Release rates of ammonium by nauplii, copepodid stages (CIIand CIV) and adult females of the marine copepod Eucalanus pileatusat 0.1 and 3.0 mm3 1–1 of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogiiwere determined at 20°C. When food was abundant, animalsof all stages released ammonium at similar rates per unit ash-freedry weight [24–35 nmol NH4(mg AFDW)–1 h–1on average]. At low food levels, CIVs and adult females releasedammonium significantly more slowly than did the naupliior CIIs[28 and 24 versus 51 and 50 nmoles(mg AFDW)–1h–1].Because they weighed less (50%), low-food nauplii and CIIs hadhigher calculated weight-specific excretion rates, than high-foodones of the same stage but release rates per copepod were similarin the two food regimens.   • 1 A life table of a subtropical population of Mesocyclops edax(Copepoda: Cyclopoida) was constructed from a cohort of individuals reared in enclosures in a small, eutrophic lake.
  • 2 The lake population was sampled concurrently to determine age structure, per capita birth, death and growth rates, body size and clutch size.
  • 3 Maturation times of enclosed males and females were 9.3 and 11.4 days, respectively. The population growth rate. r. was estimated to be 0.18 females day-1 for the enclosed population, but approximated zero on most dates in the lake population. Mortality was low in the enclosures which excluded predators and high in the field population exposed to planktivorous fish and Chaoborus.
  • 4 The means and variances of several fitness traits are related to the specific environment. The enclosure approach promises to be a useful tool in the study of zooplankton life history variation.

Nitrogen fixation by marine cyanobacteria   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Discrepancies between estimates of oceanic N(2) fixation and nitrogen (N) losses through denitrification have focused research on identifying N(2)-fixing cyanobacteria and quantifying cyanobacterial N(2) fixation. Previously unrecognized cultivated and uncultivated unicellular cyanobacteria have been discovered that are widely distributed, and some have very unusual properties. Uncultivated unicellular N(2)-fixing cyanobacteria (UCYN-A) lack major metabolic pathways including the tricarboxylic acid cycle and oxygen-evolving photosystem II. Genomes of the oceanic N(2)-fixing cyanobacteria are highly conserved at the DNA level, and genetic diversity is maintained by genome rearrangements. The major cyanobacterial groups have different physiological and ecological constraints that result in highly variable geographic distributions, with implications for the marine N-cycle budget.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The horizontal distribution of nauplii, CI-CIII, CIV-Cv and adult stages of the copepod Pseudodiaptomus hessei within the main basin of Lake Sibaya (27° 20' S, 32° 37' E) is described on the basis of semi-synoptic cruises on 6 August 1971, 28 January 1972 and 11 February 1972. The distribution observed is considered in relation to variations in food availability and water temperature over this homothermal lake. It is concluded that these factors are not primarily responsible for observed patterns of distribution. Rather, wind-induced currents appear to be of major significance in determining horizontal distribution. Stage-related differences in the nature and extent of horizontal redistribution following severe wind are described. A consideration of the vertical distribution of groups of life-history stages over a diel cycle in relation to the direction and relative strength of currents encountered by the copepods within their respective depth ranges provides an explanation for the differences in horizontal redistribution observed.  相似文献

Abstract The influence of marine copepod exudates (amino acids and NH4+) on activity by free-living bacteria, and the relative activity of epibiotic bacteria living on copepods were examined. Samples that contained copepods (100 copepods 1−1) were estimated to have leucine concentrations (K+S) that were higher by factor of 4.4, and leucine Vmax's that were higher by a factor of 1.8 relative to samples without copepods. NH4+ additions stimulated bacterial activity in samples that did not contain copepods, but had no effect in samples that contained copepods, suggesting that free-living bacteria were N-limited. Epibiotic bacteria accounted for about 20% of total bacterial activity. These results suggested that high-density copepod aggregations may liberate nutrients in sufficient quantity to significantly stimulate bacterial activity, and that epibiotic bacteria may be optimally positioned to exploit these resources.  相似文献

Daily pattern of egg release has been studied in the marine calanoid copepod, Labidocera aestiva (Wheeler) under cycling light-dark (12L-12D, 12D-12L) conditions, and constant light (24L) or darkness (24D). Under cycling conditions maximum egg release occurred during the dark phase. Rhythmic spawning was also evident under 24D, but not under 24L. The results suggest that the pattern of nocturnal egg release is regulated by an endogenous rhythm entrained by light.  相似文献

The polyunsaturated wax esters which occur in an oil droplet in Calanus helgolandicus apparently serve as a short term reserve metabolic fuel. The lipids of the copepods were labeled by feeding them (14)C-labeled diatoms, Skeletonema costatum, after which starvation and turnover experiments were carried out. During starvation both wax esters and triglycerides are largely depleted within 72 hr, whereas cholesterol and phospholipid decreased at much slower rates.  相似文献

The zooplankton community of a subtropical, eutrophic lake was studied over an annual cycle. Mesocyclops edax, the numerically dominant crustacean, exhibited a stationary age distribution for most of the year (July–March). Per capita growth rates (r) of M. edax approximated zero throughout most of the study, indicating a close correspondence between birth and death rates. High death rates in the spring and summer probably were due to intense predation, since physiological mortality was low and predators were abundant. Multiple regression analyses indicated that much of the variation in M. edax birth rates could be explained by abundance of their animal prey. Other plankton in this lake exhibited considerable seasonality, but not to the marked degree characteristic of temperate populations. The number of zooplankton species was low and cladocerans were scarce, as is characteristic of many eutrophic Florida Lakes.  相似文献

I have measured the specific population growth rate or production:biomass(P:B) ratio of the copepod Acrocalanus inermis by an incubationtechnique. The principal advantage of this method is that itis site- and time-specific and can therefore be used to determinespatial and temporal patterns in P:B. The values for P:B determinedby this method ranged from 0.07 day–1 to 0.36–1,with a mean of 0.28–1. During four cruises in continental shelf waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico in the winters of 1981–83, we performed quantitative studies on the grazing of the copepods Acartia tonsa, Centropages velificatus, and Eucalanus pileatus, on phytoplankton using natural particulate assemblages as food. Stations were in, or adjacent to the plume of the Mississippi River, thereby providing wide spectra of phytoplankton and suspended riverine particulate concentrations. Phytoplankton cell volume was converted to carbon, and this, coupled with carbon content measurements of these three copepod species, allowed comparisons of daily ingestion effort even though the copepods were of different sizes. Data were expressed in the same units (% of copepod body carbon ingested copepod –1 d–1) for each species. Over similar ranges of phytoplankton carbon concentrations (0.21–92.06 gCl–1), Acartia tonsa had higher carbon-specific ingestion rates (x = 22.31%, range = 0.08–152.37%) than C. velificatus (x = 2.8%, range = 0.00–31.09 %) or E. pileatus (x = 1.27%, range = 0.10–2.80%). Carbon-specific ingestion rates increased with increasing phytoplankton carbon concentration for A. tonsa (R2 = 0.81) and there was no evidence of saturated feeding on the carbon concentrations offered. A similar, but weaker trend was evident for E. pileatus (R2 = 0.71), but not C. velificatus (R2 = 0.49). Over a wide range of suspended particulate concentrations (10.6–95.2 mg l–1), there was no systematic effect of particulates on carbon-specific ingestion rate for any of the three copepod species. However, A. tonsa appeared more adept at grazing in highly turbid water than C. velificatus or E. pileatus.  相似文献

The oxygen consumption rate during embryogenesis of Acartia tonsa subitaneous eggs were measured at different temperatures (10, 15, 17, 21, 24 and 28°C) with nanorespirometry. The oxygen consumption was constant during the embryogenesis but increased rapidly at hatching time. The mean ± SD oxygen consumption rate increased exponentially with temperature and ranged from 0.09 ± 0.04 (10°C) to 0.54 ± 0.09 nmol O2 egg−1 h−1 (28°C). The mean ± SD Q10-value was 2.51 ± 0.15. Calculations of energy consumption during embryogenesis ranged from 1.86 to 18.28 mJ depending on temperature and development time. We conclude that the effect of temperature on oxygen consumption rate was far less important than the prolonged development time when calculating the energy consumed during embryogenesis.  相似文献

Mitochondrial energy production requires complex interactions among proteins encoded in both the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. The intergenomic coevolution of interacting gene products has been previously suggested based on interspecific comparisons of cytochrome c (encoded by the nuclear CYC gene) and cytochrome c oxidase (partly encoded in the mitochondrial DNA by the COX1, COX2 and COX3 genes). In the intertidal copepod, Tigriopus californicus, non-synonymous substitutions in the COX1 gene have previously been found in interpopulation comparisons. In order to determine if CYC also shows interpopulation variation, this gene was isolated from a cDNA library using a degenerate primer/polymerase chain reaction approach. Characterization of a cDNA sequence and 25 genomic DNA sequences derived from four T. californicus populations yielded the following results: (1) the T. californicus CYC gene is interrupted by an intron that occurs at the same position as the intron found in vertebrate CYC genes; (2) there is extensive sequence variation within both the coding region and intron of this gene and the vast majority of this variation occurs between sequences drawn from geographically distinct populations; (3) the coding sequence variation includes a minimum of five amino acid replacement substitutions; (4) segregation of length variants among offspring in an interpopulation cross revealed genotypic ratios consistent with the proposed allelic nature of the CYC variants. These results demonstrate that the requisite genetic variation required for intergenomic coevolution exists in the CYC-COX system in T. californicus.  相似文献

The toxic dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus sp. has recently been observed in temperate areas in the Southern Sea of the Republic of Korea. The purpose of this study was to examine the toxicity of Gambierdiscus sp. toward the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus. T. japonicus adult females and nauplii were exposed to various concentrations of algae or culture medium to assess toxicity and analyze gene expression patterns in the copepod. Based on the toxicity tests, Gambierdiscus sp. increased the mortality of nauplii and the immobility of adult females. The survival and mobility of T. japonicus were not affected by culture medium lacking Gambierdiscus sp. cells in the toxicity test. However, based on the analysis of gene expression in the copepod, exposure of the copepod to culture medium affected the expression of stress or detoxification-related genes. Further studies to identify toxins in Gambierdiscus sp. are required to increase our understanding of dinoflagellate toxicity.  相似文献

The mating behavior and the mating success of copepods rely on chemoreception to locate and track a sexual partner. However, the potential impact of the water-soluble fraction of hydrocarbons on these aspects of copepod reproduction has never been tested despite the widely acknowledged acute chemosensory abilities of copepods. I examined whether three concentrations of the water-soluble fraction of diesel oil (0.01%, 0.1% and 1%) impacts (i) the swimming behavior of both adult males and females of the widespread calanoid copepod Temora longcornis, and (ii) the ability of males to locate, track and mate with females. The three concentrations of the water-soluble fraction of diesel oil (WSF) significantly and non-significantly affect female and male swimming velocities, respectively. In contrast, both the complexity of male and female swimming paths significantly decreased with increasing WSF concentrations, hence suggesting a sex-specific sensitivity to WSF contaminated seawater. In addition, the three WSF concentrations impacted both T. longicornis mating behavior and mating success. Specifically, the ability of males to detect female pheromone trails, to accurately follow trails and to successfully track a female significantly decreased with increasing WSF concentrations. This led to a significant decrease in contact and capture rates from control to WSF contaminated seawater. These results indicate that hydrocarbon contamination of seawater decreases the ability of male copepods to detect and track a female, hence suggest an overall impact on population fitness and dynamics.  相似文献

Apart from grazing interactions, little is known regarding thesublethal effects of Karenia brevis cells on copepod behavior.We conducted grazing and mortality experiments with K. breviscells and brevetoxins (PbTx-2), establishing routes of toxicityfor the copepods Acartia tonsa, Temora turbinata and Centropagestypicus. Subsequent behavioral experiments determined whethercopepod swimming and photobehavior, both behaviors involvedin predator avoidance, were impaired at sublethal K. brevisand PbTx-2 levels. Copepods variably grazed toxic K. brevisand non-toxic Prorocentrum minimum at bloom concentrations.Although copepods accumulated brevetoxins, significant mortalitywas only observed in T. turbinata at the highest test concentration(1 x 107 K. brevis cells L–1). Acartia tonsa exhibitedminimal sublethal behavioral effects. However, there were significanteffects on the swimming and photobehavior of T. turbinata andC. typicus at the lowest sublethal concentrations tested (0.15µg PbTx-2 L–1, 1 x 105 K. brevis cells L–1).Although physiological incapacitation may have altered copepodbehavior, starvation likely played a major role as well. Thesedata suggest that sublethal effects of K. brevis and brevetoxinon copepod behavior occur and predicting the role of zooplanktongrazers in trophic transfer of algal toxins requires knowledgeof species-specific sublethal effects.  相似文献

The vertical and ontogenetic distribution, and diel verticalmigration (DVM), of Eucalanus inermis in relation to the strongvertical gradient in oxygen concentration associated with anintense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) were studied at a coastalarea off northern Chile (20–21° S). A close relationshipbetween the abundance of the whole copepod population and lowoxygen waters was found, with most developmental stages remainingnear the base of the oxycline (30–80 m) and within theupper zone of the OMZ (30–200 m). All stages performedDVM but not at all the stations, mainly between the 30–60and 60–200 m strata; a small fraction (<20%) appearedin the surface layer (0–30 m) mostly at night. This strategyof movement would result in a better utilization of food resourcessince the strong physical and chemical gradients at the baseof the oxycline and upper OMZ boundary might serve as a siteof particle accumulation. A secondary fluorescence peak was,in fact, found at all the stations, coinciding with minimaldissolved oxygen (DO, <1 mL O2 L–1) at the base ofthe oxycline or in the upper OMZ boundary. The relevance ofthe biogeochemical flux involved in this diel migration patternwas assessed by calculating the potential active input of carbonand nitrogen from the upper layers into deeper the OMZ.  相似文献

Two new methane-oxidizing bacteria have been isolated from seawater samples from Plymouth Sound. These marine methanotrophs have an obligate requirement for NaCl and exhibit many properties of typical Type I methanotrophs previously isolated from freshwater environments. However, they are different from all other methanotrophs thus far described in that they failed to grow on all solid media tested. The nitrogen metabolism of both strains was investigated. They were not N2-fixers nor would they use ammonia as nitrogen source. They appeared to utilize the glutamate dehydrogenase pathway for the assimilation of ammonia under all growth conditions tested.  相似文献
