Ever since the first observations in the late 1960s, Cycliophora were found exclusively living epizoically on lobsters belonging to the family Nephropidae. The complex cycliophoran life cycle, with alternation of asexual and sexual generations, takes place only in the microhabitat provided by the host mouthparts. Herein, we report the first evidence of a symbiotic relationship between cycliophorans and organisms other than nephropid lobsters, namely, the harpacticoid copepods. Two specimens of copepods associated with cycliophoran life cycle stages were collected from the segmental mouthparts of a European lobster, Homarus gammarus. One of the copepods carried two feeding stages with long stalks, which probably belong to an undescribed Symbion sp., while the other copepod was found bearing an undetermined settled stage. We discuss the implications of these novel observations for the understanding of the Cycliophora life cycle and their dispersion abilities.  相似文献

Chondracanthid copepods parasitise many teleost species and have a mobile larval stage. It has been suggested that copepod parasites, with free-living infective stages that infect hosts by attaching to their external surfaces, will have co-evolved with their hosts. We examined copepods from the genus Chondracanthus and their teleost hosts for evidence of a close co-evolutionary association by comparing host and parasite phylogenies using TreeMap analysis. In general, significant co-speciation was observed and instances of host switching were rare. The prevalence of intra-host speciation events was high relative to other such studies and may relate to the large geographical distances over which hosts are spread.  相似文献

Nycteribiids (Diptera: Nycteribiidae) are specific haematophagous ectoparasites of bats, which spend nearly all their adult lives on hosts. However, females have to leave bats to deposit their larva on the walls of the roosts, where they later emerge as adult flies. Nycteribiids had thus to evolve efficient sensorial mechanisms to locate hosts from a distance. We studied the sensory cues involved in this process, experimentally testing the role of specific host odours, and general cues such as carbon dioxide, body heat, and vibrations. As models we used two nycteribiids (Penicillidia conspicua and Penicillidia dufourii) and their primary bat hosts (Miniopterus schreibersii and Myotis myotis, respectively). Carbon dioxide was the most effective cue activating and orientating the responses of nycteribiids, followed by body heat and body odours. They also responded to vibration, but did not orientate to its source. In addition, sensory cues combined (carbon dioxide and body heat) were more effective in orientating nycteribiids than either cue delivered alone. Results suggest that nycteribids have some capacity to distinguish specific hosts from a distance, probably through their specific body odours. However, the strong reliance of nycteribiids on cues combined indicates that they follow these to orientate to nearby multispecies bat clusters, where the chances of finding their primary hosts are high. The combination of sensory cues seems therefore an effective strategy used by nycteribiids to locate bat hosts at a distance.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that roads in arid central Australia modify roadside hydrology and nutrient patterns creating better habitat for mistletoes (Loranthaceae). In two areas of mulga woodland near Alice Springs where mulgas (Acacia aneura) are the principal mistletoe host, we compared mistletoe abundance, and host foliar water and nutrient content between roadside and interior (100 m from the road) sites. Mistletoes were significantly more abundant close to roadsides than at interior sites and mulgas had significantly higher foliar water contents at roadside compared to interior sites. Mulga foliar P and N levels were not, however, significantly different between roadside and interior sites. We conclude that roads exert a strong influence on the adjacent biota in arid central Australia primarily through facilitating water infiltration at roadside sites.  相似文献

Central to understanding the nature TSE agents (or prions) is how their genetic information is distinguished from the host. Are TSEs truly infectious diseases with host-independent genomes, or are they aberrations of a host component derived from the host genome? Recent experiments tested whether glycosylation of host PrP affects TSE strain characteristics. Wild-type mice were infected with 3 TSE strains passaged through transgenic mice with PrP devoid of glycans at 1 or both N-glycosylation sites. Strain-specific characteristics of 1 TSE strain changed but did not change for 2 others. Changes resulted from the selection of mutant TSE strains in a novel replicative environment. In general the properties of established TSEs support the genetic independence of TSE agents from the host, and specifically the primary structure of PrP does not directly encode TSE agent properties. However sporadic TSEs, challenge this independency. The prion hypothesis explains emerging TSEs relatively successfully but poorly accounts for the diversity and mutability of established TSE strains, or how many different infectious conformations are sustained thermodynamically. Research on early changes in RNA expression and events at the ribosome may inform the debate on TSE agent properties and their interaction with host cell machinery.  相似文献

In a recent communication by Stat and Gates (Biol Invasions 10: 579–583, 2008), discovery of a symbiotic combination involving the coral Acropora cytherea and the dinoflagellate endosymbiont, Symbiodinium A1 (Symbiodinium microadriaticum, Freudenthal sensu stricto) in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands was interpreted to be the result of a ‘recent’ introduction. While introductions of symbiotic dinoflagellates have occurred and are occurring, the authors’ conclusion was made without sufficient information about the geographic range and host specificity exhibited by A1. The only direct genetic analysis of symbionts from the putative host vector, a jellyfish in the genus Cassiopeia sp., from Kaneohe Bay on the Island of Oahu, found that it contained a different symbiont species, A3. Furthermore, Stat and Gates (Biol Invasions 10: 579–583, 2008) did not consider the importance of host-symbiont specificity in preventing the establishment of a foreign symbiont species. In comparison to A. cytherea, A. longicyathus on the southern most Great Barrier Reef also hosts Symbiodinium A1 and a closely related endemic, A1a. Instead of assuming that A. cytherea has an unnatural association, a practical explanation is that long-term ecological and evolutionary processes influenced by local environments underlie the unusual, but not unprecedented finding of a Pacific acroporid associating with Clade A Symbiodinium spp.  相似文献

More than a decade ago, it was postulated that components derived from trematode parasites block receptors on the defence cells of their snail intermediate hosts, thus preventing host-cell activation and parasite elimination. This phenomenon has still not been investigated extensively. However, recent work concerning the molecular regulation of the molluscan defence response provides a new framework for studies that focus on an extension of this original concept - subversion of host cell signalling by trematode parasites. The hypothesis is that, to facilitate survival and replication in their intermediate hosts, trematode parasites down regulate host defence responses by interfering with key signal-transduction pathways in snail defence cells.  相似文献

Canine and human zoonotic leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum, which is transmitted by the bite of infected phlebotomine sand flies, is a serious public health problem in the Mediterranean basin and Latin America. Among reports on newly identified mammalian hosts recurrently found infected with L. infantum, those regarding domestic cats deserve attention for the potential implications to public health. It has been shown that these animals cohabiting with humans can be infected (although only a few cases develop disease) and harbor parasites in an available way for transmission to competent vectors. In complex life cycles, larval helminths typically migrate from the gut to exploit the tissues of their intermediate hosts. Yet the definitive host's gut is overwhelmingly the most favoured site for adult helminths to release eggs. Vertebrate nematodes with one-host cycles commonly migrate to a site in the host away from the gut before returning to the gut for reproduction; those with complex cycles occupy sites exclusively in the intermediate host's tissues or body spaces, and may or may not show tissue migration before (typically) returning to the gut in the definitive host. We develop models to explain the patterns of exploitation of different host sites, and in particular why larval helminths avoid the intermediate host's gut, and adult helminths favour it. Our models include the survival costs of migration between sites, and maximise fitness (=expected lifetime number of eggs produced by a given helminth propagule) in seeking the optimal strategy (host gut versus host tissue exploitation) under different growth, mortality, transmission and reproductive rates in the gut and tissues (i.e. sites away from the gut). We consider the relative merits of the gut and tissues, and conclude that (i) growth rates are likely to be higher in the tissues, (ii) mortality rates possibly higher in the gut (despite the immunological inertness of the gut lumen), and (iii) that there are very high benefits to egg release in the gut. The models show that these growth and mortality relativities would account for the common life history pattern of avoidance of the intermediate host's gut because the tissues offer a higher growth rate/mortality rate ratio (discounted by the costs of migration), and make a number of testable predictions. Though nematode larvae in paratenic hosts usually migrate to the tissues, unlike larvae in intermediates, they sometimes remain in the gut, which is predicted since in paratenics mortality rate and migration costs alone determine the site to be exploited.  相似文献

Although multihost complex life cycles (CLCs) are common in several distantly related groups of parasites, their evolution remains poorly understood. In this article, we argue that under particular circumstances, adding a second host to a single-host life cycle is likely to enhance transmission (i.e., reaching the target host). For instance, in several situations, the propagules of a parasite exploiting a predator species will achieve a higher host-finding success by encysting in a prey of the target predator than by other dispersal modes. In such a case, selection should favor the transition from a single- to a two-host life cycle that includes the prey species as an intermediate host. We use an optimality model to explore this idea, and we discuss it in relation to dispersal strategies known among free-living species, especially animal dispersal. The model found that selection favored a complex life cycle only if intermediate hosts were more abundant than definitive hosts. The selective value of a complex life cycle increased with predation rates by definitive hosts on intermediate hosts. In exploring trade-offs between transmission strategies, we found that more costly trade-offs made it more difficult to evolve a CLC while less costly trade-offs between traits could favor a mixed strategy.  相似文献

Recently, Brooker and Brooker suggested an equilibrium in thelevel of host defense and parasite counter-defense despite thepassage of sufficient time for the evolution of host defensesthrough coevolution between brood parasites and their hosts.A long coevolutionary history of brood parasitism and nest predationhas favored an adjustment of the host's life-history patternto the point where total acceptance of a cuckoo egg is now anevolutionarily stable strategy. In a comparative study basedon host species as independent observations, some predictionswere tested for the European cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) and Horsfield'sbronze cuckoo (Chrysococcyx basalis). In this article I reanalyzethe predictions made by Brooker and Brooker using informationon the European cuckoo and its hosts in the British Isles whilecontrolling for common phylogenetic descent. Only 1 of the 12 predictionsof Brooker and Brooker was supported using the new analyses,and none of the life-history variables was related to rejectionbehavior of the hosts of the European cuckoo, implying weaksupport for the hypothesis. Therefore, we conclude that whenanalyzing life-history variables that have a phylogenetic component,the use of modern comparative analyses is essential.  相似文献

1. Parasites and infectious diseases have become a major concern in conservation biology, in part because they can trigger or accelerate species or population declines. Focusing on primates as a well-studied host clade, we tested whether the species richness and prevalence of parasites differed between threatened and non-threatened host species. 2. We collated data on 386 species of parasites (including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, helminths and arthropods) reported to infect wild populations of 36 threatened and 81 non-threatened primate species. Analyses controlled for uneven sampling effort and host phylogeny. 3. Results showed that total parasite species richness was lower among threatened primates, supporting the prediction that small, isolated host populations harbour fewer parasite species. This trend was consistent across three major parasite groups found in primates (helminths, protozoa and viruses). Counter to our predictions, patterns of parasite species richness were independent of parasite transmission mode and the degree of host specificity. 4. We also examined the prevalence of selected parasite genera among primate sister-taxa that differed in their ranked threat categories, but found no significant differences in prevalence between threatened and non-threatened hosts. 5. This study is the first to demonstrate differences in parasite richness relative to host threat status. Results indicate that human activities and host characteristics that increase the extinction risk of wild animal species may lead simultaneously to the loss of parasites. Lower average parasite richness in threatened host taxa also points to the need for a better understanding of the cascading effects of host biodiversity loss for affiliated parasite species.  相似文献

Persistence of an infectious agent in a population is an important issue in epidemiology. It is assumed that spatially fragmenting a population of hosts increases the probability of persistence of an infectious agent and that movement of hosts between the patches is vital for that. The influence of migration on persistence is however often studied in mean-field models, whereas in reality the actual distance travelled can be limited and influence the movement dynamics. We use a stochastic model, where within- and between-patch dynamics are coupled and movement is modelled explicitly, to show that explicit consideration of movement distance makes the relation between persistence of infectious agents and the metapopulation structure of its hosts less straightforward than previously thought. We show that the probability of persistence is largest at an intermediate movement distance of the host and that spatially fragmenting a population of hosts is not necessarily beneficial for persistence.  相似文献
