Photosynthesis and photoinhibition after night chilling in seedlings of two tropical tree species grown under three irradiances 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigated the physiological effect of night chilling (CN) on potted seedlings of two tropical tree species, Calophyllum polyanthum and Linociera insignis, in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. Seedlings grown under 8, 25, and 50 % daylight for five months were moved to a 4–6 °C cold storage house for three consecutive nights, and returned to the original shaded sites during the day. CN resulted in strong suppression of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance for L. insignis, and reduced photorespiration rates, carboxylation efficiency, and maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) at dawn and midday for both species. CN increased dawn and midday rates of non-photochemical quenching, and the contents of malondialdehyde and H2O2 for both species. CN also induced inactivation or destruction of PS2 reaction centres. The impacts of CN on tropical seedlings increased with the number of CN. Shading could significantly mitigate the adverse effects of CN for both species. After 3-d-recovery, gas exchange and fluorescence parameters for both species returned to pre-treatment levels in most cases. Thus CN induced mainly stomatal limitation of photosynthesis for L. insignis, and non-stomatal limitation for C. polyanthum. C. polyanthum was more susceptible to CN than L. insignis. Fog, which often occurs in Xishuangbanna, could be beneficial to chilling sensitive tropical seedlings in this area through alleviating photoinhibition or photodamage by reducing sunlight. 相似文献

Seedlings of two late-successional tropical rainforest tree species, Tetragastris panamensis (Engler) O. Kuntze and Calophyllum longifolium (Willd.), were field grown for 3-4 months at an open site near Panama City (9 degrees N), Panama, under plastic films that either transmitted or excluded most solar UV-B radiation. Experiments were designed to test whether leaves developing under bright sunlight with strongly reduced UV-B are capable of acclimating to near-ambient UV-B conditions. Leaves of T. panamensis that developed under near-ambient UV-B contained higher amounts of UV-absorbing substances than leaves of seedlings grown under reduced UV-B. Photosynthetic pigment composition, content of alpha-tocopherol, CO(2) assimilation, potential photosystem II (PSII) efficiency (evaluated by F(v)/F(m) ratios) and growth of T. panamensis and C. longifolium did not differ between seedlings developed under near-ambient and reduced solar UV-B. When seedlings were transferred from the reduced UV-B treatment to the near-ambient UV-B treatment, a pronounced inhibition of photosynthetic capacity was observed initially in both species. UV-B-mediated inhibition of photosynthetic capacity nearly fully recovered within 1 week of the transfer in C. longifolium, whereas in T. panamensis an about 35% reduced capacity of CO(2) uptake was maintained. A marked increase in UV-absorbing substances was observed in foliage of transferred T. panamensis seedlings. Both species exhibited enhanced mid-day photoinhibition of PSII immediately after being transferred from the reduced UV-B to the near-ambient UV-B treatment. This effect was fully reversible within 1d in T. panamensis and within a few days in C. longifolium. The data show that leaves of these tropical tree seedlings, when developing in full-spectrum sunlight, are effectively protected against high solar UV-B radiation. In contrast, leaves developing under conditions of low UV-B lacked sufficient UV protection. They experienced a decline in photosynthetic competence when suddenly exposed to near-ambient UV-B levels, but exhibited pronounced acclimative responses. 相似文献

Net CO2 exchange and in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence were studied in mangrove (Rhizophora stylosa) leaves at a field site in Western Australia, and leaf samples were collected for the analysis of enzymes and substrates potentially involved in anti-oxidant photoprotection. Photosynthesis saturated at 900 μmol quanta m?2 s?1 and at no more than 7.5 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1. However, fluorescence analysis indicated no chronic photoinhibition: Fv:Fm was 0.8 shortly after sunset, and quantum efficiencies of PSII were high up to 500 μmol quanta m?2 s?1. Electron flow through PSII was more than 3 times higher than electron consumption through Calvin cycle activity, however, even with photorespiration and temperature-dependent Rubisco specificities taken into account. Acknowledging the growing body of literature attributing a role to antioxidant systems in photoprotection, we also assayed the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and several enzymes potentially involved in H2O2 metabolism. Their levels of maximal potential activity were compared with those in greenhouse-grown mangroves (R. mangle), and growth chamber-grown peas. Monodehydroascorbate reductase activities were similar in all species, and glutathione reductase was lower, and ascorbate peroxidase ~40% higher, in the mangroves. SOD activities in field-grown mangroves were more than 40 times those in peas. Our results support the hypothesis that O2 may be a significant sink for photochemically derived electrons under field conditions, and suggest an important role for O2? scavenging in photoprotection. However, when relative patterns are compared between species, imbalances between SOD and the other enzymes in the mangroves suggest that more components of the system (e.g. phenolics or peroxidases) are yet to be identified. 相似文献

Background and Aims
Cerradão (Brazilian woodland savannas) and seasonally dry forests (SDF) from southeastern Brazil occur under the same climate but are remarkably distinct in species composition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of soil origin in the initial growth and distribution of SDF and Cerradão species. Methods
We conducted a greenhouse experiment growing Cerradão and SDF tree seedlings over their soil and the soil of the contrasting vegetation type. We evaluated soil nutrient availability and seedling survivorship, growth and leaf functional traits. Results
Despite the higher nutrient availability in SDF soils, soil origin did not affect seedling survivorship. The three SDF species demonstrated home-soil advantage, enhanced growth with increasing soil nutrient availability and had higher growth rates than Cerradão species, even on Cerradão soils. Growth of Cerradão seedlings was not higher on Cerradão soil and, overall, was not positively correlated with soil nutrient availability. Conclusions
SDF species are fast-growing species while Cerradão trees tend to be slow-growing species. Although savanna soil reduces growth of forest species, our findings suggest that soil chemical attributes, alone, does not exclude the occurrence of SDF seedlings in Cerradão and vice-versa. 相似文献9.

Dynamics and possible function of the lutein epoxide (Lx) cycle, that is, the reversible conversion of Lx to lutein (L) in the light-harvesting antennae, were investigated in leaves of tropical tree species. Photosynthetic pigments were quantified in nine Inga species and species from three other genera. In Inga , Lx levels were high in shade leaves (mostly above 20 mmol mol−1 chlorophyll) and low in sun leaves. In Virola surinamensis , both sun and shade leaves exhibited very high Lx contents (about 60 mmol mol−1 chlorophyll). In Inga marginata grown under high irradiance, Lx slowly accumulated within several days upon transfer to deep shade. When shade leaves of I. marginata were briefly exposed to the sunlight, both violaxanthin and Lx were quickly de-epoxidized. Subsequently, overnight recovery occurred only for violaxanthin, not for Lx. In such leaves, containing reduced levels of Lx and increased levels of L, chlorophyll fluorescence induction showed significantly slower reduction of the photosystem II electron acceptor, Q A , and faster formation as well as a higher level of non-photochemical quenching. The results indicate that slow Lx accumulation in Inga leaves may improve light harvesting under limiting light, while quick de-epoxidation of Lx to L in response to excess light may enhance photoprotection. 相似文献

Only recently have studies addressed the effect of early-colonizing vegetation on tree seedling survival and growth during secondary succession in tropical old fields, and few studies have elucidated the physiological responses of tree seedlings to different vegetational communities. We compared growth and various photosynthetic parameters for seedlings of four rain-forest tree species, Cedrela tonduzii, Inga punctata, Ocotea whitei, and Tapirira mexicana, growing in areas of pasture grass and shrubs in early-successional abandoned pasture in Costa Rica; in addition, we made measurements for two species in forest gaps. We tested the general hypothesis that early-colonizing shrubs facilitate growth of forest tree seedlings. Specifically, we measured microclimate, growth, CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, photosystem II quantum yield (KPSII), and xanthophyll pigment pools for all seedlings. Photosynthetic flux density (PFD) was higher under grass than shrubs or forest gaps, but was highly variable in each growth environment. For three of the four species, height growth was greatest in the grass compared to the shrubs and forest gaps; growth was similar below grass and shrubs for O. whitei. Photosynthetic capacity, apparent quantum yield, and stomatal conductance did not vary across habitats, but light compensation point and PFD at light saturation tended to be higher in the grass compared to forest and shrub growth environments. Water use efficiency differed across growth environments for three of the species. For plants in ambient PFD and dark-adapted plants, the efficiency of excitation energy transfer through PSII was lowest for plants in the grass compared to shrubs and forest gaps and also differed across species. Measurement of steady-state responses of KPSII to increasing PFD indicated a significant effect of growth environment at low PFD for all species and significant effects at high PFD only for I. punctata. All species exhibited a high degree of midday xanthophyll de-epoxidation in the different growth environments. Xanthophyll pigment pool size on an area basis was highest in the grass compared to shrubs and forest gaps for all four species. The results suggest that shrubs do not provide a facilitative effect for growth or photosynthesis for ~1.5-year-old seedlings of these four species. We conclude that site differences in success of tree seedlings during succession are a result of complex interactions of facilitation and competition and are not simply based on physiological responses to PFD. 相似文献

Photosynthesis and photoprotection under drought in the annual desert plant Anastatica hierochuntica
Anastatica hierochuntica is an annual desert plant, which was recently shown to have unusually low nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) and a high PSII electron transport rate (ETR). In the current study, we examined how these unusual characteristics are related to a lack of CO2 and inhibition of net photosynthetic rate (PN). We compared the photosynthetic and photoprotective response of A. hierochuntica and sunflower (Helianthus annuus), under conditions of photosynthetic inhibition, with either low CO2 or drought. We found that under nonsteady state conditions of low CO2 availability, A. hierochuntica exhibited about half of the NPQ values and almost twice of the ETR values of H. annuus. However, the long-term inhibition of PN under drought caused a similar increase in NPQ and a decrease in ETR in both A. hierochuntica and H. annuus. These results suggest that the unusually low NPQ and high ETR in A. hierochuntica are not directly related to a response to drought conditions. 相似文献

The effects of different nutrient availabilities on growth and biomass partitioning in seedlings from the tropical deciduous forest in Mexico were compared. The tree species studied were Heliocarpus pallidus, a species associated with disturbed parts of the forest, and Caesalpinia eriotachys, Jacquinia pungens and Recchia mexicana, species from mature, undisturbed habitats. The tropical deciduous tree seedlings were grown in pure silica sand for 50 days inside growth chambers under four nutrient regimes; 5, 20, 100 and 200% Long Ashton nutrient solutions. Data showed contrasting responses among species to different nutrient availabilities. Except Jacquinia pungens, all species had increased growth and productivity as nutrient level increased from 5 to 100%; however, no significant differences in these parameters were detected between 100 and 200% in all species. Compared with mature forest species, pioneer species showed higher variations in biomass production, relative growth rate and net assimilation rate. In contrast to mature forest species, root/ shoot ratios in Heliocarpus pallidus were greater and thus showed higher biomass allocation to roots when nutrient supply was limited. This response suggests higher phenotypic plasticity in pioneer species. Species from mature parts of the forest (Caesalpinia eriostachys, Recchia mexicana) showed less dependency on nutrient supply than pioneer species. These responses appear to support observations from studies with temperate plants investigating growth responses to soil fertility. 相似文献

Leaf dynamics,self-shading and carbon gain in seedlings of a tropical pioneer tree 总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
We examined leaf dynamics and leaf age gradients of photosynthetic capacity and nitrogen concentration in seedlings of the tropical pioneer tree, Heliocarpus appendiculatus, grown in a factorial design under controlled conditions with two levels each of nutrients, ambient light (light levels incident above the canopy), and self-shading (the gradient of light levels from upper to lower leaves on the shoot). Correlations among these parameters were examined in order to determine the influence of self-shading, and the regulation of standing leaf numbers, on leaf longevity and its association with leaf photosynthetic capacity. Leaf longevity and the number of leaves on the main shoot were both reduced in high light, while in the low light environment, they were reduced in the steeper self-shading gradient. In high nutrients, leaf longevity was reduced whereas leaf number increased. Leaf initiation rates were higher in the high nutrient treatment but were not influenced by either light treatment. Maximum-light saturated photosynthetic rate, on an area basis, was greater in the high light and nutrient treatments, while the decline in photosynthetic capacity in realtion to leaf position on the shoot was more rapid in high light and in low nutrients. Leaf longevity was negatively correlated among treatments with initial photosynthetic capacity. The leaf position at which photosynthetic capacity was predicted to reach zero was positively correlated with the number of leaves on the shoot, supporting the hypothesis that leaf numbers are regulated by patterns of self-shading. The negative association of longevity and initial photosynthetic capacity apparently arises from different associations among gradients of photosynthetic capacity, leaf numbers and leaf initiation rates in relation to light and nutrient availability. The simultaneous consideration of age and position of leaves illuminates the role of self-shading as an important factor influencing leaf senescence and canopy structure and dynamics. 相似文献

Parental distance and plant density dependence of seedling leaf turnover and survival was examined to investigate predictions of the Janzen–Connell hypothesis. The focal study species, Shorea macroptera is a canopy tree species in a lowland rain forest in peninsular Malaysia. We found that the peak of the distribution of plants shifted from 3–6 m to 6–9 m during the course of the change from seedling to sapling stage. The leaf demography of the seedlings was influenced by their distance from the adult tree and also by the seedling density. Although significant density- and distance dependence in leaf production was not detected, seedling leaf loss decreased with distance from the parent tree and with seedling density. Similarly, leaf damage was not found to be distance- or density-dependent, but net leaf gain of seedlings increased with distance from the parent tree. Although no significant distance- or density-dependence was evident in terms of leaf damage, significant distance dependence of the net leaf gain was found. Thus, we concluded that positive distance dependence in the leaf turnover of seedlings may gradually contribute to a shift in the distribution pattern of the progeny through reductions in growth and survivorship. 相似文献

Summary The growth responses of seedlings of Amphipterygium adstringens, Caesalpinia eriostachys, and C. platyloba, species associated with undisturbed parts of the tropical deciduous forest in México, and Apoplanesia paniculata and Heliocarpus pallidus, two gap-requiring pioneer species, were determined under contrasting light conditions in a growth chamber experiment. The high (400 mol m–2 s–1) and low (80 mol m–2 s–1) light treatments correspond to the light available in a medium size gap and underneath the vegetation canopy in the deciduous forest during the rainy season, respectively. Following four destructive harvests the biomass production, relative growth rate, root/shoot ratio, specific leaf area, net assimilation rate, leaf area ratio and light dependency were determined for all species. In the high light treatment all species achieved higher relative growth rates and net assimilation rates than when growing at low light intensity. However, the two pioneer species showed the highest light dependency and were the species more affected by the low light treatment in biomass production. The two Caesalpinia species showed similar growth responses, but C. platyloba was the most shade tolerant species. Plastic adjustments in terms of the specific leaf area were more evident in the two pioneer species. 相似文献

Summary Adol had negligible effects on germination of Pinus resinosa Ait. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. seeds whereas TAG, Foli-gard, and Geon Vinyl Latex reduced the rate and final percent germination in proportion to dosage. When applied to the soil surface, some concentrations of Foli-gard increased dry weight accumulation and Geon Vinyl Latex improved leaf water balance of surviving seedlings of Robinia pseudoacacia. Adol had no effect when applied to the soil surface. re]19730508 相似文献
