In Madagascar, the leaf feeding Pyralid,Euclasta whalleyi Popescu-Gorj & Constantinescu, occurs onCryptostegia grandiflora R. Br. and other genera in the subfamilyPeriplocoideae of the familyAsclepiadaceae. Studies on its biology and host plant specificity have shown it is restricted to this subfamily. The Australian native,Gymnanthera nitida R. Br., also belongs to this sub-family and is host to an Australian native moth,Euclasta maceratalis Lederer. Despite the likelihood ofE. whalleyi feeding onG. nitida and competing withE. maceratalis, the moth was approved for release in Australia in October 1987. During 1988 over 22,000 larvae were released; field establishment is not yet proven.   相似文献

The herringbone leaf-mining fly, Ophiomyiacamarae Spencer, is a promising candidateagent for the biological control of the alieninvasive weed Lantana camara L. in SouthAfrica. During extensive host-specificity testsinvolving 39 test plant species from 12families, survival to adulthood was restrictedto L. camara, L. trifolia, and fourspecies of the closely-related genus Lippia (Verbenaceae) in no-choice tests. However, survival of the immature stages wassignificantly lower on L. trifolia andthe four Lippia species than on L.camara. In addition, O. camaraedisplayed very strong oviposition preferencefor L. camara during paired-choice tests. This narrow laboratory host range suggests thatO. camarae will not pose any risks tonon-target verbenaceous plants if released inSouth Africa. Permission to release O. camaraeinto South Africa was approved by the regulatoryauthorities in 2001.  相似文献

Foliage-feeding beetles of the genusAnacassis [A. phaeopoda Buzzi,A. fuscata (Klug),A. fuscata var.unicolor (Burmeister),A. cribrum (Klug) andA. dubia (Boheman)] were collected fromBaccharis spp. andBaccharidastrum spp. in South America. Specificity studies showed that they were restricted to these 2 host genera. Between 1974 and 1976 these species were introduced into Australia for the control ofBaccharis halimifolia. A. phaeopoda andA. fuscata were first released in 1976. One field colony ofA. fuscata persisted for up to 3 years but no recoveries ofA. phaeopoda were made after the 1st field generation. The other species died out in quarantine and were not released.   相似文献

Studies were conducted on the solitary egg-larval endoparasitoidPhanerotoma hendecasisella Cam. [Hymenoptera: Braconidae] to determine its biology onDiaphania indica (Saunders) [Lepidoptera: Pyralidae]. Larvae pass through 3 stages as determined by the shape and size of the mandibles. Mean developmental period from egg to adult was 26.51 days at 26.06 °C and 73.88% RH. There is no preoviposition period. The sex ratio was 1∶1.12 (male/female). Mean adult longevity was not different for ♂♂ and ♀♀.   相似文献

Seventy-one plant species, which were selected using a centrifugal phylogenetic method, were screened againstMaravalia cryptostegiae, an endemic rust of rubber-vine (Cryptostegia grandiflora) in Madagascar. All species and variants of the genusCryptostegia proved to be highly susceptible to the rust under optimum greenhouse conditions. Two other species belonging to the same subfamily Periplocoideae,Gonocrypta grevei from Madagascar andCryptolepis grayi from Australia, developed fertile sori but could still be classified as partially resistant, based on the results of a leaf clearing and staining technique. Fifteen assessment categories and 10 susceptibility ratings were designated by analysing both macro- and microsymptoms. Five resistance mechanisms were identified in the non-hosts and these are described and illustrated. Resistance reactions ranged from complete suppression of spore germination on the plant cuticle to restriction of sorus development due to the collapse of rust haustoria. The significance of host range studies are discussed in relation to the use of rust fungi as classical biological control agents of weeds, and specifically the release ofM. cryptostegiae in Australia.  相似文献

The influence of kairomones on the numerical response of the parasitoidTrioxys indicus against its hostAphis craccivora at its varying density was studied. The kairomones (applied as aqueous extract of the host) significantly enhanced the rate of parasitisation and multiplication and the area of discovery of the parasitoid and also the K-values of mortality of the host at all parasitoid densities introduced (1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 16 parasitoids) into troughs having about 200 hosts. The sex-ratio of F1 offspring decreased at lower parasitoid densities and remained more or less unchanged at higher parasitoid densities after the application of kairomones. The present findings indicate that if kairomones are applied properly, the number of hosts destroyed by a stimulated parasitoid will be about 200, twice the number reported earlier, thus fewer parasitoids will be needed to regulate an estimated population of the hosts.   相似文献

The spiny blackfly,Aleurocanthus spiniferus (Quaintance), is a citrus pest in parts of Mpumalanga, South Africa, and in Swaziland. The leaves, fruit and branches of infested trees are usually covered with sooty mould and a reduction in tree vigour and production is experienced. Classical biological control ofA. spiniferus by the parasitoid,Encarsia cf.Smithi (Silvestri) (Hym.: Aphelinidae) is reported with a significant reduction in numbers ofA. spiniferus. The parasitoid dispersed successfully from isolated trees growing in home gardens andA. spiniferus was virtually eliminated up to 0,8 km from the nearest point of release within 10 months. A mean of 72.9% parasitism was reached. In 8 months,E. cf.smithi statistically reduced theA. spiniferus in parts of a commercial orchard where it was released, reaching 82.4% parasitism.  相似文献

Following the successful introduction ofEpidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) for biological control of the cassava mealybug (CM)Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr. in southwestern Nigeria in 1981 and 1982, 11 groups of cassava fields were sampled every 2 weeks up to 1988 for impact assessment. After 1984, CM populations remained mostly below 10 per tip despite the presence of native hyperparasitoids, demonstrating the long-term success of biological control byE. lopezi in the region. Indigenous polyphagous coccinellids were found only during peak host densities, whereas the specificE. lopezi was common throughout the year. During some periods, percentage parasitism indicated delayed density dependence. Since 89% of all sampled cassava tips had no CM at all and the parasitisme is very mobile, parasitization rates were also calculated for individual infested tips (N=4,878). Parasitism increased slightly with host density on tips having between 1 and 10 CM of the 3rd and 4th instars, indicating positive density dependence. Such tips comprised 64% of all infested tips. At higher host densities, parasitism rates fell rapidly. The results are discussed in view of different theories on population regulation by biological control agents.   相似文献

The biology of the noctuid,Tyta luctuosa (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lep.: Noctuidae), a defoliator of field bindweed,Convolvulus arvensis L., was studied in southern Europe.T. luctuosa is widely distributed and feeds on both thick stands and scattered host populations growing in a diversity of habitats. It undergoes 2 and perhaps a partial 3rd generation/year in southern Europe and is active during most of the growing season ofC. arvensis. In the laboratory the total time from egg to adult averages 45.6 days. There are 5 larval instars. Adult females deposit on average over 400 eggs. The larvae being able to feed and develop on native North AmericanCalystegia spp. in the laboratory, there are some reservations about its release in North America. However, the moth has potential value as a biological control agent for field bindeed in the western USA where it would fill an almost unoccupied niche.   相似文献

Summary Plantlets were regenerated from protoplasts of in vitro shoot cultures and leaf-derived de novo shoots of the chrysanthemum Dendranthema zawadskii x D. grandiflora. Isolated protoplasts reformed cell walls and then began to divide within 24 hours of culture in streaky plate agarose lenses surrounded by liquid V-KM medium. Twenty one days after isolation, 1 mm diameter callus clumps were transferred to shoot regeneration medium. After a further 33 days leaves became visible. Elongated shoots were rooted on half strength hormone-free MS medium.Abbreviations BAP 6-benzylaminopurine - IAA 3-indoleacetic acid - MS Murashige and Skoog (1962) - NAA 1-naphthylacetic acid - Pfr Photon fluence rate - V-KM Binding and Nehls (1977)  相似文献

Tetrastichus gallerucae (Fonscolombe) was collected in southern France in 1985 and is being reared at the Division of Biological Control in Albany, Ca for use against the elm leaf beetle (ELB),Xanthogaleruca luteola (Müller) in northern California. This egg parasitoid can be reared easily by keeping the beetle eggs on a moist substrate to prevent desiccation and by inhibiting the growth of mold with air currents. A laboratory colony of ELB adults provides a constant supply of fresh eggs for the parasitoids. In 1985 and 1986 over 80,000T. gallerucae were released at 17 sites.   相似文献

Hydrellia balciunasi Bock, a native of Australia, was evaluated in quarantine in Florida, USA, for its potential as a biocontrol agent of the submersed aquatic weed,Hydrilla verticillata (L.f) Royle. Larvae are leafminers. Mean total development time at 27°C was 22.8 days. Mean duration of the egg stage was 3.0 days, larval was 11.5 days, and puparial was 8.3 days. Mean fecundity was 35.5 eggs. Mean female longevity was 19.7 days, and mean male longevity was 15.6 days. The sex ratio was 1.1∶1 (male: female). Fourteen plant species closely related to hydrilla in 4 families plus rice were tested in no-choice larval development tests and an additional 27 plant species in 16 families were tested in multi-choice tests. Larvae mined in 2 test plant species,Potamogeton pusillus L. andP. crispus L., but developed (1%) only on the introduced weedP. crispus L. Females oviposited on most test plants. Permission to release this fly in the United States was received from federal and state (Florida) officials, and it was released from quarantine on 24 May 1989.   相似文献

Allorhogas pyralophagus Marsh is a recently discovered doryctine braconid with potential for field trials against stalk borers infesting both large- and small- stemmed Graminacea. This external gregarious parasite was originally reared fromEoreuma loftini (Dyar) larvae infesting Johnson grass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.] and sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.) from the states of Sinaloa and Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The parasite is easily reared in the laboratory using a wide range of host larvae [Diatraea spp.,E. loftini, Chilo sp. andTryporyza nivelli (F)]. Hosts are placed in grass stems or paper straws for exposure to ovipositing females.A. pyralophagus has been field released and recovered from the following hosts infesting sugar cane:E. loftini andD. saccharalis (F.) in Texas.Diatraea spp. in Trinidad,D. rufescens in Bolivia andT. nivella in Sumatra, Indonesia. Two species of lace bugs,Dictyla echii (Schrank) andDictyla nassata (Puton), were tested for host specificity as potential biological control agents for Paterson's curse,Echium plantagineum L. A range of test plants from the family Boraginacea, from related families in the order Laminales and from species of economic importance in Australia which have had inadequate exposure in their countries of origin, were tested under both choice and non-choice conditions. These bugs proved to be oligophagous within the Boraginaceae and attacked a number of Australian native species. Because of this,D. echii andD. nassata are not considered sufficiently specific to release from quarantine and tests were abandoned before completion of the test plant list.

Five beetle spiroplasmas, the Colorado potato beetlespiroplasma (CPBS, strain LD-1), the Cantharis carolinusspiroplasma (CCBS, strain CC-1), the Ellychnia corrusca fireflyspiroplasma (FS, strain EC-1), the Diabrotica undecimpunctatacorn rootworm spiroplasma (CRS, strain DU-1), and the Spiroplasmafloricola fall flower spiroplasma (FFS), all associated withbeetles, were fed to beetles (Maladera matrida and Carpophilushumeralis) and mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens). CPBSand CCBS were also injected into M. matrida. Attempts to recoverspiroplasmas from regurgitates and hemolymph were conducted 1–10days after their introduction. After day 1, orally administeredspiroplasmas could not be recovered from M. matrida beetles;however, at 2–5 days, four out of five spiroplasmas wererecovered from adult C. humeralis. Injected spiroplasmas survivedin the hemolymph of M. matrida beetles for a relatively longperiod (at least 22 days). All five spiroplasmas were recoveredfrom mosquitoes 1 day post feeding, but only two (CCBS and CRS)survived for five or more days. The results show short andvariable persistence in orally challenged non-host insects, withgeneral failure to pass the gut barrier. Such evidence should beconsidered when attempting to use these microbes in biocontrolprograms.  相似文献

The virulence of 5 nuclear polyhedrosis viruses infectious for larvae of beet armyworm,Spodoptera exigua, was studied and their potential as biological control agents of this accidentally introduced pest in Dutch greenhouse crops is discussed. Three of the virus isolates were collected from deceased beet armyworm larvae found in Dutch greenhouses. Based on restriction endonuclease patterns of their DNA they appeared to be closely related toMamestra brassicae nuclear polyhedrosis virus (MbMNPV) and therefore were named MbMNPV-NL80, MbMNPV-NL82 and MbMNPV-NL83. These isolates were not related toAutographa californica MNPV (AcMNPV) or toSpodoptera exigua MNPV (SeMNPV), both originating from the USA. Comparison of the oiological activity of these 5 isolates showed that the SeMNPV was more virulent against beet armyworm than the other isolates. There was no significant difference in virulence between MbMNPV-NL80, NL82, NL83 and AcMNPV forS. exigua. The LD-50 values of the 5 isolates for 2nd instar larvae were 3, 26, 14, 17 and 18 polyhedra, respectively. Despite compensating qualities of the other MNPVs, such as a broader host range and potential production in alternate hosts or cell-lines, SeMNPV is considered to be the most suitable candidate as biological control agent of beet armyworm.   相似文献

The leaf-feeding beetleWeiseana barkeri Jacoby feeds onAcacia nilotica (L.) Willdenow ex Delile in Kenya. Host specificity tests show it is host specific toA. nilotica and approval has been given for its field release in northwest Queensland. A novel rearing and host specificity-testing technique is reported whereA. nilotica foliage stimulates oviposition into strips of corrugated cardboard.  相似文献

A survey of black scaleSaissetia oleae (Olivier) parasitoids present in southern California was conducted between September 1987 and September 1989. From 308 collections of black scale-infested citrus, olive, and oleander twigs from 19 sites in southern California, 1,610 specimens were collected. Nine primary and six secondary parasitoid species were identified. Four primary species were abundant in southern California:Metaphycus bartletti Annecke & Mynhardt,M. helvolus (Compere),Scutellista caerulea (Fonscolombe) (=S. cyanea Motschulsky), andDiversinervus elegans Silvestri. The most common secondary parasitoids wereMarietta mexicana (Howard),Cheiloneurus noxius Compere, andTetrastichus minutus (Howard). In the coastal region of southern California,M. bartletti was the most abundant parasitoid, followed in order byD. elegans, S. Caerulea, andM. helvolus. In the intermediate and interior regions,M. helvolus was most abundant.D. elegans was second most abundant in the intermediate region, but was rare in the interior region.M. bartletti was second in abundance in the interior region and third in the intermediate region.   相似文献

Summary A structural study of pollination in the dimorphic flowers ofCollomia grandiflora, a cleistogamous species, reveals significant differences in stigma behavior during pollination, stylar structure, the timing of generative cell division, and pollen tube growth rate patterns. The cleistogamous flower shows a loss of protandry and the stigma is receptive only after reflexing and closing of its lobes. In contrast, the chasmogamous stigma is receptive when reflexed and closes when pollen has been deposited on the lobes. Pollen tube penetration of the dry stigma papillae and entry into the style is similar in the two morphs. The chasmogamous style is solid and the cleistogamous style partly hollow. The matrix of secretion produced by the transmitting tract cells is mainly carbohydrate with a trace of lipids. It is fibrillar in nature and appears to be partly comprised of wall material from the transmitting tract cells. In the chasmogamous pollen, the generative cell enters the tube before division, which occurs between 30 and 60 min after pollination. This division correlates with an increased growth rate for the pollen tube. In the cleistogamous pollen, contact with the stigma triggers generative cell division inside the hydrated pollen grain before germination. The two resulting sperm cells exit the grain 15–30 min after pollination when the pollen tube is in the stigma lobes. The cleistogamous pollen tube shows only one phase of growth which occurs at a rate similar to that of the slow, first phase of the chasmogamous pollen.Abbreviations CH chasmogamous - CL cleistogamous - DAPI 4, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole  相似文献
