In the context of the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) numerous benthic indices have been proposed recently to assess the ecological quality of marine and transitional waters. In several studies these metrics were applied to coastal and estuarine environments under diverse anthropogenic pressures. Although currently the dumping of dredged material is one of the most prominent human impacts that modify estuaries, the performance of benthic indices to detect effects of dredged sediment relocation has not yet been tested explicitly. Hence we examined a selection of common metrics (species richness, Shannon diversity, AMBI, M-AMBI, W-value, BO2A) at 11 dumping and 11 nearby reference areas in the highly modified Elbe estuary (Germany), where permanent dredging is necessary to maintain the depth of the navigation channel. In order to cover the entire estuary, the study area spanned over the whole salinity gradient from limnic to euhaline. Additionally, we investigated changes in benthic communities due to dredged material placement. All indices, except the W-value, were suitable to differentiate between dumping and reference areas and showed significantly better index values exclusively at reference areas. The applicability of AMBI and M-AMBI was restricted in the limnic stretch due to the more frequent occurrence of freshwater species there. The W-value and BO2A were non-satisfactory in the case of azoic sediment, and in most cases these two indices indicated much better ecological status classifications than the other indices tested. Furthermore, the BO2A had restricted applicability with increasing salinity. At eight of eleven sites the benthic communities differed significantly between dumping and reference areas. Our findings show that the power of conventional benthic indices to detect physical disturbances like the dumping of dredged sediment varies greatly. Having this in mind, we suggest to choose carefully the benthic indices for ecological quality assessments according to the WFD in estuaries in order to avoid misclassifications. Such errors may lead to unnecessarily expensive remediation activities or, in the opposite case, to inactivity although actions were necessary. Furthermore, in order to better meet the WFD requirements we suggest that, regarding frequency and volume, dumping should be adapted as far as possible to the natural processes of sediment movement.  相似文献

The effects of dredging on the benthic communities in the Noosa River, a subtropical estuary in SE Queensland, Australia, were examined using a ‘Beyond BACI’ experimental design. Changes in the numbers and types of animals and characteristics of the sediments in response to dredging in the coarse sandy sediments near the mouth of the estuary were compared with those occurring naturally in two control regions. Samples were collected twice before and twice after the dredging operations, at multiple spatial scales, ranging from metres to kilometres. Significant effects from the dredging were detected on the abundance of some polychaetes and bivalves and two measures of diversity (numbers of polychaete families and total taxonomic richness). In addition, the dredging caused a significant increase in the diversity of sediment particle sizes found in the dredged region compared with elsewhere. Community composition in the dredged region was more similar to that in the control regions after dredging than before. Changes in the characteristics of the sedimentary environment as a result of the dredging appeared to lead to the benthic communities of the dredged region becoming more similar to those elsewhere in the estuary, so dredging in this system may have led to the loss or reduction in area of a specific type of habitat in the estuary with implications for overall patterns of biodiversity and ecosystem function.  相似文献

Variations in prosome length and width, dry weight and condition factor of female Acartia clausi copepods were studied at three salinities (35, 34 and 33 psu) in the euhaline region of two estuaries (Bilbao and Urdaibai) of the Basque coast, with different level of anthropogenic impact. Effect of the environmental variables upon the morphology of A. clausi females on a small geographic scale is discussed. In general, biometric variables showed no significant differences between the two estuaries, but dry weight and condition factor were significantly higher in the estuary of Urdaibai at 35 and 34 psu, whilst at 33 psu they were higher in Bilbao. Body dimensions decreased significantly with decreasing salinity in both estuaries, however, no similar trends were observed for dry weight and condition factor. Temperature appeared the main variable to account size variations, but once eliminated seasonal effect of the temperature body size was related with oxygen concentration in the estuary of Bilbao and with salinity in Urdaibai. This study reveals that morphological characteristics of A. clausi not are only dependent on the temperature, but also, within a limited geographical zone, on local differences in environmental variables, mainly salinity and oxygen concentration.  相似文献

The Tamar Estuary, S.W. England, is a commercial and military port and the site of a major naval dockyard. Parts of the estuary require regular maintenance dredging and some capital dredging has been undertaken. The estuary is also assigned Special Area of Conservation (SAC) status under the European Habitats Directive and is an important site for migrating wildfowl and wading birds. As part of an assessment undertaken for a consortium of the port operators and regulatory authorities, we have analysed the ecological, physical, chemical and socio-economic impacts of dredging on the Tamar Estuary ecosystem. This paper focuses on the physical changes through the analysis of historical survey data and the use of hydrodynamic modelling. The objective was to evaluate whether dredging has influenced the estuary morphology or hydrodynamic regime and thus impacted on the ecological habitat. Bathymetric survey data collected between 1895 and 1968 were compared with multi-beam echo sounder data obtained in 2001. The paper survey records were digitised, geo-referenced and adjusted to the modern datum and units. The accuracy and limitations of this approach are discussed. Both sets of data were contoured and analysed using a GIS package. Comparisons between 1895 and 2001 hydraulics were made using a 1-D hydrodynamic and sediment transport model set up for the bathymetry at those times but ‘driven’ using a single, common, year-long data set for tides and river flows. The results suggest that although the deep channel in the region that is mainly south of the Tamar road bridge, is on average 0.5 m deeper in 2001 than it was in 1895, this has had a negligible effect on the area of intertidal mud and, thus, on habitat available for wading birds, and minimal impact on the large-scale hydrodynamics of the estuary.  相似文献

Dredging Austrian Danube harbours becomes necessary to keep the navigation channel free from bed sediment and to insure safe navigation, especially after major floods. In most cases, the excavated substrate is deposited in the free-flowing river section in the vicinity of the mouth of a harbour. The effects of harbour dredging on the biota need to be studied to minimize possible outcomes that may endanger the ecological status of the river system in order to implement the aims of the European Water Framework Directive. This study presents the first quantitative information on the colonisation of benthic invertebrates with respect to Danube harbours. One sampling at Linz Harbour was conducted before dredging and four samplings were carried out after dredging. Four transects were documented in the affected river section. The study used an air-lift sampler and a grab sampler to investigate if and to what extent the benthic invertebrate community is disturbed. It found that the sediment dredging heavily affected the benthic invertebrates (decline of 82% of biomass), while the dumping of the material had no effects on the benthic Danube biota. As a rough estimate (conferring to a simple trend line analysis) the harbour bottom fauna would recover after 235 days.  相似文献

Incubation by both parents is a common parental behaviour in many avian species. Biparental incubation is expected if the survival prospects of offspring are greatly raised by shared care, relative to the costs incurred by each parent. We investigated this proposition in the Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus, in which both parents incubate the clutch, but one parent (either the male or the female) usually deserts after hatching of the eggs. We carried out a mate‐removal and food supplementation experiment to reveal both the role of the sexes and food abundance in maintaining biparental incubation by removing either the male or the female from the nest for a short period of time. In some nests we provided supplementary food for the parent that remained at the nest to reduce the costs of incubation, whereas other nests were left unsupplemented. Although males spent more time on incubation after their mate had been removed, females’ incubation did not change. Notwithstanding the increased male incubation, total nest attentiveness was lower at uniparental nests than at biparental controls. However, incubation behaviour was not influenced by food supplementation. We conclude that offspring desertion during incubation is apparently costly in the Kentish plover, and this cost cannot be ameliorated with supplementary food.  相似文献

Seston quantity and quality was measured in the Urdaibai Estuary in summer, when river discharge is low and tidal flushing is the main driving force to transport and resuspend particulate matter in the estuary. The highest seston concentrations are found in the upper estuary, where more than 90% of total suspended particulate matter is made up of particles <20 μm. There is a temporal ebb-flood asymmetry and turbulent mixing is stronger at flood tide. During dry calm periods sediment resuspension is observed for a short period of time at floods during spring tides, decreasing drastically before slack waters. In spite of this, particulate organic matter mainly originates from anthropogenic sources (domestic wastewater discharge) and plankton production.  相似文献

Short-term changes in the photosynthetic carbon metabolism and physiological state of phytoplankton were studied over a summer fortnight-long period in the Urdaibai estuary (Bay of Biscay) and related to observed environmental patterns. Day-to-day variability in the hydrographical and biological features of the estuary during the study period was due to changes in meteorological and tidal conditions. Phytoplankton biomass and primary production increased with the improvement of weather, i.e., light conditions, during neap tides. Thus a mixed bloom of cryptophyceans, Euglena sp., and the dinoflagellate Peridinium foliaceum developed in the middle and upper estuary. Photosynthetic responses of phytoplankton were related to the time-scale of changes in light regime. Allocation of photosynthate to major macromolecular classes (LMWM, lipid, polysaccharide, and protein), like phytoplankton biomass and primary production, showed strong spatio-temporal variability. High carbon fixation into low molecular weight metabolites was associated with growth limitation by low light. The relative incorporation of photosynthetic carbon into proteins increased at the beginning of the phytoplankton bloom but overall, it was rather constant. However, carbon allocation into storage products such us lipid or polysaccharide increased when carbon and energy produced under optimal growth conditions exceeded what could be assimilated into protein. These patterns are explained by both spatio-temporal changes in the environmental conditions and species-specific differences. In general, daily variability appeared to be more important than diurnal periodicity in the physiological responses of phytoplankton. Results from this study show that phytoplankton photosynthesis and carbon metabolism are simultaneously affected by biotic and abiotic factors, although short-term light fluctuations may have a major influence on the physiological state of phytoplankton in the Urdaibai estuary.  相似文献

Population declines of disturbance-dependent species due to suppression of natural disturbances are realized across ecosystems. The piping plover (Charadrius melodus; plover), a disturbance-dependent and conservation-reliant shorebird that nests on sandy beaches and barrier islands on the Atlantic Coast, was listed under the United States Endangered Species Act in 1986. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy landed on Fire and Westhampton islands, barrier island nesting sites for plovers in New York, USA. Hurricane Sandy was a natural disturbance in this system, creating abundant nesting habitat. The number of chicks produced by a pair, or a population, is a direct measure of reproductive output, and gaining a better understanding of productivity and chick behavior following large-scale habitat creation may improve plover habitat management and potentially species persistence. We evaluated the effects of landscape features on habitat selection, behavior, and survival of plover broods using logistic regression, generalized linear mixed effects models, and survival models. Plover broods selected flatter sites with less dense vegetation than available at random. Chick foraging rates were highest in moist substrates and were lower in areas of higher nesting plover density. Chick survival was greater for broods that hatched earlier in the breeding season and increased as chicks aged. Generally, providing access to sites with flatter, moist substrates will likely result in higher quality brood rearing habitat on the landscape. Ultimately, vegetation removal and habitat management may be needed to reduce plover nesting density and ensure sufficient habitat, which may in turn improve plover chick survival. Moreover, sustaining natural landscape disturbances such as those resulting from storms, and not taking actions to prevent hurricane-created overwash, will allow these landscape features to persist.  相似文献

The influence of the ebb tide on the abundance and distributionof bloom-forming species, as well as the mechanisms for theselection of those species which remain, were investigated inthe shallow, tidal-flushed Urdaibai estuary, north Spain. Phytoplanktonwas collected monthly from May to September 1998 during differenttidal conditions (neap-spring) at five stations along the salinitygradient of the estuary. During the neap tides of May, Leptocylindrusdanicus dominated in the lower estuary, together with Thalassiosiraguillardii and Peridinium foliaceum in the upper segment; T.guillardiiexperienced the broadest displacement along the estuary. Duringthe June and July cruises, coinciding with mid-tidal amplitudesand high temperatures, Peridinium quinquecorne densely aggregatedin the upper estuary at the slack high tide, whereas Chaetocerossalsugineum bloomed at the intermediate stations. Cyclotellaatomus and Protoperidinium achromaticum reached high concentrationsin the upper zone only during the late stages of the ebb. Duringthe spring tides of September, Prorocentrum minimum, Heterocapsapygmaea and Heterocapsa rotundata appeared in the lower marineestuary, being washed out at low tide. By contrast, the diatomsSkeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira guillardii and Cyclotellaatomus were the most abundant species in the upper reaches,peaking during the ebb. Physical trapping and high water residencetimes served to retain blooming species in the upper estuary.The intense growth of the estuarine diatoms may compensate forthe advective seaward losses of cells during the ebb, thus allowingthe development of stable populations in the estuary. Only Peridiniumquinquecorne seems to combine an endogenous tidal rhythm witha photic response to remain in the tidal area of the estuary.  相似文献

The abundance and spatial distribution of copepod species werecompared in the euhaline region of the polluted estuary of Bilbao[mean biological oxygen demand (BOD): 49748.05 kg day–1in 1996] and the unperturbed estuary of Urdaibai. Sampling wasperformed at fixed salinity sites, where data of temperature,dissolved oxygen saturation, particulate organic matter, Secchidisk depth and chlorophyll were also obtained. Differences betweenthe estuaries and within the estuaries for environmental variablesand copepod abundances were tested statistically. The dominantspecies Acartia clausi and Paracalanus parvus differed significantlyin abundance between estuaries, and most of neritic speciesdiminished more drastically with decreasing salinity in Bilbaoby the effect of pollution. The different responses observedamong species in relation to pollution and water desalinationare discussed. The lack of the brackish-water species in Bilbaoindicated that water quality worsening upward the estuary ofBilbao not only limited the penetration of neritic species butalso prevented the development of autochthonous estuarine species.At the outer euhaline region of Bilbao, however, pollution wasfound to be low enough to enhance the development of tolerantneritic species that are favoured under moderate pollution conditions.Results indicate that comparisons of copepod abundances anddistributions with salinity in estuaries may be a useful toolto evaluate the health of the different estuarine pelagic habitats.  相似文献

In this paper, a monitoring and modelling concept for ecological optimized harbour dredging and fine sediment disposal in large rivers is presented. According to the concept, first a preliminary assessment should be performed previous to the dredging and dumping procedure to derive knowledge about the current status in hydrodynamics, morphology and instream habitat quality. During the performance of the maintenance work, a high-resolution monitoring program has to be organized to measure flow velocities, the suspended sediment concentrations and the extent of the occurring plume. These data can then be compared with natural suspended sediment conditions and serve as input data for numerical sediment transport modelling. Furthermore, bathymetric surveys and biotic sampling enable the detection of possible effects of dredging and disposal in the post-dumping stage. Based on sediment transport modelling approaches, short- to mid-term developments of the sediment plume can be predicted with an additional and final habitat evaluation at the end of the project. This concept was applied and optimized during the maintenance work at the case study winter harbour Linz at the Danube River. The findings of the presented study highlight the necessity of integrated monitoring and modelling approaches for harbour dredging especially in large river systems.  相似文献

The Scheldt estuary is characterised by a specific energy pattern resulting from the interaction of wave energy, tidal energy and river energy. It divides the estuary into three parts and governs suspended matter transport and distribution pattern. Observation of suspended matter transport shows the existence of three estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM), a marine-dominated ETM in the lower estuary at the river mouth, a river-dominated ETM in the upper estuary with suspended matter concentration reaching up to 300 mg/l, and the most important tide-dominated ETM in the middle estuary with suspended matter concentrations from several hundred milligrams per litre up to a few grams per litre. Resuspension is the dominant phenomenon in this last ETM due to the tidal related bottom scour, which is initiated when a critical erosion velocity of 0.56 m/s is exceeded. An assessment of residual current along the axis of the estuary shows distinctive pattern between the surface water flow and the near bottom water flow. Also the local morphology of the river, natural or man-made, has a prominent effect on the orientation and strength of the residual currents flowing along either side of the river or river bend. Evaluation of suspended matter concentration in relation to the current flow shows no systematic correlation either because of phenomena as scour lag and settling lag mainly in the middle estuary, or because of the current independency character of uniform-suspension mainly in the upper and lower estuary. Quantification of suspended matter load exhibits a net downstream transport from the upper estuary, a near-equilibrium sustainable status in the middle estuary and a net upstream transport of suspended matter from the lower estuary. The characteristic of suspended matter is induced by and is a function of e.g. tidal phase, spring-neap tide, longitudinal and vertical distribution mechanisms, seasons, short and long terms of anthropogenic influence and/or estuarine maintenance. Suspended matter is dominated by complex and cohesive organo-mineral aggregates. It consists of a variable amount of an inorganic fraction (average of 89%) and an organic fraction and occurs largely as flocs, the size of which is remarkably larger in the upper estuary and smallest within the ETM in the middle estuary. Independent time series measurements (1990–2000) of suspended matter property show an increasing sand fraction, a decreasing organic matter content, a rise in 13C as well as a decrease in water transparency. These independent measurements exhibit coherent consequences of estuarine maintenance operations. Maintenance dredging of the shipping channel and harbours and dumping operation in the Scheldt strengthen marine influence further landward, resulting in a sustained tidal range increment and upstream flow and transport of suspended matter.  相似文献

We isolated 45 new Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) microsatellite loci. These were tested for polymorphism in 42 Kentish plovers breeding in the Çukurova Delta, Turkey. Thirty‐six of the 45 loci were polymorphic with observed heterozygosity varying between 0.22 and 0.93. Genotypes of individuals of known sex indicated that two loci were sex‐linked (Calex‐26 is located on the Z chromosome and Calex‐31 on the W chromosome). Additionally, we tested all loci for amplification in four other species of Charadridae (Kittlitz's plover, Madagascar plover, three‐banded plover and white‐fronted plover). Habitat use has important consequences for avian reproductive success and survival. In coastal areas with recreational activity, human disturbance may limit use of otherwise suitable habitat. Snowy plovers Charadrius nivosus have a patchy breeding distribution along the coastal areas on the Florida Panhandle, USA. Our goal was to determine the relative effects of seasonal human disturbance and habitat requirements on snowy plover habitat use. We surveyed 303 sites for snowy plovers, human disturbance, and habitat features between January and July 2009 and 2010. We made multiple visits during three different sampling periods that corresponded to snowy plover breeding: pre‐breeding, incubation, and brood‐rearing and used multi‐season occupancy models to examine whether human disturbance, habitat features, or both influenced site occupancy, colonization (probability of transition from an unoccupied site to an occupied site), and extinction (probability of transition from an occupied site to an unoccupied site). Snowy plover site occupancy and colonization was negatively associated with human disturbance and site extinction was positively associated with human disturbance. Interdune vegetation had a negative effect on occupancy and colonization, indicating that plovers were less likely to use areas with uniform, dense vegetation among dunes. Also, dune shape, beach debris, and access to low‐energy foraging areas influenced site occupancy, colonization, and extinction. Plovers used habitat based on beach characteristics that provided stage‐specific resource needs; however, human disturbance was the strongest predictor of site occupancy. In addition, vegetation plantings used to enhance dune rehabilitation may negatively impact plover site occupancy. Management actions that decrease human disturbance, such as symbolic fencing and signage, may increase the amount of breeding habitat available to snowy plovers on the Florida Panhandle and in other areas with high human activity. One of the expected effects of the global warming is changing coastal habitats by accelerating the rate of sea level rise. Coastal habitats support large number of marine and wetland species including shorebirds (plovers, sandpipers and allies). In this study, we investigate how coastal habitats may be impacted by sea level rise in the Farasan Islands, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We use Kentish plover Charadrius alexandrinus – a common coastal breeding shorebird – as an ecological model species to predict the influence of sea level rise. We found that any rise of sea level is likely to inundate 11% of Kentish plover nests. In addition, 5% of the coastal areas of Farasan Islands, which support 26% of Kentish plover nests, will be flooded, if sea level rises by one metre. Our results are constrained by the availability of data on both elevation and bird populations. Therefore, we recommend follow-up studies to model the impacts of sea level rise using different elevation scenarios, and the establishment of a monitoring programme for breeding shorebirds and seabirds in Farasan Islands to assess the impact of climate change on their populations.  相似文献

Macrobenthic fauna and sediment structure were studied at 6 stations from June 1979 to April 1981. The investigations were carried out in the outer estuary of the River Elbe at depths of 15–38 m near a sewage sludge dumping site. The sediment near this area consisted of a high portion of silt. Usually, very few species and small numbers of individuals were found near that dumping ground. During summer 1980, a mass development ofAbra alba and several polychaete species caused an increase in species number which broke down during the following winter. The mass development observed in the study area was apparently not directly caused by the sludge dumping itself, but reflects the natural variability of the community structure. The number of species recorded was significantly correlated with a grain size fraction>31 μm, especially in summer. The seasonal and spatial fluctuation of the benthic community could be well documented by the abundance per species (N/S index). The Shannon-Wiener-Index (H′) and eveness (J) were also useful indicators of community variability. The log-normal distribution did not show the seasonal and the spatial differences of the stations. Possible reasons are discussed. The biomass at the stations near the dumping area was less except during the mass development ofA. alba. The average individual weight (B/N) was shown to be a good indicator of population fluctuations; polychaete biomass was positively correlated to a grain size fraction≦6 μm, that of molluscs to a grain size fraction>31 μm.   相似文献

The fecundity and hatching success of Acartia clausi were analysed at fixed salinity sites (35, 34 and 33 psu) in two nearby estuaries (Bilbao and Urdaibai, Basque coast, Bay of Biscay) from March to June 1997. Field incubations were conducted to estimate egg production rates and hatching success, and the size of eggs and experimental females measured. Water temperature and dissolved oxygen saturation were also determined, as well as seston samples to quantify food abundance and quality. Between-estuary and within-estuary differences were tested statistically, and correlation and regression analyses were used to determine relationships between reproductive and environmental variables. Egg production rates were higher in the organically enriched estuary of Bilbao; this denoting that food supply controls the fertility of A. clausi in these systems. Temporal patterns of egg production differed between estuaries, and were associated with different nutritional factors in each estuary. Within the salinity range analysed, egg production reached higher values at intermediate salinity (≈34 psu) in both estuaries. This was interpreted as the result of the interaction between the positive effect of food increase, and the negative effect of physicochemical conditions with decreasing salinity. Egg size variations mainly occurred temporally in relation to female size, but no clear trade-off between egg size and egg number was observed in any case. A drop in hatching success in Bilbao, mainly in waters of <34 psu, was related to the oxygen depletion caused by organic pollution. This indicates that organic enrichment in Bilbao has opposite effects on the reproductive success, because it enhances egg production but reduces offspring survival.  相似文献

The Madagascar plover Charadrius thoracicus is a shorebird endemic to western Madagascar, currently classified as globally vulnerable. It is restricted to specialized wetland habitats that are increasingly threatened by humans. To inform future conservation measures for this poorly known species, we develop a predictive habitat suitability map and use this map to estimate the size of the Madagascar plover population. We integrate spatially referenced presence-only observations of Madagascar plovers with Landsat data, elevation data and measures of distance to settlements and the coast to produce a habitat suitability model using ecological niche factor analysis. Validation of this model using a receiver operating characteristic plot suggests that it is at least 84% accurate in predicting suitable sites. We then use our estimate of total area of suitable habitat above a critical suitability threshold and data on Madagascar plover density in suitable sites to estimate the total population size to derive a total population estimate of 3100±396 standard error individuals.
