ABSTRACT

This paper looks at the attitudes that scientists hold toward their use of animals, and at some implications for the welfare of laboratory animals. The framework for this analysis is recent changes in the law regulating the use of animals in British science. We note how ambivalent many scientists are about the way they perceive the animals they use, and the moral dilemmas such use poses. We argue, however, that the legislation itself cannot mediate improvements in animal welfare, as it is inevitably policed by the scientific community itself and thus dependent upon values and social relationships within science. We also argue that debates about the promotion of lab animals' welfare tend to use the distancing stance of science; they focus on scientific studies of welfare and behavior, but ignore the context. An important part of that context is the relationships between humans and animals in the lab, which should be taken into account more fully if animals are to benefit.  相似文献

We examined the relationship of leukocyte colony-stimulating activity (CSA) in vitro to neutrophil count in vivo. Using a standard two-layer system, cultures of 106 leukocytes were assayed for their ability to stimulate colony formation by human bone marrow colony-forming cells. The total leukocyte CSA per ml (TLCSA) of blood varied directly with the blood neutrophil count in a group of patients with a wide range in blood neutrophil count, and in two patients recovering from neutropenia in whom serial observations were made. In the latter two patients the rise in TLCSA did not antedate the rise in blood neutrophil count, suggesting that blood leukocyte colony-stimulating factor (CSF) per se probably has little biologic significance. However, release into the circulation of cells which generate CSF could be an important way of controlling the amount of CSF acting within the marrow. In one patient the CSA of dialyzed serum increased after the rise in TLCSA, while undialyzed serum contained no CSA.  相似文献

Little is known about disease and genetic variation in aquatic mammalian species such as whales. In this paper human HLA class I and class 11 probes were used to study major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes from two species of whale: Fin (Balaenoptera physalus) and Sei (B. borealis). Stronger signals were obtained on whale than on equivalent concentrations of mouse DNA. Evidence was obtained for severalDRB-related genes, aDNA gene, oneDQA gene, and multiple class I genes in whales. Interestingly, the whale genes, from the small panel studied, were less polymorphic than those of humans or mice. The aquatic environment of this mammalian species may be a unique factor in shaping its immune response through the MHC.  相似文献

The tryptic digestion of beta-conglycinin was studied by the pH-stat method and sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. The proteolysis of the protein was not affected by the change of ionic strength. This property was distinct from that of glycinin which is degraded rapidly at a low ionic strength.

Five stable fragments were generated in the degradation course. Two kinds of beta-conglycinin, one of which consisted of only the beta-subunit and the other of only the alpha’ and alpha-subunit, were isolated to elucidate the original subunit of the fragments. Two fragments (AT-1 and AT-2) from the alpha’ and alpha-subunit, and three fragments (BT-2-BT-4) from the beta-subunit were generated. The molecular weights of the fragments were similar to those of the glycinin fragments. From the fragment pattern of the beta-subunit, the presence of two types of the beta-subunit was expected.  相似文献
