1. When using benthic macroinvertebrate communities for bioassessment, temporal variation may influence judgement as to whether or not a site is degraded.
2. In a survey of sixteen reference and sixteen test sites in the upper Thames River catchment area (UTRCA) in south-western Ontario, Canada, consistent differences between summer and winter samples were found for taxon richness (increase; P = 0.06) and the Family Biotic Index (decrease; P = 0.11). A bioassessment based on these results would indicate better water quality in the same streams in winter relative to summer. No consistent pattern of seasonal difference was detected for Simpson's Diversity and Equitability, or percentage Dominant Taxon.
3. The Reference Condition Approach to bioassessment uses predictive modelling to explain variation in reference communities with the environmental conditions at these sites as predictors. The community at a test site is compared with that predicted by the model. Several predictive models were constructed using simple geographic and habitat characteristics (i.e. catchment area, distance to source, stream width, substrate and habitat diversity) as predictors. By including season of sampling in the models, we increased their predictive power and the ability of the bioassessment to detect degradation. The best results were achieved when separate predictive models were built for each sampling season.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of benthic algae and macroinvertebrates were examined along a natural thermal gradient formed by hot springs in Little Geysers Creek, Sonoma Co., California, USA. Maximum water temperatures ranged from 52 °C at the uppermost station to 23 °C at a station 400 m downstream. Benthic chlorophyll a decreased exponentially from 2.5 g m–2 at 52 °C to less than 0.1 g m–2 at 23 °C, a pattern of decline also exhibited by algal phaeophytin. Blue-green algae dominated at higher temperatures but were replaced by filamentous green algae and diatoms at lower temperatures.Macroinvertebrates were absent at temperatures 45 °C; the highest density (> 150 000 m–2, mainly Chironomidae) occurred at 34 °C, whereas biomass was highest (4.6 g m–2, as dry weight) at 23 °C and species richness (15 species) was highest at 27 °C. The two predominant macroinvertebrate populations (the midge Tanytarsus sp. and the caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis) occurred at sites that were several degrees below their lethal thermal threshold, suggesting that a temperature buffer is maintained.  相似文献

From December 1996 to August 1997, beech litter breakdown and stream benthic macroinvertebrate communities were investigated to assess the effects of acidic precipitation on community structure and function in two second-order headwater streams of the Vosges Mountains (NE France). Because of microscale changes in bedrock mineral composition, one of the streams was acidified (mean pH=4.53, mean total Al=421 g.l-1) and the other circum-neutral (mean pH=7.23, mean total Al=36 g.l-1). Results showed that both litter breakdown rate and macroinvertebrate community structure were drastically affected under acidic conditions. The rate of leaf litter breakdown decreased by nine times in the acidic stream. Benthic sampling showed that scrapers were totally eradicated and both gathering and filtering collectors were drastically reduced. Such drastic effects appear to be the consequences of the toxicity of acid water including both proton and aluminum toxicity. A decrease in shredder abundance and a shift from the efficient acid-sensitive Amphipoda Gammarus fossarum to acid-tolerant Nemouroidea (mainly Leuctra sp.) was observed in the acidic stream. Our results indicate that freshwater acidification significantly alters the action of shredders processing leaf litter in the acidic stream. Consequently, interactions between structural and functional responses to acidification probably have profound consequences on the efficiency of acidified stream ecosystems, which in return may alter downstream functioning.  相似文献

Small headwater streams constitute a large proportion of the river channel network in many parts of the world. In this study, two multihabitat kick sampling methods (60-second and 20-second) were compared across 10 small headwater streams in the southwest and east of Ireland in spring and summer 2009 to determine the influence of sampling on various benthic macroinvertebrates in headwater streams. The performance of each method, over time and replication, was examined using a range of benthic macroinvertebrate metrics, as well as the community composition and structure recorded by both methods. The ability to recruit taxa, as well as the field sampling and laboratory processing effort required for each method, was also assessed. Results indicated that both kick sampling methods generally recorded similar metric scores with the exception of taxonomic richness (t = 180 s and n = 9 replicates test) where the 20-second kicks consistently out preformed those calculated for the 60-second kicks. All other metrics compared generally performed equally as well regardless of the method used. Multivariate analysis of macroinvertebrate community assemblage, using SIMPROF, RELATE and CS-SMC analyses, further highlighted the high similarity in the macroinvertebrate assemblage recorded between both methods. Finally, the 20-second kicks recruited taxa as efficiently as 60-second kicks samples so long as replication was equal but required less sampling effort (NSE) and processing time. Therefore, the shorter 20-second kicks can be used to assess the ecological health of headwater streams, provided that adequate replication is adopted, resulting in significant effort, cost and time savings.  相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis was used to examine the food sources and trophic structure of 17 fish species and six groups of benthic macroinvertebrates in a seagrass meadow in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The seagrass, their associated epiphytes, sediment organic matter (SOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) were identified to be the food sources, with δ13C values ranging from ?19.49 (POM) to ?9.66‰ (seagrass). The δ13C of the 23 fauna taxa were between ?18.57 (Arothron manilensis) and ?11.62‰ (Protoreaster sp.). For five of the six groups of benthic macroinvertebrates, seagrass and their epiphytes contributed more than 69.4%. For 14 of the 17 fish species, seagrass and their epiphytes are the main contributors. For 15 of the 17 fishes, the trophic levels inferred from SIA are lower than those from the previously reported diet composition analysis. These findings show that seagrass and their epiphytes are consumed by most of the fish and benthic macroinvertebrates, and are important for a large portion of the food web in seagrass meadows in the Coral Triangle area.  相似文献

1. Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of riparian buffers in the tropics, despite their potential to reduce the impacts of deforestation on stream communities. We examined macroinvertebrate assemblages and stream habitat characteristics in small lowland streams in southeastern Costa Rica to assess the impacts of deforestation on benthic communities and the influence of riparian forest buffers on these effects. Three different stream reach types were compared in the study: (i) forested reference reaches, (ii) stream reaches adjacent to pasture with a riparian forest buffer at least 15 m in width on both banks and (iii) stream reaches adjacent to pasture without a riparian forest buffer. 2. Comparisons between forest and pasture reaches suggest that deforestation, even at a very local scale, can alter the taxonomic composition of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, reduce macroinvertebrate diversity and eliminate the most sensitive taxa. The presence of a riparian forest buffer appeared to significantly reduce the effects of deforestation on benthic communities, as macroinvertebrate diversity and assemblage structure in forest buffer reaches were generally very similar to those in forested reference reaches. One forest buffer reach was clearly an exception to this pattern, despite the presence of a wide riparian buffer. 3. The taxonomic structure of macroinvertebrate assemblages differed between pool and riffle habitats, but contrasts among the three reach types in our study were consistent across the two habitats. Differences among reach types also persisted across three sampling periods during our 15‐month study. 4. Among the environmental variables we measured, only stream water temperature varied significantly among reach types, but trends in periphyton abundance and stream sedimentation may have contributed to observed differences in macroinvertebrate assemblage structure. 5. Forest cover was high in all of our study catchments, and more research is needed to determine whether riparian forest buffers will sustain similar functions in more extensively deforested landscapes. Nevertheless, our results provide support for Costa Rican regulations protecting riparian forests and suggest that proper riparian management could significantly reduce the impacts of deforestation on benthic communities in tropical streams.  相似文献

长白山森林源头溪流每年11月至次年4月有约70%的河面被冰覆盖,季节性冻融过程特征明显.为了揭示溪流冻结初期凋落叶分解与底栖动物定殖的关系,在长白山地区1条源头溪流中,利用2种孔径(5和0.3 mm)的尼龙分解袋对色木槭、紫椴、蒙古栎的单一及混合凋落叶进行了为期35 d的分解研究.结果表明: 凋落叶质量损失率在单一树种间差异显著,表现为:色木槭>紫椴>蒙古栎,而在4种混合凋落叶间差异不显著;除紫椴和3树种混合凋落叶外,粗、细分解袋间凋落叶质量损失率差异不显著;凋落叶混合效应仅出现在紫椴-蒙古栎混合的粗分解袋内;定殖在不同凋落叶分解袋内的底栖动物群落结构差异较大,但撕食者密度在3种凋落叶间差异不显著,撕食者对凋落叶混合效应的响应也不显著.由结果可知,溪流冻结初期微生物是凋落叶的主要分解者,底栖动物的贡献率较低.虽然撕食者密度较低,但撕食者的活动是凋落叶混合效应出现的必要条件.底栖动物对食物和栖息地有一定的选择性,但由于定殖时间较短,凋落叶对撕食者定殖的影响不显著.本研究对源头溪流生态系统的冬季生态过程研究及生态系统管理具有一定的理论意义.  相似文献

  1. In the European Alps, due to the current changes in land use driven by different social and economic factors, grasslands and pastures are being increasingly replaced by forests. Whereas many studies have focused on the impacts of urbanisation and intensive agricultural activities, no study has evaluated the effects of changes among types of natural to semi-natural land cover in the Alps with a focus on lotic environments.
  2. Here, combining taxonomic and functional approaches, we show the effects of four different alpine land cover types (rocks, grasslands, coniferous forests, valley bottom pastures) on stream benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Irrespective of elevation, grasslands and pastures exhibited unpredicted similarity in terms of the composition of the macroinvertebrate assemblages and hosted the highest diversity of benthic organisms, whereas in each of the other land cover types, the density and diversity of the faunal assemblages showed distinct and characteristic values.
  3. When analysing the functional diversity decomposed to richness, evenness, and divergence components, grasslands and pastures again showed a similar trend, being characterised by high levels of resource exploitation and niche differentiation, with the potential to host additional organisms. However, as expected, differences driven by land cover type and elevation emerged when examining the single functional traits, since elevation played a major role in terms of the distribution of traits conferring resistance and resilience.
  4. Our results demonstrate that land cover type is a prominent factor influencing the taxonomic and functional variety of stream benthic macroinvertebrate communities. Moreover, alpine grasslands contained an unexpected diversity of aquatic insects, as previously assessed for other organisms (e.g. plants and snails). Overall, our study highlights the importance of the preservation of the diversity of habitats in the alpine region, with a special focus needed for valuable semi-natural landscapes, such as grasslands and pastures, particularly in a time of increasing intensification and abandonment of lands in the alpine context.

1. A headwater stream (C54) was treated seasonally (twelve times from December 1985 to October 1988) with the insecticide methoxychlor for 3 years, resulting in 72 and 75% reductions of insect abundances and biomass, respectively. Following treatment, monthly benthic abundances and biomass were measured in the treated stream and a nearby reference stream (C55) in order to assess recovery. Seasonal average abundances and biomass were calculated from samples taken from December 1988—December 1989, the first post-treatment year of C54. 2. Non-insect abundances and biomass were higher in the recovering stream during the winter + spring and summer periods, but were similar to the reference stream by autumn. Abundances and biomass of collector-filterers, scrapers, and shredders were all lower in the recovering stream during winter + spring; however filterers and scrapers were similar to reference stream values by the end of the recovery year. No distinct differences were seen between collector-gatherers and predators throughout the year. 3. Univoltine and multivoltine taxa, along with treatment-resistant taxa, were the most important contributors to recovery of C54. Taxa with longer generation times, life histories which were more vulnerable to riming of treatments, and/or poor dispersal abilities were poorly represented during first-year recovery. 4. Abundance data alone were not sufficient for a complete analysis of recovery. Biomass estimates reflected differences in taxonomic composition and developmental stages between streams after 1 year of recovery.  相似文献

Field experiments investigated the possible active entry of stream benthos into the water column. Over a 1-year period, sediment baskets were suspended for 24 hours in a stream pool so that only swimming or floating organisms, essentially unaided by current, could colonize them. A variety of benthos, including taxa characteristic of riffles, colonized the baskets, with colonization highest in late summer and negligible in winter.A modified drift net towed through the pool was used to quantitatively sample benthic animals actually in the water column. Nighttime tows captured a diverse, abundant fauna and indicated densities substantially higher than invertebrate drift densities reported in the literature. Daytime tows yielded little. Estimated percentages of the benthos in the water column at a given time were generally < 1.0%.These findings suggest that not all invertebrate drift is the result of passive mechanical removal from the substrate by current.  相似文献

Bacterial communities associated with a variety of benthic detritus types were studied in three streams in the context of the chemical characteristics of the sediment material and the stream water. A cell purification assay was developed for a quantitative microscopic evaluation of bacterial community structure in detritus samples by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The efficiency of FISH with fluorescently monolabelled probes was compared with FISH with signal amplification by catalysed reporter deposition (CARD-FISH). In detritus types poor in organic carbon and nitrogen, the numbers of prokaryotes were related to the chemical characteristics of the stream water column, whereas no such relationship was found for detritus types rich in organic carbon and nitrogen. These results might help to provide criteria for the selection of detritus types for river ecosystem assessment and monitoring. The percentage of bacteria detected by FISH with monolabelled probes was correlated with the detritus total organic matter (OM). This is likely attributed to a higher ribosome content of microbial cells on substrates rich in OM. Cell detection by CARD-FISH did not show any correlation with OM content, indicating that this technique renders the results more independent from the activity state of cells. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with four group-specific probes suggested a relationship between substrate quality and the composition of the microbial assemblages on the various types of detritus. The improved protocol for cell purification and CARD-FISH may facilitate future investigations on the relationship between the riverine benthic detritus quality and microbial community composition.  相似文献

We studied streams in a rural landscape mosaic of the upper Mara River basin (Mau Forest, Kenya), where native forest has been converted to land uses dominated by various kinds of farming, agriculture and rural human settlements. We investigated scale-dependent effects of these anthropogenic rural activities on macroinvertebrates and physico-chemical variables by separately testing for effects of reach-scale disturbance and catchment-scale land use. Physico-chemical variables like conductivity, turbidity and total suspended solids reacted equally well to reach-scale disturbance and catchment-scale land use, demonstrating the high spatial integration potential of these variables and calling for farsighted large-scale water resource management. In contrast, macroinvertebrates reacted more sensitively at the reach-scale than at the catchment-scale, suggesting a stronger influence of local habitat conditions. These results highlight the importance of local stream ecosystem management, e.g., the restoration and protection of stream banks, to protect against agriculture-driven biodiversity losses. However, we also found responses of selected taxa to catchment-scale land use, suggesting that localized management efforts may not suffice to maintain full stream ecosystem integrity and regional biodiversity. Our results also suggest that macroinvertebrates may allow a scale-specific assessment of stream ecosystem integrity and pressures by a scale-dependent bioindicatory approach.  相似文献

1. Single‐station diel oxygen curves were used to monitor the oxygen metabolism of an intermittent, forested third‐order stream (Fuirosos) in the Mediterranean area, over a period of 22 months. Ecosystem respiration (ER) and gross primary production (GPP) were estimated and related to organic matter inputs and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in order to understand the effect of the riparian forest on stream metabolism. 2. Annual ER was 1690 g O2 m?2 year?1 and annual GPP was 275 g O2 m?2 year?1. Fuirosos was therefore a heterotrophic stream, with P : R ratios averaging 0.16. 3. GPP rates were relatively low, ranging from 0.05 to 1.9 g O2 m?2 day?1. The maximum values of GPP occurred during a few weeks in spring, and ended when the riparian canopy was fully closed. The phenology of the riparian vegetation was an important determinant of light availability, and consequently, of GPP. 4. On a daily scale, light and temperature were the most important factors governing the shape of photosynthesis–irradiance (P–I) curves. Several patterns could be generalised in the P–I relationships. Hysteresis‐type curves were characteristic of late autumn and winter. Light saturation responses (that occurred at irradiances higher than 90 μE m?2 s?1) were characteristic of early spring. Linear responses occurred during late spring, summer and early autumn when there was no evidence of light saturation. 5. Rates of ER were high when compared with analogous streams, ranging from 0.4 to 32 g O2 m?2 day?1. ER was highest in autumn 2001, when organic matter accumulations on the streambed were extremely high. By contrast, the higher discharge in autumn 2002 prevented these accumulations and caused lower ER. The Mediterranean climate, and in its effect the hydrological regime, were mainly responsible for the temporal variation in benthic organic matter, and consequently of ER.  相似文献

Intensification of permafrost thaw has increased the frequency and magnitude of large permafrost slope disturbances (mega slumps) in glaciated terrain of northwestern Canada. Individual thermokarst disturbances up to 40 ha in area have made large volumes of previously frozen sediments available for leaching and transport to adjacent streams, significantly increasing sediment and solute loads in these systems. To test the effects of this climate‐sensitive disturbance regime on the ecology of Arctic streams, we explored the relationship between physical and chemical variables and benthic macroinvertebrate communities in disturbed and undisturbed stream reaches in the Peel Plateau, Northwest Territories, Canada. Highly disturbed and undisturbed stream reaches differed with respect to taxonomic composition and invertebrate abundance. Minimally disturbed reaches were not differentiated by these variables but rather were distributed along a disturbance gradient between highly disturbed and undisturbed sites. In particular, there was evidence of a strong negative relationship between macroinvertebrate abundance and total suspended solids, and a positive relationship between abundance and the distance from the disturbance. Increases in both sediments and nutrients appear to be the proximate cause of community differences in highly disturbed streams. Declines in macroinvertebrate abundance in response to slump activity have implications for the food webs of these systems, potentially leading to negative impacts on higher trophic levels, such as fish. Furthermore, the disturbance impacts on stream health can be expected to intensify as climate change increases the frequency and magnitude of thermokarst.  相似文献

Flow disturbances and conversions of land‐use types are two major factors that influence river ecosystems. However, few studies have considered their interactions and separated their individual effects on aquatic organisms. Using monthly monitoring data from two streams with different land‐use types (i.e. forest and agriculture) in the subtropical Central China over three years, we accurately predicted the changes of macroinvertebrate communities under flood disturbances and land‐use type conversions. The dominant taxa and main community metrics significantly declined following flash floods. Several mayflies and chironomid had rapid rates of recovery, which could reach high abundance in three months after floods. And most of the community metrics recovered more rapidly in the forested river than that in the agricultural river. Stepwise multiple regression (SMR) models were used to investigate the relationships between biotic metrics and hydrological and temporal variables. For example, SMR revealed that floods reduced the stability of benthic communities, and the length of low flow period was of considerable importance to the recovery of the fauna. Two‐way ANOVA indicated that intra‐annual fluctuation had more (e.g. the total abundance and wet biomass), equal (e.g. total richness, EPT richness, percent EPT abundance, and Margalef index), or less (e.g. tolerant value) influence on macroinvertebrate communities than land‐use types. Consequently, the effects of floods on macroinvertebrates should be taken into account when macroinvertebrates are used as indicators for assessing river ecosystem. The important contribution of terrestrial invertebrates to the energy budget of drift-foraging fishes has been well documented in many forested headwater streams. However, relatively little attention has been focused on the behavioral mechanisms behind such intensive exploitation. We tested for the hypothesis that active prey selection by fishes would be an important determinant of terrestrial invertebrates contribution to fish diets in a forested headwater stream in northern Japan. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were estimated to consume 57.12 mg m–2 day–1 (dry mass) terrestrial invertebrates, 77% of their total input (73.89 mg m–2 day–1), there being high selectivity for the former from stream drift. Both the falling input and drift of terrestrial invertebrates peaked at around dusk, decreasing dramatically toward midnight. In contrast, both aquatic insect adults and benthic invertebrates showed pronounced nocturnal drift. Because the prey consumption rates of rainbow trout were high at dawn and dusk, decreasing around midnight, the greater contribution of terrestrial invertebrates to trout diet was regarded as being partly influenced by the difference in diel periodicity of availability among prey categories. In addition, selectivity also depended upon differences in individual prey size among aquatic insect adults, and benthic and terrestrial invertebrates, the last category being largest in both the stream drift and the trout diets. We concluded that differences in both the timing of supplies and prey size among the three prey categories were the primary factors behind the selective foraging on terrestrial invertebrates by rainbow trout.  相似文献

凋落物分解对于维持源头溪流生态系统碳和养分平衡有重要意义。以亚热带典型源头溪流金佛山溪流为代表,选取3种河岸带常见凋落叶为分解对象,设计3个单种和4个混合物种的凋落物组合,在原位放置3种孔径的分解袋(0.05mm、0.25mm和2mm),探讨混合凋落物的性状与底栖分解类群对叶片质量损失和混合效应的影响。结果表明:(1)微生物在凋落物分解过程中相对贡献均大于50%,小型和大型底栖动物进一步加速了凋落物的分解过程。(2)单种凋落物分解速率存在显著差异:八角枫(Alangium chinense,质量损失率为53.05%)>缺萼枫香(Liquidambar acalycina,30.00%)>薄叶润楠(Machilus leptophylla,12.63%)。(3)混合凋落物中仅微生物参与的处理均表现为负的非加和效应,其中八角枫+缺萼枫香、八角枫+薄叶润楠、八角枫+缺萼枫香+薄叶润楠三个处理的效应显著;小型底栖动物加入后均表现为正的非加和效应,但不显著;在微生物、小型和大型底栖动物的共同作用下,缺萼枫香+薄叶润楠和八角枫+缺萼枫香+薄叶润楠的两个处理的正的非加和效应显著。亚热带源头溪流中凋落物分解功能与河岸植物和分解者类群的复杂性密切相关。  相似文献

Summary Seasonal and spatial patterns of benthic invertebrate abundance were examined in relation to benthic detritus in Monument Creek, an Alaskan subarctic stream. The total macroinvertebrate fauna showed a mid-summer low in abundance, increasing to seasonal highs in winter/early spring (November/May). Shredders were a small portion of the benthic fauna or leaf pack fauna in summer but increased rapidly (in biovolume) following autumnal leaf fall to dominate the fauna by early winter (October/November). Abundance was strongly correlated with quantity of detritus in the sample. Comparison of benthic macroinvertebrate densities from Alaskan streams with comparable data from temperate zone streams shows that Alaskan streams are similar to temperate zone streams in range of abundance. Each unit of benthic detritus in Monument Creek is associated with a relatively large number of small (low individual biomass) shredders compared to streams in temperate regions. Detrital resources in this subarctic stream were meager, compared to temperate streams, and appeared to strongly influence the spatial and temporal patterns of detritivores.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to predict global warming effects on benthic macroinvertebrate community structure by using a small temperate geothermal stream as a model system. We collected benthic macroinvertebrates, measured physical and chemical water properties at eight localities up the Kudo?ki stream steep water temperature gradient, and used 11 metrics and indexes to characterize community structure. Species richness and evenness decreased, but total abundance increased with the increase of average annual water temperature (t av), with species richness being most and total abundance least sensitive to this parameter. The increase of Gastropoda relative abundance and the decrease of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera richness, respectively, were the earliest responses of taxonomic groups to t av increase. Relative abundance of Orthocladiinae decreased and that of Chironomini increased with the increase of t av. This indicates that Chironomidae are not reliable predictors of global warming effects in running waters, and that lower taxonomic levels, subfamily or tribe, are more suitable for that purpose. Changes in community structure did not linearly follow t av increase, since a great community shift was observed at t av ≈ 20°C indicating that present trends of community responses to changes in climatic conditions should not be linearly extrapolated to future warming.  相似文献
