Summary The effects of temperature and sulphur nutrition on the growth, yield and mineral composition (N, NO3-N, S and SO4-S) ofHordeum vulgare L. cv Olli,Pisum sativum L. cv Dark Skin Perfection, andBrassica campestris L. cv Arlo, were investigated in controlled environments. When barley and rape plants were grown at O ppm S, deficiency symptoms developed in about two weeks, whereas peas at the same level developed deficiency symptoms in about three weeks. The location of the deficiency symptoms varied between species. Plant weight increased with increasing S levels, but the shoot had a greater growth response than did the root. Optimum day/night growing temperature regimes for barley and peas were found to be near 24/16 at four weeks from seeding and near 18/10°C at the mature stage as evident from weights, maximum fruit set and mineral uptake. Optimum temperature for rape plants was near 29/21°C at both stages of growth. Mineral concentration was higher at four weeks after seeding than at the mature stage in pea and rape plants, while in barley the mineral concentration was similar at both stages of growth. With increase in S supply there was an increase in concentration of both total S and SO4-S. Concentrations also increased with increasing temperatures. S deficient plants had increased total N and NO3-N concentrations in all three species. NO3-N concentration also increased with an increase in temperature while total N concentration was not appreciably influenced. These experiments indicated that the effects of S nutrition on growth, development and mineral composition of plants depends on the species, temperature regime and growth stage  相似文献

Nitrogen nutrition of rice plants under salinity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, Koshihikari and Pokkali, were grown in solution culture at three concentrations of NaCl or Na2SO4 [0 (S0), 50 (S1), and 100 (S2) mmol dm–3] and three N contents [0.7 (N1), 7 (N2) and 14 (N3) mmol dm–3]. Salinity significantly decreased dry matter of both cultivars. Pokkali had better growth than Koshihikari under both saline and non-saline conditions. Applications of N enhanced development of shoot dry mass under S0 and S1 treatments up to N2. Under S2, N application had no effect on shoot dry mass of both cultivars. Root dry mass of both cultivars decreased with increasing N application at S1 and S2. Shoot and root NO3-N content in both rice cultivars increased with increasing N concentration in the nutrient solutions. The absorption of NO3-N was less in Koshihikari than Pokkali plants, and also was much less in Cl than SO4 2– salinity suggesting the antagonism between Cl and NO3 . In addition a significant negative correlation between concentrations of NO3-N and Cl in the shoots or roots was observed in both cultivars  相似文献

Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Counter) were grown in 12-L polyethylene containers in aerated and CaCO3-buffered nutrient solutions containing different concentrations of complete stock solutions with either nitrate (stock solution N) or ammonium (stock solution A) as the only nitrogen source (X1 = standard concentration with 5 mM NO3 -N or NH4 +-N, and X3, X5.5, X8 and X11 = 3, 5.5, 8, 11 times the standard concentration), or a mixture of both stock solutions (N:A ratio = 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, 0:100) at moderate nutrient concentration (X3). Total dry matter production and fruit dry weight were only slightly affected by increasing nutrient concentration if nitrate was supplied as the sole nitrogen source. Compared to nitrate, ammonium nitrogen caused a decrease in total dry weight (32–86% between X1 and X11), but led to an increase in both total dry weight and fruit dry weight (11% and 30%) at low concentration if supplied in addition to nitrate nitrogen (N:A ratio = 75:25). Dry matter partitioning in plants was affected by the strength of the nutrient solution, but even more by ammonium nitrogen. Fruits accumulated relatively less dry matter than did the vegetative parts of tomato plants when supplied with nutrient solutions containing ammonium as the only nitrogen source (fruit dry weight to total dry weight ratio 0.37 and 0.15 at low and high nutrient concentration), while nitrate nitrogen rather supported an increase in dry matter accumulation in the reproductive organs (fruit dry weight to total dry weight ratio 0.39–0.46). The water use efficiency (WUE) was only slightly affected by the strength of the nutrient solutions containing nitrate nitrogen (2.9–3.4 g DW (kg H2O)–1), while ammonium nitrogen led to a decrease in WUE from 2.4 to 1.3 g DW (kg H2O)–1at low (X1) and high (X11) nutrient concentration, respectively. The proline content of leaves fluctuated (0.1–5.0 mol (g fresh weight)–1) according to nutrient concentration and global radiation, and reflected enhanced sensitivity of plants to these potential stress factors if ammonium was the predominant N source supplied. It was concluded, that proline is a reliable indicator of the environmental stress imposed on hydroponically grown tomato plants.  相似文献

Summary The effect of increasing rates of nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S) as fertilizers on the yield, leaf area and N, P, S, Ca, Mg, NO3 and SO4 = content in leaves of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) were studied in a hydroponic culture experiment under greenhouse conditions. Bean plants responded significantly to all treatments with differents N/S ratios. When plants grew with high N/S ratios, the leaf content of N, Ca and NO3 increased while the content of K, P and SO4 = decreased. However, optimal yield and leaf area were not obtained. Optimal leaf and fruit dry matter was obtained at N/S ratio value of 1.41. When lower N/S rates were used, optimal leaf and fruit dry matter was only observed when the leaf N/S ratio was between 15 and 16. At high sulphate levels in the nutrient solution there is no interaction with nitrate which is easily observed, resulting in an increase in yield. An interaction between nitrate and sulphate in the nutrient solution was found at a N/S ratio of 0.81 which produced in leaves a synergic effect between P-K, an antagonistic effect between N-P and N-K and a lower yield. This research was supported by Fundacion ‘Ramon Areces’.  相似文献

The N, P, and S cycles in pristine forests are assumed to differ from those of anthropogenically impacted areas, but there are only a few studies to support this. Our objective was therefore to assess the controls of N, P, and S release, immobilization, and transport in a remote tropical montane forest. The study forest is located on steep slopes of the northern Andes in Ecuador. We determined the concentrations of NO3-N, NH4-N, dissolved organic N (DON), PO4-P, dissolved organic P (DOP), SO4-S, dissolved organic S (DOS), and dissolved organic C (DOC) in rainfall, throughfall, stemflow, lateral flow (in the organic layer), litter leachate, mineral soil solution, and stream water of three 8–13 ha catchments (1900–2200 m a.s.l.). The organic forms of N, P, and S contributed, on average, 55, 66, and 63% to the total N, P, and S concentrations in all ecosystem fluxes, respectively. The organic layer was the largest source of all N, P, and S species except for inorganic P and S. Most PO4 was released in the canopy by leaching and most SO4 in the mineral soil by weathering. The mineral soil was a sink for all studied compounds except for SO4. Consequently, concentrations of dissolved inorganic and organic N and P were as low in stream water (TDN: 0.34–0.39 mg N l−1, P not detectable) as in rainfall (TDN: 0.39–0.48 mg N l−1, P not detectable), whereas total S concentrations were elevated (stream water: 0.04–0.15, rainfall: 0.01–0.07 mg S l−1). Dissolved N, P, and S forms were positively correlated with pH at the scale of soil peda except inorganic S. Soil drying and rewetting promoted the release of dissolved inorganic N. High discharge levels following heavy rainstorms were associated with increased DOC, DON, NO3-N and partly also NH4-N concentrations in stream water. Nitrate-N concentrations in the stream water were positively correlated with stream discharge during the wetter period of the year. Our results demonstrate that the sources and sinks of N, P, and S were element-specific. More than half of the cycling N, P, and S was organic. Soil pH and moisture were important controls of N, P, and S solubility at the scale of individual soil peda whereas the flow regime influenced the export with stream water.  相似文献

Investigating the impact of plant species on sulphur (S) availability in the rhizosphere soil is agronomically important to optimize S fertilization. Bulk, rhizosphere soils and the roots of field-grown rape and barley were sampled 7 times (every fortnight), from March to June, at plant maturity. Root carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in water extract, along with soil SO42−-S, labile soil organic-C (HWC) and -N (HWN) in hot water extract, as well as soil arylsulphatase activity were then monitored. The average concentrations of both HWC and HWN were observed in the following decreasing order: rape rhizosphere soil >barley rhizosphere soil >bulk soil. In parallel, the average contents of water extractable-C and -N in rape roots were higher than those in barley roots. These results suggest that soil C and N contents in hot water extract (including rhizodeposition) were correlated with C and N released by roots. Great ARS activities found in rape rhizosphere soil were accompanied by great SO42−-S mineralization over time. Finally, bulk and rhizosphere soils of rape and barley were pooled from the seven samplings and incubated with the corresponding pooled root water-soluble C of both plant species and glucose-C. After 1 and 9 weeks, a greater net S mineralization (gross mineralization - immobilization) was observed with rape root water-soluble C than with barley root water-soluble C and glucose-C. Conjointly, we found a higher average value of ARS activity in rape rhizosphere than in barley rhizosphere soil. Our findings suggest that plant species, via their rhizodeposition, determine the dynamic of S in soil.  相似文献

Alleviation of nickel toxicity by ammonium supply to sunflower plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Zornoza  P.  Robles  S.  Martin  N. 《Plant and Soil》1999,208(2):221-226
Phytotoxicity of nickel (Ni) varies within plant species and cultivars as well as with the concentration of Ni in the rooting medium. Moreover, it is known that several nutrients can modify the plant response to excess Ni. Nitrogen can be absorbed by plants as different N forms and because N metabolism and Ni are closely related, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to study the effect of Ni toxicity on the growth, nutrient status of the different plant parts and leaf chlorophyll concentrations in sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) cv Quipu grown with different forms of N supply. The plants were grown under controlled conditions for 35 days. Depending on the N source supplied, there were significant differences in the sensitivity of sunflower plants to excess Ni. Tolerance was lowest when grown with NO3 alone. A high Ni and NO3 as the only N source resulted in reduced dry weight and significant decreases in nutrient concentration. Plants supplied with a mixture of NO3 and NH4 + absorbed in the presence of Ni in solution about three times less Ni than those supplied with NO3 alone. Consequently, there were great differences in Ni concentrations between treatments. With a N nutrition of 100% NO3 -N, Ni supply led to severe growth inhibition. Just contrary, simultaneous supply of NO3 and NH4 + not only reduced Ni toxicity, but growth was even stimulated by Ni if supplied to plants fed with NO3 and NH4 +. This indicates the significant role of the N form supplied in the behaviour of Ni toxicity in sunflower plants. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The distribution of S to sulfate, glucosinolates, glutathione, and the insoluble fraction within oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) leaves of different ages was investigated during vegetative growth. The concentrations of glutathione and glucosinolates increased from the oldest to the youngest leaves, whereas the opposite was observed for SO42−. The concentration of insoluble S was similar among all of the leaves. At sufficient S supply and in the youngest leaves, 2% of total S was allocated to glutathione, 6% to glucosinolates, 50% to the insoluble fraction, and the remainder accumulated as SO42−. In the middle and oldest leaves, 70% to 90% of total S accumulated as SO42−, whereas glutathione and glucosinolates together accounted for less than 1% of S. When the S supply was withdrawn (minus S), the concentrations of all S-containing compounds, particularly SO42−, decreased in the youngest and middle leaves. Neither glucosinolates nor glutathione were major sources of S during S deficiency. Plants grown on nutrient solution containing minus S and low N were less deficient than plants grown on solution containing minus S and high N. The effect of N was explained by differences in growth rate. The different responses of leaves of different ages to S deficiency have to be taken into account for the development of field diagnostic tests to determine whether plants are S deficient.  相似文献

Apart from certain studies on Macrocystis pyrifera (Linnaeus) C. Agardh, very few in situ experimental studies on production have been carried out to verify that “bottom–up effects” (relating to nutrient supply) are more important than “top–down” effects (relating to herbivory) in temperate kelp forests. The effects of nutrient supply on recruitment and production of hatchery-raised gametophytes of Saccharina japonica, cultivated on a rope, and wild Saccharina religiosa, cultivated on a rope and on new concrete reefs placed at the sea bottom, were examined at an experimental site with artificial nutrient addition continuously from October 2008 to May 2009 and compared to kelp that was cultivated from October 2008 to May 2009 without nutrient supply, at a natural site in Tomari (Sea of Japan, southwestern Hokkaido, Japan). At both sites, sea urchins were removed for exclusion of top–down effect. At the natural site, no hatchery-raised S. japonica and wild S. religiosa grew on the rope. No wild S. religiosa grew on the porous-concrete reefs and rocks. At the nutrient-enhanced site, S. japonica and S. religiosa grew rapidly on the rope, at rates of 47.7 and 33.3 plants/10 cm length rope, respectively. S. religiosa grew on the concrete reefs at a concentration of 9.7 plants/0.3 m2. At the nutrient-enhanced site, the concentrations of NH4-N, NO3-N, NO2-N, and PO4-P ranged from 35.2–173.2, 2.1–10.9, 0.3–1.5, and 0.8–2.6 μmol L?1, respectively, being markedly higher than those at the natural site, where these nutrient concentrations were almost equal to the averages off Tomari. These results indicate that the production of Saccharina kelp is restricted by bottom–up effects (at a low nutrient concentration) in the Sea of Japan, southwestern Hokkaido. Nutrient supply would be essential for growth enhancement of Saccharina kelp production in a marine environment around Japan where, in recent times, water temperatures have increased by ca. 0.5 °C and nutrient concentrations have decreased.  相似文献

The green-tide macroalga, Ulva prolifera, was tested in the laboratory to determine its nutrient uptake and photosynthesis under different conditions. In the nutrient concentration experiments U. prolifera showed a saturated uptake for nitrate but an escalating uptake in the tested range for phosphorus. Both N/P and NO3 ?/NH4 + ratios influenced nutrient uptake significantly (p?<?0.05) while the PSII quantum yield [Y(II)] (p?>?0.05) remained unaffected. The maximum N uptake rate (33.9?±?0.8 μmol g?1 DW h?1) and P uptake rate (11.1?±?4.7) was detected at N/P ratios of 7.5 and 2.2, respectively. U. prolifera preferred NH4 +-N to NO3 ?-N when the NO3 ?-N/NH4 +-N ratio was less than 2.2 (p?<?0.05). But between ratios of 2.2 and 12.9, the uptake of NO3 ?-N surpassed that of NH4 +-N. In the temperature experiments, the highest N uptake rate and [Y(II)] were observed at 20 °C, while the lowest rates were detected at 5 °C. P uptake rates were correlated with increasing temperature.  相似文献

Calcicolous plants are generally more Fe-efficient than calcifugous plants, because they respond to Fe stress by releasing H-ions and “reductants” from their roots that causes Fe to become available. The objective of our study was to determine if differential response to Fe stress in calcicolous and calcifugous varieties affects nitrate reductase activity. T3238FER (Fe-efficient) and T3238fer (Fe-inefficient) tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cultivars were grown in nutrient solutions supplied with N as NH4+-N plus NO3?-N, and as NO3?-N only. The chemical reactions induced by Fe stress concomitantly increased nitrate reductase activity in roots and tops of calcicolous, but not in calcifugous tomato. This nitrate reductase activity decreased, however, when Fe was made available to the plants. When Fe stress was eliminated by adding Fe, nitrate reductase activity was comparable in the two cultivars.  相似文献

Ricinus communis L. plants were grown in nutrient solutions in which N was supplied as NO3 or NH4+, the solutions being maintained at pH 5.5. In NO3-fed plants excess nutrient anion over cation uptake was equivalent to net OH efflux, and the total charge from NO3 and SO42− reduction equated to the sum of organic anion accumulation plus net OH efflux. In NH4+-fed plants a large H+ efflux was recorded in close agreement with excess cation over anion uptake. This H+ efflux equated to the sum of net cation (NH4+ minus SO42−) assimilation plus organic anion accumulation. In vivo nitrate reductase assays revealed that the roots may have the capacity to reduce just under half of the total NO3 that is taken up and reduced in NO3-fed plants. Organic anion concentration in these plants was much higher in the shoots than in the roots. In NH4+-fed plants absorbed NH4+ was almost exclusively assimilated in the roots. These plants were considerably lower in organic anions than NO3-fed plants, but had equal concentrations in shoots and roots. Xylem and phloem saps were collected from plants exposed to both N sources and analyzed for all major contributing ionic and nitrogenous compounds. The results obtained were used to assist in interpreting the ion uptake, assimilation, and accumulation data in terms of shoot/root pH regulation and cycling of nutrients.  相似文献

Lupins, canola, ryegrass and wheat fertilized with Na2 35SO4 and either 15NH4Cl or K15NO3(N:S=10:1), were grown in the field in unconfined microplots, and the sources of N and S (fertilizer, soil, atmosphere, seed) in plant tops during crop development were estimated. Modelled estimates of the proportion of lupin N derived from the atmosphere, which were obtained independently of reference plants, were used to calculate the proportion of lupin N derived from the soil. Total uptake of N and S and uptake of labelled N and S increased during crop development. Total uptake of S by canola was higher than lupins, but labelled S uptake by lupins exceeded uptake by canola. The form of N applied had no effect on uptake of labelled and unlabelled forms of N or S. Ratios of labelled to unlabelled S and ratios of labelled to unlabelled N derived from soil sources decreased during growth, and were less for S than for N for each crop at each sampling time. Although ratios of labelled to unlabelled soil-derived N were similar between crops at 155, 176 and 190 days after sowing, ratios of labelled to unlabelled S for lupins were higher than for the reference crops and declined during this period. The ratios of labelled to unlabelled S in lupins and the reference plants therefore bore no relationship either to ratios of labelled to unlabelled soil-derived N in the plants, or to total S uptake by the plants. Therefore the hypothesis that equal ratios of labelled N to unlabelled soil-derived N in legumes (Rleg) and reference plants (Rref) would be indicated by equal ratios of labelled to unlabelled S was not supported by the data. The results therefore show that the accuracy of reference plant-derived values of Rleg cannot be evaluated by labelling with 35S.  相似文献

Summary Perennial ryegrass was grown in flowing solution culture with nitrogen supplied in amounts that increased exponentially,i.e. in parallel with the rate of increase in growth. Nitrogen was supplied as either NO 3 or NH 4 + , and the amounts to be added were calculated on the basis of extrapolated values for dry weights obtained from fitted curves. There were two rates of addition for each form of N aimed at providing adequate (5.0 per cent) and less than adequate (2.75 per cent) contents in the plants in each case. Measured plant weights and N concentrations were in close agreement with predicted values over a four week experimental period. There was no effect of N-form at high N, and these plants produced 46 per cent more dry matter than the plants at low N. Only minor differences in overall growth occurred with NO 3 or NH 4 + plants at low N, but the NH 4 + plants had a greater shoot:root ratio. The absorption rate (m mol Ng root d−1) for NH 4 + -N was therefore greater than for NO 3 -N. The cation/anion composition of the plants was affected in a predicable way, and to a greater or lesser extent at high or low N, respectively, in NO 3 or NH 4 + plants. The major changes in cation composition came through effects on potassium absorption. Plants with low NO 3 appeared to be under greater N stress than those with low NH 4 + because of the lower shoot:root ratio and the greater C∶N ratio in the shoots.  相似文献

Intact Myriophyllum spicatum plants were grown in compartmentalized containers in a growth room so that the roots were separated from the shoots by a watertight partition. Nitrogen 15N was added to the water or sediment to trace the uptake of inorganic N by the plant shoots or roots. Myriophyllum spicatum is capable of taking up inorganic N through both roots and shoots. Plant N requirements can apparently be met by root uptake alone. However, when about 0·1 mg/l of NH4-N were present in the water, foliar uptake supplied more N to the plants than did root uptake. Foliar uptake of NH4-N was found to be several times faster than that of NO3-N when both forms of N were present in the water. Only about 1% of the N taken up by the roots was subsequently released to the water through the foliage.  相似文献

Sulfur (S) deficiency in soils and plants has been increased in the recent decade which is reducing crop yield and quality. Unfortunately, no extensive study has been conducted on S nutritional status of plants in Turkey. In this study, soil and plant samples were collected from Çukurova, Central Anatolia and GAP regions where wheat is extensively cultivated. Plant samples either as flag leaf or the whole shoot were collected depending on growth stage of wheat crop at sample collection. Similarly, surface (0–20 cm) and sub-surface (20–40 cm) soil samples were collected from plant sampling sites and a total 963 plant and 1947 soil samples were collected during the study. The S concentration in flag leaf samples varied between 0.18 and 0.67%, 0.11–0.59% and 0.17–0.82% for central Anatolia, Çukurova and GAP regions, respectively. According to S concentration in flag leaf samples, 99% of the plants in Çukurova region were found sufficient in S nutrition. However, 49% of the samples collected from central Anatolia and GAP regions were deficient in S. Critical N:S ratio indicating S nutrition status of plants was lower than the widely accepted critical value of 17. This low N:S ratio was a consequence of deficient N nutrition rather than S nutrition. Moreover, it was observed that plant available SO4-S concentration of soils varied within and among sampled provinces with an average value of 20.6 and 31.6 mg kg−1 for surface and sub-surface samples, respectively. The SO4-S concentration increased with increasing soil depth. The results indicate a significantly positive correlation between S concentration in plant shoot and plant available SO4-S concentration in soils. In conclusion, S-containing fertilizer use in central Anatolia and GAP regions must be considered as an important approach for the prevention of yield and quality losses. Furthermore, rapid and sensitive plant and soil analysis methods are needed, which must also consider the local and site-specific conditions.  相似文献

Bean, corn, and tomato plants were grown in a nutrient solution labeled with 32P, 45Ca, or 35S and varying concentrations of AgNO3. Following a 6-hour treatment period, plants were harvested and analyzed. A low Ag+ concentration (50 nanomolar) inhibited the shoot uptake of the ions investigated. In the roots, Ca uptake increased whereas P and S uptake decreased.  相似文献

Hydraulic lift (HL) is the passive movement of water through plant roots, driven by gradients in water potential. The greater soil–water availability resulting from HL may in principle lead to higher plant nutrient uptake, but the evidence for this hypothesis is not universally supported by current experiments. We grew a grass species common in North America in two-layer pots with three treatments: (1) the lower layer watered, the upper one unwatered (HL), (2) both layers watered (W), and (3) the lower layer watered, the upper one unwatered, but with continuous light 24 h a day to limit HL (no-HL). We inserted ingrowth cores filled with enriched-nitrogen organic matter (15N-OM) in the upper layer and tested whether decomposition, mineralization and uptake of 15N were higher in plants performing HL than in plants without HL. Soils in the upper layer were significantly wetter in the HL treatment than in the no-HL treatment. Decomposition rates were similar in the W and HL treatments and lower in no-HL. On average, the concentration of NH4 +-N in ingrowth cores was highest in the W treatment, and NO3 -N concentrations were highest in the no-HL treatment, with HL having intermediate values for both, suggesting differential mineralization of organic N among treatments. Aboveground biomass, leaf 15N contents and the 15N uptake in aboveground tissues were higher in W and HL than in no-HL, indicating higher nutrient uptake and improved N status of plants performing HL. However, there were no differences in total root nitrogen content or 15N uptake by roots, indicating that HL affected plant allocation of acquired N to photosynthetic tissues. Our evidence for the role of HL in organic matter decomposition and nutrient cycling suggests that HL could have positive effects on plant nutrient dynamics and nutrient turnover.  相似文献

We studied the responses of Xanthium occidentale (Bertol.) (cockleburor Noogoora burr), a noxious weed, to atmospheric CO2 enrichmentand nitrate-N concentrations in the root zone ranging from 0.5to 25 mM. CO2 enrichment (1500 cm3 m–3) increased dry-matterproduction to about the same extent (18 per cent) at all levelsof supplied N: most of the increment in dry matter was distributedequally between leaves and roots so that there was little effecton shoot-to-root dry-weight ratios. Growth was stimulated greatlyby N and plateaued at 12 mM supplied N. Shoot-to-root dry-weightand total N ratios increased with increasing N supply. CO2 enrichmenthad no effect on the total amount of N accumulated by plants, but increased the N-use efficiency of leaves. Enriched plantshad lower concentrations and quantities of N in their leavesthan controls, and therefore lower shoot-to-root total N ratios.Little free NO3 accumulated in organs of control or enrichedplants. NO3 was the major form of N in xylem sap fromdetopped plants at low supplied NO3-N, but amino N was equalin importance at high supplied NO3-N in control and enrichedplants. Concentrations of NO3 were lower in the xylemsap of CO2 enriched plants. It was concluded that the betterN-use efficiency of CO2 enriched plants could result in increasedgrowth of X. occidentale in regions of marginal soil fertilityas atmospheric levels of CO2 increase.
