The objectives of this study were to translate, validate and test the factor structure of a Cantonese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (Cantonese-PSQI) in support of its use among Cantonese-speaking Chinese in Hong Kong, southern China and Chinese immigrant communities in the West. The study involved Cantonese-speaking Chinese aged 45 or over in Hong Kong. A cross-sectional survey of 97 participants was firstly conducted to validate the Cantonese-PSQI. A second survey of 794 participants identified the best-fitted factor structure of the scale. Confirmatory factor analysis then functioned to develop and test a single-factor model, a two-factor model, and a three-factor model. The one-factor model turned out to be unacceptable due to its poor fit (L2 = 303.408, d.f. = 14, SRMR = 0.085; RMSEA = 0.161; CFI = 0.805). The three-factor model, despite its very good fit (L2 = 36.450, d.f. = 11, SRMR = 0.022; RMSEA = 0.054; CFI = 0.983), was unacceptable because of the extraordinarily high correlation (r = 0.928) between two of its three factors, namely the sleep quality factor and the daily disturbances factor. The two-factor model showed a good fit with the data of all the participants (L2 = 46.339, d.f. = 13, SRMR = 0.028; RMSEA = 0.057; CFI = 0.978), and with those of the middle-aged, the young-old and the old-old groups. The two-factor model of the Cantonese-PSQI characterized by sleep efficiency and sleep quality is therefore better than the original one-factor model and the three-factor model for measuring the sleep quality of middle-aged and older Cantonese-speaking Chinese.

The objective of this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in a non-clinical sample consisting of younger and older adults. There has been little research validating the PSQI with respect to multinight recording as with actigraphy, and more validation is needed in samples not specifically selected for clinical disturbance. Also, the degree to which the PSQI scores may reflect depressive symptoms versus actual sleep disturbance remains unclear. One-hundred and twelve volunteers (53 younger and 59 older) were screened for their ability to perform treadmill exercises; inclusion was not based on sleep disturbance or depression. Internal homogeneity was evaluated by correlating PSQI component scores with the global score. Global and component scores were correlated with a sleep diary, actigraphy, and centers for epidemiological studies - depression scale scores to investigate criterion validity. Results showed high internal homogeneity. PSQI global score correlated appreciably with sleep diary variables and the depression scale, but not with any actigraphic sleep variables. These results suggest that the PSQI has good internal homogeneity, but may be less reflective of actual sleep parameters than a negative cognitive viewpoint or pessimistic thinking. The sleep complaints measured may often be more indicative of general dissatisfaction than of any specifically sleep-related disturbance.  相似文献

The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a rigorously validated questionnaire with extensive use in sleep assessment. Findings from numerous factor analytic studies of the PSQI have been interpreted to support a heterogeneous factor structure model for the test. Nevertheless, the literature continues to lack a focused evaluation of whether this heterogeneous factor structure is justified. A consideration of this issue led to a conclusion that a closer analysis of the PSQI’s factor structure was merited. To address this need a comparative confirmatory factor analysis for assessing the performance of the accepted factors models of the PSQI was conducted. A sample of university students (n = 418), age = 20.92 ± 1.81 years, BMI = 23.30 ± 2.57 kg/m2 completed the multi-structured sleep survey at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India. Seventeen putative factor structures (three 1-Factor, eight 2-Factor, and six 3-Factor) of the PSQI from the existing literature were selected for analysis. Fourteen models (82.35%) had almost similar values for model fit indices. Two models were misfits, and one model was a poor fit. The two misfit models incorporated gender and age as covariates. The third poor fit model was used to produce a unique path diagram, which made it distinct from the remaining 16 models. The overlapping values in the fit range of the model fit indices did not support the often projected heterogeneous factor structures of the PSQI for the vast majority of the models.  相似文献

To assess the reliability and validity concerning the formal European Portuguese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI (EP)], its accuracy, and optimal cut-off point. N = 564 volunteers (18–80 years old) recruited in several settings (e.g., university campuses; work place; home; sleep consultations), agreed to complete the PSQI (EP). Subgroups completed additional measures: Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), STOP-Bang, Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale, or responded to a supplementary question about perceived sleep problems. As to internal consistency, Cronbach’s α = 0.75. Principal component analysis revealed a unidimensional structure. Six PSQI (EP) components and total scores were able to discriminate individuals who did versus did not describe having any sleep problem; all PSQI (EP) scores were significantly higher (denoting poorer quality) in participants suffering from a sleep disorder. Most Cohen’s d values showed large magnitude associations. PSQI (EP) and ISI scores were highly correlated, but no significant correlations were found considering STOP-Bang. ROC analysis confirmed an optimal cut-off point > 5 of the PSQI (EP) to detect self-reported poor/good sleepers in non-clinical settings. To discriminate non-clinical from clinical sleep patients, the optimal cutoff was > 7, and AUC = 0.94. The European Portuguese version of the PSQI performs as a reliable, valid, and accurate measure of overall sleep quality in Portuguese participants. Furthermore, results suggest that PSQI (EP) can discriminate poor sleepers in non-clinical settings, in addition to demonstrating high clinical accuracy in signaling potential sleep-disorder cases. In conclusion, the PSQI (EP) is a suitable tool to assess general sleep quality in Portuguese participants, both for clinical or non-clinical applications.

This study documents the validation study of the Multicultural Quality of Life Index, Chinese version (MQLI-Ch). This self-rated instrument is composed of ten items that correspond to multiple dimensions of the concept of quality of life. Each item is rated on a scale from 1 to 10, according to the subject’s culture-informed understanding of the concept. The MQLI-Ch was tested on 144 Chinese subjects (124 psychiatric patients and 20 professionals). It was found to be quite efficient (about 3 min to be completed) and easy to use. A Cronbach’s α of 0.94 demonstrated its internal consistency. The factor analysis of the ten items yielded one single factor, which accounted for 65.19% of the variance. The test–retest reliability correlation coefficient was 0.80. Its discriminant validity was documented by a highly significant difference (P < 0.001) between the mean scores of the two samples with presumed differences in quality of life. Thus, the MQLI-Ch showed high feasibility, internal structure, reliability and discriminant validity.  相似文献

The paper couples the results obtained by applying the expert and the rapid Macrophyte Quality Indices set up to assess the ecological status of the Italian transitional environments according to the requirements by the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/CE). The indices were validated by comparing the composition of the macrophyte assemblages and the values of some bio-physico-chemical parameters of the water column of 20 stations of the Venice lagoon sampled monthly for one year between 2003 and 2005. In 5 stations out of the 20, the ones which fall within the 5 classes of ecological status suggested by the Water Framework Directive, sedimentation rates, sediment grain-size, and nutrient and pollutant (metals, Polychloro-Dibenzo-Dioxins/Furans, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Pesticides and Polychlorinated Biphenils) concentrations in surface sediments were also determined. Results showed strong relationships between the trends of these environmental parameters and the composition and structure of macrophyte associations, as well as with the Macrophyte Quality Index assessment. Chlorophyceae showed a trend opposite to Rhodophyceae whose presence was concentrated in oxygenated and transparent environments. Chlorophyceae and the species characterised by low scores prevailed in turbid areas where nutrient and pollutant concentrations were high. Results allowed the identification of the conditions of the “reference sites” (confinement areas and sites with high water renewal) and the integration of the dichotomic key used for the application of the R-MaQI. Background

The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) are questionnaires used to assess sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness in clinical and population-based studies. The present study aimed to evaluate the construct validity and factor structure of the PSQI and ESS questionnaires among young adults in four countries (Chile, Ethiopia, Peru and Thailand).

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 8,481 undergraduate students. Students were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire that collected information about lifestyle, demographic, and sleep characteristics. In each country, the construct validity and factorial structures of PSQI and ESS questionnaires were tested through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA).

Results

The largest component-total correlation coefficient for sleep quality as assessed using PSQI was noted in Chile (r = 0.71) while the smallest component-total correlation coefficient was noted for sleep medication use in Peru (r = 0.28). The largest component-total correlation coefficient for excessive daytime sleepiness as assessed using ESS was found for item 1 (sitting/reading) in Chile (r = 0.65) while the lowest item-total correlation was observed for item 6 (sitting and talking to someone) in Thailand (r = 0.35). Using both EFA and CFA a two-factor model was found for PSQI questionnaire in Chile, Ethiopia and Thailand while a three-factor model was found for Peru. For the ESS questionnaire, we noted two factors for all four countries

Conclusion

Overall, we documented cross-cultural comparability of sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness measures using the PSQI and ESS questionnaires among Asian, South American and African young adults. Although both the PSQI and ESS were originally developed as single-factor questionnaires, the results of our EFA and CFA revealed the multi- dimensionality of the scales suggesting limited usefulness of the global PSQI and ESS scores to assess sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness.  相似文献

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to translate the original English version of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) into an Arabic version, and to test the validity and reliability of the translated instrument (GOHAI‐Ar) for use among the elderly in Saudi Arabia. Methods: The 12‐item GOHAI was translated into Arabic using the back‐translation technique and performing a preliminary test to determine the comprehensibility and readability of the Arabic language version. A total of 156 elderly patients answered the questionnaire, and underwent a clinical examination by one calibrated dentist. Information on subjects’ socio‐demographic background and oral health conditions was collected. Convergent validity was evaluated by identifying the associations between perceived oral health status, general health status, perceived need for dental care and GOHAI‐Ar scores. Discriminant validity was examined by comparing the GOHAI‐Ar scores and six oral health parameters. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach’s alpha. Test–retest reliability was assessed by intra‐class correlation coefficient (ICC) and weighted kappa. Factor structure of GOHAI‐Ar was evaluated using principal component factor analysis. Results: The mean GOHAI‐Ar was 32.1 (SD 12.2; range 11–59). Mean GOHAI‐Ar scores were higher for the elderly who rated their oral and general health as good. Subjects with perceived dental treatment needs had a lower mean GOHAI‐Ar score than those without any such needs. The caries experience, number of missing teeth, OHI‐S score, number of pathologically mobile teeth and number of oral lesions were negatively correlated with the GOHAI‐Ar score. The Cronbach’s alpha (0.93) indicated a high degree of internal consistency and homogeneity between items. The ICC for GOHAI‐Ar was 0.95, the weighted kappa coefficient for individual items varied between 0.42 and 0.71, and the correlation coefficients for the 12 items were above 0.70. Factor analysis didn’t support the expected dimensions of the index, and only one factor was found at eigenvalue greater than 1. Conclusions: The findings suggest an excellent reliability and validity of GOHAI‐Ar. Further research is needed to assess the value of this instrument in oral health‐related quality of life studies in Arabic elderly population.  相似文献

Arabic bread prepared from local Saudi flour contained a total of up to 10(4) organisms per g. Most of these were bacterial spores that survived the baking process (1.3 X 10(2) to 3.5 X 10(3] and a small number of yeasts and molds (10 to 40 cells per g). The organisms in Arabic bread appear to be harmless to healthy individuals. However, for immune system-compromised cancer patients and bone marrow transplant recipients, it is prudent to irradiate the bread to reduce microbial contamination. The decimal reduction doses (10% survival) for the most radiation-resistant organisms (spore formers) in bread were 0.11 to 0.15 Mrad. Accordingly, 0.6 Mrad was sufficient to reduce the number of spores in Arabic bread by a factor of 10,000, i.e., to less than 1/g. This treatment constitutes radiation pasteurization (radicidation), and to this extent, provides a margin of microbiological safety. Sensory evaluation by the nine-point hedonic scale showed no detectable loss of organoleptic quality of bread up to 0.6 Mrad, while irradiation to 2.5 Mrad induced unacceptable organoleptic changes.  相似文献

Objective

We aimed to measure prevalence of sleep disturbance in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) by calculating Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and compare these data with patients with benign thyroid nodules or normal participants.

Methods

Three groups of patients participated in this cross-sectional study. In the first group, 162 patients with DTC received total thyroidectomy, and then 131I therapy. The second group consisted of 84 patients with benign thyroid nodules, who received partial thyroidectomy. The third group was 78 normal healthy control cases. PSQI was used to assess the sleep quality. Inter-group differences were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test or independent samples T test. χ2 test was also used to check prevalence differences of poor sleep quality among the groups. Differences of PSQI score and poor sleep quality prevalence before and after 131I therapy in the same group of DTC participants were analyzed by paired T test and Mcnemar''s test.

Results

Higher PSQI score (7.59 ± 4.21) and higher rate of poor sleep quality (54.32%) were shown in DTC patients than in any other group. After 131I therapy, PSQI score and prevalence of poor sleep quality in DTC patients increased significantly to 8.78 ± 4.72 and 70.99%. Then DTC patients were divided into two subgroups based on their metastatic status. DTC patients with metastasis (87/162 cases, 53.70%) had significantly higher PSQI score (10.87 ± 5.18) and higher prevalence of poor sleep quality (79.31%).

Conclusion

DTC patients suffer from sleep disturbance, 131I therapy and awareness of metastatic status could worsen sleep problem. Psychological fear of cancer, nuclear medicine therapy and metastasis could be one major underlying reason. Longitude and interventional studies are necessary for further investigations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In humans, heart disease is associated with high caregiver burden and stress, which can negatively affect the health-related quality of life (hrQoL) of both patient and caregiver. The effect of a dog’s heart disease on owners’ hrQoL has not been reported. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop and validate a hrQoL questionnaire for owners of dogs with heart disease, with the hypothesis that heart disease would impact the hrQoL of owners. Owners of dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy were eligible for the study. A 7-item questionnaire was developed, with a possible range of scores from 0–35 (higher scores indicated worse owner hrQoL). The questionnaire was self-administered by owners and results were analyzed to determine validity, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency. The Functional EvaluaTion of Cardiac Health (FETCH) questionnaire was used to assess dogs’ hrQoL. Two hundred and seventeen owners of dogs with heart disease were enrolled. Median owner hrQoL score was 6 (range, 0–31) and median FETCH hrQoL score was 7 (range, 0–70). The owner hrQoL score was correlated with the FETCH score (r = 0.76, p < 0.001) and severity of dogs’ disease (r = 0.53, p < 0.001). Test-retest reliability was high (r = 0.83, p < 0.001). These results suggest that the owner hrQoL questionnaire has good reliability and validity, and that further testing of this questionnaire is warranted to optimize communication with owners regarding the care of dogs with heart disease.  相似文献

The rates of interaction of a number of serine proteinases with a mutant form of alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor (referred to as alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor (Pittsburgh)), in which a methionine-358 to arginine-358 mutation has occurred, have been determined. An approximately 6,000-fold increase in the second order association rate constant with human thrombin was observed (48 M-1 X s-1 for the normal protein to 3.1 X 10(5) M-1 X s-1 for the arginine mutant), confirming previously observed data using bovine thrombin (Owen, M.C., Brennan, S.O., Lewis, J.H. & Carrell, R.W. (1983) New England J. Med. 309, 694-698). However, substantial increases in the rates of association with other trypsin-like enzymes were also noted, indicating that the replacement of methionine by a basic residue affects all serine proteinases with this kind of specificity. There was a marked decrease in the rates of interaction of the Pittsburgh mutant with both human neutrophil elastase and porcine pancreatic elastase, the inhibitor being converted into lower molecular mass fragments after interaction with either enzyme. Butanedione caused a substantial loss in the inhibitory activity of the arginine mutant, while having no effect on the normal protein. These data, when compared to those previously reported for differences in reaction rates between normal and oxidized alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor (Beatty, K., Bieth, J. & Travis, J. (1980) J. Biol. Chem. 255, 3931-3934), are consistent with the interpretation that the amino acid in the P1-position at the reactive site of this protein has a marked effect on determining its primary specificity.  相似文献

In higher education, student ratings are often used to evaluate and improve the quality of courses and professors’ instructional skills. Unfortunately, student-rating questionnaires rarely generate specific feedback for professors to improve their instructional skills. The impact of student ratings on professors’ instructional skills has proven to be low. This study concerns the psychometric properties of the Instructional Skills Questionnaire (ISQ), a new theory-based student-rating-of-teaching questionnaire with specific questions concerning lecturing skills. The ISQ is administered after a single lecture. This way, it serves as a formative feedback instrument for university professors during courses to assist them to improve and (re-) evaluate their skills if necessary. The ISQ contains seven dimensions of professors’ instructional skills and three student (self perceived) learning outcomes. In this study, Dutch students in 75 courses rated three 90-minute lectures (T1, T2 and T3) of their respective professors using the ISQ. In total, 14,298 ISQ-forms were used to rate 225 lectures. The teacher level reliabilities of the seven dimensions were found to be good at each measurement occasion. In addition, confirmatory multilevel factor analysis confirmed a seven dimensional factor structure at the teacher level at each measurement occasion. Furthermore, specific teacher level factors significantly predicted students’ (self-assessed) learning outcomes. These results partly supported the proposed theoretical framework on the relationship between the ISQ teaching dimensions and the student learning process, and provided evidence for the construct validity of the instrument. In sum, the ISQ is found to be a reliable and valid instrument, which can be used by professors and faculty development centers to assess and improve university teaching.  相似文献

Sediment and indigenous microflora taken from water distribution systems has been shown to promote the survival of Legionella pneumophila. The effect of sediment and indigenous microflora on Tatlockia micdadei (Pittsburgh pneumonia agent, PPA) was evaluated by growth curve experiments. Symbiosis between PPA and environmental bacteria was demonstrated by satellitism experiments. Unlike L. pneumophila, the concentration of PPA remained stationary in test tube suspensions containing both microflora and sediment. The difference in the ecology between the two organisms may explain the infrequent environmental recovery of PPA and, ultimately, the epidemiologic differences between Legionnaires disease and Pittsburgh pneumonia.  相似文献

BackgroundNumerous supplements are used by sportspeople. They are not always appropriate for the individual or the sports activity and may do more harm than good. Vitamin and mineral supplements are unnecessary if the energy intake is sufficient to maintain body weight and derives from a diet with an adequate variety of foods. The study objectives were to evaluate the main nutrients used as supplements in sports and to propose a nutritional quality index (NQI) that enables sportspeople to optimize their use of supplements and detect and remedy possible nutritional deficits.ResultsA superior mean NQI score was obtained when the supplements taken by participants were not included (16. 28 (SD of 3.52)) than when they were included (15.47 (SD: 3.08)), attributable to an excessive intake of some nutrients through supplementation.ConclusionsThese results indicate that sportspeople with a varied and balanced diet do not need supplements, which appear to offer no performance benefits and may pose a health risk.  相似文献
