The aquatic larvae of anisopteran dragonflies possess tracheal gills located in the rectum. Using stereological methods, we estimated the morphometric diffusing capacity for oxygen (D(MO2)) across the gill epithelium, i.e., from rectal water to the gill tracheoles, in the larvae of Aeshna cyanea. A 271-mg larva has a total branchial surface area of approximately 12 cm(2). Tracheoles make up 6% of the epithelial volume of the gills; the harmonic mean thickness of the water-tracheolar diffusion barrier is 0.27 microm and consists mainly of cuticle. The calculated D(MO2) is 23.0 microl min(-1) g(-1) kPa(-1), which, using published values for oxygen consumption in a similar species, would result in a mean driving pressure of 0.2 kPa at rest and 1.3 kPa during activity. Since these driving pressures are similar to those reported for other arthropods, we conclude that the D(MO2) of the gill is not rate-limiting for aerobic metabolism in Aeshna cyanea larvae. Laboratory colonies of cotton bollworm larvae, Helicoverpa armigera, kept at 20 degrees C under a photoperiod of L:D=10:14 were fed on five host plants (cotton, corn, kidney bean, tobacco and tomato) and an artificial diet (control) to determine the effects of larval host quality on survival and pupal over-wintering preparedness. A separate experiment showed that diapausing pupae weighed more and contained greater nutrient stores than did non-diapausing pupae. Diapausing pupae reared on different host plants showed significant differences in terms of over-wintering reserve storage, and degree of cold-hardiness (extent of low-molecular-weight substances and SCPs), and survivorship. The more nutrients the host plant had, the more the pupae weighed and the higher the levels of total lipids and glycogen. Body water content was also significantly affected by larval food quality. The mean pupal super-cooling capacities varied significantly from -16.7 to -18.9 degrees C according to host plants the larvae feed on, and these significantly related to water content, pupal weight, lipid and glycogen content, and the levels of glycerol. Levels of trehalose, glycerol, and inositol, which were mainly low-molecular-weight substances, showed no significant differences among different host plants, except for trehalose. Pupal mortality varied from 39.7% on corn to 3.3% on the artificial diet, which was significantly related to pupal weight, total lipid content, trehalose levels, and super-cooling points. These results suggest that larval food quality can affect survival and influence the over-wintering preparedness of the cotton bollworm.  相似文献

Populations of European grapevine moth Lobesia botrana Denis & Schiffermüller and its larval parasitoids were studied for two consecutive years on an experimental insecticide-free vineyard in France planted with adjacent plots of five grape cultivars (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sémillon) using a natural L. botrana population during the first year, and a natural population supplemented with artificially inoculated individuals during the second year. Levels of natural populations of larval parasitoids were measured by their parasitism rate. The ichneumonid Campoplex capitator Aubert was the most common species collected from L. botrana larvae. Its incidence was higher during the spring compared to summer. The overall parasitism rate found on the experimental vineyard varied from 23% in 2000 to 53% in 2001, and was mainly due to C. capitator. Parasitism was not affected by the grape cultivar on which the host developed but was positively correlated with the host density, per bunch or per stock, suggesting that among the five grape cultivars tested, C. capitator females probably do not discriminate between hosts feeding on different grape cultivars, but rather the densities of L. botrana larvae.  相似文献

Laboratory colonies of cotton bollworm larvae, Helicoverpa armigera, were kept at 20 °C under a photoperiod of L:D = 10:14 and fed on three host plants (cotton, tobacco, kidney bean) and an artificial diet (control) to determine the dynamic effects of larval host quality on over-wintering physiology and mortality. Energy reserves (glycogen and lipid), super-cooling points (SCPs), low-molecular-weight sugars, temperature, and mortality were monitored from November 2002 to April 2003. Lipid content did not change much for each group during over-wintering, but differed according to larval host plants. Larval host plants obviously influence the amount of glycogen, as does time of year: glycogen was lowest in February and increased in early spring. During winter, the mean pupal SCPs increased the most in February, then decreased, and were also affected by larval host plant, i.e. over-wintering pupae reared on kidney bean had the highest SCPs. Levels of glycerol and inositol differed significantly among host plants and months, which peaked in February. Pupal mortality also varied according to larval host plants and time: pupae reached their highest mortality in March and showed host plant differences in January. Records show that February was the coldest month during the period we observed, which corresponded closely to changes in over-wintering characteristics.  相似文献

The influence of predators on mosquito populations may be direct through predation or indirect through sub‐lethal responses of adult mosquitoes in life history traits such as oviposition behavior. In New Zealand, the backswimmer, Anisops wakefieldi, is a common predator of mosquito larvae found in temporary and permanent water bodies. We predicted that the New Zealand native mosquito, Culex pervigilans, whose larvae are vulnerable to predation of Anisops, would likely avoid the containers with the presence of Anisops or its kairomone. We established temporary water containers without predators, free‐roaming predators, caged predators (which were unable to eat mosquitoes), or containers from which predators were removed immediately prior to the experiment (these containers would have remnant kairomones from the predators). Each treatment with Anisops had predator densities of one, three, or nine Anisops. Contrary to our predictions, when choosing oviposition habitats, Cx. pervigilans appeared to ignore the presence of free‐roaming Anisops, caged Anisops, and water with Anisops kairomone. We thus observed no significant differences between the numbers of egg rafts laid by Cx. pervigilans in the different predator treatments nor were the number of egg rafts significantly affected by the density of predators. Rather than the presence of predators, environmental factors including temperature, humidity, and pressure were significantly correlated with mosquito oviposition. These mosquitoes appeared to either ignore the presence of the predator, had no ability to detect the presence of predators, or perhaps the cues from Anisops predators were not sufficiently strong enough to alarm these mosquitoes. We argue that the mosquito has not evolved the ability to detect the presence of these predators while ovipositing.  相似文献

The lappet moth, Streblote panda Hübner [1820] (Lasiocampidae), is a common species found in blueberry, Vaccinium spp. (Ericaceae) fields of Western Andalusia. The biology of this species as well as the extent to which its larvae can use and survive on blueberry is unknown. In this study, the suitability to larvae of several blueberry cultivars was studied. Larvae were grown under controlled laboratory conditions on excised foliage of six blueberry cultivars. Survival, development, and food use were determined for first and fifth instars. According to our results, blueberry has become an alternative host plant for S. panda in southwestern Andalusia. Low growth rates and efficiencies of use of food were observed. Lower gross efficiency of growth was found for larvae fed blueberry 'Sharpblue', despite a higher apparent digestibility of this cultivar. Larvae reared on this cultivar had the highest mortality, increased developmental time, and used a greater part of metabolism for maintenance. Herbivore pressure may be increased with the widespread planting of the most suitable cultivars 'Misty' and 'O'Neal', whereas 'Sharpblue' and'Climax' seem to be the least suitable host plants. These data provide useful information for planning and managing blueberry orchards in the presence of S. panda populations.  相似文献

Settlement of barnacle larvae is believed to be induced by the chemical cues present in their surrounding environment. Here, an investigation was carried out on the effects of sixteen different mono‐amino acids with acidic, basic, uncharged polar and nonpolar side chains, and GABA on larval settlement of the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite. Settlement inducing activity by nine mono‐amino acids, viz. asparagine, glutamine, tyrosine, serine, glycine, tryptophan, leucine, isoleucine and valine (but not phenylalanine) with uncharged polar and nonpolar side chains was observed. Of these, the most active mono‐amino acids were serine, leucine and isoleucine, which were effective at a threshhold of 1.0 × 10‐7 M. On the other hand, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, GABA, and the basic mono‐amino acids lysine, arginine and histidine did not have any inducing effect. These results suggest that uncharged polar and non‐polar end group of the amino acid chain play an important role in inducing the settlement process in cyprids.  相似文献

In short-run experiments herring larvae at the end of the yolk sac stage (SL 6.5 to 8.5 m) were fed with maize and potato starch to investigate the effect of particle size on food selection. About 20% of the larvae ingested these particles during the experiments. In the case of maize starch (3 to 26 μm grain size) the size classes from 14 to 25 μm and in the case of potato starch (5 to 80 μm) the size classes larger than 29 μm were preferred. The highest numbers of ingested grains per larva were 150 maize starch grains and 57 potato starch grains. The selective uptake of these size classes leads to the conclusion that planktonic organisms in this size range—in other words mostly protozoans—may play an important role as a first food source of herring larvae.  相似文献

It is expected that females preferentially oviposit on plant hosts that allow for optimal larval performance. However, this expectation contradicts empirical evidence where adults do not always choose the best host for their descendants. Recent evidence suggests that females’ host selection depends on the number of potential hosts. Females from oligophagous species seem to be able to choose an appropriate host in terms of larval performance, whereas in polyphagous species, adult oviposition preference is not related with larval performance. This suggests that larvae in polyphagous species could be taking a more active role in host selection than their mothers. Here, we evaluated the oviposition preference and the larval preference and performance of two polyphagous species of economic importance, Copitarsia decolora (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Cuculliinae) and Peridroma saucia (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Noctuinae), on eight species of cultivated plants. In laboratory and greenhouse choice assays, we tested adult preference for oviposition and larval preference at 1 and 24 h. Larval performance was measured in terms of survival to adulthood, length of larval period, and pupal weight. We found that both adult females and larvae actively choose their hosts and that the larval preference toward the hosts is related to the females’ preference in both herbivore species. However, the females and larvae did not preferentially select the host with the best larval performance, indicating that larval performance is not related to female or larval preference and that other selective pressures are influencing the choice of the host plant in these two species.  相似文献

This study concerns the parasite-host associations of water mite larvae and their chironomid hosts in a small stream on the North German Plain. The different feeding sites on the host were tested as to whether they represented a strategy of the parasites regarding host partitioning. The attachment sites of nine ectoparasitic water mite species were observed in detail: Aturus fontinalis, Atractides nodipalpis, Feltria rouxi, Hygrobates nigromaculatus, Protzia eximia, Sperchonopsis verrucosa, Sperchon clupeifer, S. setiger and Lebertia inaequalis. Aturus fontinalis, A. nodipalpis, F. rouxi and H. nigromaculatus distinctly preferred sites on the abdomen of the host, whereas the other species preferred feeding sites on the thorax. The four species that preferentially attached to the abdomen of the host showed a distinct specificity for selected segmental and/or intersegmental regions. All species differed in their sites along the length of the abdomen. The order of attachment on the abdominal segments was, from anterior to posterior: H. nigromaculatus, F. rouxi, A. fontinalis and A. nodipalpis. The sites were analysed with regard to segmental and intersegmental attachment, the proportion of dorsal and ventral sites and the differences between attachment to different host species. Larvae attached to their hosts as single individuals showed only slight differences from the sites of mites on hosts that carried many mite larvae. The finding that less than 10% of the chironomids were parasitized by more than one water mite species suggested that, at least in the zoocoenosis of the studied collecting site, the interspecific competition for attachment sites was not strong. However, the specificity of attachment sites clearly had the potential of diminishing competition between water mite species by host partitioning. Intra- and interspecific competition for preferred sites and preparasitic constraints are discussed.  相似文献

Summary

The life cycle of the Batrachospermales (freshwater florideophyte red such as Batrachospermum, Lemanea) is a shortened variant of the ‘normal’ marine florideophyte life cycle. The perennial Chantransia diploid phase is microscopic and encrusting. Each winter it produces one or more semi-erect haploid gametophytes by vegetative meiosis. Gamete production and fertilization is followed by production of diploid carposporophytes; these produce diploid carpospores which disperse, and regenerate the Chantransia phase. The question of the extent to which the Chantransia phase contributes resources to the gametophyte was approached by physiological-hydrodynamic modelling. These computations suggest that the photosynthetic rates in situ on an area basis are 20 times greater for the gametophyte than the Chantransia phase; this agrees with the observed ratios of peak biomass. The conclusion is that the Chantransia phase has a negligible role in provisioning the growing gametophyte, and that the role of the Chantransia phase is to occupy space with living biomass throughout the year, including exposure at summer drawdown, and (perhaps) by dispersal via production of monospores. A similar conclusion is arrived at on the basis of biomass data for the role of the perennial ‘mushroom’ phase of the semelparous marine Fucalean brown alga Himanthalia elongata in relation to the short-lived but much larger reproductive receptacles.  相似文献

In complex life cycles, larval helminths typically migrate from the gut to exploit the tissues of their intermediate hosts. Yet the definitive host's gut is overwhelmingly the most favoured site for adult helminths to release eggs. Vertebrate nematodes with one-host cycles commonly migrate to a site in the host away from the gut before returning to the gut for reproduction; those with complex cycles occupy sites exclusively in the intermediate host's tissues or body spaces, and may or may not show tissue migration before (typically) returning to the gut in the definitive host. We develop models to explain the patterns of exploitation of different host sites, and in particular why larval helminths avoid the intermediate host's gut, and adult helminths favour it. Our models include the survival costs of migration between sites, and maximise fitness (=expected lifetime number of eggs produced by a given helminth propagule) in seeking the optimal strategy (host gut versus host tissue exploitation) under different growth, mortality, transmission and reproductive rates in the gut and tissues (i.e. sites away from the gut). We consider the relative merits of the gut and tissues, and conclude that (i) growth rates are likely to be higher in the tissues, (ii) mortality rates possibly higher in the gut (despite the immunological inertness of the gut lumen), and (iii) that there are very high benefits to egg release in the gut. The models show that these growth and mortality relativities would account for the common life history pattern of avoidance of the intermediate host's gut because the tissues offer a higher growth rate/mortality rate ratio (discounted by the costs of migration), and make a number of testable predictions. Though nematode larvae in paratenic hosts usually migrate to the tissues, unlike larvae in intermediates, they sometimes remain in the gut, which is predicted since in paratenics mortality rate and migration costs alone determine the site to be exploited.  相似文献

Pharyngodon medinae García-Calvente, 1948 (Nematoda: Pharyngodonidae) is redescribed from Podarcis pityusensis (Bosca, 1883) (Sauria: Lacertidae) of the Balearic Islands (Spain) and confirmed as a member of the genus Skrjabinodon Inglis, 1968. A systematic review of S. medinae and closely related species is also given. Parathelandros canariensis is referred to Skrjabinodon as a new combination and Parathelandros Magzoub et al., 1980 is dismissed as a junior homonym of Parathelandros Baylis, 1930.  相似文献

Taurine (beta-aminoethane sulfonic acid) is present in high concentrations in tissue of planula larvae of the marine hydrozoan Hydractinia echinata. It has been proposed to function as a stabilizer of the larval state mainly because of the previous findings that larvae induced to undergo metamorphosis appeared to lose most of their taurine, and taurine added to the medium antagonizes metamorphosis. Release of taurine was assumed to be a necessary prerequisite for the onset of metamorphosis. The primary aim of the present study was to confirm this by determination of taurine release accompanying metamorphosis induction by inducers other than CsCl. However, a decrease of the larval tissue taurine content was not found, irrespective of schedule of treatment and the inducer applied. The cause for this difference from the preceding study could not be clarified. Taurine in the medium, even at low concentration, causes elevated tissue concentrations high enough to cause general adverse effects on cell physiology. In order to ascribe an alternative function to taurine in H. echinata variations of the free amino acid pool under osmotic stress were examined. The tissue concentration of beta-alanine strongly correlates with the salinity of the medium. Large amounts of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are present in animals adapted to high salinity. Taurine content appears not to depend on osmolarity of the medium. Nevertheless, taurine may constitute the foundation of the cellular organic osmolyte system of the H. echinata larva.  相似文献

Population density (number of propagules/l) of Pythium in the irrigation water has been studied in the reservoirs of the Poniente Almeriense (Almería, Spain). These reservoirs are habitually used in the watering of the greenhouse crops of the district. From October 1994 to August 1997, 17 sampling campaigns were carried out, 23 reservoirs were visited and three of them were sampled during three years. 300 ml of superficial water were sampled and analyzed in the laboratory by means of filtration with paper Whatman number 1, placed on Ponchet selective medium and incubated at 20 degrees C. Data of the physical-chemical characteristics of the water (temperature, pH, CE, anions and cations) were taken. The geographical and seasonal distributions of the population were correlated with the analyzed characteristics. The more frequent densities were among 0-100 propagules/l. A population's seasonality was observed, with a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. When Cl- concentration was higher, the number of propagules/l was smaller.  相似文献

When ecologists study organisms with multiphasic life cycles, they must often confront the problem of which phase to scrutinize. In principle, the dynamics and interactions of all stages could play a major role in the regulation of adult populations and species assemblages. In practice, however, the roles of larger and more sedentary phases - being easier to count and manipulate than motile propagules - have been emphasized. Nonetheless, several recent studies on the small, dispersing larval phase of marine invertebrate life cycles reach the conclusion that the spatial distribution and supply of propagules can control the distribution and abundance of populations of benthic adults. To some, the present emphasis on planktonic propagules amounts to a resurrection of ideas developed during a long and rich history of larval biology. To others, studies of demographic and ecological connections between larval and adult populations represent a substantial revision of ecological paradigms.  相似文献
