Bark/phloem disk sandwiches (100 cm2) were colonized with one to six mating pairs of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., to observe gallery construction and evaluate if avoidance behavior occurs between beetles. Frequencies of turn aways, touches, and crosses (three characteristics used to describe conspecific interaction) all increased significantly with beetle density. A threshold of three mating pairs within the 100- cm2 phloem area was the density at which avoidance behavior became evident. At a threshold of five mating pairs the number of gallery crossings was significantly greater than at lower densities. Single and paired female beetles introduced into artificial galleries crossed empty neighboring galleries significantly more often than when neighboring galleries were occupied with other D. frontalis. The data suggest that D. frontalis females can regulate gallery spacing within the host through their ability to detect nearby beetles and their galleries. Possible spacing mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

1 The western pine beetle Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is one of the most damaging insect pests of ponderosa pines Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex P. & C. Lawson in Western U.S.A. We compared the effect of verbenone, a well known bark beetle anti‐aggregation pheromone, with that of acetophenone on the attraction of D. brevicomis to its aggregation pheromone in a ponderosa pine forest in northern California. We tested the D. brevicomis aggregation pheromone alone and with three different release ratios of the aggregation pheromone (attractant) to verbenone or acetophenone (1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 1 : 5). 2 All treatments containing acetophenone or verbenone resulted in a significant reduction in the catch of D. brevicomis relative to the aggregation pheromone alone. When beetle responses to the three verbenone or three acetophenone treatments were pooled, the pooled verbenone treatment caught more D. brevicomis than the pooled acetophenone treatment. 3 There was no significant difference in the number of D. brevicomis caught among the three release rates of verbenone. By contrast, the 1 : 2 attractant : acetophenone ratio attracted significantly more D. brevicomis than the traps with the 1 : 5 attractant : acetophenone ratio. 4 Attraction of a major predator, Temnochila chlorodia (Mannerheim) (Coleoptera: Trogositidae), to the aggregation pheromone of D. brevicomis was reduced by verbenone, but not by acetophenone. Moreover, the T. chlorodia : D. brevicomis ratio for the pooled acetophenone treatment was 1.7‐fold greater than that for the attractant alone and two‐fold greater than the ratio for the pooled verbenone treatment, suggesting that acetophenone would not disrupt populations of this natural enemy. The importance of anti‐attractants in the biology of D. brevicomis and other bark beetles is discussed.  相似文献

Subtle differences in pheromone components of sympatric species should be attractive only to the producing species and unattractive or repellent to the nonproducing species, and thereby maintain reproductive isolation and reduce competition between species. Bark beetles Dendroctonus brevicomis and D. frontalis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) are known to have common pheromone components, except for exo-brevicomin, which is produced by D. brevicomis. We predicted that D. frontalis would not respond to exo-brevicomin outside of the zone of sympatry with D. brevicomis. We conducted a field experiment to determine the effect of exo-brevicomin on attraction of D. frontalis and associated species in Mississippi. We determined whether D. frontalis pheromone production differed inside and outside the sympatric zone and compared the pheromone profiles with D. brevicomis within the sympatric zone. Trapping studies revealed that D. frontalis can perceive and respond positively to exo-brevicomin, an aggregation pheromone of a sympatric congener (D. brevicomis), at locations hundreds of kilometers outside the sympatric zone. Qualitative pheromone profiles showed that both species emit similar pheromone components: frontalin, endo-brevicomin, exo-brevicomin, trans-verbenol, verbenone, and myrtenol. Although not previously reported, D. frontalis males from Arizona produced exo-brevicomin. The predator Thanasimus dubius did not discriminate traps baited with exo-brevicomin and was most attracted to traps with frontalin. Hylastes beetles were significantly attracted to traps baited with exo-brevicomin in combination with other compounds. Our results raise new practical and evolutionary questions on the role of exo-brevicomin in the behavioral ecology of D. frontalis. The addition of exo-brevicomin to the current lure might increase the efficiency of trapping programs in the southeastern United States.  相似文献

The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is a major coleopteran pest in flour mills and storage facilities. An aggregation pheromone has been identified for this pest; however, the pheromone is of limited value for population monitoring. To develop more efficient methods to monitor this pest, experiments were conducted to determine whether light functioned as an attractant for the red flour beetle. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of various wavelengths were examined as light sources because they produce bright, narrow light spectra. A comparison of responses to light spectra across the visible and UV regions of the electromagnetic spectrum indicated that the beetle was most attracted to near UV LED at a 390 nm dominant wavelength. The use of LEDs in competitive laboratory experiments resulted in a 20% capture of released beetles, compared with a 1% capture with the aggregation pheromone alone. Even more beetles were captured with a combination of LEDs and commercially available chemical lures in traps. LEDs can easily be added onto existing trap designs or new traps can be designed to take full advantage of positive phototaxis.  相似文献

Olfactory sensitivity of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, to compounds isolated from the mid/hindguts of newly emerged conspecific adults was assayed with coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection. All previously reported pheromones for D. frontalis plus eight additional compounds (fenchyl alcohol, myrtenal, cis-verbenol, trans-pinocarveol, acetophenone, trans-myrtanol, cis-myrtanol, and 2-phenylethanol) consistently elicited antennal responses from at least one sex. The eight additional compounds were assayed individually at three release rates (0.4-0.8, 3-9, and 25-100 mg/d) for the ability to alter D. frontalis responses to traps baited with D. frontalis attractant (4 mg/d frontalin and 17 mg/d alpha-pinene). At the high release rate, cis-verbenol enhanced attraction of D. frontalis females, whereas the other seven compounds significantly reduced attraction of one or both sexes. Acetophenone significantly reduced attraction of male D. frontalis at the low release rate, and five compounds (fenchyl alcohol, trans-pinocarveol, acetophenone, cis-myrtanol, and 2-phenylethanol) reduced attraction of one or both sexes at the intermediate rate. Only acetophenone significantly altered the sex ratio of beetles trapped, decreasing the proportion of males. Attraction of predatory checkered beetles (Cleridae) was enhanced by cis-verbenol released at the high rate but was not altered by any compound inhibitory to D. frontalis. Analyses of volatiles from individual D. frontalis indicated that the majority of the eight compounds were produced in greater quantities by newly emerged beetles than ones attacking pine bolts. Five of the compounds were associated predominantly with one sex. Possible ecological roles of these compounds in the biology of D. frontalis are discussed.  相似文献

Timing of arrival at a resource often determines an individual’s reproductive success. Tree-killing bark beetles can reproduce in healthy trees by attacking in adequate numbers to overcome host defences that could otherwise be lethal. This process is mediated by aggregation and antiaggregation pheromones. Beetles that arrive early in such a “mass attack” must contend with undiminished tree defences, and produce enough pheromones to attract more beetles, but have a head start on gallery construction and egg-laying. Beetles that arrive late may be impeded by competition and diminishing availability of phloem, but should experience fewer costs associated with pheromone production and battling tree defences. We investigated relationships between timing of arrival, body size, pheromone production and fitness in the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis. In field experiments, we captured beetles that arrived early (pioneers) and late on slash pine trees, Pinus elliottii, and measured pheromone amounts in their hindguts. We marked gallery entrances of beetles as they landed on a tree and measured their reproductive success after the attack terminated. We found no difference in body size or pheromone amounts between early and late arrivers. Most beetles arrived at the middle of the attack sequence, and excavated longer galleries per day than early arrivers. The number of offspring produced per day by beetles that established galleries midway through mass attack was higher than those that arrived early or very late in the sequence. Our results suggest that beetles do not exhibit adaptive phenotypic plasticity in pre-landing pheromone production, depending on the extent of previous colonisation of a host. Rather, it appears that stabilising selection favours beetles that attack in the middle of the sequence, and contributes to attack synchrony. Synchronous attack on trees is essential before population booms characteristic of tree-killing bark beetles can occur in nature.  相似文献

Abstract:  The orientation of the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata , to a male-produced aggregation pheromone, ( S )-3,7-dimethyl-2-oxo-oct-6-ene-1,3-diol, a three-component plant attractant blend [comprised of ( Z )-3-hexenyl acetate + (±)-linalool + methyl salicylate], and other potato volatiles (nonanal and 2-phenylethanol) were tested. All compounds were previously shown to be active in coupled gas chromatography/electroantennogram experiments. Both the three-component plant attractant blend and 2-phenylethanol were attractive to adult beetles. While male beetles oriented preferentially to both plant attractants vs. a control, females showed little preference. Combining the plant attractants with the pheromone resulted in sexually dimorphic responses similar to those seen with either plant attractant alone. Addition of nonanal abolished the sexually dimorphic response to the pheromone + 2-phenylethanol blend; the new three-component blend was attractive to both sexes. In both laboratory bioassays and field experiments, a combination of the pheromone + the three-component plant attractant was preferred over the plant attractant alone. Thus, it seems likely that combinations of pheromone + plant volatiles may be the most efficacious for field use.  相似文献

We treated Norway spruce (Picea abies) stems with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) to determine possible quantitative and qualitative effects of induced tree defenses on pheromone emission by the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. We measured the amounts of 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and (S)-cis-verbenol, the two main components of the beetle's aggregation pheromone, released from beetle entrance holes, along with phloem terpene content and beetle performance in MeJA-treated and untreated Norway spruce logs. As expected, phloem terpene levels were higher and beetle tunnel length was shorter (an indication of poor performance) in MeJA-treated logs relative to untreated logs. Parallel to the higher phloem terpene content and poorer beetle performance, beetles in MeJA-treated logs released significantly less 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and (S)-cis-verbenol, and the ratio between the two pheromone components was significantly altered. These results suggest that host resistance elicited by MeJA application reduces pheromone emission by I. typographus and alters the critical ratio between the two main pheromone components needed to elicit aggregation. The results also provide a mechanistic explanation for the reduced performance and attractivity observed in earlier studies when bark beetles colonize trees with elicited host defenses, and extend our understanding of the ecological functions of conifer resistance against bark beetles.  相似文献

The first aggregation pheromone components from bark beetles were identified in 1966 as a mixture of ipsdienol, ipsenol and verbenol. Since then, a number of additional components have been identified as both aggregation and anti-aggregation pheromones, with many of them being monoterpenoids or derived from monoterpenoids. The structural similarity between the major pheromone components of bark beetles and the monoterpenes found in the host trees, along with the association of monoterpenoid production with plant tissue, led to the paradigm that most if not all bark beetle pheromone components were derived from host tree precursors, often with a simple hydroxylation producing the pheromone. In the 1990s there was a paradigm shift as evidence for de novo biosynthesis of pheromone components began to accumulate, and it is now recognized that most bark beetle monoterpenoid aggregation pheromone components are biosynthesized de novo. The bark beetle aggregation pheromones are released from the frass, which is consistent with the isoprenoid aggregation pheromones, including ipsdienol, ipsenol and frontalin, being produced in midgut tissue. It appears that exo-brevocomin is produced de novo in fat body tissue, and that verbenol, verbenone and verbenene are produced from dietary α-pinene in fat body tissue. Combined biochemical, molecular and functional genomics studies in Ips pini yielded the discovery and characterization of the enzymes that convert mevalonate pathway intermediates to pheromone components, including a novel bifunctional geranyl diphosphate synthase/myrcene synthase, a cytochrome P450 that hydroxylates myrcene to ipsdienol, and an oxidoreductase that interconverts ipsdienol and ipsdienone to achieve the appropriate stereochemistry of ipsdienol for pheromonal activity. Furthermore, the regulation of these genes and their corresponding enzymes proved complex and diverse in different species. Mevalonate pathway genes in pheromone producing male I. pini have much higher basal levels than in females, and feeding induces their expression. In I. duplicatus and I. pini, juvenile hormone III (JH III) induces pheromone production in the absence of feeding, whereas in I. paraconfusus and I. confusus, topically applied JH III does not induce pheromone production. In all four species, feeding induces pheromone production. While many of the details of pheromone production, including the site of synthesis, pathways and knowledge of the enzymes involved are known for Ips, less is known about pheromone production in Dendroctonus. Functional genomics studies are under way in D. ponderosae, which should rapidly increase our understanding of pheromone production in this genus. This chapter presents a historical development of what is known about pheromone production in bark beetles, emphasizes the genomic and post-genomic work in I. pini and points out areas where research is needed to obtain a more complete understanding of pheromone production.  相似文献

Reproductive success in the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, is determined by the production of aggregation and antiaggregation pheromones, as well as body size. In a laboratory experiment with beetles that emerged from naturally attacked hosts, there was no relationship between body size and the production of aggregation pheromones in either sex. In contrast, there were significant relationships between body size and the production of antiaggregation pheromones in males that were paired with females. Pheromone amounts decreased in paired females and antiaggregation pheromones correspondingly increased in paired males, suggesting that after pairing, males take over the role of pheromone production. Although males could potentially select large females by evaluating gallery size, and females could select large males on the basis of their strength in stridulation or physical courtship, we propose that mate choice occurs primarily by olfaction. Small individuals that produce large amounts of pheromone during initial attack could sabotage mate choice based on size-related criteria. This hypothesis is consistent with a lack of evidence for size assortative mating in 92 pairs of beetles. The production of antiaggregants by large male D. ponderosae after pairing with females appears to be an important factor in intraspecific resource partitioning, population regulation, and reproductive success.  相似文献

An environmentally friendly control strategy for the ambrosia beetle Platypus koryoensis (Murayama), a vector of oak wilt disease, was investigated using the citral as a pheromone component. To develop an effective attractant trap, a semi‐field experiment (Yeoju) and a field experiment (Gunpo) were performed. Different ratios of four different attractant mixtures (ethanol 100 %, ethanol + citral (90:10, 95:5), ethanol + citral + hexane extract of Quercus mongolica (90:5:5)) were investigated to determine their effects on P. koryoensis. The 95:5 mixture of ethanol + citral had the greatest attractant effect on P. koryoensis. However, other ambrosia beetle species did not exhibit a specific response to citral. Our findings indicate that the pheromone citral was effective at attracting P. koryoensis and that certain concentrations of citral could be used to develop an effective and environmentally friendly control agent.  相似文献

The previously reported attractant chirp of male Dendroctonus pseudotsugae changed to a distinctive long interrupted chirp after several minutes in the female gallery, and the same chirp occurred during fighting with another male. It was experimentally evoked by synthetic 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-one and frontalin, both known pheromone components of the male. A different, short, uninterrupted male chirp emitted shortly before copulation, was not evoked by these pheromones. It is suggested that chemostimulus allows or maintains dual contexts for the interrupted chirp. Observation of premating and mating behaviour showed some initial male aggressiveness with the female that subsided as gallery cooperation was established before mating and as the uninterrupted chirp replaced the interrupted chirp.  相似文献

The kairomonal activity of the attractant pheromone for the spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was investigated by exposing fresh pentatomid egg masses in field traps with or without synthetic pheromone. Predominantly two parasitoids were recovered from exposed eggs of P. maculiventris and Euschistus obscurus: Telenomus podisi Ashmead (a generalist pentatomid egg parasitoid) and Telenomus calvus Johnson (a phoretic specialist on Podisus eggs) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). The incidences of T. podisi from P. maculiventris and E. obscurus eggs placed in pheromone-baited and nonbaited traps were not significantly different, suggesting that this oophagous wasp does not use the spined soldier bug attractant pheromone as a kairomone. However, T. calvus was reared almost exclusively from egg masses of P. maculiventris placed inside pheromone-baited traps. These results suggest that T. calvus females orient to volatile chemicals emitted by spined soldier bug males as a searching strategy to find areas likely to contain host eggs, in addition to the previously discovered strategy of using the pheromone to guide their phoretic behavior. The data also indicate that T. calvus can distinguish between the egg masses of these pentatomid hosts at close range.  相似文献

Abstract .1. The nature of intraspecific competition was investigated in the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis , a highly destructive pest of pine forests in the southern U.S.A. Data were analysed from an observational study of naturally-attacked trees, and from field experiments where attack density was manipulated by adding different numbers of beetles to caged trees.
2. The effect of attack density on gallery construction, oviposition, brood survival, and the overall rate of increase was examined, and a flexible model of intraspecific competition used to classify the type of competition (contest or scramble) at different points in the life cycle.
3. The results of these analyses suggest that contest competition occurs during gallery construction and oviposition, in accord with previous work on D. frontalis . Strong scramble competition occurs later on in development, however, and the overall competitive process is better characterized as scramble competition, similar to other bark beetles. Trees with attack densities sufficiently high to produce significant competition are common in the field.  相似文献

Pine-feeding bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) interact chemically with their host pines (Coniferales: Pinaceae) via the behavioral, physiological, and biochemical effects of one class of isoprenoids, the monoterpenes and their derivatives. Pine monoterpenes occur in the oleoresin and function as behaviorally active kairomones for pine bark beetles and their predators, presenting a classic example of tri-trophic chemical communication. The monoterpenes are also essential co-attractants for pine bark beetle aggregation pheromones. Ironically, pine monoterpenes are also toxic physiologically to bark beetles at high vapor concentrations and are considered an important component of the defense of pines. Research over the last 30 years has demonstrated that some bark beetle aggregation pheromones arise through oxygenation of monoterpenes, linking pheromone biosynthesis to the host pines. Over the last 10 years, however, several frequently occurring oxygenated monoterpene pheromone components (e.g., ipsenol, ipsdienol and frontalin) have also been shown to arise through highly regulated de novo pathways in the beetles (reviewed in Seybold and Tittiger, 2003). The most interesting nexus between these insects and their plant hosts involves the late-stage reactions in the monoterpenoid biosynthetic pathway, during which isomeric dimethylallyl diphosphate and isopentenyl diphosphate are ultimately elaborated to stereospecific monoterpenes in the trees and to hydroxylated monoterpenes or bicyclic acetals in the insects. There is signal stereospecificity in both production of and response to the monoterpenoid aggregation pheromones of bark beetles and in response to␣the monoterpenes of the pines. In the California fivespined ips, Ips paraconfusus, we have discovered a number of cytochome P450 genes that have expression patterns indicating that they may be involved in detoxifying monoterpene secondary metabolites and/or biosynthesizing pheromone components. Both processes result in the production of oxygenated monoterpenes, likely with varying degrees of stereospecificity. A behavioral analysis of the stereospecific response of I. paraconfusus to its pheromone is providing new insights into the development of an efficacious bait for the detection of this polyphagous insect in areas outside the western United States. In contrast, a Eurasian species that has arrived in California, the Mediterranean pine engraver, Orthotomicus (Ips) erosus, utilizes both a monoterpenoid (ipsdienol) and a hemiterpenoid (2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol) in its pheromone blend. The stereospecificity of the response of O. erosus to the monoterpenoid appears to be the key factor to the improved potency of the attractant bait for this invasive species.Dedicated to Professor David L. Wood on the occasion of his 75th birthday, January 8, 2006  相似文献

Abstract 1. Bark beetles and their predators are useful systems for addressing questions concerning diet breadth and prey preference in arthropod natural enemies. These predators use bark beetle pheromones to locate their prey, and the response to different pheromones is a measure of prey preference. 2. Trapping experiments were conducted to examine geographic variation in the response to prey pheromones by two bark beetle predators, Thanasimus dubius and Temnochila virescens. The experiments used pheromones for several Dendroctonus and Ips prey species (frontalin, ipsdienol, and ipsenol) and manipulated visual cues involved in prey location (black vs. white traps). The study sites included regions where the frontalin‐emitter Dendroctonus frontalis was in outbreak vs. endemic or absent. 3. There was significant geographic variation in pheromone preference for T. dubius. This predator strongly preferred a pheromone (frontalin) associated with D. frontalis at outbreak sites, while preference was more even at endemic and absent sites. No geographic variation was found in the response by T. virescens. White traps caught fewer insects than black traps for both predators, suggesting that visual cues are also important in prey location. 4. The overall pattern for T. dubius is consistent with switching or optimal foraging theory, assuming D. frontalis is a higher quality prey than Ips. The two predator species partition the prey pheromones in areas where D. frontalis is abundant, possibly to minimise competition and intraguild predation.  相似文献

We report here that (4R,9Z)-hexadec-9-en-4-olide [(R)-desmolactone] is a sex attractant or sex pheromone for multiple species and subspecies in the cerambycid genus Desmocerus. This compound was previously identified as a female-produced sex attractant pheromone of Desmocerus californicus californicus. Headspace volatiles from female Desmocerus aureipennis aureipennis contained (R)-desmolactone, and the antennae of adult males of two species responded strongly to synthetic (R)-desmolactone in coupled gas chromatography-electroantennogram analyses. In field bioassays in California, Oregon, and British Columbia, traps baited with synthetic (R)-desmolactone captured males of several Desmocerus species and subspecies. Only male beetles were captured, indicating that this compound acts as a sex-specific attractant, rather than as a signal for aggregation. In targeted field bioassays, males of the US federally threatened subspecies Desmocerus californicus dimorphus responded to the synthetic attractant in a dose dependent manner. Our results represent the first example of a “generic” sex pheromone used by multiple species in the subfamily Lepturinae, and demonstrate that pheromone-baited traps may be a sensitive and efficient method of monitoring the threatened species Desmocerus californicus dimorphus, commonly known as the valley elderberry longhorn beetle.  相似文献

Field-collected Dendroctonus frontalis were reared in a controlled environment. Male-female beetle pairs retrieved from galleries 1, 2, or 5 wk after introduction into pine bolts were examined for nematode parasites. Data were obtained for each pair on gallery length, egg niche construction, egg viability, and progeny survival. In a separate study, beetle pairs were reared under laboratory conditions for 10 wk. The number of emerged adult progeny of each pair was recorded. Contortylenchus brevicomi, a nematode parasite, was found in 25% of all beetles that established galleries. After 2 and 3 wk, female beetles infected with the nematode had produced fewer eggs and shorter galleries than did uninfected females. Uninfected females mated with nematode-infected males showed similar trends, although the differences in the 2- and 3-wk tests were not significant. Progeny survival or egg viability was not affected by nematode parasitism of either parent beetle. Unikaryon minutum, a microsporidian parasite found in 65% of all colonizing beetles, had no effect on measured variables. The lower fecundity of beetles parasitized by C. brevicomi continued throughout the insect''s reproductive cycle. After 10 wk, nematode-infected beetle pairs produced fewer emerged adult progeny than did uninfected pairs.  相似文献

Abstract 1 The attractiveness of potato plants treated with a synthetic host volatile blend [(Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate (+/–)‐linalool, and methyl salicylate] to newly emerged and 5‐day‐old adult Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), was compared at four doses against untreated control plants and plants treated with an azadirachtin‐based antifeedant in greenhouse cage arenas. 2 Attractant‐treated plants (derived release rates of 0, 5.7, 17.1 or 57 µg/h) were significantly more attractive than untreated control plants to newly emerged and 5‐day‐old adults only at 57 µg/h. 3 Attractant‐treated plants were significantly more attractive than antifeedant‐treated plants to newly emerged and 5‐day‐old adults at the 5.7 µg/h treatment level and higher. Mean insect density on attractant‐treated plants in the attractant/antifeedant study was significantly higher than in the attractant/control study. 4 Habituation to the synthetic attractant was evaluated by exposing adult beetles to the synthetic attractant for 0, 1, 2.5, 4, 8, 12 or 16 h, before release into a wind tunnel in which an attractant‐baited plant model was placed at the upwind end. Insects exposed to the synthetic host attractant for ≤ 8 h moved to the synthetic attractant‐baited plant model whereas insects exposed to the synthetic host attractant for 12 and 16 h did not. Furthermore, beetles exposed to the synthetic attractant for 0 and 1 h moved at rates greater than, or equal to, the median whereas beetles exposed for longer time periods moved at rates significantly less than the median. 5 These results demonstrate the potential for using the synthetic plant attractant and an antifeedant as components in a stimulo‐deterrent strategy for management of the Colorado potato beetle as shown by us in another study.  相似文献
