The morphology, reproduction and seasonal variation of a large foliose species of Cryptonemia collected in the drift in 1971–73 at Cork Harbour, Republic of Ireland, is described and compared with the known species of the genus. Although obviously closely related to a group of foliose Pacific species: C. borealis Kylin, C. obovata J. Ag. and C. angustata (Setch. et Gardn.) Dawson, the Irish Cryptonemia is not completely identifiable with any one of these and is therefore described as C. hibernica sp. nov., pending a revision of the genus.  相似文献

Three Cocconeis Ehrenberg species, epiphytic on the leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile, were studied by light and electron microscopy. A new species, C. pseudonotata, is described which is closely related to C. notata Petit and C. diruptoides Hustedt. Gross morphology and the presence of a sigmoid raphe and sternum are the characters shared by the three species, whereas the central areas of sternum and raphe-sternum valves, and the stria and areola densities are the main distinctive characters for the species when observed by light microscopy. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic observations revealed that the fine structure of areolae must be also considered in order to identify the species. Comparison among the three species has been carried out by observations on material from our samples, as well as on the type material of C. diruptoides and cleaned samples from the Hustedt collection. The study also provides new information on the geographical distribution of these species.  相似文献

Study of Lessonia in southern Chile and Argentina indicates that it is represented there by three species: L. nigrescens Bory, L. flavicans Bory and L. vadosa Searles sp. nov. Plants of these three species have been confused with each other in the literature, but appear clearly separable. Lessonia nigrescens is distinguished from the others by its massive, solid holdfast and numerous stipes. In Lessonia flavicans and L. vadosa a single stipe arises from a branched holdfast. These two species are distinguishable from each other in details of blade morphology, anatomy, and ecology. The taxonomic status of plants in South America outside of the study area remains unresolved. Populations in the Falkland Islands and in northern Chile in particular are in need of further study.  相似文献

Two new species of the red algal genus Predaea are described from Australia. The first, Predaea aurora Kraft et G.W. Saunders, sp. nov., is unusual in its cool‐temperate distribution and in a number of anatomical attributes, most notably the rhizoid‐like habit of the nutritive filaments associated with the auxiliary cells. The second species, Predaea tumescens Kraft et G.W. Saunders, sp. nov., inhabits a coral reef habitat more typical of the genus but nonetheless differs in a number of anatomical details from other reported species. Nuclear small subunit rDNA sequences have confirmed the affinity of P. aurora to other species currently included in this genus. Molecular analyses further indicate that Predaea belongs in the Nemastomataceae and that the Nemastomataceae and Schizymeniaceae are sister taxa in an independent clade of “lineage 4” florideophyte algae. As such, a proposal is made to resurrect the Nemastomatales Kylin emend. G.W. Saunders et Kraft to accommodate these two families. Within the Schizymeniaceae, the Australian‐endemic Platoma australicum and Platoma foliosum were only distantly related to the other included Platoma, Schizymenia, and Titanophora spp. We therefore propose Wetherbeella G.W. Saunders et Kraft, gen. nov., to accommodate these two species. An additional outcome of our molecular analyses is that the genus Tsengia is not a member of the Nemastomataceae (where it is currently placed) but rather forms an independent lineage in the Halymeniales that we now designate as the Tsengiaceae G.W. Saunders et Kraft, fam. nov. Finally, the South African Nemastoma lanceolatum J. Agardh is transferred to Tsengia.  相似文献

Epiphytic diatoms were collected from both the leaves and internodes of Ruppia maritima in a New Jersey salt marsh during the growing season of the host plant. Community diversity (H and the number of diatom taxa) values were initially high as Ruppia began its growth, but quickly dropped to sustained low levels as vegetative growth of the host ceased and new attachment sites were no longer available. A critical examination of all structural characteristics indicated that the leaves and internodes of Ruppia support a single, nearly homogeneous epiphytic diatom community. An analysis of variance indicated that differences between leaves and internodes were minimal, as did a comparison of the assemblages present on these two sites by a selected similarity index. A total of 57 taxa were encountered and the single dominant taxon was Navicula pavillardi, which accounted for one out of every three individuals counted. A comparison of the epiphytic diatom community with those inhabiting the sediments on the marsh proper revealed that the marsh sediments were the major source of individuals for Ruppia colonization.  相似文献

In recent years a consensus has emerged from molecular phylogenetic investigations favoring a common endosymbiotic ancestor for all chloroplasts. It is within this conceptual framework that most comparative analyses of eukaryotic biochemistry and genetics now are interpreted. One of the first and most influential sources of data leading to this consensus is the remarkable similarity in genome content among all major plastid lineages. Here we report statistical analyses of two sequence data sets, genes encoding ribosomal proteins and transfer RNAs, from representatives of the three primary plastid lineages and a mitochondrion. The latter almost certainly originated in an independent endosymbiotic association and serves as a control for similarity due to convergent evolution. When genes related to organelle‐specific function are factored out, plastid genomes appear to be no more similar to each other than they are to the mitochondrion. Total similarities in gene content, measured as deviations from the expectation from a process of random gene loss, are correlated with the extent of reduction in the two genomes compared. They do not appear to reflect putative evolutionary relationships among plastids. These analyses indicate that similarities in plastid genome content are better explained by convergent evolution due to constraint on gene loss than by a shared evolutionary history. A review of other data cited as support for a single plastid origin suggests that the alternative hypothesis of multiple origins is at least equally consistent in most cases.  相似文献

A new marine microalga from the Mediterranean Sea, Crustomastix stigmatica Zingone, is investigated by means of LM, SEM, TEM, and pigment and molecular analyses (nuclear‐encoded small subunit [SSU] rDNA and plastid‐encoded rbcL). Pigment and molecular information is also provided for the related species Dolichomastix tenuilepis Throndsen et Zingone. Crustomastix stigmatica has a bean‐shaped cell body 3–5 μm long and 1.5–2.8 μm wide, with two flagella four to five times the body length. The single chloroplast is pale yellow‐green, cup‐shaped, and lacks a pyrenoid. A small bright yellow stigma is located in the mid‐dorsal part of the cell under the chloroplast membrane. An additional accumulation of osmiophilic globules is at times seen in a chloroplast lobe. Cells lack flat scales, whereas three different types of hair‐like scales are present on the flagella. The main pigments of C. stigmatica are those typical of Mamiellales, though siphonein/siphonaxanthin replaces prasinoxanthin and uriolide is absent. The pigment pool of D. tenuilepis is more similar to that of Micromonas pusilla (Butcher) Manton et Parke and of other Mamiellales. The nuclear SSU rDNA phylogeny shows that the inclusion of C. stigmatica and D. tenuilepis in the Mamiellales retains monophyly for the order. The two species form a distinct clade, which is sister to a clade including all the other Mamiellales. Results of rbcL analyses failed to provide phylogenetic information at both the order and species level. No unique morphological or pigment characteristics circumscribe the mamiellalean clade as a whole nor its two daughter clades.  相似文献

The tarsal flexor system, a novel system of retinacular structures, is described for the first time based on morphological and ultrastructural examinations of several Neotropical harvestmen (Opiliones: Laniatores). The tarsal flexor system is made up of many individual pulleys that function to maintain close apposition between the tendon and internal ventral surface of the cuticle in the tarsus. Pulley cells are specialized tendinous cells that form the semi‐circular, retinacular pulley system in the tarsus; these cells contain parallel arrays of microtubules that attach to cuticular fibers extending from deep within the cuticle (i.e., tonofibrillae). The tarsal flexor system is hypothesized to provide mechanical advantage for tarsal flexion and other movements of the tarsus. This system is discussed with regards to other lineages of Opiliones, especially those that exhibit prehensility of the tarsus (i.e., Eupnoi). Comparing tarsal morphology of laniatorid harvestmen to other well‐studied arachnids, we review some literature that may indicate the presence of similar tarsal structures in several arachnid orders. The general internal organization of the tarsus is described, and ultrastructural data are presented for a number of tarsal structures, including sensilla chaetica and the tarsal perforated organ. Sensilla chaetica possess an internal lumen with dendritic processes in the center and exhibit micropores at the distal tip. With respect to the tarsal perforated organ, we found no ultrastructural evidence for a sensory or secretory function, and we argue that this structure is the result of a large pulley attachment site on the internal surface of the cuticle. Navicula mutica (Kütz.) var. mutica was isolated from the air, cloned on agar, cultured in soil-water bottle, and studied with transmission and scanning electron micros-ropy. The frustules were lanceolate to ovoid with rounded apices, with the apical axis 8.5 ± 3.2 μ and the trans-apical and the transapical axis 3.6 ± 0.6 μm. Striae were composed of two or three puncta, and the mantle bore a single row of puncta aligned with the striae. The ends of the raphe turned away from an isolated punctual in the central area of the valve. The mantle puncta and one or two of the valve-face puncta in each stria opened into a series of transapical grooves in the interior of the valve, the grooves contributing to the appearance of striae in the light microscope. The interior of the mantle also possessed a pair of longitudinal grooves, discontinuous at the apices of the valves. An undulate advalvar margin of the valvocopula likely articulates along the interior longitudinal groove of the mantle. The projections of the undulate margin are perhaps positioned between the transapical grooves and along the longitudinal groove between the dentiform structures formed by the intersection of the double-grooved system. The girdle bands each had two (occasionally three) rows of pores. The pleurae margins were straight and not undulate.  相似文献

Valves of S. niagarae var. niagarae Ehr. and S. niagarae var. magnifica Fricke from geographically dispersed sediment and plankton collections were observed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (LM and SEM). Measurements made by LM can be arranged so that means and ranges of diameter, areolar density, or strial density intergrade from one population into the next. Mean diameter is negatively related to increasing areolar and strial densities. No unique features observable by SEM distinguish the two described varieties. Thus, S. niagarae var. magnifica, having large diameter valves with low areolar and strial densities, may represent one end of a trend in overall variation in S. niagarae. At the opposite extreme are the populations with small valves and high areolar densities which are often erroneously referred to as S. astraea. Type material of S. niagarae lies intermediate to these forms. Three populations considered in this study have distinct morphological characteristics. Valves from Yellowstone Lake sediments have spine placements distinctly different from valves of all other populations. Specimens from Lake Superior have nearly flat central areas. Ribs of valves from Grand Traverse Bay (Lake Michigan) are covered with granules.  相似文献

An analysis of the dynamic responses of a population of Volvox aureus to artificially-imposed alternations in mixing and stratification in a large limnetic enclosure (“Lund Tube” C, Blelham Tarn) is presented. The rates of population increase are shown to be regulated largely through the propagation of daughter colonies that are subsequently released into the medium. The efficiency of propagation is measured in terms of the numbers of developing daughter colonies in parent colonies at any time and the time required for their maturation prior to release. Efficiency of propagation increased when the vegetative population was unmixed and decreased when it was mixed through an optically-deeper water column. Self-regulation of vertical position in the depth profile also influences propagation and, hence, the rate of population increase.  相似文献

A new species of Gonyaulax, here named Gonyaulax baltica sp. nov., has been isolated from sediment samples from the southeastern Baltic. Culture strains were established from individually isolated cysts, and cyst formation was induced in a nitrogen‐depleted medium. Although G. baltica cysts are similar to some forms attributed to Spiniferites bulloideus and the motile stage of G. baltica has affinities with G. spinifera, the combination of features of cyst and motile stage of G. baltica is unique. The culture strains were able to grow at salinity levels from 5 to 55 psu and formed cysts from 10 to 50 psu. Cultures at each salinity level were grown at 12, 16, and 20° C. Temperature‐ and salinity‐controlled morphological variability was found in the resting cysts. Central body size varied with temperature and salinity, and process length varied with salinity. Cysts that formed at extreme salinity levels displayed lower average process length than cysts formed at intermediate salinity levels, and central body length and width were lowest at higher temperature and lower salinity. Models for the relationship between central body size and temperature/salinity and process length and salinity have been developed and may be used to determine relative paleosalinity and paleotemperature levels. Our results on salinity‐dependent process length confirm earlier reports on short‐spined cysts of this species found in low salinity environments, and the model makes it possible to attempt to quantify past salinity levels.  相似文献

The diversity of chloroplast forms, and their number and cellular location, as well as pyrenoid structure, distinguishes diatoms from other groups of heterokont algae. The fine chloroplast structure is considered to be informative for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of diatoms. Six species of diatoms belonging to different classes have been examined with transmission electron microscopy. New data on the chloroplast structure have been obtained. Characteristics of the pyrenoid ultrastructure of diatoms belonging to various phylogenetic clades have been defined more precisely. The results specify the ultrastructure of pyrenoids for different phylogenetic clades of diatoms and contribute to the previously obtained data.  相似文献

The lack of mesocoelomic pores and the existence of a stone canal connecting proto-and mesocoel are characteristic peculiarities of echinoderms in contrast with the situation in other trimeric archicoelomates. The ultrastructure of the stone canal has been studied in order to understand its function in the strategically important position between two coelomic spaces with different functions. The epithelium of the Eucidaris (Echinoidea) stone canal is composed of three cell types: (1) ciliated cells, (2) cells with long basal processes containing myofilaments, and (3) granulated cells, which may represent secretory neurons. Nerve fibres of two types are common in the epithelium. We consider the stone canal to be a structure controlling fluid transport; its wall may exert peristaltic movements or tonic contractions and dilations which are under control of the nervous system. The ciliated cells additionally may have phagocytotic capacities. Similarities with the fine structure of the wall of the mesocoelomic pores in the pterobranch Cephalodiscus are discussed.  相似文献

The canal-bearing diatom genus Nagumoea, described based on only morphological evidence, was tentatively assigned to the order Bacillariales, although its phylogenetic position remained unclear. Because three isolates of Nagumoea (SK002, SK024 and SK053) were successfully established from Japanese coasts, we performed their morphological observations and molecular phylogenetic analyses to discuss the phylogeny and taxonomic position of this genus. Strains SK002 and SK024 were identified as Nagumoea africana, whereas SK053 conformed with Nagumoea serrata. There was high interspecific divergence between N. africana and N. serrata in the rbcL sequences (8.03–8.17%), indicating their distinctness. Furthermore, intraspecific variations were detected within N. africana (2.35%) in the rbcL, implying its cryptic diversity. The maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic trees inferred from the plastid rbcL, psbC and nuclear 18S rDNA genes recovered Nagumoea as monophyletic with strong statistical support and embedded within an unresolved, poorly supported lineage containing Achnanthes, Craspedostauros, Staurotropis and Undatella in the canal-bearing order Bacillariales (= the family Bacillariaceae). Although the constrained tree based on the monophyly of Nagumoea and the other canal-bearing clade (Surirellales and Rhopalodiales) was statistically rejected by the topology tests, the phylogenetic position of Nagumoea with other Bacillarialean members remains equivocal. The possession of two plastids positioned fore and aft, observed in the present study, and lack of keel, typical of the Bacillariales, indicate the possibility of Nagumoea being part of the ingroup of the Bacillariales or its closely related outgroup.  相似文献

Based on analyses with cryo‐scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the present study reports on the morphology and ultrastructure of the attachment structures of the green stinkbug Nezara viridula L. (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a cosmopolitan pest of different crops in most areas of the world. In addition, the presence and distribution of large proportions of the elastic protein resilin in these structures was revealed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The attachment structures of each leg comprise two sclerotised claws, a pair of smooth flexible pulvilli and a hairy adhesive pad located at the ventral side of the basitarsus. No sexual dimorphism is evident. Contact areas of resting individuals on a smooth surface show that N. viridula creates contact to the substrate with the ventral surface of (a) the distal portions of the pulvilli, (b) the setae of the hairy adhesive pad, (c) the two paraempodia representing mechanosensory setae, and (d) the tips of the claws. Each pulvillus is a sac‐like structure formed by complex cuticular layers that vary in their structure and resilin content. The dorsal side consists of sclerotised chitinous material, while the ventral cuticle consists mainly of resilin and shows a very thin epicuticle and a thick exocuticle. The setae of the hairy adhesive pad are pointed and socketed. They exhibit a pronounced longitudinal gradient in the material composition, with large proportions of resilin being present in the setal tips. In most of these setae, especially in those of the distal‐most part of the pad, also a transverse gradient in the material composition is visible.  相似文献

1. Stormwater management ponds (SWMPs) are taking the place of natural ponds and wetlands in urban areas. SWMPs have the potential to serve as hotspots for nutrient cycling, yet little is known about how urban catchments affect nutrient chemistry and stoichiometry within these ponds. 2. We sampled 50 SWMPs in Southern Ontario, Canada, to characterise their seston stoichiometry and make comparisons with published lake and pond data and models of seston stoichiometry. We tested (i) whether C : N : P ratios were similar to natural ponds and small lakes, (ii) whether seston stoichiometry was scale dependent and (iii) whether variability in seston chemistry could be explained by landscape and pond characteristics, such as catchment imperviousness and hydrological condition (based on recently received rainfall). 3. Seston C : N and C : P ratios were significantly lower in SWMPs than published ratios for small lakes, likely because of high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in SWMPs. Our results also showed no dependency of stoichiometric ratios on pond size. Analyses of ratios versus landscape and pond characteristics revealed significant relationships only when ponds were grouped based on the hydrological condition of the catchments. 4. It is likely that SWMPs function very differently during wet and dry periods. When SWMPs are disconnected from the landscape after a lengthy dry period, internal processes become increasingly important for seston stoichiometry.  相似文献
