The competition-density (C-D) effect for self-thinning Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. stands was analyzed. The relationship between biological time and physical time t followed a hyperbolic curve. The coefficients At and B included in the reciprocal equation of the C-D effect in self-thinning stands (i.e. 1/w=At+B), where w and , respectively, represent the mean stem volume and the realized stand density, were calculated at each time. With increasing , the coefficient At increased abruptly up to a maximum value, and then decreased gradually to a constant level, whereas the coefficient B decreased exponentially. The relationship between the realized stand density and the initial stand density i was confirmed to follow the equation: 1/=1/i+, where 1/ represents the asymptotic stand density at a given time. The - relationship was represented by the equation: =p(e–1), where p and are constants. The density in the self-thinning stands tended to converge to the same density level after a sufficient lapse of time, irrespective of the difference in initial stand density. The time-trajectory of the mean stem volume and asymptotic stand density on logarithmic coordinates moved gradually toward the self-thinning line with a slope of approximately –3/2, whereas the time-trajectory of the mean stem volume and full stand density moved initially along the self-thinning line with a slope of approximately –3/2, and then changed to move along the maximum yield line with a slope of –1.0. 相似文献

The competition-density (C-D) effect for given times and self-thinning over time in even-aged, natural, pure stands of Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. were analyzed with the reciprocal equation of the C-D effect in self-thinning stands, and the equation describing the time-trajectory of mean stem volume and stand density. The C-D effect and self-thinning were consistently well explained by the two equations. Differences in mean stem volume and in stand density among the stands tended to merge with increasing stand age. The self-thinning line with a slope of approximately –3/2 was reached by the higher density stand prior to the medium and lower density stands. The skewness of tree height distribution showed positive values, which means that the distribution is more or less L-shaped, and in addition the skewness decreased with increasing mean tree height, which indicates that smaller trees died as the stands grew. This trend is consistent with the asymmetric (one-sided) competition hypothesis that self-thinning is driven by competition for light. Tuber huidongense and T. liyuanum are common commercial white truffles in China that belong to the Rufum and Puberulum groups of the genus Tuber, respectively. Their mycorrhizae were successfully synthesized with two native trees—Castanea mollissima and Pinus armandii—under greenhouse conditions. The identities of the mycorrhizae were confirmed through internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analyses, and their morphological characteristics were described. All of the obtained mycorrhizae have an interlocking pseudoparenchymatous mantle, which is a typical feature of truffle mycorrhizae. The mycorrhizae of T. huidongense on the two trees have hyaline branched emanating hyphae, similar to the documented mycorrhizae of the Rufum group. The unramified, spiky, and hyaline cystidia on the mycorrhizae of T. liyuanum with both C. mollissima and P. armandii further confirmed that this characteristic is constant for the mycorrhizae of the Puberulum group. The successful mycorrhizal syntheses on the two nut-producing trees will be of economic importance in the cultivation of the two truffles. 相似文献

The self-thinning process was monitored in crowded Kandelia obovata Sheue, Liu & Yong stands over four years. The frequency distribution of tree phytomass was an L-shape, which was kept over the experimental period. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient for phytomass decreased as the time span of the comparison became longer, a result which indicates that the rank of phytomass changes as stands grow. Death of trees resulted from one-sided competition, i.e., death occurred in lower-rank trees. Surviving trees continued to grow. Whatever the current spatial distribution of the trees, death occurred randomly and the spatial distribution gradually became close to random as stands grew. The self-thinning exponent was 1.46, which can be regarded as evidence in favor of the 3/2 power law of self-thinning. Relative growth rate, RGR, decreased in proportion to decreasing relative mortality rate, RMR, with a proportionality constant of 1.57, which was not significantly different from the slope of the self-thinning exponent. This experimental result probably justifies the assumption that the ratio of RGR to RMR in the mean phytomass-density trajectory for any self-thinning population with different densities becomes constant as the growth stage progresses. 相似文献

The South American cordgrass Spartina densiflora is invading European salt marshes getting into contact with the indigenous and endangered low-marsh dominant, Spartina maritima. This work describes the evolution of the plant zonation during 7 years in a marsh of S. maritima invaded by S. densiflora. S. maritima appeared throughout the whole intertidal gradient from 1.72 to 3.33 m over Spanish Hydrographic Zero (SHZ), showing its higher
biomasses and shoot densities at low elevations. In contrast, S. densiflora only invaded upper areas (>+2.59 m SHZ) at the centre of circular tussocks of S. maritima. Above-ground biomass of S. maritima dropped drastically at maximum occupation of space by the alien, and its shoot density and above-ground biomass decreased
at S. densiflora zone during the study. The competitive potential of S. densiflora was reflected in high above- and below-ground biomass and shoot densities, accompanied by elevated wrack accumulation and
the absence of other marsh plants presented together with S. maritima from areas dominated by S. densiflora. S. densiflora altered the native vegetational zonation pattern through the invasion of the centre of S. maritima tussocks; however, the alien invasion may be limited by the presence of the autochthonous cordgrass at lower elevations.

The abnormal pistils widely occur in Japanese apricot (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc) and seriously affect the fruit production. In this study, a CCoAOMT homologue, PmCCoAOMT, was cloned in Japanese apricot and the bioinformatics software analyzed the structural characteristics. The PmCCoAOMT protein was detected to be located in the cell cytoplasm by onion transient expression experiment. Analysis of the real-time PCR data showed that PmCCoAOMT gene expressed in the prophase development of pistil and the expression level in ‘Daqiandi’ was higher than ‘Longyan.’ The expression level in ‘Longyan’ was higher than ‘Daqiandi’ in the late period development of pistil, and the expression level of perfect flower (perfect pistil) was higher than imperfect flower (pistil deformity and no pistil). Compared with the control, the over-expression of PmCCoAOMT transgenic tobacco lines showed bigger flowers, darker petals. The lignin monomer composition in transgenic tobacco lines was also measured, and the results showed that transgenic tobacco lines had a higher S (Syringyl)/G (Guaiacyl) ratio (22.3 %) than control lines (11.8 %). Also, the perfect flower buds contained more S/G ratio (92.62 %) than imperfect flower buds (83.55 %) in ‘Daqiandi.’ Our results indicated that the PmCCoAOMT gene might have function in lignin accumulation, which contributed to pistil development in Japanese apricot. 相似文献

While it has been suggested that Matsutake mycorrhizae might not be functional and that Matsutake may behave as a saprobic fungus in soil or even have some pathogenic activity on seedlings, we investigated the consequences of Matsutake inoculation on Pinus densiflora growth. Seventy-five days after inoculation, hyphae were anchored on short roots and well-developed Hartig net palmettis were observed. Compared to both control treatments—seedlings treated with distilled water and seedlings treated with autoclaved mycelium—inoculation significantly stimulated seedling total dry weight by 70.9% and 98.0%, respectively. These findings attest that some type of symbiotic relationship must be functional and favour host growth, ruling out claims of pathogenicity under the sterile conditions used here. 相似文献

Two repeated DNA sequences isolated from a partial genomic DNA library of Helianthus annuus, p HaS13 and p HaS211, were shown to represent portions of the int gene of a Ty3 /gypsy retroelement and of the RNase-Hgene of a Ty1 /copia retroelement, respectively. Southern blotting patterns obtained by hybridizing the two probes to BglII- or DraI-digested genomic DNA from different Helianthus species showed p HaS13 and p HaS211 were parts of dispersed repeats at least 8 and 7 kb in length, respectively, that were conserved in all species studied. Comparable hybridization patterns were obtained in all species with p HaS13. By contrast, the patterns obtained by hybridizing p HaS211 clearly differentiated annual species from perennials. The frequencies of p HaS13- and p HaS211-related sequences in different species were 4.3x10(4)-1.3x10(5) copies and 9.9x10(2)-8.1x10(3) copies per picogram of DNA, respectively. The frequency of p HaS13-related sequences varied widely within annual species, while no significant difference was observed among perennial species. Conversely, the frequency variation of p HaS211-related sequences was as large within annual species as within perennials. Sequences of both families were found to be dispersed along the length of all chromosomes in all species studied. However, Ty3 /gypsy-like sequences were localized preferentially at the centromeric regions, whereas Ty1/ copia-like sequences were less represented or absent around the centromeres and plentiful at the chromosome ends. These findings suggest that the two sequence families played a role in Helianthusgenome evolution and species divergence, evolved independently in the same genomic backgrounds and in annual or perennial species, and acquired different possible functions in the host genomes. 相似文献

Differences in patterns of cell death between ray parenchyma cells and ray tracheids in the conifers Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were clarified. Differentiation and cell death of ray tracheids occurred successively and both were related to the distance
from the cambium. In this respect, they resembled those of longitudinal tracheids. Thus, the cell death of short-lived ray
tracheids could be characterized as time-dependent programmed cell death. In contrast, ray parenchyma cells survived for several
years or more, and no successive cell death occurred, even within a single radial line of cells in a ray. Thus, the features
of death of the ray parenchyma cells were different from those of ray tracheids. Cell death occurred early in ray parenchyma
cells that were in contact with ray tracheids. The initiation of secondary wall thickening occurred earlier in ray parenchyma
cells that were in contact with ray tracheids in Pinus densiflora than in others. In addition, localized thickening of secondary walls occurred only in ray parenchyma cells that were in contact
with ray tracheids in Pinus rigida. Moreover, no polyphenols were evident in such cells in either species. Therefore, ray parenchyma cells that were in contact
with ray tracheids appeared not to play a role in the formation of heartwood extractives. Our observations indicate that short-lived
ray tracheids might affect the pattern of differentiation and, thus, the functions of neighboring long-lived ray parenchyma

This study investigated the seasonal change in xylem growth of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora). Wood cores were sampled at 2-week intervals from April to November in 2012 using the microcoring method. Daily increment rates of tracheid number and tree-ring width were compared with seasonal changes in daily mean temperature and photoperiod. Xylem growth started in early to late May and stopped in late October to early November. The maximum daily increment rates of tracheid number and tree-ring width were in early July. The 95 % confidence intervals of the timing of the maximum daily increment rates included the summer solstice (23 June) with the longest photoperiod, but not the warmest day (30 July). The maximum daily increment rate of xylem growth is thought to be controlled by the photoperiod rather than by temperature. The daily mean temperature exceeded 20 °C after the summer solstice, indicating that temperature is not a limiting factor for xylem growth. This study suggests that the timing of maximum daily increment rates of xylem growth of P. densiflora is controlled by the photoperiod. 相似文献

Priority effects, i.e., effects of an early cohort on the performance of a later cohort, are generally studied between, and not within, species. The paucity of intraspecific assessments does not reflect a lack of ecological importance, but the technical problem associated with differentiating between conspecific cohorts. Here, we examine priority and density-dependent effects on larval Salamandra salamandra infraimmaculata. Larvae deposited by their mother early in the season have increased risk of desiccation, as rains at the beginning of the season are less frequent and unpredictable. However, breeding later may incur a high cost through conspecific priority effects, including cannibalism and competition. In an outdoor artificial pool experiment, we established densities of 0, 1, 2, 4 or 6 newly born larvae per pool (∼30 l), and 40 days later, added a second cohort of three newly born larvae to each pool. We differentiated between cohorts using natural individual-specific markings. For the early cohort, increasing density decreased survival and size at metamorphosis, and increased time to metamorphosis. For the late cohort, survival was 100% in pools without early-cohort larvae, but ranged between 13 and 33% in the presence of early-cohort larvae. Time to metamorphosis was significantly longer in the presence of low vs high densities of early-cohort larvae. Results suggest that early-cohort larvae are mainly subjected to exploitative competition and cannibalism mediated by food limitation, and that late-cohort larvae are subjected to cannibalism and interference due to size asymmetry between cohorts. The strong priority effects suggest that Salamandra females could increase their fitness by adjusting the number of larvae they deposit in specific pools to avoid cannibalism and intraspecific competition. 相似文献

In order to understand better non-target effect and potential uses, the host specificity of two parasitoid species (Anagyrus sp. nov. nr. sinope Noyes & Menezes and Leptomastix dactylopii Howard) (both Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) for six mealybug species [Ferrisia virgata (Cockerell), Phenacoccus madeirensis Green, Phenacoccus solani Ferris, Planococcus citri (Risso),Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozzetti) and Pseudococcus viburni (Signoret)] (all Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) was studied through behavioral observations and laboratory rearing. The selected
mealybug species represent major subfamilies and tribes of Pseudococcidae. Except for F. virgata, all mealybug species induced examinations by Anagyrus sp. nov. nr. sinope and L. dactylopii. Anagyrus sp. nov. nr. sinope was specific to P. madeirensis, which was the only mealybug species selected for oviposition and suitable for complete development of the parasitoid. No
encapsulation of Anagyrus sp. nov. nr. sinope in P. madeirensis was observed. Leptomastix dactylopii accepted multiple species for oviposition, with the ranking of species preference as P. citri > P. viburni > P. longispinus > P. solani > P. madeirensis. Only P. citri, P. longispinus and P. viburni supported the development of L. dactylopii. Parasitoids developing in P. longispinus and P. viburni suffered from high encapsulation rates, while no encapsulation was observed when developing in P. citri. The results of this study suggest that Anagyrus sp. nov. nr. sinope is highly host specific. Leptomastix dactylopii, on the other hand, has a wider host range. The use of Anagyrus sp. nov. nr. sinope in a mealybug biological control program is limited to P. madeirensis and L. dactylopii to P. citri. The results presented in this study also lead us to question the accuracy of the reported host range of L. dactylopii, which include all six mealybug species tested. 相似文献

Using ectomycorrhizal root tip morphotyping (anatomical and morphological identification) and molecular analysis (internal
transcribed spacer region amplification and sequencing), we assessed diversity and composition of the ectomycorrhizal fungal
community colonizing P. densiflora seedlings (from 1 to 5 years ) in a naturally regenerating area of a mature forest, in Dongning County of Hei Longjiang Province,
China. A total of 22 ectomycorrhizal taxa were determined on the roots of 100 seedlings. The most frequent species was Cenococcum geophilum, which colonized 31.2% of the root tips and occurred in 93.8% of the all samples. It was followed by Clavulina cinerea, Thelephora sp.2, and Russula albidula. They colonized in 22.7%, 17.5%, 13.4% of the root tips and occurred in 63.4%, 42.6%, 29.3% of the samples respectively.
These results suggested that ectomycorrhizal diversity increased in P. densiflora seedlings with increasing age. 相似文献

A genetic transformation system has been developed for callus cells of Crataegus
aronia using Agrobacterium
tumefaciens. Callus culture was established from internodal stem segments incubated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with
5 mg l−1 Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and 0.5 mg l−1 6-benzyladenine (BA). In order to optimize the callus culture system with respect to callus growth and coloration, different
types and concentrations of plant growth regulators were tested. Results indicated that the best average fresh weight of red
colored callus was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 2 mg l−1 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 1.5 mg l−1 kinetin (Kin) (callus maintenance medium). Callus cells were co-cultivated with Agrobacterium harboring the binary plasmid pCAMBIA1302 carrying the mgfp5 and hygromycin phosphotransferase (hptII) genes conferring green fluorescent protein (GFP) activity and hygromycin resistance, respectively. were obtained 4 weeks after incubation of the co-cultivated explants onto maintenance medium supplemented with 50 mg l−1 hygromycin. Molecular analysis confirmed the integration of the transgenes in transformed callus. To our knowledge, this

Notocactus scopa cv. Soonjung was subjected to in planta Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation with vacuum infiltration, pin-pricking, and a combination of the two methods. The pin-pricking combined with vacuum infiltration (20-30 cmHg for 15 min) resulted in a transformation efficiency of 67-100%, and the expression of the uidA and nptII genes was detected in transformed cactus. The established in planta transformation technique generated a transgenic cactus with higher transformation efficiency, shortened selection process, and stable gene expression via asexual reproduction. All of the results showed that the in planta transformation method utilized in the current study provided an efficient and time-saving procedure for the delivery of genes into the cactus genome, and that this technique can be applied to other asexually reproducing succulent plant species. 相似文献

In this paper we investigate the relationships among intron density (number of introns per kilobase of coding sequence), gene
expression level, and strength of splicing signals in two species: Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. We report a negative correlation between intron density and gene expression levels, opposite to the effect previously observed
in human. An increase in splice site strength has been observed in long introns in D. melanogaster. We show this is also true of C. elegans. We also examine the relationship between intron density and splice site strength. There is an increase in splice site strength
as the intron structure becomes less dense. This could suggest that introns are not recognized in isolation but could function
in a cooperative manner to ensure proper splicing. This effect remains if we control for the effects of alternative splicing
on splice site strength.

The maT clade of transposons is a group of transposable elements intermediate in sequence and predicted protein structure to mariner and Tc transposons, with a distribution thus far limited to a few invertebrate species. We present evidence, based on searches of publicly available databases, that the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae has several maT-like transposons, which we have designated as CbmaT elements, dispersed throughout its genome. We also describe two additional transposon sequences that probably share their evolutionary history with the CbmaT transposons. One resembles a fold back variant of a CbmaT element, with long (380-bp) inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) that show a high degree (71%) of identity to CbmaT1. The other, which shares only the 26-bp ITR sequences with one of the CbmaT variants, is present in eight nearly identical copies, but does not have a transposase gene and may therefore be cross mobilised by a CbmaT transposase. Using PCR-based mobility assays, we show that CbmaT1 transposons are capable of excising from the C. briggsae genome. CbmaT1 excised approximately 500 times less frequently than Tcb1 in the reference strain AF16, but both CbmaT1 and Tcb1 excised at extremely high frequencies in the HK105 strain. The HK105 strain also exhibited a high frequency of spontaneous induction of unc-22 mutants, suggesting that it may be a mutator strain of C. briggsae. 相似文献
