Cytogenetic data have provided important clues that the Astyanax fasciatus populations from the Upper Paraná River basin could be a part of a more diverse fish group, usually included on the same taxa. Samples collected in Cachoeira de Emas, SP, in Mogi-Guaçu River basin, show two major cytotypes presenting 2 n = 46 and 2 n = 48 chromosomes, with distinct karyotypic formula, despite the fact that the molecular data suggested some degree of gene flow between these cytotypes. Cytogenetic and morphometric analyses were performed in this species, aiming to contribute to the understanding of the natural history from such fish group. Two allopatric populations with distinct standard cytotypes were analysed, and the data obtained suggest the separation into two groups.  相似文献

Fish species of the Zungaro genus (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) are amongst the largest migratory fish in Latin America and have considerable economic importance for commercial fishing in Brazil. However, natural populations of this large catfish are experiencing a severe decline. There are significant taxonomical inconsistencies for this fish. Two geographically separated species of the fish were initially described, one endemic in the Amazon and another in the Paraná-Paraguay River basins. A taxonomic review had recently proposed that there is only one Zungaro species in Brazil, based on morphological data. We made a molecular study of Zungaro populations in an attempt to solve taxonomical inconsistencies and to analyze genetic diversity in natural populations of this genus. We analyzed two regions of the mitochondrial DNA (the control region and the ATPase 6 gene region) of individuals sampled from the Paraná-Paraguay River and Amazon River basins. Analyses based on p-distances and maximum likelihood phylogenetic models showed a genetic difference between populations corresponding to different species. Genetic differentiation between Zungaro populations was at the same level as that observed between other Siluriformes species, using the same DNA sequences. We conclude that Zungaro species of the Paraná-Paraguay River basin do not belong to the same species found in the Amazon basin. This finding has a significant implication for conservation of this fish, given that populations are disappearing at a high rate in the Paraná-Paraguay River basin, mainly due to impoundments.  相似文献

Invasive Cichla populations in the São João River basin were genetically analysed and compared with Cichla populations from other neotropical hydrographic basins. Polymorphic sequences within the mitochondrial DNA D-loop region confirmed the introduction of different populations to the regions under analysis. Cichla kelberi was introduced to the Juturnaíba reservoir and a downstream area of the São João River, with Cichla monoculus restricted to downstream river areas. Results from this study will be useful for monitoring invasive Cichla populations in the coastal basin since it elucidated the taxonomic units in the reservoir and an areas downstream.  相似文献

A genetic study was carried out on a neotropical fish species to illustrate the refuge theory, whose main principles are summarized. The geographical structure of the anostomid species Leporinus friderici was analysed in French Guiana and Brazil by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Fifteen enzymatic systems corresponding to 21 loci were studied, revealing the following particularities: (1) specimens of fish from six independent coastal rivers of French Guiana form two groups geographically situated on either side of the Kourou River; (2) two alleles can serve as geographic markers, Ldh2 ( l30 ) showing an affinity between the populations in eastern French Guiana and Brazil, and Me 1 ( 300 ) being specific to the west.
These observations are probably related to the refuges that were formed in the Quaternary in South America, especially on the Guiana Shield. We consider that the populations of French Guiana are separated into two groups at the boundary between the two migratory flows, one arising in the west from the refuge of the Guiana Shield and the other in the east from a nearby undetermined Amazonian refuge.  相似文献

Prochilodus lineatus is a highly migratory fish species that sustains the most important commercial fishery of Paraná-Paraguay basin. Migratory patterns are poorly known and only few population genetic studies are available for this species in the Upper Paraná. To assess genetic population structure, we genotyped a sample of 93 individuals from the Lower Uruguay River close to Gualeguaychú city (Entre Ríos, Argentina) at three different times, July 2008 (Winter), September 2008 (Spring) and May 2009 (Fall). All individuals were genotyped for 12 microsatellite loci previously found to be informative to assess populations of P. lineatus. Our results show seasonal variation of the genetic sub-structuring at this locality that may be related to the presence of different migratory stocks throughout the year. The Fall sample includes an additional genetic cluster of individuals not detected in Winter and Spring, suggesting that this species should be considered a mixed stock fishery.  相似文献

In this study the intraspecific variation of wild Labeo rohita was investigated on the basis of morphometric characters using the truss network system constructed from the fish body. Altogether 435 fish samples were collected from six drainages of the Ganga basin in India. Data were subjected to principal component analysis, discriminant function analysis and univariate analysis of variance. The first principal component (PC1) explained 47.88% of the total variation, while PC2 and PC3 explained 17.22 and 8.33%, respectively. The step‐wise discriminant function analysis retained three variables that significantly discriminated the populations. Using these variables, 62.3% of the original groups were classified into their correct samples and 53.1% of the cross‐validated groups omitting one procedure were classified into their correct samples. Misclassification was higher for samples from the River Gomti (28.6%). Of the total of 31 transformed truss measurements, 30 exhibited significant differences among populations. These findings indicate the presence of six different stocks of L. rohita in the Ganga basin.  相似文献

The genus Astyanax comprises small characin fish of the neotropical region. The so-called 'yellow-tailed characins' compose one of the most widely distributed Astyanax groups. A. altiparanae and A. aff. bimaculatus, are evolutionarily closely related and commonly found in several Brazilian hydrographic basins. In the present work, chromosomal data of specimens of A. altiparanae and A. aff. bimaculatus from 4 hydrographic basins in the states of S?o Paulo (Upper Tietê, Paranapanema, Ribeira de Iguape) and Rio de Janeiro (Guapimirim) are shown. All the populations showed 50 chromosomes, with different karyotypic formula. Although only a single Ag-NOR bearing chromosome pair was observed, all populations possess multiple cistrons of 18S rDNA. FISH with the 5S rDNA probe showed single signals at the interstitial position of one metacentric chromosome pair. C-bands are distributed in the terminal and interstitial regions of several chromosomes. However, the As-51 satDNA are frugally located in a few chromosomes of fishes from Upper Tietê, Paranapanema and Guapimirim Rivers, being absent in individuals of A. aff. bimaculatus from Ribeira de Iguape River basin. Beside these 4 populations, molecular phylogeography studies were also performed in individuals from Middle and Lower Tietê River basin and from 2 additional collection sites in the Paranapanema and Ribeira de Iguape River basins. The phylogeographic analysis using 2 mtDNA regions (totalizing 1.314 bp of ND2 and ATPase6/8 genes) of 8 populations of the group of 'yellow-tailed characins' from 3 major hydrographic basins showed structuring of populations, suggesting a correlation between chromosomal (nuclear) and molecular (mitochondrial) data.  相似文献

The genetic structure of eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) populations was examined in an analysis of variation of 14 microsatellite loci representing approximately 1900 fish from 9 sites between the Columbia River and Cook Inlet, Alaska. Significant genetic differentiation occurred among the putative populations. The mean FST for all loci was 0.0046, and there was a significant correlation between population genetic differentiation (FST) and geographic distance. Simulated mixed-stock samples comprising populations from different regions suggested that variation at microsatellite loci provided reasonably accurate estimates of stock composition for potential fishery samples. Marine sampling indicated that immature eulachons from different rivers, during the 2 to 3 years of prespawning life in offshore marine waters, do not mix thoroughly. For eulachons captured incidentally in offshore trawl fisheries, there was a clear geographic cline in relative abundance of eulachons from different geographic areas. The sample from northern British Columbia was dominated by northern and central coastal populations of British Columbia, the sample from central British Columbia was composed of eulachons from all regions, and the sample from southern British Columbia was dominated by Columbia River and Fraser River populations. These results have implications for the management of trawl fisheries and conservation of spawning populations in some rivers where abundance is at historically low levels.  相似文献

The pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887), is a commercially important serrasalmid fish endemic to the Paraná-Paraguay River basin, and one of the most widely cultivated native fish species in the Neotropics. As a migratory species, also inhabiting temporary pools subjected to hypoxic conditions, the species presents a high plasticity concerning respiratory adaptations. In order to supplement basic knowledge on the respiratory physiology and morphology of this species, some structural features of pacu gills, such as filament and lamellae structure, and circulatory pattern are described in this paper.  相似文献

  1. The role of interspecific interactions in structuring low‐diversity helminth communities is a controversial topic in parasite ecology research. Most parasitic communities of fish are species‐poor; thus, interspecific interactions are believed to be unimportant in structuring these communities.
  2. We explored the factors that might contribute to the richness and coexistence of helminth parasites of a poeciliid fish in a neotropical river.
  3. Repeatability of community structure was examined in parasitic communities among 11 populations of twospot livebearer Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus in the La Antigua River basin, Veracruz, Mexico. We examined the species saturation of parasitic communities and explored the patterns of species co‐occurrence. We also quantified the associations between parasitic species pairs and analyzed the correlations between helminth species abundance to look for repeated patterns among the study populations.
  4. Our results suggest that interspecific competition could occur in species‐poor communities, aggregation plays a role in determining local richness, and intraspecific aggregation allows the coexistence of species by reducing the overall intensity of interspecific competition.

Invasive and native populations of the Amazonian fishes 'peacock bass' Cichla monoculus and of a not yet described species 'blue tucunaré' here referred as Cichla sp. 'Azul' were analysed for genetic diversity using the hypervariable domain of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region plus steady diagnostic random amplified polymorphic DNA loci. There is no detailed historical record of the introduction of Cichla species into the Upper Paraná River basin, where they became invasive and a potential threat to local ichthyofauna. Genetic diversity among invasive populations confirmed the hypothesis of multiple introductions in this hydrographic basin. Moreover, a large and previously unknown population of natural fertile hybrids between C. cf. monoculus and Cichla sp. 'Azul' was identified in the Itaipu hydroelectric reservoir and in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River. Crossbred morphotypes were similar to C. cf. monoculus , but their morphological identification was not unequivocal. This hybrid population was characterized by high genetic diversity and it was composed of hybrids possessing concurrently nuclear DNA fragments specific for C. cf. monoculus as well as fragments specific for Cichla sp. 'Azul'. The nuclear DNA markers indicated that reproductive isolation between C. cf. monoculus and Cichla sp. 'Azul' has broken down in the new environment, and mtDNA sequences revealed that both species can be the female donor in the interspecific crosses. The data presented herein are potentially useful for future taxonomic, genetic and evolutionary studies in the complex Cichla group, for monitoring of invasive populations, and for further development of ecological guidelines.  相似文献

Identifying ecological factors associated with local differentiation of populations is important for understanding microevolutionary processes. Alpine environments offer a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of habitat-specific selective forces and gene flow limitations among populations at a microscale on local adaptation because the heterogeneous snowmelt patterns in alpine ecosystems provide steep environmental changes. We investigated the variation in morphological traits and enzyme loci between fellfield and snowbed populations of Potentilla matsumurae, a common alpine herb with a wide distribution along snowmelt gradients in northern Japan. We found significant differences in morphological traits between fellfield and snowbed habitats in a northern distribution region. These differences were maintained when plants were grown under uniform conditions in a greenhouse. Allozyme variations among 15 populations from geographically separated regions with different historical backgrounds showed that the populations are more genetically differentiated between the fellfield and snowbed habitats within a region than between populations occupying the same habitat type in different regions. These results suggest that variation in snowmelt regimes could be a driving force creating local adaptation and genetic differentiation of alpine plant populations.  相似文献

The genetic divergence among invasive and native populations of Plagioscion squamosissimus from four Neotropical hydrographic basins was assessed using the hypervariable domain of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. Plagioscion squamosissimus is native to the neighbouring hydrographic basins of the Parnaíba and Amazon Rivers, and the latter includes the Araguaia-Tocantins drainage, but it is invasive in other basins due to introductions. The mtDNA nucleotide polymorphism supported the hypothesis that the Amazon and Parnaíba populations constitute the same species and are separated into two independent evolutionary lineages. Absence of nucleotide polymorphism was observed within and among P. squamosissimus populations invasive to the uppper and middle Paraná River basins. Nucleotide divergence was null or low comparing the Paraná invasive populations with the populations native to the Parnaíba River basin, whereas it was significantly high compared to Tocantins populations. These results ascertain that P. squamosissimus populations invasive to the upper Paraná River basin and to the middle Paraná River basin downstream of the Itaipu dam are derived from the Parnaíba River basin. The genetic data presented are potentially useful to assist further studies on P. squamosissimus taxonomic and geographic distribution, development of ecological guidelines for managing populations invasive to the upper Paraná River basin and for preservation of native fish diversity.  相似文献

Palms are a monophyletic group with a dominantly tropical distribution; however, their fossil record in low latitudes is strikingly scarce. In this paper, we describe fossil leaves, inflorescences, and fruits of palms from the middle to late Paleocene Cerrejón Formation, outcropping in the Ranchería River Valley, northern Colombia. The fossils demonstrate the presence of at least five palm morphospecies in the basin ca. 60 Ma. We compare the morphology of the fossils with extant palms and conclude that they belong to at least three palm lineages: the pantropical Cocoseae of the subfamily Arecoideae, the monotypic genus Nypa, and either Calamoideae or Coryphoideae. The fossil fruits and inflorescences are among the oldest megafossil records of these groups and demonstrate that the divergence of the Cocoseae was more than 60 Ma, earlier than has previously been thought. These fossils are useful in tracing the range expansion or contraction of historical or current neotropical elements and also have profound implications for the understanding of the evolution of neotropical rainforests.  相似文献

Leporinus friderici, native to the Amazon Basin and popularly known as "piau-três-pintas", has great ecological and economic importance; it is widely fished and consumed throughout much of tropical South America. Knowledge of the genetic diversity of this native species is important to support management and conservation programs. We evaluated microsatellite loci amplification, using heterologous primers, in 31 individuals of L. friderici. These samples were collected from natural populations of the Araguaia River basin, in central Brazil, and the DNA was extracted from samples of muscle tissue. Eight loci were successfully analyzed. Six of them were polymorphic, and the number of alleles ranged from three to 10. Values of expected heterozygosities for these polymorphic loci ranged from 0.488 to 0.795. Exclusion probability (0.983), the identity probability (0.000073), and the mean genetic diversity values were high, showing that these microsatellite markers are suitable for assessing the genetic variability of L. friderici populations. There is a growing interest in studies that evaluate the genetic variability of natural populations for various purposes, such as conservation. Here, we showed that a viable alternative to the costly development of specific primers for fish populations is simply testing for heterologous amplification of microsatellite markers available from research on other species.

The traditional explanation of the distribution of the Mormoopidae is that this family originated in southern Central America or northern South America, later expanding its range north to Mexico and the West Indies, and differentiating into eight species. An alternative fossil-based hypothesis argues that the family originated in the northern Neotropics, reached the Caribbean early in its history, and dispersed to South America after the completion of the Isthmus of Panama. The present study analyses new and previously published sequence data from the mitochondrial 12S, tRNAval, 16S, and cytochrome b , and the nuclear Rag 2, to evaluate species boundaries and infer relationships among extant taxa. Fixed differences in cytochrome b often coincide with published morphological characters and show that the family contains at least 13 species. Two additional, morphologically indistinct, lineages are restricted to Suriname and French Guiana. Phylogeny-based inferences of ancestral area are equivocal on the geographical origin of mormoopids, in part because several internal nodes are not resolved with the available data. Divergences between Middle American and Antillean populations are greater than those between Mexico/Central America and South America. This suggests that mormoopids diversified in northern Neotropics before entering South America. A northern neotropical origin for mormoopids is congruent with both the Tertiary fossil record and recent phylogenetic hypotheses for the sister family to the Mormoopidae, the Phyllostomidae.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 101–118.  相似文献

Aim  To present a fish fauna survey from rivers draining the south-western region of the Serra da Mantiqueira, and to investigate the effectiveness of that mountain range as a biogeographical barrier isolating the fish faunas of the Paraíba do Sul basin and the upper Paraná river.
Location  Six drainages from the south-western portion of the Serra da Mantiqueira in the region of Campos do Jordão, Brazil, were studied. They included three drainages belonging to the Paraíba do Sul basin (Piracuama, Grande and Buenos), and three belonging to the Sapucaí basin, Rio Paraná system (Sapucaí-Mirim, upper Sapucaí and Santo Antônio).
Methods  The survey was conducted in two sampling trips supplemented by examination of specimens preserved in museum collections. Parsimony analysis of endemicity (PAE) was used to detect the hierarchy of relationships among the six drainages.
Results  A total of 47 species of fishes was recorded in the six drainages. The main watershed divide is an effective barrier between the two basins, with 28 species occurring exclusively in the Paraíba do Sul versant, and 15 occurring exclusively on the slope of the Sapucaí basin. The PAE of 18 species with cladistically informative distributions and unproblematic taxonomic diagnoses produced a single area cladogram, with complete congruence among 14 species.
Main conclusions  The main Mantiqueira watershed divide is an effective biogeographical barrier isolating the fish faunas of the Paraíba do Sul and the Sapucaí basin (upper Paraná system). Previous hypotheses of a past connection between the upper Paraná and the Paraíba do Sul are not supported by extant species distributions in the Serra da Mantiqueira region. Within-basin drainage differentiation, however, is relatively low.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA variation among 1246 individuals of Pacific lamprey ( Entosphenus tridentatus ) from 81 populations spanning 2600 km from the Skeena River, British Columbia, to the Ventura River, California, was surveyed using five restriction enzymes. A total of 29 composite haplotypes was detected in two gene fragments (ND2 and ND5). The three most common haplotypes, occurring in 91% of all samples, were present at similar frequencies in all regions. Samples were divided into six biogeographic regions based on sample distribution and geographical landmarks to assess geographic genetic structure. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that 99% of the genetic variation was explained by variability within drainages. The lack of geographical population structure is likely related to a life-history pattern that includes a prolonged larval freshwater stage, migration to oceanic feeding and return to fresh water to spawn. The lack of strong natal homing apparently promotes gene flow among drainages and regions.  相似文献
