The present study analyzes the respiratory responses of the neotropical air-breathing fish Hoplosternum littorale to graded hypoxia and increased sulfide concentrations. The oxygen uptake (VO2), critical O2 tension (PcO2), respiratory (fR) and air-breathing (fRA) frequencies in response to graded hypoxia were determined for fish acclimated to 28 degrees C. H. littorale was able to maintain a constant VO2 down to a PcO2 of 50 mm Hg, below which fish became dependent on the environmental O2 even with significant increases in fR. The fRA was kept constant around 1 breath h(-1) above 50 mm Hg and increased significantly below 40 mm Hg, reaching maximum values (about 4.5 breaths h(-1)) at 10 mm Hg. The lethality to sulfide concentrations under normoxic and hypoxic conditions were also determined along with the fRA. For the normoxic fish the sulfide lethal limit was about 70 microM, while in the hypoxic ones this limit increased to 87 muM. The high sulfide tolerance of H. littorale may be attributed to the air-breathing capability, which is stimulated by this compound. 相似文献

We have studied the premaxillary teeth in three armoured catfish, Corydoras aeneus, C. arcuatus and Hoplosternum littorale , by means of light and electron microscopy, in order to compare their development, fine structure and mode of attachment with that of odontodes and other teleost teeth. A premaxillary dentition consisting of small (50–100 μm long) slender pointed teeth showing no true replacement is only present in larval and juvenile stages and is subsequently lost, possibly in relation to a change in feeding mode from predatory to bottom feeder. Like odontodes, teeth are composed of dentine surrounding a pulp cavity and are covered by a hypermineralized cap. Particular features, also found in odontodes, are the absence of dentinal tubules and of nerves and capillaries in the pulp cavity, both possibly related to the small size of the teeth. The irregular pattern of implantation and the variability in attachment mode (primary and/or secondary attachment bone, fusion, mere apposition or ligamentous connection) distinguish the teeth from most other teleost teeth and from odontodes and are interpreted as reflecting considerable differences in dynamics of remodeling of the supporting element (premaxillary bone vs scute). This comparison of teeth and odontodes strongly supports current views according to which teeth and odontodes are two very closely related phenotypic expressions of a single, modifiable, morphogenetic system probably rooted in the earliest stages of vertebrate evolution. 相似文献

The family Callichthyidae comprises eight genera of fishes widely distributed across the Neotropical region. In the present study, sequences of the mitochondrial genes 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, ND4, tRNAHis, and tRNASer were obtained from 28 callichthyid specimens. The sample included 12 species of Corydoras, three species of Aspidoras, two species of Brochis, Dianema, Lepthoplosternum, and Megalechis, and two local populations of Callichthys and Hoplosternum. Sequences of Nematogenys inermis (Nematogenyidae), Trichomycterus areolatus, and Henonemus punctatus (Trichomycteridae), Astroblepus sp. (Astroblepidae), and Neoplecostomus paranensis, Delturus parahybae, and Hemipsilichthys nimius (Loricariidae) were included as the outgroup. Phylogenetic analyses were performed by using the methods of maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood. The results of almost all analyses were very similar. The family Callichthyidae is monophyletic and comprises two natural groups: the subfamilies Corydoradinae (Aspidoras, Brochis, and Corydoras) and Callichthyinae (Callichthys, Dianema, Hoplosternum, Lepthoplosternum, and Megalechis), as previously demonstrated by morphological studies. The relationships observed within these subfamilies are in several ways different from those previously proposed on the basis of morphological data. Molecular results were compared with the morphologic and cytogenetic data available on the family. 相似文献

The bimodal gill(water)/gut(air)-breathing Amazonian catfish Hoplosternum littorale that frequents hypoxic habitats uses "mammalian" 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (DPG) in addition to "piscine" ATP and GTP as erythrocytic O(2) affinity modulators. Its electrophoretically distinct anodic and cathodic hemoglobins (Hb(An) and Hb(Ca)) were isolated for functional and molecular characterization. In contrast to Hb(An), phosphate-free Hb(Ca) exhibits a pronounced reverse Bohr effect (increased O(2) affinity with decreasing pH) that is obliterated by ATP, and opposite pH dependences of K(T) (O(2) association constant of low affinity, tense state) and the overall heat of oxygenation. Dose-response curves indicate small chloride effects and pronounced and differentiated phosphate effects, DPG < ATP < GTP < IHP. Hb(Ca)-O(2) equilibria analyzed in terms of the Monod-Wyman-Changeux model show that small T state bond energy differences underlie the differentiated phosphate effects. Synthetic peptides, corresponding to N-terminal fragment of the cytoplasmic domain of trout band 3 protein, undergo oxygenation-linked binding to Hb(Ca), suggesting a metabolic regulatory role for this hemoglobin. The amino acid sequences for the alpha and beta chains of Hb(Ca) obtained by Edman degradation and cDNA sequencing show unusual substitutions at the phosphate-binding site that are discussed in terms of its reverse Bohr effect and anion sensitivities. 相似文献

With an aim to study the mechanism of adaptation to acute hypoxic periods by hypoxia-tolerant catfish, Clarias batrachus, the mass-specific metabolic rate (VO2) along with its hematological parameters, metabolic response and antioxidant enzyme activities were studied. During progressive hypoxia, C. batrachus was found to be an oxyconformer and showed a steady decline in its aquatic oxygen consumption rate. When C. batrachus was exposed for different periods at experimental hypoxia level (0.98?±?0.1 mg/L, DO), hemoglobin and hematocrit concentrations were increased, along with decrease in mean cellular hemoglobin concentration, which reflected a physiological adaptation to enhance oxygen transport capacity. Significant increase in serum glucose and lactate concentration as well as lactate dehydrogenase activity was observed. Antioxidant enzymes were found to operate independently of one another, while total glutathione concentration was unaffected in any of the tissues across treatments. These observations suggested that hypoxia resulted in the development of oxidative stress and C. batrachus was able to respond through increase in the oxygen carrying capacity, metabolic depression and efficient antioxidant defense system to survive periods of acute hypoxia. 相似文献

Abstract In some living osteichthyans (e.g. the armoured catfishes) the postcranial dermal skeleton exhibits tooth-like structures (odontodes) similar to those present in the dermal skeleton of the ancient craniates. We have undertaken this work to compare odontode with tooth development, structure, attachment to a bony support and replacement. We studied the odontodes fixed on the scutes (i.e. postcranial dermal plates) in a growth series of Corydoras aeneus using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Odontodes are constituted of a pulp cavity surrounded by a cone of dentine itself capped with hypermineralized substance. The pulp cavity is devoid of nerves and blood vessels and there are no odontoblastic processes in the dentine. The dentine cone is firmly attached to a circular bony protuberance of the scute surface, the pedicel or attachment bone, by means of a ligament. An odontode anlage develops as a small invagination of a dermal papilla projecting into the epidermis, the basal cell layer of which constitutes a dental epithelium. First, dentine is deposited, next the hypermineralized substance, then the ligament and attachment bone. Odontodes develop in two positions with regard to the scute surface: a primary position when new odontodes form at the posterior border of the enlarging scute; a secondary position when new odontodes replace old odontodes that have been shed during thickening of the scute. In this case, the ligament and part of the base of the dentine cone are resorbed but not the pedicel of attachment bone, which is covered by deposition of scute matrix after the odontode has been shed. Within the scute matrix, the embedded pedicels of successive generations of odontodes are preserved, forming piles in the scutes of adult specimens. 相似文献

Sound production and reproductive behaviour of the armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus (Callichthyidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sound production during reproductive behaviour, dyadic encounters and distress situations was investigated in the callichthyid catfish Corydoras paleatus. Sounds were broad-band, pulsed, acoustic signals produced during abduction of the pectoral spines. Only males emitted trains of sounds during courting and trains of sounds of shorter duration during dyadic encounters. Several males, which are usually smaller than females, courted one gravid female without obvious cooperation or competition between them. During mating, one previously vocalizing male clasped the female's barbels with one pectoral spine and inseminated the eggs. The number of successful spawnings, days until spawning, and number of eggs laid was not related to the number of males (one, two or three) combined with one female. Males did not behave aggressively towards each other during courting or in dyadic encounters. In distress situations, when fish were hand held, both sexes and juveniles produced single sounds. The dominant frequency was negatively correlated with body size and the sound duration was positively correlated with relative length of pectoral spines (standardized to body length). This acoustical behaviour in C. paleatus differs considerably from Hoplosternum thoracatum, a representative of the callichthyine subfamily, in which vocalization was observed during territorial behaviour in males and aggressive behaviour in both sexes. This is the first report of a major difference in vocalizing behaviour within one teleost family. 相似文献

Many animals experience fasting because of the high temporal and spatial sporadicity of food availability. Once food is available, animals use external energy to restore their depressed functional performance. In the present study, the physiological and morphological responses to the first bout of refeeding in juvenile southern catfish (Silurus meridionalis) were characterized. Fish that had undergone long-term fasting (fasted for 32 days, the S32 group) exhibited a lower resting metabolic rate ( $ {\dot{\text{M}}} $ O2rest decreased by 49 %), lower peak metabolic rate ( $ {\dot{\text{M}}} $ O2peak decreased by 24 %), greater energy expenditure (increased by 15 %) during specific dynamic action (SDA) and longer duration SDA response (increased by 41 %) than those of a control group (S0 group, fasted for 0 days). The S32 group showed a significantly reduced peak gastric evacuation rate (0.131 g meal h?1) compared with the S0 group (0.315 g meal h?1). The S0 group also had a shorter gastric evacuation time (36 h) than either of the two fasting groups (both 64 h). The S32 group displayed a higher minimum gastric pH (3.1) than the S0 and S16 groups (2.6). Refeeding did not trigger an increase in the wet mass of the gastrointestinal tract, whereas the liver wet mass of the S0 and the two fasting groups increased significantly with refeeding. The trypsin and lipase of the S0 group showed higher mass-specific activities and organ capacities than either of the two fasting groups at certain specific time points. A similar result was found for aminopeptidase activity. Multiple loach meals equaling 6 % of the body weight of the fed fish completely restored the liver morphology within the S16 but not the S32 group. Our results suggest that the regulation of the digestive performance of the gastrointestinal tract in S. meridionalis that are finishing their first small meal after fasting is delayed compared with that of nonfasting fish and that it is similar to the characteristics (lower $ {\dot{\text{M}}} $ O2peak, greater SDA and a longer duration of the SDA response) of the refeeding SDA. 相似文献

Synopsis Three sympatric, closely related armoured catfishes showed a similar, bimodal breeding season in coastal plain swamps in Suriname (South America). The bimodal pattern of reproduction inCallichthys callichthys,Hoplosternum littorale andHoplosternum thoracatum was correlated to the annual distribution of rainfall. Floating bubble nests were constructed throughout the period of swamp inundation (rainy season). Close inspection of the timing of reproduction ofH. littorale in northern South America revealed the relationship between reproduction and rainfall, but also unexpected differences in the length of the breeding season. Strong interspecific competition among the three species was probably avoided through differentiation of nest sites with respect to water depth, distance to the nearest tree, distance to the edge of the swamp, and cover above the nest. Nests ofH. littorale were built in herbaceous swamps, whileC. callichthys andH. thoracatum build their nests in swamp-forest. Nests ofC. callichthys were observed in extremely shallow water or in holes. Few nests of the three species were observed in canals. Over large parts of their geographical rangeC. callichthys andH. thoracatum are found in small rainforest streams. Several aspects of the reproductive ecology and behaviour of both species are probably related to the unpredictability of the stream habitat. 相似文献

The present study investigated the respiratory rates, frequency of air breathing and ability to extract oxygen from air compared to body mass of three neotropical air-breathing fishes (Lepidosiren paradoxa, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus and Hoplosternum littorale) with different accessory organs, under the same conditions of hypoxia (PO(2)<5 mm Hg) and temperature (25 degrees C), using the same apparatus. The results indicated a superior capacity of H. littorale (16.01 ml O(2) breath(-1) kg(-1)) compared to H. unitaeniatus (7.03 ml O(2) breath(-1) kg(-1)) and L. paradoxa (4.95 ml O(2) breath(-1) kg(-1)). 相似文献

Synopsis Newly hatched larval Hoplosternum littorale do not exhibit bimodal respiration upon hatching but depend initially on branchial respiration. As the respiratory intestine develops, its increasing length leads to an increasing dependence on aerial respiration. The respiratory intestine first appears when the fish is 9 days old but is microscopic at this age and becomes detectable by gross morphological examination at 13 days old. Development of the gut for the remainder of the juvenile period (up to 32 days old) consists of increasing length, mucosal folding, concentration of taste buds, gastric glands, mucous glands and goblet cells. Stage 1 commenced with newly hatched larvae until the larval fish were 11 days old. During this stage the fish did not have the capacity to air-breathe and thus behaved as oxygen conformers. Stage 2 extended from day 12 to day 23 and the fish had the capacity to air-breathe although the respiratory intestine was still developing. Stage 3 began from day 24 to day 32 and at this point the respiratory intestine was well-developed and functioned efficiently. The rate of oxygen consumption of the larval fish was found to be related to dissolved oxygen concentration, age of the larval fish and various interactions of these two factors. 相似文献

The surface architecture of the olfactory rosette ofHeteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. The olfactory rosette is an oval structure composed of a number
of lamellae arranged pinnately on a median raphe. The raphe is invested with epithelial cells and pits which represent goblet
cell openings. On the basis of cellular characteristics and their distribution the lateral surface of each olfactory lamella
is identified as sensory, ciliated non-sensory and non-ciliated non-sensory epithelium. The sensory epithelium is provided
with receptor and supporting cells. The ciliated non-sensory epithelium is covered with dense cilia obscuring the presence
of other cell types. The non-ciliated non-sensory epithelium is with many polygonal areas containing cells. 相似文献

Exposure of fish to alkaline conditions inhibits the rate of ammonia excretion, leading to ammonia accumulation and toxicity. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of ureogenesis via the urea cycle, to avoid the accumulation of ammonia to a toxic level during chronic exposure to alkaline conditions, for the air-breathing walking catfish, Clarias batrachus, where a full complement of urea cycle enzyme activity has been documented. The walking catfish can survive in water with a pH up to 10. At a pH of 10 the ammonia excretion rate by the walking catfish decreased by approximately 75% within 6 h. Although there was a gradual improvement of ammonia excretion rate by the alkaline-exposed fish, the rate remained 50% lower, even after 7 days. This decrease of ammonia excretion was accompanied by a significant accumulation of ammonia in plasma and body tissues (except in the brain). Urea-N excretion for alkaline-exposed fish increased 2.5-fold within the first day, which was maintained until day 3 and was then followed by a slight decrease to maintain a 2-fold increase in the urea-N excretion rate, even after 7 days. There was also a higher accumulation of urea in plasma and other body tissues (liver, kidney, muscle and brain). The activity of glutamine synthetase and three enzymes operating in the urea cycle (carbamyl phosphate synthetase, argininosuccinate synthetase, argininosuccinate lyase) increased significantly in hepatic and extra-hepatic tissue, such as the kidney and muscle in C. batrachus, during exposure to alkaline water. A significant increase in plasma lactate concentration noticed during alkaline exposure possibly helped in the maintenance of the acid-base balance. It is apparent that the stimulation of ureogenesis via the induced urea cycle is one of the major physiological strategies adopted by the walking catfish (C. batrachus) during chronic exposure to alkaline water, to avoid the in vivo accumulation of ammonia to a toxic level in body tissues and for the maintenance of pH homeostasis. 相似文献

The stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) (Siluriformes: Heteropneustidae) has been reported to harbor as many as 19 species of caryophyllidean tapeworms (Cestoda) of 11 genera in tropical Asia (Indomalayan zoogeographical region). However, a critical review of the species composition has shown that only 1 species, Lucknowia fossilisi Gupta, 1961 (Lytocestidae), is a specific parasite of H. fossilis. Three other species, Djombangia penetrans Bovien, 1926 (syn., Djombangia caballeroi Sahay and Sahay, 1977 ), Pseudocaryophyllaeus ritai Gupta and Singh, 1983 (syn. Pseudocaryophyllaeus lucknowensis Gupta and Sinha, 1984 ), and Pseudocaryophyllaeus tenuicollis (Bovien, 1926) Ash, Scholz, Oros and Kar, 2011 (syn. P. mackiewiczi Gupta and Parmar, 1982 ), were found only once. Lucknowia fossilisi is redescribed on the basis of new material collected in West Bengal and voucher specimens from Maharashtra, India. A total of 9 species of Capingentoides, Lucknowia, Lytocestus, Pseudoadenoscolex, Pseudocaryophyllaeus, Pseudoheteroinverta, and Sukhapatae are newly synonymized with L. fossilisi and previous synonymies of 9 other species, proposed by Hafeezulah (1993), are confirmed. Generic diagnosis of Lucknowia Gupta, 1961 is amended. In addition, 1 species of Pseudobatrachus and 2 species of the monotypic genera Pseudoneckinverta and Sudhaena are invalidated as nomina nuda. 相似文献

The population ecology of the trichomycterid catfish, Trichomycterus itacarambiensis, from the Olhos d'Àgua Cave, Itacarambi Co., Minas Gerais, eastern Brazil, was investigated by the mark-recapture method during the dry season of 1994 (April to October). The cave is subject to a pronounced seasonality, and is flooded during part of the rainy period. All individuals captured along the 5000 m long stream gallery (divided in 50 sections) were marked by tattooing, measured and examined for the degree of pigmentation reduction. About one third of the population is truly albinic; the remainder may exhibit partial depigmentation. After five bimestrial collections, 583 specimens have been marked, of which 150 were recaptured at least once. Estimated population size was 1500–2000 individuals longer than 20 mm SL. The total population size of T. itacarambiensis is considered small when compared to those of epigean trichomycterids and of other studied cavefishes as well. Mean population density was 0.15–0.20 individuals m-2 throughout the dry season; it increased with the distance to the stream resurgence, probably due to the higher food availability upstream. This population density may be considered intermediate to those of other troglobitic fishes. Most recaptures (66%) were done in the same section as the previous capture. Active movements, both upstream and downstream, were recorded up to distances of 600 m; a few possibly passive, downstream movements covered distances from 900 to 1500 m. T. itacarambiensis catfishes move more frequently and for longer distances than the Brazilian blind pimelodids, Pimelodella kronei. Individual growth in T. itacarambiensis probably occurs in pulses, during the rainy seasons; interruption of growth in the dry season is attributed to the pronounced food shortage. The mean longevity was estimated as seven years. Differences between pigmented and albino individuals include a higher frequency of downstream movements and slightly higher growth rates in the latter. 相似文献

Eleven species of catfish (Siluriformes) found in Korean freshwater are economically important resources and include five endemic species. However, there are no studies on phylogenetic analysis of all catfish species in Korea at a molecular level. The species-level analysis of catfish species is usually carried out through morphological characters and controversial due to phenotypic variation. In this study, the partial sequences of 16S rRNA and cytochrome b mitochondrial genes were analyzed for species identification and phylogenetic relationships among 11 species of catfish from 10 different rivers in Korea. The nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA and cytochrome b consisted of 587 and 441 nucleotide base pairs, respectively. Sequence analysis of both genes revealed that the 11 species fell into three distinct groups, which were genetically distinct from each other and exhibited identical phylogenetic resolution. Sequence divergences between congeneric species averaged 1.78% and 7.39% for 16S rRNA and cytochrome b, respectively. The phylogenetic relationships forming well-differentiated clades in the NJ, ML and BI trees were identical for both fragments. This research demonstrates that partial sequences of both the genes can efficiently identify the 11 species of catfish in Korea, indicating the usefulness of mtDNA-based approach in species identification. 相似文献

Summary Alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase activities were investigated in typical neutrophils and in vacuolated cells, the latter considered to be another type of neutrophil in catfish blood. This study was carried out by light- and electron-microscopy. Two lines of neutrophils were recognized in the peripheral blood of catfish. Alkaline phosphatase activity was present only in the vacuolated neutrophils; peroxidase activity appeared only in the typical neutrophils. The presence of two types of neutrophil in catfish blood suggests that important steps of neutrophil evolution occurred in fish. 相似文献

Diel cycles of voluntary food intake, locomotor activity and air breathing were studied in Hoplosternum littorale (Hancock, 1828), a siluriform fish of the Callichtyidae family living in marshes in northern South America. The study was carried out with six groups of 30 fish each reared in 200-1 tanks equipped with demand-feeders and maintained under artificial light-dark conditions (13.5 L/10.5 D). Feed demand started at dusk and increased throughout the night with a peak between 02.00 and 05.00 hours, during which 3-h period the fish ate 40% of their total daily ration. There was a marked peak in air breathing and locomotion at dusk, followed by an increased feed intake. When the light-dark cycle was advanced by 9 h the observed phenomena were the same, so it is assumed that the light-dark alternation is the synchronizer. In starved fish, locomotor activity and air breathing were increased in the light phase. 相似文献
