Brown recently proposed that the "good genes" that females pursuewhen choosing mates may be individual heterozygosity becausemore heterozygous mates sire offspring with higher fitness.Further, because heterozygosity might enhance developmentalstability, males with more heterozygosity are recognized bythe reduced fluctuating asymmetry (FA) of their bilaterallypaired traits. We used a point sample of 67 male red-winged blackbirds(Agelaius phoeniceus) to test two predictions of this hypothesis:(1) males with more heterozygosity have higher fitness, and(2) males with more heterozygosity have lower FA. We identified7 polymorphic loci from an initial screening of 16 enzymes;32 individuals were completely homozygous, and 35 individualswere heterozygous at at least 1 locus. Larger and older malesrealized higher mating success in this population, but neither sizenor age was related to heterozygosity. Heterozygous males werenot in better condition than homozygous males, nor were theyless infected by hematozoa, lice, or mites. Among 1-year oldmales, epaulet length did not differ between homozygotes andheterozygotes, but among older males, heterozygotes did havelonger epaulets. Homozygotes and heterozygotes did not differin their mean FA scores for nine individual characters. Althoughthe two groups of males did differ in composite FA, heterozygousmales were less symmetrical. Interestingly, this differencewas attributable to a single allele at the PGM-3 locus. Combinedwith previous results showing that FA was generally unrelatedto male health, viability, parental care, social dominance,or mating success, the present results indicate that Brown's hypothesisdoes not explain mate choice or male quality in this populationof red-winged blackbirds.  相似文献

Studies aimed at determining why female birds often produce offspring sired by males other than their social mates generally compare traits of social and genetic mates. Here I examine paternity patterns in nests of the same female red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in successive breeding seasons. Returning females preferentially selected their former social mates as their new social mates when those males were present. However, paternity patterns were much less consistent. A female''s behaviour (faithful versus unfaithful) in one year did not predict her behaviour the following year. Females unfaithful in successive years did not prefer the same extra-pair males. Females unfaithful in one year that switched social mates the next year did not preferentially choose their former extra-pair mates as their new social mates. By switching genetic mates, females did not generally improve the quality of their mates. These results, together with previous analyses, suggest that female blackbirds in this population have little control over extra-pair mating. Although females may benefit from extra-pair mating because extra-pair males are generally longer lived, paternity patterns in this population are not consistent with extra-pair mating being part of a finely tuned female reproductive strategy.  相似文献

We studied mate and site fidelity between years in an Englishpopulation of blackbirds (Turdus merula) from 1985 to 1991.Divorce was observed in 32% of 183 cases where mates had survivedfrom the previous breeding season. After divorces, females tendedto nest farther from their original site than males did, butthere was no sex difference in distance moved after the deathof a mate. The mean annual fledgling production of 60 m x 60m breeding sites was statistically repeatable among years, evenafter accounting for possible differences in reproductive performanceamong site-tenacious individuals. Divorce rates were greatestin low-quality sites. We found no annual fitness cost associatedwith mating with an unfamiliar bird. However, breeding in anew site cost on average one fledgling per year.  相似文献

Sexual selection can act through variation in the number of social mates obtained, variation in mate quality, or variation in success at obtaining extra-pair fertilizations. Because within-pair fertilizations (WPF) and extra-pair fertilizations (EPF) are alternate routes of reproduction, they are additive, rather than multiplicative, components of fitness. We present a method for partitioning total variance in reproductive success (a measure of the opportunity for selection) when fitness components are both additive and multiplicative and use it to partition the variance into components that correspond to each mechanism of sexual selection. Computer simulations show that extra-pair fertilizations can either increase or decrease total variance, depending on the covariance between within-pair and extra-pair success. Simulations also suggest that for socially monogamous species, extra-pair fertilizations have a greater effect than variation in mate quality or pairing status on the opportunity for selection. Application of our model to data gathered for a population of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) indicates that most of the variance in male reproductive success was attributable to within-pair sources of variance. Nevertheless, extra-pair copulations increased the opportunity for selection because males varied both in the proportion of their social young that they sired and in the number of extra-pair mates that they obtained. Furthermore, large and positive covariances existed between the number of extra-pair mates a male obtained and both social pairing success and within-pair paternity, indicating that, in this population, males preferred as social mates also were preferred as extra-pair mates.  相似文献

Male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) provisioned50%(118/235) of available broods over an 8-year period. In mostcases, each male provisioned only the oldest brood on his territory,but in 21 cases, the male fed a younger brood after first feedingan older one. In 10 of these cases the switch to the youngerbrood followed predation of the older brood, but in the remaining11 cases the cause of the switch was unknown. To determine whethermale red-winged blackbirds adjust their provisioning when thedemands of their broods change, we exchanged broods betweenpairs of nests on 10 territories. Before each exchange, eachmale had been feeding nestlings of only one of the two broods.In response to the exchanges, male (and female) red-winged blackbirdsimmediately adjusted their rates of provisioning to the increasedor decreased demands of the broods. In addition, most malesswitched their provisioning within a day after the exchangeso that they fed the same broods as before the exchanges. Ourresults show that male red-winged blackbirds adjust their provisioningwhen the demands of their broods change and suggest that maleshave enough information about other nesting attempts on theirterritories to shift to a more profitable brood when the expectedbenefits of provisioning change. Male red-winged blackbirdsdo not appear to follow an investment strategy based on priorinvestments (i.e., they do not commit the "Concorde fallacy").  相似文献

Red-winged blackbirds are polygynous and show strong breeding site preferences, but it is unclear which environmental factors regulate their reproductive success and are ultimately responsible for shaping their patterns of habitat selection and their mating system. We evaluated the effect of variation in insect emergence rates on the reproductive success of male and female redwings nesting on replicate ponds. The number of male and female redwings that settled on a pond varied two- to three-fold among ponds, but was not related to insect emergence rates. Insect emergence rates had a positive effect on the number of nestlings successfully fledged by females, the number of nestlings fledged from male territories, and on the mass of nestlings at fledging. Typha stem density also varied widely among ponds, and was positively related to male and female settling density and mass of nestlings at fledging, but not to the number of nestlings fledged by females or males. We conclude that alternative breeding sites differ in their ability to support redwing reproduction, and that the availability of emerging odonates is an important environmental factor influencing the reproductive success of both male and female red-winged blackbirds. We consider resource-defense polyandry and mate-access polyandryas female mating tactics in spotted sandpipers (Actitis macularia).These tactics can be distinguished by the resource females defend,female interclutch movement, expected reproductive success aftermoving, and male and female dispersion. We examine these characteristicsrelative to patterns observed in a 17-year study of spottedsandpipers, a species traditionally considered resource-defensepolyandrous. On average, 26% of spotted sandpiper females eachyear were monogamous. Older females were more likely to be polyandrous,and polyandrous females of each age employed different matingtactics. Yearlings were typically sequentially resourcedefensepolyandrous. Two-year-olds were primarily simultaneously polyandrous,exhibiting equivalent proportions of resource-defense and mate-accesspolyandry. Older females were primarily simultaneously resource-defensepolyandrous. Females tended to stay on territories where theyand/or their mates had greater breeding experience (i.e., manyclutches laid for females, many clutches diat hatched for males);females that moved went to territories where their mates hada history of breeding success. Location changes between clutchesby polyandrous females were better described by breeding experienceon a territory than by age.  相似文献

The polygyny threshold model assumes that polygynous mating is costly to females and proposes that females pay the cost of polygyny only when compensated by obtaining a superior territory or male. We present, to the authors' knowledge, the first experimental field test to demonstrate that females trade mating status against territory quality as proposed by this hypothesis. Previous work has shown that female red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in Ontario prefer settling with unmated males and that this preference is adaptive because polygynous mating status lowers female reproductive success. Other evidence suggests that nesting over water increases the reproductive success of female red-winged blackbirds. Here we describe an experiment in which females were given choices between two adjacent territories, one owned by an unmated male without any over-water nesting sites and the other by an already-mated male with over-water sites. Females overwhelmingly preferred the already-mated males, demonstrating that superior territory quality can reverse preferences based on mating status and supporting the polygyny threshold model as the explanation for polygyny in this population.  相似文献

Great-tailed grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus) are sexually dimorphic,dichromatic, colonially nesting blackbirds. In this study, males pursued three basic types of conditional mating strategies,each of which employed a different set of mating tactics. Territorialmales defended one or more trees in which several females nested.They achieved reproductive success by siring the offspringof their social mates and through extrapair fertilization.Resident males lived in the colony but did not defend territoriesor have social mates. Transient males passed through the colony, staying no more than a few days, and probably visited more thanone colony. Residents appeared to queue for access to territories,but transients did not. Residents and transients gained allpaternity through extrapair fertilizations and provided noparental care. Territorial males sired the majority of offspring,but residents and transients also sired small numbers of nestlings. Territorial males were larger and had longer tails than nonterritorialmales. The number of social mates was related to body size,and males that sired nestlings were heavier and had longertails than males with no genetic reproductive success. Malesthat gained paternity through extrapair fertilization wereheavier and had longer tails than males that did not. The matingsystem of great-tailed grackles can best be categorized as "non-faithful-female frank polygyny."  相似文献

Female brood parasites are recognized as threats to reproductive success by many host species. Male brood parasites may accompany females while they search for nests to parasitize and males depredate nests throughout the nesting cycle. Hence, selection may also favour recognition of males. We examined whether two common host species perceive male brown-headed cowbirds ( Molothrus ater ) as brood parasites, as nest predators, or neither. We quantified visits of male cowbirds to nests of yellow warblers ( Dendroica petechia ) and red-winged blackbirds ( Ageliaus phoeniceus ) to assess the frequency with which these host species interact with male cowbirds. Males were observed near nests during hosts' laying and incubating stages, although less frequently than female cowbirds. No visits by cowbirds occurred while parents cared for nestlings. We then presented models of male and female cowbirds plus a non-threatening control to yellow warblers and red-winged blackbirds during laying and nestling periods. If hosts perceive males and females similarly, they should respond more intensely to the cowbird models during the laying period, when nests are most likely to be parasitized. Both species responded similarly to male and female cowbird models during laying, which suggests that hosts view cowbirds of both sexes as threats. The responses of yellow warblers with nestlings to male cowbirds were strongly influenced by the order of model presentation. Warblers first presented with the male cowbird gave much reduced anti-parasite responses than those that first interacted with the female then the male cowbird. These results suggest that yellow warblers recognized male vs. female cowbirds, but that discrimination was not expressed during laying. By contrast, red-winged blackbirds did not discriminate between male and female cowbirds at either nesting stage.  相似文献

In many species, territorial neighbours fight to establish their mutual border and then develop a truce, known as the dear-enemy phenomenon, characterized by reduced vigilance and aggression along the border. We present evidence that among male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) the dear-enemy relationship is a form of reciprocal conditional cooperation that is stabilized, at least in part, by retaliation against cheaters. Simulated intrusions by randomly chosen neighbours were punished by a targeted increase in vigilance and aggression that persists for days. We interpret this increase in vigilance towards trespassers as a manifestation of distrust. The conditional decrease in vigilance and aggression is tempered by each neighbour's probability of cuckolding the focal male. Male red-winged blackbirds maintained greater vigilance and aggression towards sexually attractive neighbours that were more successful at extra-pair fertilizations (EPFs). It is unlikely that males directly observed neighbours copulating with their mates. They were more likely to assess a neighbour's ability to achieve extra-pair copulations using surrogate cues that correlate with success at EPFs, including body size. Our results suggest that red-winged blackbirds use rules that incorporate their neighbour's behaviour and quality in their territorial interactions with one another. Our results expand our understanding of cooperation for animals and for humans as well.  相似文献

I investigated how mate quality and territory quality influencean extravagant ornament in a socially monogamous species thatdefends multipurpose territories. Northern cardinals (Cardinaliscardinalis) are a highly dichromatic, socially monogamous species,and males are a brilliant red. I conducted a 3-year field studyof northern cardinals and found that redder males produced moreoffspring in a breeding season. Two selective factors mediatedthis fitness gain. Redder males were paired with earlier breedingfemales, an established measure of mate quality in birds. Second,redder males obtained territories of higher quality, as measuredby vegetation density. Interactions among these factors werealso important in explaining variance in male reproductive success.Multivariate analysis indicated that earlier breeding increasedreproductive success independent of territory quality. In turn,territory quality contributed to male reproductive success throughits effect on nest survival and possibly through its role in attractingan earlier breeding female.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism, particularly in ornamental traits, is likely to have arisen by sexual selection. Most empirical and theoretical studies of sexual dimorphism assume that ongoing sexual selection also maintains the dimorphism. Over four seasons, I measured the sexual selection acting on three sexually dimorphic attributes (epaulet size, body size, and the blackness of the body plumage) of male red-winged blackbirds and found no consistent directional or stabilizing selection on any of them. Correlational selection was also negligible. I used path analysis to explore potential relationships in more detail but found no direct or indirect effects of male traits on either within- or extrapair success. Males who were resident on the marsh for more years had higher within-pair success, primarily because they spent more of the season on their territory. Experimental manipulations of epaulet size and color and the extent of nonblack feathers in the black body plumage had no detectable effect on the number of within-pair mates, paternity, or the number of extrapair offspring sired in nearby territories. These results combine with data from other studies of red-winged blackbirds to suggest that, despite high variation in male mating success and hence a strong opportunity for sexual selection, several morphological attributes that differ between the sexes and vary among males are not under current sexual selection. The possible explanations for why add complexity to our understanding of how sexual selection operates.  相似文献

Data from a 3-year study of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaiusphoeniceus) were used to test the hypothesis that parasites(in this case, haematozoa) reduce male fitness and cause diminishedexpression of secondary sexual traits, which, in turn, are usedby females to select parasite-free males as mates. There wasno evidence indicating a fitness cost to being parasitized becauseparasitized males were as likely as unparasitized males to acquirea territory and to survive from one year to the next. Similarly,parasitized and unparasitized females did not differ with regardto how early they started nesting, how many eggs they laid,or their year-to-year survival. Secondary sexual traits, particularlyintrasexual aggression, did reliably (>80%) reveal the parasitestatus of males. Plumage and morphological traits also alloweddiscrimination of parasitized and unparasitized females. However,apparent mating patterns were unrelated to either the males'or the females' parasite status. Only if genetic analyses revealthat unparasitized males actually realize higher productivesuccess will these results potentially provide support for theparasite hypothesis of sexual selection.  相似文献

Male-male competition and reproductive success of northern elephantseals, Mirounga augustirostris, was studied for six consecutivebreeding seasons at Año Nuevo Island, California. Theconclusions were as follows: (i) Less than one third of themales in residence copulate during a breeding season. A fewmales are responsible for the majority of copulations, (ii)The number and age of males copulating varies with: (a) haremlocation and topography, (b) the number of estrous females inthe harem, and (c) the number of males competing for females,(iii) Copulation frequency is related directly to success inmale-male competition, i.e., social rank. (iv) The same individualsmay dominate breeding for three consecutive breeding seasons.(v) Successful males die within a year or two after their reproductivepeak. (vi) The reproductive success of most males is nil orlow because many die before reaching breeding age and some ofthose that reach maturity are prevented from mating by the highestranking males. (vii) Individual strategies have important consequencesfor reproductive success, (viii) Male-male competition is amajor cause of pup mortality prior to weaning. The potential reproductive success of males is much greaterthan that of females. Changes in colony number and compositionaffect the reproductive success of males as well as females.  相似文献

To determine across-year patterns in plasma testosterone (T) and corticosterone (B) levels in free-living birds, we took blood samples in the same 2-week breeding period during 4 consecutive years from territorial male red-winged blackbirds. We used our data to test predictions of the "challenge hypothesis" of T secretion and also to examine hormonal correlations with age, breeding experience, breeding density, and reproductive success. Average T and B levels across years were not significantly different. Within individuals, T levels between years were, in general, highly variable. T levels of males with territories in high-density breeding areas were significantly higher than those of males with territories in low-density areas. T levels were positively correlated with harem size and there was a trend for males with high T levels to fledge more offspring. We found no relationships between T and B levels and male age or breeding experience. Some results of the study were consistent with the predictions of the challenge hypothesis. This study constitutes one of the few examinations of across-year patterns in circulating hormone levels in wild populations.  相似文献

Extra-pair paternity (EPP) is a widespread and highly variable reproductive phenomenon in birds. We tested the effects of habitat, spatial factors, and timing of breeding on the occurrence of EPP in red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus). We used PCR-amplified microsatellites to assess the paternity of 1479 nestlings from 537 broods on 235 territories over four breeding seasons. Over 4 years, 40% of nestlings were extra-pair. At least 27% of actual sires were non-neighbours, suggesting that males or females interacted over longer distances than in other populations of red-winged blackbirds. The level of EPP was significantly clumped within broods and males but not within females across broods. EPP was negatively related to the area of a male's territory. The spatial proximity of a female's nest to the territory boundary had no effect on total EPP, but tended to increase the probability of an EPP by a nearby male. We found no influence on EPP of the type of habitat on the territory or the level of nesting activity nearby. The time in the season when a nest was started and the synchrony of breeding also had no significant effect on the level of EPP. The age of the male, the age of his neighbours, and the interaction between the two had no effect on total EPP. However, older males were less likely to have an offspring sired by a neighbour on their territory. Males with older neighbours were also less likely to have offspring sired by a neighbour, particularly if they were new territory owners. The high variability in who gained and lost paternity, and the limited impact of spatial and temporal factors influencing it, have some interesting implications for theories seeking to explain mating patterns.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that the plumage coloration of male birds can act as an honest signal of quality, indicating benefits that a female could gain from pairing with a specific male. In some species, females also display ornamental plumage, but less is known about the function and potential adaptive significance of female coloration because most research has focused on male coloration. Male Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides) display full body, ultraviolet (UV)‐blue plumage, whereas female plumage is more subdued, with blue color focused on the rump, wing, and tail. During the 2011 and 2012 breeding seasons (May–July) near Kamloops, BC, Canada, we examined coloration of the rump and tail of female Mountain Bluebirds to determine if their plumage could act as an indicator of direct reproductive benefits (e.g., enhanced parental care or reproductive success) to potential mates. We found no relationship between female plumage coloration and either provisioning rate or fledging success. However, female coloration varied with age, with after‐second‐year (ASY) females having brighter, more UV‐blue tail feathers than second‐year (SY) females. In addition, ASY females with brighter, more UV‐blue tails had larger clutches. We also observed positive assortative mating by tarsus length. Because previous work with other species suggests that female body size may be a good predictor of breeding success, males could potentially benefit from pairing with larger females. However, reproductive success did not vary with female size in our study. Although our evidence that structural plumage coloration of female Mountain Bluebirds is a signal of direct reproductive benefits for males (e.g., higher reproductive success) is limited, our results (i.e., ASY females with brighter tails than SY females, and ASY females with brighter tails having larger clutches) do suggest the potential for sexual selection to act on female coloration.  相似文献

In Caribbean Panama, nonreproductive male and female stomatopods are solitary and defend their own coral-rubble cavities. When breeding pairs form, however, males assume all responsibility for cavity defense. To compare success in cavity defense and defensive tactics among paired and unpaired males, and to examine the tendency for paired stomatopods to exchange their present mates for larger (higher quality) individuals, we introduced same-sized and 15% larger male, and same-sized and 15% larger reproductive female intruders to paired and unpaired male residents in a balanced design. Paired males were more successful at cavity defense than unpaired males, evidently because paired males strike intruders more than unpaired males, and because intruders fight less intensely against paired males than against unpaired males. Paired males occasionally attempted extrapair copulations, but showed little tendency to abandon their mates in favor of larger females. Paired females, however, mated readily with intruder males that evicted resident males. Populationwide female breeding synchrony and prolonged female receptivity before oviposition reduce variance in male mating success and may force males to guard the breeding cavity to assure their paternity. Uncertainty about the reproductive condition of intruder females may prevent males from exchanging mates.  相似文献

1. We investigated age-related changes in two reproductive traits (laying date and annual fecundity) in barn swallows Hirundo rustica L. using a mixed model approach to di-stinguish among between- and within-individual changes in breeding performance with age. 2. We tested predictions of age-related improvements of competence (i.e. constraint hypothesis) and age-related progressive disappearance of poor-quality breeders (i.e. selection hypothesis) to explain age-related increase in breeding performance in early life. 3. Reproductive success increased in early life, reaching a plateau at middle age (e.g. at 3 years of age) and decreasing at older age (> 4 years). Age-related changes in breeding success were due mainly to an effect of female age. 4. Age of both female and male affected timing of reproduction. Final linear mixed effect models (LME) for laying date included main and quadratic terms for female and male age, suggesting a deterioration in reproductive performance at older age for both males and females. 5. We found evidence supporting the constraints hypothesis that increases in competence within individuals, with ageing being the most probable cause of the observed increase in breeding performance with age in early life. Two mechanisms were implicated: (1) advance in male arrival date with age provided middle-aged males with better access to mates. Yearling males arrived later to the breeding grounds and therefore had limited access to high-quality mates. (2) Breeding pairs maintaining bonds for 2 consecutive years (experienced pairs) had higher fecundity than newly formed inexperienced breeding pairs. 6. There was no support for the selection hypothesis because breeding performance was not correlated with life span. 7. We found a within-individual deterioration in breeding and migratory performance (arrival date) in the oldest age-classes consistent with senescence in these reproductive and migratory traits.  相似文献
