There is considerable variation in health and reproductive behaviours within and across human populations. Drawing on principles from Life History Theory, psychosocial acceleration theory predicts that individuals developing in harsh environments decrease their level of somatic investment and accelerate their reproductive schedule. Although there is consistent empirical support for this general prediction, most studies have focused on a few isolated life history traits and few have investigated the way in which individuals apply life strategies across reproductive and somatic domains to produce coordinated behavioural responses to their environment. In our study, we thus investigate the impact of childhood environmental harshness on both reproductive strategies and somatic investment by applying structural equation modeling (SEM) to cross-sectional survey data obtained in a representative sample of the French population (n = 1015, age: 19–87 years old, both genders). This data allowed us to demonstrate that (i) inter-individual variation in somatic investment (e.g. effort in looking after health) and reproductive timing (e.g. age at first birth) can be captured by a latent fast-slow continuum, and (ii) faster strategies along this continuum are predicted by higher childhood harshness. Overall, our results support the existence of a fast-slow continuum and highlight the relevance of the life history approach for understanding variations in reproductive and health related behaviours.  相似文献

Two unrelated American negro males with extremely large teeth are described. The maximum reported values for Australian aboriginal mesiodistal crown diameter are exceeded in 8 out of 16 tooth groups. The majority of the negro dental measurements either exceed or lie between the mean values given in the literature for Australopithecus and Paranthropus. ObjectiveTo determine serum and urinary selenium (Se) levels in children with and without obesity, and to assess if Se influences the risk of obesity.Subjects and methodsHigh-resolution-continuum source-atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-AAS) was used to determine the content of Se in 80 children (age 6–17; 40 boys, 40 girls). Correlations between variables were tested with the use of Spearman's correlation coefficient. U Mann–Whitney test was applied to assess the difference of Se contents in samples. Measured metabolic risk factors (blood pressure, glucose level, triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and total cholesterol), age, gender, and BMI were correlated. Logistic regression models were fitted to identify predictors of obesity interacting with selenium content in serum and urine, separately.ResultsObese children, regardless of gender, had lower Se content. Se level in serum (p = 0.001, OR 0.74, 95%CI 0.62–0.88) and total cholesterol (p = 0.001, OR 1.19, 95%CI 1.08–1.31) were the independent factors significantly influencing the risk of obesity in children. Two separate models were observed for Se in urine: (i) Se level (p < 0. 0001, OR 0.70, 95%CI 0.58–0.84) and glucose level (p < 0.0001, OR 1.22, 95%CI 1.10–1.35), and (ii) Se level (p = 0.002, OR 0.60 95%CI 0.43–0.83) and total cholesterol level (p = 0.003, OR 1.16, 95%CI 1.05–1.28).ConclusionThe current study suggests a possible role of Se in obesity. Further research needs to be performed to check if obese children are an at-risk group for Se deficiency.  相似文献

Many studies have established dental age standards for different populations; however, very few studies have investigated whether dental development is stable over time on a population level. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze changes in dental maturity in Dutch children born between 1961 and 2004. We used 2,655 dental panoramic radiographs of 2‐ to 16‐year‐old Dutch children from studies performed in three major cities in the Netherlands. Based on a trend in children born between 1961 and 1994, we predicted that a child of a certain age and gender born in 1963 achieved the same dental maturity on average, 1.5 years later than a child of the same age born 40 years later. After adjusting for the birth year of a child in the analysis, the regression coefficient of the city variable was reduced by 56.6% and it remained statistically significant. The observed trend from 1961 to 1994 was extrapolated to 9‐ to 10‐year‐old children born in 2002–2004, and validation with the other samples of children with the same characteristics showed that 95.9%–96.8% of the children had dental maturity within the 95% of the predicted range. Dental maturity score was significantly and positively associated with the year of birth, gender, and age in Dutch children, indicating a trend in earlier dental development during the observation period, 1961–2004. These findings highlight the necessity of taking the year of birth into account when assessing dental development within a population with a wider time span. The development of articulation before surgical closure of the hard palate was compared in 75 preschool children with cleft lip and palate and 40 preschool children born without clefts. The children were aged 2 years to 5 years 11 months. The patients had significantly poorer articulation skills than the controls at each age level. Substitutions were the most frequent error, and they did not decrease with age in the patients. Fistula size and a history of speech therapy were significant factors in the articulation error scores only in 5-year-olds. No advantage in articulation proficiency was found for those who had worn a prosthesis to occlude the hard-palate defect.  相似文献

We studied 70 patients (48 women and 22 men) with either rheumatic disease (n = 25) or lung disease (n = 45) who had been treated with glucocorticoids for at least 6 months (mean cumulative dose, 24.2 +/- 27.1 g of prednisone; mean current dose, 11.0 +/- 8.6 mg/d, mean duration of therapy, 8.1 years. We measured bone mineral density (BMD) of the hip (femoral neck) and spine (L2-L4) using dual-photon absorptiometry and BMD of the distal one third radius using single-photon absorptiometry. Compared with age-matched controls, the study population had decreased BMD of the spine (87.0%), hip (87.2%), and radius (90.6%). Current dose, cumulative dose, and duration of therapy were not correlated with BMD in the spine or hip in the total study population. The most significant correlations with low bone mass at the hip and spine were short height and low weight. There was a high incidence of hypercalciuria (30%) as compared with an age- and sex-matched control group (6.4%). Glucocorticoids are known to decrease vertebral and radial bone density. We conclude that glucocorticoids also decrease hip bone density as measured at the femoral neck. The high incidence of hypercalciuria may have implications for therapy of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.  相似文献

We propose and study a simple and innovative non-parametric approach to estimate the age-of-onset distribution for a disease from a cross-sectional sample of the population that includes individuals with prevalent disease. First, we estimate the joint distribution of two event times, the age of disease onset and the survival time after disease onset. We accommodate that individuals had to be alive at the time of the study by conditioning on their survival until the age at sampling. We propose a computationally efficient expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm and derive the asymptotic properties of the resulting estimates. From these joint probabilities we then obtain non-parametric estimates of the age-at-onset distribution by marginalizing over the survival time after disease onset to death. The method accommodates categorical covariates and can be used to obtain unbiased estimates of the covariate distribution in the source population. We show in simulations that our method performs well in finite samples even under large amounts of truncation for prevalent cases. We apply the proposed method to data from female participants in the Washington Ashkenazi Study to estimate the age-at-onset distribution of breast cancer associated with carrying BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.  相似文献

A new design for estimating the distribution of time to pregnancy is proposed and investigated. The design is based on recording current durations in a cross-sectional sample of women, leading to statistical problems similar to estimating renewal time distributions from backward recurrence times. Non-parametric estimation is studied in some detail and a parametric approach is indicated. The results are illustrated on Monte Carlo simulations and on data from a recent European collaborative study. The role and applicability of this approach is discussed.  相似文献

Background

Migration from rural areas of India contributes to urbanisation and lifestyle change, and dietary changes may increase the risk of obesity and chronic diseases. We tested the hypothesis that rural-to-urban migrants have different macronutrient and food group intake to rural non-migrants, and that migrants have a diet more similar to urban non-migrants.

Methods and findings

The diets of migrants of rural origin, their rural dwelling sibs, and those of urban origin together with their urban dwelling sibs were assessed by an interviewer-administered semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. A total of 6,509 participants were included. Median energy intake in the rural, migrant and urban groups was 2731, 3078, and 3224 kcal respectively for men, and 2153, 2504, and 2644 kcal for women (p<0.001). A similar trend was seen for overall intake of fat, protein and carbohydrates (p<0.001), though differences in the proportion of energy from these nutrients were <2%. Migrant and urban participants reported up to 80% higher fruit and vegetable intake than rural participants (p<0.001), and up to 35% higher sugar intake (p<0.001). Meat and dairy intake were higher in migrant and urban participants than rural participants (p<0.001), but varied by region. Sibling-pair analyses confirmed these results. There was no evidence of associations with time in urban area.

Conclusions

Rural to urban migration appears to be associated with both positive (higher fruit and vegetables intake) and negative (higher energy and fat intake) dietary changes. These changes may be of relevance to cardiovascular health and warrant public health interventions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess biochemical characteristics of adrenarche in patients with myelomeningocele (MMC), we examined serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in prepubertal MMC patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 54 prepubertal patients with MMC and shunted hydrocephalus: 13 patients (2 m, 11 f; aged 4.6-10.1 years, mean 8.1 +/- 0.4) with isolated pubarche (Tanner stage PH 2-4, B1 or testes volume < or =3 ml) and 41 prepubertal MMC patients without pubarche (17 m, 24 f; aged 2.0-11.9 years; mean 6.8 +/- 2.5). DHEAS levels were measured directly by chemiluminescence immunoassay (Nichols, USA). Auxological data (supine length, body mass index (BMI), arm span) and bone age (BA) were recorded. RESULTS: (mean +/- SD): Basal DHEAS levels correlated with chronological age (CA) (r = 0.32, p < 0.05), BA (r = 0.65, p < 0.01; n = 23), BMI (r = 0.54, p < 0.01) and pubic hair stage (PH1 vs. PH2-4, r = 0.49, p < 0.01). 10/11 patients aged 2-4 years had DHEAS levels in the normal range, whereas 18/40 (45.0%) of the 5- to 9-year-old patients showed elevated levels (>+2 SDS). Ten patients with isolated pubarche (10/13; 2 m, 8 f; CA 8.3 +/- 1.5 years) and 9 patients without pubarche (9/41; 6 m, 3 f; CA 6.9 +/- 2.1 years) had elevated DHEAS levels (+6.34 and +4.05 SDS, respectively). The values correlated with BA/CA ratio (p < 0.05, n = 23). There was a trend to higher BMI SDS levels in patients with elevated DHEAS levels. CONCLUSION: Our data show an early and increased activation of adrenal androgen secretion in MMC patients.  相似文献

Facebook has become the most popular social networking site round the world. In seeking an explanation for this phenomenon, individual differences in circadian functioning seem to be an interesting issue. The main aim of this study was to examine the potential associations between morningness/eveningness and Facebook use (intrusion and intensity). The participants were 663 Facebook users. The Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire, Facebook Intensity Scale and the Composite Scale of Morningness were used. Our results indicate that chronotype is negatively related with Facebook usage. Eveningness people use Facebook intensively and their Facebook use is more intrusive. Moreover, eveningness in combination with young age predicted Facebook intensity.  相似文献

Solid phase amplification (SPA), a new method to amplify DNA, is characterized by the use of surface-bound primers. This limits the amplification to two-dimensional surfaces and therefore allows the easy parallelization of DNA amplification in a single system. SPA leads to the formation of small but dense DNA brushes, called DNA colonies. For a molecule to successfully duplicate itself, it needs to bend so that its free end can find a matching primer, located on the surface. We used Brownian dynamics simulations (with a united-atom model) to model the basic kinetics of an SPA experiment. The simulations mimic the temperature cycles and the molecule duplication process found in SPA. Our results indicate that the steric interaction between molecules leads to a decreased duplication probability for molecules in the center of a colony and to an outward leaning for the molecules on the perimeter. These effects result in slower amplification (compared to solution PCR) and indicate that steric interaction alone can explain the loss of the exponential growth (characteristic of solution PCR) of the number of molecules in an SPA experiment. Furthermore, the growth of the colony as a function of the number of thermal cycles is found to be similar to the one obtained with a simple Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献
