal gland secretion and 35 % via integumentary diffusional loss. Cannulation experiments indicated that a significant amount of sodium may enter the body via the cloaca. Transfer of animals from seawater to freshwater resulted in a decline of sodium efflux by 90–99 % within 6 hr, and a further decline to only approximately 0 01 M Na · g–1· hr–1 after 1–2 days in freshwater. Cannulation experiments of individuals acclimated to freshwater indicated that the role of the cloaca in sodium loss in freshwater was minimal. It was calculated that sodium loss in freshwater is so small that survival in freshwater for at least 20 days is possible without active extraction of sodium from the medium. No evidence could be found for active uptake of sodium ions from freshwater baths byCaretta. This research was supported by NSF grant GB 16839.  相似文献

Summary Total body water decreased significantly in terrapins exposed to sea water (SW). Although the intracellular fluid decreased somewhat upon SW exposure, the decline in extracellular fluid was almost twice as great. Under conditions of voluntary drinking after salt loading, terrapins substantially increased the volume of the extracellular fluid while maintaining the intracellular fluid near the freshwater (FW) control levels. FW terrapins were consistently heavier than animals of the same plastron length exposed to SW. Thus expression of body fluid volumes as ml/cm plastron length rather than as % body weight is necessary to correct for the loss of total body water with progressive dehydration. Fasted terrapins in SW lost weight at 0.32% weight/day, whereas the rate in FW was 0.21%/day. Water influx and efflux in SW were 0.17 and 0.16 ml/100 g·h respectively. When the efflux was increased by the calculated value for unmeasured respiratory loss, it exceeded the influex by 0.01 ml/100 g·h. Consequently the net water loss determined with radiotracers (equivalent to 0.24% weight/day) was similar to the difference between the weight losses in SW and FW (0.11%/day). Partitioning studies indicated that the majority of water exchange between the terrapin and SW occurs through the integument. Terrapins in SW underwent a concentration of the body fluids, most of which can be attributed to water loss, not electrolyte gain. The rates of Na influx and efflux were quite low (usually ranging from 6–10 moles/100 g·h). In two terrapins the injection of NaCl loads resulted in eight- to 19-fold increases in Na efflux. The uptake of Na from SW occurred orally. The skin was virtually impermeable to Na. The salt gland and possibly the cloaca were the major routes of Na efflux. The injection of NaCl loads resulted in an increase in cephalic Na excretion from a mean of 3.2 moles/100 g·h to 32.5 moles/100 g·h. Terrapins in SW exhibited a significant increase in bladder urine [K] over the FW controls. There was a direct relationship between plasma [Na], urine [K], and lachrymal salt gland Na–K ATPase content. In comparing SW terrapins with FW painted turtles (Chrysemys) exposed to SW radiotracer studies demonstrated a similarity in Na influx, but there was at least a four-fold increase in water exchange in the painted turtle. It seems likely that the skins of many aquatic reptiles (marine, estuarine and FW) are impermeable to Na but differ markedly in water permeability.  相似文献

Summary Ionic and respiratory parameters of large rainbow trout were measured during freshwater to seawater transfer. Branchial Cl efflux increased immediately on transfer and urine excretion of Cl increased after 14 h. Branchial Na+ efflux however did not start to build up until 4–5 h after transfer and there was no increase in urinary Na+ excretion. These differences are discussed. The acid/base balance showed no major changes but arterial fell greatly on transfer but by 5 h had returned to 82% of the normal level. After 24 h arterial had decreased markedly again and this continued to the end of the experiment. On seawater transfer oxygen consumption fell gradually for 5 h and then rapidly increased back to the freshwater value. Possible explanations of these observations are discussed in relation to gill morphology and function during the transfer period.  相似文献

Summary Isolated gills of the freshwater mussel,Ligumia subrostrata, accumulate Na from a pondwater bathing medium. The rate of Na transport by the isolated gill is 13.2±1.1 mol (g dry gill·10 min)–1 which equals or exceeds the estimated Na transport rate of intact animals. Sodium influx is saturable with aV max of 13.6±1.2 mol (g dry gill·10 min)–1 and an affinity (K s) of 0.17 mM Na/l. The isolated gills survive prolonged exposure to pondwater with a constant of 890 l O2 (g dry gill·h)–1 over a 4 h period. Sodium transport in the isolated gills is stimulated 80% above control values by 10–4 M serotonin, 60% by 0.5 mM cAMP and 60% by 12.5 g/ml nystatin. Sodium influx is inhibited by 0.5 mM amiloride and 1 mM lithium.  相似文献

Summary The lachrymal salt glands ofChelonia mydas were functional when hatchlings emerged from the nest. Osmotic concentrations up to 720 mosmol kg–1 were recorded in spontaneously produced tears (salt gland secretions). When injected with a Na+ load (1500–2700 mol (100 g)–1) newly emerged hatchlings produced tears ranging in osmotic concentration from 1000–1900 mosmol kg–1 with Na+ secretion rates from single glands of 200–475 mol (100 g·h)–1. In these circumstances the rate of sodium excretion, via the salt glands, was equivalent to the sodium content of 0.2 to 0.5 ml of sea water per hour. Since the apparent drinking rate of hatchlings within the first two days of entering sea water was approximately 0.5 to 1.7 ml per day, the excretion of Na+ imbibed by drinking is well within the secretory capacity of the lachrymal salt glands. In feeding hatchlings extraordinarily high Na+ secretion rates were induced by Na+ loading. Hatchlings which were loaded with Na+ by injection (1500–5400 mol (100 g)–1) produced tears having osmotic concentrations between 1500 and >2000 mosmol kg–1. The Na+ secretion rates from single glands were 750–4185 mol (100 g·h)–1 with extremely high short term rates of 10700 mol (100 g·h)–1 (50 mol min–1 for 28 g hatchlings). In terms of gland mass the highest long term secretion rate translates into 21 mmol of Na+ per gram of salt gland per hour and is the highest secretion rate yet recorded for a reptilian salt gland. This rate is almost three times the highest rate recorded for sea snakes (8 mmol g·h–1) and is similar to rates commonly observed in avian salt glands (25 mmol g·h–1).Secretion by the lachrymal salt glands was initiated by increased blood concentrations of Na+ or K+, K+ being as effective as Na+ but with the composition of the teras being virtually unchanged compared to tears from Na+ stimulated hatchlings. Preliminary experiments indicated that secretion was not initiated by increased Cl concentration in the blood or by increased volume or osmotic concentration of the blood.Abbreviation O.P. osmotic pressure  相似文献

Thylakoids isolated from cells of the red alga Porphyridium cruentum exhibit an increased PS I activity on a chlorophyll basis with increasing growth irradiance, even though the stoichiometry of Photosystems I and II in such cells shows little change (Cunningham et al. (1989) Plant Physiol 91: 1179–1187). PS I activity was 26% greater in thylakoids of cells acclimated at 280 mol photons · m–2 · s–1 (VHL) than in cells acclimated at 10 mol photons · m–2 · s–1 (LL), indicating a change in the light absorbance capacity of PS I. Upon isolating PS I holocomplexes from VHL cells it was found that they contained 132±9 Chl/P700 while those obtained from LL cells had 165±4 Chl/P700. Examination of the polypeptide composition of PS I holocomplexes on SDS-PAGE showed a notable decrease of three polypeptides (19.5, 21.0 and 22 kDa) in VHL-complexes relative to LL-complexes. These polypeptides belong to a novel LHC I complex, recently discovered in red algae (Wolfe et al. (1994a) Nature 367: 566–568), that lacks Chl b and includes at least six different polypeptides. We suggest that the decrease in PS I Chl antenna size observed with increasing irradiance is attributable to changes occurring in the LHC I-antenna complex. Evidence for a Chl-binding antenna complex associated with PS II core complexes is lacking at this point. LHC II-type polypeptides were not observed in functionally active PS II preparations (Wolfe et al. (1994b) Biochimica Biophysica Acta 1188: 357–366), nor did we detect polypeptides that showed immunocross-reactivity with LHC II specific antisera (made to Chlamydomonas and Euglena LHC II).Abbreviations Bis-Tris bis(2-hydroxyethyl)imino-tris(hydroxymethyl)methane - DCPIP 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol - -dm dodecyl--d-maltoside - HL high light of 150 mol photons · m–2 · s–1 - LGB lower green band - LHC I light-harvesting complex of PS I - LHC II light-harvesting complex of PS II - LL low light of 10 mol photons · m–2 · s–1 - ML medium light of 50 mol photons · m–2 · s–1 - MES 2-(N-morpholino) ethanesulfonic acid - P700 reaction center of PS I - PFD photon flux density - Trizma tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane - UGB upper green band - VHL very high light of 280 mol photons · m–2 · s–1  相似文献

Summary Renal clearance studies were performed in European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) in order to determine the extent of ureteral sodium excretion under control conditions and during an acute, hyperosmotic salt stress. These experiments also estimated the contribution of the lower intestine (colon and cloaca) to postrenal solute reabsorption by making both cloacal and ureteral urine collections in the same birds. A comparison of ureteral vs cloacal excretion rates found significantly higher sodium (9.09±1.30 vs 1.03±0.38 Eq·kg–1·min–1) and chloride (4.15±0.56 vs 1.00±0.38 Eq·kg–1·min–1) excretion rates during the ureteral collections. Fractional excretion of sodium was also significantly higher during ureteral collections, but this value did not exceed 1% of the filtered sodium load during either collection series. Urine flow rate was significantly higher during cloacal collections, suggesting osmotic back-flux of water across the cloacal wall. Infusion of a 1M NaCl solution resulted in rapid increases in glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urine flow rate, and urine osmolality. Fractional sodium and water reabsorption decreased by 11% and 4%, respectively. Glomerular counts and size distribution profiles, measured by in vivo alcian blue labelling, provided no evidence for a reduction in the number of filtering glomeruli during hyperosmotic saline loading. We conclude that renal sodium excretion rates for the starling are similar to those seen in other avian species and in mammals. These studies also provide direct evidence for postrenal modification of urine in this species, even under conditions of continuous flow. Acute hyperosmotic salt stress can, under some conditions, cause increased rather than decreased GFR, indicating multiple regulatory pathways. Finally, there was no evidence in these studies for glomerular shutdown in response to salt loading.  相似文献

Summary The osmoregulatory effects of intravenously (i.v.) administered angiotensin II (AII) at dose rates of 5, 15 and 45 ng · kg–1 · min–1 were examined in kelp gulls utilizing salt glands and/or kidneys as excretory organs. In birds given i.v. infusion of 1200 mOsmolal NaCl at 0.3 ml · min–1 and utilizing only the salt glands to excrete the load, infusion of AII for 30 min consistently inhibited salt gland function in a dose-dependent manner. In birds given i.v. infusion of 500 mOsmolal NaCl at 0.72 ml · min–1 and utilizing both salt glands and kidneys to excrete the load, each dose of AII given for 2 h inhibited salt gland function but stimulated the kidney, so that the overall outputs of salt and water were enhanced and showed significant (2P<0.01) positive correlations with plasma AII.In birds given i.v. infusion of 200 mOsmolal glucose at 0.5 ml · min–1 and utilizing only the kidneys to excrete the load, low doses of AII (5 and 15 ng · kg–1 · min–1) caused renal salt and water retention, whereas a high dose (45 ng · kg–1 · min–1) stimulated salt and water output. The actions of plasma AII in kelp gulls support the concept that this hormone plays a vital role in avian osmoregulation, having effects on both salt gland and kidney function. Elevation of plasma AII consistently inhibits actively secreting salt glands, but its effects upon renal excretion depend primarily on the osmotic status as well as on the plasma AII concentration. In conditions of salt and volume loading doses of AII stimulate sodium and water excretion. With salt and volume depletion, the action of AII is bi-phasic with low doses promoting renal sodium and water retention but high circulating levels causing natriuresis and diuresis.  相似文献

The nitrogen cycle in lodgepole pine forests, southeastern Wyoming   总被引:7,自引:4,他引:3
Storage and flux of nitrogen were studied in several contrasting lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta spp.latifolia) forests in southeastern Wyoming. The mineral soil contained most of the N in these ecosystems (range of 315–860 g · m–2), with aboveground detritus (37.5–48.8g · m–2) and living biomass (19.5–24.0 g · m–2) storing much smaller amounts. About 60–70% of the total N in vegetation was aboveground, and N concentrations in plant tissues were unusually low (foliage = 0.7% N), as were N input via wet precipitation (0.25 g · m–2 · yr–1), and biological fixation of atmospheric N (<0.03 g · m–2 · yr–1, except locally in some stands at low elevations where symbiotic fixation by the leguminous herbLupinus argenteus probably exceeded 0.1 g · m–2 · yr–1).Because of low concentrations in litterfall and limited opportunity for leaching, N accumulated in decaying leaves for 6–7 yr following leaf fall. This process represented an annual flux of about 0.5g · m–2 to the 01 horizon. Only 20% of this flux was provided by throughfall, with the remaining 0.4g · m–2 · yr–1 apparently added from layers below. Low mineralization and small amounts of N uptake from the 02 are likely because of minimal rooting in the forest floor (as defined herein) and negligible mineral N (< 0.05 mg · L–1) in 02 leachate. A critical transport process was solubilization of organic N, mostly fulvic acids. Most of the organic N from the forest floor was retained within the major tree rooting zone (0–40 cm), and mineralization of soil organic N provided NH4 for tree uptake. Nitrate was at trace levels in soil solutions, and a long lag in nitrification was always observed under disturbed conditions. Total root nitrogen uptake was calculated to be 1.25 gN · m–2 · yr–1 with estimated root turnover of 0.37-gN · m–2 · yr–1, and the soil horizons appeared to be nearly in balance with respect to N. The high demand for mineralized N and the precipitation of fulvic acid in the mineral soil resulted in minimal deep leaching in most stands (< 0.02 g · m–2 · yr–1). These forests provide an extreme example of nitrogen behavior in dry, infertile forests.  相似文献

Summary Sodium or chloride efflux and transepithelial potentials (TEP) were measured in crabs exposed to seawater concentrations ranging from 150 to 25% SW. In crabs acclimated to 150% SW the Na+ efflux (3.8 mmol/h·100 g) was significantly higher than the Cl efflux (2.1 mmol/h·100 g), but both fluxes decreased to about 0.6 mmol/h·100 g in crabs from 50 or 25% SW. The TEP varied linearly from –1 mV (blood negative) in 150% SW, to –11 mV in 25% SW. In 150 and 100% SW the calculated components of the ion fluxes (i.e., diffusive, urinary, active uptake or extrusion) added up to less than one-half of the isotopically measured values. In 50 and 25% SW the measured effluxes were fully accounted for by their calculated components. In crabs transferred from 150% SW to low-Na 150% SW (=TRIS ASW), the Na+ efflux decreased abruptly, from 3.7 to 0.6 mmol/h; the Cl efflux decreased much less, from 1.9 to 1.5 mmol/h. A large fraction of the Na+ (or Cl) fluxes in crabs from concentrated SW meets the criteria for exchange diffusion, which decreases or disappears as the external concentration of each ion is lowered. This suggests that changes of the permeability to ions, in response to alterations of environmental salinity, may not constitute an important adaptive strategy in this species.Abbreviations SW seawater - TEP transepithelial potential - TRIS ASW artificial seawater 150%  相似文献

Summary Ion flux relations in the unicellular marine algaAcetabularia have been investigated by uptake and washout kinetics of radioactive tracers (22Na+,42K+,36Cl and86Rb+) in normal cells and in cell segments with altered compartmentation (depleted of vacuole or of cytoplasm). Some flux experiments were supplemented by simultaneous electrophysiological recordings. The main results and conclusions about the steady-state relations are: the plasmalemma is the dominating barrier for translocation of K+ with influx and efflux of about 100 nmol·m–2·sec–1×K+ passes three- to sevenfold more easily than Rb+ does. Under normal conditions, Cl (the substrate of the electrogenic pump, which dominates the electrical properties of the plasmalemma in the resting state) shows two efflux components of about 17 and 2 mol·m–2·sec–1, and a cytoplasmic as well as vacuolar [Cl] of about 420mm ([Cl] o =529mm). At 4°C, when the pump is inhibited, both influx and efflux, as well as the cellular [Cl], are significantly reduced. Na+ ([Na+] i : about 70mm, [Na+] o : 461mm), which is of minor electrophysiological relevance compared to K+, exhibits rapid and virtually temperature-insensitive (electroneutral) exchange (two components with about 2 and 0.2 mol·m–2·sec–1 for influx and efflux). Some results with Na+ and Cl are inconsistent with conventional (noncyclic) compartmentation models: (i) equilibration of the vacuole (with the external medium) can be faster than equilibration of the cytoplasm, (ii) absurd concentration values result when calculated by conventional compartmental analysis, and (iii) large amounts of ions can be released from the cell without changes in the electrical potential of the cytoplasm. These observations can be explained by the particular compartmentation of normalAcetabularia cells (as known by electron micrographs) with about 1 part cytoplasm, 5 parts central vacuole, and 5 parts vacuolar vesicles. These vesicles communicate directly with the central vacuole, with the cytoplasm and with the external medium.  相似文献

The Na level inside cells of Anacystis nidulans is lower than in the external medium reflecting an effective Na extrusion. Na efflux is an active process and is driven by a Na+/H+-antiport system. The necessary H+-gradient is generated by a proton translocating ATPase in the plasmalemma. This ATPase (electrogenic proton pump) also produces the membrane potential (about -110 mV) responsible for K accumulation. N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) inhibits the ATPase and the H+-gradient completely, but the membrane potential is only reduced (<-70 mV), since K efflux initiated by DCCD maintains the potential partly by diffusion potential. With DCCD, active Na efflux is inhibited thus revealing Na uptake and leading by equilibration to the membrane potential to a 5–20 fold accumulation. Na uptake depends on the DCCD concentration with an optimum at (1–2)×10-4 M DCCD. Pretreatment with DCCD for a few minutes followed by replacement of the medium suffices to induce Na uptake.DCCD induced Na influx is about 5 times faster in light than in darkness, and the steady state is reached much earlier in light; a 5 fold increase by light was also found for Rb uptake with untreated cells. Valinomycin stimulates the influx of Rb to about the same rate in light and dark. Therefore light may unspecifically increase the permeability of the plasma-lemma probably via the ATP level. Similarly to DCCD also 3×10-3 M N-ethylmaleimide induces Na uptake.Abbreviations Used DCCD N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide - NEM N-ethylmaleimide - CCCP carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone - Pipes piperazine-N,N-bis(2-ethanesulfonic acid) - DCMU 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea  相似文献

Summary Previous work showed that amiloride partially inhibits the net gain of Na in cold-stored red cells of guinea pig and that the proportion of unidirectional Na influx sensitive to amiloride increases dramatically with cooling. This study shows that at 37°C amiloride-sensitive (AS) Na influx in guinea pig red blood cells is activated by cytoplasmic H+, hypertonic incubation, phorbol ester in the presence of extracellular Cat2+ and is correlated with cation-dependent H+ loss from acidified cells. Cytoplasmic acidification increases AS Na efflux into Na-free medium. These properties are consistent with the presence of a Na-H exchanger with a H+ regulatory site. Elevation of cytoplasmic free Mg2– above 3 mm greatly increases AS Na influx: this correlates with a Na-dependent loss of Mg2–, indicating the presence of a Na-Mg exchanger. At 20°C activators of Na-H exchange have little or no further stimulatory effect on the already elevated AS Na influx. AS Na influx is much larger than either Na-dependent H+ loss or AS Na efflux at 20°C. The affinity of the AS Na influx for cytoplasmic H+ is greater at 20°C than at 37°C. Depletion of cytoplasmic Mg2+ does not abolish the high AS Na influx at 20°C.Thus, elevation of AS Na influx with cooling appears to be due to increased activity of a Na-H exchanger (operating in a slippage mode) caused by greater sensitivity to H+ at a regulatory site.  相似文献

A rich and varied meiofauna inhabits a Cornish mudflat near the mouth of the Tamar River in southwestern England. Population densities range from 117 to 943 individuals · g–1 (wet) sediment (1.4–11.4 × 106 individuals · m–2), with foraminifera, harpacticoid copepods and nematodes appearing in nearly equal numbers and comprising most of the meiofauna. Seasonally, meiofaunal numbers rise and fall with solar radiation and vary inversely with river discharge. Two species, the atestate allogromiid A and the calcareous Haynesina germanica (Ehrenberg), far outnumber other foraminifera; their population densities and growth rates reach maxima in spring and summer.Monthly rates of sediment respiration are locally variable, but clearly increase from winter (4.13 ml O2 · m–2 · h–1 in December) to spring (38.87 ml O2 · m–2 · h–1 in April). Experiments and calculations ascribe approximately 30% of this total to the meiofauna (including microfauna and microflora), 50% to bacteria and less than 20% to chemical oxidation. A tentative energy budget for the mudflat suggests that secondary production by meiofauna is small as compared with coastal environments elsewhere, and that meiofaunal production (426 Kcal · m–2 · y–1) is nearly twice meiofaunal respiration (252 Kcal · m–2 · yr–1).  相似文献

Summary Pekin ducks were adapted to permanent osmotic stress by rearing them on a NaCl solution of increasing concentration up to 2% as drinking water. Their salt and water balance was compared with that of non-adapted ducks maintained on tap water. Amounts and osmolalities of salt gland secretion and cloacal discharges, plasma osmolality and electrolytes were measured during stepwise osmotic loading by intravenous infusion of NaCl solution of about 740 mosm·kg–1, at rates of 0.25, 0.45 and 0.65 ml·min–1. Before loading, the plasma osmolality of the adapted ducks was about 22 mosm·kg–1 higher than in non-adapted animals. The initial step of loading induced salt gland secretion in the adapted ducks after an average rise of plasma osmolality of 3.6 mosm·kg–1 and in the non-adapted animals after a rise of 7.8 mosm·kg–1. The method of osmotic loading enabled both groups of animals to balance their water input and output. However, only the adapted ducks were able to balance NaCl input and output, predominantly by salt gland secretion, thus maintaining a stable plasma osmolality. The nonadapted ducks retained 42% of the salt load which resulted in a rise of plasma osmolality of 49 mosm·kg–1, more salt being excreted by the kidneys than by the salt glands. In the salt-adapted ducks, salt gland activity, plasma osmolality and Na+ concentration did not correlate during balanced states of salt input and output. The involvement of tonicity receptors in salt gland control was confirmed by the stimulating effects of various hypertonic solutions. On the other hand, continuous loading by a constant infusion of NaCl solution of 1,300 mosm·kg–1 induced a steady salt gland secretion at a rising plasma osmolality and thus suggested that a volume factor is involved in salt gland control. Inhibition of salt gland activity by withdrawing blood and activation by blood infusion confirmed this assumption. While a direct cause and effect relationship between volume changes and salt gland secretion cannot be demonstrated, the results indicate that volume changes in one or more extracellular compartments do affect salt gland secretion.Supported by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Si 320/2)  相似文献

Synopsis Seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory ability were compared in landlocked and anadromous strains of Arctic charr and Atlantic salmon. Seawater adaptability was assessed using periodic 48 h seawater challenge tests with 25. seawater. The landlocked strains of Arctic charr, two from northern Sweden and one from Southern Norway, displayed similar seasonal changes in seawater adaptability as the anadromous strain. Seawater tolerance increased during spring and remained high until the end of July — early August after which it declined. The two strains of Atlantic salmon displayed different seasonal patterns in hypoosmoregulatory ability. The anadromous strain showed a pronounced seasonal pattern with maximal seawater adaptability in early June. In contrast, seawater tolerance in the landlocked strain improved steadily during spring and remained high until late autumn. During the period of enhanced seawater tolerance, hypoosmoregulatory ability increased significantly with body size in both Arctic charr and anadromous Atlantic salmon. The minimum size at which fish were able to regulate plasma sodium following seawater transfer at a level comparable to freshwater levels (<170 mmol I–1) differed significantly between anadromous Atlantic salmon (ca. 14 cm) and Arctic charr (ca. 22 cm). The results show that seasonal changes in hypoosmoregulatory ability are present in both Atlantic salmon and Arctic charr, and that these physiological traits are retained in the corresponding landlocked strains. However, the seasonal pattern of seawater adaptability as well as the minimum size at which seawater tolerance occurs differs between the two species.  相似文献

Cells of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, derived from vanadium free agar slants, respond with great sensitivity to microamounts of vanadium, added as NH4VO3 to autotrophic liquid cultures. Between 0.01 and 1 g V per litre nutrient medium (2·10-10-2·10-8g-at/l), the algae respond with a continuous increase in dry weight. At higher V-concentrations, further enhancement in biomass is accompanied by a additional increase in chlorophyll content. Maximum V-effect on both parameters was found to be at 500g V/l (10-5 g-at/l). Dry weight as well as chlorophyll content of Chlorella are decreased by concentrations above 25 mg V/l; 100 mg V/l (2·10-3 g-at/l) stop growth and cause death of the cells. The toxic threshold for the V-content in the algae was determined to be at 150–200 g V/g (3–4·10-6 g-at/g) dry weight. Two different pH-optima for a positive vanadium action on dry weight and chlorophyll biosynthesis were established, the first at pH 7, the other in the range pH 7.5–8. Two sites of vanadium action in green algae are discussed.Part I: Arch. Microbiol. 105, 77–82 (1975)  相似文献

Tryptamine levels have been determined in mouse brain regions and spinal cord and in rat spinal cord. They were; caudate nucleus 2.5 ng·g–1, hypothalamus <0.5 ng·g–1, hippocampus <0.7 ng·g–1, olfactory bulb <0.7 ng·g–1, olfactory tubercles <0.6 ng·g–1, brain stem <0.4 ng·g–1, cerebellum <1.0 ng·g–1, and the rest 0.9 ng·g–1. The mouse whole brain was found to have 0.5 ng·g–1, the mouse spinal cord 0.3 ng·g–1, and the rat spinal cord 0.3 ng·g–1. These concentrations increased rapidly to 22.8 ng·g–1, 14.2 ng·g–1, and 6.6 ng·g–1 respectively at 1 hr after 200 mg·kg–1 pargyline. The turnover rates and half lives of tryptamine in the mouse brain and spinal cord and rat spinal cord were estimated to be 0.14 nmol·g–1·h–1 and 0.9 min; 0.054 nmol·g–1·h–1 and 1.5 min and 0.04 nmol·g–1·h–1 and 1.6 min respectively. The aromaticl-aminoacid decarboxylase inhibitors NSD 1034 and NSD 1055 reduced synthesis of tryptamine in controls and pargyline pretreated animals. Tryptophan increased the concentrations of mouse striatal tryptamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine and brain stem 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid.p-Chlorophenylalanine reduced formation of 5-hydroxytryptamine and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid but did not change that of tryptamine.  相似文献

Summary The intestinal caeca reabsorb urinary sodium chloride (NaCl) and water (Rice and Skadhauge 1982). Free water may be generated if the reabsorbed NaCl is secreted via salt gland secretion (Schmidt-Nielsen et al. 1958). Therefore ceacal ligation should (a) reduce hingut NaCl and water reabsorption, (b) enhance the increase in plasma osmolality during saline acclimation, and (c) affect drakes more than ducks. Twelve Pekin drakes and 13 Pekin ducks, Anas platyrhynchos, were caecally ligated or sham operated before acclimation to 450 mmol · 1 NaCl. Body mass, hematocrit, plasma osmolality, and inonic concentrations of plasma, cloacal fluid, and salt gland secretion were measured after each increase in drinking water salinity. Osmoregulatory organ masses were determined. Caecal ligation did not effect plasma osmolality or ion concentrations of plasma, cloacal fluid, or salt gland secretion, but reduced salt gland size in ducks. Drakes and ducks drinking fresh water had the same hematocrit, plasma osmolality, and plasma concentrations of Na+ and Cl. In both sexes exposure to 75 mmol · 1-1 NaCl significantly decreased plasma [Na+] and doubled cloacal fluid [Na+]. Exposure to 450 mmol · 1-1 NaCl decreased body mass and increased hematocrit, plasma [Na+], [Cl], and plasma osmolality (more in drakes than in ducks); cloacal fluid osmolality nearly doubled compared to freshwater-adapted ducks, due mainly to osmolytes other than Na+ and Cl. The [Cl] in salt gland secretion only slightly exceeded drinking water [Cl].Abbreviations AVT antiduretic hormone - CF cloacal fluid - ECFV extraoellular fluid volume - FW freshwater acclimated - Hct hematocrit - MDWE mean daily water flux - [Na +]cf cloacal fluid sodium concentration - [Na +]pl plasma sodium concentration - Osm cf cloacal fluid osmolality - Osm pl plasma osmolality - SGS salt gland secretion - TBW total body water  相似文献

An integrated programme of pheromone-mediated mating disruption using Isomate-C®, post-harvest removal of fruit, and trapping overwintering larvae with cardboard tree bands, was used to control codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in four commercial organic apple orchards in Cawston, British Columbia during 1989–1992. One application of 1000 dispensers – 1 on May 1 delivered estimated seasonal totals of 16.6, 16.5 and 19.9 g of E,E-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol [=codlemone] – 1in 1990, 1991 and 1992, respectively, at median rates of 8.4, 8.3, and 13.3 mg · < ha–1 · ha–1 during dusk flight periods of first brood and 5.3, 4.7 and 4.6 mg · – 1· ha–1 in second brood, respectively. Over this 3-year period damage from codling moth at harvest ranged from 0.08 to 2.4%, and averaged 60.7% in these four organic orchards, while damage in five conventional orchards receiving sprays of azinphosmethyl ranged from 0.02 to 1.85%, and averaged 0.5%. Damage in an experimental orchard that was banded only, ranged from 43.5 to 56.7%, and averaged 48.9%. Between 1990 and 1992 cumulative male catches in Pherocon 1-CP wing traps baited with 10 mg of codlemone declined by 52% and densities of overwintering codling moth larvae declined an average of 49.5% in all organic orchards. Overwintering populations in the banded experimental orchard showed an increase of 57.7% during this study period. We conclude that an integrated programme of pheromone-mediated mating disruption, post-harvest fruit removal and tree banding, controls codling moth effectively enough to make organic apple production viable in British Columbia.  相似文献
