Soil and litter disturbances within Central Hardwood forests may facilitate exotic plant species invasion of interior forest areas. Microstegium vimineum is an annual exotic grass that has become common throughout the Southeastern United States. Three replicates of three different mineral soil and litter disturbance treatments, plus a control with no disturbance, were established on the leading edge of M. vimineum patches prior to seed fall. All patches were located in areas with similar forest canopy structure and slope in three Central Hardwood forest stands prior to seed fall. At the beginning of the following growing season, each individual M. vimineum seedling was mapped within the treatment plots. The mean number of M. vimineum individuals that established within each treatment did not differ significantly from the control. The distance at which 90% of the individuals had spread, and the overall mean distance spread were significantly farther for the litter removal treatment than the control. The farthest individual seedling from the boundary of existing patches in both the litter removal and the mineral soil disturbance and litter removal treatments were significantly farther than the control. The individuals that spread the farthest are of most concern due to the large number of viable seed that a single M. vimineum plant can produce. These results suggest that disturbance of the litter layer may increase the spread rate of M. vimineum and facilitate its invasion of new habitats, and that leaving litter layers intact may slow the spread of M. vimineum. 相似文献

Negative interactions between non-indigenous and native species has been an important research topic of invasion biology. However, interactions between two or more invasive species may be as important in understanding biological invasions, but they have rarely been studied. In this paper, we describe three field experiments that investigated interactions between two non-indigenous plant species invasive in the eastern United States, Lonicera japonica (a perennial vine) and Microstegium vimineum (an annual grass). A press removal experiment conducted within a deciduous forest understory community indicated that M. vimineum was a superior competitor to L. japonica. We tested the hypothesis that the competitive success of M. vimineum was because it overgrew, and reduced light available to, L. japonica, by conducting a separate light gradient experiment within the same community. Shade cloth that simulated the M. vimineum canopy reduced the performance of L. japonica. In a third complementary experiment, we added experimental support hosts to test the hypothesis that the competitive ability of L. japonica is limited by support hosts, onto which L. japonica climbs to access light. We found that the abundance of climbing branches increased with the number of support hosts. Results of this experiment indicate that these two invasive species compete asymmetrically for resources, particularly light. 相似文献

Plant plasticity under varying resources is one character that contributes to competitiveness and invasibility. The plasticity of plant modules of the invasive Japanese stilt grass (Microstegium vimineum) was examined under different light and nutrient levels using a balanced field and greenhouse study. Ample light and nutrients resulted in the greatest biomass accumulation in all plant modules. However, M. vimineum showed extreme plasticity, producing stolons and flowers (reproductive structures) under a wide range of environmental conditions except infertile, low light. The addition of nutrients under various shading regimes compensated for lower light levels, rendering little change in the allocation of carbon to reproductive structures. Data from the field study corroborate the greenhouse results, but also suggest plasticity in response to competition. 相似文献

We studied the influence of spatial differences in diurnal surface temperatures due to topography on an alpine grasshopper (Aeropedellus clavatus). Temperature measurements on east-and west-facing alpine dry meadow slopes on Niwot Ridge in Colorado demonstrated a significant difference in diurnal surface temperatures between the two slopes throughout the growing season. A. clavatus body temperature was found to be highly correlated with nearby shaded surface temperature, and individual grasshoppers enclosed on the two slopes had significantly higher relative growth rates on the warmer east slope. Temperature effects were manifest at the population level as well. A. clavatus was significantly more abundant on the east-facing than on the west-facing slope, despite similar vegetation in both areas. This study contributes to our understanding of the myriad of factors governing insect distribution and abundance by attempting to integrate the physiological and ecological, abiotic and biotic, influences on both individuals and populations. 相似文献

Spatial dispersal patterns of fine litter were analyzed in relation to forest structure within a temperate mixed stand, in northeastern Japan. The canopy layer was a mosaic of two types of patches, those of shade-tolerant Abies firma (estimated age being 81–146 yrs.) and early successional deciduous broad-leaved trees (about 45 yrs. of age). Litter input to the forest floor was observed for a period of three years using 38 traps set at a height of 1.2 m. The average annual total of fine litter was 6.233 (dw.) metric tons hectare-1, 85.7% of the total litterfall. Fine litter was mostly leaves from the overstory (about 64%). Litter distribution maps were drawn, using the Davis's grid method, of the total fine litter and its two main elements, namely A. firma (a 36.1% share) and deciduous broad-leaved species (36.7%). The mosaic distribution of heterogeneous patches of litter was seem to corresponded with distribution of the canopy structure. 相似文献

Vertical distribution of Pleuromamma (Copepoda: Metridinidae) across the eastern North Pacific Ocean
Vertical distributions of six species of Pleuromamma at ten stations across the eastern North Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to San Diego were determined from oblique Longhurst-Hardy Plankton Recorder tows to 650 m (350–450 m in the California Current). Vertical resolution was 20 m below 200 m and 5–10 m above. There was considerable overlap in surface layer distributions at night among all co-occurring species; daytime distributions showed less overlap. All species generally occurred deeper both day and night as distance offshore increased. The proportion of a species' population that remained at daytime depths during the night decreased with distance offshore. Warm water species penetrated into the California Current and nearshore region to a much greater extent than cool water species entered central gyre waters. 相似文献

Bolderslev Skov (113 ha) is the largest contiguous ancient forest remnant in Denmark. The forest has been preserved since
1998 as a strict non-intervention forest reserve. We studied vegetation structure, floristic gradients, and diversity of the
forest in 50 plots of 100 m2 placed according to a restricted random sampling design. Dominant tree species were Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, Tilia cordata and Quercus robur, which in most parts of the forest form a mixed canopy. Most stands appeared to be of moderate age, 55-80 years old, and
large old trees were rare. pH in association with light and thickness of the litter layer were the most important factors
in explaining floristic gradients in the forest. Soil moisture (dry to mesic) was not strongly correlated with DCA axes for
neither tree nor field layer, but had a significant effect on the distribution of a number of herb species. Forest structure
was not important in explaining species distributions. Field layer species richness showed a positive relationship with the
pH-gradient. At the scale of 1m2 plots we also found a highly significant negative relationship between field layer species richness and the plot-wise Ellenberg
indicator value for nitrogen availability. Structure of the tree layer had little effect on field layer species richness.
The mixed composition, long continuity, and presence of a high proportion of the regional species pool assigns a high conservation
value to Bolderslev Skov and makes it an important site for future studies of the dynamic properties, niche preferences, and
inter-specific competition of temperate deciduous forest species.

Mature Palaemonetes pugio, from a polluted estuary, Piles Creek (PC) are larger than those in a more pristine estuary in Tuckerton (TK). Possible causes for the differences in size-structure could be differences in environmental factors at the two creeks, differential competition at the two sites, inherent factors causing a greater growth rate in the PC population, differences in reproductive timing, or differential predation at the two sites. Lab microcosm studies were used to examine the possibility of inherent population differences or environmental conditions (including differences in salinity) causing faster growth in PC. There was no evidence that PC shrimp grew faster than TK shrimp, nor that PC conditions fostered greater growth compared to TK. Salinity adjustments in PC and TK tanks also had no effect on growth. Therefore, it appears that genetic and environmental factors did not play a significant role in greater shrimp growth in PC. In the field, data on relative abundances of Fundulus heteroclitus and P. pugio, and size-frequency distributions of P. pugio were collected from the two estuaries. Gravid females and recruits of young shrimp physically appeared at approximately the same time within both systems, eliminating earlier reproduction as a cause of the size discrepancy. There were three times as many shrimp in PC than in TK (eliminating the possibility of increased population density and competition at TK as a cause) and three times as many F. heteroclitus present in TK than in PC. Since it has already been established that the Fundulus at PC are smaller than at TK and that they are poor predators, differences in Fundulus predation would appear to be an important factor in determining the number and size-frequency of the grass shrimp. 相似文献

Background and Aims
Invasive clonal plants have two reproduction patterns, namely sexual and vegetative propagation. However, seedling recruitment of invasive clonal plants can decline as the invasion process proceeds. For example, although the invasive clonal Wedelia trilobata (Asteraceae) produces numerous seeds, few seedlings emerge under its dense population canopy in the field. In this study it is hypothesized that light limitation and the presence of a thick layer of its own litter may be the primary factors causing the failure of seedling recruitment for this invasive weed in the field.Methods
A field survey was conducted to determine the allocation of resources to sexual reproduction and seedling recruitment in W. trilobata. Seed germination was also determined in the field. Effects of light and W. trilobata leaf extracts on seed germination and seedling growth were tested in the laboratory.Key Results
Wedelia trilobata blooms profusely and produces copious viable seeds in the field. However, seedlings of W. trilobata were not detected under mother ramets and few emerged seedlings were found in the bare ground near to populations. In laboratory experiments, low light significantly inhibited seed germination. Leaf extracts also decreased seed germination and inhibited seedling growth, and significant interactions were found between low light and leaf extracts on seed germination. However, seeds were found to germinate in an invaded field after removal of the W. trilobata plant canopy.Conclusions
The results indicate that lack of light and the presence of its own litter might be two major factors responsible for the low numbers of W. trilobata seedlings found in the field. New populations will establish from seeds once the limiting factors are eliminated, and seeds can be the agents of long-distance dispersal; therefore, prevention of seed production remains an important component in controlling the spread of this invasive clonal plant. 相似文献10.
One of the characteristics of highly invaded ecosystems is that exotic species are often poor invaders of edaphically severe
sites, which become refuges for native flora. To investigate the invasive potential of Lolium multiflorum (Per.) into alkali sites in California, an ex-situ reciprocal transfer experiment was carried out using seeds from populations
of L. multiflorum taken from three sites differing in alkalinity (and inundation), including alkali sink soils (pH 8.5) and sink matrix soils
(pH 7.4) located within meters of each other, and non-sink soils (pH 5.0) located several km away. Survivorship, plant height,
leaf number and seed production were assessed. In addition, a native composite, Hemizonia pungens (Hick.), commonly found on alkali sinks was also sampled at the sink and sink matrix microsites. Lolium multiflorum plants grown from alkali sink and sink matrix seeds produced fewer leaves and seeds but were taller than plants grown from
non-alkali seeds, the latter perhaps an adaptation to frequently inundated soils. Non-alkali genotypes fared poorly in sink
soils for all traits, both in comparison to their growth on non-sink soils, and in comparison to the sink and sink edge genotypes.
This suggests the existence of L. multiflorum ecotypes adapted to inundated alkali sinks, a genotypic difference that occurs on a broad spatial scale (kilometers), but
not so obviously on the micro-site scale (meters) between sink and sink matrix populations. These data suggest that the absence
of exotic invasives from alkali sites may be temporary if they are evolving tolerance for these severe sites, and this may
threaten the future of the native alkali specialists that currently find refuge in these sites. 相似文献

The expected outcome of weed control in natural systems is that the decline of a dominant weed will result in an increase in diversity of the plant community but this has seldom been tested. Here we evaluate the response of the plant community following the decline of diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa) in six different pastures at White Lake, BC, Canada over five years. This period followed the establishment, spread and high levels of attack by the introduced European weevil, Larinus minutus, as part of a biological control program. Knapweed declined immediately before and during the study period, but, contrary to expectations, the species richness and diversity of the rangeland plant community did not increase. The absolute cover of native and introduced forbs and grasses increased following knapweed decline, but only the introduced grasses showed a consistent increase in cover relative to the other life-forms. However, unlike in other studies, the native plants dominated the study site. We conclude that the changes in plant communities following successful biological control are variable among programs and that the impact of replacement species must be evaluated in assessing the success of ecological restoration programs that use biological control to manage an undesirable weed. 相似文献

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) and Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) are major pests of sweet pepper for direct damage and tospovirus transmission. To control their infestations, Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) is produced by many commercial insectaries and widely used on IPM vegetable crops of Europe. This predator is naturally widespread along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, and not in more continental areas, where other Orius spp. are more common. Research was conducted in a continental area of Northwest Italy in 2002–2003 to assess the natural presence of anthocorids on pepper, and to compare their colonization and predatory ability with those of the species artificially introduced. Experiments were conducted in 12 sweet pepper greenhouses, in six of which O. laevigatus release was made. From late May to early October, thrips and anthocorids were sampled on pepper by collecting flowers; Orius spp. were also collected on neighboring wild flora. Independently of the releases, Orius specimens were found in all surveyed greenhouses, but O. niger Wolff, also captured on various wild plants, was the most abundant species. It naturally colonized crops from late June and proved to be the most efficient predator on sweet pepper in the surveyed area, if not disturbed by pesticide application. Contrarily, O. laevigatus was rarely found and only in the greenhouses in which it had been released. However its introduction resulted in thrips control before natural colonization by the native species occurred. 相似文献

No fumarase activity could be found in whole cells or in cell-free crude extracts from Leuconostoc mesenteroides or Lactobacillus curvatus. The degradation of l-malate-4-14C by these organisms yielded more than 95% of the label as 14CO2. It is therefore recommended that these organisms, rather than Lactobacillus plantarum, should be used in the determination of isotope distribution in l-malate-14C, since L. plantarum exhibits a significant fumarase activity and thus randomizes malate prior to the decarboxylation of this substance by the malolactic enzyme. 相似文献

We record the decline of Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL) in five rivers of the world's largest mangrove ecosystem, the Sundarbans, from 1992 to 1999. Shrimp aquaculture in the coastal belt of Bangladesh is dependent on the collection of P. monodon PL from the coastal rivers, and horizontal expansion of shrimp farming has resulted in a severe decline of this wild resource in the Sundarbans. Abundance of P. monodon PL was significantly (P<0.05) reduced in 1999 compared to the previous two-year studies (1992 and 1995) in the rivers. About 12–551 postlarvae of other shrimps, 5–152 finfish postlarvae and 26–1636 other macro-zooplankters are wasted during the collection of a single P. monodon PL. Water temperature and salinity of the river systems are correlated with P. monodon PL abundance. Besides P. monodon PL, inshore fishery of Hilsa ilisha, catfishes and Scylla serrata are also overexploited. The management practices and conservation of fishery resources of Sundarbans are reviewed in the context of its world heritage status. 相似文献

The local and chemical distribution of phlorotannins among the Japanese Laminariaceae, Eisenia bicyclis, Ecklonia cava and Ecklonia kurome, was investigated. As a result of light microscopy observations with vanillin-HCl staining, phlorotannins were found to be accumulated within the vegetative cells of the outer cortical layer of the thalli, regardless of the species, stage of growth or organ. Crude phlorotannins comprised about 3.0% of the algal powder for each of the algae. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed that the phlorotannins of E. bicyclis were composed of phloroglucinol (0.9%), phloroglucinol tetramer (4.4%), eckol (7.5%), phlorofucofuroeckol A (21.9%), dieckol (23.4%), and 8,8'-bieckol (24.6%), plus some other unknown phenolic compounds (17.3%). The composition of the phlorotannins differed little among the Laminariaceae, except for a significantly larger amount of the tetramer, MW 478, in E. bicyclis. 相似文献

The breeding system of the European tussock grass Nardus stricta L. (Poaceae) was investigated with pollination experiments. Plants were sampled from two populations at Lake Pukaki, Canterbury, New Zealand, where the species is recognised as an alien invader. Bagging of flowers with king-sized cigarette paper and hand-pollination were used to test for three modes of reproduction in the greenhouse: (1) agamospermy (apomixis), (2) autogamy and self-compatibility, and (3) allogamy (outcrossing). Two control groups without experimental treatments were further tested for seed set under (1) greenhouse and (2) field conditions. The success or failure of all experimental treatments was assessed with seed set and germination trials. All agamospermy treatments showed high seed set and germination proportions arguing for an apomictic mode of reproduction in Nardus stricta. Cross-pollination treatments were also successful making it difficult to estimate the degree of outcrossing, selfing, and agamospermous seed production in Nardus stricta. Fecundity in field populations was considerably reduced, possibly due to environmental factors acting upon seed development during maturation. The reproductive strategy of Nardus stricta might be particularly beneficial during invasion because single tussocks can form reproducing colonies and high reproductive output is ensured even in the absence of pollination. Genetic studies in combination with pollination experiments would be necessary to gain deeper insights into the breeding strategy of Nardus stricta. 相似文献

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is the predominant cool-season pasture grass in the USA. Embryogenic calluses were induced from seeds/caryopsis of elite tall fescue cultivars Jesup and Kentucky-31, and were broken up into small pieces and used for Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Agrobacterium strains LBA4404 and EHA105 harboring pCAMBIA vectors or the super-binary vector pTOK233 were used to infect the embryogenic callus pieces. The number of hygromycin resistant calluses obtained per dish of infected callus pieces was in the range of 2.0-5.8, and the number of transgenic plants recovered per dish of infected callus pieces was in the range of 0.4-1.7. When transformation efficiency was calculated based on the number of transgenic plants recovered and the number of original intact calluses used, the transformation frequency was in the range of 1.9-8.7%. The use of the easily available pCAMBIA vectors could produce equivalent results as the superbinary vector pTOK233. The transgenic nature of the regenerated plants was demonstrated by Southern hybridization analysis using undigested and digested genomic DNA samples. Expression of the transgenes was confirmed by northern hybridization analysis, GUS staining, and detection of GFP signals. Fertile transgenic plants were obtained after vernalization in the greenhouse. Progeny analysis revealed Mendelian inheritance of the transgenes. 相似文献

Concern about spread of non-native riparian trees in the western USA has led to Congressional proposals to accelerate control efforts. Debate over these proposals is frustrated by limited knowledge of non-native species distribution and abundance. We measured abundance of 44 riparian woody plants at 475 randomly selected stream gaging stations in 17 western states. Our sample indicates that Tamarix ramosissima and Elaeagnus angustifolia are already the third and fourth most frequently occurring woody riparian plants in the region. Although many species of Tamarix have been reported in the region, T. ramosissima (here including T. chinensis and hybrids) is by far the most abundant. The frequency of occurrence of T. ramosissima has a strong positive relation with the mean annual minimum temperature, which is consistent with hypothesized frost sensitivity. In contrast the frequency of occurrence of E. angustifolia decreases with increasing minimum temperatures. Based on mean normalized cover, T. ramosissima and E. angustifolia are the second and fifth most dominant woody riparian species in the western USA. The dominance of T. ramosissima has been suspected for decades; the regional ascendance of E. angustifolia, however, has not previously been reported. 相似文献

Interspecific hybridization is widespread in plants and is an important evolutionary process. Hybrids may be fitter than their parental species, at least under some environmental conditions, and this may lead to partitioning of taxa by habitat. In eastern Canada, two cattail species (Typha latifolia and Typha angustifolia) and their hybrid (Typha x glauca) are known to have become increasingly widespread in recent decades, although their habitat preferences and patterns of co-existence at the local scale are not well known. We quantified the occurrence of these three taxa in three different habitat types (high traffic, low traffic, and ‘natural’) at 40 different sites along a sampling route of approximately 2000 km in eastern Canada. There were no significant overall associations between habitat type and taxon, although intraspecific comparisons among sites showed that the hybrid was most likely to grow in high traffic (highly disturbed) sites. In addition, pairwise comparisons revealed significant independence of T. latifolia and T. angustifolia, although the hybrid was equally likely to co-exist with either of its parental species. The presence of the three taxa in several habitats, including highly disturbed roadside areas, is consistent with their increasingly invasive tendencies. 相似文献

The rare grass, Achnatherum hendersonii (Vasey) Barkworth, and the more widely distributed Poa secunda J. S. Presl grow together on shallow soils derived from basaltic rock that are subject to cryogenic disturbance. It has been proposed that the solifluction allows A. hendersonii to persist by inhibiting the competitive ability of P. secunda. A correlate of this proposal is that P. secunda will have a superior growth rate in undisturbed soils. This idea was tested by growing both species in potting soil, both singly and in combination. Under these conditions, P. secunda grew faster and attained a larger above-ground size than A. hendersonii. Thus, one factor allowing the survival of the rare A. hendersonii seems to be its occurrence on sites where the competitive ability of a wide-ranging species is restricted. The survival of A. hendersonii on disturbed sites may also be partly explained by its roots that are apparently adapted to growing where solifluction occurs. 相似文献
