This paper proposes a new optimization strategy to estimate nitrifiable nitrogen concentration in wastewater, nitrification rate, denitrification rate and/or COD available for denitrification of an activated sludge process submitted to intermittent aeration. The approach uses the oxydo-reduction potential and dissolved oxygen measurements only. The parameter identification is based on a Simplex optimization of a cost function related to the error between an experimental cycle (an aerobic period followed by an anoxic one) and a simulation of a reduced model derived from ASM1. Results show very good prediction of experimental oxygen, ammonium and nitrate profiles. The estimation of nitrifiable nitrogen and removal rates has been validated both on simulated data obtained from COST action 624 benchmark and on experimental data.  相似文献

The performance of an intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor (IASBR) technology was investigated in achieving partial nitrification, organic matter removal and nitrogen removal from separated digestate liquid after anaerobic digestion of pig manure. The wastewater had chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations of 11,540 ± 860 mg/L, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) concentrations of 2,900 ± 200 mg/L and total nitrogen (TN) concentrations of 4,041 ± 59 mg/L, with low COD:N ratios (2.9) and BOD5:COD ratios (0.25). Synthetic wastewater, simulating the separated digestate liquid with similar COD and nitrogen concentrations but BOD5 of 11,500 ± 100 mg/L, was also treated using the IASBR technology. At a mean organic loading rate of 1.15 kg COD/(m3 d) and a nitrogen loading rate of 0.38 kg N/(m3 d), the COD removal efficiency was 89.8% in the IASBR (IASBR-1) treating digestate liquid and 99% in the IASBR (IASBR-2) treating synthetic wastewater. The IASBR-1 effluent COD was mainly due to inert organic matter and can be further reduced to less than 40 mg/L through coagulation. The partial nitrification efficiency of 71–79% was achieved in the two IASBRs and one cause for the stable long-term partial nitrification was the intermittent aeration strategy. Nitrogen removal efficiencies were 76.5 and 97% in IASBR-1 and IASBR-2, respectively. The high nitrogen removal efficiencies show that the IASBR technology is a promising technology for nitrogen removal from low COD:N ratio wastewaters. The nitrogen balance analysis shows that 59.4 and 74.3% of nitrogen removed was via heterotrophic denitrification in the non-aeration periods in IASBR-1 and IASBR-2, respectively.  相似文献

Aerobic granulation with brewery wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Aerobic granular sludge was cultivated in a sequencing batch reactor fed with brewery wastewater. After nine-week operation, stable granules with sizes of 2-7 mm were obtained. With the granulation, the SVI value decreased from 87.5 to 32 mL/g. The granular sludge had an excellent settling ability with the settling velocity over 91 m/h. Aerobic granular sludge exhibited good performance in the organics and nitrogen removal from brewery wastewater. After granulation, high and stable removal efficiencies of 88.7% COD(t), 88.9% NH(4)(+)-N were achieved at the volumetric exchange ratio of 50% and cycle duration of 6h. The average COD(t) and COD(s) of the effluent were 212 and 134 mg/L, respectively, and the average effluent ammonium concentration was less than 14.4 mg/L. Nitrogen was removed due to nitrification and simultaneous denitrification in the inner core of granules.  相似文献

A significant amount of nitrous oxide (N(2)O), which is one of the serious greenhouse gases, is emitted from nitrification and denitrification of wastewater. Batch wastewater nitrifications with enriched nitrifiers were carried out under oxygen-limited condition with synthetic (without organic carbon) and real wastewater (with organic carbon) in order to find out the effect of ammonium concentration on N(2)O emission. Cumulated N(2)O-N emission reached 3.0, 5.7, 6.2, and 13.5 mg from 0.4 l of the synthetic wastewater with 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg/l NH(4)(+)-N, respectively, and 1.0 mg from the real wastewater with 125 mg/l NH(4)(+)-N. The results indicate that N(2)O emission increased with ammonium concentration and the load. The ammonium removal rate and nitrite concentration also increased N(2)O emission. Comparative analysis of N(2)O emission from synthetic and real wastewaters revealed that wastewater nitrification under oxygen-limited condition emitted more N(2)O than that of heterotrophic denitrification. Summarizing the results, it can be concluded that denitrification by autotrophic nitrifiers contributes significantly to the N(2)O emission from wastewater nitrification.  相似文献

Aerobic granular sludge is a new type of microbe auto-immobilization technology; in this paper, short-cut nitrification and denitrification were effectively combined with the granular sludge technology. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification granules were developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using synthetic wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen at 25 °C with a dissolved oxygen concentration above 2.0 mg/L and a 15 days sludge retention time. The characteristics of the sludge and the removal efficiency were studied, and the removal mechanisms of the pollutants and the process of short-cut nitrification were analyzed. The average granule diameter of the granular sludge was 704.0 μm. The removal rates of pollutants and the accumulation rate of nitrite in the SBR were studied. During treatment of wastewater with a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen, simultaneous nitrification, and denitrification and the stripping process could contribute to the removal of total nitrogen. The high pH value, the high concentration of free ammonia, and the delamination of granular sludge were the main factors contributing to the short-cut nitrification property of granular sludge in the reaction process.  相似文献

The performance of a 10 L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating slaughterhouse wastewater was examined at ambient temperature. The influent wastewater comprised 4672+/-952 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L, 356+/-46 mg total nitrogen (TN)/L and 29+/-10 mg total phosphorus (TP)/L. The duration of a complete cycle was 8 h and comprised four phases: fill (7 min), react (393 min), settle (30 min) and draw/idle (50 min). During the react phase, the reactor was intermittently aerated with an air supply of 0.8L/min four times at 50-min intervals, 50 min each time. At an influent organic loading rate of 1.2g COD/(Ld), average effluent concentrations of COD, TN and TP were 150 mg/L, 15 mg/L and 0.8 mg/L, respectively. This represented COD, TN and TP removals of 96%, 96% and 99%, respectively. Phase studies show that biological phosphorus uptake occurred in the first aeration period and nitrogen removal took place in the following reaction time by means of partial nitrification and denitrification. The nitrogen balance analysis indicates that denitrification and biomass synthesis contributed to 66% and 34% of TN removed, respectively.  相似文献

Coke wastewater is a highly toxic industrial effluent which is usually treated by a combination of physico-chemical and biological treatments. With the aim of completing prior studies carried out in CSTR, in this work we studied the treatment of coke wastewater in a pilot plant equipped with a 400 L stripping tank, a 350 L neutralization/homogenization tank and a 6 m high 1500 L sequential batch reactor (SBR), controlled by a PLC. Ammonia stripping efficiencies of 96% were obtained for HRT of 66 h. The biological treatment in the SBR led to removal efficiencies of 85% COD, 98% thiocyanate and 99% phenols for HRT of 115 h. Final concentrations in the effluent of 1.8 mg phenols/L, 5.4 mg SCN/L, 206 mg COD/L and 78 mg N-NH(4)(+)/L were obtained.  相似文献

The biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from nutrient-rich abattoir wastewater using granular sludge has been investigated. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor, seeded with granular sludge developed using synthetic wastewater, was operated for 13 months under alternating anaerobic and aerobic conditions. It is demonstrated that the granules could be sustained and indeed further developed with the use of abattoir wastewater. The organic, nitrogen, and phosphorus loading rates applied were 2.7 gCOD L(-1) day(-1), 0.43 gN L(-1) day(-1), and 0.06 gP L(-1) day(-1), respectively. The removal efficiency of soluble COD, soluble nitrogen and soluble phosphorus were 85%, 93%, and 89%, respectively. However, the high suspended solids in the effluent limited the overall removal efficiency to 68%, 86%, and 74% for total COD, TN, and TP, respectively. This good nutrient removal was achieved through the process known as simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal, likely facilitated by the presence of large anoxic zones in the center of the granules. The removal of nitrogen was likely via nitrite optimizing the use of the limited COD available in the wastewater. Accumulibacter spp. were found to be responsible for most of the denitrification, further reducing the COD requirement for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Mineral precipitation was evaluated and was not found to significantly contribute to the overall nutrient removal. It is also shown that the minimum HRT in a granular sludge system is not governed by the sludge settleability, as is the case with floccular sludge systems, but likely by the limitations associated with the transfer of substrates in granules.  相似文献

Enhanced biological nitrogen removal processes are necessarily required to cope with more stringent wastewater discharging regulations, especially for wastewater with low level of organic carbon to nitrogen ratios. The intermittent aeration activated sludge process has been received comprehensive attention over the past decades, due to its excellent performance in nitrogen removal and remarkable reduction of energy consumption. Recent advances for this technology was reviewed from aspects of characteristics of system, factors affecting nitrogen removal, nitrous oxide (N2O) emission and its control, and application of the technology and its operation control. Finally, future development was proposed. In the intermittent aeration activated sludge process, aeration duration should be controlled for adequate nitrification and non-aeration duration should be adequate for complete denitrification, and these would benefit both nitrogen removal and N2O mitigation. The step feed strategy could be applied to enhance the better utilization of influent organic carbon for nitrogen removal. Dissolved oxygen (DO) and aerobic duration both affected nitrogen removal in particular that via nitrite in the intermittent aeration process. Nitrite should be removed efficiently to avoid a high N2O emission under both anoxic and aerobic conditions. Intermittent aeration activated sludge process has been applied in the treatment of various wastewaters, such as municipal wastewater, swine wastewater, anaerobic effluents and landfill leachate. For practical application, DO, pH and oxidation–reduction potential could be used as indices for controlling nitrogen removal and N2O mitigation. Microbial ecology in the intermittent aeration activated sludge process should be specifically focused in future studies.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of zeolite powders on feasibility of rapid aerobic granulation in the column-type sequencing batch reactors. After 90 days' operation, aerobic granular sludge was formed in both reactors by altering influent chemical oxygen demand/nitrogen (COD/N) ratios. R1 with zeolite powders had better removal capabilities of COD and total nitrogen than R2, which was without zeolite powders. Mixed liquor volatile suspended solid concentrations of the two reactors were 7.36 and 5.45 g/L, while sludge volume index (SVI30) values were 34.9 and 47.9 mg/L, respectively. The mean diameters of aerobic granular sludge in the above two reactors were 2.5 and 1.5 mm, respectively. Both reactors achieved the largest simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) efficiency at an influent COD/N ratio of 8; however, R1 exhibited more excellent SND efficiency than R2. The obtained results could provide a novel technique for rapid aerobic granulation and N removal simultaneously, especially when treating nitrogen-rich industrial wastewater.  相似文献

Bacterial species capable of performing both nitrification and denitrification in a single vessel under similar conditions have gained significance in the wastewater treatment scenario considering their unique character of performing the above reactions under heterotrophic and aerobic conditions respectively. Such a novel strategy often referred to as simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) has a tremendous potential in dealing with various wastewaters having low C : N content, considering that the process needs very little or no external carbon source and oxygen supply thus adding to its cost-effective and environmentally friendly nature. Though like other micro-organisms, heterotrophic nitrifiers and aerobic denitrifiers convert inorganic or organic nitrogen-containing substances into harmless dinitrogen gas in the wastewater, their ecophysiological role in the global nitrogen cycle is still not fully understood. Attempts to highlight the role played by the heterotrophic nitrifiers and aerobic denitrifiers in dealing with nitrogen pollution under various environmental operating conditions will help in developing a mechanistic understanding of the SND process to address the issues faced by the traditional methods of aerobic autotrophic nitrification–anaerobic heterotrophic denitrification.  相似文献

A hydrogenotrophic denitrification system was evaluated in removing nitrate from synthetic aquaculture wastewater for recirculation purposes. Two membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems, namely, aeration–denitrification system (ADS) and denitrification–aeration system (DAS) were studied with 50 mg/L of influent concentrations for both organic matter and nitrate nitrogen. The DAS achieved better removal efficiency of 91.4% total nitrogen (T-N) and denitrification rate of 363.7 mg/L.day at a HRT of 3 h compared to ADS. Further, there was no nitrite accumulation in the DAS effluent. The nitrite accumulation in ADS effluent was lesser when CO2 was used as buffer rather than K2HPO4 and KH2PO4. Estimation of kinetic parameters of hydrogenotrophic bacteria indicated lesser sludge production compared to heterotrophic denitrification. In the DAS, membrane fouling was nonexistent in the aeration reactor that was used to produce the recirculating effluent. On the contrary, membrane fouling was observed in the denitrification reactor that supplied hydrogen to the mixed liquor. Thus, this study demonstrated DAS capability in maintaining the acceptable water quality appropriate for aquaculture, in which a closed recirculating system is typically used.  相似文献

The feasibility of using a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process to treat sewage was examined in this study. The obtained results showed that total nitrogen (TN) could be efficiently removed by 88.38% when influent TN and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 45.87 and 44.40 mg/L, respectively. In the first stage, nitritation was instantly achieved by the bioaugmentation strategy, and can be maintained under limited oxygen condition (below 0.2mg/L). The ratio of nitrite to ammonium in the effluent of the nitritation reactor can be controlled at approximate 1.0 by adjusting aeration rate. In the second stage, anammox was realized in the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, where the total nitrogen removal rate was 0.40 kg Nm(-3)d(-1) under limited-substrate condition. Therefore, the organic matter in sewage can be firstly concentrated in biomass which could generate biogas (energy). Then, nitrogen in sewage could be removed in a two-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal process.  相似文献

In this study, a vertical submerged biofilm reactor was applied to investigate autotrophic partial nitrification/denitrification and simultaneous sulfide removal by using synthetic wastewater. The appropriate influent ratios of ammonia and sulfide needed to achieve partial autotrophic nitrification and denitrification were evaluated with influent ammonium nitrogen ranging from 54.6 to 129.8 mg L?1 and sulfide concentrations ranging from 52.7 to 412.4 mg S L?1. The results demonstrated that the working parameter was more stable when the sulfur/nitrogen ratio was set at 3:2, which yielded the maximum sulfur conversion. Batch experiments with different phosphate concentrations proved that a suitable phosphate buffer solution to control pH values could improve synchronous desulfurization denitrification process performance.  相似文献

Although biological nitrogen removal via nitrite is recognized as one of the cost-effective and sustainable biological nitrogen removal processes, nitrite accumulation has proven difficult to achieve in continuous processes treating low-strength nitrogenous wastewater. Partial nitrification to nitrite was achieved and maintained in a lab-scale completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) treating real domestic wastewater. During the start-up period, sludge with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) but no nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was obtained by batch operation with aeration time control. The nitrifying sludge with the dominance of AOB was then directly switched into continuous operation. It was demonstrated that partial nitrification to nitrite in the continuous system could be repeatedly and reliably achieved using this start-up strategy. The ratio of dissolved oxygen to ammonium loading rate (DO/ALR) was critical to maintain high ammonium removal efficiency and nitrite accumulation ratio. Over 85% of nitrite accumulation ratio and more than 95% of ammonium removal efficiency were achieved at DO/ALR ratios in an optimal range of 4.0–6.0 mg O2/g N d, even under the disturbances of ammonium loading rate. Microbial population shift was investigated, and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis indicated that AOB were the dominant nitrifying bacteria over NOB when stable partial nitrification was established.  相似文献

A polyurethane packed-bed-biofilm sequential batch reactor was fed with synthetic substrate simulating the composition of UASB reactor effluents. Two distinct ammonia nitrogen concentrations (125 and 250 mg l(-1)) were supplied during two sequential long-term experiments of 160 days each (320 total). Cycles of 24h under intermittent aeration for periods of 1h were applied, and ethanol was added as a carbon source at the beginning of each anoxic period. Nitrite was the main oxidized nitrogen compound which accumulated only during the aerated phases of the batch cycle. A consistent decrease of nitrite concentration started always immediately after the interruption of oxygen supply and addition of the electron donor. Removal to below detection limits of all nitrogen soluble forms was always observed at the end of the 24h cycles for both initial concentrations. Polyurethane packed-bed matrices and ethanol amendments conferred high process stability. Microbial investigation by cloning suggested that nitrification was carried out by Nitrosomonas-like species whereas denitrification was mediated by unclassified species commonly observed in denitrifying environments. The packed-bed batch bioreactor favored the simultaneous colonization of distinct microbial groups within the immobilized microbial biomass. The biofilm was capable of actively oxidizing ammonium and denitrification at high ratios in intermittent intervals within 24h cycles.  相似文献

A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor fed with real municipal wastewater was used to study nitrous oxide (N(2)O) emissions from simulated wastewater treatment processes. The experiments were performed under four different controlled conditions as follows: (1) fully aerobic, (2) anoxic-aerobic with high dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, (3) anoxic-aerobic with low DO concentration, and 4) intermittent aeration. The results indicated that N(2)O production can occur from both incomplete nitrification and incomplete denitrification. N(2)O production from denitrification was observed in both aerobic and anoxic phases. However, N(2)O production from aerobic conditions occurred only when both low DO concentrations and high nitrite concentration existed simultaneously. The magnitude of N(2) O produced via anoxic denitrification was lower than via oxic denitrification and required the presence of nitrite. Changes in DO, ammonium, and nitrite concentrations influenced the magnitude of N(2)O production through denitrification. The results also suggested that N(2)O can be produced from incomplete denitrification and then released to the atmosphere during aeration phase due to air stripping. Therefore, biological nitrogen removal systems should be optimized to promote complete nitrification and denitrification to minimize N(2)O emissions.  相似文献

The effects of COD/N ratio (3-6) and salt concentration (0.5-2%) on organics and nitrogen removal efficiencies in three bench top sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with synthetic wastewater and one SBR with fish market wastewater were investigated under different operating schedules. The solids retention time (SRT, 20-100 days) and aeration time (4-10h) was also varied to monitor the performance. For synthetic wastewater, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were consistently greater than 95%, irrespective of changes in COD/N ratio, aeration time and salt concentrations. Increasing the salt concentrations decreased the nitrification efficiency, while high COD/N ratio's favored better nitrogen removal (>90%). The treatment of real saline wastewater ( approximately 3.2%) from a fish market showed high COD (>80%) and nitrogen (>40%) removal efficiencies despite high loading rate and COD/N fluctuations, which is due to the acclimatization of the biomass within the SBR.  相似文献
