The effects of ad lib use of an antibacterial soap containing 1.0% trichlorocarbanilide and 0.5% trifluoromethyldichlorocarbanilide on the bacterial flora of six skin sites of 132 subjects were measured by comparison with the flora of 93 control subjects who avoided the use of topical antibacterials. Each subject was examined once. The test soap produced significant reductions in geometric mean counts of the total aerobic flora on the back, chest, forearm, calf, and foot; counts were also reduced in the axilla, but not to a significant extent. The overall reduction by the test soap on all sites was 62% (P < 0.001). Neither age nor sex influenced the effect of the soap on the flora. The antibacterial soap also reduced the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus on the skin, mostly by virtually eliminating it from areas other than the axilla. Partial inhibition of the gram-positive flora was not accompanied by an increase in gram-negative species. The latter were found principally in the axilla; Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes were the species most frequently found.  相似文献

We studied skin microbiota present in three skin sites (forearm, axilla, scalp) in men from six ethnic groups living in New York City. Methods. Samples were obtained at baseline and after four days following use of neutral soap and stopping regular hygiene products, including shampoos and deodorants. DNA was extracted using the MoBio Power Lyzer kit and 16S rRNA gene sequences determined on the IIlumina MiSeq platform, using QIIME for analysis. Results. Our analysis confirmed skin swabbing as a useful method for sampling different areas of the skin because DNA concentrations and number of sequences obtained across subject libraries were similar. We confirmed that skin location was the main factor determining the composition of bacterial communities. Alpha diversity, expressed as number of species observed, was greater in arm than on scalp or axilla in all studied groups. We observed an unexpected increase in α-diversity on arm, with similar tendency on scalp, in the South Asian group after subjects stopped using their regular shampoos and deodorants. Significant differences at phylum and genus levels were observed between subjects of the different ethnic origins at all skin sites. Conclusions. We conclude that ethnicity and particular soap and shampoo practices are secondary factors compared to the ecological zone of the human body in determining cutaneous microbiota composition.  相似文献

Through a series of replacement experiments with the bluehead wrasse, Thalassoma bifasciatum, we have identified male morphological characteristics that appear to be under phenotypic sexual selection. We were particularly interested in whether the various sources of sexual selection (male-male competition for unoccupied mating sites, defense of mating sites against small males, and female choice of males) were (1) independently associated with different phenotypic characteristics; (2) jointly affected the same characteristic in the same way; or (3) jointly affected the same characteristic in an antagonistic fashion. We replaced the resident large, brightly colored Terminal Phase (TP) males on a reef with the same number of TP males from other reefs. When transplanted, these males contest with each other to take over mating sites. The transplanted group of males were then scored for three components of fitness: (1) the quality of the site obtained through competition with other large males; (2) the male's ability to defend arriving females from small intruding males; and (3) changes in female visits to the site once the new male takes over. The first and second components are part of intrasexual selection; the third represents intersexual selection. We measured the opportunity for selection by partitioning variance in mating success, and measured the direct effects of sexual selection by estimating the covariance between morphology and fitness components. Opportunities for selection: Because females generally remain faithful to particular mating sites, most (54%) of the explainable variation in male mating success is due to the acquisition of a particular mating territory, which is the outcome of competition among TP males. There was less variation in mating success due to shifts in site use by females and defense of females against the intrusions of smaller males, but all components were significant. Effects of selection: Success in male–male competition among TP males, estimated by the quality of the territory acquired, was positively associated with body length and the relative length of the pectoral fin. Success in territorial defense against small males was primarily related to body length, with lesser contributions from body depth and the area of a white band on the flank. Contribution to fitness through female choice of males was positively associated with white band area. In the two instances where a character was associated with two fitness components, the direction of selection was the same. While body length was positively associated with winning intrasexual contests, it was not correlated to any behavioral measures of aggression. Similarly, the white band associated with attractiveness was not correlated with any aspect of courtship or aggression. Parasite load was uncorrelated with other morphological characters, and did not appear to affect any aspect of sexual selection. There was no evidence for stabilizing selection or significant additional contributions from second-order effects to the fitness surfaces. Fitness functions calculated using cubic splines were generally linear except for body length, which appeared sigmoid in its effect on site acquisition ability; this same feature tended to plateau in its effect on site defense. Analyses of the interactions of selection gradients with reef or experiment indicated that the effect of particular male characters on estimates of fitness was generally homogeneous in both time and space.  相似文献

One of the major adaptations during the evolution of Homo sapiens was an increase in brain size. Here we present evidence that a significant and substantial proportion of variation in brain size may be related to changes in temperature. Based on a sample of 109 fossilized hominid skulls, we found that cranial capacities were highly correlated with paleoclimatic changes in temperature, as indexed by oxygen isotope data and sea-surface temperature. Indeed, as much as 52% of the variance in the cranial capacity of these skulls could be accounted for by temperature variation at 100 ka intervals. As an index of more short-term seasonal fluctuations in temperature, we examined the latitude of the sites from which the crania originated. More than 22% of the variance in cranial capacity of these skulls could be accounted for by variation in equatorial distance.  相似文献

We studied the haul-out patterns and movements of harbor seals ( Phoca vitulina richardsi ) on San Miguel Island, California, from 23 October through 6 December 1982 by attaching a radio transmitter to each of 18 seals and monitoring their presence ashore with continuously scanning receivers. Seals hauled out at all hours although, on average, the largest proportion of tagged seals was ashore between 1300 and 1500 h. Median durations of haul-out bouts of individual seals ranged from 4.7 to 21.8 h; 81% of all haul-out bouts were less than 12 h and 3% were longer than 24 h. Eighty-one percent of the seals that were resighted at least twice used only the sites where they were tagged; two seals used two sites and one seal used three. Most seals were hauled out on fewer than 51% of the days sampled. On average, about 41% of tagged seals hauled out each day whereas an average of about 19% was hauled out during peak afternoon hours. Using telemetry data to correct a count of 412 seals made during an aerial survey, we estimated absolute abundance at about 2,168 seals; a modified Peterson mark-recapture model produced an estimate of about 1,445 seals.  相似文献

1. Quantifying the pattern of temporal and spatial variation in demography, and identifying the factors that cause this variation, are essential steps towards understanding the structure and dynamics of any population. 2. One critical but understudied demographic rate is pre-breeding survival. We used long-term colour-ringing data to quantify temporal (among-year) and spatial (among-nest site) variation in pre-breeding survival in red-billed choughs (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) inhabiting Islay, Scotland, and identified environmental correlates of this variation. 3. Random-effects capture-mark-recapture models demonstrated substantial temporal and spatial process variance in first-year survival; survival from fledging to age 1 year varied markedly among choughs fledged in different years and fledged from different nest sites. Spatial variance exceeded temporal variance across choughs fledged from well-studied nest sites. 4. The best-supported models of temporal variation suggested that first-year survival was higher in years following high tipulid larvae abundance and when weather conditions favoured increased invertebrate productivity and/or availability to foraging choughs. These variables explained up to 80% of estimated temporal process variance. 5. The best-supported models of spatial variation suggested that first-year survival was higher in choughs fledged from nest sites that were further from exposed coasts and closer to flocking areas, and surrounded by better habitat and higher chough density. These variables explained up to 40% of estimated spatial process variance. 6. Importantly, spatio-temporal models indicated interactive effects of weather, tipulid abundance, local habitat and local chough density on first-year survival, suggesting that detrimental effects of poor weather and low tipulid abundance may be reduced in choughs fledged from nest sites surrounded by better foraging habitat and lower chough density. 7. These analyses demonstrate substantial temporal and small-scale spatial variation in pre-breeding survival, a key demographic rate, and indicate that this variation may reflect interactive effects of weather, prey abundance, habitat and geography. These patterns illustrate the value of holistic models of demographic variation, and indicate environmental factors that may limit the growth rate of Islay's protected chough population.  相似文献

Because of methodological variation in previous studies, age-associated changes in peak limb vascular conductance (VC(peak); a functional index of arterial structure) and its determinants remain poorly defined. The objectives of this study were to describe and compare age-associated changes in peak forearm and calf conductance across a broad age range and to identify physiological characteristics that are predictive of variation in limb-specific VC(peak). Peak conductance (plethysmographic flow/brachial mean arterial pressure) of the forearm (forearm VC(peak)) and calf (calf VC(peak)) after 10 min of arterial occlusion was measured twice in 68 healthy, normally active men aged 20-79 yr. Aerobic capacity (cycle peak oxygen consumption), arterial health (ankle-brachial index, pulse wave velocity), and limb-specific measures of muscle mass (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) and isometric strength (grip, plantar flexion) were also assessed. The relative decline in forearm VC(peak) with age (-6.6% per decade; P < 0.001) was greater than the decline in calf VC(peak) (-3.4% per decade; P = 0.004). Limb VC(peak) per kilogram of muscle declined with age in the forearm (-3.8% per decade; P = 0.004) but not in the calf (P = 0.35). Age, Vo(2 peak), and regional muscle mass were significant predictors of peak conductance in both limbs; however, these predictors explained considerably less variance in the calf than in the forearm. These results suggest that healthy aging is associated with a linear decline in limb vasodilator capacity in men, but the magnitude of this effect is reduced in the calf relative to the forearm. This could reflect regional differences in habitual muscle use with aging in normally active men.  相似文献

Long-term cadmium exposure may cause bone loss in distal or proximal sites in the forearm. In this study, we observed the effects of cadmium on bone mineral density in both distal and proximal sites in the forearm in two female populations. A total of 456 women living in two different areas participated. All of the participants completed a questionnaire, and the bone mineral density was measured in both the distal and proximal forearm by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Urine samples were collected for the determination of urinary cadmium (UCd). UCd levels were significantly higher in the polluted group than the control group. The bone mineral density of the proximal forearm of subjects in polluted group or with high UCd levels was significantly lower than that of subjects in the control group or with low UCd levels. However, regarding bone mineral density of the distal forearm, this trend was only found in subjects living in area A. Our data showed that cortical bone mineral density in the forearm may be more strongly affected by cadmium exposure than trabecular bone mineral density.  相似文献

Variances for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) and the relationship between mid-parental GCA and SCA effects were estimated for tree diameter (DBH) from a series of 20 sets of 6×6 half-diallel mating experiments in radiata pine, planted at ten sites across Australia. Significant SCA variance for DBH was almost equal to GCA variance for the combined analysis of all ten sites. The importance of SCA variance varied among sites, from non-significant to SCA variance accounting for all genetic variation among full-sib families. Significant SCA × site interaction was detected among the ten sites. A significant and positive correlation between mid-parental breeding values and best linear unbiased predictions of the SCA effects was observed. About a quarter of extra genetic gain is achievable through use of SCA variance if selection is based on the best breeding values. To fully exploit genetic gain from SCA variance in a deployment population, positive assortative matings are required for the best parents. It is estimated that the additional deployment gain of 46.0% for ten sites combined, or 52.9% for four sites combined that had significant GCA as well as SCA effects, were achievable relative to gain from GCA only, if all SCA variance within this breeding population was exploited. For a breeding population, selection for breeding values may be sufficient due to positive correlations between breeding values and SCA values. For a deployment population to capture more SCA genetic gain, it is preferable to make more pair-wise mating for parents with higher breeding values.Communicated by O. Savolainen  相似文献

Though surface electromyography (EMG) has been widely used in studies of occupational exposure, its precision in terms of the variance between-days and between-subjects has seldom been evaluated. This study aimed at such an evaluation. Six women performed three different work tasks: 'materials picking', 'light assembly', and 'heavy assembly', repeated on 3 different days. EMG was recorded from m. trapezius, m. infraspinatus and the forearm extensors. Normalisation was made to a maximal (MVE), and a submaximal (RVE), reference contraction. Variance components between days (within subjects) and between subjects were derived for the 10th, 50th and 90th percentiles, as well as for muscular rest parameters. For the task 'heavy assembly', the coefficient of variation between days (CV(BD)) was 8% for m. trapezius (right side, 50th percentile, MVE normalised values). Larger variabilities were found for m. infraspinatus (CV(BD) 15%), and the forearm extensors (CV(BD) 33%). Between-subjects variability (CV(BS)) was greater, 16% for m. trapezius and 57% for m. infraspinatus, 29% for the forearm extensors. RVE normalisation resulted in larger CV(BD), while reducing CV(BS). The between-days and between-subjects variability may be used to optimise sampling strategy, and to assess the bias in epidemiological studies. The bias caused by measurement procedures per se is acceptable.  相似文献

This study analyses the effect of resource availability (i.e. sheep dung) on dung beetle communities in an arid region of Central Spain, both at regional and at local scales. A total of 18 sites within 600 km2 were sampled for the regional analysis and 16 sites within the 30 km2 of an Iberian municipality were sampled for the local analysis. Spatial and environmental characteristics of sampling sites were also compiled at both scales, including measures of grazing activity (livestock density at regional scale, and two counts of rabbit and sheep dung at local scale). At a regional scale, any environmental or spatial variable can help to explain the variation in abundance. However, species richness was related to summer precipitation and composition was related to elevation. At local scale, abundance is not significantly related to any of the environmental variables, but species richness was related to the local amount of sheep dung (27% of variance). The amount of dung in a 2‐km buffer around the site accounts for 27–32% of variance in abundance and 60–65% of variance in species richness. The presence of the flock with the highest sheep density explains 53% of abundance variability and 73% of species richness variance. A cluster analysis of localities identified two main groups, one characterized by a lower abundance and species richness that can be considered a nested subsample of the species‐rich group. The mean and maximum amount of sheep dung in the sites separated by less than 2 km are the only significant explanatory variables able to discriminate both groups. These results suggest that grazing intensity (and the associated increase in the amount of trophic resources) is a key factor in determining local variation in the diversity and composition of dung beetle assemblages. However, dung beetle assemblages are not spatially independent at the analysed resolution, and the amount of dung in the surroundings seems to be more important for locally collected species than the dung effectively found in the site. Although differences in the availability and quantity of trophic resources among nearby sites could be affecting the population dynamics and dispersion of dung beetles within a locality, sites with larger populations, and greater species numbers would not be able to exercise enough influence as to bring about a complete local faunistic homogenization.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of exposure to differing light intensities for several hours during the daytime on the cutaneous vasodilatation and local forearm sweat rate induced by exercise. Seven healthy female subjects were exposed to bright light of 6000 lux (bright) or dim light of 100 lux (dim) during the daytime between 0900 hours to 1330 hours, followed by exposure to 150 lux until the test was over at 1600 hours. They spent their time in neutral conditions (29°C, 40% relative humidity) from 0900 hours to 1500 hours, and then exercised on a cycle ergometer for 30 min at 50% maximal physical work capacity. Average tympanic temparatures were significantly lower in bright than in dim from 1133 hours to 1430 hours. The onset of cutaneous vasodilatation and local forearm sweating occurred at significantly lower tympanic temperature (T ty) during exercise after bright than after dim. After exercise, the cessation of forearm sweating and the rapid change of skin blood flow occurred at significantly lower T ty after bright than after dim. It was concluded that exposure to bright light over several hours during the daytime could reduce T ty and shift the threshold T ty for cutaneous vasodilatation and forearm sweating to a lower level. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated that there are 3,713,000 cases of infectious disease associated with day care facilities each year. The objective of this study was to examine the risk reduction achieved from using different soap formulations after diaper changing using a microbial quantitative risk assessment approach. To achieve this, a probability of infection model and an exposure assessment based on micro-organism transfer were used to evaluate the efficacy of different soap formulations in reducing the probability of disease following hand contact with an enteric pathogen. Based on this model, it was determined that the probability of infection ranged from 24/100 to 91/100 for those changing diapers of babies with symptomatic shigellosis who used a control product (soap without an antibacterial ingredient), 22/100 to 91/100 for those who used an antibacterial soap (chlorohexadine 4%), and 15/100 to 90/100 for those who used a triclosan (1.5%) antibacterial soap. Those with asymptomatic shigellosis who used a non-antibacterial control soap had a risk between 49/100,000 and 53/100, those who used the 4% chlorohexadine-containing soap had a risk between 43/100,000 and 51/100, and for those who used a 1.5% triclosan soap had a risk between 21/100,000 and 43/100. The adequate washing of hands after diapering reduces risk and can be further reduced by a factor of 20% by the use of an antibacterial soap. Quantitative risk assessment is a valuable tool in the evaluation of household sanitizing agents and low risk outcomes.  相似文献

Reconstruction of heel and sole defects by free flaps   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
One latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap and five radial forearm flaps were used in reconstruction of weight-bearing parts of the heel and sole, the follow-up period being 7 to 38 months. Additional injuries such as forefoot amputations or amputations of the other leg were present in four patients. There was no flap loss. The latissimus dorsi flap proved to be too bulky and showed recurrent ulcerations, several reoperations were necessary, and definite healing has not occurred. The five forearm flaps gave good results, with a walking range from 2 hours to unimpeded walking. Complications included fissuring at the edges of one large flap and a local infection which was successfully treated. Cutaneous sensation returned in all but one flap, where it was reduced preoperatively due to a meningomyelocele. The results indicate that the fasciocutaneous radial forearm flap should be taken into consideration for reconstruction of weight-bearing areas of the heel and sole. Shortcomings of this flap include an unsightly donor defect and possible hair growth on the flap.  相似文献

Snails were collected from seven chalk grassland sites, in orderto assess variation in snail faunas with respect to location, vegetation, and management practices. Four of the sites weregrazed, intermittently to continuously, and three had been irregularlyburned and mown. Snails that are characteristic of the dry, open conditions of chalk grasslands made up 28% to 94% of allindividuals, and 33% to 75% of all species at the differentsites. Open-country snails tended to be relatively more commonat sites that had been consistently grazed than at sites thatwere mown or burned, although some heavily grazed sites showedlow overall snail abundance. Sites varied with respect to turfheight, the size of gaps in the turf, soil moisture, and higherplant species richness, but none of these site characteristicswere good predictors of the proportion of open-country snails.Comparisons of fresh and old shells at any given site can indicatewhether particular species have changed in relative abundanceover time. No changes were evident at two sites, Wylye Downand Galley Hill, but three of nine species changed at AstonRowant South, and four of ten species at Castle Hill. As a group,open-country snails declined relative to other snails at justone site, Castle Hill, which had been consistently grazed. Thisstudy confirms site-to-site variability in chalk grassland snailfaunas, while finding faunal composition to be generally constantthrough time within each site. Thus, mechanical cutting andburning, as well as grazing, may be able to maintain habitatfor some open-country British snail species. (Received 24 January 1994; accepted 21 April 1994)  相似文献

The present study was designed to determine forearm muscle glucose uptake and oxidation during the postabsorptive state and after an oral glucose challenge in patients with type A insulin resistance and acanthosis nigricans. Nine normal subjects and six acanthotic patients were studied after an overnight fast (12-14 h) and during 3 hours after ingestion of 75 g of glucose. Peripheral glucose metabolism was analysed by the forearm technique to estimate muscle exchange of substrate combined with indirect calorimetry in forearm. Two patients (1 and 6) with insulin resistance and acanthosis nigricans had impaired glucose tolerance. All other patients and normals revealed normal glucose tolerance during the tests. Decreased forearm muscle glucose uptake was observed in patients 1 and 6 compared to normal subjects (6.3 and 51.1 vs 127.7 +/- 10.1 mg/100 ml forearm.3 h, respectively). Decreased forearm muscle glucose oxidation was also observed in patient 1 as well as in patient 3 who showed normal glucose tolerance. Serum FFA levels were elevated in patient 1 but not in patient 3 and in the other acanthotic patients compared to the normal subjects. Serum insulin levels were significantly higher in acanthotic patients than in normals before and after glucose loading. The results of the present study revealed that two of six patients with type A insulin resistance and acanthosis nigricans who exhibited glucose intolerance also showed a decrease in peripheral muscle glucose uptake and nonoxidative glucose metabolism. Another patient (3) with normal glucose tolerance showed impaired muscle glucose oxidation but unaltered muscle glucose uptake and nonoxidative metabolism during the 3 hours of study.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

1. In freshwater fishes, inter-population variation in male phenotype is often associated with differences in predation intensity, but these effects can be difficult to disentangle from environmental influences. 2. The western rainbowfish Melanotaenia australis exhibits marked sexual dimorphism - females are plain with a slender body, while males have striking coloration and are deeper in the body. Male traits differ in expression among populations, but this has not been described or explored in the literature. 3. This paper describes a study designed to test for geographic structuring of male phenotype in M. australis and to determine whether between-population variation in male phenotype is attributable to variation in predation regime, after accounting for environment. 4. We collected data describing habitat, and the size, activity and abundance of predators at sites containing M. australis populations. We then used photography, spectrometry and geometric morphometrics to describe colour pattern, spectral reflectance and body shape in males from these populations. Finally, we used permutation-based multivariate statistics to partition variance in these traits according to environment and predation regime. 5. Downstream environments posed higher predation risk to M. australis. Furthermore, males from these sites consistently exhibited larger cheek spots and fewer coloured lateral stripes than those from upstream sites. Variation in predation regime accounted for a significant proportion of the total variance in these traits (30·9%), after controlling for the effects of environment. 6. Variation in predation regime did not explain variation in reflectance or shape. Environmental variation, however, explained a significant portion of the total variance in reflectance (74·9%), and there was a strong trend towards it explaining a portion of the total variance in body shape (34·9%). 7. We conclude that natural selection by predators may be an important determinant of the evolution of colour pattern variation in M. australis, but not of that of body shape or colour reflectance. 8. Further study of M. australis will complement existing models, which show complex relationships between predation regime, environment and phenotype. Understanding these relationships is prerequisite to predicting the evolution of phenotypic variation in natural systems.  相似文献

We compared the breeding phenology and clutch size of Choughs Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax in three Spanish areas that differed in feeding habitat, breeding environmental conditions and the distribution and availability of different nesting sites (cliffs or artefacts). The variation in the timing of laying seemed to be related to differences in climatic conditions determined by the altitude. The variation in clutch size was associated with the different use that Choughs made of the feeding areas because of the contrasting availability and distribution of their nesting sites. Within southeastern Madrid, clutch size of the Chough decreased and its variance increased at high nest densities on cliff sites, suggesting that density dependence in fecundity arises from habitat heterogeneity rather than by interference. At high densities, individuals, territories, nest sites or a combination of these may differ in quality, thus promoting differences and increasing the variance in the initial investment of reproductive effort. The syncronization of the onset of laying at increased breeding densities suggests that social influences arising from communal foraging or avoidance of predation by early warning and predator swamping may be acting also. We suggest that nest-site availability and distribution have a major influence on the social organization of Choughs through their breeding and foraging strategies.  相似文献

Offspring from half-sib and full-sib families of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria were reared in five locations along the Atlantic Coast to test for the presence of genotype-environment interaction for juvenile growth rate. Location effects upon growth rate variation were prevalent; of the genetic effects, the additive genetic by location variance was predominant with the nonadditive genetic by location component contributing to a lesser degree to the interaction variance. The additive and nonadditive variation over all environments was negligible. Genotype-environment interaction was found to be at least partially due to a change in the amount of genetic variation expressed at each location; with significant additive variation detected at Charleston and Georgetown, SC sites and significant nonadditive variation at Millsboro, DE. Genetic covariance/correlation analysis indicated that reversals in relative family performance across locations were prevalent, implying the possibility of habitat specialization among genotypes. In addition, graphical analysis produced no evidence of a ubiquitously superior genotype. These analyses suggest that genotype-environment interaction should act to constrain the evolution of juvenile growth rate in Mercenaria, preserve any heritable variation associated with this trait and may lead to the development of phenotypic plasticity for growth.  相似文献
