1. The major protein synthesized and secreted by the choroid plexus from mammals, birds, reptiles and probably amphibians is similar in subunit structure to transthyretin. 2. In mammals and birds the proportion of transthyretin mRNA is much higher in choroid plexus RNA than in liver RNA. No transthyretin mRNA is found in brain outside the choroid plexus. 3. Transthyretin-like protein, such as that secreted by the choroid plexus, was not detected in amphibian serum and was present in very low levels in reptile serum. 4. It is proposed that transthyretin synthesis and secretion arose earlier in evolution in the choroid plexus than in the liver.  相似文献

Review The ecology of ticks transmitting Lyme borreliosis   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The main vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the cause of Lyme borreliosis, are ixodid ticks of the Ixodes persulcatus species complex. These ticks, which occur throughout the northern temperate zone, have very similar life cycles and ecological requirements. All are three-host ticks, with the immature stages mainly parasitizing small to medium-sized mammals and birds and the adult females parasitizing large mammals such as deer, cattle, sheep and hares. The host-seeking stages show a distinct seasonality, which is regulated by diapause mechanisms and there appear to be major differences in this respect between the Old World and New World species. Most cases of human borreliosis are transmitted in the summer by the nymphal stages, with the exception of the Eurasian species, I. persulcatus, in which the adult females are mainly responsible. The ticks acquire the spirochaetes from a wide variety of mammals and birds but large mammals do not seem to be infective, so that t icks that feed almost exclusively on large mammals, for example in some agricultural habitats, are rarely infected. The greatest tick infection prevalences occur in deciduous woodland harbouring a diverse mix of host species and the diversity of the different genospecies of B. burgdorferi s.l. is also greatest in such habitats. There is evidence that these genospecies have different host predilections but, apart from the fact that I. persulcatus does not seem to be infected by B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, they do not seem to be adapted to different tick strains or species. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

We examine the relation between population size and geographic range size for British breeding birds and mammals. As for most other assemblages studied, a strong positive interspecific correlation is found in both taxa. The relation is also recovered once the phylogenetic relatedness of species has been controlled for using an evolutionary comparative method. The slope of the relation is steeper for birds than for mammals, but this is due in large part to two species of mammals that have much higher population sizes than expected from their small geographic ranges. These outlying mammal species are the only ones in Britain to be found only on small offshore islands, and so may be exhibiting density compensation effects. With them excluded, the slope of the abundance–range size relation for mammals is not significantly different to that for birds. However, the elevation of the relation is higher for mammals than for birds, indicating that mammals are approximately 30 times more abundant than birds of equivalent geographic range size. An earlier study of these assemblages showed that, for a given body mass, bats had abundances more similar to birds than to non-volant mammals, suggesting that the difference in abundance between mammals and birds might be due to constraints of flight. Our analyses show that the abundance–range size relation for bats is not different for that from other mammals, and that the anomalously low abundance of bats for their body mass may result because they have smaller than expected geographic extents for their size. Other reasons why birds and mammals might have different elevations for the relation between population size and geographic range size are discussed, together with possible reasons for why the slopes of these relations might be similar.  相似文献

Monitoring morphogenetic processes, at high resolution over time, has been a long-standing goal of many developmental cell biologists. It is critical to image cells in their natural environment whenever possible; however, imaging many warm-blooded vertebrates, especially mammals, is problematic. At early stages of development, birds are ideal for imaging, since the avian body plan is very similar to that of mammals. We have devised a culturing technique that allows for the acquisition of high-resolution differential interference contrast and epifluorescence images of developing avian embryos in a 4-D (3-D + time) system. The resulting information, from intact embryos, is derived from an area encompassing several millimeters, at micrometer resolution for up to 30 h.  相似文献

Host-parasite relationships of Hyalomma species of the world fauna are analyzed. The majority of species infests predominately various mammals. Birds and reptiles are used as preferred hosts by several Hyalomma species, and only on certain stage: adults of H. aegyptium parasitize tortoises; immature stages of H. marginatum parasitize birds. It is hypothesized that relationships of H. aegyptium adults (subgenus Hyalomma s. str.) with reptiles are secondarily in origin. Immature stages of H. aegyptium retain the primary wide diapason of hosts, which are various small mammals, birds and reptiles. The life cycle of this species is the three-host type that is considered as a primary type in ixodid ticks. A typical scheme of relationships with their hosts in all well-examined Hyalommina species has following features: the adult stage parasitize large and medium sized mammals, immature stages parasitize small mammals, three-host life cycle. A variety of preferred hosts and types of life cycle is observed in the subgenus Euhyalomma. All species of this subgenus can be arranged into two groups. In the first group, the immature stages infest only small mammals and birds, and the adults parasitize large mammals; this type of host preferences is probably primary host-parasite relationships of Hyalomma. This group includes: H. albiparmatum, H. asiaticum, H. excavatum, H. franchinii, H. impeltatum, H. impressum, H. lusitanicum, H. marginatum, H. nitidum, H. schulzei, and H. truncatum. Hyalomma marginatum and H. schulzei are two-host species; H. excavatum is two- or three-host tick. All the remaining species (except H. albiparmatum, which life cycle is unknown) are three-host ticks. In the second group, the immature stages as well as the adult stage parasitize large mammals. This group includes: H. dromedarii, H. anatolicum, and H. scupense. These species are two- or one-host ticks.  相似文献

The heterophile antigens Galalpha1-->3Gal and N-glycolylneuraminic acid are the major obstacle to grafting mammal organs, especially from pig, to man. Lack of expression of these common xenoantigens by birds has raised interest in ostrich as a potential organ donor for xenotransplantation. Glycosphingolipids of ostrich liver and kidney were investigated for their carbohydrate determinants. Both organs were found similar in their glycolipid composition with three major species, mono-, di-, and pentaglycosylceramide. The pentaglycosylceramide was characterized as the Forssman antigen. In both organs, the ceramide portion was highly hydroxylated with prevalence of alpha-hydroxylated fatty acids, C18 phytosphingosine in kidney and C18 sphingosine in liver Forssman glycolipid. These data indicate that hydroxylation of kidney glycosphingolipids, which is found in mammals, has been maintained since the divergence of birds from other vertebrates. Characterization of a minor glycolipid as a Forssman tetraglycosylceramide built on the galabiosylceramide core indicates that the Forssman tetraglycosylceramide also exists in vivo. Its precursors, galactosyl- and galabiosylceramide, were characterized in kidney and liver. The Forssman antigen is the third heterophile antigen against which man raises natural antibodies. Its localization in the vascular endothelium and connective tissue makes ostrich an unpromising organ or cell donor for xenotransplantation to man.  相似文献

The endothermic state of mammals and birds requires high heart rates to accommodate the high rates of oxygen consumption. These high heart rates are driven by very similar conduction systems consisting of an atrioventricular node that slows the electrical impulse and a His-Purkinje system that efficiently activates the ventricular chambers. While ectothermic vertebrates have similar contraction patterns, they do not possess anatomical evidence for a conduction system. This lack amongst extant ectotherms is surprising because mammals and birds evolved independently from reptile-like ancestors. Using conserved genetic markers, we found that the conduction system design of lizard (Anolis carolinensis and A. sagrei), frog (Xenopus laevis) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) adults is strikingly similar to that of embryos of mammals (mouse Mus musculus, and man) and chicken (Gallus gallus). Thus, in ectothermic adults, the slow conducting atrioventricular canal muscle is present, no fibrous insulating plane is formed, and the spongy ventricle serves the dual purpose of conduction and contraction. Optical mapping showed base-to-apex activation of the ventricles of the ectothermic animals, similar to the activation pattern of mammalian and avian embryonic ventricles and to the His-Purkinje systems of the formed hearts. Mammalian and avian ventricles uniquely develop thick compact walls and septum and, hence, form a discrete ventricular conduction system from the embryonic spongy ventricle. Our study uncovers the evolutionary building plan of heart and indicates that the building blocks of the conduction system of adult ectothermic vertebrates and embryos of endotherms are similar.  相似文献

Comparative quantitative histology of mammalian growth plates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Variation in the growth rate of long bones is a function of the number of dividing cells in the columns of the proliferation (flat) cell zone of the growth plate, the frequency with which they divide, and the size to which they grow prior to ossification. In a previous study we found that the wide variation in bone growth rates seen among species of birds was largely associated with variation in the numbers of cells in the flat cell zone. Here we have undertaken a similar study of the growth plates of mammals and have examined variation in the morphology and cell kinetics of the tibial growth plates of a variety of species. The bone growth rates tended to he lower than those observed in birds and were particularly low in the anthropoid primates. Although quite marked variation in flat cell numbers is apparent, the results suggest that variation in cell division rate may play a relatively greater role in variation in bone growth rate among mammals than it does in birds. and that the very low hone growth rates seen in the primates are due, in part, to lower rates of cell division than in other species.  相似文献

The analysis of allometric dependence of energy expenditure on body mass among reptiles, birds and mammals has shown that standard metabolic rate of reptiles when they are warmed up to the temperature of homoiothermic animals is an order of magnitude lower than that of birds and mammals. Basal metabolism is originated as special feature historically related to the metabolism during active behavior, rather than thermal regulation. Facultative endothermy was not advantageous for large animals because of long time needed to warm up the body. The ancestors of birds and animals escaped negative consequences of van't-Hoff equation by choosing constant body temperature. Heat conductivity of reptile's covers is so great, that it cannot keep endogenous warm of resting animal at any temperature of the body. Reptile "dressed" in covers of bird or mammal would be able to keep warm under conditions of maximal aerobic muscular activity and body temperature similar to that of homoiothermic animals. The base of chemical thermoregulation in birds and mammals is a thermoregulatory muscle tonus which remains unknown. One can suppose that during evolution of birds and mammals the saltation-liked origin of endothermy "fixed" the level of metabolism typical for running reptile and transformed in into the basal metabolism. This event took place at the cell and tissue level. The absence of palaeontological evidences and intermediate forms among recent species does not allow easy understanding of homoiothermy origin.  相似文献

The generation of blood cells has been observed in the spleen and in the bone marrow of the platypus. Hemopoiesis was found to be far more active in the spleen than in the bone marrow judging by the number of proliferating hemopoietic elements within a unit area of tissue from each organ. Granulocytes, erythroblasts, and megakaryocytes, with the related immature forms for each cell line, were noted in the spleen. In contrast, there were very few examples of immature forms of these cell lines and a complete absence of mature megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. These findings suggest that the spleen is the primary hemopoietic organ in the platypus. Since the platypus is one of two species representing the most primitive existing mammals, it seems likely that the spleen may be the primary hemopoietic organ in mammalian evolution.  相似文献

The behaviour of desialylated human and chicken acid alpha1-glycoproteins is reported in chickens. Although desialylation resulted in accelerated disappearance rates from the plasma of both proteins, nevertheless the asialoproteins were eliminated much more slowly than expected on the basis of earlier observations in mammals. Analysis of tissue radioactivities, including kidney, liver, lung and spleen, failed to demonstrate any accumulation of the labeled asialoproteins in the liver, which is contrary to the situation in mammals. The main pathway for the elimination of desialylated human acid alpha1-glycoprotein in the chicken is via the kidney (tubular catabolism and/or urinary excretion). The clearance of desialylated chicken acid alpha1-glycoprotein is more complex as it involves the kidney as well as the reticuloendothelial system. These findings indicate that, unlike mammals, chickens do not possess a hepatic plasma membrane receptor for asialoglycoproteins. This raises the possibility that the presence or absence of this specific receptor may constitute a fundamental biological difference between mammals and birds.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that soluble calcium activated proteases (calpains) in brain degrade proteins associated with the cytoskeleton and vary markedly in activity across regions and as a function of development. It was suggested that the observed differences in calpain activity reflect differences in the turnover rate of structural elements. The present study extends this analysis by measuring the properties and activity of calpain in representatives of the five classes of vertebrates with particular emphasis on the mammals. No evidence for proteolysis was found in soluble fractions of fish brains at neutral pH in the presence or absence of added calcium. A substantial calcium-independent proteolytic activity was found in amphibian brains—the effects of a variety of protease inhibitors indicated that it is also a neurtral thiol (cysteine) protease. Reptilian brains exhibited both calcium-independent and calcium-dependent proteolytic activity. Virtually all proteolytic activity in birds (5 species) and mammals (9 species) measured at neutral pH was calcium-dependent. The endogenous substrates for the calcium activated proteases were very similar in several species of birds and mammals as were the effects of a variety of protease inhibitors. However, the activity of the enzyme, expressed per mg of soluble protein, was highly and negatively correlated with brain size in the mammals. The allometric expression for this relationship was similar to that found for the density of neurons in cerebral cortex as a function of absolute brain size. These results indicate that soluble proteolytic enzymes in brain are differentially expressed among classes of vertebrates and suggest that the turnover of cytoskeletal elements in birds and mammals differs in important ways from that found in fish and amphibians. The results obtained for mammals raise the possibility of a relationship between brain size and the rate at which structural elements are broken down and replaced in this vertebrate class.  相似文献

All specimens of Eumetazoa and Parazoa, ranging from mammals, birds, teleosts, sharks, lampreys, amphioxus, insects, down to sponges showed the pp60c-src associated kinase activity, indicating that c-src, which is the cellular homologue of the oncogene v-src of Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) is probably present in all multicellular animals. Protozoa and plants did not show pp60c-src kinase activity. The degree of c-src expression depends on the taxonomic rank of the Eumetazoa tested, and is organ-specific with nervous tissues displaying the highest kinase activities. In the central nervous system of mammals and birds we found a high c-src expression, and in that of the lampreys, amphioxus, and insects the lowest. Unexpectedly, total extracts of sponges showed an amount of pp60c-src kinase activity similar to that of brain cell extracts of mammals and birds. These findings suggest that pp60c-src is a phylogenetic old protein that might have evolved together with the multicellular organisation of Metazoa, and that might be of importance in proliferation and differentiation of nontransformed cells.  相似文献

1. Slices of liver from laying hens incorporated Na214CO3 and NaH232PO4 into phosvitin. Slices of liver from immature birds did not do so to any appreciable extent. The 32P was incorporated into O-phosphorylserine in the phosvitin molecule. 2. Kidney, spleen, muscle, large and small intestine, ovary and oviduct from laying birds did not incorporate Na214CO3 into phosvitin. 3. Slices of liver from laying hens carried out a net synthesis of phosphoprotein under the standard conditions of incubation. Slices from the livers of immature pullets did not do so. 4. Liver from the laying hen incorporated [2-14C]glycine, [3-14C]serine and [2-14C]glutamic acid into phosvitin. Part of the glycine was shown to be present as serine in the final product. 5. Slices of liver from immature birds treated with oestradiol synthesized phosvitin from [2-14C]glycine, but the addition of oestrogens in vitro to slices from untreated immature birds did not promote synthesis during a 3 hr. incubation period.  相似文献

Testis, epididymis and ductus deferens of the adult domestic fowl and male gonads of juvenile roosters have been studied by means of histochemical and histological methods. Testicular interstitial cells: According to enzyme-histochemical results oxidative energy production seems to be of minor importance. An extraordinarily high activity of lysosomal enzymes (acid phosphatase and esterases in the adult, esterases only in the immature) is observed. Positive reactions of 3beta-steroid-dehydrogenase and enzymes of the pentose phosphate cycle indicate steroid hormone production; the pathways of the steroid synthesis, however, are probably different in adult and immature testes. A remarkable LAP content of juvenile Leydig cells is a parameter of an increased protein metabolism. Areas of reserve cells: Focal accumulation of these cell types are observed in testis and epididymis of the immature and in the epididymis of the adult fowl. Reserve cells reveal distinct activities of LAP (prospective growth ability) and 3beta-HstDH (reserve capacity for steriod synthesis). All other enzymes studied react weakly, thus pointing to a generally low metabolic activity. Seminiferous tubules: The strong reaction of alkaline phosphatase in the peritubular cells may play a part in energy disposition for contractions. Sertoli cells of adult animals are rich in lysosomal enzymes and enzymes of the glycolytic chain but oxidoreductases react weaker than in mammalian Sertoli cells. This indicates that nutritive interactions between germ and Sertoli cells in birds are different from those in mammals: The basally orientated germ cells of birds contain strong activities of diaphorases, LDH, SDH, Cyto-Ox and seem to be metabolically rather indipendent from Sertoli cells.  相似文献

The compositional distributions of large (main-band) DNA fragments from eight birds belonging to eight different orders (including both paleognathous and neognathous species) are very broad and extremely close to each other. These findings, which are paralleled by the compositional similarity of homologous coding sequences and their codon positions, support the idea that birds are a monophyletic group. The compositional distribution of third-codon positions of genes from chicken, the only avian species for which a relatively large number of coding sequences is known, is very broad and bimodal, the minor GC-richer peak reaching 100% GC. The very high compositional heterogeneity of avian genomes is accompanied (as in the case of mammalian genomes) by a very high speciation rate compared to cold-blooded vertebrates which are characterized by genomes that are much less heterogeneous. The higher GC levels attained by avian compared to mammalian genomes might be correlated with the higher body temperature (41–43°C) of birds compared to mammals (37°C).A comparison of GC levels of coding sequences and codon positions from man and chicken revealed very close average GC levels and standard deviations. Homologous coding sequences and codon positions from man and chicken showed a surprisingly high degree of compositional similarity which was, however, higher for GC-poor than for GC-rich sequences. This indicates that GC-poor isochores of warm-blooded vertebrates reflect the composition of the isochores of the genome of the common reptilian ancestor of mammals and birds, which underwent only a small compositional change at the transition from cold- to warm-blooded vertebrates. In contrast, the GC-rich isochores of birds and mammals are the result of large compositional changes at the same evolutionary transition, where were in part different in the two classes of warm-blooded vertebrates.Correspondence to: G. Testicular tissues from Anolis lineatopus were examined histologically to determine testicular structure, germ cell morphologies, and the germ cell development strategy employed during spermatogenesis. Anoles (N = 36) were collected from southern Jamaica from October 2004 to September 2005. Testes were extracted and fixed in Trump's fixative, dehydrated, embedded in Spurr's plastic, sectioned, and stained with basic fuchsin/toluidine blue. The testes of Jamaican Anoles were composed of seminiferous tubules lined with seminiferous epithelia, similar to birds and mammals, and were spermatogenically active during every month of the year. However, spermatogenic activity fluctuated based on morphometric data for February, May and June, and September-December. Sequential increases for these months and decreases in between months in tubular diameters and epithelial heights were due to fluctuations in number of elongating spermatids and spermiation events. Cellular associations were not observed during spermatogenesis in A. lineatopus, and three or more spermatids coincided with mitotic and meiotic cells within the seminiferous epithelium. Although the germ cell generations were layered within the seminiferous epithelium, similar to birds and mammals, the actual temporal development of germ cells and bursts of sperm release more closely resembled that reported recently for other reptilian taxa. All of these reptiles were temperate species that showed considerable seasonality in terms of testis morphology and spermatogenesis. The Jamaican Gray Anole has continuous spermatogenesis yet maintains this temporal germ cell development pattern. Thus, a lack of seasonal spermatogenesis in this anole seems to have no influence on the germ cell development strategy employed during sperm development.  相似文献

Both mammals and birds can flexibly organize their behavior over time. In mammals, the mental operations generating this ability are called executive functions and are associated with the prefrontal cortex. The corresponding structure in birds is the nidopallium caudolaterale. Anatomical, neurochemical, electrophysiological and behavioral studies show these structures to be highly similar. The avian forebrain displays no lamination that corresponds to the mammalian neocortex, hence lamination does not seem to be a requirement for higher cognitive functions. Because all other aspects of the neural architecture of the mammalian and the avian prefrontal areas are extremely comparable, the freedom to create different neural architectures that generate prefrontal functions seems to be very limited.  相似文献

Inhibitory neurotransmission plays a substantial role in encoding of auditory cues relevant for sound localization in vertebrates. While the anatomical organization of the respective afferent auditory brainstem circuits shows remarkable similarities between mammals and birds, the properties of inhibitory neurotransmission in these neural circuits are strikingly different. In mammals, inhibition is predominantly glycinergic and endowed with fast kinetics. In birds, inhibition is mediated by gamma-Aminobutiric acid (GABA) and too slow to convey temporal information. A further prominent difference lies in the mechanism of inhibition in the respective systems. In auditory brainstem neurons of mammals, [Cl(-)](i) undergoes a developmental shift causing the actions of GABA and glycine to gradually change from depolarization to the 'classic' hyperpolarizing-inhibition before hearing onset. Contrary to this, in the mature avian auditory brainstem Cl(-) homeostasis mechanisms accurately adjust the Cl(-) gradient to enable depolarizing, but still very efficient, shunting inhibition. The present review considers the mechanisms underlying development of the Cl(-) homeostasis in the auditory system of mammals and birds and discusses some open issues that require closer attention in future studies.  相似文献

Allometric theory predicts that instantaneous mortality rates scale with body mass with a negative quarter power. Such a relationship would mean that the survival rate of one species is partly predictable from the survival rate of other species. We develop allometric regression models for annual adult survival of birds and mammals, using data collected from the literature. These models conform to the predictions of the allometric theory; the value of negative one-quarter for the scaling parameter is within the 95% credible interval, which is [-0.31, -0.10] for birds and [-0.35, -0.15] for mammals. The predictions are very well supported when evaluated using an independent set of data. The regression models can be used to provide objective and informative Bayesian priors for annual adult survival rates of birds and mammals or to act as a point of comparison in new studies.  相似文献
