Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) exposed to a short-day photoperiod generally respond with a syndrome of physiological and behavioral changes, such as body weight loss and molt to a white pelage. The extent of the short-day-induced responses differs among individuals. Furthermore, some hamsters show no photoresponse. In this study, we sought to determine whether variation in the photoresponse would be associated with circadian function: whether phase angle or free-running period (tau) would differ between responsive and nonresponsive hamsters; and whether changes in these circadian characters would correlate with the extent of weight loss and molt (and the timing of molt onset) in photoresponsive hamsters. Adult hamsters were kept in a short-day photoperiod (9 hr light, 15 hr dark) for 14 weeks, during which time body weight and molt were measured biweekly. Hamsters were then transferred to cages equipped with running wheels; we measured the phase angle of activity onset under a short-day photoperiod and tau in constant dark. Hamsters exhibiting a short-day-induced molt had a significantly shorter tau and a less negative phase angle than nonmolting animals. Hamsters that exhibited weight loss also had a significantly less negative phase angle, but no difference in tau. No significant Pearson's or Spearman's correlation coefficients were found between extent (or timing) of the photoresponse and the circadian characters in responsive hamsters. Although these results indicate that threshold for photoresponsiveness is related to circadian function, the extent (and timing) of the photoresponse may not be.  相似文献

The Djungarian hamster generally responds to a short-day photoperiod with a complex syndrome of physiological and behavioral changes; however, not all hamsters are photoresponsive. The phenotypic difference is, in part, genetically determined. Parent-offspring regression on a number of continuous and discontinuous measures indicated significant heritability for photoresponsiveness. Four generations of replicated bidirectional selection on a photoresponse index (PI) resulted in significant shifts in the percentage of responsive hamsters, although the average PI of responsive individuals was not significantly changed. Eight estimates of heritability ranged from 0.20 to 0.52. We hypothesize that the circadian system is responsible for the occurrence of the photoresponse, but that the extent of photoresponse is controlled by a separate functional system.  相似文献

Wild populations of Peromyscus are often composed of individuals that vary greatly in their reproductive response to photoperiod. A population of white-footed mice (P. leucopus) from Michigan (43 degrees N) was subjected to mass selection in the laboratory both for and against reproductive photoresponsiveness for four generations. The first generation of selection yielded one line of mice in which about 80% of the individuals were classified as reproductively photoresponsive (i.e., with undeveloped reproductive tracts when reared in short days, 8L: 16D) and another in which only about 20% were reproductively photoresponsive. Some and perhaps most of this difference was accounted for by changes in degree of responsiveness to photoperiod rather than by alterations in the proportion of discrete responsive vs. unresponsive phenotypes. Alteration of critical day length was not a factor. Three more generations of selection failed to change the proportions noted above significantly. Although the genetic control of reproductive photoresponsiveness is undoubtedly complex, a single variable locus may be responsible for much of the heritable variation present in this population. These results also suggest that natural populations contain genetically determined phenotypes that are intermediate between absolutely photoresponsive and absolutely unresponsive. The factors that might promote maintenance of heterogeneity of reproductive photoresponsiveness in a wild population of rodents are considered.  相似文献

In laboratory-bred rodent populations, intraspecific variation in circadian system organization is a known cause of individual variation in reproductive photoresponsiveness. The authors sought to determine whether circadian system variation accounted for individual variation in reproductive photoresponsiveness in a single, highly genetically variable population of Peromyscus leucopus recently derived from the wild. Running-wheel activity patterns of male and female mice, aged 70 to 90 days, from artificially selected lines of reproductively photoresponsive (R) and nonresponsive (NR) lines were monitored under short-day photoperiod (8 h light, 16 h dark), long-day photoperiod (16 h light, 8 h dark), and constant darkness (DD). NR mice displayed a significantly longer mean free-running period (24.08 h) in DD compared with R mice (23.75 h), due in large part to a difference between NR and R females (24.25 h vs. 23.74 h, respectively). All other entrainment characteristics (alpha, phase angle of activity) under short days, long days, and DD were similar between R and NR mice. Variation in free-running period and entrainment characteristics has been shown to affect photoresponsiveness in other rodent species by altering the manner in which the circadian system interprets short days. To determine whether variation in photoresponsiveness in P. leucopus is due to differences in free-running period instead of variation downstream from the central circadian clock in the pathway controlling photoresponsiveness, the authors exposed young R and NR mice to DD and measured the effect on reproductive organ development. If variation in free-running period affected how the circadian system of mice interpreted short days, then both R and NR mice exposed to DD should have exhibited a delay in gonadal development. Only R mice exhibited pubertal delay in DD. NR mice exhibited large paired testes, paired seminal vesicles, paired ovaries, and uterine weight typical of mice nonresponsive to short days, whereas R mice exhibited reproductive organ weight typical of mice responsive to short days. These data suggest that despite significant differences in free-running period between R and NR mice, individual variation in photoresponsiveness is not due to differences in how the circadian systems of R and NR mice interpret the LD cycle.  相似文献

Summary A method for superficial pinealectomy of the adult white-footed mouse,Peromyscus leucopus, is presented. Histological examination of the brain of pinealectomized mice showed that the deep pineal gland was left intact. The survival rate of pinealectomized mice was 80%. Pinealectomized mice were exposed to a short day photoperiod (8L:16D) at 15°C for 7 weeks. After this time male mice maintained active gonads with a testicular index (TI, testis width×length/body weight) of 2.0±0.1. Testis weight was 202±35 mg, and the seminiferous tubules contained abundant spermatozoa (spermatogenic index [SI]=4.5±0.2). Sham operated animals had regressed testes. TI was 1.2±0.2, testis weight was 97±26 mg, and the SI was 2.7±0.7 (allP<0.05 relative to pinealectomized mice). Pinealectomized females were reproductively competent in that all of the mice had a perforate vagina, the reproductive tract weight (vagina, uterus, oviducts, and ovaries) was 111±15 mg, and the ovaries from each animal contained preovulatory follicles. Sham operated mice had an imperforate vagina, reproductive tract weights were 34±5 mg, and in only 1 out of 5 mice did the ovaries contain a preovulatory follicle (allP<0.05). The weight of the lipid-free interscapular brown fat was 28% less in pinealectomized mice relative to sham operated animals (P<0.01). These results support the role of the pineal gland as regulator of short day, cold induced reproductive regression and brown fat hypertrophy.  相似文献

Synopsis Growth, gonadosomatic index and plasma steroid profiles in male ayu,Plecoglossus altivelis, cultured under short/long photoperiods and cool/warm temperatures were determined. Juvenile males were assigned to each of four different photoperiod/temperature regimes (16 L/18°C, 16 L/24°C, 8 L/18°C and 8 L/24°C) at random. Fish were killed and examined bi-weekly over the following 16 weeks. Mean body weight in the 16 L/18°C treated fish was the highest among four treated groups. No significant differences between body weights of the 16 L/24°C, 8 L/18°C and 8 L/24°C treated groups were observed. Ayu in the 8 L/18°C treated group had the highest values of gonadosomatic index, plasma testosterone (T) and 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OH P). No significant differences of plasma E2 were observed among the treated groups. In the 8L/18°C and 8L/24°C groups, peak levels of 17-OH P occurred after 12 and 14 weeks of treatment, respectively. No peak levels of plasma T and 17-OH P were observed in 16 L/18°C or 16 L/24°C treated ayu. Spermiation occurred only in ayu with 8 L/18°C treatment. The data suggest that testicular development in ayu is temperature and photoperiod dependent: short photoperiod and cool temperature favour gonadal development.  相似文献

Summary Garden warblers (Sylvia borin) are migrating European passerines that spend the winter in tropical Africa. To investigate how photoperiod controls the annual cycles of reproduction, molt and migration, garden warblers were exposed to photoperiodic changes simulating those experienced by conspecifics with an equatorial wintering area. At three different times groups of birds were moved from a constant equatorial photoperiod of 12.8 h to a 15-h photoperiod: group 1 on November 19, group 2 on February 24, and group 3 on April 12. In all birds the changes in body weight, nocturnal migratory restlessness, testicular width or diameter of the largest oocyte, and plasma LH concentrations were determined. In addition, the birds were examined for molt. In all birds of groups 2 and 3 the transfer to long photoperiods induced a gonadal cycle associated with spring migratory restlessness and, in the group 3 birds, an increase in LH. In group 1 only few birds showed marginal gonadal responses and the gonadal cycles of the group 2 birds were less pronounced than those of group 3. The results suggest that the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis was refractory to stimulation by long photoperiods in autumn but, later in the season, became responsive to the same long photoperiods. Unlike the situation in other temperate zone birds, the transition from the photorefractory to the photosensitive state seems to be a gradual process which develops spontaneously and with the appropriate temporal characteristics in the absence of photoperiodic change.Abbreviation LH luteinizing hormone  相似文献

Objective: Collared lemmings, Dicrostonyx groenlandicus, show rapid changes in body mass on a seasonal basis. The objective of this study was to measure longitudinal changes in body composition in animals undergoing photoperiod-induced weight gain and loss using DXA. Research Methods and Procedures: Adult, female collared lemmings exposed to either long (LD; 22 hours light/2 hours dark) or short (SD; 8 hours light/16 hours dark) photoperiods were anesthetized, and DXA was used to determine fat mass, lean tissue mass (LTM), total-body bone mineral content, and total-bone mineral density. After a baseline scan, one-half of the animals were transferred to the alternate photoperiod (SD-LD, weight loss; LD-SD, weight gain) and one-half remained on the same photoperiod (controls; SD-SD, LD-LD). Body composition was determined by DXA after 4 and 8 weeks. Animals were killed, and body composition was determined by carcass analysis. DXA-derived data were validated by comparing with carcass analysis. Results: Body composition by DXA was highly related to body composition measured by chemical analysis, thereby justifying the use of DXA. Lemmings in the SD-LD group lost weight, and this was reflected in measurable losses of fat and LTM. Lemmings in the LD-SD group gained weight, which was shown by measurable increases in fat, LTM and total-body bone mineral content. Discussion: Comparison of body composition determined by DXA to that by chemical extraction revealed that DXA is useful for measuring body composition. The longitudinal analysis revealed that collared lemmings undergo rapid changes in body composition when exposed to changes in photoperiod.  相似文献

Summary Cutaneous aquatic gas exchange and pulmonary gas exchange have been compared in an aquatic snakeAchrochordus javanicus and the terrestrial snakeConstrictor constrictor.Gas exchange was measured by closed respirometry with the snakes in air and in water with access to air. Frequency of air breathing, tidal volumes and total lung volumes were also compared in the two species. All measurements were done at 20–22 ° C.The aquaticAchrochordus showed long periods of apnea in submerged condition interrupted by short periods of breathing activity at the surface. Average frequency of air breathing activity was 2.6 times per hour. Breathing in constrictor was more frequent but irregular with an average frequency of 143 breaths per hour.Total lung volume was 66±31 ml/kg body weight and 72.5±59 ml/kg body weight inAchrochordus andConstrictor, respectively. Tidal volumes were 41.5±4.4 ml/kg body weight and 29.5±14.8 ml/kg body weight, largest inAchrochordus. Constrictor had the highest total O2 uptake ( ) correlating with a higher activity. Total gas exchange ratio (R E ) was 0.69 forConstrictor and 0.77 forAchrochordus. InConstrictor air breathing accounted for 97% of the total whereas 21% of the CO2 exchange was aquatic. Corresponding figures forAchrochordus were 92% of total by air breathing with as much as 33% of the CO2 elimination as aquatic gas exchange. The results demonstrate that the trend among early air breathing vertebrates (fishes and amphibians) of a conservative evolution of CO2 elimination by air breathing also extends to snakes.Significantly the cutaneous exchange component was highest in the more aquatic species. The results are discussed in relation to recent reports of a higher than alleged role of the skin of reptiles in evaporative water loss. This study was supported by grant HE 12071 from the National Institutes of Health in the U. To asses the influence of photoperiod on sleep regulation EEG, EMG, and cortical temperature were continuously recorded for two baseline days and after 4 h sleep deprivation in Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) adapted to a short photoperiod (light dark 816). Comparison to previous data collected in a long photoperiod (lightdark 168) showed several major effects of photoperiod: 1. A prominent change in the 24-h distribution, duration and number of vigilance state episodes, whereas the total amount of sleep and waking was unchanged; 2. Cortical temperature was 0.7°C lower in the short photoperiod; 3. There was a significant negative correlation between cortical temperature and the frequency of REM sleep episodes; and 4. Absolute EEG power density showed a marked reduction in the short photoperiod. After sleep deprivation EEG slow-wave activity (mean power density 0.75–4.0 Hz) in NREM sleep showed a remarkably similar increase in both photoperiods demonstrating the robustness of the homeostatic regulation of sleep. Cortical temperature remained above baseline values after sleep deprivation in the short photoperiod whereas a negative rebound was present in the long photoperiod. Our results support the hypothesis that cortical temperature has a strong influence on REM sleep propensity and indicate the possibility of an optimum cortical temperature for recovery sleep after sleep deprivation. The lower EEG power density in the short photoperiod may contribute to energy conservation.Abbreviations LP long photoperiod - NREM non-rapid-eye-movement - REM rapid-eye-movement - SCN suprachiasmatic nucleus - SD sleep deprivation - SP short photoperiod - SWA slow-wave activity - T CRT cortical temperature  相似文献

Access to a running wheel causes gonadal recrudescence in Syrian hamsters whose reproductive axes have been suppressed by housing them under short day lengths (Borer et al. 1983). The first experiment tested the generality of this phenomenon in a population of rodents that is genetically heterogeneous for reproductive photoresponsiveness. Male meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) of the two extreme phenotypes — reproductively photoresponsive and non-responsive — were either provided with a running wheel or housed without one. After 4 weeks with a wheel, the responsive voles had recovered full reproductive function, while the reproductive axes of responsive voles housed without wheels remained suppressed. Three experiments queried whether the use of a wheel would have reproductively stimulative effects in other rodents. First, intact male mice given access to wheels showed no increase in testis size when compared to mice housed without wheels. Likewise, locomotor activity had no effect on male rats whose testes were partially regressed in response to testosterone implants or on female mice whose estrous cycles were pheromonally suppressed by housing them in groups. Thus the neuroendocrine pathway used by locomotor activity to enhance the secretion of gonadotropin is specifically allied with the pathway used by photoperiod to control GnRH secretion.Abbreviations GnRH gonadotropin-releasing hormone - LH luteinizing hormone  相似文献

Cane mice (Zygodontomys brevicauda) are year-round breeders in Venezuela. As shown previously, these animals are not reproductively responsive to variation in photoperiod. In the present experiments, male cane mice were maintained on long or short day lengths (16L:8D or 8L:16D, respectively) and challenged with each of three experimental treatments known to "unmask" reproductive photoresponsiveness in laboratory rats: olfactory bulbectomy, prolonged food restriction, and exposure as neonates to a single injection of testosterone. Variation in photoperiod had no inhibitory effect on the responses of cane mice to any of these three treatments, as assessed by the weight of their testes and seminal vesicles. A fourth experiment demonstrated that cane mice are insensitive to 10 wk of continuous exposure to pharmacological levels of melatonin, again as assessed by reproductive organ weight. Likewise, a fifth experiment documented a lack of response to 10 wk of late-afternoon injections of massive amounts of melatonin. The cane mouse apparently is unique among the animals challenged so far in these ways in that it seems to have no vestige of reproductive photoresponsiveness.  相似文献

Djungarian hamsters which did not respond physiologically to short day conditions were injected daily with melatonin. Hamsters responded to this treatment with typical body weight alterations and molt. Therefore, we concluded that the lack of short day adjustments is not based on insensitivity to melatonin in this species. Pretreatment with short days affected the timing of melatonin-induced body weight loss and molt. Hamsters became refractory to melatonin injections earlier for both traits if pretreated with short days. Low body weight level was maintained for a shorter period of time, whereas duration of molt was not affected. These results might indicate differences in the control of melatonin-induced body weight adjustments and molt.  相似文献

We measured basal metabolic rate (BMR) and total evaporative water loss (TEWL) of species of foxes that exist on the Arabian Peninsula, Blanfords fox (Vulpes cana) and two subspecies of Red fox (Vulpes vulpes). Combining these data with that on other canids from the literature, we searched for specialization of physiological traits among desert foxes using both conventional least squares regression and regressions based on phylogenetic independent contrasts. Further, we explored the consequences of reduced body size of foxes on life history parameters such as litter size and neonate mass. For Blanfords foxes, Red foxes from the central desert of Arabia, and Red foxes from the more mesic Asir mountains, body mass averaged 1,285±52 g, 1,967±289 g, and 3,060±482 g, respectively, whereas mean BMR, during summer, was 304.5±32.3 kJ/day, 418.0±32.4 kJ/day, and 724.1±120.2 kJ/day (±SD). An analysis of covariance with body mass as a covariate showed no statistical differences in BMR among foxes. Analysis of covariance indicated that Red fox from the Asir mountains had a higher TEWL than Red foxes from central Arabia or than Blanfords foxes also from the mountains. Comparisons of all species of desert and mesic foxes showed no significant differences in BMR, nor did desert foxes have a significantly lower BMR than other carnivores. TEWL of desert foxes was lower than other more mesic carnivores; deviations in TEWL ranged from –17.7% for the Fennec fox (Fennecus zerda) to –57.4% for the Kit fox (Vulpes velox). Although desert foxes have a BMR comparable to other more mesic species, it appears that desert foxes do have a smaller body mass, lowering overall energy requirements. We attribute this reduction in body size to the resource limitation hypothesis whereby natural selection favors smaller individuals in a resource-limited environment, especially during periods of severe food shortage. However, until common garden experiments are performed, developmental plasticity and acclimation cannot be ruled out as contributors to this pattern.Abbreviations BMR basal metabolic rate - CLSR conventional least squares regression - MYA million years ago - PIC phylogenetic independent contrasts - T a ambient temperature - TEWL total evaporative water loss - TNZ thermoneutral zone - O 2 oxygen consumption Communicated by G. The present study was designed to examine whether photoperiod alone was effective to induce seasonal changes in physiology in voles (Eothenomys.) from the Hengduan Mountain region. Eothenomys miletus were randomly assigned into either long photoperiod (LD; 16L: 8D) or short photoperiod (SD; 8L: 16D) for 4 weeks at constant temperature (25 °C). At the end of acclimation, SD voles showed lower body mass and body fat coupled with higher energy intake than LD voles. SD greatly enhanced the thermogenic capacity of E. miletus, as indicated by an elevated nonshivering thermogenesis (NST), mitochondrial protein in brown adipose tissue (BAT); basal metabolic rate (BMR) was also raised. Although no variations in serum leptin levels were found between SD and LD voles, serum leptin levels were positively correlated with body mass and body fat mass, and negatively correlated with energy intake and UCP1 content in BAT, respectively. To summarize, SD alone is effective in inducing higher thermogenic capacities and energy intake coupled with lower body mass and body fat mass in root voles. Leptin is potentially involved in the photoperiod induced body mass regulation and thermogenesis in E. miletus. Our study shows that SD alone is effective.  相似文献

Excessive body weight is inversely associated with insulin sensitivity in children and adults. Chromium supplementation produces modest improvement in insulin sensitivity in adults. The aim of this study was to examine the beneficial effects of chromium supplementation on insulin sensitivity and body composition in overweight children simultaneously modifying lifestyle. Twenty-five overweight children aged 9–12 years were randomized to receive either 400 μg of chromium chloride or placebo in double-blind fashion, during a 6-week lifestyle modification regimen that included nutritional education and 3×90 min of aerobic physical activity weekly. Insulin sensitivity was demonstrated using homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI). Changes in body mass index (BMI; kg/m2), BMI Z-score, waist circumference, body composition and fasting plasma glucose were measured. Although no significant benefit of chromium supplementation over placebo was evident for BMI, BMI Z-score and fasting insulin level, children who received chromium chloride demonstrated more positive changes versus the placebo group in HOMA (−1.84±1.07 vs. 0.05±0.42, P=.05), QUICKI (0.02±0.01 vs. −0.002±0.01, P=.05), lean body mass (2.43±0.68kg vs. 1.36±1.61kg, P=.02) and percentage body fat (−3.32±1.29% vs. 0.65±1.05%, P=.04). The desirable effects of chromium supplementation on insulin sensitivity and body composition were more apparent in pre-pubertal children. These results suggest that short-term chromium supplementation can improve insulin sensitivity and body composition in overweight children.  相似文献

The larvae of Psacothea hilaris (Pascoe) grown continuously under a long day in the laboratory pupate after the 4th, 5th, or 6th instar. This developmental polymorphism has complicated studies on the control of metamorphosis in P. hilaris. Since pupation in P. hilaris is known to be suppressed under a short day, a change in the photoperiod from a short to a long day with appropriate timing may assist in obtaining physiologically homogeneous larvae that pupate at the next molt. When the photoperiod was changed from 12-h light:12-h dark to 15-h light:9-h dark at the beginning of the 5th instar, the pupation rate at the next (5th) molt reached 90%, which was significantly higher than the proportion of larvae that pupated after the 5th instar when the larvae were grown continuously under a long day (52%). This rearing technique will expedite studies on the control of metamorphosis in P. hilaris.  相似文献

Summary The sequence of molt inCinnyricinclus leucogaster differs markedly from that in most passerine birds. Instead of having body molt proceed concurrently with that of wing and tail, the main body molt begins only after wing and tail molt are complete. Within the wing molt, the sequence of primary molt is normal descending, but that of secondary molt is peculiar. In most passerine bird, the three inner secondaries (nos. 7–9, the tertials) start the secondary molt followed by the six outer secondaries, but inCinnyricinclus the tertials do not begin molting until secondary 3 is growing. Secondaries 5 and 6, which are replaced in other Songbirds at the time of the last primary, are delayed until the time of body molt. This delayed molt of contour feathers and inner secondaries has the adaptive advantage of permitting the male to enter courtship activities with the maximum amount of violet gloss.Migration may occur at any point in the molting cycle. Some populations do not migrate until after the complete molt, others leave after wing and tail molt is finished, and still others at various stages during wing molt. One population migrates immediately after breeding, and then returns in early winter to the breeding grounds and has the annual molt before, rather than after the nesting season.

The proliferation of tench lymphocytes induced by mitogens was studied during the four seasons of the year. Fish were maintained under natural conditions of photoperiod and temperature (mean ± SD: 12±2°C in winter, 22±3°C in spring, 30±3°C in summer and 21±3°C in autumn). Cultures were performed in vitro at 22°C in all seasons and the results were compared. Subsequently, in seasons with extreme water temperatures, cultures in vitro were performed at the same temperature as that of the water (12°C in winter and 30°C in summer) and the results were compared seasonally at the seasonal temperature, i.e. at 22°C in spring, 30°C in summer, 22°C in autumn and 12°C in winter. Phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, lipolisaccharide from E. coli and pokeweed mitogen were used as mitogens. Studies performed at 22°C as assay temperature in all seasons showed profound seasonal changes: while in spring, summer and autumn the mitogenic response of lymphocytes to phytohemagglutinin, concanavalin A, lipolisaccharide from E. coli and pokeweed mitogen was very low, during winter the results obtained were significantly higher. However, when the assays were performed at the corresponding seasonal temperature the differences were not as pronounced between the different seasons, and the mitogenic responses of lymphocytes were found to be the lowest during the winter and the highest during the summer with all mitogens used. This fact suggests that immunosuppression occurs in winter and an immunostimulation occurs in summer. However, the higher response found in winter when assaying at 22°C suggests that this property of lymphocytes needs an assay temperature higher than the in vivo temperature in order to observe accurate mitogenic responses.Abbreviations Con A concanavalin A - cpm counts per minute - LPS E. coli lipolisaccharide - MS222 tricainemethane sulphonate - PBS phosphate-buffered saline - PHA phytohemagglutinin - PWM pokeweed mitogen - SI stimulation index  相似文献

The white-footed mouse,Peromyscus leucopus, exhibits two responses to a decreasing series of photoperiods. The winter molt and reproductive regression occur in mice maintained on a photoperiods of 12 hours of light per day or less. Daily torpor and weight of lipid-free brown fat increase gradually between photoperiods of LD 13:11 — LD 12:12 and LD 10:14 — 9:15 LD. Pinealectomized mice maintained on a LD 9:15 photoperiod fail to exhibit the extent of daily torpor and increased nesting which are characteristic of sham-operated animals. Replacement therapy with chronically implanted beeswax pellets containing 3 mg of melatonin reverses the effects of pinealectomy.Presented at the Eighth International Congress of Biometeorology, 9–14 September 1979, Shefayin, Israel.  相似文献
