The great tit (Parus major) has been considered to be the most typical example of an avian ring species. The terminal taxa of the ring (major and minor sectors) are supposed to be reproductively isolated in a zone of secondary contact in the middle Amur valley, Siberia. Our study combines molecular markers (cytochrome‐b), bioacoustic analyses and morphological characters to judge the ring species status of the great tit complex. Despite a notable percentage of intermediately coloured birds in the mixed population of middle Amur, a lack of mitochondrial introgression between the major and minor sectors and a small number of true hybrids among voucher specimens from this area suggest at least a partial reproductive barrier between both sectors. In contrast, variation of morphological and especially acoustic characters along the ring‐shaped area and the phylogenetic structure of the P. major group do not match the ring species concept. Bioacoustic and molecular data (cytochrome‐b sequences) reveal two large and closely related subspecies blocks, the sectors major and bokharensis in the Western Palaearctic and central Asia, and the sectors minor and cinereus in the Eastern Palaearctic and South‐east Asia, respectively. The two western sectors diverged only recently (0.5 Mya) and they were separated from the eastern group by Pleistocene events about 1.5 Mya. Songs from allopatric regions of the two subspecies blocks differ distinctly in frequency parameters and element composition. In the area of secondary contact, males of all phenotypes share the same frequency range of song, close to the range of the typical minor song. Hybrids and major males sing mixed repertoires of typical major and minor strophe types as well as mixed strophes. In contrast, phenotypic minor males display only pure minor strophes. Differences in mate choice and mating success based on repertoire size are believed to uphold the reproductive barrier between major and minor birds in the area of sympatry. Taxonomic consequences suggest three separate species in the Parus major complex: Parus major s.s. (including the very closely related bokharensis sector), Parus minor and Parus cinereus. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 86 , 153–174.

Summary We examined the effect of reproduction on growth in 33 genotypes of Plantago major and 14 genotypes of P. rugelii. These two herbaceous perennials have contrasting life histories; P. major reproduces at a smaller size, and allocates a larger proportion of its biomass to reproduction, than P. rugelii. The effect of reproduction on frowth was determined experimentally using photoperiod manipulations to control level of reproduction. The difference in growth between reproductive treatments was divided by the difference in capsule weight to produce a measure of reproductive cost per g of capsule for genotypes of the two species. In both species there was substantial variation among genotypes in the effect of reproduction on growth. Much of this variation could be correlated with differences among genotypes in the extent of reproductive investment and plant size. Cost in terms of reduction in growth per g of capsule increased with reproductive investment in P. rugelii, and with plant size in P. major. We suggest the differences between species in timing and extent of reproduction are related to the differences between species in effect of reproduction on growth. Plantago rugelii may reproduce to a lesser extent than P. major because cost per g of capsule in terms of reduced vegetative biomass, increases with reproductive output in the former species, but not in the latter. Similarly, P. major may reproduce earlier than P. rugelii because cost per g of capsule increases with plant size in P. major, but not in P. rugelii.

Penicillium citrinum Thom, isolated from the sclerotia of Sderotinia minor, was cultured in a broth of Czapek-Dox for 4 to 8 weeks. The filtrate obtained was incorporated into potato dextrose agar or Czapek-Dox agar at different concentrations (v/v). The amended media were tested for mycelial growth of S. minor and other pathogens. Mycelial growth of S. minor was completely inhibited on media amended with 20% (v/v) filtrate of P. citrinum, and considerable inhibition of S. minor occurred at 10 and 15% concentrations. Mycelial growth of S. major, Sclerotium rolfsii, Rhizoctonia solani (AG-4) was inhibited by similar concentrations of filtrate of P. citrinum. Inhibitor(s) in the filtrate were extracted with ethyl acetate and tentatively identified as citrinin. Citrinin was shown to be an active component in the filtrate against mycelial growth of S. minor, S. major and Sclerotium rolfsii.Cooperative investigation of U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service and Oklahoma State University. Seeds of the widespread weed Plantago major were collected from 10 European countries, as well as Trinidad and North America. The seed collections were from populations of two taxa which are ecologically rather than geographically separated and formally recognized as the subspecies Plantago major ssp. major and P.m. ssp. intermedia (also called P.m. ssp. pleiosperma). Eight polymorphic allozyme loci and 73 random-primed DNA fragments were scored, as well as 11 morphological characters. Complete concordance between morphological traits and genetic data provides evidence that these two taxa, although very similar, are distinct species. They are both widespread, they are broadly sympatric and capable of interbreeding. However, slight morphological and ecological differences coincide with genetic clustering of populations from widely separated locations. In addition, P. major and P. intermedia differ in their population structure: P. intermedia has greater genetic diversity among populations and less genetic variance within populations than P. major. We suggest that differences between the two species in their levels of selfing may explain the distinctive genetic structure of each species. We hypothesize a link between selfing rate and lifespan of the two taxa. P. major is characterized by lower genetic variation among populations, a higher rate of outcrossing, longer lifespan and production of fewer seeds per seed capsule. P. intermedia is more highly structured with much differentiation among populations, a higher rate of inbreeding and it often grows as an annual.

We studied the interpecific competition between 2 species of predatory aquatic bugs, Diplonychus japonicus and D. major by conducting a field experiment. We set up 3 types of experimental plots in the paddy fields where D. major predominated. The two plots contained single species of either D. japonicus or D. major, respectively, and one plot had both species in equal number. We compared the development and the reproductive performance between plots in each species. In D. japonicus, the number of eggs and early instar nymphs were significantly smaller in the plots containing both species than in the monospecific plots. However, the numbers of late instar nymphs and newly emerged adults were not significantly different between plots. The proportions of starved nymphs in both plots were larger than those in the D. japonicus's natural habitats. The final densities of adults in both plots were lower than those in the natural habitats. These results suggest that lower density of D. japonicus in these paddy fields is due to the lack of available food for nymphs rather than the effects of interspecific competition with D. major. In D. major, significant differences were not found in the number of eggs, each instar nymphs and adults. These results suggest that the effects of interspecific competition did not affect the reproductive performance of D. major.

Abstract The long-nosed potoroo (Potorous tridactylus), a medium-sized, ground-dwelling marsupial, inhabits the foothills and coastal forests of southeastern mainland Australia. Faecal analysis confirmed the mycophagous habit of P. tridactylus at a eucalypt forest site in East Gippsland, Victoria; in one month, the spores of 33 different fungi were identified. The majority of species (27) were hypogeal or subhypogeal gasteromycetes that form ectomycorrhizae with forest trees and shrubs, and included the widespread and common Mesophellia pachytrix. The possible role of mycophagy in establishment of eucalypt-fungal mycorrhizae was investigated in several ways. Fungal spores were viable after passage through the gut of P. tridactylus; application of spore-bearing faeces to seedlings of Eucalyptus sieberi and Eucalyptus globoidea grown in sterile soil produced ectomycorrhizae. Spores of M. pachythrix were among the most common spores in these faeces and some of the resulting ectomycorrhizae were of the type expected from M. pachythrix. In contrast, direct application of M. pachythrix spores from sporocarp tissue to seedlings produced no ectomycorrhizae. Ectomycorrhizae also were established on seedlings grown in unsterilized forest soil, indicating that soil-borne spores had been conditioned, either by passage through the gut of a mammal or some other means, for reaction with the roots of eucalypts. Addition of faeces improved root and shoot growth of seedlings, although we could not determine whether this was primarily due to the formation of ectomycorrhizae, the addition of nutrients in the faeces, or a combination of both. Potorous tridactylus may enhance the re-establishment of mycorrhizal colonies in logged and/or burned forest sites by dispersing in its faeces, the spores of mycorrhizal fungi from sporocarps consumed within the disturbed area, as well as spores from sporocarps eaten in adjacent undisturbed habitat. In performing this function, P. tridactylus may also aid in the recovery of regenerating silvertop ash-stringybark forests.

The performance of first‐generation hybrids determines to a large extent the long‐term outcome of hybridization in natural populations. F1 hybrids can facilitate further gene flow between the two parental species, especially in animal‐pollinated flowering plants. We studied the performance of reciprocal F1 hybrids between Rhinanthus minor and R. major, two hemiparasitic, annual, self‐compatible plant species, from seed germination to seed production under controlled conditions and in the field. We sowed seeds with known ancestry outdoors before winter and followed the complete life cycle until plant death in July the following season. Germination under laboratory conditions was much lower for the F1 hybrid formed on R. major compared with the reciprocal hybrid formed on R. minor, and this confirmed previous results from similar experiments. However, this difference was not found under field conditions, which seems to indicate that the experimental conditions used for germination in the laboratory are not representative for the germination behaviour of the hybrids under more natural conditions. The earlier interpretation that F1 hybrid seeds formed on R. major face intrinsic genetic incompatibilities therefore appears to be incorrect. Both F1 hybrids performed at least as well as and sometimes better than R. minor, which had a higher fitness than R. major in one of the two years in the greenhouse and in the field transplant experiment. The high fitness of the F1 hybrids confirms findings from naturally mixed populations, where F1 hybrids appear in the first year after the two species meet, which leads to extensive advanced‐hybrid formation and introgression in subsequent generations.

Summary Tupaiostrongylus major n. sp. and T. minor n. sp. which are co-parasites in Tupaia tana from Indonesia, are differentiated from the type (and only other) species, T. liei Dunn, 1963, by the presence of six and not five tubercles on the female tail and by the morphology of the distal points of the spicules. Two new species are distinguished from each other by body size, number of cuticular crests of the synlophe, and the shape of the distal points of the spicules.
The morphology of mandibular molars of the twoProconsulspecies,Proconsul majorandProconsul africanus, from the Tinderet region, Kenya was analyzed. While the molar size variability within the TinderetP. majorwas slightly greater than those of local African ape subspecies, the shape variability was comparable. Because the twoProconsulspecies show some differences in cusp areal proportions,P. majoris not just a largerP. africanusin molar morphology. Napak specimens are generally similar to the TinderetP. major.

We compared autotrophic growth of the dinoflagellate Karlodinium micrum (Leadbeater et Dodge) and the cryptophyte Storeatula major (Butcher ex Hill) at a range of growth irradiances (Eg). Our goal was to determine the physiological bases for differences in growth–irradiance relationships between these species. Maximum autotrophic growth rates of K. micrum and S. major were 0.5 and 1.5 div.·d?1, respectively. Growth rates were positively correlated with C‐specific photosynthetic performance (PPC, g C·g C?1·h?1) (r2=0.72). Cultures were grouped as light‐limited (LL) and high‐light (HL) treatments to allow interspecific comparisons of physiological properties that underlie the growth–irradiance relationships. Interspecific differences in the C‐specific light absorption rate (EaC, mol photons·g C?1·h?1) were observed only among HL acclimated cultures, and the realized quantum yield of C fixation (φC(real.), mol C·mol photons?1) did not differ significantly between species in either LL or HL treatments. The proportion of fixed C that was incorporated into new biomass was lower in K. micrum than S. major at each Eg, reflecting lower growth efficiency in K. micrum. Photoacclimation to HL in K. micrum involved a significant loss of cellular photosynthetic capacity (Pmaxcell), whereas in S. major, Pmaxcell was significantly higher in HL acclimated cells. We conclude that growth rate differences between K. micrum and S. major under LL conditions relate primarily to cell metabolism processes (i.e. growth efficiency) and that reduced chloroplast function, reflected in PPC and photosynthesis–irradiance curve acclimation in K. micrum, is also important under HL conditions.

To study possible adaptive mechanisms inbred lines from three populations of Plantago major from sites that were found to differ in P availability were compared. In a pot experiment the growth and P uptake either in the presence or absence of Glomus fasciculatum was determined. Under these P-limited conditions it was shown by partitioning the relative growth rate (RGR, in mg g-1 day-1) in the components root weight ratio (RWR, in groots gplant -1), specific P uptake rate (SPUR, in mol P groots -1 day-1), and P-efficiency (PEFF, in mg mol P-1), that the increase in RGR of mycorrhizal infected plants was related to an increase in SPUR, and a decrease in RWR and PEFF. P. major ssp. major had a lower RGR (related to a lower PEFF and SPUR) and a higher RWR than P. major ssp. pleiosperma. In a second experiment three inbred lines were compared upon P depletion in a nutrient solution. The P. major ssp. major line had a lower RGR and higher RWR, and a higher accumulation of P in the roots than the P. major ssp. pleiosperma lines under optimal growing conditions. There were no differences among the inbred lines in the relative contribution of inorganic P to the total P concentration in the shoot. The results are discussed in relation to the characteristics of the habitats of the investigated P. major populations.

Summary Establishment of Plantago lanceolata and P. major ssp major among grass was studied in a field experiment in which survival and selection on date of seedling emergence and plant size was investigated in relation to the vegetation structure. P. major — in contrast to P. lanceolata — was not able to establish itself in grass because of its lower competitive ability caused by later germination, smaller seedling size, and shorter leaves. In both species there was selection for early germination. For P. lanceolata a significant correlation was found between the strength of selection and the light climate, determined by the structure of the grass sward. Plants that germinated early were at an advantage because they were larger, especially the leaves, when compared with plants that germinated late. It seems likely that selection was mainly by competition for light. Contrary to expectation P. major-seedlings had a higher shade tolerance than those of P. lanceolata. The performance of both species is discussed in relation to their different life strategies.Grassland species research group publication no 142  相似文献

We compared the seasonal changes in population density and nymphal development at different water temperatures and under different food conditions between two giant water bugs, Diplonychus japonicus and D. major, in Okayama, Japan. D. japonicus produced 1–2 generations a year, while D. major was strictly inivoltine. The developmental velocity was higher in D. japonicus than in D. major. The thermal constant of D. japonicus was less than that of D. major. These results suggest that D. japonicus is adapted, to higher water temperature than D. major. In the field, D. japonicus preyed predominately on Lymnaeidae and Physidae snails, while D. major preyed on aquatic insects such as dragonfly nymphs.

The pollination biology of the nectarless orchid Pogonia minor was investigated in central Japan. The investigation revealed that the solitary flowers failed to attract pollinators, while high rates of fruit set were observed in the natural population. Comparable levels of fruit set were obtained in bagged, artificial self‐pollinated and artificial cross‐pollinated plants, indicating that the species is not pollinator‐limited for fruit set under natural conditions. Autonomous self‐pollination in P. minor resulted from a reduced rostellum, which allowed contact between the pollinia and the stigma. Self‐pollination is thought to be an adaptive response that provides reproductive assurance under conditions of pollinator limitation. Since pollen limitation is generally known to be frequent among deceptive orchids, strong pollen limitation is probably a driving force in the autonomous self‐pollination mechanism in the nectarless orchid P. minor.

Chloroplast DNA variation was studied within and among five Plantago species. We determined polymorphism by surveying 86% of the chloroplast genome using 9 or 11 restriction enzymes for intra or interspecific variation, respectively. All five species were polymorphic for both site and length mutations. The outcrossing P. lanceolata has six chloroplast haplotypes of which some were found in the Netherlands as well as in the United States. The highly selfing P. major had five haplotypes and Dutch and United States populations were differentiated from each other in cpDNA. Plantago species are highly differentiated from each other. Of 252 restriction-sites, 52% were variable among species. Most of this variation was localized in part of the large single copy region. We derived a molecular phylogeny of the five species from restriction-site variability using PAUP 3.0. P. coronopus and P. maritima form a group as do P. major and P. media. P. lanceolata is more distantly related to the other four species. In a consensus tree both P. major haplotypes and both P. media haplotypes were connected to one node.

Summary Fasting and fed metabolic rates were measured in three species of potoroine marsupials, the rufous rat-kangaroo (Aepyprymnus rufescens), the long-nosed potoroo (Potorous tridactylus) and the brush-tailed bettong (Bettongia penicillata). There were no significant differences among potoroine species in fasting metabolic rate. The lowest fasting heat production for each species was 11–20% less than the interspecific value of 295 kJ · kg-0.75 · day-1 for basal metabolism of mature, non-reproductive eutherian homeotherms. The respiratory quotient of all species was reduced significantly as starvation proceeded, but only for B. penicillata was there a significant effect of starvation duration on fasting heat production. The night-time activity of P. tridactylus and B. penicillata doubled their daytime fasting heat production; the corresponding increase for A. rufescens was only 25%. The calorimetric measurement of fed animals showed no differences in digestible energy or metabolisable energy between species. Nevertheless, P. tridactylus and B. penicillata produced more heat per unit metabolic body mass. The maintenance energy requirements (kJ · kg-0.75 · day-1) were 479, 494 and 345 for P. tridactylus, B. penicillata and A. rufescens, respectively. The net availability of metabolisable energy was about 0.70 in the three species. The combined heat production of fed female A. rufescens and their pouch young stayed relatively constant for the first two-thirds of pouch life, after which it rose sharply (20%) in response to the rapid growth of the young. Only during the last week of pouch life did the female enter negative energy balance. There was no indication that the metabolism of the female increased in response to the presence of a pouch young. The presence of pouch young did not alter the efficiency of utilisation of metabolisable energy. The daily energy requirement for maintenance was 0.83 MJ · day-1 or 0.36 MJ · kg-0.75 · day-1.Abbreviations DM dry matter - EB energy balance - FHP fasting heat production - FMR fasting metabolic rate - HP heat production - ME metabolisable energy - MEI metabolisable energy intake - MHP maintenance heat production - NAME net availability of metabolisable energy - RQ respiratory quotient - STP standard temperature and pressure Present address: Laboratory of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles, 900 Veteran Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 900024-1786, USA

Pollution-related changes in diets of two insectivorous passerines

Insectivorous birds living in polluted areas are not only exposed to pollutants but they may also be affected by changes in their invertebrate food. The populations of many invertebrate species are affected by environmental pollution and such changes may lead to differences in the diet of insectivorous birds. We examined nestling food quality (invertebrate composition and heavy metal levels) and breeding performance of two cavity-nesting passerines, the Great tit, Parus major, and the pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca, in an area with long-term heavy metal pollution by a copper smelter. There were no differences in feeding frequencies or the amount of food that parents provided to their nestlings between polluted and unpolluted sites, but food quality in a polluted area differed from that of the control area in both bird species. P. major took more beetles and variable “flying insects” and less caterpillars (of smaller size) and moths in the polluted area as compared to the unpolluted one. F. hypoleuca ate more beetles and larvae and less moths and spiders in the polluted area. Breeding success of P. major was better when the nestling diet contained a large proportion of caterpillars and the relationship was especially strong in the polluted area. On the contrary, F. hypoleuca broods succeeded equally well with variable diets. Our data suggest that a more opportunistic forager, F. hypoleuca, is less vulnerable to a changing invertebrate composition caused by human environmental impacts than a caterpillar specialist, P. major. In a heavy metal polluted area, F. hypoleuca seems to be more sensitive to a decreased amount of Ca rich food items (e.g. snails) while P. major suffers especially from the lack of carotenoid rich caterpillars. Our results emphasize the importance of secondary environmental changes, like food quality, in addition to direct impacts of pollutants.

The taxonomy of African black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) remains unresolved. Maintaining levels of genetic diversity and species rescue by reintroduction and restocking requires its resolution. We compared the sequences of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region for a total of 101 D. bicornis from three subspecies: D. b. minor, D. b. michaeli and D. b. bicornis. A single unique haplotype was found within the 65 D. b. minor samples from KwaZulu‐Natal (KZN) Province, South Africa, 55 of which came from Hluhluwe‐iMfolozi Game Park (HiP) and Mkuzi Game Reserve (MGR) source populations. However, six different haplotypes were represented in eleven D. b. minor samples from Zimbabwe. Similarly, published autosomal microsatellite data indicate low levels of diversity within the KZN D. b. minor populations. The low levels of mtDNA diversity within the KZN metapopulation point to the possible need for genetic supplementation. However, there is a need to determine whether the low levels of genetic variation within KZN D. b. minor are a result of the recent bottleneck or whether KZN historically always had low diversity.

Summary Rhinanthus minor (yellow-rattle) is a widespread hemiparasitic plant of grassland habitats throughout Great Britain. It is usually considered to be indicative of species-rich grassland, but in a survey of 14 habitats throughout Britain it was found that R. minor at the time of flowering normally occupied relatively low-diversity patches within areas of high diversity as determined by the number of species, Simpson's Index and the Shannon-Wiener Index. Following the death of adult plants of R. minor in the summer it was shown that the pattern of species diversity changed such that by the time R. minor germinated in the following spring the differences between the areas containing and not containing R. minor were much less distinct. A perturbation experiment in which R. minor was removed from four sites indicated that the effect of the removal of R. minor on the development of community structure over the next year was to increase species diversity on three of the sites and decrease it on the fourth. Those species which responded to the removal of R. minor by an increase in abundance were shown to be preferred hosts. All three lines of evidence point to the fact R. minor has a significant effect on the species diversity of the communities in which it grows by selectively parasitizing components of the flora and modifying the competitive relationships between plants. However, as the communities generally responded to the removal of R. minor by an increase in diversity and as the general survey indicated that R. minor is generally associated with areas of low diversity it would appear that the plants which are selectively parasitized are generally not the competitive dominants in the community.
