Carbofuran-containing insecticides are widely used agents in plant protection. Their use may pose considerable environmental risk for both the protected and non-protected predator and plantivorous birds. For defence of wild birds a model experiment was carried out on broiler chickens. In the study, eight animals were treated orally by gastric tube with a carbofuran-containing insecticide at a single dose of 2.5 mg/kg b.w. One animal served as untreated control specimen. Forage and drinking water were provided ad libitum. After the treatment, the possible clinical signs were observed carefully, blood samples were obtained from each bird and after exsanguinations liver, breast and leg muscle samples and stomach content were taken. The carbofuran concentration in blood, tissues and stomach content was determined by gas chromatographic method. Thirty minutes after poisoning, the average carbofuran concentration in breast muscle of chickens exceeded the maximum level of 0.1 mg/kg permitted in edible tissues, whereas ninety minutes after poisoning the concentration of one sample was still above the limit value. In the liver, leg-muscle and blood samples, the measured carbofuran concentration was lower than the permitted maximum value, except in the blood of two animals. The carbofuran concentration of the stomach content markedly exceeded the limit value. The sublethal concentration of the pesticides can reduce the capable of living of wild animals. Due to the sub toxic dose the poisoned birds can survive; however, the residue of insecticides can lead to secondary toxicosis of other animals.  相似文献

A juvenile white-tailed sea eagle found alive on an island in the Baltic Sea died due to a secondary carbofuran poisoning. At necropsy, parts of a raven were found in the eagle’s gizzard, including the stomach containing seeds with carbofuran residues. Illegal persecution using poisoned baits often kill scavenging birds of prey. However, secondary poisoning of birds of prey has been rarely reported in Europe. The report aims to raise awareness to include toxicological analysis in forensic examinations in cases of otherwise healthy and well-feed birds found dead with no obvious cause of mortality.  相似文献

Lead and zinc poisoning have been recorded in a variety of bird species, including migrating waterfowl such as Canada Geese (Branta canadensis), at sites contaminated with mine waste from lead and zinc mines in the Tri-State Mining District, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, USA. The adverse health impacts from mine waste on these birds may, however, be more extensive than is apparent from incidental reports of clinical disease. To characterize health impacts from mine waste on Canada Geese that do not have observable signs of poisoning, four to eight apparently healthy birds per site were collected from four contaminated sites and an uncontaminated reference site, and examined for physical and physiologic evidence of metals poisoning. Tissue concentrations of silver, aluminum, arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, selenium, thallium, vanadium, and zinc were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. Adverse health effects due to lead were characterized by assessing blood δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) enzyme activity. Adverse effects associated with zinc poisoning were determined from histologic examination of pancreas tissues. Elevated tissue lead concentrations and inhibited blood ALAD enzyme activities were consistently found in birds at all contaminated sites. Histopathologic signs of zinc poisoning, including fibrosis and vacuolization, were associated with elevated pancreatic zinc concentrations at one of the study sites. Adverse health effects associated with other analyzed elements, or tissue concentrations indicating potentially toxic exposure levels to these elements, were not observed.  相似文献

We describe cases of pesticide poisoning of wild birds diagnosed at the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (Kyunggi, Korea) from 1998 to 2002. Forty-one mortality events (759 birds) of 87 incidents (2,464 birds) investigated were associated with pesticide poisoning, and six organophosphates or carbamates were identified as being responsible for the poisoning. Phosphamidon was most frequently identified as the cause of poisoning, accounting for 23 mortality events. Other pesticides identified as poisons for birds were organophosphates monocrotophus, fenthion, parathion, EPN, and diazinon, and the carbamate carbofuran. Pesticide poisoning is a problem in wild birds in Korea.  相似文献

Elevated lead in the tissues of raptors, especially those that scavenge, is a common occurrence, and lead poisoning appears to be a significant problem in the ongoing recovery effort for California condors (Gymnogyps californianus). Elevated blood lead levels have been found in released birds, and a number of birds have died of lead poisoning. In earlier work, we dosed turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) with lead shot but found them to be a poor model for lead poisoning. In this study, we dosed four Andean condors (Vultur gryphus) with lead shot and found them to be quite sensitive, as two of the birds died and the other two exhibit signs of lead poisoning within 50 days. All lead-responsive parameters were affected, and regurgitation of dosed shot occurred only once. The response of the Andean condors appeared to mimic California condors, suggesting that once exposed to lead, the possibility of survival is poor. This is consistent with observations in the wild, where otherwise healthy birds exposed to metallic lead quickly succumb. At the very least, the release program has to maintain constant surveillance and an active lead monitoring program.  相似文献

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is widely used as a deicing agent on roadways. There are numerous anecdotal reports of poisoning of passerine birds by road salt in the United States and Canada, but little is known about the toxicity of NaCl to songbirds. The objectives of this study were to determine the lethal dose range for NaCl in a representative passerine species (house sparrow [Passer domesticus]); to determine the clinical, physiologic, and pathologic effects of sublethal and lethal oral NaCl exposure; and to assess the potential for recovery after exposure to granular salt or highly concentrated salt solutions. The up-and-down method was used in a pilot study to estimate the lethal oral dose of granular NaCl in wild caught house sparrows. The toxicity of highly concentrated NaCl solution also was investigated. This was followed by an acute dose response study in which house sparrows were dosed orally with granular NaCl at 0, 500, 1,500, 2,500, or 3,500 mg/kg. Sparrows were deprived of water for 6 hr postexposure (PE) in an attempt to mimic specific winter conditions. Groups of three birds at each dose were euthanized at 1, 3, 6, and 12 hr PE, and samples were collected for histopathology and brain and plasma electrolyte analyses. Results indicated an approximate mean lethal dose (LD50) of 3,000-3,500 mg/kg in water-deprived birds, which is similar to mammalian values. House sparrows dosed with a concentrated solution of NaCl generally died at doses of 8,000 mg/kg. Clinical signs observed at >or=1,500 mg/kg included rapid onset (<30 min) of depression (indicated by reduced activity and reduced response to visual and auditory stimuli), ataxia, inability to fly or perch, and death in as little as 45 min. Birds that survived for 6 hr usually recovered. Plasma Na concentrations >200 mmol/l were consistently associated with clinical signs. Pathologic lesions consisted of edema and distension of the caudoventral thin muscled region of the gizzard and were observed 1 hr PE in most birds dosed with >or=500 mg/kg. Brain Na concentrations in clinically ill sparrows and those that died of NaCl toxicity ranged from 1,297 to 1,615 (mean=1,450; SD=115) ppm wet weight or 5,603 to 6,958 (mean=6,367; SD=454) ppm dry weight, which differed significantly from control birds. No histologic lesions were observed in brain sections of exposed birds, likely reflecting the acute nature of the exposure. However, fluid accumulation beneath the koilin layer of the gizzard was observed in the majority of birds at high dosage levels. These results indicate that passerines ingesting relatively small numbers of road salt granules or small quantities of highly concentrated NaCl solutions are at risk of sodium poisoning.  相似文献

These experiments bring new information concerning the immunological status after birth of quail → chick spinal cord chimeras. Such birds have been produced using recipient flocks of chickens different from those in our previous experiments. The breakdown of tolerance after hatching has been recorded and found to vary with the origin of the embryos. Chickens of broiler JA 657 strain and of a white leghorn strain raised in Japan started to exhibit signs of neural graft rejection later in life than the white leghorn chickens from a French breeder used in our previous studies. As previously described, in two animals, long-term tolerance was observed only for allogeneic chick → chick neural tube grafts. In one chimera the neurological syndrome resulting from rejection was reversible, and no signs of immune attack of the grafted central nervous tissue could be detected at sacrifice. This and other observations reported in this article strongly support the contention that the host immune response to foreign neural tissues starts in peripheral nerves and ganglia where no blood-brain barrier exists rather than in the spinal cord. A humoral response of the host against non-polymorphic quail antigens present on fibroblasts was observed in all birds at the time of rejection.  相似文献

Sensitivities of six avian species, black vulture (Coragyps atratus), American kestrel (Falco sparverius), Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus), eastern screech-owl (Otus asio), and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), to acute poisoning by sodium cyanide (NaCN) were compared by single dose LD50's. Three species, domestic chickens, black vultures, and turkey vultures (Cathartes aura), were dosed with NaCN to determine cyanide residues in those that died and also in survivors, in addition to postmortem fate. Three flesh-eating species (black vulture, American kestrel, and eastern screech-owl; LD50's 4.0-8.6 mg/kg) were more sensitive to NaCN than three species (Japanese quail, domestic chicken, and European starling; LD50's 9.4-21 mg/kg) that fed predominantly on plant material. Elevated concentrations of cyanide were found in the blood of birds that died of cyanide poisoning; however, concentrations in birds that died overlapped those in survivors. Blood was superior to liver as the tissue of choice for detecting cyanide exposure. No gross pathological changes related to dosing were observed at necropsy.  相似文献

The effects of the growth promoters avoparcin and avilamycin and the ionophore anticoccidials maduramicin, narasin and monensin on the growth of Clostridium perfringens (Cp) in the ceaca and on performance of broiler chickens were tested in 2 experiments. The supplements were fed as single feed additives or in some combinations. No clinical signs or lesions caused by coccidia were observed in any of the studies. All supplements had an antibacterial effect on Cp and improved growth rate significantly. Carcass yield of birds fed growth promoters avilamycin or avoparcin was significantly higher compared with birds fed anticoccidials. These data indicate that, what concerns bird performance, during good hygienic conditions supplementation with antibiotic growth promoters may not be necessary when the diet is supplemented with an anticoccidial with antibacterial effects.  相似文献

The effects of oestrogen and progesterone on the re-excretion of IB virus strain G in chickens infected at day-old was evaluated in this study. Following infection of the chickens at day-old, the birds were swabbed regularly from the trachea and cloaca until no more virus was isolated from either site. Between 10 and 14 weeks of age oestrogen and progesterone were administered by intramuscular injection to infected or control chickens. An infected but non-hormone injected group was maintained. All the birds were monitored for virus re-excretion and/or increase in serum neutralising (SN) antibody levels during this period of treatment. Similar parameters, and the egg production of these birds were evaluated when they reached their natural sexual maturity. At the end of the experiment, the birds were sacrificed and their internal organs especially the reproductive organs were examined for any pathological lesions. The acute phase of the disease following infection at day-old was typical of IB virus infection in terms of clinical signs and virus excretions from trachea and cloaca [1]. The injected hormones failed to induce virus re-excretion as no virus was isolated during this period. There was no change in the level of antibody during this period either. However, when the hens attained their natural sexual maturity, IB virus was re-excreted by all the birds. Isolations was also more frequent from the cloaca than from the trachea. The SN antibody levels of individual showed no definite pattern to correspond with periods of re-excretion in the birds up to the end of the experiment. The control birds remained normal throughout the period of the study.  相似文献

Techniques for detecting various levels of both field and vaccine strains of infectious bronchitis virus in a deliberately contaminated Newcastle disease vaccine were compared using chick embryos, chick kidney cells, chick tracheal organ cultures and chickens with a view to determining the most appropriate method for screening vaccines for freedom from IBV contamination. Techniques examined included detection of abnormalities and deaths in embryos, cytopathic effect in chick kidney cells, ciliostasis in chick tracheal organ cultures and clinical signs and virus isolation in chickens as well as the fluorescent antibody test, negative contrast electron microscopy and serology where appropriate. Results showed that the techniques capable of detecting both strains of infectious bronchitis virus were, in order of sensitivity, the fluorescent antibody test on allantoic cells from infected embryos, ciliostasis and direct electron microscopy of allantoic fluid. One surprising feature was the poor results obtained using chickens. Some detection was achieved with tracheal virus isolation and tracheal organ cultures prepared from inoculated birds and to a lesser extent with histology and clinical signs, but no technique detected the field strain.  相似文献

This study was conducted to characterize metabolic features of the breast muscle (pectoralis major) in chickens affected with the Wooden Breast myopathy. Live birds from two purebred chicken lines and one crossbred commercial broiler population were clinically examined by manual palpation of the breast muscle (pectoralis major) at 47–48 days of age. Metabolite abundance was determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using breast muscle tissue samples from 16 affected and 16 unaffected chickens. Muscle glycogen content was also quantified in breast muscle tissue samples from affected and unaffected chickens. In total, levels of 140 biochemicals were significantly different (FDR < 0.1 and fold-change A/U > 1.3 or < 0.77) between affected and unaffected chickens. Glycogen content measurements were considerably lower (1.7-fold) in samples taken from Wooden Breast affected birds when compared with samples from unaffected birds. Affected tissues exhibited biomarkers related to increased oxidative stress, elevated protein levels, muscle degradation, and altered glucose utilization. Affected muscle also showed elevated levels of hypoxanthine, xanthine, and urate molecules, the generation of which can contribute to altered redox homeostasis. In conclusion, our findings show that Wooden Breast affected tissues possess a unique metabolic signature. This unique profile may identify candidate biomarkers for diagnostic utilization and provide mechanistic insight into altered biochemical processes contributing to tissue hardening associated with the Wooden Breast myopathy in commercial chickens.  相似文献

We investigated the hypothesis that lead poisoning was the cause of the clinical syndrome of clenched feet paralysis and leg paresis in wild raptors. Swamp Harriers (Circus approximans) are one of three extant native raptor species in New Zealand. Harriers with the syndrome were found to have statistically significantly higher blood lead concentrations than those without clenched feet (t-test; t=-4.06, df=5, P=0.01). However, elevated blood lead concentrations were also present in 60% of wild harriers without the clinical syndrome of clenched feet paralysis and leg paresis. There were features of the response to chelation treatment, electroneurodiagnostics, and pathology that were inconsistent with lead poisoning as reported in other birds of prey. We conclude that lead may be a factor in the expression of this clinical syndrome of clenched claw paralysis but that other factors not identified in our study play a role in the expression of the disease.  相似文献

trans-4-Acetylaminostilbene (trans-AAS) is acutely toxic in rats and lesions are produced specifically in the glandular stomach. Toxicity is slightly increased by pretreating the animals with phenobarbital (PB) and is completely prevented by pretreatment with methylcholanthrene (MC). The prostaglandin inhibitors, indomethacin and acetyl salicylic acid, do not reduce toxicity. The high efficiency of MC suggested that toxicity is caused by reactive metabolites. trans-[3H]-AAS was administered orally to untreated and to PB- or MC-pretreated female Wistar rats and target doses in different tissues were measured by means of covalent binding to proteins, RNA and DNA. Macromolecular binding in the target tissue of poisoned animals was significantly lower than in liver and kidney and comparable to other non-target tissues. Pretreatment with MC lowered macromolecular binding in all extrahepatic tissues but not in liver. These findings are not in line with tissue specific metabolic activation. The only unique property of the target tissue, glandular stomach, that we observed was a particular affinity for the systemically available parent compound. In the early phase of poisoning, tissue concentrations were exceedingly high and the stomach function was impaired.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to study pathological changes of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) "KC 400" poisoning. In them chickens were administered with this agent for a relatively short time. Eleven experimental diets were prepared to contain 11 different PCB concentrations, 4,800 ppm being the highest, respectively. They were given to broiler chickens in initial feeding and later. All the chickens fed 300 ppm and higher concentrations of PCB died, showing the serious dilatation of uriniferous tubules and involution of the bursa of Fabricius, by the time when they reached 12 days of age. All the chickens, except a very few, fed 100 ppm remained alive at the end of the experimental period, when they were 41 days of age and exhibited such edematous changes as hydropericardium. Few chickens fed 50 ppm and less manifested pathological changes until the end of the experimental period, when they were 22 days of age. Two experimental diets were prepared to contain 600 and 200 ppm of PCB, respectively. They were given to layer chickens in initial feeding and later. These layers were sacrificed for autopsy every fourth day. A gain in body weight was retarded mostly in those fed 600 ppm. Dilatation of uriniferous tubules and involution of the bursa of Fabricius began in the very early stage of experimental feeding in both groups. Hydropericardium occurred to many of the chickens fed 200 ppm in the late stage of the experimental period. The results of both experiments indicated that there was no essential difference in changes of PCB poisoning between broiler and layer chickens. The principal changes of the poisoning were dilatation of uriniferous tubules, involution of the bursa of Fabricius, and edematous alterations. They appeared in a relatively early stage of the experimental period of PCB feeding. Their severity was strongly dependent upon the concentration of PCB contained in the diet.  相似文献

Carbofuran is known to inhibit neurotransmission system of insects. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the possible ameliorative effect of curcumin on carbofuran induced alterations in energy metabolism in brain and liver of rats. The results demonstrate that carbofuran caused a significant inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in rat liver but an increase in LDH activity in the brain. Increased LDH activity was also observed in the serum indicating organ damage in treated animals. Carbofuran caused an increase in level of pyruvic acid in rat liver but a decrease in the brain. A decrease in the level of soluble protein was also observed in the tissues studied. Pretreatment of animals with curcumin resulted in significant amelioration of the altered indices. These results indicate that carbofuran at sub lethal concentrations may adversely alter energy metabolism in brain and liver of non-target mammalian systems. Pretreatment of animals with curcumin may exhibit a potential to mitigate the carbofuran induced toxicity.  相似文献

Cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) was purified from cultures of Aspergillus flavus, and ca. 14 g of the toxin was collected for use in feeding studies. Chicken rations were artificially contaminated with purified CPA at concentrations of 10, 50, and 100 ppm (microgram/g) and fed ad libitum to eight groups of chickens for 7 weeks. Chickens receiving feed with 100 ppm of CPA had high mortality, decreased weight gain, and poor feed conversion when compared with birds receiving other doses. Postmortem examination showed that chickens fed the two greatest doses of CPA had proventricular lesions characterized by mucosal erosion and hyperemia (100 ppm) and by thick mucosa and dilated proventricular lumens (50 ppm). Birds given 100 ppm of CPA in feed also had numerous yellow foci in their livers and spleens. Microscopic examination of tissues of birds that received 100 ppm of CPA revealed ulcerative proventriculitis, mucosal necrosis in the gizzard, and hepatic and splenic necrosis and inflammation. Birds given 50 ppm of CPA had hyperplasia of the proventricular mucosal epithelium. Birds given 10 ppm of CPA and control birds had no significant treatment-related lesions.  相似文献

Hypo- and hyperosmotic NaCl were infused intravenously to examine osmotic release of arginine vasotocin (AVT) in anesthetized, acutely cardiac-denervated chickens and in conscious, chronically denervated birds. Mean arterial blood pressure was consistently higher in denervated compared to sham-operated chickens but heart rates were similar in experimental and control groups. Plasma AVT concentrations (pAVT) were significantly higher than controls in acutely, but not chronically, denervated chickens. The slope of the regression line relating pAVT to plasma sodium concentration was higher in denervated birds indicating that removal of cardiac receptor activity increases the osmotic sensitivity of the AVT system. The results suggest that cardiac end-net receptor activity may participate in the regulation of blood pressure and can modulate the release of antidiuretic hormone in the chicken.  相似文献

Histomonas meleagridis, a flagellated protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of histomonosis (syn. histomoniasis, blackhead) in turkeys and chickens. The organs primarily affected by the parasite are the caeca and the liver. Until now, only few reports exist in which the parasite has been diagnosed in tissues other than those mentioned above. Hence, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic investigation of various organs of turkeys and specified pathogen-free chickens following an experimental infection with a mono-eukaryotic culture of Histomonas meleagridis in order to determine the dissemination of the flagellate in infected birds. Molecular methods like PCR and in situ hybridization were used for this purpose. For the first time, the DNA of the parasite could be detected in 13 different organs of infected turkeys by PCR including the proventriculus, duodenum, jejunum, caeca, pancreas, bursa of Fabricius, liver, kidney, spleen, heart, lung, thymus and the brain. Most of these findings were further confirmed by in situ hybridization. In contrast to the turkeys that all died shortly after the infection, all of the chickens survived without displaying any clinical symptoms. Even at necropsy, only mild pathological changes were observed in the caeca. Nevertheless, the parasite could also be detected in various organs of these birds, namely the caeca, bursa of Fabricius, kidney, heart and the brain.  相似文献
