Caudal courtship glands (CCGs) are sexually dimorphic glands described in the skin of the dorsal tail base of some male salamanders in the genera Desmognathus, Eurycea, and Plethodon in the family Plethodontidae. These glands are believed to deliver pheromones to females during courtship, when the female rests her chin on the dorsal tail base during the stereotypic tail straddling walk unique to plethodontids. Although CCGs have been studied histologically, no investigations of their ultrastructure have been made. This article presents the first study on the fine structure and seasonal variation of CCGs, using the plethodontid Plethodon cinereus. The CCGs vary seasonally in height and secretory activity. The mature secretory granules observed in males collected in October and April consist of oval, biphasic granules that are eosinophilic and give positive reactions to periodic acid‐Schiff for neutral carbohydrates but do not stain for acidic mucosusbtances or proteins with alcian blue and bromphenol blue, respectively. Granular glands, some of which contain mucous demilunes, are twice as large as CCGs, are syncytial (unlike CCGs), and stain for proteins. Mucous glands are similar in size to CCGs, but are basophilic, show no seasonal variation in secretory activity, and stain positive for acidic mucosubstances. CCGs do not resemble cytologically the sexually dimorphic mental glands of some plethodontids, which contain round or oval granules filled with an electron‐dense amorphous substance. The CCGs are similar histologically to sexually dimorphic skin glands described in some anurans, but more comparative work is needed. J. The microanatomy of the testes and testicular ducts (rete testis, ductuli efferentes, ductus epididymis and ductus deferens) of Leiolepis ocellata (Agamidae) was investigated using light microscopy including histochemistry. Each testis contains seminiferous tubules and interstitial tissues. The former house spermatogenic cells (spermatogonia A & B, preleptotene, primary and secondary spermatocytes, spermatids (steps 1–8) and spermatozoa) and Sertoli cells, while the latter comprise peritubular and intersitial tissues. The rete testis is an anastomosing duct, having intratesticular and extratesticular portions. The proximal region of ductuli efferentes has wider outer ductal and luminal diameters than those of the distal region. The convoluted ductus epididymis is subdivided into four regions (initial segment, caput, corpus and cauda), based on the ductal diameter, epithelium characteristics and cell components. The ductus deferens has the greatest diameter and is divided into the ductal and ampulla ductus deferens. The ductal portion is subdivided into the proximal and distal regions, based on the epithelium types and ductal diameters. The ampulla ductus deferens is a fibromuscular tube, having numerous mucosal folds projecting into the lumen. Spermiophagy is detectable in the ductus epididymis and ductus deferens. The present results contribute to improved fundamental knowledge on the microanatomy of the reptilian reproductive system.  相似文献

Imaging sebaceous glands and evaluating morphometric parameters are important for diagnosis and treatment of serum problems. In this article, we investigate the feasibility of high-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) in combination with deep learning assisted automatic identification for these purposes. Specifically, with a spatial resolution of 2.3 μm × 6.2 μm (axial × lateral, in air), OCT is capable of clearly differentiating sebaceous gland from other skin structures and resolving the sebocyte layer. In order to achieve efficient and timely imaging analysis, a deep learning approach built upon ResNet18 is developed to automatically classify OCT images (with/without sebaceous gland), with a classification accuracy of 97.9%. Based on the result of automatic identification, we further demonstrate the possibility to measure gland size, sebocyte layer thickness and gland density.  相似文献

The rostellar apparatus of Fernandezia spinosissima is examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. It is described as composed of rostellum, pseudoproboscis, and two groups of glandular syncytia, one in the rostellum and the other inwards to the rostellum and the pseudoproboscis. The rostellum is a discoid cushion with muscular walls. There are numerous thin vertical muscular fibres and glandular syncytia inside it. Its tegument has slender microtriches. Peripherally, the rostellum is encircled by thin muscle fibres that protrude anteriorly between rostellar hooks and group posteriorly to form retractors. The rostellar hook guards are associated with a complicated network of muscles and nerves. The pseudoproboscis is a thick-walled ring around the apical part of the scolex adjacent to the rostellum. Its tegument has microtriches with modified spines that are interpreted as accessory spines. The walls of the pseudoproboscis possess a loose structure of parallel muscular fibres and glandular processes. The glandular syncytia, interpreted as modified tegumental perikarya, have basophilic cytoplasm and stain positively for protein and carbohydrate. They form cellular processes, which protrude to reach to the tegument. These results provide structural details characterising one of the rostellar types recognized in the order Cyclophyllidea, i.e. the davaineid rostellar apparatus.  相似文献

The nervous system communicates with peripheral tissues through nerve fibres and the systemic release of hypothalamic and pituitary neurohormones. Communication between the nervous system and the largest human organ, skin, has traditionally received little attention. In particular, the neuro‐regulation of sebaceous glands (SGs), a major skin appendage, is rarely considered. Yet, it is clear that the SG is under stringent pituitary control, and forms a fascinating, clinically relevant peripheral target organ in which to study the neuroendocrine and neural regulation of epithelia. Sebum, the major secretory product of the SG, is composed of a complex mixture of lipids resulting from the holocrine secretion of specialised epithelial cells (sebocytes). It is indicative of a role of the neuroendocrine system in SG function that excess circulating levels of growth hormone, thyroxine or prolactin result in increased sebum production (seborrhoea). Conversely, growth hormone deficiency, hypothyroidism, and adrenal insufficiency result in reduced sebum production and dry skin. Furthermore, the androgen sensitivity of SGs appears to be under neuroendocrine control, as hypophysectomy (removal of the pituitary) renders SGs largely insensitive to stimulation by testosterone, which is crucial for maintaining SG homeostasis. However, several neurohormones, such as adrenocorticotropic hormone and α‐melanocyte‐stimulating hormone, can stimulate sebum production independently of either the testes or the adrenal glands, further underscoring the importance of neuroendocrine control in SG biology. Moreover, sebocytes synthesise several neurohormones and express their receptors, suggestive of the presence of neuro‐autocrine mechanisms of sebocyte modulation. Aside from the neuroendocrine system, it is conceivable that secretion of neuropeptides and neurotransmitters from cutaneous nerve endings may also act on sebocytes or their progenitors, given that the skin is richly innervated. However, to date, the neural controls of SG development and function remain poorly investigated and incompletely understood. Botulinum toxin‐mediated or facial paresis‐associated reduction of human sebum secretion suggests that cutaneous nerve‐derived substances modulate lipid and inflammatory cytokine synthesis by sebocytes, possibly implicating the nervous system in acne pathogenesis. Additionally, evidence suggests that cutaneous denervation in mice alters the expression of key regulators of SG homeostasis. In this review, we examine the current evidence regarding neuroendocrine and neurobiological regulation of human SG function in physiology and pathology. We further call attention to this line of research as an instructive model for probing and therapeutically manipulating the mechanistic links between the nervous system and mammalian skin.  相似文献

A method is described that allows noninvasive identification and quantitative assessment of lipid classes present in sebaceous excretions in rodents. The method relies on direct high-field proton NMR analysis of common group lipid protons in deuterated organic solvent extracts of fur. Extracts from as little as 15 mg of fur from rat, mouse, and hamster provided acceptable results on a 600 MHz NMR equipped with a cryogenically cooled proton-observe probe. In rats, sex- and age-related differences in lipid composition are larger than differences in fur collected from various body regions within an individual and much larger than interanimal differences in age- and sex-matched specimens. The utility of this method to noninvasively monitor drug-induced sebaceous gland atrophy in rodents is demonstrated in rats dosed with a stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) inhibitor. In this model, a 35% reduction in sebum lipids, extracted from fur, was observed. Finally, structural elucidation of cholesta-7,24-dien-3β-ol ester as the most prominent, previously unidentified sebum sterol ester in male Syrian hamsters is described. The utility of this method for drug and cosmetic safety and efficacy assessment is discussed.  相似文献

Sebaceous glands are intriguing glands that are found throughout the human body except on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The true function of these glands has yet to be determined, but there are several theories, including antioxidant effects, antibacterial effects, and transport of pheromones. Sebaceous glands produce lipids that are involved in the pathogenesis of one of the most prevalent diseases of adolescence, acne. Although the majority of lipids produced by the sebaceous gland are also produced in other areas of the body, there are two that are characteristic of the sebaceous gland, wax esters and squalene. This review seeks to present an update on the physiology of the sebaceous glands, with particular emphasis on the production of sebaceous lipids.  相似文献

Immunoreactive vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and substance P (SP) were studied in parotid, submaxillary and sublingual glands of the rat. The concentration of VIP was highest in the submaxillary gland and lowest in the parotid gland. The concentration of SP was highest in the parotid gland; it was at, or below the limit of detection in the sublingual gland. In the parotid gland the total amounts of VIP and SP were reduced by 95% after parasympathetic denervation (section of the auriculo-temporal nerve). In the submaxillary gland the total amounts of the peptides were unchanged after parasympathetic decentralization (section of the chorda-lingual nerve). In this gland the total amount of SP was reduced by 92% and that of VIP by 50%, when the chorda tympani nerve fibres were cut deep into the hilum. Cutting the nerve fibres at the hilum left the total amounts of the peptides unchanged in the submaxillary gland, whereas in the sublingual gland the total amount of VIP was reduced by 70%. Sympathetic denervation did not reduce the total amounts of the peptides. Duct ligation caused gland atrophy. In the parotid gland the total amounts of VIP and SP were reduced by 40%. In the submaxillary gland the same percentage reduction occurred with regard to SP; however, the total amount of VIP was reduced by 99%. The VIP- and SP-containing nerve fibres reach the salivary glands by the parasympathetic nerves. In both submaxillary and sublingual glands a certain fraction of VIP originates within the glands.  相似文献

The larger ducts of the biliary tree contain numerous tubulo-alveolar adnexal glands that are lined with biliary epithelial cells and connected to the bile duct lumen via small glandular canals. Although these peribiliary glands (PBG) were already described in the 19th century, their exact function and role in the pathophysiology and development of cholangiopathies have not become evident until recently. While secretion of serous and mucinous components into the bile was long considered as the main function of PBG, recent studies have identified PBG as an important source for biliary epithelial cell proliferation and renewal. Activation, dilatation, and proliferation of PBG (or the lack thereof) have been associated with various cholangiopathies. Moreover, PBG have been identified as niches of multipotent stem/progenitor cells with endodermal lineage traits. This has sparked research interest in the role of PBG in the pathogenesis of various cholangiopathies as well as bile duct malignancies. Deeper understanding of the regenerative capacity of the PBG may contribute to the development of novel regenerative therapeutics for previously untreatable hepatobiliary diseases. Nesting males of the grass goby Zosterisessor ophiocephalus showed bouts, with intervals of c. 30 min duration, of upside-down movements while rubbing its genital papilla onto the ceiling of its burrow. Such behaviour was shown during female courting and spawning, and even after female removal. Observations showed that this behaviour was associated with the release of a sperm trail on the substratum and clumped spermatozoa in water, agglutinated with a mercury-bromophenol blue and PAS positive glycoprotein secretion of the sperm duct glands. Agglutination in the secretion delayed the activation of spermatozoa and contributed a steady supply, for up to 40 min, of motile spermatozoa during prolonged egg laying by the female. Sperm released before egg laying achieved c. 50% fertilization success compared with nearly 100% obtained if the sperm was released during egg laying. The sperm release behaviour may improve the nest owner's reproductive success against intruders or sneakers. It also allows defence of the nest while the female is spawning and may allow the male to court other females in the proximity.  相似文献

Preliminary results obtained from histological analyses of the male reproductive organs, supplemented with field and behavioural data, indicate that Sufflogobius bibarbatus, a small, slow growing gobiid exhibiting low fecundity, which plays an important role in the food web off Namibia, where large areas of the shelf are hypoxic, spawns demersally. Large males defend benthic nests, possibly at the edge of the hypoxic shelf. Male reproductive strategy appears to be flexible, and tentative evidence to suggest that polygyny and sneaking may also occur is presented.  相似文献

The fine structure of the seminal vesicle and reproductive accessory glands was investigated in Bittacidae of Mecoptera using light and transmission electron microscopy. The male reproductive system of Bittacidae mainly consists of a pair of testes, a pair of vasa deferentia, and an ejaculatory sac. The vas deferens is greatly expanded for its middle and medio-posterior parts to form a well-developed seminal vesicle. The seminal vesicle is composed of layers of developed muscles and a mono-layered epithelium surrounding the small central lumen. The epithelium is rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, and secretes vesicles and granules into the central lumen by merocrine mechanisms. A pair of elongate mesodermal accessory glands opens into the lateral side of the seminal vesicles. The accessory glands are similar to the seminal vesicle in structure, also consisting of layers of muscle fibres and a mono-layered elongated epithelium, the cells of which contain numerous cisterns of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, and a few Golgi complexes. The epithelial cells of accessory glands extrude secretions via apocrine and merocrine processes. The seminal vesicles mainly serve the function of secretion rather than temporarily storing spermatozoa. The sperm instead are temporarily stored in the epididymis, the greatly coiled distal portion of the vas deferens.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the effects of nest availability and body size on changes in male mating tactics from sneaking to nest‐holding in the dusky frillgoby Bathygobius fuscus. In the field, the body size of nest‐holding males decreased from early to mid‐breeding season, suggesting the possibility of a change in the tactics of sneaker males to nest‐holding. Many sneaker males did not use vacant spawning nests even when size‐matched nests were available, but they continued to reproduce as sneakers. Similarly, in aquarium experiments with available vacant nests, some sneaker males became nest‐holders irrespective of their body size, but some did not. These results showed that nest availability is not a limiting factor for changes in tactics by sneaker males in this species. Because tactic‐unchanged sneaker males were co‐housed with larger nest‐holding males in the tanks, the body size of nearby nest‐holding males may have affected the decision to change tactics for sneaker males. Moreover, smaller individuals among tactic‐changed males tended to spend more time until spawning, probably because they had relatively larger costs and smaller benefits of reproduction as nest‐holding males compared to larger males.  相似文献

Abstract. The effect of ox skin secretions (sebum) on the behaviour of tsetse flies, Glossina spp., was investigated in the field using electrified targets, some of which operated intermittently, and by direct observations of flies landing on treated and untreated cloth. As the off-period of an intermittently operating electrified target increased, the catch decreased both with and without the sebum present. Targets with sebum always caught more flies than targets without sebum, but there was no evidence to suggest that sebum increased the duration of stay on a target. Direct observations of flies on cloth targets revealed that for both species the presence of sebum reduced the duration of contact and for G. pallidipes the number of return contacts was increased. The results from direct observations were used to predict the number of repeat landings that would need to be made by flies in order to account for the catch of tsetse at intermittently electrified targets.  相似文献

A NMR spectroscopic method is described that enables the quantitation of specific lipid classes and components, independent of fatty acid composition. We demonstrate this method for measuring cholesterol, squalene, and pools of sterol esters, wax esters (WEs), and triglyceride (TG) components in sebum and meibum. When 600 MHz NMR equipment is used in conjunction with highly sensitive cryogenically cooled probes, this method has adequate sensitivity, and for some applications, advantages over commonly used HPLC-evaporative light-scattering detection and mass spectrometry-based approaches. This method is shown to be useful for preclinical and clinical monitoring of the efficacy of sebum-reducing agents in animals and humans. In Syrian hamsters, 3% topical flutamide and 20 mg/kg oral isotretinoin reduced sterol esters by 18.7% and 30.0%, respectively, and reduced WEs by 32.9% and 31.8%, respectively, as measured in a punch biopsy of the ear. In a 72 patient clinical methodology study, the assay delivered reproducible and noninvasive measurements of WEs, cholesteryl esters, TGs, and squalene from Sebutape skin blots. The quantitative results of sebum analysis obtained by the NMR method correlate well with those obtained with HPLC-based approaches. This approach may be broadly applicable to cases in which fatty acid-independent quantification of lipid classes is desired.  相似文献

The microanatomical and histological structure of Eocene Antarctic stem penguin tarsometatarsi is examined in order to characterise the bone microstructure. Eight adult tarsometatarsi belonging to eight fossil species (Palaeeudyptes gunnari, Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, Anthropornis grandis, Anthropornis nordenskjoeldi, Archaeospheniscus wimani, Marambiornis exilis, Delphinornis arctowskii and Delphinornis larseni) collected from the Antarctic A. nordenskjoeldi Biozone (La Meseta Formation, ~34.2 Ma) were examined. The thin sections revealed a distinctive microanatomical variation among taxa. Whereas Anthropornis spp., A. wimani and P. gunnari possess massive, clearly osteosclerotic bones (medullary cavities absent or strongly reduced), the bones of Delphinornis spp., P. klekowski and M. exilis exhibit well-developed medullary cavities. The cortical bone in all the specimens consists of primary, well-vascularised fibro-lamellar bone and variable amounts of secondary bone. Medullary cavities are coated by a thick layer of lamellar bone tissue and coarse compacted cancellous bone. Although several causes can explain the striking microanatomical variation (e.g. ontogeny), we interpret that such variation is related to differential adaptations to the aquatic life, for which taxa with more massive bones were possibly adapted to deeper and more prolonged diving excursions.  相似文献

The ozopores of cosmetid harvestmen rest upon lateral projections of the carapace, have simple or highly reduced channels, and are partially obscured by enlarged dorsal processes associated with coxae I and II. Rather than use scent gland secretions to form a chemical shield on the dorsum, the cosmetid harvestman exhibits a unique defensive behavior known as “leg dabbing” in which the distal tip of tarsus I or II is dipped into fluid that accumulate at the base of coxa II and the droplet on the tarsus is pointed toward the predator. Relatively little is known about interspecific variation in ozopore morphology among cosmetid harvestmen. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to examine the ozopores of males and females of nine species as well as those of antepenultimate nymphs for two species. Among adults, we found differences between species in the shapes of the ozopores (round or subtriangular), the morphology of the dorsal and lateral channels (if present), and the relative size, shape and armature of the dorsal posterior process (dpp) of coxa I and the dorsal anterior process (dap) of coxa II. Our observations suggest that the morphology of dpp I and dap II could be sources for systematic characters in future phylogenetic studies of the Cosmetidae. We observed ontogenetic differences but relatively little intersexual variation in the morphology of the ozopore. The ozopores of nymphs are generally more oval than those of adults and the opening of the ozopore of the nymph is less obstructed, if at all, by the dorsal coxal processes of legs I–II. These morphological differences suggest that nymphs may use scent gland secretions in a manner different from that of adults.  相似文献
