Pallet-scale phosphine fumigations were conducted on pre-chilled iceberg lettuce under an insulated cover to determine efficacy against western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, and phytotoxicity to lettuce. Vacuum-cooled commercial iceberg lettuce at 3 °C was sealed in a plastic bag, covered with double-bubble foil insulation, and then fumigated with 484 ± 17 ppm phosphine for 18 h under storage at 20 °C. Lettuce temperature increased from 4.5 °C to 7.2 °C during the course of fumigations. The fumigation treatment was replicated three times and achieved complete control of 3453 western flower thrips. Lettuce quality was evaluated 2 weeks after fumigation and the fumigation had no significant negative impact on lettuce quality. This study demonstrates that insulated cover can be used to keep pre-chilled lettuce at low temperature suitable for low-temperature phosphine fumigation to control western flower thrips on harvested lettuce.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to develop ultralow oxygen (ULO) treatment for controlling western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), on broccoli at a low temperature of 1 degree C. Complete control was achieved in 5 d at 0.003% oxygen. Oxygen level affected efficacy of ULO treatment. At a higher oxygen level of 0.03%, 6-d treatment killed -85% of thrips, and 10-d treatment killed all thrips. The 5-d ULO treatment with 0.003% oxygen was successfully tested on iced commercial broccoli of several cultivars without any noticeable negative effects on shelf-life and postharvest quality. The ULO treatment provided a safe and effective alternative to methyl bromide fumigation for postharvest control of western flower thrips on exported broccoli for industrial development.  相似文献

A flower model trap developed by modifying an artificial yellow chrysanthemum flower was more attractive to flower thrips than commercial yellow sticky traps. Installation of these flower model traps (20 traps per 50 m2 plot) was reported to reduce seasonal populations of Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on strawberry flowers in greenhouses. In this study, we sought to determine if the installation of such flower model traps would reduce thrips populations in a pepper field. The traps were installed at the bottom of the plant canopy at varying densities (0, 5, 10, and 20 traps) in 20 plots (each 3 × 5 m2) using a completely randomized design. Thrips populations on pepper flowers were sampled from 1 to 29 July in 2009. All thrips sampled on the flowers were identified as F. intonsa. A significant effect of treatment and sampling date was found from repeated-measure analysis of variance. The highest density (20 traps per 15 m2) of traps significantly reduced the female and male F. intonsa population compared to the control by 61 and 49%, respectively. However, no difference in immature thrips numbers was found among the treatments. These results indicate that this flower model trap can be a useful tool for the management of flower thrips on field-grown peppers.  相似文献

The spider Latrodectus hesperus Chamberlin & Ivie (Araneae: Theridiidae) was subjected to low and ultralow oxygen (ULO) treatments at different temperatures. Complete control of the spiders was achieved in 24-h ULO treatments with 0.5% O2 or lower at 1 degrees C and in a 24-h low oxygen (2%) treatment at 15 degrees C. Oxygen level and temperature greatly affected spider mortality. At 1 degrees C, as oxygen level was decreased from 2 to 0.5%, spider mortality increased from 0 to 100%. At 2% O2, as temperature was increased from 1 to 15 degrees C, spider mortality increased from 0 to 100%. Grape clusters from two table grape (Vitis spp.) cultivars, 'Thompson Seedless' and 'Flame Seedless', were subjected to the 24-h ULO treatment with 0.5% O2 at 1 degrees C. The ULO treatment had no negative effects on grape quality. Because of the relatively short treatment time, effectiveness at low storage temperature and the easily attained oxygen level, we conclude that the ULO treatment have good potential to be implemented commercially for control of black widow spiders on harvested table grapes.  相似文献

Cut spikes of sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus L.) were kept in 2% sucrose, 200 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS), pulsing treatment with 200 ppm 8-HQS in combination with 2% sucrose for 12 h, pulsing the spikes with 0.2 mM silver thiosulfate (STS) for 1 h and pulsing with 0.2 mM STS for 1 h followed by 2% sucrose solution. Therefore, this study aimed to see their effects on keeping quality and vase-life of the cut flowers. A control (deionized water) and a standard preservative were also included in the experiment. The results showed that all treatments had improved the keeping quality and vase-life of the cut flowers comparing to control ones. Among all these treatments, the 8-HQS combined with 2% sucrose showed the best water uptake, water balance, percentage of maximum increase in fresh weight of the cut flower stems and vase-life which was extended up to 17 days. Moreover, this keeping solution retarded the chlorophyll as well as carbohydrate degradation. However, anthocyanin concentrations were increased by treatments with sucrose alone or STS followed by sucrose during the postharvest life. It has been concluded that 200 ppm 8-HQS combined with 2% sucrose solution has the potential to be used as a commercial cut flower preservative solution to delay flower senescence, enhance post harvest quality and prolong the vase-life of sweet pea cut flowers.  相似文献

Talh trees (Acacia gerrardii Benth.) are acacias that are native to the arid and semiarid Africa and west Asia. We investigated the flowering biology, pod set and flower visitors of Talh and discussed the role of these visitors in pollen transfer. The Talh trees blossomed laterally on the nodes of one-year-old twigs. Each node produced 21 flower buds seasonally. Each flower bud opened to a flower head (FH) of 60 florets. The bagged FHs podded significantly (p  0.05) less than did the unbagged FHs. The FHs were visited by 31 insect species (25 genera, 16 families and 5 orders). The major taxa were honeybees, megachilids, butterflies, ants, beetles and thrips. Each of honeybees, megachilids and beetles showed a significant (p  0.05) hourly pattern, while each of butterflies, ants and thrips had no hourly pattern (p > 0.05). Furthermore, some birds and mammals touched the Talh FHs. Talh trees evolved a mass flowering behavior to face pre- and post-flowering obstacles. Megachilids seemed to play the major effort of zoophily because of their relatively high numbers of individuals and species and their effective movement behavior on the FH surface. Nevertheless, honeybees and other insects and vertebrate taxa also contributed to the pollen transfer. These results greatly contribute to our understanding of the pollination ecology of acacias, especially Arabian acacias.  相似文献

Western flower thrips (WFT), Franklinella occidentalis, is a major pest of ornamentals. Mycotized millet grains with entomopathogenic fungi applied to soil of potted marigold plants were tested to target the soil-dwelling stages of thrips. Two experimental fungal isolates, (Beauveria bassiana [ARS7060] and Metarhizium anisopliae [ERL1171]), were compared with the registered B. bassiana strain GHA [commercialized as BotaniGard®] and untreated controls in greenhouse caged trials. Mycotized millet grains were mixed into the upper surface of the potting soil in pots of flowering ‘Hero Yellow’ marigolds (4 g/pot). One week after application five mated WFT females were released onto each plant (four plants per cage). At 8 weeks post-infestation, the mean total number of thrips per plant was 81% and 90% less in the ERL1171 and ARS 7060 treatments, respectively, than in the control. The mean numbers of thrips per plant for the control and GHA treatments were not significantly different. Plant damage was 60% less on plants treated with the experimental fungi than the control and GHA treatments. At 10 weeks post-application, 75–90% of WFT collected from the treatments of the experimental fungi were infected with the fungal species applied. These results demonstrate that soil applications of entomopathogenic fungi can reduce WFT populations significantly and prevent major damage.  相似文献

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) with average chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of 70,000 and 30,000 mg/L, respectively, can cause serious environmental hazards if discharged untreated. There are conventional palm oil mill effluent (POME) treatment systems that require large footprint, long HRT and fail to meet the Malaysian Department of Environment (DOE) discharge limit. Hence, the current research is aimed to design a novel integrated anaerobic–aerobic bioreactor (IAAB) for POME treatment in order to overcome these shortcomings of the conventional system. IAAB is a new bioreactor configuration which integrates anaerobic and aerobic digestion in one reactor. The overall removal efficiencies in steady state condition in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) were more than 99% at the organic loading rate (OLR) of 10.5 g COD/L day with methane yield of 0.24 L CH4/g COD removed. The effluent quality remained stable (BOD < 70 mg/L) and complied with the discharge limit (BOD < 100 mg/L). Overall, the IAAB system exhibited good stability and pH adjustment was unnecessary. The results show that the IAAB achieves higher performance in terms of organic removal efficiency and methane yield at higher OLR and shorter HRT as compared to the conventional system. Further evaluations of its long-term performance are proposed for the subsequent study.  相似文献

An integrated winemaking process – including sequential alcoholic and malolactic fermentations operated continuously – was developed. For the continuous alcoholic fermentation, yeast cells (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were immobilized either on grape stems or on grape skins, while bacterial cells (Oenococcus oeni) used for conducting continuous malolactic fermentation were immobilized on grape skins only. The produced wines were subjected to chemical analysis by HPLC (ethanol, glycerol, sugars and organic acids) and by gas chromatography (major and minor volatile compounds). The final proposed integrated continuous process permitted the production of 960 mL/d of a dry white wine, with an alcoholic strength of about 13 vol%, by using two 1.5 L tower bed reactors packed with 260 g of grape skins. The produced wines revealed a good physicochemical quality. Moreover, 67% of the malic acid concentration could be reduced in the second reactor. Both fermentative processes proved to be much more efficient than those conducted traditionally with free cells or even with immobilized cells, but in the batch mode of operation.  相似文献

Prevention of ethylene- and shipping-induced flower abscission is necessary to maintain the quality of both cut flowers and potted plants during handling, transport and retail display. The aims of the present work were to determine the sensitivity of Plectranthus cultivars to applied ethylene, to alleviate ethylene- and shipping-induced flower abscission in intact potted plants using 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), and to investigate the possible causes of dark-induced flower abscission. All cultivars were sensitive to ethylene in a concentration-dependent manner, and complete abscission occurred within 24 h with 1 and 2 μl l 1 ethylene. Unopened buds were more sensitive to applied ethylene, and exhibited greater abscission than open flowers. Ethylene synthesis remained below detection limits at all time points under control and continuous dark conditions. Dark treatment significantly increased flower abscission in Plectranthus cultivars, and like ethylene-induced flower abscission, this could be prevented by continuous 1-MCP treatment. Gene expression of ethylene biosynthetic enzymes ACS and ACO was examined as possible causes for the accelerated flower abscission observed in plants kept in continuous darkness. Expression patterns of ACS and ACO varied between different cultivars of Plectranthus. In some cases, increased expression of ACS and ACO led to increased flower abscission. Gene expression was higher in open flowers when compared to unopened flowers suggesting a cause for the observed preferential shedding of open flowers in some cultivars. Although the cause of dark-induced abscission in Plectranthus remains elusive, it can be effectively controlled by treatment with 1-MCP.  相似文献

Laboratory scale research on the effects of operating parameters, including mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) concentration, volumetric exchange rate (VER), aeration time, temperature and daily operation cycle on biological treatment of the pulp and paper mill effluent was studied using four 4 l sequencing batch reactors (SBR). The results revealed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency was up to 93.1 ± 0.3% and the volumetric loading reached 1.9 kg BOD m−3 day−1 under optimal operating conditions. The treatment performance of organic removal by the SBR system remained stable during the operation. The effluent quality was satisfied with the discharge standard set by the local authority and the filamentous bulking problem was solved. At the same time, the sludge settleability, in terms of sludge volume index (SVI), was improved to the healthy level (SVI = 52.7 ± 1.3 ml g−1).  相似文献

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) was used to monitor continuously and simultaneously the concentrations of dissolved gases (O2, CO2, CH4) within the treatment bed of a willow vegetation filter treating leachate at a landfill site in mid Wales. The distribution of dissolved gasses within the bed was shown to be highly heterogeneous at the small spatial scale with considerable variation between vertical profiles measured simultaneously at different locations. In general, aerobic conditions were observed above the water table with reduced levels of oxygen and increasing levels of carbon dioxide and methane below it. Distinct pockets of oxygen (up to 200 μM) were observed in anaerobic zones and pockets of reduced oxygen and elevated carbon dioxide were observed in the aerobic zone. Pockets of methane were observed in some profiles coexisting with up to 200 μM oxygen at 5 cm depth. These observations confirm the hypothesis that micro-sites exists within the soil/root matrix where aerobic organic matter decomposition and anaerobic processes such as methanogenesis can occur in relatively close proximity to each other. We hypothesise that the distribution of dissolved gases is determined by rapid diffusion of air maintaining aerobic conditions above the water table, removal of oxygen by microbial processes creating anaerobic conditions below the water table and the distribution of willow roots in the soil which create local aerobic zones by oxygen release.  相似文献

Recovery ability in relation to carbohydrate content of Potamogeton maackianus growing in two dissolved oxygen concentrations (8 and 2 mg L−1) was investigated during 28 days exposure to very low irradiance (about 0.06 μmol m−2 s−1). Plant weight remained relatively constant (0.19 g dry wt plant−1) within the initial 21 days in the high oxygen treatment, but decreased to 0.14 g dry wt plant−1 at the end of the experiment. In low oxygen environments, plant weight was similar within the initial 14 days, but decreased to 0.08 g dry wt plant−1 at 21 day. During the experimental period, both soluble sugar and starch contents in shoots decreased with time. Compared to high oxygen treatment, plants in the low oxygen treatment depleted starch more quickly (25 versus 18 mg g−1 at 28 day) but remained a relatively high soluble sugar content (0.9 versus 1.8 mg g−1 at 28 day). After recovery in high light and high dissolved oxygen conditions for 1 week, plant growth rate, new branch number, stem elongation rate and leaf recruitment number were significantly higher in high oxygen than in the low oxygen treatments. These data suggest that the ability of the plant to recover from prolonged exposure to very low irradiance is related to the depletion level of carbohydrate stored in plant tissues, which is regulated by oxygen availability in the water.  相似文献

The effect of diet complexity on coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) and growth performance was studied in piglets from 21 to 62 d of age. There were five experimental prestarter diets (21–41 d of age) with similar net energy and total indispensable amino acids content. The negative control diet contained 400 g raw maize, 40 g fish meal (FM) and 70 g lactose (LAC)/kg and the positive control diet contained 400 g cooked maize, 100 g FM and 140 g LAC/kg. The other three diets were similar to the positive control diet but the cooked maize was substituted by raw maize or contained 40 g FM/kg or 70 g LAC/kg, respectively. Each treatment was replicated six times (six pigs per pen). For the starter period (42–62 d of age), half of the pens of each of the prestarter treatments was sorted into two groups and fed either a standard soybean meal–raw maize–lard diet or a diet with similar nutrient profile that included 200 g cooked maize, 50 g FM, 13 g LAC, 20 g soy protein concentrate and 10 g soybean oil/kg in substitution of lower cost ingredients. Dietary treatment did not affect piglet performance at any age, but incidence of diarrhoea during the prestarter period, was higher in piglets fed the negative control diet than in piglets fed any of the other diets (P<0.05). At 30 d of age (prestarter period), the CTTAD of organic matter and gross energy were lower (P<0.001) for pigs fed the negative control diet than for pigs fed the other diets, but that of crude protein was not affected. At 50 d of age (starter period), dietary treatment did not affect the CTTAD of any dietary component. It is concluded that the use of high levels of high quality ingredients in the diet did not improve growth performance of piglets at any age. From 21 to 41 d of age, the incidence of diarrhoea was reduced and the CTTAD of dietary components was increased when the more complex diets were fed. The inclusion of high levels of high quality ingredients in the diet to maximize performance of young pigs might not be justified under all circumstances.  相似文献

Ethyl formate (EF) in combination with CO2 was tested for control of arthropods commonly infesting California table grapes. In addition, table grape tolerance to EF exposure was evaluated. LC99 estimates were developed for target pests by using a range of EF concentrations (0.04-4.7% EF). Response to treatments varied greatly between species, as well as life stages within species. Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and adult and crawler stages of grape mealybug, Pseudococcus maritimus (Ehrhorn), were most susceptible to EF treatments. Least susceptible were grape mealybug eggs; Pacific spider mite, Tetranychus pacificus McGregor; and omnivorous leafroller, Platynota stultana Walsingham. The LC99 for target pests fell within the range of EF concentrations tolerated by table grapes with the exception of 1-, 3-, and 5-d-old omnivorous leafroller pupae.  相似文献

Constructed treatment wetlands have served the City of Columbia, MO, for fourteen years. Four free water surface wetland units in series, comprised of 23 cells, are an addition to the activated sludge wastewater treatment plant, for the purpose of added biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) control. The system operates year-round, and supplies water to the Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area for wetland maintenance. The cattail wetlands processed an average of 57,000 m3/d, at a water depth of 20 cm. The resulting detention time was approximately 2 days, and the hydraulic loading was 13 cm/d. Water temperatures were warm leaving the treatment plant and in the wetlands in winter, because of the short detention. The period of record average carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD) leaving the wetlands was 5.0 mg/L, and the TSS was 14.7 mg/L. Dissolved oxygen was depressed in summer, likely because of the high sediment demand. Nutrient concentrations were only minimally reduced, total nitrogen (TN) by 22% and total phosphorus (TP) by 6%. However, load reductions were maximal, 98 t/yr for nitrogen, and 3.6 t/yr for phosphorus. Fecal coliforms were reduced by 98%, and E. coli by 95%. First order rate coefficients were high for CBOD (64 m/yr), nitrate (61 m/yr) and organic nitrogen (42 m/yr), but relatively low for ammonia (8 m/yr) and phosphorus (5.7 m/yr). Nitrogen removal was strongly affected by vegetative uptake. Sediment accretion in the wetland inlets was substantial, at 1.6 cm/yr in the inlets to the upstream wetland units. Muskrats caused vegetation damage, and waterfowl use was high in winter, causing TSS excursions.  相似文献

The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) and water table draw-down on soil carbon sequestration in an ombrotrophic bog ecosystem were examined. Peat monoliths (11 cm diameter, 25 cm deep) with intact bog vegetation were exposed to ambient or elevated (ambient + 200 mg l?1) atmospheric CO2, combined with a natural water table (level with the peat surface) or a water table draw-down (?5 cm). Eight observations per treatment were included in the study, which was conducted over a 12 week period. Concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), phenolic compounds and the fluxes of CO2 and CH4 were measured. The eCO2 treatment caused an increase in the CH4 and CO2 fluxes and a small decrease in both the DOC and phenolic concentrations. The water table draw-down invoked decreases in phenolic and DOC concentrations, a decrease in CH4 flux and a small increase in CO2 flux. The combined (eCO2 + water table draw-down) treatment caused a larger than expected CH4 flux decrease and CO2 flux increase and an increase in DOC concentration. Our results suggest very different effects on the system dependent on the treatment applied. The draw-down treatment principally increased oxidation of the rhizosphere resulting in increased decomposition and as such a removal of material from the dissolved carbon pool. The data also suggest labile carbon availability may be limiting the rate of decomposition and so slowing inorganic nutrient and carbon pool turn-over. The elevated CO2 addressed the labile-carbon limitation. Under the environment of the combined treatment, these limitations were effectively removed, culminating in a destabilisation of the carbon-sequestering environment to a weaker sink (or even a source) of atmospheric carbon.  相似文献

Constructed treatment wetlands (CTWs) have been used effectively to treat a range of wastewaters and non-point sources contaminated with nitrogen (N). But documented long-term case studies of CTWs treating dilute nitrate-dominated agricultural runoff are limited. This study presents an analysis of four years of water quality data for a 1.6-ha surface-flow CTW treating irrigation return flows in Yakima Basin in central Washington. The CTW consisted of a sedimentation basin followed by two surface-flow wetlands in parallel, each with three cells. Inflow typically contained 1–3 mg-N/L nitrate and <0.4 mg-N/L total Kjeldahl N (TKN). Hydraulic loading was fairly constant, ranging from around 125 cm/d in the sedimentation basin to 12 cm/d in the treatment wetlands. Concentration removal efficiencies for nitrate averaged 34% in the sedimentation basin and 90–93% in the treatment wetlands. Total N removal efficiencies averaged 21% and 57–63% in the sedimentation basin and treatment wetlands, respectively. Area-based first-order removal rate constants for nitrate in the wetlands averaged 142–149 m/yr. Areal removal rates for nitrate in treatment wetlands averaged 139–146 mg-N/m2/d. Outflow from the CTW typically contained <0.1 mg-N/L nitrate and <0.6 mg-N/L TKN. Rates of nitrate loss in wetlands were highly seasonal, generally peaking in the summer months (June–August). Nitrate loss rates also correlated significantly with water temperature (positively) and dissolved oxygen (negatively). Based on the modified Arrhenius relationship, θ for nitrate loss in the wetlands was 1.05–1.09. The CTW also significantly affected temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration in waters flowing through the system. On average, the sedimentation basin caused an increase in temperature (+1.7 °C) and dissolved oxygen (+1.5 mg/L); in contrast the wetlands caused a decrease in temperature (?1.6 °C) and dissolved oxygen (?5.0 mg/L). Results show that CTWs with surface-flow wetlands can be extremely effective at polishing dilute non-point sources, particularly in semi-arid environments where warm temperatures and low oxygen levels in treatment wetland water promote biological denitrification.  相似文献

Recent advances in peatland restoration techniques have succeeded in establishing Sphagnum moss on the remnant cutover peat surface following peat extraction; however, evaluating restoration success remains a key issue. We argue that a Sphagnum-dominated peatland can only be considered functionally ‘restored’ once organic matter accumulation has achieved a thickness where the mean water table position in a drought year does not extend into the underlying formerly cutover peat surface. Here we monitor the spatio-temporal development of organic matter accumulation in a new peat layer for the first 8 years following the restoration of a Québec peatland and couple a simple acrotelm carbon accumulation model and ecohydrological model to assess peatland restoration success.We determined that organic matter accumulation increased from 2.3 ± 1.7 cm 4 years post-restoration to 13.6 ± 6.5 cm 8 years post-restoration. For comparison, at an adjacent non-restored section of the peatland organic matter accumulation was significantly lower (p < 0.001 for all years), with mean thicknesses of 0.2 ± 0.6 and 0.8 ± 1.2 cm for 24 and 28 years post-extraction, respectively. Given the mean summer water deficit at the site (?64 mm), our ecohydrological modeling results suggest that a 19-cm-thick moss layer would be required to offset the water table decrease induced by the summer water deficit. Given the current rate of organic matter accumulation, net primary productivity and the new peat layer decomposition rates determined using litter bags, we estimate it will take 17 years post-restoration to accumulate a 19-cm moss layer. Consequently, we argue that successful peatland restoration may be achieved in the medium-term and that our simple modeling approach can be useful in assessing the long-term impact of restoration on atmospheric carbon dioxide sequestration.  相似文献

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the ciliated protozoan population density and the effluent quality at two different modes of activated sludge plants (ASP) operating in India. A wide variety of ciliated protozoa (26 sp.) in higher density were identified at the conventional ASP, Haridwar, that delivered high quality effluent in terms of low biochemical oxygen demand (BOD = 15 mg/L), suspended solids (SS = 17 mg/L), turbidity (2.7 NTU), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3–N = 3 mg/L), chemical oxygen demand (COD = 37 mg/L), total coliforms (TC = log 5.2), fecal coliforms (FC = log 4.7) and fecal Streptococci (FS = log 3.7). Whereas, a few protozoan species (15 sp.) in lower density were reported in extended aeration plant (EAP) Delhi, that delivered turbid and lower quality effluent in terms of high BOD (23 mg/L), SS (80 mg/L), turbidity (12 NTU), NH3–N (55 mg/L) and COD (68 mg/L). However, in spite of relatively poor effluent quality, lower concentration of TC (log 4.2), FC (log 3.9) and FS (log 3.2) was observed in EAP, Delhi. The constant presence of two filamentous bacterial species (Beggiatoa and Spirillum) in extended aeration process can be considered as the probable reason of high coliforms removal, since filamentous bacteria are capable of removing organic as well as microbial pollutants from wastewater.  相似文献
