Summary The burrowing larvae of the brook lamprey Lampetra planeri (Bloch) were shown by discriminant analysis to inhabit stream sites having certain qualities. Although a few larvae occurred in far-from-optimal habitats, most larvae selected those with low current velocity, low water depth, a low number of particles in the 0.5–1 mm range, and with low chlorophyll content. Other factors normally positively attributed to larval lamprey distribution such as organic content, shade, and presence of algae did not improve the discriminant model. The last factor even showed a negative correlation. Stream bed stability was considered to be of great importance although it was not possible to estimate quantitatively.  相似文献

Habitat selection by fluvial lamprey larvae, Lethenteron reissneri (Petromyzontidae), was studied in a natural stream and an experimental aquarium to clarify microhabitat requirements for future conservation of natural populations. A gross collection survey of lamprey larvae in the Monbetsu River, southeastern Hokkaido, Japan, revealed a remarkable bias toward distribution in sandy-mud beds. An analysis using Jacobs' electivity index showed that the larvae selectively utilized spaces having regard to shallow water, weak current, deep sandy-mud, and fine substrate particles. A comparison of microhabitat use between small- (≤5 cm) and large-sized larvae (>5 cm) indicated that the latter utilized the space with greater ranges in both water depth and substrate particle size than the former. Both the field survey and laboratory experiments on larval selectivity of physical habitat variables clearly demonstrated that substrate particle size was the most important variable for small-sized larvae whereas both water depth and substrate depth were more important for large larvae. These findings should be applicable in directing attempts at fluvial habitat restoration for conservation of this endangered lamprey species. 1. Spatial patterns in channel morphology and substratum composition at small (1–10 metres) and large scales (1–10 kilometres) were analysed to determine the influence of habitat heterogeneity on the distribution and abundance of larval lamprey. 2. We used a nested sampling design and multiple logistic regression to evaluate spatial heterogeneity in the abundance of larval Pacific lamprey, Lampetra tridentata, and habitat in 30 sites (each composed of twelve 1‐m2 quadrat samples) distributed throughout a 55‐km section of the Middle Fork John Day River, OR, U.SA. Statistical models predicting the relative abundance of larvae both among sites (large scale) and among samples (small scale) were ranked using Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) to identify the ‘best approximating’ models from a set of a priori candidate models determined from the literature on larval lamprey habitat associations. 3. Stream habitat variables predicted patterns in larval abundance but played different roles at different spatial scales. The abundance of larvae at large scales was positively associated with water depth and open riparian canopy, whereas patchiness in larval occurrence at small scales was associated with low water velocity, channel‐unit morphology (pool habitats), and the availability of habitat suitable for burrowing. 4. Habitat variables explained variation in larval abundance at large and small scales, but locational factors, such as longitudinal position (river km) and sample location within the channel unit, explained additional variation in the logistic regression model. The results emphasise the need for spatially explicit analysis, both in examining fish habitat relationships and in developing conservation plans for declining fish populations.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal distributions of Chironomus crassicaudatus, Chironomus decorus, Glyptotendipes paripes, Cryptochironomus fulvus and Tanypodinae midge larvae and selected associated environmental variables (physico-chemical variables of water, sediment chemistry and algal composition) were studied for one year in natural Lake Monroe and man-made Konomac Lake in central Florida. Ordination analysis (CCA with variation partitioning) showed that in each lake, sediment variables were the most important environmental variables. However, the most important proportion of species variability in pooled data from both lakes was explained by lake-specific combinations of water, sediment and algal variables. Chironomid larvae were ordinated with increasing depth as follows: G. paripes, C. fulvus, C. crassicaudatus, Tanypodinae, and C. decorus. This trend was similar for both lakes individually as well as for the pooled data. As water depth increased, organic matter content and associated metals concentrations in sediment increased. Glyptotendipes paripes displayed significant, negative correlation with water depth and sediment total carbon content, while C. decorus showed a significant positive correlation with these variables; C. crassicaudatus did not show any significant correlation with either of these variables. The algal composition in the pooled data from both lakes was another important factor affecting the larval distributions. The proportion of G. paripes and C. decorus larvae increased with filamentous algal density, and C. crassicaudatus larvae with increasing Cyanobacteria. Although both study lakes were very shallow, the effect of water depth (alone or shared with environmental variables) on chironomid larval community composition was substantially higher than the seasonality (sampling month) effect.  相似文献

Abundance of lamprey larvae and physical habitat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Southern brook lamprey larvae,Ichthyomyzon gagei, were collected from four creeks in Alabama and Mississippi. Larvae abundance (number m–2) and length (mm) were measured over a range of sites to quantify some of the physical parameters involved in larval habitat selection. Particle size distribution, hydraulic conductivity, porosity and organic content were the factors analyzed. Abundance of larvae was greatest when particles smaller than 0.15 mm and 1.–2.0 mm in diameter represented at least 40% and 8% dry weight of the substrate, respectively. Abundance of larvae was lowest when the small particles represented less than 10% dry weight of the substrate. A strong inverse relationship was observed between density and length of larvae. All other parameters did not significantly affect lamprey habitat selection. Results of this study may be applicable in directing attempts at aquatic habitat restoration for lamprey in endangered streams.  相似文献

Synopsis Seasonal changes in blood, liver and muscle substrate (glucose, glycogen and lipid) concentrations and enzyme (pyruvate kinase (PyK), fructose diphosphatase (FDPase), NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), malic enzyme (ME) and the hexose monophosphate shunt dehydrogenases (HMSD)) activities were assessed in ammocoete and metamorphosing stages of a stream stock of the landlocked sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus L. In all developmental stages studied, muscle rather than liver tissue served as the main site of carbohydrate and fat storage. Blood glucose and muscle lipid exhibited a positive relationship while liver HMSD and muscle ME activity, a negative relationship, with ammocoete weight. These responses were attributed to a proliferation of red fibers and adipocytes in the ammocoete muscle as the time of metamorphosis approched. Muscle lipid stores of ammocoetes in their last year of larval life increased dramatically during the fall and winter preceding metamorphosis. Changes in tissue enzyme activity of ammocoetes in their last year of larval life indicated that the liver was the site of amino acid incorporation into fat while muscle was the site of lipogenesis from glucose. During the non-trophic period of metamorphosis, stored material was catabolized to provide energy for protein synthesis.  相似文献

We evaluated the D-vac suction machine for sampling predatory arthropods in Oklahoma winter wheat fields. The efficiency of D-vac sampling was low for adult Coccinellidae and Carabidae. Sampling efficiency was greater for coccinellid larvae. Sampling efficiency was high for adult and immature Nabidae and Chrysopidae, for Araneae, and for adult Staphylinidae. For most predators, there were significant correlations between the number of individuals in D-vac samples and the number of individuals per m2 in the field. The highest correlation was 0.82 for adult Staphylinidae. Correlations for most predators were <0.60. Significant partial correlations between D-vac sample estimates and ancillary abiotic and biotic variables occurred for most predators, indicating that D-vac sampling efficiency was affected environmental variables. Multiple regression models were constructed to relate population estimates from D-vac sampling to absolute density by adjusting estimates for influential abiotic and biotic environmental variables. Significant regression models were not achieved for adult Coccinellidae or adult Carabidae, and the coefficient of determination was low (0.18) for the model for adult Nabidae. Higher values of R2 were achieved for larval Coccinellidae, Chrysopidae adults and larvae, Nabidae nymphs, Araneae, and adult Staphylinidae. Among abiotic variables, air temperature and wind velocity most frequently entered into step-wise regression models. Among biotic variables, wheat plant growth stage and wheat tiller density frequently entered into models.  相似文献

The relationship between caddisfly assemblage structure and four selected environmental variables (substrate, water depth, flow type and amount of the coarse particulate organic matter) was investigated in a Slovenian lowland stream. Caddisflies were sampled at four stream reaches according to selected microhabitat types. All together, 168 quantitative samples were taken at 21 sampling points between October 1998 and July 1999. Of 48 collected species, 30 were included in the analysis. Significant correlation was observed between species and environmental variables. As a complement to a CCA biplot representation, species assemblages within the community were also determined using cluster analysis. Nine groups and subgroups were established. Most caddisfly species prefer coarse substrate in shallow water (5–10 cm) with chute water flow, whereas few species were found on fine substrate in deep water. A significant positive correlation was found between mean substrate size and total number of species, and between indices of species richness and diversity, whereas depth did not show any correlation with these parameters. Seven species were found mostly in marginal habitats, whereas four (Potamophylax rotundipennis, Anabolia furcata, Athripsodes bilineatus and Lithax obscurus) did not show any strong preferences for selected parameters. In addition, habitat preferences were associated with the feeding types of the caddis larvae.  相似文献

The larvae of Caenis (Caenidae) and Tricorythodes (Tricorythidae), once considered to be confamilial, have notable morphological and behavioural similarities. Univariate and multivariate (discriminant analysis) techniques were used to determine which environmental variables best characterized the larval habitats of Caenis and Tricorythodes at 40 sample sites on 29 rivers within the Interior Plains of Alberta, Canada. River width, depth and substrate type distinguished riverine habitats of the two genera. Larvae of Tricorythodes occurred in wide rivers of varying depths that possessed coarse substrates. Although larvae of Caenis occurred in a variety of habitats, they were found more frequently on stable substrates in narrow, deep rivers.  相似文献

Synopsis We observed spawning American brook lamprey, Lampetra appendix, in coldwater streams in Minnesota to assess various aspects of their spawning behavior and spawning habitat requirements. Spawning occurred during April and May, at water temperatures ranging from 8.7 to 15.5°C. Average adult lamprey length and mass differed significantly among streams, but there were no significant differences in length or mass between males and females. Overall sex ratio was 1:1, although one stream had significantly more males than females and one stream held significantly more females. Lampreys spawned in groups of 2–14 individuals, averaging 4.2 adults per nest across all streams. Nests were constructed in gravel and cobble substrate just upstream of riffles, spaced at an average density of three nests m−2. The typical nest was 16 cm in diameter in water 31 cm deep with a bottom current velocity of 14 cm s−1, and was excavated to a depth of 4 cm below the stream bottom; however, some nest characteristics varied significantly in a few streams. Nests were larger in streams with larger spawning groups, deeper water, and slower current velocities. American brook lamprey exhibited spawning behaviors and spawning habitat requirements similar to those of other species of lamprey in North America.  相似文献

The most important environmental gradients of Maine peatlands are geologic substrate and alkalinity. Other gradients are coastal-inland climate, moisture content of the peat, P and K concentrations, and shade. Abundance weighted means of pH, Ca, and moisture content of peat are given for the 48 most frequently occurring bryophyte and lichen species. A TWINSPAN differentiated twenty associations. Environments of the first four TWINSPAN dichotomies differed largely by pH and related variables, though Fe, %H2O, shade, microtopography, and degree of humification were also significant. A CCA with forward selection entered pH, P, Fe, Na, %H2O, shade, and a climate factor as the minimum number of variables which best account for the species variation. Bryophyte and lichen distributions are determined primarily by edaphic and hydrologic factors, which determine the kinds and amounts of mineral solutes in peat interstitial water. Two independent chemical gradients were identified: (1) the acidity-alkalinity gradient related to base cation concentrations, and (2) a gradient of Fe, Al, Mn, and Si related to shallowness of peat and inputs from granitic lithologies.  相似文献

The distribution of biomass of the macrophyte community in Badfish Creek was examined in three sections (A–C) totaling ten kilometers. Biomass samples were taken in a stratified-random manner, with sediment characteristics, depth, current velocity and incident light measured at each site to correlate individual biomass samples with environmental factors. Total community biomass decreased in the downstream section (C), with the biomass ofElodea canadensis decreasing abruptly below section A. The only environmental factors which were correlated with the decrease in macrophyte community biomass, especially that ofPotamogeton pectinatus, in section C was the increase in substrate heterogeneity and sand substrates which lacked surface gravel. The change in substrate was related to channelization. Considering the stream as a whole, the biomass of the dominant species,Potamogeton pectinatus, was correlated with incident light. Other species present wereCeratophyllum demersum andCladophora glomerata. Analysis of riparian vegetation type indicates that tree cover significantly reduced macrophyte biomass by incident light reduction.  相似文献

  • 1 The larval chironomid community of the sediment surface and the hyporheic inters titial was investigated in two longitudinal transects of an alpine gravel stream between September 1984 and August 1985. Eighty larval species and species groups were identified, most of which belonged to the subfamily Orthocladiinae. Of all larval individuals 51.1% inhabited the first 10cm of the bed sediments, and 93.2% occurred between the surface and 40cm depth.
  • 2 The spatial species turnover showed marked variations between horizontally adjacent sampling sites in each of the four sediment depth layers. In both transects the species composition showed a significantly lower turnover in the upper 10cm of the bed sediments than in the deeper layers.
  • 3 Spatial community stability showed an oscillating pattern between all sampling sites due to density shifts of larvae between depth layers. Temporal differences in resilience (local stability) were significantly and positively related to changes in the cumulative discharge pattern in the gravel brook, thus indicating the apparent ability of the community to recover quickly following disturbances.
  • 4 The five abundant species, Corynoneura lobata, Synorthocladius semivirens, Tvetenia calvescens, Micropsectra atrofasciata and Rheotanytarsus nigricauda, exhibited significant differences in their sediment depth distribution, with density maxima shifting between depth layers. Spatial autocorrelations suggest that these larvae form patches between neighbouring sampling sites with varying sizes and inter-patch distances in each of four sediment layers. A simulation test, in which individuals of each species were randomly permuted between microhabitats of each depth layer separately, indicated that the patches might have arisen by chance.
  • 5 To evaluate the significance of observed spatial resource overlap values amongst these five chironomid species, neutral models were developed based on 300 randomizations of each possible species pair-wise association of individuals and patches of species. The spatial organization of a larval chironomid assemblage in the stream Oberer Seebach seemed to be governed by coexistence due to random patch formation and dispersal patterns within the interstitial habitats, which reduce the probability of strong competitive interactions.

Synopsis Patterns of ecotopic variation in the population structure of two common and relatedPercina species were examined among seven central Gulf-Coast stream sites by Kendall's concordance tests, revealing four complexes of variables with significant covariation from a total of 18 population and habitat variables. The first complex comprised three interrelated habitat variables, implying that mid-stream surface current varied inversely with both instream cover and substrate heterogeneity. The second complex of five interrelated variables revealed (1) that darter abundance was better correlated with the area of instream cover than with total area, and (2) that site density [number m-2] varied inversely with site area. Along with three other variables, cover density (number per square meter of instream cover) formed a third complex, demonstrating resource complementarity between instream cover and macroinvertebrate abundance. Variables within the fourth complex all increased concomitantly with the key variable of mean darter size, including body-size diversity, biomass, relative abundance of the two darter species and mid-stream depth. Within the study region, local ecological factors largely regulate distributions, abundances and size-structures ofPercina populations, apparently even outweighing the effects of stochastic and historical factors  相似文献

Dispersal is an important early life history process that influences fish population dynamics and recruitment. We studied larval sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) dispersal by combining spatially explicit field sampling, genetic methods, and laboratory experiments to investigate how far sea lamprey larvae can disperse away from nests during their first growing season; subsequent dispersal by age 1 of sea lamprey; and the effect of density on larval dispersal. In two study streams sea lamprey larvae were observed to have moved >150 m downstream from the most likely source nest within 2–3 weeks of hatching. Conversely, randomization trials suggested that for both streams age 0 larvae were found closer to full siblings than would be expected if dispersal was not constrained by distance. Restricted dispersal was also observed for age 1 larvae in five streams, although for this age class full siblings were more commonly found to be separated by >1,000 m. Laboratory experiments indicated a significant effect of density on the movement of larval sea lamprey, with more larval movement at higher densities. Temperature also affected movement significantly, with reduced larval movements at cooler temperatures. Our findings suggest that larval sea lamprey dispersal is sufficient to minimize the likelihood of strong density-dependent effects on recruitment, even with large population sizes.  相似文献

Quantitative data on the habitat characteristics of stream crayfish have been generally lacking and competing demands on water resources has created a need to address this knowledge gap. We investigated day-time habitat relationships of stream crayfish (Paranephrops planifrons White) from 793 quadrats at 30 rivers and streams in the North Island, New Zealand to develop models of koura presence–absence and abundance. The model (stepwise GAM) included width, cover, median substrate size, edge location, velocity and depth, and correctly predicted presence–absence of crayfish (8–39 mm OCL) at 73.4% of quadrats and of young-of-the-year (YOY) ≤8 mm OCL at 83.4% of quadrats. Streams ranged from 1.6 to 11.5 m in width and the probability of finding both crayfish size classes reduced sharply as streams became wider than 6 m and as the substrate became large (i.e., boulder > 256 mm). Crayfish, particularly YOY, were most likely to be found in association with cover and at the stream edge. YOY were associated with shallow depths and fine substrates, whereas larger crayfish showed a preference for cobble substrate. Undercut banks, leaf litter, tree roots, and woody debris were strongly related to the presence–absence of crayfish. The model for crayfish abundance (log-linear Poisson GAM) explained 50% of the variation between quadrats with cover, velocity, edge location, depth, and the overall crayfish abundance at each particular stream being significant variables. Highest crayfish numbers were recorded in still or slow flowing water, with the majority occurring where velocities were below 0.4 m/s. Water depths up to 0.7 m were sampled, but highest numbers were found in depths of 0.2–0.3 m. Our presence–absence model determined variables that were significant over all streams, whereas our abundance model determined variables that were significant within streams. Use of the GAMs models enabled us to untangle the multiple factors contributing to habitat selection. Cover, velocity, and locations at the stream edge were important determinants of both presence–absence and abundance. Generally, substrate was important when comparing between streams, but not within streams, whereas depth was a significant determinant of abundance within streams, but not presence–absence between streams. A total of 300 samples was collected from February 1985 to August 1986 in a medium order Ozark Mountain stream. Physical habitat measurements of temperature, mean water column velocity, depth, and substrate character were recorded for each of the 25 monthly samples along with length and sex of all individuals of Orconectes neglectus (Faxon). Analysis of habitat utilization and suitability (or preference) was conducted using exponential polynomial models of hydraulic stress models. There appeared to be equal preference for depth over the range measured. Both substrate and velocity preference curves were bimodal with each mode designating certain crayfish size classes. Young-of-the-year were found primarily in cobbled, high velocity areas while adults were found in low velocity, macrophyte beds. Utilization curves for laminar sublayer thichness also reflected size-dependent phenomena where young-of-the-year were found in thin sublayer areas and adults were found primarily in thick sublayers. When separated by time and size, adults were found to occupy higher velocity, cobbled habitats during at least two months. This time period corresponded with the time of egg-bearing and further analysis yielded a time-dependent habitat suitability surface which accounted for this movement pattern. We suggest that the application of these suitability surfaces, which reflect habitat changes during the annual life cycle, will produce more accurate predictions of density and will allow better habitat management decisions under various regulated flow scenarios.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to characterise the ground-level larval habitats of the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus, to determine the relationships between habitat characteristics and larval abundance and to examine seasonal larval-stage variations in Córdoba city. Every two weeks for two years, 15 larval habitats (natural and artificial water bodies, including shallow wells, drains, retention ponds, canals and ditches) were visited and sampled for larval mosquitoes. Data regarding the water depth, temperature and pH, permanence, the presence of aquatic vegetation and the density of collected mosquito larvae were recorded. Data on the average air temperatures and accumulated precipitation during the 15 days prior to each sampling date were also obtained. Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae were collected throughout the study period and were generally most abundant in the summer season. Generalised linear mixed models indicated the average air temperature and presence of dicotyledonous aquatic vegetation as variables that served as important predictors of larval densities. Additionally, permanent breeding sites supported high larval densities. In Córdoba city and possibly in other highly populated cities at the same latitude with the same environmental conditions, control programs should focus on permanent larval habitats with aquatic vegetation during the early spring, when the Cx. quinquefasciatus population begins to increase.  相似文献

The utility of length and mass measurements to predict the larval metamorphosis of Pacific lamprey Entosphenus tridentatus was evaluated. During 2004–2008, larval E. tridentatus were collected from Cedar Creek (Washington, USA) in either the spring or autumn, measured for total length and total mass, reared in captivity and monitored for metamorphosis. The minimum total length, total mass and condition factor of larvae that were observed to go through metamorphosis were 102 mm, 2.0 g and 1.52, respectively. Logistic models indicated that total length and condition factor in both spring and autumn were the most significant variables for predicting metamorphosis of Pacific lamprey during the subsequent summer. Mass in the autumn also appeared important to predict whether metamorphosis occurred in the subsequent summer. Collectively, all models using specific minimums of total length, total mass or condition factor of larvae as criteria for them to metamorphose were sometimes (5 of 14 cases) able to predict the percentage of larvae that would metamorphose but rarely (1 of 12 cases) able to predict which individual larvae would metamorphose. Similar to other anadromous species of lampreys, the size and condition of larval E. tridentatus have utility for predicting metamorphic fate.  相似文献

Agroforestry systems play fundamental roles for wildlife conservation, but are prone to disturbances from management practices aiming at increasing local productivity. This work investigates the small mammal assemblages present in cacao agroforests, which differ in shade tree density. We tested the prediction that higher tree density increases shade level, analyzed how some environmental variables important for small mammals (vegetation complexity, tree basal area, and invertebrate biomass) vary across the shade level gradient, and how the assemblages respond to these variations. We also tested the effect of the environmental variables on the abundance of the three most common species: Rhipidomys mastacalis, Hylaeamys seuanezi, and Marmosa murina. We captured 651 individuals belonging to 18 species. A positive relationship was observed between an abundance of non-forest specialists and tree basal area, while species diversity within this group showed positive association with vegetation complexity. Assemblage structure (described by a matrix of species abundance per site) was not affected by our environmental variables, but R. mastacalis was more abundant in sites with lower vegetation complexity. Higher shade levels in cacao agroforest tended to occur in sites with greater tree basal area, which was not a good predictor of small mammal diversity. This suggests that environmental management to reduce shade with the purpose of increasing cacao productivity is not necessarily negative for small mammal conservation. Species diversity was favored by structurally complex systems, a possible response to greater niche diversity.  相似文献
