Populations of granivorous farmland birds have dramatically declined during recent decades in many European countries. Winter conditions and consequently, survival rates of farmland bird species during this critical period, are considered as one of the main causes of this negative trend. However, the importance of different habitat structures and connected food sources for successful overwintering in bird species has gained little attention so far in the Czech Republic. In this study we aimed to examine the role of habitat composition and food availability on winter distribution and abundance of three declining sedentary and granivorous bird species. During the winters 2009–2014, 149 villages in the Czech Republic were monitored for distribution and density of three farmland seed-eaters. House Sparrow was the most dominant species (88.6% of villages occupied; 4.32 ± 4.67 ind./100 m of transect), followed by Tree Sparrow (67.1% villages occupied; 1.83 ± 3.53 ind./100 m of transect) and Collared Dove (65.8% villages occupied; 0.72 ± 1.51 ind./100 m of transect). Occurrence of House and Tree Sparrow was significantly affected by the number of instances of poultry keeping. In both species, occupied villages showed a higher number of instances of poultry keeping. We did not find any such significant relationship for Collared Dove. Density of House Sparrow was significantly higher in villages with dairy farms, but we failed to find this relationship for Tree Sparrow and Collared Dove. Habitat preferences were similar for all three studied species. They positively responded to the proportion of shrubs/trees, the keeping of poultry, dairy farms and they avoided houses, arable land and grasslands. We conclude that poultry keepings and dairy farms can be important for studied species during the winter since they offer high food availability and good protection against predators. This suggestion is supported by the fact that long-term population decline has coincided with a long-term reduction in the keeping of poultry and dairy farms in the Czech Republic during the last 50 years.  相似文献

The present study investigates the feasibility in goats of an avoidance distance (AD) behaviour test set-up for cattle, and compares the results in the two species to assess the suitability of the test for on-farm welfare evaluation in goat farms. The tests were performed on 324 lactating cows (170 in small farms and 154 in large farms) and 271 lactating goats (108 in small farms and 163 in large farms), housed in free stall farms (12 dairy cattle and 17 dairy goat farms) in the Province of Sondrio, Northern Italy, following a protocol validated for dairy cows in the Welfare Quality® project. After the assessors were adequately trained, this test was relatively easy to perform and no major difficulties were faced in either species. Goats exhibited a higher level of confidence with humans, as showed by lower AD (goats: 68.60 ± 4.98 cm; cows: 71.36 ± 4.37 cm; p < 0.10) and higher frequency of contacts (AD = 0) (goats: 45.8%; cows: 31.2%; p < 0.001).Farm size significantly affected AD values (lower in small farms) and frequency of contacts (higher in small farms) in goats, but not in cows. This was probably due to the less marked management difference between large and small farms of cattle than those of goats. The AD test seems feasible in goats; however, the experimenter contacted nearly half of the goats. To improve the sensitivity, a further level – represented by the possibility of gently stroking the goat's head after the contact – may be included in the test in addition to contact.  相似文献

We examine the evolution of adult female heights in twelve Latin American countries during the second half of the twentieth century based on demographic health surveys and related surveys compiled from national and international organizations. Only countries with more than one survey were included, allowing us to cross-examine surveys and correct for biases. We first show that average height varies significantly according to location, from 148.3 cm in Guatemala to 158.8 cm in Haiti. The evolution of heights over these decades behaves like indicators of human development, showing a steady increase of 2.6 cm from the 1950s to the 1990s. Such gains compare favorably to other developing regions of the world, but not so much with recently developed countries. Height gains were not evenly distributed in the region, however. Countries that achieved higher levels of income, such as Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, gained on average 0.9 cm per decade, while countries with shrinking economies, such as Haiti and Guatemala, only gained 0.25 cm per decade.  相似文献

Afrotropical ant-following birds are vulnerable to forest loss and disturbance, but critical habitat thresholds regarding their abundance and species richness in human-dominated landscapes, including industrial oil palm plantations, have never been assessed. We measured forest cover through Landsat imagery and recorded species richness and relative abundance of 20 ant-following birds in 48 plots of 1-km2, covering three landscapes of Southwest Cameroon: Korup National Park, smallholder agroforestry areas (with farms embedded in forest), and an industrial oil palm plantation. We evaluated differences in encounter frequency and species richness among landscapes, and the presence of critical thresholds through enhanced adaptive regression through hinges. All species were detected in Korup National Park and the agroforestry landscape, which had similar forest cover (>85%). Only nine species were found in the oil palm plantation (forest cover = 10.3 ± 3.3%). At the 1-km2 scale, the number of species and bird encounters were comparable in agroforests and the protected area: mean species richness ranged from 12.2 ± 0.6 in the park and 12.2 ± 0.6 in the agroforestry matrix to 1.0 ± 0.4 in the industrial oil palm plantation; whereas encounters decreased from 34.4 ± 3.2 to 26.1 ± 2.9 and 1.3 ± 0.4, respectively. Bird encounters decreased linearly with decreasing forest cover, down to an extinction threshold identified at 24% forest cover. Species richness declined linearly by ca. one species per 7.4% forest cover lost. We identified an extinction threshold at 52% forest cover for the most sensitive species (Criniger chloronotus, Dicrurus atripennis, and Neocossyphus poensis). Our results show that substantial proportions of forests are required to sustain complete ant-following bird assemblages in Afrotropical landscapes and confirm the high sensitivity of this bird guild to deforestation after industrial oil palm development. Securing both forest biodiversity and food production in an Afrotropical production landscape may be best attained through a combination of protected areas and wildlife-friendly agroforestry.  相似文献

An ecological risk assessment, based on life-history and behavioural attributes of 273 bird taxa, was used to identify which of those taxa are at high risk from negative interactions with offshore wind farms in Australia. The marine area of Australia was divided by state/territory boundaries perpendicular to the coast into eight regions, with Western Australia further divided into north and south, and a Bass Strait region bounded by the Victoria coast and the north coast of Tasmania. These regions were subdivided into coastal, inshore and offshore sub-regions and a risk summary for all bird taxa occurring in each of these sub-regions produced. In coastal and inshore sub-regions of Bass Strait, South Australia and Tasmania, the species with the highest risk scores were Orange-bellied Parrot Neophema chrysogaster, Furneaux White-fronted Tern Sterna striata incerta, Swift Parrot Lathamus discolor, Shy Albatross Thalassarche cauta, Far Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis and Anadyr Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica anadyrensis. In offshore sub-regions in southern Australia, the highest risk species were all albatrosses, comprising Northern Royal Diomedea sanfordi, Eastern Antipodean D. antipodensis antipodensis, Gibson's D. antipodensis gibsoni, Wandering D. exulans, Amsterdam D. amsterdamensis and Grey-headed Albatross T. chrysostoma. Compared to onshore installations, there are logistical challenges to quantifying the potential and realized impacts of offshore wind farms that require different approaches to data collection and analyses. The extensive development of offshore wind farms in the Northern Hemisphere provides examples of best and emerging approaches to quantify and mitigate negative impacts of offshore wind farms that can be applied in an Australian context. Despite differences in the species involved, the same approaches to identifying high-risk species and to the monitoring and mitigation of negative impacts should be applied in a coordinated, regional-scale approach to the development of offshore wind farms in Australia.  相似文献

A new biomass index for monitoring the impact of marine fish cage farming on the benthic environment was evaluated at seven commercial fish farms in the eastern Mediterranean. At each farm, stations near and further away from the cages were sampled for macrofauna and geochemical variables during July 2001, and March and October 2002. Benthic samples were sequentially sieved through 1.0 and 0.5 mm mesh screens and a biomass fractionation index (BFI) was estimated as follows: biomass having passed through 1.0 mm and retained on 0.5 mm sieve only/total biomass (biomass retained on 1.0 mm + 0.5 mm sieve). BFI was quantitatively assessed and compared with the geochemical faunistic and management practice data. BFI was found to decrease consistently with distance from fish cages and particularly after 10 m from the edge of the cages. At all farms, BFI was found to be significantly correlated with distance, redox potential and organic carbon. Multiple regression analysis showed that BFI incorporates various components of sediment geochemistry (sediment grain size and total organic carbon) as well as distance and feeding rates. Although BFI needs to be further tested in different geographic locations and under different management practices, the results seem to be promising for long-term monitoring programmes since it provides a simple and inexpensive solution for assessing the effects of benthic organic enrichment due to fish farm activities.  相似文献

Birds can be used as indicators to monitor success of programs encouraging prairie landowners to increase biodiversity. Using a case study from Alberta, Canada, this paper compares bird diversity measures at the farm scale and examines their consistency across different habitat types to test for design, output, and end use validation. Based on 2005 point count data (two types) from 178 sites at 22 farms, we calculated bird species richness, abundance, Shannon index, and Inverse Simpson index. The 50 m radius data produced species richness and abundance measures about half the size as those produced by the unlimited radius data. The bird diversity measures were consistent across habitat types. The 50 m radius data showed differences among 3–5 habitat types, whereas the unlimited radius data showed differences between only two habitat types. Using any bird diversity measure, the wetland/riparian habitat scored highest, followed by homestead, upland forest, native prairie, tame pasture, and cultivated land habitats.Bird monitoring methods should favor fixed over unlimited radius point counts, because of the former's greater discriminating ability. Given that diversity measures are consistent across habitats and are highly correlated, the species richness measure, which is simple and easy to understand, can be used in conversations with landowners and policy-makers.  相似文献

Dairy production across the world contributes to environmental impacts such as eutrophication, acidification, loss of biodiversity, and use of resources, such as land, fossil energy and water. Benchmarking the environmental performance of farms can help to reduce these environmental impacts and improve resource use efficiency. Indicators to quantify and benchmark environmental performances are generally derived from a nutrient balance (NB) or a life cycle assessment (LCA). An NB is relatively easy to quantify, whereas an LCA provides more detailed insight into the type of losses and associated environmental impacts. In this study, we explored correlations between NB and LCA indicators, in order to identify an effective set of indicators that can be used as a proxy for benchmarking the environmental performance of dairy farms. We selected 55 specialised dairy farms from western European countries and determined their environmental performance based on eight commonly used NB and LCA indicators from cradle-to-farm gate. Indicators included N surplus, P surplus, land use, fossil energy use, global warming potential (GWP), acidification potential (AP), freshwater eutrophication potential (FEP) and marine eutrophication potential (MEP) for 2010. All indicators are expressed per kg of fat-and-protein-corrected milk. Pearson and Spearman Rho’s correlation analyses were performed to determine the correlations between the indicators. Subsequently, multiple regression and canonical correlation analyses were performed to select the set of indicators to be used as a proxy. Results show that the set of selected indicator, including N surplus, P surplus, energy use and land use, is strongly correlated with the eliminated set of indicators, including FEP (r = 0.95), MEP (r = 0.91), GWP (r = 0. 83) and AP (r = 0.79). The canonical correlation between the two sets is high as well (r = 0.97). Therefore, N surplus, P surplus, energy use and land use can be used as a proxy to benchmark the environmental performance of dairy farms, also representing GWP, AP, FEP and MEP. The set of selected indicators can be monitored and collected in a time and cost-effective way, and can be interpreted easily by decision makers. Other important environmental impacts, such as biodiversity and water use, however, should not be overlooked.  相似文献

As part of the energy transition, the French government is planning the construction of three offshore wind farms in Normandy (Bay of Seine and eastern part of the English Channel, north-western France) in the next years. These offshore wind farms will be integrated into an ecosystem already facing multiple anthropogenic disturbances such as maritime transport, fisheries, oyster and mussel farming, and sediment dredging. Currently no integrated, ecosystem-based study on the effects of the construction and exploitation of offshore wind farms exists, where biological approaches generally focused on the conservation of some valuable species or groups of species. Complementary trophic web modelling tools were applied to the Bay of Seine ecosystem (to the 50 km2 area covered by the wind farm) to analyse the potential impacts of benthos and fish aggregation caused by the introduction of additional hard substrates from the piles and the turbine scour protections. An Ecopath ecosystem model composed of 37 compartments, from phytoplankton to seabirds, was built to describe the situation “before” the construction of the wind farm. Then, an Ecosim projection over 30 years was performed after increasing the biomass of targeted benthic and fish compartments. Ecological Network Analysis (ENA) indices were calculated for the two periods, “before” and “after”, to compare network functioning and the overall structural properties of the food web. Our main results showed (1) that the total ecosystem activity, the overall system omnivory (proportion of generalist feeders), and the recycling increased after the construction of the wind farm; (2) that higher trophic levels such as piscivorous fish species, marine mammals, and seabirds responded positively to the aggregation of biomass on piles and turbine scour protections; and (3) a change in keystone groups after the construction towards more structuring and dominant compartments. Nonetheless, these changes could be considered as limited impacts of the wind farm installation on this coastal trophic web structure and functioning.  相似文献

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have posed a serious threat to the aquaculture and fisheries industries in recent years, especially in Asia. During 1998 there were several particularly serious blooms in the coastal waters of south China, which caused a serious damage to aquaculture. We report a massive dinoflagellate bloom near the mouth of Pearl River in November 1998 with analyses of data from both in situ sea water measurements and satellites. A multi-parameter environmental mapping system was used to obtain real-time measurements of water quality properties and wind data through the algal bloom area, which allow us to compare water measurements from inside and outside of the bloom areas. This bloom with high concentrations of algal cells was evident as a series of red colored parallel bands of surface water that were 100–300 m long and 10–30 m wide with a total area of about 20–30 km2 by visual. The algal density reached 3.8×107 cells l−1 and the surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration was high. The algal species has been identified as Gymnodinium cf. catenatum Graham. The water column in the bloom area was stratified, where the surface temperature was 24–25 °C, the salinity was 18–20%, and the northern wind was about 3–4 m s−1 in the bloom area. The SeaWiFS image has shown high Chl-a area coinciding with the bloom area. The sea surface temperature (SST) image of the Pearl River estuary combined with the in situ measurements indicated that the bloom occurred along a mixing front between cooler lower salinity river water and warmer higher saline South China Sea (SCS) water.  相似文献

Species abundance counts from 46 surface sediment samples have been used to develop transfer functions for the reconstruction of salinity, and dissolved nitrates in the eastern Indian Ocean. Application of the functions to samples from deep-sea core FR10/95-GC17 [22° 07.74′ S, 113° 30.11′ E] shows that, offshore North West Cape, Western Australia, regional changes in salinity and the availability of dissolved nitrates were more significant in determining radiolarian species distributions over the last 35 ka than temperature. In addition, variations in the reconstructed data have been shown to reflect changes in marine currents and terrestrial rainfall over the study period.  相似文献

Man made ecosystems of dry lands are key habitats due to their ecological characteristics to survey biodiversity. This study investigated bird diversity in three oases of the Northern Algerian Sahara (i.e., Biskra in 2006, Oued Souf in 2008 and Ouargla in 2009), by using the spot-mapping method. Bird density “D” (pairs/10 ha), species richness “S” (number species), diversity (Shannon index) “H′” (in bits), and evenness “E” varied from one oasis to another (Biskra: D = 98.5, S = 47, H′ = 4.49, E = 0.81; Oued Souf: D = 96, S = 33, H′ = 3.9, E = 0.77; Ouargla: D = 91.5, S = 44, H′ = 4.39, E = 0.80). Differences in bird diversity between the monitored palm groves are due to the ecological characteristics of each environment. Documented literature outlined close taxonomic similarities between bird assemblages of the study area with many Northern Saharan oases. The Hybrid Sparrow Passer domesticus x Passer. hispaniolensis and some Columbidae species including Columba livia, Streptopelia turtur, Streptopelia senegalensis, and Streptopelia decaocto were the abundant species throughout surveyed oases in which they represented more than half (55.6%) of the sum of species densities (D = 286 pairs/10 ha). These synthropic species have known a huge expansion of their distribution range throughout Algerian oases. The correspondence analysis allowed the aggregation of both families and species into oasis they belong to. One-way ANOVA was tested to analyse variations of both family and species densities between studied oases. The ANOVA revealed there was no significant variation either in family densities (p = 0.937) or in bird densities (p = 0.622) between the surveyed oases because of the small size of bird populations.  相似文献

Lama guanicoe guanicoe is the guanaco subspecies located in the Argentinean Patagonia. It is of particular interest to characterize these populations as it is a native species and a high quality fibre production genetical resource. With the aim of describing phenotipically Lama guanicoe guanicoe populations, 262 specimens were sampled. The animals came from four different ecological regions, both wild and bred in captivity, from 5 ranches. Three age classes were established: calves (0–1 year), yearlings (1–2 years) and adults (more than 2 years). Morphometric variables measured were: body length (BL), thoracic depth (TD), half thoracic perimeter (HTP), head length (HL), shin length (ShL) and metacarpal circumference (MC). Fleece samples were evaluated on two ranches (n = 115) for: fleece total weight (FTW) and mean diameter of down (MDFD). Relationships between variables were studied and differences between morphostructures considering sex, age and ranch were analyzed. Age was the most important differencing factor (p < 0.05) for all morphometric traits (except for the ShL between yearlings and adults). Calves had finer MDFD (14.2 ± 0.6 μm) and less FTW (159 ± 47 g) than yearlings (15 ± 5.8 μm and 254 ± 57 g). Sexual dimorphism was not found in calves nor in yearlings for any of the morphometric characters considered. Adult females presented greater significant values (p < 0.05) for TD (42.7 ± 2.1 cm) and HTP (55.4 ± 3.2 cm) than males (41.6 ± 2.3 cm and 53 ± 2.9 cm, respectively). Only calf males presented higher significant values than females for the FTW (169 ± 42 g and 147 ± 51 g, respectively). FTW and MDFD were positively correlated between them (0.42) and with the thoracic measures (TD and HTP), these data imply an inverse relationship between quality and quantity of the fleece and suggest that the thoracic variables are good indicators of the fleece animal production in these Patagonian populations.  相似文献

The estimation of soil moisture by using the backscattering coefficient of radar in a mountainous region is a challenging task due to the complex topography, which impacts the distribution of soil moisture and changes the backscattering coefficient. Complicated terrain can disturb empirical moisture estimation models, thereby, the resulting estimates of soil moisture are very unlikely reliable. This article proposed an innovative way of integration of the topographic wetness index (TWI) and the backscattering coefficient of soil obtained from the TerraSAR-X image, which improves the accuracy of measurement of the soil moisture. The standard estimation error and the coefficient of determination from the model were used to evaluate the performance of TWI. Our results show that the standard estimation error was decreased from: (1) 4.0% to 3.3% cm3 cm−3 at a depth of 5 cm and (2) 4.5% to 3.9% cm3 cm−3 at a depth of 10 cm. The most reliable estimation was observed at a depth of 5 cm, when it was compared with those of 0–5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm. The TWI from the digital elevation model (DEM) is useful as a constraint condition for modeling work. This article concludes that the integration of the backscattering coefficient of soil with TWI can significantly reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of soil moisture in a mountainous region.  相似文献

Species with specialized resource use can display strong spatial heterogeneity in abundance according to the availability of their preferred habitats. If these preferences shift with ontogeny, then a wide range of habitats may need to be protected in order to support both adult populations and their replenishment. We explored whether microhabitat selectivity interacts with habitat availability to provide an effective suite of indicators for regional fish abundance and replenishment, using offshore rocky reefs in south-eastern Australia as a case study. We examined generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) in a full subsets approach to infer the best predictors for adult and juvenile fish density in four diverse families (Labridae, Odacidae, Pomacentridae, Serranidae), based on rapid underwater visual surveys across transects (⿼500 m2), wave exposures (0.3⿿1 km), and sites (0.3⿿48 km). We then examined whether these regional fish-habitat models aligned with the microhabitat electivity of individuals (at scale of <1 m2). Microhabitat selection by reef fishes at the local scale underpinned the most effective habitat indicators for regional heterogeneity in fish abundance, and pointed to critical nursery habitats that support hotspots of juvenile recruitment. Strong species-habitat relationships, such as these, can be combined with broad-scale habitat mapping to assess the potential carrying capacity of focal areas, spatial management zone placements, and nursery habitats that warrant special protection. A number of emerging threats to these key habitat types indicates an urgent need for habitat-based protection and monitoring as a key part of holistic marine ecosystem conservation and management.  相似文献

Quantification of the mechanical properties of liposomes is critical in helping to predict their behavior during various applications such as targeted drug delivery, response to mechanical characterization or their interactions with isolated cytoskeletal elements. A numerical implementation of the Evans aspiration technique, and an image processing algorithm for measuring deformation of spherical DOPC:DOPS liposomes is presented. Liposomes were aspirated to pressures of ?10 mmHg (~?1300 Pa). The area expansion and Young's moduli of the liposomes were found to be 0.067 N m?1 (67 ± 4 dyn/cm) and 15 ± 1 MPa.  相似文献

Secular changes in height have been observed in many regions of Poland using cross-sectional data; however, data from four nationally representative surveys conducted from 1955 to 1988 have only been partially analyzed. Dramatic social and economic transitions during this 33 year period provide a unique opportunity to understand changes in growth within this historic context. We analyzed the changes in height of boys, aged 7–18 years, from surveys conducted in 1955, 1966, 1978 and 1988.Data for height were converted to Z-scores using the LMS method and the 2000 National Center for Health Statistics reference. In each consecutive survey year, boys at all ages were significantly taller than the same aged boys from the previous survey year, with mean height increases of a 2.35 cm, 3.43 cm and 1.47 cm between 1955 and 1966, 1966 and 1978 and 1978 and 1988, respectively. There were significant declines with age in height Z-scores from 7 to 14 years of age, followed by improvements relative to the reference between 14 and 18 years of age. The decline in Z-scores may be partially explained by an effect of delayed maturation. However, historic context also supports that some birth cohorts likely experienced a more adverse environment during early childhood than did other birth cohorts.  相似文献

Quantifying the likely effects of offshore wind farms on wildlife is fundamental before permission for development can be granted by any Determining Authority. The effects on marine top predators from displacement from important habitat are key concerns during offshore wind farm construction and operation. In this respect, we present evidence for no significant displacement from a UK offshore wind farm for two broadly distributed species of conservation concern: common guillemot (Uria aalge) and harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Data were collected during boat‐based line transect surveys across a 360 km2 study area that included the Robin Rigg offshore wind farm. Surveys were conducted over 10 years across the preconstruction, construction, and operational phases of the development. Changes in guillemot and harbor porpoise abundance and distribution in response to offshore wind farm construction and operation were estimated using generalized mixed models to test for evidence of displacement. Both common guillemot and harbor porpoise were present across the Robin Rigg study area throughout all three development phases. There was a significant reduction in relative harbor porpoise abundance both within and surrounding the Robin Rigg offshore wind farm during construction, but no significant difference was detected between the preconstruction and operational phases. Relative common guillemot abundance remained similar within the Robin Rigg offshore wind farm across all development phases. Offshore wind farms have the potential to negatively affect wildlife, but further evidence regarding the magnitude of effect is needed. The empirical data presented here for two marine top predators provide a valuable addition to the evidence base, allowing future decision making to be improved by reducing the uncertainty of displacement effects and increasing the accuracy of impact assessments.  相似文献

The ability to carry out systematic, accurate and repeatable vegetation surveys is an essential part of long-term scientific studies into ecosystem biodiversity and functioning. However, current widely used traditional survey techniques such as destructive harvests, pin frame quadrats and visual cover estimates can be very time consuming and are prone to subjective variations. We investigated the use of digital image techniques as an alternative way of recording vegetation cover to plant functional type level on a peatland ecosystem. Using an established plant manipulation experimental site at Moor House NNR (an Environmental Change Network site), we compared visual cover estimates of peatland vegetation with cover estimates using digital image classification methods, from 0.5 m × 0.5 m field plots. Our results show that digital image classification of photographs taken with a standard digital camera can be used successfully to estimate dwarf-shrub and graminoid vegetation cover at a comparable level to field visual cover estimates, although the methods were less effective for lower plants such as mosses and lichens. Our study illustrates the novel application of digital image techniques to provide a new way of measuring and monitoring peatland vegetation to the plant functional group level, which is less vulnerable to surveyor bias than are visual field surveys. Furthermore, as such digital techniques are highly repeatable, we suggest that they have potential for use in long-term monitoring studies, at both plot and landscape scales.  相似文献
