The cutaneous microbiology of normal human feet   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A survey has been made of the bacterial and fungal populations carried at three different sites on the feet of 60 individuals. The bacteria found at the three sites were quantitatively similar and Micrococcaceae and aerobic coryneform bacteria predominated. The carriage of other bacterial groups was generally low. There was a quantitative variation between sites--mean total counts were 1.04 X 10(7) cfu/cm2 skin in the fourth toe cleft, 4.08 X 10(5) cfu/cm2 skin on the sole and 1.21 X 10(3) cfu/cm2 skin on the dorsal surface. Staphylococci were most often dominant on the sole and dorsal surface whereas aerobic coryneforms predominated in the majority of fourth toe clefts. The higher the total count at a given site the more likely it was that aerobic coryneform bacteria predominated. The skin surface pH was significantly higher on the sole (mean value 6.25) than on the dorsal surface (mean value 5.23). Factors controlling the microbial ecology of the foot are discussed.  相似文献

S ummary . Three hundred and forty eight strains of micro-organisms were isolated from packaged bacon which had been cured by one or other of 2 methods (A and B) and stored at 0–10° for 7 weeks. Before storage, Micrococcus sub-group 7 (47%) and coryneform bacteria (33%) were the principal contaminants of bacon cured by method A and Micrococcus subgroup 1 (20%) and Microbacterium thermosphactum (21%), in bacon cured by method B. After 7 days at 0°, coagulase negative staphylococci accounted for 10 and 33% of the microflora in bacon A and B, respectively: other organisms were micrococci, 60% (A) and 25% (B); corynebacteria, 20% (A) and 12·5% (B), yeasts ( Torulopsis candida and T. dattila ) 5% (A) and 29% (B). In the following month at 10°, Micrococcus sub-group 5 was the dominant (43–88%) contaminant of bacon B; the incidence of Streptococcus Group N ranged from 27–36% and that of unidentified lactic acid bacteria from 23–32%. Towards the end of storage, the order of dominance was Micrococcus sub-group 3 (38–58%) and atypical streptobacteria (38%) in A; Streptococcus Group N (42%) and Gram positive rods (5–20%) in B. Staphylococci tended to die out during storage of bacons cured by the 2 methods and coagulase positive staphylococci were not isolated.  相似文献

The standard diagnostic test for differentiating staphylococci from micrococci is based on the ability of the former to produce acid anaerobically in a glucose-containing growth medium. This test has been modified to provide greater convenience, easier interpretation of results, and better correlation with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) base composition. In the modified test, shake cultures in Brewer's fluid thioglycolate medium with 0.3% agar added are observed for growth in the anaerobic zone of the tubes. This test was applied to 125 strains of staphylococci and micrococci, and all except two strains gave results that were consistent with other criteria. Of particular interest were eight strains of Micrococcus saprophyticus and three strains of M. lactis that have a DNA composition of 30 to 37% guanine plus cytosine (GC). All 11 of these cultures produced anaerobic growth and thus would be classified as staphylococci. Strains of M. lactis that have a high GC content in their DNA grew only aerobically. Some cultures of staphylococci produced characteristic band patterns of anaerobic growth and other cultures produced only a few anaerobic colonies from an inoculum of 10(6) to 10(7) cells. These observations suggest some interesting genetic and metabolic capabilities in such cultures.  相似文献

A cover-glass placed on a heavily inoculated culture plate clearly differentiates facultatively anaerobic staphylococci growing underneath the cover-glass after overnight incubation from nongrowing aerobic micrococci. Even if there are some exceptions, all medically significant staphylococci can grow in the test. Thus, the test provides a cost-effective and highly specific tool for separation of both genera which fundamentally differ in their pathogenicity.  相似文献

The electrophoretic separation of the proteinases produced by staphylococci and micrococci was studied in four buffers. The duration of electrophoresis was based on the migration of a marker dye for a predetermined distance. The migration distances of the enzymes and dye were measured, and enzyme-dye values were calculated. A comparison of enzyme-dye values showed that complete separation of eight serologically different proteinases did not occur in any one buffer; however, in most instances, their relative order of migration was the same in all buffers. Certain strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis produced two proteinases that were different serologically as well as electrophoretically. Staphylococcus aureus strains, on the other hand, produced up to four proteinases that were serologically the same. The proteinases of staphylococci and micrococci can be best characterized by both electrophoretic and serological methods.  相似文献

In a wind‐tunnel study, the upwind flight and source location of female Aedes aegypti to plumes of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and odour from human feet is tested. Both odour sources are presented singly and in combination. Flight upwind along the plumes is evident for both CO2 and odour from human feet when the odours are presented alone. Similarly, both odour sources are located by more than 70% of mosquitoes in less than 3 min. When both CO2 and odour from human feet are presented simultaneously in two different choice tests (with plumes superimposed or with plumes separated), there is no evidence that females orientate along the plume of CO2 and only a few mosquitoes locate its source. Rather, the foot odour plume is navigated and the source of foot odour is located by over 80% of female Ae. aegypti. When a female is presented a plume of CO2 within a broad plume of human foot odour of relatively low concentration, the source of CO2 is not located; instead, flight is upwind in the diffuse plume of foot odour. Although upwind flight by Ae. aegypti at long range is presumably induced by CO2 and the threshold of response to skin odours is lowered, our findings suggest that, once females have arrived near a prospective human host, upwind orientation and landing are largely governed by the suite of human odours, whereas orientation is no longer influenced by CO2.  相似文献

Staphylococcus and Micrococcus populations were collected from the healthy skin of 10 infant subjects. Infants were sampled from 1 day to 32 weeks of age. Species were characterized by approximately 30 different morphological, physiological, and biochemical characters. Staphylococci were the predominant inhabitants of normal skin, whereas micrococci were found only occasionally in this environment. Staphylococcus epidermidid, S. haemolyticus, and S. hominis were the predominant and persistent staphylococci. These species constituted a high percentage of the total aerobic bacterial flora of infant skin. Micrococcus luteus and M. kristinae were the prevalent micrococci found on infant skin. Only limited correlation between Staphyloccus and Micrococcus populations and infant age or body area sampled was indicated by this study.  相似文献

As shown in this investigation, the population characteristics of micrococci inhabiting the skin of the mammary glands make it possible to regard these microorganisms as the permanent members of microbiocenosis. Their proportion among all isolated strains was, respectively, 27.2% and 27.7% for nulliparous and pregnant women and their occurrence, 96.7% and 92.1%. The largest population of micrococci was registered at the nipple area of both left (934-1,956 colony-forming units per sq. cm) and right (1,092-2,134 colony-forming units per sq. cm) breasts. A decrease in the number of micrococci was observed at the above-mentioned areas during pregnancy, which was accompanied by changes in the specific and antagonistic profiles of the association. This occurred supposedly under the necessity of preserving its dynamic stability.  相似文献

This study investigated the interaction between carbon dioxide (CO(2) ) and human foot odour on activation, upwind orientation and landing of host-seeking female Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) (Diptera: Culicidae) in a wind tunnel. More mosquitoes landed on warmed glass beads coated with foot odour than on clean beads; adding a plume of 4% CO(2) did not influence the proportion of mosquitoes landing. A second experiment used 3-dimensional video tracking to assess flight performance. Activation was more rapid with CO(2) and with CO(2) + foot odour than with clean air or with foot odour alone. Upwind flights were fastest with CO(2) and with clean air, and slowest with foot odour; the CO(2) + foot odour treatment overlapped the previous three treatments in significance. Flight headings tended more towards due upwind with CO(2) and with clean air than with CO(2) + foot odour or with foot odour alone. In both experiments, many mosquitoes flew upwind in clean air. There was little evidence of females changing course upon entering or exiting the CO(2) plume or reacting to foot odour during flight.  相似文献

The major groups of micro-organisms on cured woolskins have been correlated with specific curing treatments. No treatment eliminated Bacillus spp. or halophilic bacteria. Of the treatments which eliminated fungi, coliforms and micrococci, biocides and fungicides were significant. Differences were found in microbial population distribution between wool and skin. The minimum curing treatment was salt and naphthalene. The most effective was salt and naphthalene and Benlate. An alternative treatment is salt and sodium fluoride and Busan 30.  相似文献

The numbers of viable bacteria in built up poultry litter were found to be 1010-1011/g fresh weight and appeared to be little affected by factors such as age, temperature, moisture content and pH. Counts for unused litter and poultry droppings were lower. In built up litter of high alkalinity coryneform bacteria were predominant; micrococci occurred sporadically and small numbers of nocardias, streptomycetes, aerobic spore formers and streptococci were encountered. A variety of Gram negative bacteria also occurred, the numbers of which appeared to be controlled by alkalinity; they were less abundant in litters where the pH and buffering capacity were high. Strongly alkaline conditions also tended to lower the fungal counts but had no effect on the count of enterococci.  相似文献

Nasal colonization with antibiotic resistant bacteria represents both a risk factor for the colonized individual and their immediate contacts. Despite the fact that healthcare workers such as orthopedic surgeons are at a critical interface between the healthcare environment and an at-risk patient population, the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria within the surgical profession remains unclear. This study offers a snapshot of the rate of nasal colonization of orthopedic surgeons with multi-resistant staphylococci including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS). We performed a prospective, observational study obtained at a single time point in late 2013. The participants were active orthopedic, spine and head & neck surgeons from 75 countries. The prevalence of nasal carriage of the different bacteria and the corresponding 95% confidence interval were calculated. From a cohort of 1,166 surgeons, we found an average S. aureus nasal colonization rate of 28.0% (CI 25.4;30.6) and MRSA rate of 2.0% (CI 1.3;2.9), although significant regional variations were observed. The highest rates of MRSA colonization were found in Asia (6.1%), Africa (5.1%) and Central America (4.8%). There was no MRSA carriage detected within our population of 79 surgeons working in North America, and a low (0.6%) MRSA rate in 657 surgeons working in Europe. High rates of MRCoNS nasal carriage were also observed (21.4% overall), with a similar geographic distribution. Recent use of systemic antibiotics was associated with higher rates of carriage of resistant staphylococci. In conclusion, orthopedic surgeons are colonized by S. aureus and MRSA at broadly equivalent rates to the general population. Crucially, geographic differences were observed, which may be partially accounted for by varying antimicrobial stewardship practices between the regions. The elevated rates of resistance within the coagulase-negative staphylococci are of concern, due to the increasing awareness of their importance in hospital acquired and device-associated infection.  相似文献

Growth Inhibition of Staphylococci by Sodium Thiosulphate   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
The addition of sodium thiosulphate to a medium as neutralizer of an iodine antiseptic resulted in unexpected growth inhibition of various strains of staphylococci and micrococci. The minimum growth inhibiting concentration varied with different strains. The inhibitory effect of sodium thiosulphate was more pronounced in media with low pH values than in those with high pH values, and was diminished by the addition of Tween 80. The action was also found to depend on the concentration of l -cystine in the medium. It is suggested that the use of sodium thiosulphate be avoided in growth media designed to neutralize iodine in disinfection efficiency tests when staphylococci or micrococci are used as test organisms.  相似文献

Twenty-four strains of gram-positive facultative cocci, arranged primarily in small clusters, were isolated from the surface of the human tongue. With the exception of 14 catalase-negative isolates, these strains were identical in cultural and biochemical characteristics and in deoxyribonucleic acid base composition. All cultures produced viscous growth in both liquid and agar media. They fermented glucose anaerobically, reduced nitrate beyond nitrite, were benzidine-positive, and failed to grow in the presence of 5% NaCl or at 45 C. In addition, they exhibited guanine plus cytosine (G + C) contents of 55.4 to 58.3%. These isolates differed from strains of pediococci, aerococci, and micrococci which were included for comparison. On the basis of G + C content, these organisms appear to be intermediate between micrococci and staphylococci; however, on the basis of anaerobic glucose fermentation, it is suggested that they be placed in the genus Staphylococcus. It is proposed that they be recognized as S. salivarius.  相似文献

Sensitivity to selected chemotherapeutics of various bacterial strains was analysed. Bacteria were isolated from the different material collected from patients within 1987-1988, and included: 690 strains of staphylococci, 465 strains of streptococci, 1224 strains of aerobic gram-negative bacilli, and 163 strains of anaerobic micro-organisms. Out of isolated staphylococci, the highest percentage was sensitive to vancomycin, pristinamycin, and fusidic acid. Vancomycin proved the most effective against streptococci followed by chloramphenicol and netilmicin . However, streptococci were highly sensitive to vancomycin within two years whereas their sensitivity to chloramphenicol and netilmicin .  相似文献
