The detection of small radially symmetric targets was studied using a subthreshold summation paradigm. Small disc and disc-like patterns with diameters up to 0.6 were used for superposition on Bessel functions of zero order, subthreshold contrast and various spatial frequencies. Contrast interrelation functions prove linear over the whole range of contrasts used for the Bessel functions while their slopes show systematic variation with spatial frequency. An extrapolation of sensitivity from the slopes reveals that sensitivity can be predicted by a simple model assuming detection to be mediated by a transfer function made up as a cascade of an even bandpass function and the disc pattern spectrum, as has been found previously using one dimensional luminance distributions. Problems concerning the formation of pattern-specific radial symmetric filters are discussed. Received: 31 January 2000 / Accepted in revised form: 16 June 2000  相似文献

Psychophysical thresholds for the detection of a 300-Hz burst of vibration applied to the thenar eminence were measured for stimuli applied to the skin through 1.5?cm2 and through 0.05?cm2 contactors. Thresholds were approximately 13?dB lower when the area of the contactor was 1.5?cm2 than when it was 0.05?cm2. The difference between the thresholds measured with the large and small contactors was significantly reduced when only the lowest thresholds obtained in the testing sessions were considered. This result supports the hypothesis that one component of spatial summation in the P channel is probability summation. In addition, threshold measurements within a session were less variable when measured with the 1.5?cm2 contactor. We conclude that spatial summation in the P channel is a joint function of two processes that occur as the areal extent of the stimulus increases: probability summation in which the probability of exceeding the psychophysical detection threshold increases as the number of receptors of varying sensitivities increases, and neural integration in which neural activity originating from separate receptors is combined within the central nervous system rendering the channel more sensitive to the stimulus.  相似文献

Threshold contrasts were determined for complex gratings made from pairs of sine-wave gratings with various spatial frequencies and contrast ratios. It was found that the plots representing the relationship between the contrast of two-component gratings with frequencies f 1=2.0 deg–1 and f 2=kf 1, (1.03 k 3.0), when the compound was at threshold (the so-called contrast threshold curves), tend to have either an elliptical (for k 1.5) or a rectangular (for k=3) form. Nevertheless, the elliptical fits as the matched-channel model predicted, and the roundedly rectangular fits, as the probability-summation models predicted, were very poor. Furthermore, statistical analysis shows that two of the six contrast threshold curves exhibiting a significant local disturbance fail to be convex.Theoretical treatment in terms of convex analysis shows that such a convexity violation of the contrast threshold curves rules out the possibility of detection being produced by a single linear channel as well as a parallel array of linear channels, either with or without probability summation, provided that the detection principle of the most sensitive channel is adopted. The adaptive matched-channel model originally proposed by Hauske cannot also account for the results obtained; however, it can be modified to be in line with them. We hypothesise that the detection in our experiment is likely to occur by means of several (no more than seven or eight) adaptive partially matched channels.  相似文献

The detection of compound sinusoidal gratings of various spatial frequency separations and four different grating sizes has been studied using the summation-to-threshold paradigm. Contrast interrelation functions have been measured and spatial frequency tuning estimates, based on the slope of the contrast interrelation function at two definite points, were derived using the “negative gradient technique” proposed by Logvinenko [Logvinenko (1995) Biol Cybern 73: 547–552]. It is shown that compound grating detection can be modelled by assuming pattern-specific sensory mechanisms for each of the spatial frequency components, which adapt to the periodicity and the size of the stimulus but not to its envelope function. Further, it is shown that relative sensitivity for a given spatial frequency separation can be predicted with good accuracy by the correlation of the grating components used for superposition. It is suggested that the most plausible implementation of the pattern correlation principle in human grating detection is the “grating cell” model. Within a wide class of multichannel models of the visual system it is suggested that spatial distributions of luminance are processed by the independent activation of grating detectors, or spatial frequency channels. Probability summation is often described in terms of Quick's nonlinear pooling model [Quick RF (1974) Kybernetik 16:65–67]. Using this model, we find evidence for the existence of different kinds of nonlinear summation at threshold; for compound gratings with well-separated spatial frequency components, the threshold functions indicate nonlinear summation which is not compatible with probability summation, while for line patterns well separated in the spatial domain the probability summation rule proves compatible with the data. It is now generally accepted that the human visual system consists of subsystems (channels) that may be activated in parallel. According to some models of detection, detection is by probability summation among channels, while in other models it is assumed that detection is by a single channel that may even be tuned specifically to the stimulus pattern (detection by a matched filter). So far, arguments in particular for the hypothesis of probbbility summation are based on plausibility considerations and on demonstrations that the data from certain detection experiments are compatible with this hypothesis. In this paper it is shown that linear contrast interrelationship functions together with a property of a large class of distribution functions (strict log-concavity or logconvexity on the relevant set of contrasts/intensities) uniquely point to detection by a single channel. In particular, models of detection by probability summation based on Quick's Model are incompatible with linear contrast interrelationship functions. Sufficient (and observable) conditions for the strict logconcavity/log-convexity of distribution functions are presented.  相似文献

Structure-activity relationships of 56 pentamethylenbis-ammonium compounds, the blockers of the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) ion channel, have been studied to estimate the cross-sectional dimensions of the channel pore. The cat superior cervical sympathetic ganglion in situ and isolated guinea pig ileum were used to evaluate the potency of the compounds to block ganglionic transmission. Minimum-energy conformations of each compound were calculated by the molecular mechanics method. A topographic model of the binding site of the blockers was proposed. It incorporates two narrowings, a large and a small one. The small narrowing is located between the large one and the cytoplasmic end of the pore. The cross-sectional dimensions of the large and small narrowings estimated from the dimensions of the blockers are 6.1 × 8.3 ? and 5.5 × 6.4 ?, respectively, the distance between the narrowings along the pore being approximately 7 ?. Most potent blockers would occlude the pore via binding to the channel at the levels of both narrowings. Less potent blockers are either too large or too small to bind to both narrowings simultaneously: large blockers would occlude the pore at the level of large narrowing, while small blockers would pass the large narrowing and occlude the pore at the level of small narrowing only. A comparison of the topographic model with a molecular five-helix bundle model of nAChR pore predicts Serine and Threonine rings to be the most probable candidates for the large and small narrowings, respectively. Context: Pregnancy-linked accelerated metabolism and oxidative stress may alter the exhaled volatile compound pattern (“breathprint”). Electronic noses can distinguish “breathprints” associated with different disorders.

Objective: This is the first study assessing alterations in “breathprint” during gestation.

Material and methods: 130 women participated in our study (78 pregnant vs. 52 non-pregnant). Breath samples were processed by an electronic nose and analyzed using principal component analysis.

Results: Significant differences were found in exhaled breath pattern between pregnant and non-pregnant women (p?=?0.001).

Conclusion: Pregnancy-induced changes in exhaled gases need to be considered when pregnant women with respiratory disorders carry out breath tests.  相似文献

Single sensillum recordings from Cydia pomonella male antennae showed three different types of receptor neurons. The most abundant type was most sensitive to the main pheromone compound (E,E)-8,10-dodecadienol, while its response to the geometric isomers E,Z, Z,E and Z,Z was comparable to a tenfold lower dose of (E,E)-8,10-dodecadienol. This neuron type also responded to the four behaviorally antagonistic isomers of (Δ,Δ)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate, among which it was most sensitive to the E,E isomer. Cross-adaptation studies showed that these compounds were all detected by the same receptor neuron type. Receptor neurons specifically tuned to (E,Z) or (Z,Z)-8,10-dodecadienol were not found, although these two compounds are behaviorally active. A second type of receptor neuron responded to all isomers of (Δ,Δ)-8,10-dodecadienyl acetate and was most sensitive to the E,E isomer. This neuron type did not respond to any of the isomers of (Δ,Δ)-8,10-dodecadienol. A third receptor neuron type was highly sensitive to the plant compound α-farnesene. The finding that the receptor neuron type tuned to the main pheromone compound responded even to strong behavioral antagonists aids the interpretation of ongoing behavioral studies for the development of the mating disruption technique in codling moth. Perception of cutaneous heating and cooling depends strongly on stimulus size. Although this dependence has been attributed solely to spatial summation, topographical variations in temperature sensitivity may also play a role. These variations, which differentially affect perception of small stimuli, may have led to overestimation of spatial summation. This possibility was investigated by measuring detection thresholds and perceived intensity for heating and cooling on the volar surface of the forearm using a multiple-thermode stimulus array. By keeping the array in place throughout each testing session we were able to measure threshold sensitivity and suprathreshold responsiveness at eight individual sites and for combinations of these sites having total stimulus areas of 0.64-5.12 cm2. When spatial summation was calculated in the traditional way by averaging the data for all stimuli of each size, the results agreed closely with previous estimates of summation for warmth and cold. When calculations were based instead on the most sensitive test site for each stimulus size, estimates of summation were reduced by about two-thirds. This outcome indicates that the spatial heterogeneity of thermal sensitivity likely contributed to estimates of spatial summation reported in earlier psychophysical studies. A schematic model of cutaneous thermoreception is presented that shows how neural summation and the density of innervation may combine to produce the psychophysical effects of increasing stimulus size (spatial enhancement).  相似文献

ObjectivesAdaptive steepest descent projection onto convex sets (ASD-POCS) algorithms with Lp-norm (0 < p ≤ 1) regularization have shown great promise in sparse-view X-ray CT reconstruction. However, the difference in p value selection can lead to varying algorithm performance of noise and resolution. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a reliable method to evaluate the resolution and noise properties of the ASD-POCS algorithms under different Lp-norm priors.MethodsA comparative performance evaluation of ASD-POCS algorithms under different Lp-norm (0 < p ≤ 2) priors were performed in terms of modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectrum (NPS) and noise equivalent quanta (NEQ). Simulation data sets from the EGSnrc/BEAMnrc Monte Carlo system and an actual mouse data set were used for algorithms comparison.ResultsA considerable MTF improvement can be achieved with the decrement of p. L1 regularization based algorithm obtains the best noise performance, and shows superiority in NEQ evaluation. The advantage of L1-norm prior is also confirmed by the reconstructions from the actual mouse data set through contrast to noise ratio (CNR) comparison.ConclusionAlthough the ASD-POCS algorithms using small Lp-norm (p ≤ 0.5) priors yield a higher MTF than do the high Lp-norms, the best noise-resolution performance is achieved when p is between 0.8 and 1. The results are expected to be a reference to the choice of p in Lp-norm (0 < p ≤ 2) regularization.  相似文献

Patch clamp recordings have been made from adult locust (Schistocerca gregaria) muscle membrane to study the mechanosensitivity of potassium channels (BK and IK) in cell-attached patches by transiently applying measured pressures to the contents of the patch pipettes. The aim of the investigations was to demonstrate a novel gating behaviour by pressure of the BK channel in contrast to the familiar behaviour of the IK channel. The open probability (p 0) of the IK channel increased rapidly in response to a pressure step and monotonically during a pressure ramp. This gating was readily repeatable and rapidly reversible. The relationship between ln[p 0/(1–p 0)] and transmembrane pressure was linear. In comparison, p 0 for the BK channel was also increased by pressure, but its gating was delayed, cumulative, and hysteretic. Abstract

Bromlichnus bromleyi n.igen. n.isp., a compound trace fossil consisting of two segments representing dwelling and feeding, is described. Owing to a concentric spreite in a bow-shaped burrow, B. bromleyi is interpreted as made by holothurians. In most cases, it is connected to a repichnion. The new ichnotaxon derives from the narrow Pfalzpaint Subbasin of the Solnhofen archipelago (Upper Jurassic, SE Germany), interpreted as a tidal channel connecting two basins. The interrelationships of different behaviours reflected in compound trace fossils allow holistic analysis of the work of individual animals, enabling more accurate interpretation of tracemaker anatomy and function.  相似文献

Most bees are diurnal, with behaviour that is largely visually mediated, but several groups have made evolutionary shifts to nocturnality, despite having apposition compound eyes unsuited to vision in dim light. We compared the anatomy and optics of the apposition eyes and the ocelli of the nocturnal carpenter bee, Xylocopa tranquebarica, with two sympatric species, the strictly diurnal X. leucothorax and the occasionally crepuscular X. tenuiscapa. The ocelli of the nocturnal X. tranquebarica are unusually large (diameter ca. 1 mm) and poorly focussed. Moreover, their apposition eyes show specific visual adaptations for vision in dim light, including large size, large facets and very wide rhabdoms, which together make these eyes 9 times more sensitive than those of X. tenuiscapa and 27 times more sensitive than those of X. leucothorax. These differences in optical sensitivity are surprisingly small considering that X. tranquebarica can fly on moonless nights when background luminance is as low as 10−5 cd m−2, implying that this bee must employ additional visual strategies to forage and find its way back to the nest. These strategies may include photoreceptors with longer integration times and higher contrast gains as well as higher neural summation mechanisms for increasing visual reliability in dim light.  相似文献

Measurements of unidirectional fluxes in ion channels provide one of the experimental methods for studying the steps involved in ion permeation in biological pores. Conventionally, the number of ions in the pore is inferred by fitting the ratio of inward and outward currents to an exponential function with an adjustable parameter known as the flux ratio exponent. Here we investigate the relationship between the number of ions in the pore and the flux ratio exponent in a model sodium channel under a range of conditions. Brownian dynamics simulations enable us to count the precise number of ions in the channel and at the same time measure the currents flowing across the pore in both directions. We show here that the values of the flux ratio exponent n′ ranges between 1 and 3 and is highly dependent on the ionic concentrations in which measurements are made. This is a consequence of the fact that both inward and outward currents are susceptible to saturation with increasing concentration. These results indicate that measurements of the flux ratio exponent cannot be directly related to the number of ions in the pore and that interpretation of such experimental measurements requires careful consideration of the conditions in which the study is made.  相似文献

Simple reaction time is the minimum time required to respond to a signal such as a steady light or tone. Such a reaction time is taken to be the time required for transmission of a fixed quantity of information, ΔH, from stimulus to subject. That is, information summation replaces energy summation. This information is calculated from consideration of the quantum nature of the stimulus. The theoretically derived equation for reaction time is fitted to experimental data. Piéron's empirical law for reaction time is obtained as an approximation from a proposed informational equation. The exponent in Piéron's law is found to be the same as the exponent in the power law of sensation. Threshold appears to be the smallest stimulus capable of transmitting the quantity of information ΔH.  相似文献

Juvenile bird migrants are generally believed to use a clock‐and‐compass migratory orientation strategy. According to such a strategy migrants accomplish their migration by flying a number of successive flight steps with direction and number of steps controlled by an endogenous programme. One powerful way of testing this is by comparing predictions from a model of such a strategy with observed patterns. We used data from ringing and satellite‐based radio telemetry to investigate the orientation system of juvenile ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) and honey buzzards (Pernis apivorus) migrating from Sweden to tropical west Africa. The ring recoveries showed a much larger scatter in the orientation of ospreys than of honey buzzards, but there was only a slight such difference in the satellite tracks. These tracks of individuals of both species were rather straight with a high directional concentration per step. The honey buzzard data showed a close fit to a simple vector summation model, which is expected if birds follow a clock‐and‐compass strategy. However, the osprey data did not fit such a simple model, as ring recoveries showed a significantly greater deviation at short distances than predicted on the basis of long distance data. Satellite tracking also indicated less concentrated orientation on short distances. The pattern observed for the osprey can generally be explained by an extended vector summation model, including an important element of pre‐migration dispersal. The existence of extensive dispersal in the osprey stands in contrast to the apparent absence of such dispersal in the honey buzzard. The explanation for this difference between the species is unclear. The model of orientation by vector summation is very sensitive to the existence of differences in mean direction between individuals. Assuming such differences, as tentatively indicated by the satellite tracking data, makes simple compass orientation by vector summation inconsistent with the distribution of ring recoveries at long distances, with a high proportion of misoriented birds falling outside the normal winter range.  相似文献

Typical angiosperm dicot leaves are discovered closely associated with reproductive organs of Sinocarpus decussatus from the Yixian Formation, NE China. Leaves are of first rank, small, with fine texture, and with distinct petiole and lamina. Venation pattern is craspedodromous, of at least three discrete orders of veins irregularly arranged. Leaf margin is serrate, with glandular teeth of chloranthoid type. The new Sinocarpus material is better preserved and more complete than the type specimen. It yields support for previous interpretations of reproductive characters and shows that the inflorescences were compound, perhaps combining alternate and opposite phyllotaxis, and that seeds were arranged in two rows, each row with about ten seeds. While these new reproductive characters do not provide further resolution to the systematic assignment of Sinocarpus, the associated leaves, believed to be from the same plant, support previous interpretation of Sinocarpus as a basal eudicot, and particularly close to Ranunculales.  相似文献

Beck, Jennifer, Christer Sinderby, Lars Lindström, andAlex Grassino. Diaphragm interference pattern EMG and compound muscle action potentials: effects of chest wall configuration. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(2): 520-530, 1997.The effect of chest wall configuration on the diaphragmelectromyogram (EMGdi) was evaluated in five healthy subjects with anesophageal electrode for both interference pattern EMGdi (voluntarycontractions) and electrically evoked diaphragm compound muscle actionpotentials (CMAPs). Diaphragm CMAPs (both unilateral and bilateral)were evaluated for the baseline-to-peak amplitude (Ampl), the time fromthe onset of the CMAP to first peak (T1), root mean square (RMS), andcenter frequency (CF) values of the CMAP power spectrum. CF values fromthe interference pattern EMGdi power spectrum were also calculated. ForCMAPs obtained at an electrode position least influenced by variationsinduced by electrode positioning, Ampl increased with diaphragmshortening from functional residual capacity (FRC) to total lungcapacity (TLC) by 101 and 98% (unilateral and bilateral, respectively). Bilateral CMAP RMS values increased 116% from FRC toTLC. CMAP T1 values decreased with diaphragm shortening from FRC to TLC by 1.1 and 2.1 ms for the unilateral and bilateral stimulations, respectively, and CF increased for the bilateral diaphragm CMAPs withdiaphragm shortening. CF values from the interference pattern EMGdi didnot show any consistent change with chest wall configuration. Thus CFvalues of the interference pattern EMGdi obtained with an esophagealelectrode can be considered reliable for physiological interpretation,at any diaphragm length (if electrode positioning and signalcontamination are controlled for), contrary to the diaphragm CMAPs,which are sensitive to changes in chest wall configuration. It isspeculated that the different results (over the effects of chest wallconfiguration on interference pattern EMGdi and diaphragm CMAPs) may bebecause of summation properties of the signals and how these influencethe EMG power spectrum.

The ability of observers to detect temporal gaps in bursts of sinusoids or bursts of band-limited noise was measured to assess the temporal acuity of Pacinian (P) and non-Pacinian (NP) tactile information processing channels. The P channel was isolated by delivering high frequency sinusoids or high frequency noise through a large 1.5-cm2 contactor to the thenar eminence. The NP channels were isolated from the P channel by delivering these stimuli as well as stimuli with lower frequencies through a small 0.01-cm2 contactor to the same site. Gap detection thresholds were higher for gaps in noise than for gaps in sinusoids but did not differ among conditions designed to isolate P and NP channels. The finding that temporal acuity does not differ among channels supports the hypothesis that, after termination of a stimulus, the P and NP channels exhibit the same amount of neural persistence. Also consistent with this hypothesis are the earlier findings that the enhancement of the sensation magnitude of a stimulus by a prior stimulus (Verrillo and Gescheider, Percept Psychophys 18: 128–136, 1975) and the duration of sensation after the termination of a stimulus (Gescheider et al., J Acoust Soc Am 91: 1690–1696, 1992) are independent of stimulus frequency. One important implication of this hypothesis, if true, is that the presence of temporal summation in the P channel and its absence in the NP channels, results, not from the lack of neural persistence in the NP channels, but instead, in marked contrast to the P channel, from the lack of a mechanism for integrating persistent neural activity over time.  相似文献
