In the past decade, there have been exciting developments in the field of lithium ion batteries as energy storage devices, resulting in the application of lithium ion batteries in areas ranging from small portable electric devices to large power systems such as hybrid electric vehicles. However, the maximum energy density of current lithium ion batteries having topatactic chemistry is not sufficient to meet the demands of new markets in such areas as electric vehicles. Therefore, new electrochemical systems with higher energy densities are being sought, and metal‐air batteries with conversion chemistry are considered a promising candidate. More recently, promising electrochemical performance has driven much research interest in Li‐air and Zn‐air batteries. This review provides an overview of the fundamentals and recent progress in the area of Li‐air and Zn‐air batteries, with the aim of providing a better understanding of the new electrochemical systems.  相似文献

Pseudocapacitive materials have been highlighted as promising electrode materials to overcome slow diffusion‐limited redox mechanism in active materials, which impedes fast charging/discharging in energy storage devices. However, previously reported pseudocapacitive properties have been rarely used in lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) and evaluation methods have been limited to those focused on thin‐film‐type electrodes. Hence, a nanocage‐shaped silicon–carbon composite anode is proposed with excellent pseudocapacitive qualities for LIB applications. This composite anode exhibits a superior rate capability compared to other Si‐based anodes, including commercial silicon nanoparticles, because of the higher pseudocapacitive contribution coming from ultrathin Si layer. Furthermore, unprecedent 3D pore design in cage shape, which prevents the particle scale expansion even after full lithiation demonstrates the high cycling stability. This concept can potentially be used to realize high‐power and high‐energy LIB anode materials.  相似文献

Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) has excellent electrochemical stability and fast ion diffusion coefficient due to the 3D Na+ ion superionic conductor framework, which make it an attractive cathode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the electrochemical performance of NVP needs to be further improved for applications in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Here, nanoflake‐assembled hierarchical NVP/C microflowers are synthesized using a facile method. The structure of as‐synthesized materials enhances the electrochemical performance by improving the electron conductivity, increasing electrode–electrolyte contact area, and shortening the diffusion distance. The as‐synthesized material exhibits a high capacity (230 mAh g?1), excellent cycling stability (83.6% of the initial capacity is retained after 5000 cycles), and remarkable rate performance (91 C) in hybrid LIBs. Meanwhile, the hybrid LIBs with the structure of NVP || 1 m LiPF6/EC (ethylene carbonate) + DMC (dimethyl carbonate) || NVP and Li4Ti5O12 || 1 m LiPF6/EC + DMC || NVP are assembled and display capacities of 79 and 73 mAh g?1, respectively. The insertion/extraction mechanism of NVP is systematically investigated, based on in situ X‐ray diffraction. The superior electrochemical performance, the design of hybrid LIBs, and the insertion/extraction mechanism investigation will have profound implications for developing safe and stable, high‐energy, and high‐power LIBs.  相似文献

Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) with outstanding energy and power density have been extensively investigated in recent years, rendering them the most suitable energy storage technology for application in emerging markets such as electric vehicles and stationary storage. More recently, sodium, one of the most abundant elements on earth, exhibiting similar physicochemical properties as lithium, has been gaining increasing attention for the development of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) in order to address the concern about Li availability and cost—especially with regard to stationary applications for which size and volume of the battery are of less importance. Compared with traditional intercalation reactions, conversion reaction‐based transition metal oxides (TMOs) are prospective anode materials for rechargeable batteries thanks to their low cost and high gravimetric specific capacities. In this review, the recent progress and remaining challenges of conversion reactions for LIBs and SIBs are discussed, covering an overview about the different synthesis methods, morphological characteristics, as well as their electrochemical performance. Potential future research directions and a perspective toward the practical application of TMOs for electrochemical energy storage are also provided.  相似文献

The solar‐rechargeable electric energy storage systems (SEESSs), which can simultaneously harvest and store solar energy, are considered a promising next‐generation renewable energy supply system. However, the difficulty in meeting the demands of higher overall photoelectric conversion and storage efficiency (PCSE) with both high power density and large energy density in the current SEESSs severely limit their practical application. Herein, a new class is demonstrated of portable and highly efficient SEESS that uniquely integrates a perovskite solar module (PSM) and an aluminum‐ion battery (AIB) directly on a bifunctional aluminum electrode without any external circuit. Such nanostructural design in the SEESS not only exhibits fast photo‐charge/discharge rate (less than one minute) with high power density (above 5000 W kg?1), but also delivers a high energy density (above 43 Wh kg?1). By rationally matching the maximum power point voltage of PSM with AIB charging voltage, an excellent solar‐charging efficiency of 15.2% and a high PCSE of 12.04% are achieved, which is among the best in all reported portable SEESSs. Moreover, enhanced PCSE is observed as the light intensity decreases, which makes such SEESS immune from the geographical location and climate limitations for diverse practical applications.  相似文献

Rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) offer the advantages of having great electrical energy storage and increased continuous and pulsed power output capabilities, which enable their applications in grid energy storage and electric vehicles (EVs). For safety, high power and durability considerations, spinel Li4Ti5O12 is one of the most appealing potential candidate as an anode material for power LIBs due to its excellent cycling stability and thermal stability. However, there are still a number of challenges remaining for Li4Ti5O12 battery applications. Herein, an updated overview of the latest advances in Li4Ti5O12 research is provided and key challenges for its future development (i.e., fast‐charging, specific capacity, swelling, interface chemistry, matching cathode and electrolyte as well as batteries design and manufacturing) are highlighted.  相似文献

There are growing concerns over the environmental, climate, and health impacts caused by using non‐renewable fossil fuels. The utilization of green energy, including solar and wind power, is believed to be one of the most promising alternatives to support more sustainable economic growth. In this regard, lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) can play a critically important role. To further increase the energy and power densities of LIBs, silicon anodes have been intensively explored due to their high capacity, low operation potential, environmental friendliness, and high abundance. The main challenges for the practical implementation of silicon anodes, however, are the huge volume variation during lithiation and delithiation processes and the unstable solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) films. Recently, significant breakthroughs have been achieved utilizing advanced nanotechnologies in terms of increasing cycle life and enhancing charging rate performance due partially to the excellent mechanical properties of nanomaterials, high surface area, and fast lithium and electron transportation. Here, the most recent advance in the applications of 0D (nanoparticles), 1D (nanowires and nanotubes), and 2D (thin film) silicon nanomaterials in LIBs are summarized. The synthetic routes and electrochemical performance of these Si nanomaterials, and the underlying reaction mechanisms are systematically described.  相似文献

The growing demand for advanced energy storage devices with high energy density and high safety has continuously driven the technical upgrades of cell architectures as well as electroactive materials. Designing thick electrodes with more electroactive materials is a promising strategy to improve the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) without alternating the underlying chemistry. However, the progress toward thick, high areal capacity electrodes is severely limited by the sluggish electronic/ionic transport and easy deformability of conventional electrodes. A self‐supported ultrahigh‐capacity and fire‐resistant LiFePO4 (UCFR‐LFP)‐based nanocomposite cathode is demonstrated here. Benefiting from the structural and chemical uniqueness, the UCFR‐LFP electrodes demonstrate exceptional improvements in electrochemical performance and mass loading of active materials, and thermal stability. Notably, an ultrathick UCFR‐LFP electrode (1.35 mm) with remarkably high mass loading of active materials (108 mg cm?2) and areal capacity (16.4 mAh cm?2) is successfully achieved. Moreover, the 1D inorganic binder‐like ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAP NWs) enable the UCFR‐LFP electrode with excellent thermal stability (structural integrity up to 1000 °C and electrochemical activity up to 750 °C), fire‐resistance, and wide‐temperature operability. Such a unique UCFR‐LFP electrode offers a promising solution for next‐generation LIBs with high energy density, high safety, and wide operating‐temperature window.  相似文献

LiNixMnyCo1?x?yO2 (NMC) cathode materials with Ni ≥ 0.8 have attracted great interest for high energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) but their practical applications under high charge voltages (e.g., 4.4 V and above) still face significant challenges due to severe capacity fading by the unstable cathode/electrolyte interface. Here, an advanced electrolyte is developed that has a high oxidation potential over 4.9 V and enables NMC811‐based LIBs to achieve excellent cycling stability in 2.5–4.4 V at room temperature and 60 °C, good rate capabilities under fast charging and discharging up to 3C rate (1C = 2.8 mA cm?2), and superior low‐temperature discharge performance down to ?30 °C with a capacity retention of 85.6% at C/5 rate. It is also demonstrated that the electrode/electrolyte interfaces, not the electrolyte conductivity and viscosity, govern the LIB performance. This work sheds light on a very promising strategy to develop new electrolytes for fast‐charging high‐energy LIBs in a wide‐temperature range.  相似文献

High energy‐density, low‐cost batteries are critically important to a variety of applications ranging from portable electronics to electric vehicles (EVs) and grid‐scale storage. While tremendous research effort has been focused on new materials or chemistries with high energy‐density potential, design innovations such as low‐tortuosity thick electrodes are another promising path toward higher energy density and lower cost. Growing demand for fast‐charging batteries has also highlighted the need for negative electrodes that can accept high rate charging without metal deposition; low tortuosity can be a benefit in this regard. However, a general and scalable fabrication method for low‐tortuosity electrodes is currently lacking. Here an emulsion‐based, magnetic‐alignment approach to producing thick electrodes (>400 µm thickness) with ultrahigh areal capacity (up to ≈14 mAh cm?2 vs 2–4 mAh cm?2 for conventional lithium ion) is reported. The process is demonstrated for LiCoO2 and meso‐carbon microbead graphite. The LiCoO2 cathodes are confirmed to have low tortuosity via DC‐depolarization experiments and deliver high areal capacity (>10 mAh cm?2) in galvanostatic discharge tests at practical C‐rates and model EV drive‐cycle tests. This simple fabrication method can potentially be applied to many other active materials to enable thick, low‐tortuosity electrodes.  相似文献

Numerous benefits of porous electrode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have been demonstrated, including examples of higher rate capabilities, better cycle lives, and sometimes greater gravimetric capacities at a given rate compared to nonporous bulk materials. These properties promise advantages of porous electrode materials for LIBs in electric and hybrid electric vehicles, portable electronic devices, and stationary electrical energy storage. This review highlights methods of synthesizing porous electrode materials by templating and template‐free methods and discusses how the structural features of porous electrodes influence their electrochemical properties. A section on electrochemical properties of porous electrodes provides examples that illustrate the influence of pore and wall architecture and interconnectivity, surface area, particle morphology, and nanocomposite formation on the utilization of the electrode materials, specific capacities, rate capabilities, and structural stability during lithiation and delithiation processes. Recent applications of porous solids as components for three‐dimensionally interpenetrating battery architectures are also described.  相似文献

Silicon anodes are regarded as one of the most promising alternatives to graphite for high energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), but their practical applications have been hindered by high volume change, limited cycle life, and safety concerns. In this work, nonflammable localized high‐concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) are developed for Si‐based anodes. The LHCEs enable the Si anodes with significantly enhanced electrochemical performances comparing to conventional carbonate electrolytes with a high content of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC). The LHCE with only 1.2 wt% FEC can further improve the long‐term cycling stability of Si‐based anodes. When coupled with a LiNi0.3Mn0.3Co0.3O2 cathode, the full cells using this nonflammable LHCE can maintain >90% capacity after 600 cycles at C/2 rate, demonstrating excellent rate capability and cycling stability at elevated temperatures and high loadings. This work casts new insights in electrolyte development from the perspective of in situ Si/electrolyte interphase protection for high energy‐density LIBs with Si anodes.  相似文献

With the development of flexible electronics, flexible lithium ion batteries (LIBs) have received great attention. Previously, almost all reported flexible components had shortcomings related to poor mechanical flexibility, low energy density, and poor safety, which led to the failure of scalable applications. This study demonstrates a fully flexible lithium ion battery using LiCoO2 as the cathode, Li4Ti5O12 as the anode, and graphene film as the flexible current collector. The graphene oxide modified gel polymer electrolyte exhibits higher ionic conductivity than a conventional liquid electrolyte and improves the safety of the flexible battery. The optimum design of the flexible graphene battery exhibits super electrochemical performance, with a 2.3 V output voltage plateau and a satisfactory capacity of 143.0 mAh g?1 at 1 C. The mass energy density and power density are both ≈1.4 times higher than a standard electrode using metal foils as current collectors. No capacity loss is observed after 100 thousand cycles of mechanical bending. More importantly, even in the clipping state, this flexible gel polymer battery can still demonstrate a stable and safe electrochemical performance. This work may lead to a promising strategy of high‐performance scalable LIBs for the next‐generation flexible electronics.  相似文献

The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is considered a promising candidate for the next generation of energy storage system due to its high specific energy density and low cost of raw materials. However, the practical application of Li–S batteries is severely limited by several weaknesses such as the shuttle effect of polysulfides and the insulation of the electrochemical products of sulfur and Li2S/Li2S2. Here, by doping nitrogen and integrating highly dispersed cobalt catalysts, a porous carbon nanocage derived from glucose adsorbed metal–organic framework is developed as the host for a sulfur cathode. This host structure combines the reported positive effects, including high conductivity, high sulfur loading, effective stress release, fast lithium‐ion kinetics, fast interface charge transport, fast redox of Li2Sn, and strong physical/chemical absorption, achieving a long cycle life (86% of capacity retention at 1C within 500 cycles) and high rate performance (600 mAh g?1 at 5C) for a Li–S battery. By combining experiments and density functional theoretical calculations, it is demonstrated that the well‐dispersed cobalt clusters play an important role in greatly improving the diffusion dynamics of lithium, and enhance the absorption and conversion capability of polysulfides in the host structure.  相似文献

Phosphorus‐based materials are promising for high‐performance lithium‐ion battery (LIB) applications due to their high theoretical specific capacity. Currently, the existing physical methods render great difficulty toward rational engineering on the nanostructural phosphorus or its composites, thus limiting its high‐rate LIB applications. For the first time, a sublimation‐induced synthesis of phosphorus‐based composite nanosheets by a chemistry‐based solvothermal reaction is reported. Its formation mechanism involves solid–vapor–solid transformation driven by continuous vaporization–condensation process, as well as subsequent bottom‐up assembly growth. The proof‐of‐concept LIBs composed of the phosphorus‐based nanosheets achieve a high capacity of 630 mAh g?1 at an ultrahigh current density of 20 A g?1, which is attributed to efficient lithium‐ion diffusion and electron transfer. Such simple sublimation‐induced transformation opens up new prospects for rational engineering of phosphorus‐based materials for enhancing electrochemical performance.  相似文献

Iron oxides, such as Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, have recently received increased attention as very promising anode materials for rechargeable lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high theoretical capacity, non‐toxicity, low cost, and improved safety. Nanostructure engineering has been demonstrated as an effective approach to improve the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. Here, recent research progress in the rational design and synthesis of diverse iron oxide‐based nanomaterials and their lithium storage performance for LIBs, including 1D nanowires/rods, 2D nanosheets/flakes, 3D porous/hierarchical architectures, various hollow structures, and hybrid nanostructures of iron oxides and carbon (including amorphous carbon, carbon nanotubes, and graphene). By focusing on synthesis strategies for various iron‐oxide‐based nanostructures and the impacts of nanostructuring on their electrochemical performance, novel approaches to the construction of iron‐oxide‐based nanostructures are highlighted and the importance of proper structural and compositional engineering that leads to improved physical/chemical properties of iron oxides for efficient electrochemical energy storage is stressed. Iron‐oxide‐based nanomaterials stand a good chance as negative electrodes for next generation LIBs.  相似文献

Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) have dominated the portable electronics industry and solid‐state electrochemical research and development for the past two decades. In light of possible concerns over the cost and future availability of lithium, sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) and other new technologies have emerged as candidates for large‐scale stationary energy storage. Research in these technologies has increased dramatically with a focus on the development of new materials for both the positive and negative electrodes that can enhance the cycling stability, rate capability, and energy density. Two‐dimensional (2D) materials are showing promise for many energy‐related applications and particularly for energy storage, because of the efficient ion transport between the layers and the large surface areas available for improved ion adsorption and faster surface redox reactions. Recent research highlights on the use of 2D materials in these future ‘beyond‐lithium‐ion’ battery systems are reviewed, and strategies to address challenges are discussed as well as their prospects.  相似文献

Potassium‐ion hybrid capacitors (PIHCs) hold the advantages of high‐energy density of batteries and high‐power output of supercapacitors and thus present great promise for the next generation of electrochemical energy storage devices. One of the most crucial tasks for developing a high‐performance PIHCs is to explore a favorable anode material with capability to balance the kinetics mismatch between battery‐type anodes and capacitor‐type cathode. Herein, a reliable route for fabricating sulfur and nitrogen codoped 3D porous carbon nanosheets (S‐N‐PCNs) is reported. Systematic characterizations coupled with kinetics analysis indicate that the doped heteroatoms of sulfur and nitrogen and the amplified graphite interlayer can provide ample structural defects and redox active sites that are beneficial for improving pseudocapacitive activity, enabling fast kinetics toward efficient potassium‐ion storage. The S‐N‐PCNs are demonstrated to exhibit superior potassium storage capability with a high capacity of 107 mAh g?1 at 20 A g?1 and long cycle stability. The as‐developed PIHCs present impressive electrochemical performance with an operating voltage as high as 4.0 V, an energy density of 187 Wh kg?1, a power density of 5136 W kg?1, and a capacity retention of 86.4% after 3000 cycles.  相似文献

Since their commercialization by Sony in 1991, graphite anodes in combination with various cathodes have enabled the widespread success of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), providing over 10 billion rechargeable batteries to the global population. Next‐generation nonaqueous alkali metal‐ion batteries, namely sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium‐ion batteries (PIBs), are projected to utilize intercalation‐based carbon anodes as well, due to their favorable electrochemical properties. While traditionally graphite anodes have dominated the market share of LIBs, other carbon materials have been investigated, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, and disordered carbons. The relationship between carbon material properties, electrochemical performance, and charge storage mechanisms is clarified for these alkali metal‐ion batteries, elucidating possible strategies for obtaining enhanced cycling stability, specific capacity, rate capability, and safety aspects. As a key component in determining cell performance, the solid electrolyte interphase layer is described in detail, particularly for its dependence on the carbon anode. Finally, battery safety at extreme temperatures is discussed, where carbon anodes are susceptible to dendrite formation, accelerated aging, and eventual thermal runaway. As society pushes toward higher energy density LIBs, this review aims to provide guidance toward the development of sustainable next‐generation SIBs and PIBs.  相似文献
