This study describes the natural turbidity regimes at two inshore turbid reefs on the central Great Barrier Reef where wind-driven waves are the main agent of sediment resuspension. Many corals on inshore turbid reefs have adapted to high and fluctuating turbidity, however, anthropogenic activities such as dredging are speculated to produce larger and more prolonged turbidity events that may exceed the environmental tolerance and adaptive capacity of corals on these reefs. Natural turbidity regimes must be described and understood to determine whether and when coral communities on inshore turbid reefs are at risk from anthropogenically elevated turbidity, but at present few baseline studies exist. Here, we present turbidity data from (a) Middle Reef, a semi-protected reef located between Magnetic Island and Townsville and (b) Paluma Shoals, a reef exposed to higher energy wind and waves located in Halifax Bay. Instruments were deployed on both reefs for 16 days to measure spatial and temporal variations in turbidity and its driving forces (waves, currents, tides). Locally driven wind waves were the key driver of turbidity, but the strength of the relationship was dependent on wave exposure. Turbidity regimes thus vary markedly over individual reefs and this is reflected in community assemblage distributions, with a high abundance of heterotrophic corals (e.g. Goniopora) in reef habitats subjected to large fluctuations in turbidity (>100 NTU). A turbidity model developed using local wind speed data explained up to 75 % and up to 46 % of the variance in turbidity at Paluma Shoals and Middle Reef, respectively. Although the model was based on a brief two-week observational period, it reliably predicted variations in 24-h averaged turbidity and identified periods when turbidity rose above ambient baseline levels, offering reef managers insights into turbidity responses to modified climate and coastal sediment delivery regimes. 相似文献

The abundance of pelagic invertebrate predators in relation to turbidity and depth gradients in Lake Hiidenvesi (southern
Finland) were studied. In the shallow (<5 m) and the most turbid (up to 75 NTU) part of the lake, the community of invertebrate
predators consisted of cyclopoid copepods (max biomass >500 μg dw l−1) and Leptodora kindtiii (Focke) (17 μg dw l−1), while in the less turbid (10–40 NTU) stratifying area Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen) dominated (max 146 μg dw l−1). In the temporarily stratifying and moderately turbid basin Chaoborus and small-bodied invertebrate predators co-existed. Mysis relicta (Lovén) occurred only in the stratifying area (max 15 μg dw l−1). The results suggested that both water depth and turbidity contributed to the community structure of Chaoborus flavicans. Depth great enough for stratification was of special importance and its effect was amplified by elevated turbidity, while
high turbidity alone could not maintain chaoborid populations. Mysis relicta also requires a hypolimnetic refuge but is more sensitive to low oxygen concentrations and may therefore be forced to the
epilimnion where it is vulnerable to fish predation. Cyclopoids as rapid swimmers can take advantage at elevated turbidity
levels and coexist in high biomass with fish even in shallow water. Leptodora kindtii can form high biomass despite planktivorous fish providing that turbidity exceeds 20 NTU. The results demonstrated that depth
and water turbidity can strongly regulate the abundance and species composition of invertebrate predators. These factors must
thus be taken into account when applying food web management, which aims to reduce phytoplankton biomass by depressing planktivorous
fish. 相似文献

Studies of temporal and spatial changes in phytoplankton biomass and turbidity provide essential information on coral reef ecosystem function and health. Fluctuation of phytoplankton biomass responds to several factors including nutrient inputs, both anthropogenic and natural, while turbidity is mostly affected by sediment resuspension or transport from terrestrial systems. These parameters can be used as sentinels of significant environmental factors "modifying" coral reef systems. A chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and turbidity (Turb) in situ logger was installed at 10 stations from June 4 to July 7, 2003 in La Parguera Natural Reserve (Southwestern Puerto Rico) to assess short-term temporal and geographic variation in patterns of phytoplankton biomass and turbidity at pre-selected sites as part of an interdisciplinary long-term study. Average station Ch1 a variation was 0.17-1.12 microg 1(-1) and 0.2-23.4 NTU for Turb. Results indicate that the western near-coastal stations had higher levels of Turb and Ch1 a. The easternmost mid shelf station, Romero reef, was similar to coastal stations probably due to nutrient and suspended sediment inputs from a source external to our study area to the east, Guánica Bay. Comparisons between different sampling days indicate significant differences between days for most stations suggesting that one-time discrete sampling may not be representative of average water column conditions and illustrate the dynamic nature of coral reef systems. Further work is warranted to assess seasonal changes that integrate short-term (daily) variability in both Turb and Ch1 a. 相似文献

Effects of elevated turbidity on shallow lake fish communities 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Synopsis We compared the fish communities of two shallow lakes in the lower Waikato River basin, North Island, New Zealand, to determine the effects of elevated suspended solids (SS) and collapse of submerged macrophytes. Lake Waahi was turbid (20–40 g m-3 SS) and devoid of submerged macrophytes whereas Lake Whangape was clearer (5 g m-3 SS) and dominated by submerged macrophytes. The lakes had similar fish species richness and had nine major species in common; representing eight families including Anguillidae, Retropinnidae, Galaxiidae, Eleotridae, Mugilidae, Ictaluridae, Poeciliidae, and Cyprinidae (two species). The only major fish that was absent from Lake Waahi was a lacustrine form of the common smelt, Retropinna retropinna, which disappeared after the lake became turbid in the late 1970s. CPUE, condition, and size of most species in Lake Waahi were similar to, or greater than, those in Lake Whangape. Lake Whangape clearly exceeded Lake Waahi only for CPUE of two species. Within Lake Whangape two species displayed significantly greater condition, and one species greater size, in a turbid arm of the lake than in the main basin. Apart from lacustrine Retropinna retropinna, the fish in these lakes appear well adapted to cope with, or to avoid, the direct toxic effects of suspended and settleable solids on sensitive early developmental stages. In Lake Waahi loss of cover and food provided by submerged macrophytes appears to have been compensated for by increased turbidity and an associated increase in the biomass of the mysid, Tenagomysis chiltoni (a major prey item). 相似文献

This study was carried out on the “Faro/Ancão” artificial reef (AR), located off Faro, deployed in May 2003. We aimed to characterise early macrobenthic community colonisation of two concrete AR groups located at different depths (16 m and 20 m depth) and to test the effect of reef structure on these communities. The non-colonial organisms were counted; barnacles and colonial species were quantified using biomass. Multivariate analyses indicated that early macrobenthic communities (6 months of immersion) were affected by depth, and that barnacles and colonial species were also affected by reef structure. Univariate analyses showed that the biomass of barnacles and colonial species was significantly different among reefs and layers of modules. Both AR groups were characterised by the species Balanus amphitrite, Gregariella subclavata, Musculus cf. subpictus, Paleanotus cf. bellis and Syllidia armata. Jassa marmorata and Bugula neritina were characteristic species at 16 m depth, particularly on the AR Upper layer of modules, whereas Anomia ephippium was particularly common at 20 m, especially on the Lower layer of modules. 相似文献

Small concrete artificial reef modules (hemisphere-shaped, approximately 1.3 m diameter, 1 m high) were placed at two sites, eight modules per site. The sites were in 7 m and 21 m of water, 1.6 km apart, off the coast of southeast Florida, USA. The reefs were censused monthly for fish over a 19-month period. Species, number of fish, and estimated total length of each individual were recorded by divers using SCUBA. After the monthly census, all fish were removed from the reefs with a piscicide. A total of 88 species were recorded in the study, with significantly greater diversity on the deep reefs (monthly mean of 7.6 versus 3.0 shallow, P < 0.001, anova ). There were also significantly more biomass (calculated from length), and more large fish (>5 cm) on the reefs at 21 m than at 7 m (P < 0.001). There were more small fish at the shallow site (P < 0.05). Although it is not clear what variable(s) associated with the two depths is responsible for the differences, these results highlight the potential differences in artificial reef and ambient environment interactions within a localized area. 相似文献

The efficacy of a strobe light and a combined strobe light/bubble curtain system was evaluated under turbid water conditions as a fish avoidance scheme. Three estuarine species commonly impinged at electric generating facilities along the Atlantic coast of the United States were tested: Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus), spot (Leiostomus xanthurus), and white perch (Morone americana). The strobe light/bubble curtain combination was the most effective system studied in all cases. An interesting phenomenon was that fish avoidance to strobe light systems increased with turbidity over the range tested (clear, 39–45 and 102–138 NTU). 相似文献

Fecundity and abundance of Acropora palifera and the abundance of other scleractinians were compared at two reefs in the Huon Gulf, Papua New Guinea. While temperature and salinity were similar at both reefs, turbidity and sedimentation were higher on one of the reefs. A negative correlation was found between fecundity of A. palifera and three factors: depth, turbidity and sedimentation rate. There was also a negative correlation between coral cover and water transparency and sedimentation. The results suggest that high rates of sedimentation and low transparency depress fecundity of A. palifera, and limit the depth distribution and reduce the abundance of this species and other scleractinians. Lower fecundity in February and March was correlated with higher water temperatures. It is suggested that coral reproduction can be used as a biological indicator of stress on coral reefs. 相似文献

We used two analyses to test the hypothesis that planktivore abundances contribute to the residual variations of Secchi depth
or chlorophyll-a plotted with respect to mean summer epilimnetic total phosphorus. The first analysis involved 15 lake years of data from
six lakes. The data set comprised mark-recapture assessments of piscivore and planktivore numbers and estimates of mean summer
chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus and Secchi depth. We found that residual chlorophyll-a variation was not significantly (p>0.05) correlated with planktivore densities, but that planktivore densities did contribute (p<0.02) to the residual variation of Secchi depth on mean total phosphorus. The second analysis included all of the data used
in the first plus an additional 13 lake years of data from the literature. These data showed that the percentage of the total
fish community comprising planktivores did not significantly (p>0.05) contribute to the residual variation in chlorophyll-a with respect to mean summer total phosphorus. Together, our results suggest that planktivore abundance has a significant
cascading impact on water clarity, but no long term statistically significant impact on mean summer chlorophyll-a concentration. 相似文献

Analysis of wind direction fluctuation-data indicates that turbulent diffusion in urban areas is significantly larger than in the country; urban diffusion occurs at a rate characteristic of less stable rural conditions. Differences between urban and rural dispersion are approximately equivalent to changes of one Pasquill stability class. Nighttime urban mixing depths are greater than the corresponding rural values because of the heat island effect. Empirical relationships and Summers' simple model of the heat island are used to derive an expression for the urban mixing depth in terms of city population and rural lapse rate. The expression was found to be in reasonably good agreement with lidar observations of mixing depth in St. Louis.

Anthropogenic activities lead to changes in characteristics of aquatic ecosystems, including alteration of turbidity and addition of invasive species. In this study, we tested how changes in turbidity and the recent invasion of an aquatic macrophyte, Egeria densa, may have changed the predation pressure by introduced largemouth bass on juvenile striped bass and delta smelt, two species that have seen a drastic decline in recent decades in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. In a series of mesocosm experiments, we showed that increases in vegetation density decreased the predation success of largemouth bass. When placed in an environment with both open water and vegetated areas, and given a choice to forage on prey associated with either of these habitats, largemouth bass preyed mainly on open water species as opposed to vegetation-associated species, such as juvenile largemouth bass, bluegill or red swamp crayfish. Finally, we showed that turbidity served as cover to open water species and increased the survival of delta smelt, an endemic species at risk. We also found that such open water prey tend not to seek refuge in the vegetation cover, even in the presence of an imminent predation threat. These results provide the beginning of a mechanistic framework to explain how decreases in turbidity and increases in vegetation cover correlate with a decline of open water species in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. 相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Life table experiments were carried out in a range of turbidities on D. pulex , representing a 'clear-water', and on D. barbata , representing a 'turbid-water' species.
2. In contrast to predictions based on seasonal occurrence patterns, D. pulex had a higher intrinsic rate of increase ( rc )s over most of the turbidity range than D. barbata. Consistent differences in life history between the two species were found, but life history characteristics were rather insensitive to turbidity levels. Although turbidity per se appears to have little direct effect on life history parameters, it could influence the seasonal succession of these two species by interacting with other factors.
3. It is suggested that visual predation by fish rather than turbidity per se probably influenced the seasonality of Daphnia species. During the warmer months, selective removal of D. pulex by visually foraging fishes may allow D. barbata to gain dominance. Effects of temperature and nutrition also merit further study. 相似文献

The Line Islands are calcium carbonate coral reef platforms located in iron-poor regions of the central Pacific. Natural terrestrial run-off of iron is non-existent and aerial deposition is extremely low. However, a number of ship groundings have occurred on these atolls. The reefs surrounding the shipwreck debris are characterized by high benthic cover of turf algae, macroalgae, cyanobacterial mats and corallimorphs, as well as particulate-laden, cloudy water. These sites also have very low coral and crustose coralline algal cover and are call black reefs because of the dark-colored benthic community and reduced clarity of the overlying water column. Here we use a combination of benthic surveys, chemistry, metagenomics and microcosms to investigate if and how shipwrecks initiate and maintain black reefs. Comparative surveys show that the live coral cover was reduced from 40 to 60% to <10% on black reefs on Millennium, Tabuaeran and Kingman. These three sites are relatively large (>0.75 km2). The phase shift occurs rapidly; the Kingman black reef formed within 3 years of the ship grounding. Iron concentrations in algae tissue from the Millennium black reef site were six times higher than in algae collected from reference sites. Metagenomic sequencing of the Millennium Atoll black reef-associated microbial community was enriched in iron-associated virulence genes and known pathogens. Microcosm experiments showed that corals were killed by black reef rubble through microbial activity. Together these results demonstrate that shipwrecks and their associated iron pose significant threats to coral reefs in iron-limited regions. 相似文献

Stereoscopic depth perception requires considerable neural computation, including the initial correspondence of the two retinal images, comparison across the local regions of the visual field and integration with other cues to depth. The most common cause for loss of stereoscopic vision is amblyopia, in which one eye has failed to form an adequate input to the visual cortex, usually due to strabismus (deviating eye) or anisometropia. However, the significant cortical processing required to produce the percept of depth means that, even when the retinal input is intact from both eyes, brain damage or dysfunction can interfere with stereoscopic vision. In this review, I examine the evidence for impairment of binocular vision and depth perception that can result from insults to the brain, including both discrete damage, temporal lobectomy and more systemic diseases such as posterior cortical atrophy. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Vision in our three-dimensional world’. 相似文献

Translocation experiments were used to test the effect of habitat on growth and shape of three contrasting phenotypes of Bembicium vittatum: dwarf, highly domed snails from an usually dry tidal pond; large, moderately domed snails from a sheltered, regularly inundated pond; and relatively flat snails from a vertical, exposed shore. Snails from both ponds grew nearly twice as fast in the wet pond as in the dry pond, indicating a high degree of plasticity of growth. Associated with these changes in growth rates was convergence of shape. Under conditions of rapid growth, the dwarf snails became relatively flatter, and hence more similar to the native snails at that site. These results indicate that the dwarf phenotype is largely a plastic stunting in response to conditions of little submersion time. The snails from the exposed shore also grew faster in the sheltered, wet pond than at their native site. However, they not only retained their flat shape, but actually became flatter (and hence divergent from the pond snails) when grown in the pond. Thus, variation in shell shape was due to interactions between source population and a common plastic association of flatter growth profile with more rapid growth. Previous experiments had demonstrated high heritability of the flat phenotype, while the present results show that the expression of the genetically different types is affected substantially by the conditions of growth, and that phenotypic differences among populations may either overestimate or underestimate the underlying genetic differences. This unpredictability of the relationship between variation in shell form and its underlying genetic basis complicates interpretations of geographical variation or palaeontological sequences based on shell form. 相似文献

Effects of coral transplantation and giant clam restocking on the structure of fish communities on degraded patch reefs 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Active restoration is being practiced to supplement conservation activities for the purpose of reversing the trend of reef degradation. In the last decade, the feasibility of different restoration approaches such as coral transplantation and restocking of other marine biota has been the focus of research and relatively few have examined experimentally its effects on the resultant communities. In this study, coral transplantation and giant clam restocking were applied on 25 degraded patch reefs (~ 25 m2) inside a marine sanctuary in Pangasinan, northwestern Philippines to examine their effects on the community structure of reef fishes. Five interventions or treatments were employed: 1) “coral” consisted of transplantation of a combination of Acropora spp. and Pocillopora spp. on concrete blocks; 2) “clam” consisted of restocking of Tridacna gigas; 3) “clam+coral” consisted of restocking of T. gigas with Acropora spp. transplanted on their shells; 4) “shell” consisted of deployment of T. gigas shells; and 5) “control” consisted of no intervention. Fish communities on the patch reefs were monitored monthly for 3 months before the intervention and were monitored further for 11 months after the intervention, including 1 recruitment season. After the intervention, the coral cover and the “other biota” category increased in the coral and clam+coral treatments, due to the transplanted corals and deployed giant clams. Consequently, the complexity of the substrate was enhanced. A month after the intervention, a rapid increase in the abundance and species richness of reef fishes on the coral, clam+coral and clam treatments was observed compared to the shell and control treatments. A change in species composition of reef fish assemblage was also apparent in the coral and clam+coral treatments relative to the clam, shell and control, especially 4 months after the intervention. The present experiment demonstrates the feasibility of improving the condition of degraded patch reefs, which can subsequently enhance the fish community. Results also show the importance of the underlying substratum and the abundance of live corals and clams to reef fishes. 相似文献
