Mean length and mean weight at age of Atlantic mackerel in the North Sea increased significantly between 1960 and 1979, then, decreased markedly during the 1980s. In contrast, median age at maturity decreased (c. 1-1.5 years) from 1960. Median length at maturity remained stable until the 1980s, when it declined sharply. The significance of these changes is discussed in relation to variation in sea temperature, food availability and stock size. It is speculated that the changes during the 1980s resulted from immigration of western stock mackerel.  相似文献

The total mean sample heterozygosity calculated from eight polymorphic loci was 0·172 (0·047 S.E.) (Fst 0·025) for school mackerel Scomberomorus queenslandicus , and for spotted mackerel S. munroi was 0·110 (0·074 S.E.) (Fst 0·038). There was no evidence of temporal variation for either species as significant genetic differences were not detected between months or year classes within areas. Spatially, school mackerel have a complex stock structure, with stocks being associated with large embayments. In contrast, spotted mackerel appear to comprise a single stock in Australian east coast waters. Both species showed a significant pattern of stock structure between Australian east coast and northern (Arafura Sea) samples.  相似文献

We present a unique view of mackerel (Scomber scombrus) in the North Sea based on a new time series of larvae caught by the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey from 1948-2005, covering the period both before and after the collapse of the North Sea stock. Hydrographic backtrack modelling suggested that the effect of advection is very limited between spawning and larvae capture in the CPR survey. Using a statistical technique not previously applied to CPR data, we then generated a larval index that accounts for both catchability as well as spatial and temporal autocorrelation. The resulting time series documents the significant decrease of spawning from before 1970 to recent depleted levels. Spatial distributions of the larvae, and thus the spawning area, showed a shift from early to recent decades, suggesting that the central North Sea is no longer as important as the areas further west and south. These results provide a consistent and unique perspective on the dynamics of mackerel in this region and can potentially resolve many of the unresolved questions about this stock.  相似文献

Population genetic structures of the mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were studied in the Mediterranean Sea. Fragments of 272 bp (S. scomber) and 387 bp (S. japonicus) of the 5'-end of the mitochondrial control region were sequenced from spawning individuals collected off the coasts of Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. High levels of mitochondrial control region haplotypic diversity (> 0.98) were found for both Scomber species. Nucleotide diversity was higher in the mackerel (0.022) than in the chub mackerel (0.017). Global F(ST) values were also higher and significant in the mackerel (0.024, P < 0.0001) as opposed to the chub mackerel (0.003, P > 0.05). Molecular variance analyses showed differential genetic structuring for these two closely related species. There is extensive gene flow between Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean populations of chub mackerel, which are organized into a larger panmictic unit. In contrast, Mediterranean Sea populations of mackerel show some degree of genetic differentiation and are structured along an east-west axis. The analysed eastern Mediterranean Sea mackerel populations (Greece, Italy) are clearly separated from that of the western Mediterranean Sea (Barcelona), which forms a panmictic unit with eastern Atlantic Ocean populations. The genetic structures of both species showed asymmetric migration patterns and indicated population expansion.  相似文献

Changes in prevalence of the plerocerci of Grillotia angeli Dollfus, 1969 in mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., and of Lacistorhynchus sp. in herring, Clupea harengus L., were recorded over periods of eight years (1978–1985) and 11 years (1974–1984), respectively. Data were collected from 21 year classes of mackerel in an area to the south-west of Britain and Ireland and from seven year classes of herring in the eastern North Sea. Both sets of data showed sharp decreases in parasite prevalence from periods at relatively high levels to others at much lower levels. The changes in prevalence occurred at the same time in both host-parasite systems and coincided with the end of the hydrographic phenomenon known as the mid-70s salinity anomaly. Possible explanations for the changes which are discussed include changes in abundance of first intermediate and definitive hosts, variations in host year class strength, changes in hydrographic conditions and changes in host diet.  相似文献

During the 1980s and 1990s wild-caught cod displaying visceral granulomatosis were sporadically identified from the southern North Sea. Presumptive diagnoses at the time included mycobacterial infection, although mycobacteria were never cultivated or observed histologically from these fish. Farmed cod in Norway displaying gross pathology similar to that identified previously in cod from the southern North Sea were recently discovered to be infected with the bacterium Francisella noatunensis subsp, noatunensis. Archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from the original North Sea cases were investigated for the presence of Mycobacterium spp. and Francisella spp. using real-time polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry. Whilst no evidence of mycobacterial infection was found, F. noatunensis subsp. noatunensis was identified in association with pathological changes consistent with Francisella infections described from farmed cod in recent years. This study shows that francisellosis occurred in wild-caught cod in the southern North Sea in the 1980s and 1990s and demonstrates that this disease predates intensive aquaculture of cod.  相似文献

We evaluate the hypothesis that Atlantic cod larvae are passively transported by sea currents from off-shore spawning areas to settle in coastal waters, a hypothesis which has recently gained support from genetic analysis of cod in the North Sea-Skagerrak area. Such larval transport has been suggested to be an important mechanism behind the commonly observed low spatial genetic differentiation in many marine organisms. Here, we apply an ARMAX(2,2) model for juvenile abundance and use long-term monitoring data from the Skagerrak coast, constituting 54 continuous annual series from 1945 to 1997. Analysing the model, we find that the product of the size of the North Sea breeding stock and the strength of the net inflow of North Sea waters had a significant, positive effect on the abundance of coastal juvenile cod. The peak effect occurs during the month of March, just after spawning, when eggs and larvae remain pelagic and sensitive to currents. In contrast, we find no evidence of any direct effect of the North Sea spawning stock alone. Our analyses indicate that 15-20,000 0-group larvae from the North Sea reach each fjord per year, on average. This corresponds to about 1-10% of the total 0-group population in each fjord on average. These findings clearly demonstrate a direct link between larval drift and gene flow in the marine environment.  相似文献

The parasite fauna of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson from three regions off eastern Australia was examined for evidence of separate stocks. The abundance of five metacestodes was very similar in all areas suggesting that extensive mixing of the fish occurs along the coast, unlike the situation across northern Australia where large differences have been found between regions. The similarity in abundances of two metacestodes from Townsville fish and south‐east Queensland fish suggests that these two regions have fish with very similar histories. The data lead to the conclusion that the seasonal fishery for Spanish mackerel off south‐east Queensland is based on a random group of fish from the same origin as fish sampled off Townsville and is not a subpopulation that moves south each year.  相似文献

Blue whale calls in the eastern North Pacific Ocean consist of a two-part call often termed the A-B call. This call has been described for regions offshore of Oregon, Washington, and California, USA and the Sea of Cortez, Mexico (reviewed in Rivers 1997). Data collected from moored hydrophones in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) indicate that the A-B pattern is common in this region as well. There is consistency in this call type throughout the eastern North Pacific and throughout the year. This acoustic evidence indicates continuity between blue whales in the ETP and those found west of North America. The acoustic data suggest that the population of blue whales generally referred to as the “Californi/Mexico” stock might better be termed the “northeast Pacific” stock of blue whales.  相似文献

Changes during the last 40 years of abundance and occurrence of harbour porpoises in the North Sea are illustrated as consequences of changes in environmental factors. The major changes in environmental conditions which influenced the presence of harbour porpoises in the North Sea, in particular the southern North sea, are postulated to be changes in prey availability and changes in accidental catches. Limitations of prey made them move out of the coastal areas, but accidental catch has reduced their overall abundance. Prey availability was affected by limitation of herring and mackerel as the major food source, caused initially by overfishing, followed by a shift in spawning and feeding areas towards the North. Without ignoring the possible complementary impact of pollution and disturbance, it is believed that accidental catch is the only other major threat. The present size of the harbour porpoise population(s) in the northeast Atlantic, including the stock in the Danish inner waters, is estimated to average 160,000 (range 70,000–225,000) specimens. However, this should not divert the attention from the fact that bycatch and directed catch have significantly reduced the size of the North Sea harbour porpoise populations (including the Baltic), by at least between 53,000–89,000 animals, and more likely the higher end of the range. It is emphasized that management measures should be taken in order to reduce the bycatch of porpoises as was already agreed at the latest Ministerial North Sea Conference. The only short-term, pragmatic and efficient way to assess whether the population will benefit from increasing prey availability is to organise international sighting surveys. Then it may be possible to obtain a clear perception of whether the porpoise has only temporarily moved out of the southern North Sea or whether we are dealing with a decreased population, unable to recover because it can not sustain the existing accidental catches.  相似文献

The plight of the marine fisheries is attracting increasing attention as unsustainably high exploitation levels, exacerbated by more extreme climatic conditions, are driving stocks to the point of collapse. The North Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), a species which until recently formed a major component of the demersal fisheries, has undergone significant declines across its range. The North Sea stock is typical of many, with a spawning stock biomass that has remained below the safe biological limit since 2000 and recruitment levels near the lowest on record. Cod within the North Sea are currently managed as a single stock, and yet mounting empirical evidence supports the existence of a metapopulation of regionally variable, genetically distinct, sub-stocks. Applying the same management strategies to multiple stocks that differ in their resilience to exploitation inevitably results in the overfishing and likely collapse of the weaker components. Indeed, recent studies have identified two North Sea spawning stocks that have undergone disproportionally large collapses with very substantial reductions in egg production. Similarly affected cod stocks in the northwest Atlantic have shown little evidence of recovery, despite fishery closures. The possible implications of ignoring sub-structuring within management units for biocomplexity, local adaptation and ecosystem stability are considered.  相似文献

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)Mackerel Working Group recognises two mackerel stocks in Europeanwaters, the North Sea stock and the Western stock. From Marchto July 1977 an Anglo-French plankton survey was carried outin the shelf waters of the Bay of Biscay, Celtic Sea and westof Ireland to estimate the size of the Western stock. Sampleswere collected with a 76 cm Lowestoft pattern high-speed planktonsampler fished to a maximum depth of 100 m. The number of eggsm–2 at each of five development stages were raised todaily production estimates with development rate coefficientsmeasured with live material collected in March. The mean numberof stage I eggs m–2 d–1 was raised to a total dailyproduction estimate for each month by the area within the minimumcontour level, and a production curve was drawn for the spawningseason. The total egg production was estimated at 1.98 x 1015eggs, + 30%, – 20%. With a mean fecundity of 361 000 anda sex ratio of 0.64 males per female this is equivalent to 8995 million fish.  相似文献

Over the past 3 decades, North Sea Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) have exhibited variable length‐at‐age along with declines in spawning stock biomass and timing of maturity. Multiple factors affecting growth and development in fish acted on this economically important stock over the same period including warming waters and an intensive fishery. Here, we employ North Sea cod as a model population, exploring how a physiologically relevant temperature metric (the growing degree‐day, GDD; °C day) can be used to compare year‐classes on a physiologically relevant time‐scale, disentangling influences of climate (thermal history) on observed length‐at‐age trends. We conclude that the trends in North Sea cod length‐at‐age observed during the last three decades can be explained by a combination of temperature‐dependent growth increases and a trend toward earlier maturation, the latter likely induced by the intensive fishing pressure, and possibly evidence of fisheries‐induced evolution.  相似文献

Globally, spatial distributions of fish stocks are shifting but although the role of climate change in range shifts is increasingly appreciated, little remains known of the likely additional impact that high levels of fishing pressure might have on distribution. For North Sea cod, we show for the first time and in great spatial detail how the stock has shifted its distribution over the past 100 years. We digitized extensive historical fisheries data from paper charts in UK government archives and combined these with contemporary data to a time‐series spanning 1913–2012 (excluding both World Wars). New analysis of old data revealed that the current distribution pattern of cod – mostly in the deeper, northern‐ and north‐easternmost parts of the North Sea – is almost opposite to that during most of the Twentieth Century – mainly concentrated in the west, off England and Scotland. Statistical analysis revealed that the deepening, northward shift is likely attributable to warming; however, the eastward shift is best explained by fishing pressure, suggestive of significant depletion of the stock from its previous stronghold, off the coasts of England and Scotland. These spatial patterns were confirmed for the most recent 3½ decades by data from fisheries‐independent surveys, which go back to the 1970s. Our results demonstrate the fundamental importance of both climate change and fishing pressure for our understanding of changing distributions of commercially exploited fish.  相似文献

The stock abundance of the chub mackerel Scomber japonicus - a very important species for fisheries, particularly in Japan - in the Pacific Ocean off Japan has remained at a low level. For studying the population genetics of the chub mackerel, we isolated nine polymorphic microsatellite loci (12-31 alleles/locus; expected heterozygosity, 0.762-0.983) from this species. Cross-species amplification indicated that eight of the nine microsatellite loci in the blue mackerel S. australasicus were polymorphic and functional.  相似文献

Herring Clupea harengus L. viscera were examined for endoparasitic infections as part of a multidisciplinary stock identification project (WESTHER, EU Contract no. Q5RS-2002-01 056) which applied a range of stock discrimination techniques to the same individual fishes to obtain comparable results for multivariate analysis. Spawning and non-spawning adults, and juvenile herring were caught, over 3 years, by commercial and research vessels from numerous locations to the west of the UK and Ireland, along with control samples of spawning fish from the eastern Baltic Sea, and juveniles from sites in the eastern and western North Sea, and the north of Norway. The metacercariae of two renicolid digeneans (Cercaria pythionike and Cercaria doricha), one larval nematode (Anisakis simplex s.s.) and one larval cestode (Lacistorhynchus tenuis) were selected as tag species. Results were compared with those from herring collected between 1973 and 1982, which suggested remarkable stability in the parasite fauna of herring in the study area. These species were used to compare the parasite infracommunities of spawning herring. A significant variation in infracommunity structure was observed between different spawning grounds. These results suggest that the parasite fauna of herring are spatially variable but remain temporally stable in both the short and long term. Significant differences in prevalence and abundance of infections and comparisons of parasite infracommunity enabled the separation of putative herring stocks west of the British Isles. Distinctive patterns of parasite infection in two different spawning groups off the north coast of Scotland suggest that this area is occupied by two spawning populations, one recruiting from the west of Scotland, the other from outside this area, and most likely from the eastern North Sea. The distribution patterns of L. tenuis, C. doricha and C. pythionike suggest the potential for fish that spawn in three distinct International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) management units to be present in mixed aggregations found over the Malin Shelf, with significant implications for management in this area.  相似文献

During spring 1986 and winter 1987, zooplankton samples were collected over the entire North Sea by means of a multi-closing net-system. Before taxonomic treatment, wet weight estimates and carbon content conversions were carried out. From this data set, 4 962 522 tons zooplankton biomass (dry weight) were estimated for the whole North Sea during the spring survey. High biomasses (more than 100 mg C/m3) were located in areas between the Orkneys and the Shetlands, off the mouth of the Firth of Forth, the Channel and the river Rhine. Considerable zooplankton biomass was also found parallel to the Danish west coast. Furthermore, a narrow tongue of high biomass (partly greater than 200 mg C/m3) intruded from the north, between 1 °E and 4 °E, into the northern North Sea, turning to the east at 56°N, and continuing into deeper water layers to form a left turning “helix” of high biomass in the central part of the North Sea. During the winter survey the carbon content of the zooplankton stock was a factor 10 lower than in summer. Altogether, 519340 tons of zooplankton biomass (dry weight) were estimated in winter. Centres of relatively high biomass were located off the mouth of the rivers Rhine, Weser and Elbe and off the British east coast moving in a cyclic way across the Dogger Bank into the central North Sea. A further maximum of zooplankton abundance was found in the Skagerrak region. However, an intrusion of zooplankton from the shelf edge into the North Sea was not observed in winter. A qualitative analysis of species composition showed that small copepods dominated the zooplankton in the southern and eastern North Sea. The “eddy” of high biomass in the northern North Sea observed in spring, however, was mostly shaped by the large copepodCalanus finmarchicus (70–90%). The distribution of zooplankton biomass in the North Sea is discussed in relation to the hydrographic conditions and to the biology of the dominant species.  相似文献

In the horse mackerel the gametes develop asynchronously and are released in batches. The maturity cycle is characterized by a rapid post-spawning recovery period and a relatively long period of oocyte maturation. Mean gonad weight reached a peak in June and intraovarian hyaline oocytes occurred from May to August. Determination of fecundity was complicated by resorption of oocytes both before and after spawning, and by the fact that resting and developing oocytes were not clearly separated by size. An estimate of'potential fecundity'was obtained by a combination of histology and oocyte measurement. Plankton surveys showed that a major spawning area exists in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, with eggs occurring from May to late August. An estimate of annual egg production was combined with the fecundity data to give an estimate of stock size of about 500 000 tons.  相似文献

The prevalence and spatial distribution of major diseases of dab Limanda limanda in the North Sea and adjacent areas were studied in the summers 1992 to 1997. Areas covered were the North Sea, Irish Sea, northern and northeastern British Waters and the English Channel. The diseases studied were lymphocystis, epidermal hyperplasia/papilloma and skin ulceration. To standardise data, results were analysed for females >15 cm (>3 yr old). Data were subjected to median polish, and additive, extended and additive plus multiplicative models were applied to best account for effects of region and year. Annual differences in disease prevalence were low whilst differences between areas were pronounced. For lymphocystis higher prevalence was observed in the northwestern sector of the North Sea, at the northern tip of Scotland and in an area south of Iceland. Prevalence was low in the Irish Sea, the English Channel and the southern North Sea, and intermediate in the German Bight. For epidermal hyperplasia/papilloma, levels were low at Icelandic stations, in the northern Irish Sea, in the southern North Sea and the English Channel, whilst levels were high in the northwestern part of the North Sea and the German Bight. Elevated levels of skin ulceration were found on the Dogger, at 1 station in the Irish Sea (off Sellafield) and at 1 station to the south of Iceland. Lower levels were detected west of Iceland. Prevalence in all other areas was intermediate. It is concluded that a detailed analysis of available data on disease prevalence and putative causative factors is desirable and, given the good availability of data, would be a promising step forward toward elucidating possible cause and effect relationships between diseases and anthropogenic factors.  相似文献
