The feeding behavior ofDrosophila serido on the yeast communities of necrotic stem tissue ofPilosocereus arrabidae were studied in a sand dune ecosystem of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The prevalence of cactophilic yeasts includingPichia barkeri, Candida sonorensis andGeotrichum sp. in the crops and external surfaces ofD. serido reflected its association with the cactus habitat. The effective number of yeasts vectored on the surface of flies was higher than that in the crops. Also overlap between the yeasts from stems and from crops was partial suggesting selective feeding by the flies in the substrates visited. The females had a higher effective number of yeast species and a lower similarity than males with the yeast community ofP. arrabidae. This was probably related to the search for oviposition sites by females. The presence ofPichia thermotolerans-like andPichia amethionina varpachycereana in the flies, but not inP. arrabidae stems, indicated thatD. serido was not limited to this cactus species. The larvae and adults lived in different patches with the adults feeding in patches with higher yeast species richness. The larvae had a narrower feeding niche and higher overlap withP. arrabidae, and preferredP. barkeri andPichia cactophila as food. Adult flies fed on patches with the most frequent yeasts except forP. cactophila. Pichia caribaea was found in higher frequency in the adult crops than in the stems. Our data suggested that there was food selection and diet partitioning between adult and larval stages ofD. serido.  相似文献

The distribution and diversity of yeast species vectored by and from the crop of eight species groups of Drosophila is described for two rain forest sites and an urban wooded area in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The typical forest Drosophila groups guarani, tripunctata, and willistoni showed a higher diversity of yeasts than the cosmopolitan melanogaster species group, suggesting different strategies of utilization of substrates. Apiculate yeasts, including Kloeckera apis, Kloeckera javanica, and Kloeckera japonica, were the prevalent species. Geotrichum spp. and Candida citea were also frequent isolates in the forest sites. Similarities between the yeasts from the external surfaces and crops of Drosophila suggested that the feeding substrates were the main source of the yeasts vectored by these flies. Most of the yeasts were strong fermenters and assimilated few compounds, usually sucrose, cellobiose, and glycerol. This indicated a preference of the flies for food sources such as fruits. Some yeasts were primarily isolated from one group of Drosophila; for example, Kloeckera javanica from the melanogaster group, Debaryomyces vanrijiae var. yarrowii from the tripunctata group, and Kluyveromyces delphensis from the willistoni group. These associations and differences in the yeast communities among the fly groups suggested a differentiation of diets and specialization of the yeast-Drosophila association in the tropical forests.  相似文献

The yeast communities from necrotic tissues, decaying flowers and fruits, and from larval feeding sites of the mothSigelgaita sp. in the cactusPilosocereus arrabidae were surveyed in three restinga ecosystems in Southeastern Brazil. Insects associated with these substrates were sampled to verify the vectoring of yeasts. The cactusPilosocereus arrabidae was shown to have four different yeast communities associated with it. Necrotic stems had a diverse yeast community with the prevalent speciesPichia barkeri, Candida sonorensis, Pichia cactophila, Geotrichum sp.,Myxozyma mucilagina andSporopachydermia sp. A, representing about 80% of the total isolates.Pichia sp. A and aCandida domercqii-like species represented more than 90% of the yeast isolates from decaying flowers. Fruits had a heterogeneous yeast community with typical fruit yeasts of the genusKloeckera, basidiomicetous anamorphs of the genusCryptococcus, the black yeastAureobasidium pullulans, Pichia sp. A, aCandida domercqii-like species, and some cactophilic yeasts, especiallyClavispora opuntiae. The feeding site ofSigelgaita sp. larvae hadClavispora opuntiae as the prevalent species. Insect vectors are suggested as one the most important factors influencing the composition of these yeast communities.  相似文献

Yeasts from crops of Drosophilidae (154 flies belonging to 22 species) of Lamto savannas (Ivory Coast) were studied. 50 yeast strains (belonging to 19 species) were isolated and studied. The most frequently isolated yeasts wereHanseniaspora andPichia membranaefaciens s.l.; these yeasts ferment and assimilate few of the carbon compounds. Some crops contained until 100 000 yeast cells. Summary At two locations in the Sonoran Desert, yeasts were sampled from species of Drosophila, the flies' cactus hosts, and other neighboring sources of cactophilic yeasts to determine the relation between the yeasts vectored by the fly and the yeasts found in their breeding sites. D. mojavensis, D. nigrospiracula, and D. mettleri vectored yeast assemblages significantly more similar to the yeast species found on the rot from which the flies were collected than to the yeasts found on other rots from the flies host cactus or other rotting cactus at the same site. Rots with Drosophila had fewer yeast species than those without flies, suggesting that flies were associated with younger rots. Rots with flies and the Drosophila also had more yeast species with the capability to produce ethyl acetate than rots without flies. The results support the contention that cactophilic Drosophila feed on a subset of the yeasts available in an area, and may act to maintain differences among the yeast communities found on different species of cactus.  相似文献

Yeasts were found concentrated at the sediment surface and with the highest counts at the most polluted site. Candida krusei, Pichia membranaefaciens and similar species typically forming rugose colonies with radiating ridges were the prevalent yeasts in these sediments, and species like Rhodotorula rubra related to basidiomycetous fungi were found in relatively low numbers.  相似文献

Yeasts with counts of above 106 g−1 wet weight and high diversity were found in the fecal pellets of rodents and marsupials from a mosaic of forest fragments, grasslands, cultivated fields and pasture in Rio de Janeiro. The most frequently isolated yeasts were Debaryomyces hamsenii, Pichia membranaefaciens and Issatchenkia orientalis (and its anamorph Candida krusei ), probably reflecting a high fruit content in the diet of these animals. The opportunistic pathogens Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida tropicalis were isolated at lower frequency. Some Pichia anomala and P. membranaefaciens cultures had killer activity affecting many of the other isolates. These animals can be involved in dispersal of yeasts.  相似文献

Yeasts were isolated from exudates of algarrobo trees from nine sites in northwest Argentina, three in the Chaco region, from pods of algarrobo and acacia, collected in the Quebrada de Cafayate, and from rot pockets in decaying columnar cacti at Cachi (Parc Nacional des Cardons), and at Las Ruinas de Quilmes. Most of the yeasts isolated from exudates of algarrobo were identified asBullera variabilis, Candida famata, Cryptococcus albidus and otherCryptococcus species,Debaryomyces hansenii, Pichia angusta (Hansenula polymorpha),Pichia ciferrii, Pichia farinosa andTorulaspora delbrueckii. OtherCandida, Kluyveromyces andPichia species were found. Most species were osmotolerant. The high sugar content of the exudates influenced the nature of the yeast species present. In a medium containing high concentration of yeast extract was observed aerobic formation of a large amount of ethanol by various yeasts of non-fermenting or extremely poor fermenting type such as Torulopsis famata, Candida polymorpha and Pichia membranaefaciens etc. Acetaldehyde formed as a metabolic intermediate leading to ethanol formation was trapped by the addition of sulfite and was identified as 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazone.  相似文献

Fresh and cooked agave,Drosophila spp., processing equipment, agave molasses, agave extract, and fermenting must at a traditional tequila distillery (Herradura, Amatitan, Jalisco, México) were studied to gain insight on the origin of yeasts involved in a natural tequila fermentations. Five yeast communities were identified. (1) Fresh agave contained a diverse mycobiota dominated byClavispora lusitaniae and an endemic species,Metschnikowia agaveae. (2)Drosophila spp. from around or inside the distillery yielded typical fruit yeasts, in particularHanseniaspora spp.,Pichia kluyveri, andCandida krusei. (3)Schizosaccharomyces pombe prevailed in molasses. (4) Cooked agave and extract had a considerable diversity of species, but includedSaccharomyces cerevisiae. (5) Fermenting juice underwent a gradual reduction in yeast heterogeneity.Torulaspora delbrueckii, Kluyveromyces marxianus, andHanseniaspora spp. progressively ceded the way toS. cerevisiae, Zygosaccharomyces bailii, Candida milleri, andBrettanomyces spp. With the exception ofPichia membranaefaciens, which was shared by all communities, little overlap existed. That separation was even more manifest when species were divided into distinguishable biotypes based on morphology or physiology. It is concluded that crushing equipment and must holding tanks are the main source of significant inoculum for the fermentation process.Drosophila species appear to serve as internal vectors. Proximity to fruit trees probably contributes to maintaining a substantialDrosophila community, but the yeasts found in the distillery exhibit very little similarity to those found in adjacent vegetation. Interactions involving killer toxins had no apparent direct effects on the yeast community structure.  相似文献

Three hundred and eighty three yeasts isolated from samples of unsulphited or sulphited sausages and skinless sausages and minced beef were characterized in detail.Debaryomyces hansenii was the most commonly isolated yeast from most samples followed byCandida zeylanoides andPichia membranaefaciens. The presence of sulphite in sausages did not appear to affect the numbers and range of yeasts present but did affect their relative proportions. A survey of one factory showed that meat intended for sausage production and equipment harboured the same range of yeasts that are found in the finished products.  相似文献

The sexual or teleomorphic state of yeasts has only been described in a few clinically involved species, mainly those of the Saccharomycetaceae family. With the aim of gathering information on their incidence in human pathology, a study has been made of a total of 2,135 strains isolated from clinical samples and cultivated in McClary agar. From these, 8 strains in teleomorphic state were identified: Kluyveromyces marxianus [1], Pichia anomala [2], Pichia farinosa [1], Pichia membranaefaciens [1] and Saccharomyces cerevisiae [3]. The two strains of P. anomala were responsible for fungemia; K. marxianus and the two strains of S. cerevisiae produced vaginitis; the other strains were oral cavity colonizers.  相似文献

The species of the Drosophila fasciola subgroup Wasserman represent the dominant section of the Drosophila repleta group Wasserman in the American rainforests and have a broad geographical distribution in the New World. However, despite of its wide range, the D. fasciola subgroup is one of the most overlooked D. repleta subgroups. Here, we report a molecular phylogenetic analysis focused on the D. fasciola subgroup using two mitochondrial [cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), cytochrome oxidase subunit II (COII)] and two nuclear [elongation factor-1alpha F1 (EF-alphaF1) and transformer (tra)] genes. Overall, we found that this subgroup is a monophyletic taxon, subdivided into two main internal branches: named Fas1 and Fas2 clades. The diversification of these clades is estimated to have begun in the middle Miocene, around 12 Ma [95% high posterior density (HPD) 9.0–15 Ma], and might be associated with the colonization of South America by Central America populations after the closure of Isthmus of Panama due to the temporal congruence between these events. The terminal branches had their origins estimated to be in the Pliocene or the Plio-Pleistocene transition. For the later estimates, both the geomorphological influences and the climatic oscillations of the Pleistocene may have played a role in shaping the diversification of the D. fasciola group.  相似文献

Ascomycete yeasts that both ferment and assimilate xylose were reported previously as associates of insects living in woody substrates. Most notable have been reports of Pichia stipitis-like yeasts that are widely associated with the wood-boring beetle, Odontotaenius disjunctus (Coleoptera: Passalidae), in the eastern United States. Our continuing investigation of insect gut yeasts has lead to the discovery of two new xylose-fermenting yeasts that phylogenetic analysis places as sister taxa. The beetle hosts, O. disjunctus and Phrenapates bennetti (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), are similar in habitat and appearance, and the presence of similar gut yeasts is an additional common feature between them. Here we describe the new yeast genus Spathaspora, the type species S. passalidarum, and its sister taxon Candida jeffriesii and discuss their natural history, including a comparison with Pichia stipitis, another member of a guild of xylose-fermenting yeasts with similar metabolic traits. In addition a morphologically distinct yeast ascospore type is described for Spathaspora.  相似文献

Summary Yeasts were isolated from exudates from trees at three sites in northwest Argentina, two between the towns of Amaicha del Valle and Cafayate and one in the Quebrada de Cafayate, a deep river valley north of Cafayate. The majority of the yeasts were identified asCandida famata andRhodotorula graminis, though isolates of other species ofRhodotorula, Candida boidinii, Pichia membranaefaciens, and occasional isolates of other species were obtained. None of the species was the same as those isolated in Crete, from pods of the carob (European algarrobo). Of 96 cultures investigated, 26 utilized methanol as sole carbon source. The frequency of isolation of methylotrophic yeasts from this habitat may prove to be of considerable scientific and technological interest.This paper is dedicated to Professor Herman Jan Phaff in honor of his 50 years of active research which still continues.  相似文献

A study of the yeast flora of necrotic oranges and associatedDrosophila yielded a total of 221 isolates composed ofKloeckera apiculata (75),Pichia fermentans (75),Pichia kluyveri (50),Torulopsis stellata (17),Hanseniaspora uvarum (2),P. membranaefaciens (1), andCandida vini (1). The yeast species of all samples of oranges and adultDrosophila were very similar; however, the speciesof Drosophila contained a higher proportion ofP. fermentans and a lower proportion ofK. apiculata than was found in the rotting oranges.P. fermentans was subsequently found more frequently on the surface of the necrotic tissue, where the flies feed, than was found internally. SinceP. fermentans characteristically produces a pellicle and pseudomycelium andK. apiculata does not, it is concluded that the growth characteristics of the yeasts are an important factor determining adultDrosophila diets.  相似文献

The interactions of yeasts growing in decaying cactus tissue with and without 2-propanol were studied with respect to the costs and benefits provided to three cactophilic Drosophila species (D. mojavensis, D. arizonensis and D. buzzatii). Two common cactus yeasts, Candida sonorensis and Cryptococcus cereanus, which can tolerate and metabolize 2-propanol, provide benefits to the three Drosophila species in the presence of the alcohol, as compared with another common cactus yeast, Pichia cactophila, which has less tolerance and cannot metabolize 2-propanol. Because 2-propanol is commonly found in decaying cactus tissue and C. sonorensis and Cr. cereanus are also frequently recovered from the rotting tissue being utilized by the Drosophila species, the interactions described here are viewed as a possible adaptation in which the yeast provides benefits to one of its vectors by metabolism of 2-propanol in the habitat.  相似文献

The cactophilic species,Drosophila buzzatii, normally breeds in decaying pockets ofOpuntia cladodes, in which there is a complex interaction with the microbial flora, especially yeast species. Isofemale lines were used to estimate genetic variation among larvae reared on their natural feeding substrate. Four naturally occurring cactophilic yeast species isolated from the same Tunisian oasis as theDrosophila population were used. Two fitness components were studied for each line, viability and developmental time. Genetic variations amongD. buzzatii lines were observed for both traits. A significant yeast species x isofemale line interaction for viability was also evidenced, suggesting the occurrence of specialized genotypes for the utilization of breeding substrates. This genetic heterogeneity in the natural population may favor a better adaptation to the patchily distribution of yeasts.  相似文献

The rapid evolution of male genital morphology is a characteristic feature of several animal groups. Such rapid divergence makes this trait a useful key for species identification. The aedeagus, the intromittent organ of male genitalia, is considered the main diagnostic trait in the Drosophila repleta group. In this study we analysed phenotypic plasticity and genetic variations associated with aedeagus size and shape in the cactophilic sibling species Drosophila gouveai Tidon‐Sklorz and Sene, 2001 and Drosophila antonietae Tidon‐Sklorz and Sene, 2001. Phenotypic plasticity in aedeagus morphology was evaluated in terms of the response to rearing media prepared with each species’ natural host plant, Pilosocereus machrisii Dawson, 1957 and Cereus hildmannianus Schum, 1890 respectively. Our results show that aedeagal shape differed significantly between species and that both shape and size presented host‐related phenotypic plasticity in both species. Flies reared on P. machrisii had, on average, larger aedeagi than those grown in C. hildmannianus. The general shape of aedeagus also differed significantly between flies that emerged in different host cactus. Patterns of variation in aedeagus morphology are discussed in the light of the current knowledge of evolutionary relationships and host plant use, in the D. buzzatii cluster, an assemblage of species in active cladogenesis.  相似文献
