Males and females of Copidosoma koehleri were kept separately in desiccators producing relative humidities of 20, 40 and 70% at 24 and 28°C and found to be very susceptible to low relative humidity. They lived less than 1 day at 20%, about 2 and 4 days at 40% and about six times longer than these respectively at 70% r.h. When kept at 26°C and 70% r.h. females of C. koehleri parasitised 98.8 hosts. The number of parasites that emerged from a male brood was 21.2 and from a female brood 33.2. Mated females produced 3026 progeny and unmated 2289. The sex ratio of broods produced by mated females was 1:1 and the female percentage among progeny was 59. It is known that C. koehleri is rare at the beginning of the potato-growing season and becomes the predominant parasite later on. It is known also that in potato crops when the plants are small at the beginning of the season the air within the crop is less humid but as the canopy of foliage develops, relative humidity rises and becomes higher than at 1.2 m above ground. It is suggested that relative humidity in the potato crop is the major factor affecting the relative abundance of C. koehleri and Apanteles subandinus in South Africa.  相似文献

The concentration of pollen in the air within diploid open-pollinated sugar-beet seed crops at Broom's Barn Experimental Station increased between 05.00 and 09.00 G.M.T. as relative humidity became less than 90%, was greatest between 09.00 and 11.00, when relative humidity was c. 75%, and gradually decreased towards evening. The average pollen concentration during 24 h periods ranged from 170 to 12400/m3 being greatest on fine, windy, dry days after periods of cooler weather. Rain during the morning washed pollen out of the air and damaged developing anthers, but rain in the late afternoon following a sunny morning seemed hardly to affect the pollen catch, while rain at night sometimes caused an immediate temporary increase in pollen concentration. Most pollen was released between 27 June and 31 July in all years (1965-7); more in the first than in the second half of July. 1965 was cool and damp, 1967 warm and dry, 1966 warm and dry early, and cool and wet late. The total pollen catch in 1965 was 83% and in 1966 31% of that in 1967 but the percentage germination of seed harvested in the 3 years was similar. The total pollen catch on a trap 230 m east of the 1965 crop was c. 1% of the catch within the crop on days with gusty westerly winds and the catch on a trap c. 46 cm above the 1966 crop averaged 78.6% of that at the level of most flowers.  相似文献

The relationships between rain and blight (Phytophthora infestans) were studied in unsprayed crops of cultivars differing widely in foliage and tuber susceptibility. The occasions when tubers were infected depended on rain and not cultivar, but numbers of tubers infected after rain was affected by the blight susceptibility of the cultivar. Infected tubers were first found when less than 5 % (BMS key) of the potato foliage was infected but few fresh infections occurred when 50–75% of the foliage had been destroyed. Some tubers were infected after 8 mm rain (tubers near the surface with even less) but large increases in numbers of tubers infected usually occurred only after 25 mm or more had increased soil moisture to above ‘field capacity’ around the tuber for at least 24 h. The most susceptible cultivars Ulster Ensign and Arran Banner had all plants with some tuber blight, and some plants with all tubers affected and often many lesions per tuber. Cultivars of intermediate susceptibility, King Edward and Up-to-Date, had some plants without blighted tubers, many with a few and very few with all. The more resistant cultivars Majestic and Arran Viking had many plants without infected tubers and many lesions that aborted while still necrotic threads, so that the fungus did not spread. Most infections occurred through tuber eyes, lenticels or sometimes growth cracks. The distribution of blight lesions on tubers differed in the different seasons, for example, lenticels were most commonly infected on Arran Banner and Ulster Ensign and eyes on King Edward, Majestic and Arran Viking. In late or slowly developing attacks, lesions on stems became more numerous and larger than in fast, early attacks and were prolific sources of spores on King Edward and Up-to-Date but not on Majestic and Arran Viking. Because much rain water runs down the stems of Up-to-Date and King Edward, stem lesions can provide an important source of inoculum for tubers.  相似文献

Alternaria solani Soraeur produces early blight in Solanum tuberosum L., leading to significant agricultural losses. The current study was carried out on the extensive potato crop situated in north-western of Spain during 2007, 2008 and 2009. In this area potato crops are the most important source of income. In this work we used a Hirst-type volumetric spore-trap for the aerobiological monitoring of Alternaria spores. The highest spore concentrations were recorded during the 2009 cycle (10,555 spores), and the lowest concentrations were recorded during the 2008 cycle (5,471 spores). Over the 3 years of study, the highest concentrations were registered during the last stage of the crop. The aim of the study was to observe the influence of meteorological factors on the concentration of Alternaria spores, which can lead to serious infection and early blight. Prediction of the stages during which a crop is particularly vulnerable to infection allows for adjustment of the application of fungicide and is of environmental and agricultural importance. For this reason, we tested three models (P-Days, DD and IWP) to predict the first treatment and decrease the negative effect that these spores have on potato crops. The parameter that showed the most significant correlation with spore concentrations was minimum temperature. We used ARIMA (autoregressive integrated model of running mean) time-series models to determine the forecast. We considered weather data as predictor variables and the concentration of spores on the previous day as the fixed variable.  相似文献

A new procedure was developed for interpreting data from multi-harvest N-fertilizer experiments on 5 different vegetable crops. Per cent N in the plant dry matter of each N-deficient crop was, throughout growth, almost proportional to relative growth rate (standardized to the average weather). After correcting for the effects of plant mass, growth rate of each N-sufficient crop varied considerably during the growth period and approximately in proportion to the growth rate when N-fertilizer was withheld. Some of the variation was associated with small changes in soil water which also greatly influenced C-partition between foliage and storage roots of at least one crop. Some of the variation was related to temperature and radiation. The significance of these findings to modeling the effects of N-nutrition and environment on growth is discussed.  相似文献

Crop losses caused by the tomato potato psyllid (TPP; Bactericera cockerelli) and blight (Alternaria solani; Phytophthora infestans) continue to be major concerns for potato (Solanum tuberosum) growers worldwide, and commercial crops often require frequent use of agrichemicals to maintain tuber yield and quality. Nevertheless, a paradigm shift is unfolding in crop protection where new tools, such as physical barriers and light‐modifying filters, are being used to develop chemical‐free approaches for pest and disease control. In this study, we examined the use of crop covers as a non‐chemical method for controlling TPP and reducing blight in field potatoes. Our study demonstrated that those plants grown under mesh covers exhibited reduced levels of blight, TPP and associated psyllid yellows. Additionally, potatoes grown under mesh covers exhibited increased yield (91.4 ± 6.9 SD t/ha) compared with both uncovered control plants (75.0 ± 11.8 t/ha) and plants grown using agrichemical pest control (84.5 ± 10.8 t/ha). The plants grown under mesh produced fewer smaller tubers, with increased average and maximum tuber size, so that marketable yield (tubers ≥60 g) was also increased (83.5 ± 7.5 t/ha), compared with that achieved for uncovered control plants (60.0 ± 8.3 t/ha) and plants grown using agrichemicals (69.6 ± 9.2 t/ha). A second field experiment suggested that the incidence of TPP foliage damage and the development of blight were lowest when the passage of ambient ultraviolet (UV) radiation through the crop cover was reduced. This hypothesis was supported by a third trial where potatoes grown outdoors in pots exhibited reduced TPP foliage damage and fewer resident TPP when grown under UV‐blocking plastic screens. The results of these experiments suggest that the use of mesh covers offers new opportunities to sustainably protect potato crops both by acting as a physical barrier and by modifying the wavelength of light incident on the crop.  相似文献

Alternaria brassicicola lesions present on overwintered leaf litter of Brassica oleracea seed production crops produced high concentrations of spores in the spring, these were able to initiate new infections on foliage and subsequently on inflorescences and pods. A vertical disease gradient developed in maturing crops, the lowest pods becoming infected first and infection spreading slowly upwards. Spores were produced abundantly after 20 h leaf wetness at a mean temperature of 13°C or more. Their release was stimulated by a fall in relative humidity but inhibited at a constant high relative humidity resulting in a daily cycle in air spore concentrations with minimum numbers occurring in the early morning and maximum numbers in the early afternoon. For most of the growing season spore movement was restricted to within the crop, however, massive release of spores and subsequent distribution over a wide area occurred when the crop was cut and later threshed. Using semi-selective agar traps spores released at these times were detected up to 1800 m downwind of the parent crop and were instrumental in infecting nearby young crops destined for seed production in the following season.  相似文献

Examination of the East Midlands records of potato blight epidemics and the meteorological data on critical 90 % relative humidity infection periods for the years 1923–74 indicates the importance of the amount of inoculum carried over from one season to the next in influencing the rapidity of progress of the disease and the date of destruction of the haulm. The success of forecasting outbreaks based on 90% r.h. periods is reviewed. The importance of taking into account both amount of inoculum and weather conditions in devising a disease control programme is discussed. It is concluded that the succession of seasons since 1968 without a major potato blight epidemic was due mainly to a combination of low carry-over of infection and sub-optimal weather conditions for the development of the disease and that the current control measures have not yet been subjected to a severe test.  相似文献

Interval mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resistance to late blight, height, and maturity was performed on a tetraploid full-sib family of potato comprising 227 clones from a cross between a susceptible parent, 12601ab1, and a resistant cultivar, Stirling, which were of similar height and main crop maturity. Thirty-eight AFLP primer combinations provided 585 informative markers, and 23 SSRs proved useful for identifying linkage groups (LGs). A simplex QTL allele was found on LGV of Stirling close to marker STM3179, which was associated with early maturity, short plants, and susceptibility to blight and explained 54.7, 26.5, 26.3, and 17.5% of the variation for maturity, height, tuber blight, and foliage blight. When the residuals from the regressions of foliage and tuber blight on maturity were analyzed, there was no significant effect of a QTL on LGV, but a duplex QTL allele for resistance was found on LGIV of Stirling, which explained 30.7 and 13.6% of the variation for foliage and tuber blight on an additive model. Partial dominance for resistance explained even more of the variation, up to 37.2% for foliage blight. A major gene for blight resistance in Stirling was also mapped to LGXI.  相似文献

The impact of climate change on dispersal processes is largely ignored in risk assessments for crop diseases, as inoculum is generally assumed to be ubiquitous and nonlimiting. We suggest that consideration of the impact of climate change on the connectivity of crops for inoculum transmission may provide additional explanatory and predictive power in disease risk assessments, leading to improved recommendations for agricultural adaptation to climate change. In this study, a crop‐growth model was combined with aerobiological models and a newly developed infection risk model to provide a framework for quantifying the impact of future climates on the risk of disease occurrence and spread. The integrated model uses standard meteorological variables and can be easily adapted to various crop pathosystems characterized by airborne inoculum. In a case study, the framework was used with data defining the spatial distribution of potato crops in Scotland and spatially coherent, probabilistic climate change data to project the future connectivity of crop distributions for Phytophthora infestans (causal agent of potato late blight) inoculum and the subsequent risk of infection. Projections and control recommendations are provided for multiple combinations of potato cultivar and CO2 emissions scenario, and temporal and spatial averaging schemes. Overall, we found that relative to current climatic conditions, the risk of late blight will increase in Scotland during the first half of the potato growing season and decrease during the second half. To guide adaptation strategies, we also investigated the potential impact of climate change‐driven shifts in the cropping season. Advancing the start of the potato growing season by 1 month proved to be an effective strategy from both an agronomic and late blight management perspective.  相似文献

Reproducible results were obtained when adhesive traps for aphides were placed at the same height in different parts of a potato field. The total catches in different localities in different seasons can therefore justifiably be compared. During the summer dispersal flights, different species flew at different heights, so traps at one height only are not suitable for comparing the relative abundance of different species. There was less variation in numbers caught on traps at 3–4 ft. above the ground than on traps at 5–6 ft. or at ground-level.
During the first fortnight of July an average of 200 aphides, 1.6% of which were Myzus persicae , was caught on traps in the position of potato plants. Most of these were not potato aphides, but it is suggested that some of them might act as vectors of potato viruses. The number of aphides caught was roughly proportional to the volume of free air space around the traps, and as the foliage increased in density the numbers caught on lower traps decreased in proportion.
Wind-speed records within and above the crop are discussed and it is shown that conditions are often suitable for voluntary aphis flight in and near the crop on relatively windy days. Records of catches on the half-traps facing the wind and on the other halves showed that voluntary flight decreased with increasing height.
Brilliant yellow traps, coated with adhesive grease, caught more aphides than white traps, which in turn caught more than black.  相似文献

Late blight caused by the oomycete Phytophthora infestans is the most important fungal disease in potato cultivation worldwide. Resistance to late blight is controlled by a few major genes (R genes) which can be easily overcome by new races of P. infestans and/or by an unknown number of genes expressing a quantitative type of resistance which may be more durable. Quantitative resistance of foliage to late blight was evaluated in five F1 hybrid families originating from crosses among seven different diploid potato clones. Tuber resistance was evaluated in four of the families. Two of the families were scored for both foliage maturity and vigour. The five families were genotyped with DNA-based markers and tested for linkage with the traits analysed. QTL (quantitative trait locus) analysis identified at least twelve segments on ten chromosomes of potato having genes that affect reproducibly foliage resistance. Two of those segments also have major R genes for resistance to late blight. The segments are tagged by 21 markers that can be analyzed based on PCR (polymerase chain reaction) with specific oligonucleotide primers. One QTL was detected for tuber resistance and one for foliage vigour. Two QTLs were mapped for foliage maturity. Major QTL effects on foliage and tuber resistance to late blight and on foliage maturity and vigour were all linked with marker GP179 on linkage group V of potato. Plants having alleles at this QTL, which increased foliage resistance, exhibited decreased tuber resistance, later maturity and more vigour.  相似文献

本文根据1988-1991年陇东黄土旱塬作物组合模式(即作物轮作与复种模式)田间试验土壤水分测定资料,对作物组合系统中主要组分作物田间耗水量及其构成特征、变异规律及农田土壤水分的利用程度进行了研究,并探讨了不同作物组合系统的田间耗水量及其构成特征。结果表明,不同作物组合系统的田间耗水量及其构成特征存在明显差异;作物田间耗水量是一个动态变量,因作物种类、降水年型等不同而异,并与生育期有效降水量呈显著正相关;来自播前土壤有效储水的土壤供水量对秋播作物冬小麦和冬油菜生育期水分不足有重要补偿作用,是维持其较高的生产稳定性的关键原因;无论丰水年还是欠水年,冬小麦、玉米、谷子和马铃薯4种主要作物在农田水分利用程度上均存在一定差异。  相似文献

Summary Isolates ofRhizoctonia solani from web blight and stem basal canker of cowpea and those obtained from soil had similar linear growth rates on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at various temperatures but differed in other features. The web blight isolates differed from the basal canker and the soil isolates in cultural appearance on PDA and on potato marmite agar (PMA). The web blight isolates readily formed discrete sclerotia on PDA, PMA and soil but the other isolates did not. In greenhouse tests, the former were generally the most virulent in inciting foliage and stem basal necrosis and damping-off of seven crop species. Of the plants tested, the legumes were the most susceptible toR. solani.  相似文献

Field resistance to Phytophthora infestans, the causal agent of foliage and tuber blight in cultivated potatoes, earliness (maturity) and vigour, were examined in a diploid segregating potato population grown in replicated trials over three consecutive growing seasons. A genetic linkage map of this population was constructed in parallel using PCR-based SSR, AFLP and CAPS markers. Analysis of the trait scores alongside the marker segregation data allowed the identification of regions of the genome which were significantly correlated with components of the respective characters. The most significant associations for all four traits were with marker alleles on potato linkage group V originating from the male (susceptible) parent. In the case of foliage resistance to late blight, the positions of the majority of the effects, which were located on eleven of the twelve potato linkage groups, have been detected in previous [16] and parallel studies [21]. The absence of Solanum demissum-derived R genes for hypersensitive response to late blight and the co-localisation of QTL for resistance, vigour and earliness suggest that developmental and/or physiological factors play a major role in determining the level of foliage resistance in this population. In contrast with previous findings, a negative correlation was found between foliage and tuber blight resistance.  相似文献

Simulator predictions for the effect of oxadixyl and oxadixyl mixtures on the control of late blight in potato crops inoculated with Phytophthora infestans and the buildup of fungal resistance to oxadixyl were compared with data obtained in field experiments. The simulator, which considered fungus, fungicides and crop variables, predicted accurately the effect of fungicide sprays (oxadixyl, oxadixyl mixed with mancozeb, and oxadixyl mixed with mancozeb and cymoxanil) on blight development. The model predicted accurately both resistance buildup and infection in non-treated crops and in crops treated with oxadixyl alone or in a mixture with mancozeb (SAN 518F), but overestimated the control efficacy of the three-way mixture Pulsan.  相似文献

Observations on plots of spring barley cv. Golden Promise during May-July 1973–79 showed that escalation of mildew commenced in mid-June 1976, in late June in 1973 and 1974, in early July in 1978 and 1979, and failed to develop in 1975 and 1977. By mid-July there was 40% infection in 1976, and 13–21% infection in 1973, 1974, 1978 and 1979. Less than 2% mildew occurred in 1975 and 1977. Using as a basis the method of mildew forecasting formulated by Polley & King (1973), it was found that once mildew was established in the crop there was moderately good association between the incidence of high mildew risk according to the Polley weather criteria and the major peaks of spore concentration above the crops. It was not possible to correlate these two features during May and early June each year because of a lack of inoculum, but it is considered that the failure of mildew to develop during the entire growing seasons of 1975 and 1977, in spite of frequent high risk periods, was due in part to low atmospheric humidity during the early part of the season. The relative number of accumulated Polley factors satisfied on days when the relative humidity approx. 1 m above ground was 78% or more (at 0900 GMT) during the period mid-May to mid-June, separated the low mildew years of 1975 and 1977 from the moderate ones of 1973, 1974, 1978 and 1979, and the severe mildew year of 1976. This procedure may provide a practical means of forecasting the level of mildew build-up during the later growth stages of the barley crop.  相似文献

Infection of hairy nightshade ( Solanum sarrachoides Sendt.) by Phytophthora infestans has been reported. However, the epidemiological significance of hairy nightshade to potato late blight is not well known. Disease development and infection rates of P. infestans were quantified on hairy nightshade relative to tomato (cv. Brandywine) and potato (cv. Shepody) hosts to evaluate infection potential at 14, 18, 22 and 26°C and 72, 82, 87, and 92% relative humidity (RH). The susceptibility of hairy nightshade to inoculum levels, weed ontogeny, and sporangia production potential were also investigated. Late blight development varied among hairy nightshade, tomato and potato hosts. Pathogen infection rates ranged from 0.0325 to 0.4674 gompits/day (unit for quantifying infection rates), and were significantly (P < 0.05) greater on potato and tomato than on hairy nightshade. Late blight severity was variably affected by RH. Disease levels on hairy nightshade varied with inoculum load; and ranged from 9 to 26% and 26 to 37% at low (5 × 103) and high (25 × 103) sporangia concentrations, respectively. Late blight was recorded irrespective of hairy nightshade ontogeny, and was significantly greater on 8–10 than 4–6-week-old plants. These results indicate that pathogen, environmental and host factors affect late blight development on hairy nightshade.  相似文献

A late blight epidemic studied at Toluca, Mexico, in 1962 may have started from stems infected at soil level by soil-borne Phytophthora infestans. Its severity was demonstrated by the large differences in the rate foliage was destroyed and in yield of tubers between fungicide-sprayed and unsprayed susceptible and resistant cultivars. The foliage resistances of some Mexican and European cultivars were compared using conventional blight keys and recording the destruction of marked leaves. Cultivars reacted in four ways: (1) Up-to-Date and Alpha leaves were infected and killed soon after plants emerged; (2) Bertita, Conchita and Florita abscissed many infected lower-canopy leaves, and many infections on upper leaves aborted; (3) Elenita leaves had a few lesions in which the fungus grew slowly but remained alive; (4) Greta showed no infection until the potato plants met between rows but then infections developed rapidly and the foliage soon died. Mexican cultivars, except for Elenita, had few blighted tubers; susceptible European cultivars were killed before many tubers formed. Most spores were released during the morning, as in Europe, and leaf infection seemed associated with days with rain when much of the night remained humid. Cool nights lengthened incubation and generation times.  相似文献

Field experiments were carried out in 2016 and 2017 to determine the effect of crop rotation on the onset of early blight in three potato varieties in Denmark. Six and seven fields with different histories with potato (rotation‐fields) were used for the experiments in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The results showed that variety and the interaction between variety and rotation‐field had no significant effect on the onset of early blight. Rotation‐field, on the other hand, had a significant effect on the onset of early blight in both years of the study. Early blight occurred earlier in fields with <2 years between subsequent potato crops than in fields where potatoes have not been grown for at least 2 years. The onset of early blight was not different between the fields where there had not been potatoes for at least 2 years. For fields that were preceded by potatoes, early blight occurred earlier in fields in which the severity of early blight in the previous years was higher than that in the fields in which the severity of early blight in the previous years was low or moderate. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that at least a 2‐year interval between subsequent potatoes in a rotation cycle is necessary to delay the onset of early blight. Moreover, the severity of early blight in the previous years can affect the onset of early blight.  相似文献
