A process-based carbonate budget was used to compare carbonate framework production at two reef sites subject to varying degrees of fluvial influence in Rio Bueno, Jamaica. The turbid, central embayment was subjected to high rates of fluvial sediment input, framework accretion was restricted to ≤30 m, and net carbonate production was 1,887 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1. Gross carbonate production (GCP) was dominated by scleractinians (97%), particularly by sediment-resistant species, e.g. Diploria strigosa on the reef flat (<2 m). Calcareous encrusters contributed very little carbonate. Total bioerosion removed 265 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1 and was dominated by microborers. At the clear-water site, net carbonate production was 1,236 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1; the most productive zone was on the fore-reef (10 m). Corals accounted for 82% of GCP, and encrusting organisms 16%. Bioerosion removed 126 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1 and was dominated by macroborers. Total fish and urchin grazing was limited throughout (≤20 g CaCO3 m−2 year−1). The study demonstrates that: (1) carbonate production and net reef accretion can occur where environmental conditions approach or exceed perceived threshold levels for coral survival; and (2) although live coral cover (and carbonate production rates) were reduced on reef-front sites along the North Jamaican coast, low population densities of grazing fish and echinoids to some extent offset this, thus maintaining positive carbonate budgets.  相似文献

The economic value of ecosystem services of vegetated habitats (seagrass and macroalgal beds) has been estimated to be among the highest of the various ecosystems on earth. However, fish production has not been included in the evaluations due to the difficulty of quantitative estimation of fish production in the field. In the present study, annual production and economic value of wild juvenile black rockfish, Sebastes cheni, a dominant fish species in seagrass and macroalgal beds in the central Seto Inland Sea were estimated. Juvenile S. cheni migrated into vegetated habitats at about 20 mm total length (TL) and grew up to about 60 mm TL by late May. Juvenile abundance was highest in April (2007) or March (2008). Eight cohorts with the same extrusion period (each cohort covering a 10-day period) were identified using otolith daily increments. The annual estimates of S. cheni juvenile production were 13,080 g ha−1 year−1 in 2007 and 18,360 g −1 year−1 in 2008. Based on the unit price of artificially raised S. cheni juveniles, the economic value of the annual wild juvenile production was converted to 654,000 JPY (Japanese yen: 100 JPY = ca. 1 USD) ha−1 year−1 for 2007 and 918,000 JPY ha−1 year−1 for 2008. Analyses of stomach contents and stable isotope (δ13C or δ15N) showed that juvenile S. cheni were highly dependent on copepods. The planktonic trophic pathway originating from phytoplankton supports the majority of the juvenile black rockfish production during the post-migration period (20–60 mm TL) in the seagrass and macroalgal beds through the production of copepod zooplankton. The total economic value of the ecosystem services of the vegetated habitat is suggested to be much higher than estimates in previous studies if the provisioning and regulating services which originate from fish production were included in the estimates.  相似文献

The degraded state of the fragile ecosystem of Chilika lagoon on the east coast of India caused by natural changes and anthropogenic pressure was in the process of restoration through an effective hydrological intervention during 2000 after thorough scientific investigation including EIA study. The rich fisheries of Chilika lagoon that support livelihood of 0.2 million local fisherfolk was in dwindling state during the eco-degradation phase. Studies on fisheries and fish biodiversity of the lagoon for 4 years before and 4 years after the intervention showed the stark and rapid recovery of fishery immediately after opening of the new mouth with sixfold increase in average annual landing. The average productivity (11.3 t km−2) and CPUE (6.2 kg boat-day−1) during post intervention phase registered 528 and 464% increase, as compared to Pre-intervention years. In total, 277 species of fish and shell fish were documented as occurring in Chilika lagoon before the hydrological intervention. Inventory survey for fish and shell fish species diversity during and after hydrological intervention documented 68 and 97 species, respectively. New records of 56 species of fish and shell fish (7 freshwater, 20 brackishwater and 29 marine) were documented from Chilika lagoon after the hydrological intervention. Analysis of commercial catches showed that the migratory species contributed to the bulk of catches (75% by species and 68% by catch weight). Fish yield and biodiversity seemed to be very sensitive to salinity and hydrologic dynamics of the lagoon. Correlation analysis indicated inverse relationship between water transparency and fish catch (R 2 = 0.715; d.f. = 25; P < 0.01). Positive correlation between salinity and prawn landing (R 2 = 0.542; d.f. = 25; P < 0.01) and salinity and mud crab landing (R 2 = 0.628; d.f. = 25; P < 0.001). Average salinity for the whole lagoon was significantly increased by 42.7% (P < 0.007) as compared to pre-intervention situation. Maintenance of estuarine character of Chilika’s ecosystem particularly the salinity gradient, un-hindered auto-recruitment of fish and shell fish and prevention of destructive fishing are the key factors for fisheries enhancement. Unless carefully planned conservation and regulation measures are ensured with the active participation of local communities during the early phase of restoration, the present scenario of fisheries enhancement may not sustain for longer time.  相似文献

We conducted a 4-year study of juvenile Pinus ponderosa fine root (≤2 mm) responses to atmospheric CO2 and N-fertilization. Seedlings were grown in open-top chambers at three CO2 levels (ambient, ambient+175 μmol/mol, ambient+350 μmol/mol) and three N-fertilization levels (0, 10, 20 g m−2 year−1). Length and width of individual roots were measured from minirhizotron video images bimonthly over 4 years starting when the seedlings were 1.5 years old. Neither CO2 nor N-fertilization treatments affected the seasonal patterns of root production or mortality. Yearly values of fine-root length standing crop (m m−2), production (m m−2 year−1), and mortality (m m−2 year−1) were consistently higher in elevated CO2 treatments throughout the study, except for mortality in the first year; however, the only statistically significant CO2 effects were in the fine-root length standing crop (m m−2) in the second and third years, and production and mortality (m m−2 year−1) in the third year. Higher mortality (m m−2 year−1) in elevated CO2 was due to greater standing crop rather than shorter life span, as fine roots lived longer in elevated CO2. No significant N effects were noted for annual cumulative production, cumulative mortality, or mean standing crop. N availability did not significantly affect responses of fine-root standing crop, production, or mortality to elevated CO2. Multi-year studies at all life stages of trees are important to characterize belowground responses to factors such as atmospheric CO2 and N-fertilization. This study showed the potential for juvenile ponderosa pine to increase fine-root C pools and C fluxes through root mortality in response to elevated CO2.  相似文献

The consumptive benefits of mangrove forests to subsistence economy receive little recognition. This paper quantifies the value of provisioning services of mangrove forests to local livelihoods in terms of forestry and fishery products. To examine the use of mangrove products, 324 households from 36 villages in the Bhitarkanika Conservation Area located in East Coast of India were surveyed using structured questionnaires. For estimating the contribution of mangrove forests to fish productivity, fish production was evaluated in three stages—inshore fishery, offshore fishery and the role of mangrove forests as nursery ground for fish and shellfish. The findings revealed that 14.2% of the fuel need of each household was being met by the forests. Other forestry products used were timber, honey and thatch grass. During the study, 14 species of fish and three of shellfish were recorded. The total catch for inshore fishery was estimated as 3.77 kg h−1 having market price of US2.25. In offshore fishery the number of species caught as well as income from the catch was higher in areas with mangroves (US 2.25. In offshore fishery the number of species caught as well as income from the catch was higher in areas with mangroves (US 44.61 h−1) than in those without mangroves (US$ 2.62 h−1). The market price of the forestry and fishery products used by the people was estimated as US$ 2.62 h−1). The market price of the forestry and fishery products used by the people was estimated as US 107 household−1 annum−1. The resources extracted from mangrove forests contributed to more than 14.5% of the total income of the household. This was around 30% for the households residing in the immediate vicinity of the forests. This study suggests that provisioning services provided by the mangrove forests are of significant importance to the coastal communities as they increase the resilience and sustainability of the local economy.  相似文献

Gross production and carbon cycling in aPhyllostachys bambusoides stand in Kyoto Prefecture, central Japan, were determined, and then a compartment model showing the carbon stock and cycling within the ecosystem was developed. Aboveground carbon stock was 52.3 tC ha−1, increasing at a rate of 3.6 tC ha−1 year−1. Belowground carbon stock was 20.8 tC ha−1 in the root system and 92.0 tC ha−1 in the soil. Aboveground net production was 11.2 tC ha−1 year−1. Belowground net production was crudely estimated at 4.5 tC ha−1 year−1. The gross production was estimated at 41.8 tC ha−1 year−1 by summing the amount of outflow to the environment and the increment in biomass. Leaves consumed 13.7 tC ha−1 year−1 by respiration; the rest (41.8−13.7=28.1 tC ha−1 year−1) was surplus production of the leaves and flowed into the other compartments. The amounts of construction and maintenance respiration of the aboveground compartments were 3.4 and 18.5 tC ha−1 year−1, respectively. The annual amount of soil respiration was 11.2 tC ha−1 year−1. Soil respiration levels of 4.3 and 3.1 tC ha−1 year−1 were estimated for the flow of root respiration and root detritus. The proportion of net to gross production was 37%, which fell within the range of young and mature forests. A shorter life span of culms, compared to tree trunks, resulted in smaller biomass accumulation ratio (biomass/net production) in the ecosystem, of 4.66.  相似文献

Culm recruitment, standing crop biomass, net production and carbon flux were estimated in mature (5 years after last harvest) and recently harvested bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxb.) Nees) savanna sites in the dry tropics. During the 2 study years bamboo shoot recruitment was 1711–3182 and 1432–1510 shoots ha−1 in harvested and mature sites, respectively. Corresponding shoot mortality was 66–93% and 62–69%, respectively. Total biomass was 34.9 t ha−1 at the harvested site and 47.4 t ha−1 at the mature site. Harvesting increased the relative contribution of belowground bamboo biomass. Annual litter input to soil was 2.7 and 5.9 t ha−1 year−1 at the harvested and mature sites, respectively. The bulk of the annual litterfall (78–88%) occurred in the cool dry season (November to February). The mean litter mass on the savanna floor ranged from 3.1 to 3.3 t ha−1; at the harvested site wood litter contributed 70% of the litter mass and at the mature site leaves formed 77% of the litter mass. The mean total net production (TNP) for the two annual cycles was 15.8 t ha−1 year−1 at the harvested site and 19.3 t ha−1 year−1 at the mature site. Nearly half (46–57%) of the TNP was allocated to the belowground parts. Short lived components (leaves and fine roots) contributed about four-fifths of the net production of bamboo. Total carbon storage in the system was 64.4 t ha−1 at the harvested site and 75.4 t ha−1 at the mature site, of which 23–28% was distributed in vegetation, 2% in litter and 70–75% in soil. Annual net carbon deposition was 6.3 and 8.7 t ha−1 year−1 at harvested and mature sites, respectively.  相似文献

Life-history and production of Olinga feredayi in both benthic and hyporheic stream habitats were investigated in a pristine Waikato, New Zealand, forest stream over two years to investigate the contribution of hyporheic habitat to total secondary production. O. feredayi had a univoltine life-history with adult emergence occurring from November to March. Larvae with case lengths < 2 mm were present on most dates suggesting delayed egg hatching. Benthic densities were inversely related to maximum peak daily flow in the month prior to sampling, and positively related to the dry mass of particulate organic matter present in samples. Reach-average benthic production calculated by the size-frequency method was 0.024 g DM m−2 year−1. Hyporheic production was 4.276 g DM m−3 year−1 and 6.462 g DM m−3 year−1 in colonisation baskets set at 15–30 cm and 30–45 cm within the substratum, respectively, 2.3–3.4 times greater than production in surface baskets (0–15 cm). Averaged out over the reach scale, it was estimated that 96% of annual secondary production of O. feredayi occurred in hyporheic habitats >10 cm below the streambed surface. Our study clearly demonstrates that only sampling benthic habitats can lead to gross under-estimation of population-level annual production, and provides evidence for the role of the hyporheos as a source of secondary production that may partly account for the Allen Paradox.  相似文献

The Southern Plateau subantarctic region, southeast of New Zealand, is an important feeding area for birds, seals and fish, and a fishing ground for commercially significant species. The Southern Plateau is a major morphometric feature, covering approximately 433,620 km2 with average depth of 615 m. The region is noted for its relatively low levels of phytoplankton biomass and primary production that is iron-limited. In order to evaluate the implications of these attributes for the functioning of this ecosystem a steady-state, 19-compartment model was constructed using Ecopath with Ecosim software of Christensen et al. [www.ecopath.org]. The system is driven by primary production that is primarily governed by the supply of iron and light. The total system biomass of 6.28 g C m−2 is very low compared with systems so far modelled with a total system throughput of 1136 g C m−2 year−1. In the model, the Southern Plateau retains 69% of the biomass in the pelagic system and 99% of total production. Although fish are caught demersally, most of their food is part of production in the pelagic system. Top predators represent about 0.3% of total biomass and account for about 0.24 g C m−2 year−1 of food consumed made up of birds 0.058 g C m−2 year−1, seals 0.041 g C m−2 year−1, and toothed 0.094 g C m−2 year−1 and baleen whales 0.051 g C m−2 year−1. This amounts to 105,803 tonnes carbon over the whole of the Southern Plateau and is about 17% of the total amount of food eaten by non-mesopelagic fish. Mean transfer efficiencies between trophic levels II and IV of 23% are at the high end of the range reported in the literature. In the model, adult fish production is almost completely accounted for by the fisheries take (32%), consumption by seals (7%), toothed whales (21%), other adult fish (13%), and squid (20%). Fish and squid catches are at the trophic levels of 4.8 and 5.0, respectively. The gross efficiency of the fishery is 0.018% (catch/primary production). Although not all data come from direct knowledge of this system, the model reflects its general characteristics, namely a low primary production system dominated by the microbial loop, low sedimentation to the seafloor, high transfer efficiencies, a long food web and supporting high-level predators.  相似文献

Aboveground net primary production (ANPP) by the dominant macrophyte and plant community composition are related to the changing hydrologic environment and to salinity in the southern Everglades, FL, USA. We present a new non-destructive ANPP technique that is applicable to any continuously growing herbaceous system. Data from 16 sites, collected from 1998 to 2004, were used to investigate how hydrology and salinity controlled sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense Crantz.) ANPP. Sawgrass live biomass showed little seasonal variation and annual means ranged from 89 to 639 gdw m−2. Mortality rates were 20–35% of live biomass per 2 month sampling interval, for biomass turnover rates of 1.3–2.5 per year. Production by C. jamaicense was manifest primarily as biomass turnover, not as biomass accumulation. Rates typically ranged from 300 to 750 gdw m−2 year−1, but exceeded 1000 gdw m−2 year−1 at one site and were as high as 750 gdw m−2 year−1 at estuarine ecotone sites. Production was negatively related to mean annual water depth, hydroperiod, and to a variable combining the two (depth-days). As water depths and hydroperiods increased in our southern Everglades study area, sawgrass ANPP declined. Because a primary restoration goal is to increase water depths and hydroperiods for some regions of the Everglades, we investigated how the plant community responded to this decline in sawgrass ANPP. Spikerush (Eleocharis sp.) was the next most prominent component of this community at our sites, and 39% of the variability in sawgrass ANPP was explained by a negative relationship with mean annual water depth, hydroperiod, and Eleocharis sp. density the following year. Sawgrass ANPP at estuarine ecotone sites responded negatively to salinity, and rates of production were slow to recover after high salinity years. Our results suggest that ecologists, managers, and the public should not necessarily interpret a decline in sawgrass that may result from hydrologic restoration as a negative phenomenon.  相似文献

Closure of the Clipperton Island atoll (10°17′ N 109°13′ W), now a meromictic lake, is estimated to have occurred between 1839 and 1849. It was still closed in 2005. Brackish waters in the upper layer (0–10 m) were oxygenated, while saline waters in the deep layer (>20 m) were anoxic. Allowing for the methodological difficulties of earlier measurements, the physical characteristics of the lagoon did not seem to have changed significantly since the last expedition (1980). The intermediate layer between brackish and saline waters was characterized by a strong density gradient and a temperature inversion of up to 1.6°C. Microbial activity, water exchange between the deep layer and surrounding oceanic waters and the geothermal flux hypothesis are discussed. The low DIN and SRP concentrations observed in the upper layer, despite high nutrient input by seabird droppings, reflect the high nutrient uptake by primary producers as attested by the elevated overall gross primary production (6.6 g C m−2 day−1), and high suspended photosynthetic biomass (2.23 ± 0.23 μg Chl a l−1) and production (263 ± 27 μg C l−1 day−1). Phytoplankton composition changed in 67 years with the advent of new taxa and the disappearance of previously recorded species. The freshwater phytoplanktonic community comprised 43 taxa: 37 newly identified during the expedition and 6 previously noted; 16 species previously found were not seen in 2005. The closure of the lagoon, combined with the positive precipitation–evaporation budget characteristic of the region, has induced drastic changes in lagoon functioning compared with other closed atolls.  相似文献

Growth, biomass and production of two small barbs (Barbus humilis and Barbus tanapelagius) and their role in the food web of Lake Tana were investigated. From length–frequency distribution of trawl monitoring surveys growth coefficient, Φ′ values were estimated at 3.71–4.17 for B. humilis and 3.70–4.14 for B. tanapelagius, respectively. Values for B. humilis were confirmed in pond experiments. Mean biomass of the small barbs was 13.3 kg fresh wt ha−1, with B. humilis being most abundant in the littoral and sub-littoral zones, whereas B. tanapelagius was most abundant in the sub-littoral and pelagic zones. The two small barbs had a production of 53 kg fresh wt ha−1 year−1. Although their P/B ratios of about 4.0 were relatively high for small cyprinids, both their biomass and production were low in comparison with other small fish taxa in other tropical lakes. Of the zooplankton production only about 29% was consumed by the small barbs. However, they did not utilize calanoid copepods, which were responsible for approximately 57% of the zooplankton production and it is likely that small barb production was food limited during certain periods of the year. Piscivorous labeobarbs consumed about 56% of the small barbs production annually, but additionally, Clarias gariepinus, and many bird species were also preying on them. Therefore, limitation of Barbus production by predation during certain periods in the year cannot be excluded.  相似文献

The cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is the most abundant species of the Brazilian ornamental fish trade, constituting more than 80% of the ornamental fish collected in the middle Negro River basin. Stable isotope analyses were used to identify the autotrophic carbon sources and trophic position for the cardinal in relation to the plant groups at the base of its foodchain. Filamentous algae, tree and plant leaves and cardinals were collected in stream habitats, flooded forest and interfluvial swamps (campos) during peak flood, falling water and low water periods. δ15N values of the cardinal in relation to the plants at the base of the food chain indicated a trophic position of omnivore. Values of δ13C for the plants ranged from −43.1 to −26.4‰, with averages of −37.6, −30.4, and −29.4‰ for filamentous algae, flooded forest leaves, and campo leaves, respectively. The δ13C values for the cardinal ranged from −35.0 to −27.9‰, with an average of −31.4‰. Relative contributions of plants to fish carbon were estimated in a two end-member mixing model which determined that the leaves (flooded forest and campo leaves combined) and filamentous algae had average relative contributions to cardinal carbon of 71% and 29%, respectively. However, seasonal variation in the relative contributions was encountered throughout the hydrological cycle. The cardinals least enriched in 13C were encountered in November during the falling water period, indicating that they had perhaps recently migrated down from interfluvial campos where filamentous algae production is significant. Considering that algal production has been reported to be less than 1% of total primary production in the Negro River, these results could suggest some evidence of selective herbivory in the cardinal’s food chain. Invasive species can monopolize resources and thus dominate ecosystem production. In this study we estimated secondary production and diet of four populations of Pomacea canaliculata, a freshwater invasive snail, in wetlands (abandoned paddy, oxbow pond, drainage channel, and river meander) in monsoonal Hong Kong (lat. 22°N). Apple snail secondary production (ash-free dry mass [AFDM]) ranged from 165.9 to 233.3 g m−2 year−1, and varied between seasons. Production was lower during the cool dry northeast monsoon, when water temperatures might have limited growth, but fast growth and recruitment of multiple cohorts were possible throughout much (7–10 months) of the year and especially during the warm, wet southwest monsoon. The diet, as revealed by stomach-content analysis, consisted mainly of detritus and macrophytes, and was broadly consistent among habitats despite considerable variation in the composition and cover of aquatic plants. Apple snail annual production was >10 times greater than production estimates for other benthic macroinvertebrates in Hong Kong (range 0.004–15 g AFDM m−2 year−1, n = 29). Furthermore, annual production estimates for three apple snail populations (i.e. >230 g AFDM m−2 year−1) were greater than published estimates for any other freshwater snails (range 0.002–194 g AFDM m−2 year−1, n = 33), regardless of climatic regime or habitat type. High production by P. canaliculata in Hong Kong was attributable to the topical climate (annual mean ~24°C), permitting rapid growth and repeated reproduction, together with dietary flexibility including an ability to consume a range of macrophytes. If invasive P. canaliculata can monopolize food resources, its high productivity indicates potential for competition with other macroinvertebrate primary consumers. Manipulative experiments will be needed to quantify these impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function in wetlands, combined with management strategies to prevent further range extension by P. canaliculata.  相似文献

The polychaete Nereis falsa Quatrefages, 1866 is present in the area of El Kala National Park on the East coast of Algeria. Field investigations were carried out from January to December 2007 to characterize the populations’ reproductive cycle, secondary production and dynamics. Reproduction followed the atokous type, and spawning occured from mid-June to the end of August/early September when sea temperature was highest (20–23°C). The diameter of mature oocytes was approximately 180 μm. Mean lifespan was estimated to about one year. In 2007, the mean density was 11.27 ind. m−2 with a minimum of 7.83 ind. m−2 in April and a maximum of 14.5 ind. m−2 in February. The mean annual biomass was 1.36 g m−2 (fresh weight) with a minimum of 0.86 g m−2 in December and a maximum of 2.00 g m−2 in June. The population consisted of two cohorts distinguishable from size frequency distributions. One cohort corresponded to the recruitment of 2006 and the other appeared during the study period in September 2007. The annual production of N. falsa was 1.45 g m−2 year−1, and the production/biomass ratio was 1.07 year−1.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of elevated CO2 (600 μl l−1 vs 350 μl l−1) and phosphorus supply (1 g P m−2 year−1 vs unfertilized) on intact monoliths from species-rich calcareous grassland in a greenhouse. Aboveground community dry mass remained almost unaffected by elevated CO2 in the first year (+6%, n.s.), but was significantly stimulated by CO2 enrichment in year two (+26%, P<0.01). Among functional groups, only graminoids contributed significantly to this increase. The effect of phosphorus alone on community biomass was small in both years and marginally significant only when analyzed with MANOVA (+6% in year one, +9% in year two, 0.1 ≥P > 0.05). Belowground biomass and stubble after two seasons were not different in elevated CO2 and when P was added. The small initial increase in aboveground community biomass under elevated CO2 is explained by the fact that some species, in particular Carex flacca, responded very positively right from the beginning, while others, especially the dominant Bromus erectus, responded negatively to CO2 enrichment. Shifts in community composition towards more responsive species explain the much larger CO2 response in the second year. These shifts, i.e., a decline in xerophytic elements (B. erectus) and an increase in mesophytic grasses and legumes occurred independently of treatments in all monoliths but were accelerated significantly by elevated CO2. The difference in average biomass production at elevated compared to ambient CO2 was higher when P was supplied (at the community level the CO2 response was enhanced from 20% to 33% when P was added, in graminoids from 17% to 27%, in legumes from 4% to 60%, and in C. flacca from 120% to 298% by year two). Based on observations in this and similar studies, we suggest that interactions between CO2 concentration, species presence, and nutrient availability will govern community responses to elevated CO2. To investigate the variability of primary production of boreal forest ecosystems under the current climatic changes, we compared the dynamics of annual increments and productivity of the main components of plant community (trees, shrubs, mosses) at three sites in the north of Siberia (Russia). Annual radial growth of trees and shrubs was mostly defined by summer temperature regime (positive correlation), but climatic response of woody plants was species specific and depends on local conditions. Dynamics of annual increments of mosses were opposite to tree growth. The difference in climatic response of the different vegetation components of the forest ecosystems indicates that these components seem to be adapted to use climatic conditions during the short and severe northern summer, and decreasing in annual production of one component is usually combined with the increase of other component productivity. Average productivity in the northern forest ecosystems varies from 0.05 to 0.14 t ha−1 year−1 for trees, from 0.05 to 0.18 t ha−1 year−1 for shrubs and from 0.54 to 0.66 t ha−1 year−1 for mosses. Higher values of tree productivity combined with lower annual moss productivity were found in sites in northern taiga in comparison with forest-tundra. Different tendencies in the productivity of the dominant species from each vegetation level (trees, shrubs, mosses) were indicated for the last 10 years studied (1990–1999): while productivity of mosses is increasing, productivity of trees is decreasing, but there is no obvious trend in the productivity of shrubs. Our results show that in the long term, the main contribution to changes in annual biomass productivity in forest-tundra and northern taiga ecosystems under the predicted climatic changes will be determined by living ground cover.  相似文献

Although sea urchins are critical for controlling macroalgae on heavily fished coral reefs, high densities threaten reefs, as urchins are also prodigous bioeroders. This study examined urchin population characteristics, bioerosion rates, their fish predators (Labridae), and potential competitors (Scaridae) on unprotected reefs and a reef within a marine protected area (MPA) in the lagoonal regions off Belize. Urchin density (<1 m−2) and bioerosion rates (∼0.2 kg CaCO3 m−2 year−1) were lowest and members of the Labridae were the highest (∼20 fish 200 m−3) within the MPA, while several unprotected reefs had higher (∼18–40 m−2) urchin densities, lower Labridae abundances (1–3 fish 200 m−3), and bioerosion rates ranging from ∼0.3–2.6 kg CaCO3 m−2 year−1. Urchin abundances were inversely related to Labridae (wrasses and hogfish) densities; however, on reef ridges, low algal cover (∼15%), small urchin size (∼14 mm), and low proportion of organic material in urchin guts suggested food limitation. Both top–down (predation) and bottom–up factors (food limitation) likely contribute to the control of urchins, predominantly Echinometra viridis, off Belize, thereby potentially diminishing the negative impacts of bioerosion activities by urchins.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry of an 18–22 year old forested watershed in western Maryland. We hypothesized that this watershed should not exhibit symptoms of N saturation. This watershed was a strong source of nitrate (NO3 ) to the stream in all years, with a mean annual export of 9.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 and a range of 4.4–18.4 kg N ha−1 year−1. During the 2001 and 2002 water years, wet deposition of inorganic N was 9.0 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 6.3 kg N ha−1 year−1, respectively. Watershed N export rates in 2001 and 2002 water years were 4.2 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 5.3 kg N ha−1 year−1, respectively. During the wetter water years of 2003 and 2004, the watershed exported 15.0 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 18.4 kg N ha−1 year−1, rates that exceeded annual wet deposition of N by a factor of two (7.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 in 2003) and three (5.5 kg N ha−1 year−1 in 2004). Consistent with the high rates of N export, were high concentrations (2.1–3.3%) of N in foliage, wood (0.3%) and fine roots, low C:N ratios in the forest floor (17–24) and mineral soil (14), high percentages (83–96%) of the amount of mineralized N that was nitrified and elevated N concentrations (up to 3 mg N l−1) in soil solution. Although this watershed contained a young aggrading forest, it exhibited several symptoms of N saturation commonly observed in more mature forests.  相似文献

Breeding adults and metamorphosing larval amphibians transfer energy between freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems during seasonal migrations and emergences, although rarely has this been quantified. We intensively sampled ambystomatid salamander assemblages (Ambystoma opacum,A. maculatum, and A. tigrinum) in five forested ponds in southern Illinois to quantify energy flow associated with egg deposition, larval production, and emergence of metamorphosed larvae. Oviposition by female salamanders added 7.0–761.4 g ash-free dry mass (AFDM) year−1 to ponds (up to 5.5 g AFDM m−2 year−1). Larval production ranged from 0.4 to 7.4 g AFDM m−2 year−1 among populations in three ponds that did not dry during larval development, with as much as 7.9 g AFDM m−2 year−1 produced by an entire assemblage. Mean larval biomass during cohort production intervals in these three ponds ranged from 0.1 to 2.3 g AFDM m−2 and annual P/B (production/biomass) ranged from 4 to 21 for individual taxa. Emergent biomass averaged 10% (range=2–35%) of larval production; larval mortality within ponds accounted for the difference. Hydroperiod and intraguild predation limited larval production in some ponds, but emerging metamorphs exported an average of 70.0±33.9 g AFDM year−1 (range=21.0–135.2 g AFDM year−1) from ponds to surrounding forest. For the three ponds where larvae survived to metamorphosis, salamander assemblages provided an average net flux of 349.5±140.8 g AFDM year−1 into pond habitats. Among all ponds, net flux into ponds was highest for the largest pond and decreased for smaller ponds with higher perimeter to surface area ratios (r 2 =0.94, P<0.05, n=5). These results are important in understanding the multiple functional roles of salamanders and the impact of amphibian population declines on ecosystems.
