Hurricane risk characteristics are examined across the U. S. Gulf of Mexico coastline using a hexagonal tessellation. Using an extreme value model, parameters are collected representing the rate or λ (frequency), the scale or σ (range), and the shape or ξ (intensity) of the extreme wind distribution. These latent parameters and the 30-year return level are visualized across the grid. The greatest 30-year return levels are located toward the center of the Gulf of Mexico, and for inland locations, along the borders of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Using a geographically weighted regression model, the relationship of these parameters to sea surface temperature (SST) is found to assess sensitivity to change. It is shown that as SSTs increase near the coast, the frequency of hurricanes in these grids decrease significantly. This reinforces the importance of SST in areas of likely tropical cyclogenesis in determining the number of hurricanes near the coast, along with SSTs along the lifespan of the storm, rather than simply local SST. The range of hurricane wind speeds experienced near Florida is shown to increase with increasing SSTs (insignificant), suggesting that increased temperatures may allow hurricanes to maintain their strength as they pass over the Florida peninsula. The modifiable areal unit problem is assessed using multiple grid sizes. Moran’s I and the local statistic G are calculated to examine spatial autocorrelation in the parameters. This research opens up future questions regarding rapid intensification and decay close to the coast and the relationship to changing SSTs.  相似文献

Many factors influence the physiological stress response to fisheries capture in elasmobranchs. However, the influence of sea surface temperatures (SST) and behaviour are unknown and crucial considering global fishing pressures. We investigated the effect of SST and behaviour on the physiological stress response to capture of the gummy shark, Mustelus antarcticus, and compared our results to a laboratory study using similar conditions to test whether stress responses of in situ capture are consistent with those from laboratory simulations. Capture time for 23 M. antarcticus ranged 32–241 min as measured by hook timers or time depth recorders (TDR) in SSTs ranging 12–20°C. TDR data from 13 M. antarcticus were analysed to quantify capture behaviour as the percentage of time spent moving during capture. Several physiological variables measured from blood samples obtained immediately upon the animals’ landing indicated that although warmer SSTs increased metabolic rate, the stress response to capture was not exacerbated by capture duration. During capture movement occurred for an average of 10% of the time and since M. antarcticus can respire whilst stationary, restricted movement probably mitigated potential influences of increased SSTs and capture duration on the stress response. Previous laboratory findings were also shown to be indicative of in situ conditions and we thus advise that studies control for water temperature given the influence it has on variables (e.g. lactate) used to measure capture stress in elasmobranchs. We highlight the importance of seasonal water temperatures and capture behaviour when assessing the resilience to fisheries capture and the implementation of appropriate fisheries management strategies.  相似文献

Evidence of global climate change and rising sea surface temperatures (SSTs) is now well documented in the scientific literature. With corals already living close to their thermal maxima, increases in SSTs are of great concern for the survival of coral reefs. Cloud feedback processes may have the potential to constrain SSTs, serving to enforce an “ocean thermostat” and promoting the survival of coral reefs. In this study, it was hypothesized that cloud cover can affect summer SSTs in the tropics. Detailed direct and lagged relationships between cloud cover and SST across the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR) shelf were investigated using data from satellite imagery and in situ temperature and light loggers during two relatively hot summers (2005 and 2006) and two relatively cool summers (2007 and 2008). Across all study summers and shelf positions, SSTs exhibited distinct drops during periods of high cloud cover, and conversely, SST increases during periods of low cloud cover, with a three-day temporal lag between a change in cloud cover and a subsequent change in SST. Cloud cover alone was responsible for up to 32.1% of the variation in SSTs three days later. The relationship was strongest in both El Niño (2005) and La Niña (2008) study summers and at the inner-shelf position in those summers. SST effects on subsequent cloud cover were weaker and more variable among study summers, with rising SSTs explaining up to 21.6% of the increase in cloud cover three days later. This work quantifies the often observed cloud cooling effect on coral reefs. It highlights the importance of incorporating local-scale processes into bleaching forecasting models, and encourages the use of remote sensing imagery to value-add to coral bleaching field studies and to more accurately predict risks to coral reefs.  相似文献

Sea surface temperatures (SST) and chlorophyll a concentrations (Chl a) in the southern Red Sea have wide variations based on distance from the coast. To understand how these variations can affect the diversity of symbionts hosted by reef-associated organisms, we conducted a study in the central and southern Red Sea to examine the diversity of Symbiodiniaceae hosted by the zooxanthellate zoantharian Palythoa tuberculosa at different distances from the coast: offshore (FBO), midshelf (FBM) and inshore (FBI) of Farasan Banks, and inshore at Thuwal (TI). Genomic DNA was extracted from 198 specimens, followed by amplification of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) and noncoding region of the chloroplast plastid minicircle (psbAncr). Durusdinium and six lineages of Cladocopium (Pt-1-a, Pt-1-b, Pt-1-c, Pt-1-d, Pt-3-a, Pt-3-b) were identified based on sequences of the two marker regions. Changes in composition of Symbiodiniaceae lineages were observed from FBI (high SST, high Chl a) to FBO (low SST, low Chl a). Molecular variance analyses showed that distance from coast was the most likely predictor of differences in Cladocopium lineages. Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed a transition among different Cladocopium lineages as SST increased. One Cladocopium lineage, Pt-1-b, demonstrated higher prevalences at high SSTs and increased in prevalences at the same rate as thermotolerant Durusdinium. Additionally, Cladocopium lineage Pt-3-a had a high affinity to low Chl a concentrations. This study demonstrates that environmental variations in SSTs and Chl a concentrations are significant predictors for the diversity of dominant Symbiodiniaceae within individual host P. tuberculosa colonies. We theorize that flexibility with different lineages of Symbiodiniaceae allows generalist P. tuberculosa to live across a wide range of environments in the southern Red Sea.

Aim Our aim in this paper is to present the first broad‐scale quantification of species abundance for rocky intertidal communities along the Pacific coast of North America. Here we examine the community‐level marine biogeographical patterns in the context of formerly described biogeographical regions, and we evaluate the combined effects of geographical distance and environmental conditions on patterns of species similarity across this region. Location Pacific coast of North America. Methods Data on the percentage cover of benthic marine organisms were collected at 67 rocky intertidal sites from south‐eastern Alaska, USA, to central Baja California Sur, Mexico. Cluster analysis and non‐metric multidimensional scaling were used to evaluate the spatial patterns of species similarity among sites relative to those of previously defined biogeographical regions. Matrices of similarity in species composition among all sites were computed and analysed with respect to geographical distance and long‐term mean sea surface temperature (SST) as a measure of environmental conditions. Results We found a high degree of spatial structure in the similarity of intertidal communities along the coast. Cluster analysis identified 13 major community structure ‘groups’. Although breaks between clusters of sites generally occurred at major biogeographical boundaries, some of the larger biogeographical regions contained several clusters of sites that did not group according to spatial position or identifiable coastal features. Additionally, there were several outliers – sites that grouped alone or with sites outside their region – for which localized features may play an important role in driving community structure. Patterns of species similarity at the large scale were highly correlated with geographical distance among sites and with SST. Importantly, we found community similarity to be highly correlated with long‐term mean SST while controlling for the effects of geographical distance. Main conclusions These findings reveal a high degree of spatial structure in the similarity of rocky intertidal communities of the north‐east Pacific, and are generally consistent with those of previously described biogeographical regions, with some notable differences. Breaks in similarity among clusters are generally coincident with known biogeographical and oceanographic discontinuities. The strong correlations between species similarity and both geographical position and SST suggest that both geography and oceanographic conditions have a large influence on patterns of intertidal community structure along the Pacific coast of North America.  相似文献

In the Northwest Atlantic, overgrowth of the competitively dominant, native kelps by an invasive bryozoan Membranipora membranacea increases frond erosion, which has facilitated the establishment and spread of the invasive macroalga Codium fragile ssp fragile. To document the spread of both introduced species along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia from initial introduction points (the ‘epicentre’) southwest of Halifax, we conducted video-surveys of shallow rocky habitats along the southwestern shore of Nova Scotia (100 km linear distance, encompassing the range of M. membranacea) in 2000, and then along the entire Atlantic coast in 2007 (650 km). Membranipora membranacea was observed continuously throughout the surveyed ranges in 2000 and 2007, wherever kelps were present, suggesting natural dispersal via planktonic larvae. Codium fragile was observed along 95 km of the surveyed range in 2000 and along 445 km in 2007, with a relatively patchy distribution beyond the epicentre, suggesting a combination of natural and anthropogenic dispersal mechanisms. Rockweed-dominated (Fucus spp.) or mixed algal assemblages common outside the epicentre may alter the interaction between M. membranacea and C. fragile, since seaweeds other than kelp are not subject to defoliation by the bryozoan. Percent cover of kelp at the epicentre generally increased from 2000 to 2007, while that of C. fragile generally decreased. Codium fragile was the dominant canopy alga at 54% of sites in 2000 and at only 15% of sites in 2007. These findings indicate that, at near decadal timescales, C. fragile does not prevent re-colonization by native kelps.  相似文献

Current methods in DNA nano-architecture have successfully engineered a variety of 2D and 3D structures using principles of self-assembly. In this article, we describe detailed protocols on how to fabricate sophisticated 2D shapes through the self-assembly of uniquely addressable single-stranded DNA tiles which act as molecular pixels on a molecular canvas. Each single-stranded tile (SST) is a 42-nucleotide DNA strand composed of four concatenated modular domains which bind to four neighbors during self-assembly. The molecular canvas is a rectangle structure self-assembled from SSTs. A prescribed complex 2D shape is formed by selecting the constituent molecular pixels (SSTs) from a 310-pixel molecular canvas and then subjecting the corresponding strands to one-pot annealing. Due to the modular nature of the SST approach we demonstrate the scalability, versatility and robustness of this method. Compared with alternative methods, the SST method enables a wider selection of information polymers and sequences through the use of de novo designed and synthesized short DNA strands.  相似文献

The mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is invasive worldwide, has displaced indigenous species on the west coast of South Africa and now threatens Perna perna on the south coast. We tested the hypothesis that Mytilus will replace Perna by examining changes in their distribution on shores where they co-exist. Total cover, adult density, recruit density, recruit/adult correlations and mean maximum lengths of both species were measured in 2001 at two contrasting sites (Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma) 70 km apart, each including two locations 100 m apart. Cover and density were measured again in 2004. Total mussel abundance was significantly lower in Tsitsikamma, and recruit density was only 17% that of Plettenberg Bay. Abundance and cover increased upshore for Mytilus, but decreased for Perna, giving Mytilus higher adult and recruit density and total cover than Perna in the upper zones. Low shore densities of recruits and adults were similar between species but cover was lower for Mytilus, reflecting its smaller size, and presumably slower growth or higher mortality there. Thus, mechanisms excluding species differed among zones. Recruitment limitation delays invasion at Tsitsikamma and excludes Perna from the high shore, while Mytilus is excluded from the low shore by post-recruitment effects. Recruitment limitation also shapes population structure. Recruit/adult correlations were significant only where adult densities were low, and this effect was species-specific. Thus, at low densities, larvae settle or survive better near adult conspecifics. After 3 years, these patterns remained strongly evident, suggesting Mytilus will not eliminate Perna and that co-existence is possible through partial habitat segregation driven by recruitment limitation of Perna on the high shore and post-settlement effects on Mytilus on the low shore.  相似文献

From 3 July to 15 September 2000, plankton samples were collected roughly every 2 days at three stations within 1.5 km from shore at Sunset Bay, OR. In these samples we enumerated Coscinodiscus-like diatoms, Protoperidinium spp., and the potentially toxic phytoplankter, Pseudo-nitzschia spp. Using time series analysis, the abundance of these phytoplankters was compared to wind stress, tidal range, and sea surface temperature (SST). SST was significantly cross-correlated with wind stress (lower SST occurred during upwelling favorable winds) and maximum daily tidal range (cold and warm anomalies in SST occurred around the neap and spring tides, respectively). We found no significant cross-correlations between wind stress (upwelling vs. downwelling winds) and the abundance of any of the taxa. Significant cross-correlations were found between phytoplankton abundances and the maximum daily tidal range (peak concentrations occurred between the neap and spring tides) and SST (peak concentrations occurred during periods of warmer SST). We hypothesize that this pattern of abundance may be caused by shoreward transport of offshore phytoplankton populations by internal tidal waves.  相似文献

The distribution of the gametophytes of Asparagopsis armata in Ireland currently encompasses a 75 km radius from a seaweed farm that commercially cultivates this species. This is a smaller range than the historic distribution shows since its arrival in Ireland in 1939. Fragmentation of this alga to seed ropes at a commercial seaweed farm seems to maintain the populations of this introduced species. Without this commercial seaweed farm A. armata would probably not flourish on the Irish west coast and this farm appears to act as a source pool for the populations. The sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of Irish waters are suitable for growth, survival and asexual reproduction of the tetrasporophyte and gametophyte; however, they may not be warm enough for sexual reproduction. The effect of temperature on the life cycle and distribution are discussed. Three species, i.e., Ulva lactuca, Plocamium cartilagineum and Cryptopleura ramosa, were hosts for epiphytic A. armata in summer in over 60% of the collected samples.  相似文献

Relationships were analyzed between sea surface temperature (SST) and annual growth characteristics (density, extension rate and calcification rate) of the Caribbean reef-building coral Montastraea annularis. Colonies were collected from 12 localities in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Two well-separated relationships were found, one for the Gulf of Mexico and the other for the Caribbean Sea. Calcification rate and skeletal density increased with increasing SST in both regions, while extension rate tended to decrease. Calcification rate increased ∼0.57 g cm−2 year−1 for each 1 °C increase in SST. Zero calcification was projected to occur at 23.7 °C in corals from the Gulf of Mexico and at 25.5 °C in corals from the Caribbean Sea. The 24 °C annual average SST isotherm marks the northern limit of distribution of M. annularis. Montastraea annularis populations of the Gulf of Mexico are isolated from those of the Caribbean Sea, and results indicate that corals from the Gulf of Mexico are adapted to growth at lower minimum and average annual SST. Corals from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, growing at lower SSTs and having lower calcification rates, extend their skeletons the same or more than those growing at higher SSTs. They achieve this by putting more of their calcification resources into extension and less into thickening, i.e., by sacrificing density.  相似文献

Hydrographic variability in the Mixed Water Region of the Northwest Pacific Ocean at latitudes 35°–40°N, between the Kuroshio Extension and Oyashio Front, causes complex upwelling, leading to large primary productivity and thus great fishery resources. We reconstructed the periodicity of the variability in North Pacific Intermediate Water upwelling and surface ocean hydrography based on the high-resolution analysis of diatom assemblages in seven cores, representing the last 150,000 years. We derived annual sea surface temperatures (SSTs) through a diatom-based proxy (Td). The Td′-derived annual SSTs (°C) are controlled by orbital forcing, and show a reversed saw-tooth in southern cores, in contrast to a normal saw-tooth pattern in the northern cores. Oceanic diatom abundances along the northern margin of the Mixed Water Region are twice times as high as beneath the axis of the Kuroshio Extension, and fluctuated in a revised saw-tooth pattern with higher overall abundances interglacials. After the last deglaciation, annual SSTs declined markedly during Heinrich and Bond events in the northern North Atlantic, when ice-rafted detritus transported by icebergs was abundant. Wavelet analyses of the record of oceanic diatom abundances show significant variability at 2.0-kyr, 2 to 5.6-kyr and 3.2 to 9.6-kyr periods. Wavelet analyses of the annual SST records show significant periodicity at 1.4 to 2.6-kyr, 3.3 to 4.0-kyr, 7.2 to 12.8-kyr cycles.  相似文献

We describe the microscopic structure of the sperm storage tubules (SSTs) of the polygynandrous alpine accentor, Prunella collaris. The SSTs were found at the utero‐vaginal junction of the oviduct and were composed of a single layer of columnar epithelium. The cells of the tubule proper were non‐ciliated and had a round or oval nucleus in their basal portion. Their cytoplasm was finely or coarsely vacuolated due to lipid inclusions. Under the electron microscope, the epithelial cells exhibited a number of mitochondria, Golgi bodies, occasional lysosome‐like dense bodies, granular endoplasmic reticula, junctional complex, and tonofilaments. The apical margin of the cells was fringed with numerous microvilli. The epithelial lining of the SSTs was devoid of mucous cells, but showed occasional infiltration of lymphoid cells. No contractile elements were found in association with the SSTs, but a close apposition of unmyelinated nerve fibres to the basal part of the SST cells was recognized. Intraluminal sperm were arranged in bundles, and their heads were orientated towards the distal portion of the SSTs. Evidence for engulfment of sperm by the SST cells was obtained for the first time. A sign of atrophy or regression of the SSTs was found in one specimen.  相似文献

Sepiola atlantica were captured in seine nets at twelve locations around the coast of Anglesey, UK. Animals were most abundant on the very sheltered shore of Y Foryd Bay and the wave-exposed shore of Traeth Penrhos, and these two locations were further sampled seasonally to examine the seasonal occurrence, population structure and reproductive biology of S. atlantica. Sepiola atlantica (5?C28?mm dorsal mantle length (DML)) migrated inshore seasonally and first appeared in July where they attained peak abundances between July and August at seawater temperatures of 17°C. Numbers declined between September and October as temperatures fell below 15?C16°C, and in late October, they migrated offshore. Male S. atlantica was significantly smaller and matured at a smaller DML than females. The number of spermatangia on the bursa copulatrix of female S. atlantica varied seasonally attaining maximum numbers in October with a mean of 22 spermatangia on the bursa copulatrix of Y Foryd Bay females. At Y Foryd Bay and Traeth Penrhos, the number of spermatophores in male and potential fecundity in female S. atlantica ranged between 1 and 147 and 25 and 141, respectively. The spermatophoric complex and gonadosomatic index showed a high degree of variability in individuals of similar wet body weight with the female gonad constituting a far greater percentage of the total wet body weight than the male gonad. It is concluded that S. atlantica of all sizes and maturity stages congregate in the shallow waters around Anglesey between July and October when environmental conditions are favourable for enhanced growth and maturation and where the high numbers of animals enhance opportunities for mating.  相似文献

The Pliocene molluscan assemblage from the Mondego Basin (Portugal, Western Iberia) plays a particularly important role in the understanding of the palaeobiogeography of Neogene–Quaternary molluscs of the Atlantic Frontage of Europe and the western Mediterranean. The importance of these Portuguese molluscan deposits is stressed, as it is the only assemblage representative of the southern portion of the Pliocene French–Iberian biogeographical Province. The Pliocene marine fossiliferous deposits of the Mondego Basin (central-west Portugal) are dated using their nannofossil and molluscan assemblages, as well as Strontium dating. The results suggest a late Zanclean to early Piacenzian age. Chronologically they are equivalent to the Mediterranean Pliocene Molluscan Unit 1 (MPMU1). However, due to the more northern geographical location of the Mondego Basin assemblages, their molluscan content is closer to that of MPMU2 than to that of MPMU1 in the Mediterranean. The presence of a stock of thermophilic taxa in the Mondego assemblage, no longer existent in European waters, enabled us to suggest a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction for mid-Pliocene SSTs in the region. We put forward the hypothesis that the SSTs at the latitude of Mondego, during late Zanclean to early Piacenzian, would be characterized by a yearly SST pattern analogous to that of present-day Cape Blanc (West Africa). Consequently, whilst subtropical conditions existed in the Atlantic Zanclean to mid-Piacenzian at Mondego latitude in the Mediterranean fully tropical conditions prevailed at that time. The Mondego SST estimates correlate with those estimated for MPMU2 in the Mediterranean. The global palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of mid-Pliocene SSTs in the PRISM2 Project suggests, for western Iberia, at Mondego latitude, an August SST of about 23 °C, and a February temperature of about 17 to 18 °C. Our hypothesis suggests similar August SST differing in only half a degree Celsius (23.5 vs. 23 °C) and February SSTs slightly higher (19 vs. 17–18 °C).  相似文献

Examining the growth of trees in response to environmental factors is essential for evaluating the stability of forest ecosystems. In this study, using tree ring data obtained from 18 sites and climate diagnostic methods. we investigated relationships between the radial growth of Picea crassifolia in the mid-western Qilian Mountains and local climate/sea surface temperatures (SSTs) since 1851 C.E. The results revealed that the radial growth of P. crassifolia showed significant upward trends during three time periods (1884–1906, 1929–1946, and 1964–1983) and significant downward trends in a further three periods (1907–1928, 1947–1963, and 1984–1995). Variations in the growth of P. crassifolia showed a significant negative correlation with temperature in June and a positive correlation with precipitation from July in the previous year to June in the current year as a response to climate change. We also found that large-scale anomalies could influence the radial growth of P. crassifolia, which was reflected in results showing that extremely high radial growth is related to El Niño patterns in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific, whereas extremely low growth is related to anomalously warmer SSTs in the southern Indian Ocean. Notably, we found that the extremely low growth of P. crassifolia in response to SST was more stable than that of extremely high growth. Furthermore, on the basis of qualitative methodology, we established that years characterized by extremely high/low growth were largely/little influenced by the time window and threshold values that were selected when determining the positive/negative pointer years. Our results confirm the validity of using the relationships between extremely low growth and SSTs to predict forest dynamics.  相似文献

The growth in situ of populations of Gigartina stellata (Stackhouse) Batters has been recorded at three New Hampshire locations and correlated with seasonal and spatial variations of surface salinity, temperature, and nutrients. Annual growth began between February and May, depending upon the location and its hydrographic regime. Gigartina populations reached maximum biomass and size in August and September, and a general decrease in both occurred during the reproductive period from October to February. The period of fastest growth coincided with increasing summer temperatures, while maximum carpospore release occurred during the period of decreasing (coldest) temperatures. The largest plants and maximum biomass of Gigartina were found on the open coast (at a semi-exposed site) while smaller plants and reduced biomass were evident within the Great Bay Estuary System. Salinity is a dominant factor influencing both the local distribution and growth of the plant. Gigartina is primarily restricted to the littoral zone, and its maximum length and biomass occur between +0.45 and +1.0 m above M.L.W.  相似文献

To assess distributional shifts of species in response to recent warming, historical distribution records are the most requisite information. The surface seawater temperature (SST) of Kochi Prefecture, southwestern Japan on the western North Pacific, has significantly risen, being warmed by the Kuroshio Current. Past distributional records of subtidal canopy‐forming seaweeds (Laminariales and Fucales) exist at about 10‐year intervals from the 1970s, along with detailed SST datasets at several sites along Kochi's >700 km coastline. In order to provide a clear picture of distributional shifts of coastal marine organisms in response to warming SST, we observed the present distribution of seaweeds and analyzed the SST datasets to estimate spatiotemporal SST trends in this coastal region. We present a large increase of 0.3°C/decade in the annual mean SST of this area over the past 40 years. Furthermore, a comparison of the previous and present distributions clearly showed the contraction of temperate species' distributional ranges and expansion of tropical species' distributional ranges in the seaweeds. Although the main temperate kelp Ecklonia (Laminariales) had expanded their distribution during periods of cooler SST, they subsequently declined as the SST warmed. Notably, the warmest SST of the 1997–98 El Niño Southern Oscillation event was the most likely cause of a widespread destruction of the kelp populations; no recovery was found even in the present survey at the formerly habitable sites where warm SSTs have been maintained. Temperate Sargassum spp. (Fucales) that dominated widely in the 1970s also declined in accordance with recent warming SSTs. In contrast, the tropical species, S. ilicifolium, has gradually expanded its distribution to become the most conspicuously dominant among the present observations. Thermal gradients, mainly driven by the warming Kuroshio Current, are presented as an explanation for the successive changes in both temperate and tropical species' distributions.  相似文献

Patterns of abundance of epifaunal crustaceans were compared between two common brown algae in intertidal rock pools on a shore near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Amphipods were significantly more abundant on Sargassum globulariaefolium (which was most common low on the shore) than on Hormosira banksii (more common at mid-shore levels). Experiments tested the hypotheses that height on the shore and structural complexity of the algae were the main factors influencing patterns of abundance of amphipods. Reciprocal transplants using defaunated plants and similar experiments using artificial plants allowed simultaneous tests of these hypotheses. The abundance of a common intertidal amphipod, Sunampithoe graxon was significantly smaller on Sargassum transferred from low to mid-tidal level of the shore than on any other treatments, indicating that height on the shore affects numbers of this species. There were no Sunampithoe on Hormosira even when transplanted to low shore areas, indicating that other factors, apart from the height on the shore, are also important for this amphipod. Another common amphipod, Hyale maroubrae was generally found in greatest abundances on Hormosira transplanted from mid- to low shore and on Sargassum low on the shore, again indicating the importance of height on the shore. There was no difference in abundance of amphipods on ‘complex’ and ‘simple’ artificial plants indicating that structural complexity (as defined in this study) did not influence these amphipods.  相似文献
