Microhabitat factors associated with forage and bed sites of Indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) were examined and compared in Hainan Island from 2001 to 2002. Habitat characteristics at forage and bed sites were measured by tracking five radio-collared adult muntjacs (three females, two males) and locating from fresh sign or muntjac flushed during transect surveys. Among six available habitat types, Indian muntjac preferred shrub grassland and thorny shrubland, and used dry savanna in proportion to its availability. Muntjac avoided woods, cultivated grassplot and deciduous monsoon forests. Comparing forage sites with bed sites, food availability was greater at forage sites. For bed sites, taller trees with larger canopies, taller shrubs, denser shrub canopy covers and concealment covers were essential factors. No seasonal difference (wet season vs. dry season) was found in food abundance at either forage sites or at bed sites. During the wet season, canopy closure for both types of sites was higher and at bed sites concealment cover was higher than during the dry season. Principal component analysis indicated that tree height, d.b.h. and maximum canopy diameters were important factors in habitat selection. The different microhabitat characteristics at forage and bed sites can be a clue to understanding the survival strategy of Indian muntjac, a small-bodied ungulate, in savanna woodlands.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare canopy herbivore diversity and resultant insect damage to vegetation in two distinct and adjacent ecosystems, specifically a dry forest ecosystem and a cerrado (savanna) ecosystem that occur together in an abrupt transition zone in southeastern Brazil. In the dry forest, the canopy was reached using a single rope climbing technique, whereas the shorter canopy of the cerrado was assessed using a 7 m ladder. Insect specimens were collected by beating the foliage, and 20 representative leaves were collected to calculate the specific leaf mass (SLM) and leaf area loss through herbivory. Also, we collected ten soil samples from each habitat to determine soil nutrient content. We sampled 118 herbivorous insects from ten families, mostly in dry forest trees (96 individuals belonging to 31 species). A higher abundance of chewing and sap-sucking insects were observed in dry forest trees than in cerrado trees. The same pattern was observed for the richness of chewers, with a higher degree of diversity of chewers found in dry forest trees than in cerrado trees. Herbivorous insects were not affected by SLM regardless of guild and habitat. However, we observed a negative correlation between the herbivory rate and the specific leaf mass (SLM). The cerrado trees showed a higher SLM and lower herbivory rates than trees occurring in the dry forest. These results suggest that herbivory rates in the transition dry forest–cerrado may be driven by soil nutrient content, which is thought to influence leaf sclerophylly.

The canopy is host to a large percentage of the flora and fauna in tropical wet forests and is distinct from the forest floor in plant richness, soil type and microclimate. In this study, we examined the influence of tree species and season on soil nutrient cycling processes in canopy soils of four tree species common to Costa Rican wet forests. We also compared the canopy soils to the associated forest floor mineral soils. Both tree species and season had strong effects on canopy soil nutrients and processes. Canopy soils from trees with high litter lignin concentrations had higher net N-mineralization rates and higher dissolved inorganic N concentrations than those with low lignin concentrations. During the dry season, net N-immobilization occurred and dissolved organic and inorganic N and available P concentrations were significantly higher than during the wet season. Overall, canopy soils had higher N levels and higher fungi + bacteria richness than forest floor mineral soils. The differences in canopy soil properties observed among tree species indicates that these species have distinct N cycles that reflect differences in both soil origin and biological controls.  相似文献

Question: Disturbance effects on dry forest epiphytes are poorly known. How are epiphytic assemblages affected by different degrees of human disturbance, and what are the driving forces? Location: An inter‐Andean dry forest landscape at 2300 m elevation in northern Ecuador. Methods: We sampled epiphytic bryophytes and vascular plants on 100 trees of Acacia macracantha in five habitats: closed‐canopy mixed and pure acacia forest (old secondary), forest edge, young semi‐closed secondary woodland, and isolated trees in grassland. Results: Total species richness in forest edge habitats and on isolated trees was significantly lower than in closed forest types. Species density of vascular epiphytes (species per tree) did not differ significantly between habitat types. Species density of bryophytes, in contrast, was significantly lower in edge habitat and on isolated trees than in closed forest. Forest edge showed greater impoverishment than semi‐closed woodland and similar floristic affinity to isolated trees and to closed forest types. Assemblages were significantly nested; habitat types with major disturbance held only subsets of the closed forest assemblages, indicating a gradual reduction in niche availability. Distance to forest had no effect on species density of epiphytes on isolated trees, but species density was closely correlated with crown closure, a measure of canopy integrity. Main conclusions: Microclimatic changes but not dispersal constraints were key determinants of epiphyte assemblages following disturbance. Epiphytic cryptogams are sensitive indicators of microclimate and human disturbance in montane dry forests. The substantial impoverishment of edge habitat underlines the need for fragmentation studies on epiphytes elsewhere in the Tropics.  相似文献

A field study was designed to examine the effect of desert shrubs on the dynamics of free-living amoebae in arid soil. Soil samples from 0- to 50-cm depths were collected at 10-cm intervals in each of the four seasons. The vertical distributions of the four main morphological types of amoebae, grouped according to their mobility, and of small flagellate populations were measured under the canopies of Hammada scoparia and Atriplex halimus, shrubs belonging to the chloride-absorbing xerohalophytes. The result obtained from the field study demonstrated that the total number of protozoa was significantly higher during the wet seasons (winter and spring) than during the dry seasons. The protozoan population was more diverse under the canopy of H. scoparia during the wet seasons, reaching 8,000 individuals per 1 g of dry soil, whereas during the dry seasons, the populations were higher under the canopy of A. halimus, with a mean of 250 individuals. The protozoan population in the deeper layers (40 to 50 cm) was found to be as active as that in the upper layers, demonstrating that, in the desert, soil columns below 20 cm are fertile and worth studying. The type 1 amoebae (e.g., Acanthamoeba and Filamoeba spp.) were the most abundant throughout the study period, and their numbers were significantly higher than those of the other amoeba types.  相似文献

Significant differences ( P <0.05) were found in growth of plant height, canopy cover and stem diameter of Acacia xanthophloea trees in fenced plot as compared with unfenced plot both in the wet and in the dry seasons. Finding of this study showed that although heavy browsing reduced the height and canopy of trees, it did not kill any trees and seedling regeneration took place simultaneously. Despite the presence of large herbivores that impact some considerable browsing pressure results indicate that the A. xanthophloea habitat type would continue to remain in balance in the presence of recruitment of seedlings and saplings. The conditions at the time of study indicate that the browsing on A. xanthophloea was not significant and was not serious enough to warrant management intervention at present.

Tree hollows provide critical habitat for many species worldwide. The conservation of hollow-bearing trees presents a particular challenge for forest managers, partly due to difficulties in predicting their occurrence across a landscape. We trialled a novel approach for assessing relative hollow availability, by remotely estimating mature crown cover and senescence from aerial photographs in Tasmania, Australia. These estimates were tested against plot-based field assessments of actual occurrence of hollow-bearing trees. In dry forest we conducted ground-based surveys of hollows for all mature trees (>50 cm dbh) in 37 half-hectare plots. In wet forest, we conducted helicopter-based surveys of hollows for all mature trees in 45 oldgrowth plots (0.29–4.63 ha). Aerial photographs (1:10,000–1:25,000) were used to classify the senescence and cover of mature crowns in each plot. Regression analysis showed that, in dry forest, hollow-bearing tree densities were strongly related to the remote assessment of mature crown cover, with an 8% increase in variability explained if senescence was also included (R 2 = 0.50). In wet forest, mature crown cover alone was the best model (R 2 = 0.53 when outliers were removed). Assessing senescence was less important in dense wet forests than dry forest because trees take longer to form mature-shaped crowns and so mature-shaped crowns are more likely to have hollows. These results suggest that, with skilled photo-interpretation, aerial photographs can be useful for remotely assessing the relative density of hollow-bearing trees. This approach has the potential to greatly improve conservation planning for hollows and hollow-dependent fauna.  相似文献

Abstract. Savanna trees have a multitude of positive and negative effects on understorey grass production, but little is known about how these effects interact. We report on a fertilization and shading experiment carried out in a Tanzanian tropical dry savanna around Acacia tortilis trees. In two years of study there was no difference in grass production under tree canopies or in open grassland. Fertilization, however, indicate that trees do affect the nutrient limitation of the grass layer with an N‐limited system in open grassland to a P‐limited system under the trees. The N:P ratios of grass gave a reliable indication of the nature of nutrient limitation, but only when assessed at the end of the wet season. Mid‐wet season nutrient concentrations of grasses were higher under than outside the tree canopy, suggesting that factors other than nutrients limit grass production. A shading experiment indicated that light may be such a limiting factor during the wet season when water and nutrients are sufficiently available. However, in the dry season when water is scarce, the effect of shade on plant production became positive. We conclude that whether trees increase or decrease production of the herbaceous layer depends on how positive effects (increased soil fertility) and negative effects (shade and soil water availability) interact and that these interactions may significantly change between wet and dry seasons.  相似文献

Here we develop and test a method to scale sap velocity measurements from individual trees to canopy transpiration (E(c)) in a low-productivity, old-growth rainforest dominated by the conifer Dacrydium cupressinum. Further, E(c) as a component of the ecosystem water balance is quantified in relation to forest floor evaporation rates and measurements of ecosystem evaporation using eddy covariance (E(eco)) in conditions when the canopy was dry and partly wet. Thermal dissipation probes were used to measure sap velocity of individual trees, and scaled to transpiration at the canopy level by dividing trees into classes based on sapwood density and canopy position (sheltered or exposed). When compared with ecosystem eddy covariance measurements, E(c) accounted for 51% of E(eco) on dry days, and 22% of E(eco) on wet days. Low transpiration rates, and significant contributions to E(eco) from wet canopy evaporation and understorey transpiration (35%) and forest floor evaporation (25%), were attributable to the unique characteristics of the forest: in particular, high rainfall, low leaf area index, low stomatal conductance and low productivity associated with severe nutrient limitation.  相似文献

The tree–grass interactions of African savannas are mainly determined by varying rainfall patterns and soil fertility. Large savanna trees are known to modify soil nutrient conditions, but whether this has an impact on the quality of herbaceous vegetation is unclear. However, if this were the case, then the removal of trees might also affect the structure and quality of the grass layer. We studied the impact of large nitrogen- and non-nitrogen fixing trees on the sub-canopy (SC) grass layer in low- and high-rainfall areas of differing soil fertility in eastern and southern Africa. We compared the structure and nutrient levels of SC grasses with those outside the canopy. Grass leaf nitrogen and phosphorus contents beneath tree canopies were elevated at all study sites and were up to 25% higher than those outside the canopy in the site of lowest rainfall and soil fertility. Grass leaf fibre and organic matter (OM) contents were slightly enhanced beneath tree canopies. At the site of highest rainfall and soil fertility, grasses beneath the canopy had significantly lower ratios of stem:leaf biomass and dead:living leaf material. Grass species composition differed significantly, with the highly nutritious Panicum spp. being most abundant underneath tree crowns. In the two drier study sites, soil nitrogen and OM contents were enhanced by 30% beneath trees. N-fixation capacity of trees did not contribute to the improved quality of grass under the canopy. We conclude that trees improve grass quality, especially in dry savannas. In otherwise nutrient-poor savanna grasslands, the greater abundance of high-quality grass species with higher contents of N and P and favourable grass structure beneath trees could attract grazing ungulates. As these benefits may be lost with tree clearance, trees should be protected in low fertility savannas and their benefits for grazing wildlife recognised in conservation strategies.  相似文献

The tree community of both canopy gaps and mature forest was surveyed in a 5 ha plot of cloud forest in the Ibitipoca Range, south-eastern Brazil, aiming at: (a) comparing the tree community structure of canopy gaps with that of three strata of the mature forest, and (b) relating the tree community structure of canopy gaps with environmental and biotic variables. All saplings of canopy trees with 1–5 m of height established in 31 canopy gaps found within the plot were identified and measured. Mature forest trees with dbh 3 cm were sampled in four 40×40 quadrats laid on the four soil sites recognised in the local soil catena. All surveyed trees were identified, measured and distributed into three forest strata: understorey (<5 m of height), sub-canopy (5.1–15 m) and canopy (15.1–30 m). The following variables were obtained for each gap: mode of formation, age, soil site, slope grade, size, canopy openness and abundance of bamboos and lianas. A detrended correspondence analysis indicated that the tree community structure of gaps in all soil sites was more similar to that of the mature forest understorey, suggesting that the bank of immatures plays an important role in rebuilding the forest canopy and that gap phases may be important for understorey shade-tolerant species. There was evidence of gap-dependence for establishment for only one canopy tree species. Both canonical correspondence analysis and correlation analysis demonstrated for a number of tree species that the distribution of their saplings in canopy gaps was significantly correlated with two variables: soil site and canopy openness. The future forest structure at each gap is probably highly influenced by both the present structure of the adjacent mature forest and the gap creation event.  相似文献

We compared the functional type composition of trees ≥10 cm dbh in eight secondary forest monitoring plots with logged and unlogged mature forest plots in lowland wet forests of Northeastern Costa Rica. Five plant functional types were delimited based on diameter growth rates and canopy height of 293 tree species. Mature forests had significantly higher relative abundance of understory trees and slow-growing canopy/emergent trees, but lower relative abundance of fast-growing canopy/emergent trees than secondary forests. Fast-growing subcanopy and canopy trees reached peak densities early in succession. Density of fast-growing canopy/emergent trees increased during the first 20 yr of succession, whereas basal area continued to increase beyond 40 yr. We also assigned canopy tree species to one of three colonization groups, based on the presence of seedlings, saplings, and trees in four secondary forest plots. Among 93 species evaluated, 68 percent were classified as regenerating pioneers (both trees and regeneration present), whereas only 6 percent were classified as nonregenerating pioneers (trees only) and 26 percent as forest colonizers (regeneration only). Slow-growing trees composed 72 percent of the seedling and sapling regeneration for forest colonizers, whereas fast-growing trees composed 63 percent of the seedlings and saplings of regenerating pioneers. Tree stature and growth rates capture much of the functional variation that appears to drive successional dynamics. Results further suggest strong linkages between functional types defined based on adult height and growth rates of large trees and abundance of seedling and sapling regeneration during secondary succession.

Mature trees and forests contain structural features such as tree hollows, large coarse woody debris and large spreading crowns that provide critical habitat for a wide range of species. These features can take hundreds of years to develop and require careful management to ensure their continued availability. Managing these features requires spatial mapping layers to facilitate landscape‐scale management. This paper outlines how a map of mature forest habitat was developed for Tasmania, Australia. The map was produced using spatial data on vegetation type, mature crown density and senescence, a global layer of forest loss data derived from satellite imagery, a database on timber harvest plans and a spatial layer on the extent of fire. The relationship between mapped mature habitat availability (high, medium, low or negligible) and tree hollow availability in wet forest areas was explored, complementing a similar published study in dry forests. The number of large trees likely to have hollows significantly increased with mapped mature habitat availability, although there was considerable variation and overlap between map categories. Data from a fauna locality database and two radio‐tracking studies showed that three of the vertebrate hollow‐using species examined (Swift Parrot, Common Brushtail Possum and the Tasmanian Long‐eared Bat) and nest records of a species reliant on large tree crowns (the Wedge‐tailed Eagle) were all more likely to occur in areas of higher mapped mature habitat availability. It is concluded that this map reflects the relative availability of tree hollows, is ecologically meaningful and will be useful when managing mature forest habitat at large spatial scales, but the variable accuracy of the map at fine scales needs to be taken into account.  相似文献

Sugar beet were grown for short periods with different amounts of moisture in the soil and air. Growing plants in wet soil (23 % moisture on dry weight) compared with dry soil (15% moisture) increased growth of the shoots and roots and plant dry weights by 15% in young plants and 10% in mature plants. Growing plants in wet air containing 10.9 g m-3 of water (equivalent to a saturation deficit of 2.5 mb) compared with dry air containing 6.4 g m-3 of water (saturation deficit = 8.5 mb) increased the dry weights of both young and mature plants by 8%, mostly by increasing the sizes of their storage roots. Wet air and wet soil increased the net assimilation rates of both young and mature plants. Wet soil, but not wet air, increased leaf areas of young plants by accelerating leaf expansion, and both increased the leaf area of mature plants by slowing senescence of the older leaves. Wet soil increased the water potential of the leaves of both young and mature plants and, by doing so, increased their stomatal conductances and rates of photosynthesis. Wet air also increased stomatal conductances and rates of photosynthesis of leaves of plants of both ages, but without changing their water potentials. Stomatal conductances and photosynthetic rates were greater for young leaves than mature on the same plant and at the same water potential. It is suggested that at certain stages in the crops growth photosynthetic efficiency could be increased by applying additional water as a mist to increase the moisture content of the air around the crop.  相似文献

We examined differences in the responses of deciduous and evergreen broadleaved trees to fluvial disturbance and light environment near a river-facing forest edge in order to identify the factors limiting the distribution of deciduous trees, which are important components of warm-temperate mountainous riparian forests. Deciduous trees tended to be distributed on lower terraces of less than 2-m relative elevation from the water level, which corresponded with sites suffering from strong bank erosion due to high flood frequency. On the other hand, evergreen trees showed an opposite trend of distribution, indicating that high flood frequency associated with strong erosion-dominated soil disturbances might be a constraint for their establishment and/or survival. Furthermore, crowns of deciduous trees tended to be in the canopy layer at the forest edge, with fewer individuals observed beneath the canopy of evergreen trees, even at the forest edge. In contrast, evergreen trees were concentrated in the understory of the forest interior. These observations suggested that the light environment is the predominant factor affecting the establishment and survival of deciduous trees in warm-temperate mountainous riparian forests; however, the river-facing forest edge beneath the evergreen canopy is not a suitable habitat for deciduous trees. We concluded that erosion-dominated soil disturbance on lower terraces provides suitable habitats for deciduous trees by facilitating their reaching the canopy layer by limiting the establishment and/or survival of evergreen trees.

Abstract. The climate, soil, structure and floristics of dry forests in West Africa are summarised. Data from Ghana show that these forests have two-peak annual rainfall between 850 and 1350 mm, with 6–10 dry months (< 100 mm rain) each year; by relatively nutrient-rich soils developed over a variety of rock types; by short stature (tallest trees 10-40 m) relatively high deciduousness in the upper canopy and evergreenness in the understorey; and by a distinctive flora which changes gradually towards areas of higher rainfall but abruptly at the forest-savanna boundary. Dry forests near the forest-savanna boundary form a distinctive sub-type as a result of occasional encroachment by litter fires which have become more common in the 1980's. Evidence is presented to suggest that many parts of the forest zone in West Africa may have been subject to fires most often in the dry forest types. Past fires are likely to have had a profound influence on the composition of the present forest canopy. Fire mortality is greatest in small trees, whilst drought (without fire) kills more large trees. This thinning process allows rapid recolonisation especially by Marantaceous and Zingiberaceous forbs and by pioneer trees. Seedlings of canopy trees grow beneath these colonising plants. Recurrent fires seriously impede the recovery of burnt forest and are a principal concern for the rehabilitation of dry forests.  相似文献

Large old trees are keystone organisms that generate a highly connected network of interactions because they provide refuge and feeding sites to mammals with different habitat requirements through their under canopy structure and deadwood. In dry woodlands, these keystone trees are found within agricultural landscapes, where grazing and deadwood removal are the main subsistence activities carried out by local people. These activities can modify the structure of trees and, in turn, affect small mammal communities. Our objective was to assess how different land management types modify the structure of P. flexuosa trees, and to determine the effects of modified tree structure on the abundance and composition of small mammal communities. The study was conducted in P. flexuosa forests within a protected area and in grazing fields. We found that the trees and the vegetation structure beneath their canopies reflect the management history of areas. Trees in the protected area and in an abandoned field were structurally more similar to one another than were those in grazing fields with deadwood removal and, in turn, presented greater total abundances of small mammals. Under tree canopy, the amount of deadwood and grass cover favor the presence of species that need closed and more complex habitats. Also, protection provided by the trees was differentially perceived by species, according to their ecological requirements. We can conclude that different land management scenarios allow for the conservation of the whole rodent assemblage and that, the trees determine the presence of species, particularly of those needing more complex habitats.  相似文献
