Although measures to control bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) had been in force in the United Kingdom for many years and had resulted in a marked decline in clinical cases, the announcement by the Secretary of State for Health on March 20, 1996, that a new variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease may be linked with exposure to BSE, resulted in the introduction of several new control measures. These measures included a scheme banning human consumption of meat from cattle who were more than 30 months old (the so-called "over 30-month scheme;" OTMS), a subsidy for slaughter of calves, and additional inspections of abattoirs. The altered slaughter procedures and lack of rendering facilities meant an initial backlog of OTMS animals having to remain on farms. This placed pressures on accommodation and feed stocks, the latter being in short supply because of a poor grass growth the previous summer. Initially, the long delay before the removal of casualty animals from the farm resulted in increased summer mastitis problems for nonlactating cows. The export of calves to the European Union for veal production was banned, thereby allowing the cessation of a previously legal trade that was considered distasteful by many members of the general public. Financial concerns disturbed and continue to disturb affected farmers.  相似文献

The effects of sex, slaughter weight and carcass weight on carcass characteristics and meat quality traits were evaluated using 100 Segureña lambs. The management of all lambs was similar prior to slaughter at 19–25 kg. Slaughtered animals with a hot carcass weight below 20 kg were assigned to class B, and those greater than 22 kg to class C. Carcass weight had a significant influence on “non-carcass” components, dressing percentage, subjective carcass conformation, fat deposits, carcass fatness, bone and most carcass measurements. Sex had a significant effect on age at slaughter, “non-carcass” components, rib measurements, dressing percentage, fat deposits, and neck and shoulder percentage. As the weight increased, the carcass measurements also increased. Concurrently, while improving the conformation indices of the carcass, leg and dressing percentages, neither the commercial cuts of the animal nor tissue composition was significantly affected. Sex primarily affected the quantity of all types of fat deposits.  相似文献

European legislation states that after stunning regular checks should be performed to guarantee animals are unconscious between the end of the stunning process and death. When animals are killed without prior stunning these checks should be performed before the animal is released from restraint. The validity of certain indicators used to assess unconsciousness under different stunning and slaughter conditions is under debate. The aim of this study was to validate the absence of threat-, withdrawal-, corneal- and eyelid reflex as indicators to assess unconsciousness in calves subjected to different stunning and slaughter methods. Calves (201±22 kg) were randomly assigned to one of the following four treatments: (1) Captive bolt stunning followed by neck cut in an inverted position (n=25); (2) Non-stunned slaughter in an upright position (n=7); (3) Non-stunned slaughter in an inverted position (180° rotation) (n=25); (4) Non-stunned slaughter in an upright position followed by captive bolt stunning 40 s after the neck cut (n=25). Each calf was equipped with non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes before the slaughter procedure. All reflexes were verified once before the slaughter procedure. At the beginning of the procedure (T=0 s) calves were stunned (treatment 1) or neck cut in an upright position (treatment 2, 4) or inverted position (treatment 3). Calves of treatment 4 were captive bolt stunned 34±8 s after the neck cut. Reflexes were assessed every 20 s from T=15 s for all treatments until all reflex tests resulted in a negative response three times in a row and a flat line EEG was observed. In addition, reflexes were assessed 5 s after captive bolt stunning in calves of treatments 1 and 4. Visual assessment of changes in the amplitude and frequency of EEG traces was used to determine loss of consciousness. Timing of loss of consciousness was related to timing of loss of reflexes. After captive bolt stunning, absence of threat-, withdrawal-, corneal- and eyelid reflex indicated unconsciousness as determined by EEG recordings. After non-stunned slaughter, both threat- and withdrawal reflex were on average lost before calves were unconscious based on EEG recordings. The eyelid- and corneal reflex were on average lost after calves had lost consciousness based on EEG recordings and appeared to be distinctly conservative indicators of unconsciousness in non-stunned slaughtered calves since they were observed until 76±50 and 85±45 s (mean±SD), respectively, after EEG-based loss of consciousness.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of immunization against gonadotropin-releasing factor (GnRF) with Bopriva(?) (Pfizer Animal Health, Parkville, Australia) in prepubertal bull calves. For the study, 6 calves were vaccinated at the age of 3 and 6 weeks with 1 mL Bopriva(?), and 6 animals served as matched controls. Concentrations of GnRF antibodies, testosterone and LH were determined in serum samples out to 30 weeks after the first immunization. Body weight and scrotal circumference were measured for 59 weeks. At slaughter, 65 weeks after the first immunization, the quality of epididymal sperm was evaluated. The results showed that vaccination against GnRF influenced (P<0.05) anti-GnRF titer, LH and testosterone concentrations as well as scrotal circumference. Antibody titers significantly (P<0.05) increased after the booster vaccination and reached peak values 2 weeks later. Compared to control animals, inhibition (P<0.05) of the prepubertal LH secretion was observed in vaccinated calves at weeks 10 and 12-14 after the first vaccination. In vaccinated calves testosterone concentrations decreased after the booster injection to values below 0.5 ng/mL serum and remained for at least 22 weeks at this low level. Animals vaccinated with Bopriva(?) showed a delay in testes growth and smaller scrotal circumference. Puberty occurred at the age between 46 and 55 weeks in vaccinated and between 38 and 52 weeks in control animals and body weight gain was similar in both groups. All vaccinated bulls attained spermatogenic capacity at slaughter when they were 68 weeks old.  相似文献

The milk intake and sucking behaviour of Dutch and Holstein-Friesian crossbred calves fed milk replacer ad libitum by either the bucket method (n=8) or an artificial teat (n=6) were compared. The animals were observed for 3 weeks from the age of 2 weeks, penned individually and all provided with a “dummy” (artificial) teat near the milk source within the pen.

The teat-fed calves ingested significantly more milk than the bucket-fed calves (11.9 vs. 8.0 kg/day; P<0.05), and this intake took much longer (44.2 vs. 17.7 min/day; P<0.05). In both treatment groups, milk intake was organized in “meals”. The meal criterion, separating the withinmeal and between-meal non-feeding intervals, was set at 5 min. Frequency of meals and daily total meal duration did not differ significantly. Meals occurred rather randomly throughout a 24-h period.

On average, the dummy teat was used for 13 min per day by bucket-fed calves, but for only 1 min by teat-fed calves (P<0.05). Sucking of the dummy teat was largely clustered within the meal periods.

It is concluded that in the young calf a need for sucking exists independently of milk satiation. However, the level of satiation depends on whether the calf drinks or sucks the milk. Nutritive sucking is clearly more reinforcing than non-nutritive sucking.  相似文献

The design of modem housing systems for farm animals calls for cooperation between scientists within different disciplines. This article describes the design of a new production system for weaned and growing pigs, as well as the analyses and working processes behind its development. The aim of the study was to develop an economically competitive system that also provided better welfare for the animals and a healthier environment for the workers. Analyses were carried out with emphasis on behavioral needs and building design and economy. The resulting system, the “safari system, ”consists of a number of straw flow pens of increasing size. Pigs are moved to larger and larger pens each week until slaughter. The main advantage is that pigs are not mixed during the growth period and that they are given more space, especially toward the end of the growth period when their space demand is high. Furthermore, the provision of straw for comfort and exploration and of wallow basins for cooling in the pens for the larger pigs were considered significant welfare improvements. An analysis revealed that the safari system would be economically competitive in comparison to traditional intensive systems.  相似文献

Four Holstein heifers were superovulated and inseminated with infectious semen from a bull experimentally infected with type 17 bluetongue virus (BTV). A total of 20 embryos were collected at donor slaughter and transferred to 16 recipients. Ten recipients became pregnant of which one subsequently aborted, one gave birth to twins which died at birth, one was killed at term because of dystocia, and 7 gave birth to live calves one of which died perinatally. All animals were tested for BTV antibodies at the time of slaughter which was at least 30 days post partum for surviving heifers and calves. Two of the four donor heifers were retrospectively determined to have been infected by the semen (viremia demonstrated) and their embryos accounted for 9 of the 10 pregnancies including the six surviving calves. None of the recipients or calves developed BTV antibody by the termination of the experiment. This study suggests that BTV-free calves can be readily obtained from the use of BTV-positive semen.  相似文献

Aimed at improving animal fertility and health, diets for farm and laboratory animals have over the last few years been supplemented with increasing amounts of the antioxidant vitamin E. We now demonstrate by intravital microscopy that feeding hamsters with a vitamin E-supplemented “standard” rodent diet (60 ppm vitamin E) significantly reduces the microvascular manifestations of ischemia/reperfusion injury when compared to animals fed a nonsupplemented diet. Postischemic leukocyte adhesion to venular endothelium was reduced from 770 ± 204 cells/mm2 at 24 h after reperfusion in control animals on the nonsupplemented diet to 403 ± 105 cells/mm2 in animals on the “standard” rodent diet (means ± SD, N = 7 animals per group, p < 0.01). Animals on the nonsupplemented diet showed a dramatic loss of capillary perfusion density until 7 days after reperfusion (to 21 ± 13% of preischemic baseline values), whereas this loss was significantly attenuated (to 71 ± 12% of preischemic values, p < 0.01) in animals on the “standard” rodent diet. No difference in the extent of reperfusion injury was seen between animals on the “standard” rodent diet and animals on diets with substantially higher vitamin E supplements (300 ppm–30.000 ppm). Besides underscoring the benefit of vitamin E in reducing the extent of ischemia/reperfusion injury, this study raises the concern that vitamin E supplements in “standard” laboratory animal diets may have a far-reaching impact on biomedical research by jeopardizing established animal models of disease.  相似文献

Dogwhelks, Nucella lapillus eat both barnacles and mussels, Mytilus edulis. However, mussels are dangerous prey because they can snare and immobilize dogwhelks with their byssi. Despite this danger, adult dogwhelks are common inside mussel hummocks or stacks found on mature mussel beds. The whelks live in debris-filled chambers within the hummocks, unsnared by byssi. Evidence is presented to show that this is a highly favourable microhabitat for dogwhelks. Condition index (CI) measurements showed that mean CI for “hummock” dogwhelks was 20.99 in early spring, 29.65 in midsummer and 34.86 in early winter. In comparison, CI values for dogwhelks from nearby barnacle zones were 20.13, 25.03 and 24.66 respectively. The summer and winter CI values of “hummock” dogwhelks were enhanced to a highly significant extent. Data are also presented to show that shore elevation or dogwhelk shell height (over the size range of animals studied) had no confounding effect on this result. Predicted flesh and shell mass values for a standard 25 mm high whelk showed that occupation of hummocks was associated with a thin-walled shell morphology, and that the shell mass became proportionately lower in summer and early winter. A feeding experiment showed that CI rises slowly, even in dogwhelks fed to satiation on mussels. Dogwhelks were taken from the barnacle zone in March 1997 and either fed to satiation on Mytilus or starved, whilst being held in seawater at ambient seawater temperature. The CI of fed dogwhelks rose from 19.7 to 27.4 in 3 months, while that of starved Nucella fell from 19.7 to 16.3. In the meantime, the CI of dogwhelks in situ in the barnacle zone had risen from 19.7 to 23.8. Hence, 3 months' satiation ration had led to a nett 3.6 unit rise in CI; starvation to a nett 7.5 unit fall. All of the changes in CI were due to changes in flesh mass; shell mass was stable. Since “hummock” dogwhelks collected in early winter have a CI value about 10.2 units greater than barnacle zone dogwhelks, this indicates that “hummock” dogwhelks are long-term inhabitants of this microhabitat.  相似文献

Faecal carriage of Clostridium difficile in healthy animals has been reported recently, especially in piglets and calves. However there is limited data about carriage in animals just prior to slaughter in Europe. The main objective of this study was to determine the presence of C. difficile in pigs and cattle at the slaughterhouse. C. difficile was isolated in 6.9% of the cattle at the slaughterhouse. None of the pig slaughter samples were positive for C. difficile after an enrichment time of 72 h. For complementary data, a short study was conducted in piglets and calves at farms. C. difficile was more prevalent in piglets (78.3%) than in calves (22.2%) on the farms. Regarding the piglet samples, 27.8% of the positive samples were detected without enrichment of stools. The PCR ribotype 078 was predominant in farm animals. Samples isolated from slaughter cattle presented the widest range in PCR-ribotype variety, and the most prevalent PCR ribotype was 118a UCL. The results of this study confirm that C. difficile is present in slaughter animals in Belgium with a large percentage of toxigenic strains also commonly found in humans.  相似文献

The bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic in cattle has had a huge economic impact on the agricultural industries across Europe. Furthermore, scientific evidence now strongly supporting a link between a new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and consumption of BSE-infected animals has further heightened the need both to understand the transmission of these new diseases and to improve control measures to protect public health. In this paper we review work undertaken by our group using epidemiological models to understand the transmission dynamics of BSE and vCJD. We present new estimates of the future number of cases of BSE and the number of infected animals slaughtered for consumption for Great Britain, and summarise similar analyses undertaken for Northern Ireland, Ireland, Portugal and France. We also consider the epidemiological determinants of the future course of the vCJD epidemic, including the age and genetic characteristics of the confirmed cases, and present predictions of future case numbers.  相似文献

A key issue in animal welfare is whether keeping animals in conditions where they cannot or do not perform behaviour typical of more naturally-kept members of their species causes them to suffer. Various measures have been used to resolve this issue. The cost an animal is prepared to pay for the opportunity to perform different behaviour can be used as a measure of the importance of that behaviour to the animal. Manipulation of time-budgets is the most reliable method of measuring such costs and of relating “deprivation” to “suffering”.  相似文献

Results of Breeding Soundness Evaluations (BSE) used to select Santa Gertrudis bulls over a 10-yr period were analyzed in retrospect to determine the effect on bulls in subsequent generations. Bulls were tested at three ages: 16 mo (n = 1,936), 20 mo (n = 3,111) and at maturity (≥ 24 mo, n = 3,814). Scrotal circumference (SC) and sperm motility and morphology were evaluated. Sixteen-mo-old bulls were required to have an SC ≥ 30 cm to be tested. During 1977 to 1980, 20-mo-old bulls with an SC < 30 cm were culled, and the minimum SC was increased to 32 cm during 1981 to 1986. Mature bulls during this period were required to have an SC ≥ 35 cm to be tested. A BSE < 60 was considered a failing score, and bulls were culled at this level. There was a positive correlation between SC and sperm motility and SC and sperm morphology in 16-mo-old and 20-mo-old but not in mature bulls (P < 0.0001). The percentage of bulls passing the BSE was positively correlated with SC at all ages (P < 0.0001), and the passing rate increased over the years (P < 0.0001). Scrotal circumference increased over the years in bulls that passed the BSE (P < 0.0001). This increase with years was not as apparent in the semen quality traits measured. By using the BSE and a minimum SC to select prospective herd sires, the proportion of bulls passing the BSE is expected to increase in subsequent generations. Santa Gertrudis bulls can be reliably selected for use as herd sires at 16 mo of age.  相似文献

The seasonal population trends of cattle nematodes in tracer calves are described from 1981 to 1987. Successive worm-free calves were grazed with growing beef cattle for 20–30 days at 6 week intervals and then slaughtered for nematode counts 2 weeks after their removal from pasture. Ostertagia, Cooperia, Trichostrongylus and Haemonchus were the main genera recovered. O.ostertagi was the most often found and acquisition of inhibition-prone larvae began in late winter and reached a peak in spring, while maximum larval availability was in autumn. The seasonal inhibition and larval availability pattern for T. axei was similar to that of Ostertagia. Cooperia showed greatest inhibition during winter with maximum larval availability in autumn and spring. Haemonchus was more prevalent during summer to early autumn and no inhibition was observed. It was concluded that infective larval availability for tracer calves was highest during autumn, and most reduced in summer. A survey of 96 primatological articles revealed that cage location of research monkeys is rarely mentioned, although the environment of upper and lower row-housed animals markedly differs in terms of light quality, light intensity, and living dimension. Not accounting for these uncontrolled variables may increase variability of data and, consequently, the number of experimental animals needed to obtain statistically acceptable results. This study concluded that single-tier housing would be an important refinement of research methodology. Such housing would (a) enable all animals of a room to use the “arboreal ”dimension of their enclosure and retreat to “safe ”vantage points above the human “predator, ”(b) offer all animals access to uniform light, and (c) provide more favorable conditions for professional animal care.  相似文献

The applicability of serological tests in the diagnosis of intrauterine infections in Danish cattle was investigated. Fetuses from slaughter animals, experimentally infected and spontaneously aborted fetuses, premature and stillborn calves, were subjected to necropsy and histological studies, and to microbiological and serological examinations. The latter comprised rocket immunoelectrophoresis and radial immunodiffusion. In sera of the fetuses from slaughter animals, immunoglobulins were either not detectable or only present in very small quantities, whereas sera of fetuses and calves with pathological changes and/or verified infection contained considerable amounts of IgM and IgG. IgA was also detected in the latter group. The results corroborate the diagnostic importance of immunoglobulin determination in aborted fetuses and stillborn calves.  相似文献

Between December and June, six paddocks that had been contaminated naturally with infective larvae of nematode parasites of cattle, were each subjected to one of six grazing treatments. The effects of these treatments on the infectivity of the pastures were assessed by slaughter and total worm counts of calves which subsequently grazed the paddocks, and by counts of larvae on pasture samples. Grazing by sheep during autumn resulted in reduced populations of Ostertagia ostertagi and Trichostrongylus axei, both in calves and on the pasture for up to 12 months after treatment. Similar effects were noted on pasture grazed by cattle repeatedly dosed with anthelmintics, and on ungrazed pasture. There was little effect of any treatment on numbers of Cooperia oncophora. It was concluded that the level of autumn contamination was of importance in determining the numbers of O. ostertagi in the following spring and summer.  相似文献

Weaning in suckler calves influences performance in a learning task. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the improved performance after weaning, including relocation, is due to differences in motivation for the reward or in learning abilities. Forty Aubrac calves were used; half of them were weaned from their dams at around eight months, the other half were weaned one month later. After weaning, calves were housed in groups of four in a new setting. From the day after weaning of the last group of calves, the animals were subjected to two tests: (1) an arena test, (2) a T-maze test where one arm led to either a social or a food reward. The T-maze test consisted of three sessions: in Session 1, trials were conducted until the animal acquired the task (i.e. did not take the unrewarded arm on three consecutive trials); in Session 2, the motivation for the reward was assessed via the walking time of the animal to reach the reward; in Session 3, the place of reward was reversed and the animals were trained until they acquired the new task.

Calves weaned for one day explored more (P < 0.05) and had lower heart rates during the arena test (P < 0.05) compared to the ones weaned for one month. During the T-maze test, calves weaned for one month versus one day did not differ in their capacities to learn the initial route (Session 1) or in their motivation for either the social or food reward (Session 2). Calves weaned for one day learned significantly faster (P < 0.05) the reversed route (Session 3) than calves weaned for one month. Hence, the better performances at reversal in the T-maze by calves that have just been weaned cannot be accounted for by a higher motivation for the reward. A better cognitive control of their behaviour due to a lower stress state is suggested by our results.  相似文献

By 30 January 1998, there had been 170,259 confirmed cases of BSE in Great Britain (GB), 1766 confirmed cases in Northern Ireland (NI) (2 January 1998), and 276 confirmed cases in the Republic of Ireland (31 January 1998). Analysis of the epidemiological patterns in the NI epidemic reveals significant clustering of cases in herds and counties. The observed clustering of cases within herds results in lower per capita incidence of BSE in previously unaffected herds, providing support for the introduction of a certified herd scheme in NI. By fitting a backcalculation model to the case data, we can estimate the number of animals infected with the aetiological agent of BSE and project the number of future cases. We predict that the epidemic will decline rapidly, with approximately 99 cases (95% confidence interval 30,504) occurring in the five year period 1997-2001.  相似文献
