Consequences of warming and postwarming events on photosynthetic thermotolerance (PT) and photoprotective responses in tropical evergreen species remain elusive. We chose Citrus to answer some of the emerging questions related to tropical evergreen species' PT behaviour including (i) how wide is the genotypic variation in PT? (ii) how does PT respond to short-term warming and (iii) how do photosynthesis and photoprotective functions respond over short-term warming and postwarming events? A study on 21 genotypes revealed significant genotypic differences in PT, though these were not large. We selected five genotypes with divergent PT and simulated warming events: Tmax 26/20°C (day-time highest maximum/night-time lowest maximum) (Week 1) < Tmax 33/30°C (Week 2) < Tmax 36/32°C (Week 3) followed by Tmax 26/16°C (Week 4, recovery). The PT of all genotypes remained unaltered despite strong leaf megathermy (leaf temperature > air temperature) during warming events. Though moderate warming showed genotype-specific stimulation in photosynthesis, higher warming unequivocally led to severe loss in net photosynthesis and induced higher nonphotochemical quenching. Even after a week of postwarming, photoprotective mechanisms strongly persisted. Our study points towards a conservative PT in evergreen citrus genotypes and their need for sustaining higher photoprotection during warming as well as postwarming recovery conditions.  相似文献

The response of small understory trees to long-term drought is vital in determining the future composition, carbon stocks and dynamics of tropical forests. Long-term drought is, however, also likely to expose understory trees to increased light availability driven by drought-induced mortality. Relatively little is known about the potential for understory trees to adjust their physiology to both decreasing water and increasing light availability. We analysed data on maximum photosynthetic capacity (Jmax, Vcmax), leaf respiration (Rleaf), leaf mass per area (LMA), leaf thickness and leaf nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations from 66 small trees across 12 common genera at the world's longest running tropical rainfall exclusion experiment and compared responses to those from 61 surviving canopy trees. Small trees increased Jmax, Vcmax, Rleaf and LMA (71, 29, 32, 15% respectively) in response to the drought treatment, but leaf thickness and leaf nutrient concentrations did not change. Small trees were significantly more responsive than large canopy trees to the drought treatment, suggesting greater phenotypic plasticity and resilience to prolonged drought, although differences among taxa were observed. Our results highlight that small tropical trees have greater capacity to respond to ecosystem level changes and have the potential to regenerate resilient forests following future droughts.  相似文献

Water‐use efficiency (WUE) has been recognized as an important characteristic of ecosystem productivity, which links carbon (C) and water cycling. However, little is known about how WUE responds to climate change at different scales. Here, we investigated WUE at leaf, canopy, and ecosystem levels under increased precipitation and warming from 2005 to 2008 in a temperate steppe in Northern China. We measured gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), evapotranspiration (ET), evaporation (E), canopy transpiration (Tc), as well as leaf photosynthesis (Pmax) and transpiration (Tl) of a dominant species to calculate canopy WUE (WUEc=GEP/T), ecosystem WUE (WUEgep=GEP/ET or WUEnee=NEE/ET) and leaf WUE (WUEl=Pmax/Tl). The results showed that increased precipitation stimulated WUEc, WUEgep and WUEnee by 17.1%, 10.2% and 12.6%, respectively, but decreased WUEl by 27.4%. Climate warming reduced canopy and ecosystem WUE over the 4 years but did not affect leaf level WUE. Across the 4 years and the measured plots, canopy and ecosystem WUE linearly increased, but leaf level WUE of the dominant species linearly decreased with increasing precipitation. The differential responses of canopy/ecosystem WUE and leaf WUE to climate change suggest that caution should be taken when upscaling WUE from leaf to larger scales. Our findings will also facilitate mechanistic understanding of the C–water relationships across different organism levels and in projecting the effects of climate warming and shifting precipitation regimes on productivity in arid and semiarid ecosystems.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of growth irradiance (I) on photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max), dark respiration rate (R D), carboxylation efficiency (CE), and leaf mass per unit area (LMA) in seedlings of the following four tropical tree species with contrasting shade-tolerance. Anthocephalus chinensis (Rubiaceae) and Linociera insignis (Oleaceae) are light-demanding, Barringtonia macrostachya (Lecythidaceae) and Calophyllum polyanthum (Clusiaceae) are shade-tolerant. Their seedlings were pot-planted under shading nets with 8, 25, and 50 % daylight for five months. With increase of I, all species displayed the trends of increases of LMA, photosynthetic saturation irradiance, and chlorophyll-based P max, and decreases of chlorophyll (Chl) content on both area and mass bases, and mass-based P max, R D, and CE. The area-based P max and CE increased with I for the light-demanders only. Three of the four species significantly increased Chl-based CE with I. This indicated the increase of nitrogen (N) allocation to carboxylation enzyme relative to Chl with I. Compared to the two shade-tolerants, under the same I, the two light-demanders had greater area- and Chl-based P max, photosynthetic saturation irradiance, lower Chl content per unit area, and greater plasticity in LMA and area- or Chl-based P max. Our results support the hypothesis that light-demanding species is more plastic in leaf morphology and physiology than shade-tolerant species, and acclimation to I of tropical seedlings is more associated with leaf morphological adjustment relative to physiology. Leaf nitrogen partitioning between photosynthetic enzymes and Chl also play a role in the acclimation to I.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in Sicily (south Italy) during two seasons to characterize by chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence four genotypes (Spunta, Sieglinde, Daytona, and Ninfa) of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) for off-season production during plant aging and to analyse the possible relation between Chl parameters and tuber yield. Chl fluorescence parameters [initial fluorescence (F0), maximum fluorescence (Fm), Fv/Fm, time in which maximal fluorescence occurs (Tmax)] gained from Kautsky kinetics and Chl content were measured weekly, from 5th to 6th leaf appearance to beginning of plant senescence in the first season and to full plant senescence in the second season. F0 and Fv/Fm were the most reliable Chl fluorescence parameters for the definition of genotypic differences while Chl content and Tmax were the most reliable Chl parameters to predict plant aging. Tuber yield was highly correlated with Chl content, Tmax, F0, and Fm.  相似文献

Grape juice contains about equal amounts of glucose and fructose, but wine strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ferment glucose slightly faster than fructose, leading to fructose concentrations that exceed glucose concentrations in the fermenting must. A high fructose/glucose ratio may contribute to sluggish and stuck fermentations, a major problem in the global wine industry. We evaluated wine yeast strains with different glucose and fructose consumption rates to show that a lower glucose preference correlates with a higher fructose/glucose phosphorylation ratio in cell extracts and a lower K m for both sugars. Hxk1 has a threefold higher V max with fructose than with glucose, whereas Hxk2 has only a slightly higher V max with glucose than with fructose. Overexpression of HXK1 in a laboratory strain of S. cerevisiae (W303–1A) accelerated fructose consumption more than glucose consumption, but overexpression in a wine yeast strain (VIN13) reduced fructose consumption less than glucose consumption. Results with laboratory strains expressing a single kinase showed that total hexokinase activity is inversely correlated with the glucose/fructose (G/F) discrepancy. The latter has been defined as the difference between the rate of glucose and fructose fermentation. We conclude that the G/F discrepancy in wine yeast strains correlates with the kinetic properties of hexokinase-mediated sugar phosphorylation. A higher fructose/glucose phosphorylation ratio and a lower K m might serve as markers in selection and breeding of wine yeast strains with a lower tendency for sluggish fructose fermentation.  相似文献

Fourteen strains of a thermophilic, rod-shaped, peritrichously flagellatedClostridium species were isolated from various mud and soil samples. Round to slightly oval spores were formed in terminal position. The isolates were obligate anaerobes and grew chemolithotrophically with H2 plus CO2 as well as chemoorganotrophically with fructose, glucose, glycerate, or methanol. Under both conditions, acetate was the only organic fermentation product formed in significant amounts. The pH optimum for growth was 5.7; the marginal temperatures for growth wereT min, 36°C;T opt, 56–60°C; andT max, 69/70°C. The DNA contained 53–55 mol% guanine plus cytosine. the isolated strains form a new clostridial species; the nameClostridium thermoautotrophicum is proposed.  相似文献

High‐temperature tolerance in plants is important in a warming world, with extreme heat waves predicted to increase in frequency and duration, potentially leading to lethal heating of leaves. Global patterns of high‐temperature tolerance are documented in animals, but generally not in plants, limiting our ability to assess risks associated with climate warming. To assess whether there are global patterns in high‐temperature tolerance of leaf metabolism, we quantified Tcrit (high temperature where minimal chlorophyll a fluorescence rises rapidly and thus photosystem II is disrupted) and Tmax (temperature where leaf respiration in darkness is maximal, beyond which respiratory function rapidly declines) in upper canopy leaves of 218 plant species spanning seven biomes. Mean site‐based Tcrit values ranged from 41.5 °C in the Alaskan arctic to 50.8 °C in lowland tropical rainforests of Peruvian Amazon. For Tmax, the equivalent values were 51.0 and 60.6 °C in the Arctic and Amazon, respectively. Tcrit and Tmax followed similar biogeographic patterns, increasing linearly (?8 °C) from polar to equatorial regions. Such increases in high‐temperature tolerance are much less than expected based on the 20 °C span in high‐temperature extremes across the globe. Moreover, with only modest high‐temperature tolerance despite high summer temperature extremes, species in mid‐latitude (~20–50°) regions have the narrowest thermal safety margins in upper canopy leaves; these regions are at the greatest risk of damage due to extreme heat‐wave events, especially under conditions when leaf temperatures are further elevated by a lack of transpirational cooling. Using predicted heat‐wave events for 2050 and accounting for possible thermal acclimation of Tcrit and Tmax, we also found that these safety margins could shrink in a warmer world, as rising temperatures are likely to exceed thermal tolerance limits. Thus, increasing numbers of species in many biomes may be at risk as heat‐wave events become more severe with climate change.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that in temperate deciduous trees acclimation to potentially damaging high irradiances occurs via long-term adjustments in foliar photosynthetic capacity, and short-term changes in xanthophyll cycle pool size in response to weather fluctuations, nitrogen concentration and pigment composition were examined along a canopy light gradient in three species –Betula pendula, Populus tremula and Tilia cordata (from most shade intolerant to tolerant), and foliage photosynthetic potentials in P. tremula and T. cordata. Integrated quantum flux density (Qi) incident on leaves was estimated with a method combining hemispherical photography and light measurements with quantum sensors made over the growing season. Long- and short-term light indices – average total seasonal daily integrated quantum flux density (Ts, mol m–2 d–1) and that of the 3 d preceding foliage sampling (T3d) – were calculated for each sampled leaf. In addition to total integrated quantum flux density, the part of Qi attributable to direct flux was also computed. Strong linear relationships between the capacity for photosynthetic electron transport per area (Jamax), estimated from in situ measurements of effective quantum yield of photosystem II (PS II), and Qi averaged over the season and over the preceding 3 d were found for all studied species. However, the major determinant of Jamax, the product of electron transport capacity per leaf dry mass (Jmmax) and leaf dry mass per area (MA), was MA rather than Jmmax, which was relatively constant along the light gradient. There was evidence that Jamax is more tightly related to Ts, which characterizes the light climate during foliar development, than to short-term integrated light, possibly because there is little flexibility in adjustments in MA after the completion of foliar growth. Leaf chlorophyll concentrations and the investment of leaf nitrogen in chlorophyll (Chl/N) were negatively related to Qi– an investment pattern which improves light harvesting in low light. Xanthophyll cycle pool size (VAZ, violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin) either expressed per unit chlorophyll (VAZ/Chl) or as a fraction of total carotenoids (VAZ/Car) increased with increasing Qi in all species. However, contrary to Jamax, it tended to correlate more strongly with short-term than with long-term average integrated light. There were few interspecific differences in Jamax, Chl/N, VAZ/Chl and VAZ/Car when the variability in light level incident to the leaves was accounted for, indicating that the foliage of both shade-intolerant and -tolerant temperate tree species possesses considerable phenotypic flexibility. Collectively these results support the view that rapid adjustment of the xanthophyll cycle pool size provides an important means for acclimation to light fluctuations in a time scale of days, during which the potential for photosynthetic quenching of excitation energy is not likely to change appreciably.  相似文献

Based on prior evidence of coordinated multiple leaf trait scaling, we hypothesized that variation among species in leaf dark respiration rate (R d) should scale with variation in traits such as leaf nitrogen (N), leaf life-span, specific leaf area (SLA), and net photosynthetic capacity (A max). However, it is not known whether such scaling, if it exists, is similar among disparate biomes and plant functional types. We tested this idea by examining the interspecific relationships between R d measured at a standard temperature and leaf life-span, N, SLA and A max for 69 species from four functional groups (forbs, broad-leafed trees and shrubs, and needle-leafed conifers) in six biomes traversing the Americas: alpine tundra/subalpine forest, Colorado; cold temperate forest/grassland, Wisconsin; cool temperate forest, North Carolina; desert/shrubland, New Mexico; subtropical forest, South Carolina; and tropical rain forest, Amazonas, Venezuela. Area-based R d was positively related to area-based leaf N within functional groups and for all species pooled, but not when comparing among species within any site. At all sites, mass-based R d (R d-mass) decreased sharply with increasing leaf life-span and was positively related to SLA and mass-based A max and leaf N (leaf N mass). These intra-biome relationships were similar in shape and slope among sites, where in each case we compared species belonging to different plant functional groups. Significant R d-massN mass relationships were observed in all functional groups (pooled across sites), but the relationships differed, with higher R d at any given leaf N in functional groups (such as forbs) with higher SLA and shorter leaf life-span. Regardless of biome or functional group, R d-mass was well predicted by all combinations of leaf life-span, N mass and/or SLA (r 2≥ 0.79, P < 0.0001). At any given SLA, R d-mass rises with increasing N mass and/or decreasing leaf life-span; and at any level of N mass, R d-mass rises with increasing SLA and/or decreasing leaf life-span. The relationships between R d and leaf traits observed in this study support the idea of a global set of predictable interrelationships between key leaf morphological, chemical and metabolic traits. Carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) has compound pinnate leaves consisting of 4 – 6 pairs of leaflets. However, in conditions of in vitro culture only one pair of leaflets develops. With increasing irradiance from 9.3 to 74.1 µmol m–2 s–1, leaf area increased 5-fold. Sucrose also significantly increased leaf area and the maxima were at concentration 147 mM at high irradiance and 233.6 mM at low irradiance. Sucrose was superior to fructose, glucose and combination of both in increasing leaf area. Decreasing concentration of KNO3 and NH4NO3 caused a 3-fold decline of leaf area.  相似文献

Leaf mass per unit area (LMA), carbon and nitrogen contents, leaf construction cost, and photosynthetic capacity (P max) of Adiantum reniforme var. sinensis, an endangered fern endemic to the Three Gorges region in southwest China, were compared in five populations differing in habitat such as soil moisture and irradiance. The low soil moisture and high irradiance habitat population exhibited significantly higher LMA, area-based leaf construction (CCA), and carbon content (CA), but lower leaf nitrogen content per unit dry mass (NM) than the other habitat populations. The high soil moisture and low irradiance habitat populations had the lowest CCA, but their cost/benefic ratios of CCA/P max were similar to the medium soil moisture and irradiance habitat population due to their lower leaf P max. Hence A. reniforme var. sinensis prefers partially shaded, moist but well-drained, slope habitats. Due to human activities, however, its main habitats now are cliffs or steeply sloped bare rocks with poor and thin soil. The relatively high energy requirements and low photosynthetic capacity in these habitats could limit the capability of the species in extending population or interspecific competition and hence increase its endangerment.  相似文献

Shoots of the tropical latex-producing tree Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) grow according to a periodic pattern, producing four to five whorls of leaves per year. All leaves in the same whorl were considered to be in the same leaf-age class, in order to assess the evolution of photosynthesis with leaf age in three clones of rubber trees, in a plantation in eastern Thailand. Light-saturated CO2 assimilation rate (A max) decreased more with leaf age than did photosynthetic capacity (maximal rate of carboxylation, V cmax , and maximum rate of electron transport, J max), which was estimated by fitting a biochemical photosynthesis model to the CO2-response curves. Nitrogen-use efficiency (A max/Na, Na is nitrogen content per leaf area) decreased also with leaf age, whereas J max and V cmax did not correlate with N a. Although measurements were performed during the rainy season, the leaf gas exchange parameter that showed the best correlation with A max was stomatal conductance (g s). An asymptotic function was fitted to the A max-g s relationship, with R 2 = 0.85. A max, V cmax, J max and g s varied more among different whorls in the same clone than among different clones in the same whorl. We concluded that leaf whorl was an appropriate parameter to characterize leaves for the purpose of modelling canopy photosynthesis in field-grown rubber trees, and that stomatal conductance was the most important variable explaining changes in A max with leaf age in rubber trees.  相似文献

The ecophysiological linkage of leaf phosphorus (P) to photosynthetic capacity (A max) and to the A max–nitrogen relation remains poorly understood. To address this issue we compiled published and unpublished field data for mass-based A max, nitrogen (N) and P (n = 517 observations) from 314 species at 42 sites in 14 countries. Data were from four biomes: arctic, cold temperate, subtropical (including Mediterranean), and tropical. We asked whether plants with low P levels have low A max, a shallower slope of the A max–N relationship, and whether these patterns have a geographic signature. On average, leaf P was substantially lower in the two warmer than in the two colder biomes, with the reverse true for N:P ratios. The evidence indicates that the response of A max to leaf N is constrained by low leaf P. Using a full factorial model for all data, A max was related to leaf N, but not to leaf P on its own, with a significant leaf N ×  leaf P interaction indicating that the response of A max to N increased with increasing leaf P. This was also found in analyses using one value per species per site, or by comparing only angiosperms or only woody plants. Additionally, the slope of the A max–N relationship was higher in the colder arctic and temperate than warmer tropical and subtropical biomes. Sorting data into low, medium, and high leaf P groupings also showed that the A max–N slope increases with leaf P. These analyses support claims that in P-limited ecosystems the A max–N relationship may be constrained by low P, and are consistent with laboratory studies that show P-deficient plants have limited ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration, a likely mechanism for the P influence upon the A max–N relation. 结果如下:(1)重度淹没带植物叶片的A_(mass)、N_(mass)、P_(mass)显著高于微度淹没带。

The lipophilic yeastsMalassezia furfur andM. pachydermatis show an initial rapid uptake ofl-leucine followed by slower steady-state rates. At least two independent transport systems forl-leucine were present in both species. The high-affinity system forM. furfur had a KT of 0.047 µM with a Jmax of 222 fM/min/106 cells (65 pM/min/mg dry weight), whereas forM. pachydermatis the KT was 0.067 µM with a Jmax of 709 fM/min/106 cells (89 pM/min/dry weight). The low-affinity system forM. furfur had a KT of 646 µM with a Jmax of 1.62 pM/min/106 cells (0.5 nM/min/mg dry weight) and that ofM. pachydermatis had a KT of 3.3 µM with a Jmax of 9.97 pM/min/106 cells (1.3 nM/min/mg dry weight). Both transport systems were energy-dependent. Cells incubated with Tween 80 showedl-leucine uptake via both transport systems. Cells incubated with a combination of glucose (1%) and Tween 80 (0.01%) showed decreased transport rates for the high-affinity system for both species as compared with cells incubated only with glucose. The low-affinity transport system of both species in the presence of glucose plus Tween 80 showed an initial rapid uptake followed by greater efflux than influx ofl-leucine.l-Leucine demonstrated binding to Tween 80, but the major effect of Tween 80 on membrane transport inMalassezia appears to be on the efflux of transported molecules.  相似文献

Leaf growth responses to N supply and leaf position were studied using widely-spaced sunflower plants growing under field conditions. Both N supply (range 0.25 to 11.25 g added N per plant) and leaf position significantly (p=0.001) affected maximum leaf area (LAmax) of target leaves through variations in leaf expansion rate (LER); effects on duration of expansion were small. Specific leaf nitrogen (SLN, g N m-2) fell quite rapidly during the initial leaf expansion phase (LA < 35% LAmax) but leveled off during the final 65% increase of leaf area. This pattern held across leaf positions and N supply levels. Leaf nitrogen accumulation after 35% LAmax continued up to achievement of LAmax; reductions in the higher SLN characteristic of the initial phase were insufficient to cover the nitrogen requirements for expansion during the final phase. LER in the quasi-linear expansion phase (35 to 100% of LAmax) was strongly associated with SLN above a threshold that varied with leaf position (mean 1.79±0.225 g N m-2). This contrasts with the response of photosynthesis at high irradiance to SLN, which has previously been shown to have a threshold of 0.3 g N m-2; in the present work saturation of photosynthetic rate was evident when SLN reached 1.97 g N m-2. Thus, once the area of a leaf exceeds 35% of LAmax, expansion proceeds provided SLN values are close to the levels required for maximum photosynthesis. However, growth of leaves during the initial expansion phase ensures a minimum production of leaf area even at low N supply levels.  相似文献

The conversion of natural habitats to human land uses often increases local temperatures, creating novel thermal environments for species. The variable responses of ectotherms to habitat conversion, where some species decline while others persist, can partly be explained by variation among species in their thermal niches. However, few studies have examined thermal niche variation within species and across forest‐land use ecotones, information that could provide clues about the capacity of species to adapt to changing temperatures. Here, we quantify individual‐level variation in thermal traits of the tropical poison frog, Oophaga pumilio, in thermally contrasting habitats. Specifically, we examined local environmental temperatures, field body temperatures (Tb), preferred body temperatures (Tpref), critical thermal maxima (CTmax), and thermal safety margins (TSM) of individuals from warm, converted habitats and cool forests. We found that frogs from converted habitats exhibited greater mean Tb and Tpref than those from forests. In contrast, CTmax and TSM did not differ significantly between habitats. However, CTmax did increase moderately with increasing Tb, suggesting that changes in CTmax may be driven by microscale temperature exposure within habitats rather than by mean habitat conditions. Although O. pumilio exhibited moderate divergence in Tpref, CTmax appears to be less labile between habitats, possibly due to the ability of frogs in converted habitats to maintain their Tb below air temperatures that reach or exceed CTmax. Selective pressures on thermal tolerances may increase, however, with the loss of buffering microhabitats and increased frequency of extreme temperatures expected under future habitat degradation and climate warming.
