Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) under ultraviolet (UV) light produces a strong oxidative effect and may therefore be used as a photocatalytic disinfectant. Although many studies on the photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria have been reported, few studies have addressed virus inactivation. In the present study, we demonstrated the inactivation of influenza virus through TiO(2) photocatalysis using TiO(2) nanoparticles immobilized on a glass plate. The influences of the UV intensity, UV irradiation time and bovine serum albumin (BSA) concentration in the viral suspensions on the inactivation kinetics were investigated. Additionally, we also determined whether the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) methodology for the evaluation of antibacterial activity of TiO(2) photocatalysis could be applied to the evaluation of antiviral activity. The viral titers were dramatically reduced by the photocatalytic reaction. Even with a low intensity of UV-A (0.01 mW cm(-2)), a viral reduction of approximately 4-log(10) was observed within a short irradiation time. The viral inactivation kinetics were associated with the exposure time, the UV intensity and the BSA concentration in virus suspensions. These results show that TiO(2) photocatalysis could be used to inactivate the influenza virus. Furthermore, a minor modification of the ISO test method for anti-bacterial effects of TiO(2) photocatalysis could be useful for the evaluation of antiviral activity.

In the present research, the antimicrobial effects of nanosized silver (Ag) doped TiO(2) colloidal solutions prepared using a sol-gel technique were investigated. In order to determine the solution characteristics, the turbidity, viscosity and pH of the colloidal solutions were measured. Differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry equipment was used to determine the chemical structures and reaction types of the films formed from these solutions. The morphology of Ag doped TiO(2) nanoparticles was evaluated by atomic force microscopy. The disc diffusion method was employed to explore antimicrobial activity, and the Broth Microdilution method was used to obtain MIC values of nanosized Ag doped TiO(2) colloidal solutions against the test microorganisms Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhimurium. It was found that the silver doped TiO(2) nanoparticles inhibited the growth and multiplication of the test microorganisms, including the fungus C. albicans. Antimicrobial activity was observed against all tested microorganisms at a very low concentration of 1.125-2.81 μg/ml of nano silver in 1-25 % Ag-TiO(2) solutions.

Multifinishing treatment of cotton fabrics was carried out using core-shell nanoparticles that consists of silver nanoparticles (Ag(0)) as core and chitosan-O-methoxy polyethylene glycol (CTS-O-MPEG) as shell. The synthesized (Ag(0)-CTS-O-MPEG) core-shell nanoparticle was applied to cotton fabrics using the conventional pad-dry-cure method. The finished fabrics were examined for their morphological features and surface characteristics by making use of scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX), which reveals the well dispersion of (Ag(0)-CTS-O-MPEG) core-shell nanoparticles on cotton fabrics. Factors affecting the treatment such as core shell nanoparticles, citric acid (CA) concentration as well as curing temperature were studied. The treated fabrics, at optimum condition of 1% core shell nanoparticles, 5% citric acid, drying at 80°C, curing at 160°C for 2 min, showed excellent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), even after 20 washing cycles in addition to an enhancement in crease recovery angles (CRA) along with a slight improvement in tensile strength (TS).

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was used to evaluate antibacterial activity by titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) photocatalysis since 2006. We evaluated photocatalytic inactivation of Qβ and T4 bacteriophages induced by low-intensity, long-wavelength ultraviolet A (UVA; 0.1 mW cm(-2) and 0.001 mW cm(-2)) irradiation on a TiO(2)-coated glass plate using the ISO methodology. The results indicated that both bacteriophages were inactivated at 0.001 mW cm(-2) UVA. The intensity of UV light, including long-wavelength light (UVA), is very low in an actual indoor environment. Thus, TiO(2) photocatalysis can be beneficial for inactivating viruses in an indoor environment. Experiments using qPCR and bovine serum albumin degradation assume that viral inactivation is caused by outer viral protein disorder and not by viral RNA reduction by reactive oxygen species produced during TiO(2) photocatalysis. Furthermore, we showed that the ISO methodology for standard testing of antibacterial activity by TiO(2) photocatalysis can be applied to assess antiviral activity.

Silver nanoparticles: partial oxidation and antibacterial activities
The physical and chemical properties of silver nanoparticles that are responsible for their antimicrobial activities have been studied with spherical silver nanoparticles (average diameter approximately 9 nm) synthesized by the borohydride reduction of Ag+ ions, in relation to their sensitivity to oxidation, activities towards silver-resistant bacteria, size-dependent activities, and dispersal in electrolytic solutions. Partially (surface) oxidized silver nanoparticles have antibacterial activities, but zero-valent nanoparticles do not. The levels of chemisorbed Ag+ that form on the particle's surface, as revealed by changes in the surface plasmon resonance absorption during oxidation and reduction, correlate well with the observed antibacterial activities. Silver nanoparticles, like Ag+ in the form of AgNO3 solution, are tolerated by the bacteria strains resistant to Ag+. The antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles are related to their size, with the smaller particles having higher activities on the basis of equivalent silver mass content. The silver nanoparticles aggregate in media with a high electrolyte content, resulting in a loss of antibacterial activities. However, complexation with albumin can stabilize the silver nanoparticles against aggregation, leading to a retention of the antibacterial activities. Taken together, the results show that the antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles are dependent on chemisorbed Ag+, which is readily formed owing to extreme sensitivity to oxygen. The antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles are dependent on optimally displayed oxidized surfaces, which are present in well-dispersed suspensions.

In this study, disinfection of water containing Giardia intestinalis and Acanthamoeba castellani cysts with TiO2 and modified catalyst silver loaded TiO2 (Ag-TiO2) was investigated. Destruction of the parasites was evaluated after UV illumination of the suspension consisting 5 x 10(8)-13.5 x 10(8)cysts/mL in the presence of 2g/L neat or modified TiO2 at neutral pH. In the initial stage, the solid photocatalyst particles penetrated the cyst wall and then oxidant species produced by TiO2/UV destroyed both cell wall and intracellular structure. In the case of G. intestinalis inactivation (disinfection) performance of TiO2/UV system reached 52.5% only after 25 min illumination and total parasite disinfection was achieved after 30 min illumination. However, silver loaded TiO2 seemed to be more effective as this loading provided better catalytic action as well as additional antimicrobial properties. Cell viability tests showed that parasite cysts, their walls in particular, were irreversibly damaged and cysts did not re-grow. Nevertheless the studied system seemed to be ineffective for the inactivation of A. castellani. Inactivation percentages of TiO2/UV and Ag-TiO2/UV systems were far lower than that of UV alone, being 50.1% and 46.1%, respectively.

A TiO2 film having "photonic sponge" architecture (ps-TiO2) has been prepared using titania Degussa P25 nanoparticles that have been infiltrated into a template obtained through the arrangement of a mixture of different size latex spheres. The resulting photonic sponge exhibits 3.3 fold higher initial photocatalytic degradation rate for succinonitrile disappearance than analogous films of the same thickness made of unstructured P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. When corrected for the three fold lower mass of the ps-TiO2 films with respect to more dense P25, the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity by the photonic sponge morphology for the same mass of photocatalyst is about one order of magnitude. It was also observed that films of photonic sponge of 3 microm depth are more efficient than thicker films (5 and 7 microm).

TiO(2) photocatalysis with ultraviolet (UV-A) light has proven to be a highly effective process for complete inactivation of airborne microbes. However, the overall efficiency of the technology needs to be improved to make it more attractive as a defense against bio-terrorism. The present research investigates the enhancement in the rate of destruction of bacterial spores on metal (aluminum) and fabric (polyester) substrates with metal (silver)-doped titanium dioxide and compares it to conventional photocatalysis (TiO(2) P25/+UV-A) and UV-A photolysis. Bacillus cereus bacterial spores were used as an index to demonstrate the enhanced disinfection efficiency. The results indicate complete inactivation of B. cereus spores with the enhanced photocatalyst. The enhanced spore destruction rate may be attributed to the highly oxidizing radicals generated by the doped TiO(2).

Silver-doped organic-inorganic hybrid coatings were prepared starting from tetraethoxysilane- and triethoxysilane-terminated poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polyethylene by the sol-gel process. They were applied as a thin layer (0.6-1.1 microm) to polyethylene (PE) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films and the antibacterial activity of the coated films was tested against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538) bacteria. The effect of several factors (such as organic-inorganic ratio, type of catalyst, time of post-curing, silver ion concentration, etc.) was investigated. Measurements at different contact times showed a rapid decrease of the viable count for both tested strains. The highest antibacterial activity [more than 6 log reduction within 6 h starting from 106 colony-forming units (cfu) mL-1] was obtained for samples with an organic-inorganic weight ratio of 80:20 and 5 wt % silver salt with respect to the coating. For the coatings prepared by an acid-catalyzed process, a high level of permanence of the antibacterial activity of the coated films was demonstrated by repeatedly washing the samples in warm water or by immersion in physiological saline solution at 37 degrees C for 3 days. The release of silver ions per square meter of coating is very similar to that previously observed for polyamides filled with metallic silver nanoparticles; however, when compared on the basis of Ag content, the concentration of silver ions released from the coating is much higher than that released from 1 mm thick specimens of polyamide (PA) filled with silver nanoparticles. Transparency and good adhesion of the coating to PE and PVC plastic substrates without any previous surface treatment are further interesting features.

By immobilizing synthesized Mn-TPAA (TPAA=tris[2-[N-(2-pyridylmethyl) amino] ethyl] amine) on TiO(2) nanoneedle surface, a biosensor for superoxide ion (O(2)(-)) has been developed and applied for determination of O(2)(-) released from living cells. Direct electron transfer of Mn-TPAA is realized with a formal redox potential (E°') falling in the range of the E°' values of the redox couples O(2)/O(2)(-) and O(2)(-)/H(2)O(2). This suggests that Mn-TPAA on TiO(2) films is electrochemically active and capable of thermodynamically mediating both the oxidation of O(2)(-) to O(2) and the reduction of O(2)(-) to H(2)O(2). Therefore, Mn-TPAA immobilized on the TiO(2) films can be used electrochemically for determination of O(2)(-) due to its electrochemical activities and biomimetic catalytic activities like superoxide dismutase (SOD) toward O(2)(-). The present biomimetic O(2)(-) sensor shows high selectivity at the low working potential of 0V vs. Ag|AgCl, a wide linear range from 10(-7)M to 10(-4)M and a quick response time within 6s. By taking advantage of the developed method and the properties of biomimetic SOD themselves, we have realized the real-time monitoring of O(2)(-) concentration released from living cells and investigated the relationship between the concentration changes of O(2)(-) and intracelluar Ca(2+), which may gain additional insights on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) signal transduction and other physiological and pathological events.

Chitosan-based silver nanoparticles were synthesized by reducing silver nitrate salts with nontoxic and biodegradable chitosan. The silver nanoparticles thus obtained showed highly potent antibacterial activity toward both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, comparable with the highly active precursor silver salts. Silver-impregnated chitosan films were formed from the starting materials composed of silver nitrate and chitosan via thermal treatment. Compared with pure chitosan films, chitosan films with silver showed both fast and long-lasting antibacterial effectiveness against Escherichia coli. The silver antibacterial materials prepared in our present system are promising candidates for a wide range of biomedical and general applications.

In this paper we reported preparation of methylcellulose-silver nanocomposite films by mixing of aqueous solution of methylcellulose with silver nitrate followed by casting. The silver nanoparticles were generated in methylcellulose matrix through reduction and stabilization by methylcellulose. The surface plasmon band at 412nm indicated the formation of Ag nanoparticles. The MC-Ag nanocomposite films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The X-ray diffraction analysis of synthesized MC-Ag nanocomposite films revealed that metallic silver was present in face centered cubic crystal structure. Average crystallite size of silver nanocrystal was 22.7nm. The FTIR peaks of as-synthesized MC-Ag nanocomposite fully designated the strong interaction between Ag nanoparticles and MC matrix. Nano-sized silver modified methylcellulose showed enhanced mechanical properties i.e. the introduction of Ag leading to both strengthening and toughening of MC matrix. The methylcellulose-silver nanocomposite films offered excellent antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of TiO(2) nanocrystals with different crystal styles modified fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode was investigated in H(2)O(2) solution. The amorphous TiO(2) nanospheres were facilely synthesized by the hydrothermal and condensation method. Crystal TiO(2), namely anatase and rutile, were prepared by calcination of the amorphous TiO(2) nanospheres at 450 and 800°C, respectively. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electron diffraction pattern were used to characterize the obtained TiO(2) nanoparticles morphology and the corresponding crystal styles. The electrochemical and ECL behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The ECL quenching was observed by introduction of gold nanoparticles. Based on the quenching effect, a sensitive glucose ECL biosensor as a model was fabricated by in-situ growing-up gold seeds in AuCl(4)(-) solution induced by biologically generated H(2)O(2). The linear range to detect glucose is from 5.0×10(-7)M to 4.0×10(-3)M with the limit of detection of 2.5×10(-7)M.

Nanocomposite films were prepared by the addition of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) eventually surfactant modified (s-CNC) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles in the polylactic acid (PLA) matrix using melt extrusion followed by a film formation process. Multifunctional composite materials were investigated in terms of morphological, mechanical, thermal and antibacterial response. The nanocomposite films maintained the transparency properties of the PLA matrix. Thermal analysis showed increased values of crystallinity in the nanocomposites, more evident in the s-CNC based formulations that had the highest tensile Young modulus. The presence of surfactant favoured the dispersion of cellulose nanocrystals in the polymer matrix and the nucleation effect was remarkably enhanced. Moreover, an antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli cells was detected for ternary systems, suggesting that these novel nanocomposites may offer good perspectives for food packaging applications which require an antibacterial effect constant over time.

The antimicrobial property of stabilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with phospholipid membrane was investigated on both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacterial strains. The influence of phospholipid concentrations on antibacterial kinetics actions of AgNPs was studied with two different methodologies in order to understand the bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects. The bacterial inactivation of synthesized AgNPs fitted well to the Chick-Watson model with a high regression coefficient, R(2) > 0.91. The antibacterial properties of AgNPs depend on the particle size, stabilizer and lecithin concentrations. Only the stabilized AgNPs that have the K(lec/Ag) values of 1 and 2 presented the inhabitation zone, while unstabilized AgNPs agglomerated quickly, settled on the wells and did not diffuse in agar. In addition, the specific coefficient of lethality depends on the lecithin concentration. An increase in lecithin concentration caused multilayer creation on the AgNPs' surface and reduced the release of AgNPs which led to low bacterial killing rate.

A novel technique for patterning based on visible light at Au-TiO2 and Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite film surfaces has been developed for the first time. TiO2 films loaded with Au and Ag nanoparticles were modified with hydrophobic thiols to obtain hydrophobic surfaces. The surfaces were converted to hydrophilic by visible light irradiation. Hydrophobic/hydrophilic patterning was also possible by visible light irradiation through a photomask. The patterning was due to removal of the thiol based on plasmon photoelectrochemistry. Visible-light-induced plasmon resonance at the Au and Ag nanoparticles gives rise to charge separation and redox reactions. The thiol is removed from the Au-TiO2 film probably by oxidative desorption, and from the Ag-TiO2 film owing chiefly to oxidation of Ag nanoparticles to Ag+.

A new methodology was developed to synthesize uniform titania anatase nanocrystals by the hydrolysis of titanium chloride in sulfuric acid aqueous solutions at 0-90°C. The samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED), and an Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The effects of the reaction temperature, mole ratio of SO(4)(2-) to Ti(4+), and the calcinations temperature on the particle size and crystal phase were investigated. Depending on the acidity, the hydrolysis temperature, and the calcination temperature, rhombic anatase nanocrystals sizes in the range of 10 nm to 50 nm were obtained. In the additive of sulfuric acid, Raman spectra and electron diffraction confirmed that the nanoparticles are composed of anatase TiO(2). No other titania phases, such as rutile or brookite, were detected.

The medicinal and physicochemical properties of nanoscale materials are strong functions of the particle size and the materials used in their synthesis. The nanoparticle shape also contributes significantly to their medicinal properties. Several shapes ranging from oval, spherical, rods, to teardrop structures may be obtained by chemical methods. Triangular and hexagonal nanoparticles have been synthesized by using a pine cone extract (PCE). Here, we report the discovery that PCE, when reacted with silver nitrate ions, yields a high percentage of thin, flat, single-crystalline nanohexagonal and nanotriangular silver nanoparticles. The nanohexagonal and nanotriangular nanoparticles appear to grow by a process involving rapid reduction with assembly at room temperature at a high pH. The nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The anisotropy of the nanoparticle shape results in large near-infrared absorption by the particles. Highly anisotropic particles are applicable in various fields, including agriculture and medicine. The obtained silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) had significant antibacterial action on both Gram classes of bacteria associated with agriculture. Because the Ag NPs are encapsulated with functional group-rich PCE, they can be easily integrated in various applications.
