Two of the most fundamental questions in tadpole biology, also applicable to most small, under-studied organisms are: (1) ‘Why are they built the way they are?’ and (2) ‘Why do they live where they do?’ Regrettably, despite significant progress in most aspects of tadpole biology, the answers to these questions are not much better now than they were in the last century. We propose that an autecological approach, that is the careful observation of individuals and how they interact with the environment, is a potential path towards a fuller understanding of tadpole ecomorphology and evolution. We also discuss why more attention should be given to studying atypical tadpoles from atypical environments, such as torrential streams, water-filled cavities of terrestrial plants and wet rock surfaces neighbouring streams. Granted, tadpoles are rare in these settings, but in those unusual habitats the physical environments can be well described and characterized. In contrast, the more common ponds where tadpoles are found are typically too structurally complex to be easily delineated. This makes it difficult to know exactly what individual tadpoles are doing and what environmental parameters they are responding to. Our overall thesis is that to understand tadpoles we must see exactly what they are doing, where they are doing it, and how they are doing it. This takes work, but we suggest it is feasible and could greatly advance our understanding of how anuran larvae have evolved. The same strategies for studying tadpoles that we encourage here can be applied to the study of many other small and fast-moving animals.  相似文献

Dependence receptors form a family of functionally related receptors which are all able to induce two completely opposite intracellular signals depending on the availability of their ligand. Indeed, in its presence, they mediate a positive, classical signal transduction of survival, differentiation or migration but without it, they trigger a negative signal which leads to cell death. The molecular mechanisms involved in triggering cell death in the absence of ligand are starting to be unravelled: dependence receptors are recruited at well-defined domains at the plasma membrane, they trigger cell death through a monomeric form, they are cleaved by caspases and they recruit a caspase activating complex.  相似文献

Virtually all theories of the evolution of cooperation require that cooperators find ways to interact with one another selectively, to the exclusion of cheaters. This means that individuals must make reputational judgments about others as cooperators, based on either direct or indirect evidence. Humans, and possibly other species, add another component to the process: they know that they are being judged by others, and so they adjust their behavior in order to affect those judgments – so-called impression management. Here, we show for the first time that already preschool children engage in such behavior. In an experimental study, 5-year-old human children share more and steal less when they are being watched by a peer than when they are alone. In contrast, chimpanzees behave the same whether they are being watched by a groupmate or not. This species difference suggests that humans'' concern for their own self-reputation, and their tendency to manage the impression they are making on others, may be unique to humans among primates.  相似文献

Aim of this research was to establish effects and influence of personality traits on sexual functioning of schizophrenic and depressive patients, compared to healthy individuals. 300 participants were included in this research. For patients suffering from schizophrenia it was established that the more they are open to experience and the less they are neurotic their sexual drive is stronger. For patients suffering from depression it was established that the more they are open to experience and conscientious and the less they are agreeable their sexual drive is stronger. Furthermore, higher openness is a significant predictor for easier sexual arousal and the more those patients are conscientious and the less they are agreeable easier is for them to achieve orgasms. Personality traits proved to be significant predictors of sexual functioning in schizophrenic and depressive patients, but not in healthy individuals.  相似文献

It was demonstrated that the spleen pigment cells of Amphibia are macrophages: they show an ultrastructurally distinctive morphology, are able to phagocytose and react positively for non-specific esterases. These pigmented macrophages express mRNA for tyrosinase and also they show dopa oxidase activity; therefore they are able to synthesize melanins, as Kupffer cells do.  相似文献

The reverse hemolytic plaque assay (RHPA) was used to study the secretory properties of single rat pancreatic B cells, and to identify insulin-secreting cells for patch-clamp experiments. In secretion studies using the RHPA, we find that the percentage of secreting B cells and the amount of insulin secreted per B cell increase as the glucose concentration is raised from 0 to 20 mM. Using the whole-cell variation of the patch-clamp technique, we find that identified B cells have three types of channels capable of carrying inward current: (a) tetrodotoxin-sensitive, voltage-dependent Na channels, which are nearly completely inactivated at -40 mV, (b) fast deactivating (FD) Ca channels, and (c) slowly deactivating (SD) Ca channels. We have shown that Na channels are functionally significant to the B cell, because tetrodotoxin partially inhibits glucose-induced insulin secretion. The properties of FD and SD Ca channels differ in several respects. FD channels deactivate at -80 mV, with a time constant of 129 microseconds, they are half-maximally activated near +15 mV, they do not inactivate during 100 ms, they conduct Ba2+ better than Ca2+, and they are very sensitive to washout during intracellular dialysis. SD channels, on the other hand, deactivate with a time constant of 2.8 ms, they are half-maximally activated near -5 mV, they inactivate rapidly, they conduct Ba2+ and Ca2+ equally well, and they are insensitive to washout.  相似文献

Being En Route     
Through an ethnography of unauthorized migration from El Salvador to the United States, I explore "clandestinity" as a hidden, yet known, dimension of social reality. Unauthorized migrants who are en route to the United States have to make themselves absent from the spaces they occupy. When they become clandestine, such migrants embody illegality; in some cases, they literally "go underground" should they die and be buried en route. Because their presence is prohibited, unauthorized migrants do not fully arrive even when they reach their destinations. There are parallels between the ways that migrants are present in yet absent from nations, and the ways that ethnographers are present in yet absent from the field. This ethnography of migrants en route therefore suggests how anthropological knowledge practices also produce realities that are hidden, yet known.  相似文献

Golden digger wasps, Sphex ichneumoneus L. (Sphecidae), are a solitary, ground-nesting species that dig burrows to particular depths in the soil. I develop and evaluate alternative hypeses about the mechanisms controlling digging behaviour. By altering the wasps' burrows as thare digging, I show that they are not digging for some prescribed length of time nor are they diggingtil they reach some suitable environmental characteristic deep in the soil. Rather, they appear be digging until they reach a particular tunnel length, making corrections if the tunnel is too shallor too deep. This distance can be altered somewhat by surface environmental conditions.  相似文献

A people's medical beliefs and practices persist because they answer instrumental and moral imperatives, and they are empirically effective. This is not the same thing as saying that they are effective from the standpoint of Western medical notions or that they always bring the results for which people hope. The research agenda of paleoanthropology involves many topics and methodologies. Fossil specimens are allocated to species, and those species are assigned to the hominin clade. After that we want to know how they are related to each other, what they ate, how much they weighed, how smart they were, etc. We also want to know about the origin of particular attributes of hominins, such as our delayed growth and development, bipedalism, and language. The data available to answer these complex questions are confounded by fragmentary fossil specimens, small sample sizes, limited opportunities for controlled experimentation, and the inherent limitations of historical data. Also, because many traits are effectively unique to hominins, even observational comparative studies are inevitably limited in what they can tell us, if not impossible to conduct. We explore how these limitations should, but often do not, constrain the questions that paleoanthropologists should attempt to answer.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Sphex ichneumoneus are solitary, ground-nesting wasps with apparently broad nesting requirements.
2. Nest-site selecting behaviour involves four levels of decisions. First, the wasps are not active unless temperatures are high and they are less active during cloudy weather. Second, at the beginning of a nesting sequence they generally fly to the site from which they emerged, but occasionally they fly to other flat, vegetation-free areas. Third, after landing, they engage in a predigging search of the area, walking around, looking into and briefly digging in the nests of other wasps. In this way they apparently compare and choose to begin digging in the warmest areas available which are not too close to other nests. Fourth, if the soil is too soft and collapses or if it is too hard-packed, the wasp resumes the predigging search. The preference for digging within a range of compactness means that they generally choose sandy loam.
3. Theory would suggest that the wasps may spend an optimal amount of time in the predigging search behaviour and that frequency-dependent selection may be an important factor in the choice of nesting sites.
4. By choosing nesting sites according to these rules, the wasps are ensuring that their offspring develop in the warmest and best-drained soils available.  相似文献

In The Evolution of Moral Progress Allen Buchanan and Russell Powell advance an evolutionary explanation of moral progress by morality becoming more ‘inclusivist’. We are prepared to accept this explanation as far as it goes, but argue that it fails to explain how morality can become inclusivist in the fuller sense they intend. In fact, it even rules out inclusivism in their intended sense of moral progress, since they believe that human altruism and prosocial attitudes are essentially parochial. We also respond to their charge that the possibility of moral enhancement by biomedical means that we have defended in numerous publications assumes that moral attitudes are biologically hard‐wired to an extent that implies that they are resilient to the influence of cognitive or cultural factors. Quite the contrary, we think they are more open to such influence than they seem to do.  相似文献

The distribution, ultrastructure, and chemistry of microfilaments in cultured chick embryo fibroblasts were studied by thin sectioning of flat-embedded untreated and glycerol-extracted cells, histochemical and immunological electron microscopic procedures, and the negative staining of cells cultured on electron microscopic grids. In these cultured cells, the microfilaments are arranged into thick bundles that are disposed longitudinally and in looser arrangements in the fusiform-shaped cells. In the latter case, they are concentrated along the margins of the flattened cell, on the dorsal surface, and particularly at the ends of the cell and its ventral surface, where contact is made with the plastic dish or with other cells. Extracellular filaments, presumably originating from within the cell, are found at these points of contact. The microfilaments are composed in part of an actin-like protein. These filaments are between 70 and 90 Å in diameter, they are stable in 50% glycerol, they have an endogenous ATPase (myosin-like?) associated with them, they bind rabbit muscle heavy meromyosin, and they specifically bind antibody directed against isolated actin-like protein. In the cultured chick embryo fibroblasts, the microfilaments are essential for the establishment and maintenance of form, and they are probably critical elements for adhesion and motility. The microfilaments might also serve as stabilizers of intramembranous particle fluidity.  相似文献

The motives of play activity constitute a key question. It is no accident that views on play diverge most conspicuously with regard to the the stimuli leading to play. Theories of satisfaction, pleasure, internal primary drives and self-affirmation—all "in-depth theories"—are essentially theories of the motivating forces that give rise to play. The principal flaw in these conceptions is how they construe the motivating forces of play: they are situated in the subject, in the child and in the child's experiences. These theories discount the fact that these experiences are but secondary to an activity, i.e., they are symptomatic in that they indicate the activity is indeed taking place, but they tell us nothing about the real, objective, stimuli of the activity.  相似文献
