Feeding ecology of any species can help us to understand its natural history, ecological requirements and approaches involved in searching for food. Feeding ecology and sexual dimorphism in the horned viper, Cerastes cerastes gasperetti collected from the Al-Thumama area, central region of Saudi Arabia was described. The gut content of Cerastes c. gasperetti mainly consisted of rodents (70%) in addition to arthropods (15%) and lizards (10%). Least sexual size dimorphism was noticed in the species in terms of total length. Significant difference was noticed between males and females in terms of two correlation points vent tail length (VT) and total length (TL) with the males attaining a larger size (P < 0.05). The mean number of the dorsal body scales, ventrals and subcaudals for the females was 102, 156 and 33 scales respectively which were significantly different from respective ones in males 95, 160 and 38 scales. There are many aspects of the feeding of this snake that remain unknown and further studies are clearly needed.  相似文献

Morphological variations in bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus, including growth-related changes, sexual dimorphism and morphological differences between populations in different habitats, were examined in samples from three reservoirs in Kagawa, Japan. Body measurements demonstrated frequent growth-related proportional changes, particularly in body depth, body width, caudal peduncle length and head length, which all showed relative increases, whereas first dorsal fin length, caudal fin length and orbital diameter became relatively shorter. Body weight increased relatively with growth, with relative growth coefficients of 3.339–3.454 for regressions between total length and body weight. Such body weight increases were likely due to the relative increases in body depth and width, and caudal peduncle depth. Although counts of fin spines, fin rays and gill rakers did not change with growth, those of scales tended to increase. Males were significantly larger than females in body depth, caudal peduncle length, head length and body weight. Sexual dimorphism was also apparent in body coloration during the breeding season. In addition, a number of morphological differences were observed between individuals from different habitats.  相似文献

The rise of molecular techniques in the study of evolutionary histories has resulted in a gradual abandonment of morphological characters as the only sources of phylogenetic inference. However, morphological characters may be valuable for phylogenetic reconstruction, especially for tracking adaptive changes across phylogeographic groups defined by genetic markers. We examined the discriminative power of morphological characters between four mitochondrial clades covering almost the entire distribution area of the smooth snake Coronella girondica in the Western Mediterranean. We detected three characters showing sexual dimorphism (relative tail length, number of ventral and of subcaudal scale counts) and, more interestingly, two characters (number of subcaudal and of dorsal rows) displaying interclade differences. Almost all C. girondica examined had 21 dorsal rows except those from a narrow coastal belt in the south-eastern Iberian Peninsula, which had 19 dorsal rows. The distribution of these specimens matches a mitochondrial clade that originated approximately 1.4–2.0 million years ago. Both of these morphological characters support a Betic lineage with a rather well-defined contact zone with the other Iberian lineage, which has been maintained even without the existence of current geographic barriers. The long-term survival of the Betic lineage throughout the Pleistocene climatic oscillations suggests a systematic revision within C. girondica.  相似文献

The legless locomotion of snakes requires specific adaptations of their ventral scales to maintain friction force in different directions. The skin microornamentation of the snake Corallus hortulanus was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy and the friction properties of the skin were tested on substrates of different roughness. Skin samples from various parts of the body (dorsal, lateral, ventral) were compared. Dorsal and lateral scales showed similar, net-like microornamentation and similar friction coefficients. Average friction coefficients for dorsal and lateral scales on the epoxy resin surfaces were 0.331 and 0.323, respectively. In contrast, ventral scales possess ridges running parallel to the longitudinal body axis. They demonstrated a significantly lower friction coefficient compared to both dorsal and lateral scales (0.191 on average). In addition, ventral scales showed frictional anisotropy comparing longitudinal and perpendicular direction of the ridges. This study clearly demonstrates that different skin microstructure is responsible for different frictional properties in different body regions.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that a somatofugal wave of atrophy moving distally in the axon of primary sensory neurons leads to loss of myelinated nerve fibers in acrylamide neuropathy, rats (N = 18) were intoxicated with an initial dose of 75 mg acrylamide per kg body weight followed by daily treatment with 30 mg/kg for three, six and 12 days. Ten age matched saline treated rats served as controls. Numbers and mean volumes of A- and B-cell perikarya of the L5 dorsal root ganglion, numbers of myelinated axons and the mean cross sectional myelinated axon area 3 and 18 mm from the ganglion in the dorsal root and in the sural nerve were estimated using stereological techniques. After three days no changes in the number or size of primary sensory perikarya or myelinated axons were observed. However, after six days 11% of the A-cell perikarya showed signs of chromatolysis (P < 0.001). After 12 days the rats showed signs of ataxia and 23% (P < 0.001) of A-cell perikarya were chromatolytic. There was a tendency for atrophy of the mean perikaryal volume of A-cells (2P = 0.059). The size-frequency distributions of axonal area of myelinated fibers in the dorsal root 3 mm from the ganglion were displaced to the left towards smaller sizes (25–50% quartile: 2P < 0.005 and 75–100% quartile: 2P < 0.05). In conclusion, the primary structural event in acute acrylamide intoxication is chromatolysis of A-cells of the dorsal root ganglion without the occurrence of somatofugal axonal atrophy.  相似文献

European badgers, Meles meles, possess a large subcaudal gland which is used for scent-marking the territory and other members of the clan. It was shown experimentally that a badger can distinguish secretions from different individuals. Dominant males scent-mark most, and lactating females more than other females. Scent-marks are distributed along the border of the territory, on bedding materials and around the sett, and on all members of the clan, especially females and cubs. The data support, in many details, the hypothesis that scent-making in badgers serves to establish an asymmetry of contest during encounters with intruders.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated gonadal control of mammalian scent glands; castration leads to reduced scent-marking rates and smaller gland sizes. I investigated whether gonadal hormones control the size of the dorsal gland (a specialized sebaceous gland) and sandbathing as a scent-marking behavior in adult male and female bannertail kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis). Gland sizes of males and females were similar in all age classes, except adult males with larger body weights had proportionately larger glands than females. Male gland sizes declined 18% following castration but were not significantly smaller than those of intact males; females showed no change in dorsal gland size either as a result of ovariectomy or after estradiol benzoate implants. Sandbathing rates also did not decline as a result of gonadectomy. Rather, castrated males and overiectomized females sandbathed at higher frequencies than intact males and ovariectomized females with estradiol benzoate implants, respectively. Gonadal hormones apparently have little influence on the function of a specialized scent gland and may inhibit sandbathing as a scent-marking behavior in adult D. spectabilis.  相似文献

Bionomic aspects of Stomoxys calcitrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Diptera: Muscidae) were studied under laboratory conditions. For this reason, laboratory-rearing techniques were optimized at the National Veterinary School of Toulouse. The colony was maintained at 25 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 10% RH under a 12-hour light cycle and observed daily. The size of each adult cage is 30 x 30 x 30 cm and designed to house about 500-1,000 flies. The average cycle from egg to adult was 19.2 ± 1.7 days. The mean longevity of imagos was 9.3 ± 5.8 days and not significantly different between sexes. Stable flies were split into two groups; the first was fed with blood, honey and water, and the second was fed only with honey and water. The mean weight of a blood meal was 11.1 ± 3.8 mg with no significant differences between males and females. The mean longevity of non-blood fed flies was found to be significantly higher (10.4 ± 3.9 days) than those fed with blood. The maximum lifespan was shorter for non-blood fed males (17 days) and females (18 days) than for those fed with blood (females: 24 days, males: 23 days). Under these laboratory conditions, S. calcitrans rearing was successfully established. In the end, the number of expected generations of S. calcitrans and the net reproduction rate were estimated to be 11.8 generations/year and 16.2 living females per female respectively.  相似文献

A new species of damselfish, Abudefduf nigrimargo (Pomacentridae), is described on the basis of six specimens (91.8–119.5 mm standard length; SL) from Taiwan. Although similar to A. caudobimaculatus Okada and Ikeda 1939, A. saxatilis (Linnaeus 1758), A. troschelii (Gill 1862) and A. vaigiensis (Quoy and Gaimard 1825) in having five dark bands on the lateral surface of the body with yellowish interspaces dorsally, the new species can be distinguished from the others by the following combination of characters: 18–19 (mode 19) pectoral-fin rays; 20–23 (22) tubed lateral-line scales; 7–8 (7)?+?14–16 (16)?=?21–24 (23) gill rakers; relatively greater body depth and longer pectoral-fin length [57.3–60.8% (mean 59.0%) of SL and 36.8–40.8% (38.5%) of SL, respectively]; 5 scale rows on cheek; scales on suborbit, usually continuous over basal area of lacrimal; many scales on anteroventral region of head; scale covering on preopercle and interopercle continuous; scales on dorsal and lateral body surfaces with blackish margin (indistinct in subadult), second and third black bands on body not extending dorsally onto membranes of spinous dorsal fin; anterior and upper margins of fourth black band usually level with sixth dorsal-fin soft ray base and not extending onto small scales on the dorsal-fin base, respectively; and caudal-fin base without black spots.  相似文献

To evaluate taxonomic and genetic variation in Odontamblyopus lacepedii collected in East Asia, morphometric characters and molecular analysis were described. The body was ribbon-like. The body and head were grayish-purple with no embedded scales. Eyes were rudimentary, but distinct, covered by skin. The dorsal and anal fins were continuous with the caudal fin. The edges of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins were dark chocolate-brown. Genetic analysis of four species revealed higher mean A + T (55.4%) than G + C (44.6%). Twenty-two haplotype sequences were identified, containing 22 haplotypes, 131 variable sites and 122 parsimony-informative sites, with haplotype and nucleotide diversity differing among species. The intraspecies genetic distances ranged from 0.2% to 0.5% (average 0.3%) and interspecies differences from 1.1% to 17.6% (average 14.6%), respectively, indicating that these four species of Amblyopinae can be accurately identified. The NJ tree constructed using COI fragments based on 22 haplotypes was composed of two main branches: the upper branch comprising O. lacepedii and O. sp. showing a close relationship, with Trypauchen vagina and Ctenotrypauchen microcephalus clustering on the second branch. Thus, the results validated the identification of O. lacepedii at the morphological and genetic level.  相似文献

We review the distribution, morphology and taxonomic status of Eryx elegans, E. jaculus, E. miliaris, E. tataricus and E. johnii in Iran and examine four metric and 10 meristic characters of 94 specimens from different parts of the country. There are significant morphological differences between Eryx tataricus, E. jaculus and E. elegans, mainly in snout vent length, tail length, and number of ventrals, subcaudals and dorsal scales. Eryx jayakari and E. johnii can easily be distinguished based on their morphological traits and limited distribution in Iran. The occurrence of E. miliaris in Iran was not confirmed. The Iranian populations of Eryx jaculus are assigned to the subspecies E. j. turcicus. E. jaculus specimens from southwestern Iran had higher ventral scales than other populations, so evaluating their taxonomic status needs genetic studies in the future. A distribution map and a revised key to the genus Eryx in Iran are presented.  相似文献

Life-history traits of Acrossocheilus fasciatus were examined using 384 specimens collected monthly during May 2009 and April 2010 in the Huishui Stream of the Qingyi watershed, China. Using scales for age determination, female and male fish comprised five and four age groups, respectively. The monthly changes in marginal increment ratio suggested that annuli on scales were formed during March through May. Total lengths back-calculated significantly increased with age for both sexes and varied significantly between the two sexes at each age. The fact that females had larger body size and grew faster than males indicated the sexual size dimorphism for this species. Both sexes got their 50% maturity at age 3, when females and males were 105.3 and 112.1?mm total length, respectively. Based on the monthly changes in the gonado-somatic index and egg-development process, fish spawned from April through August. Absolute fecundity ranged from 295 to 3,573 eggs per fish and increased significantly with age. But relative fecundity, ranging from 11.77 to 69.96?eggs/g, was not significantly different among age groups. Compared with the life-history traits of an upstream population in the Puxi Stream (a headwater stream within this study watershed), the downstream population of A. fasciatus in the Huishui Stream (a 4th-order stream) exhibits larger body size, faster somatic growth, later sexual maturity, and lower reproductive investment. These variations in life-history strategies between the two populations could perhaps be explained by the spatial heterogeneity in habitat environment along the upstream–downstream gradient in this watershed.  相似文献

The rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis Walker, overwinters in China as a larva in facultative diapause. The instars and body weights of overwintering larvae vary widely. In this paper, the relationships between body weight and supercooling capacity, diapause intensity and post-diapause reproductive potential of overwintering larvae collected in late-stage rice field were examined. There was a significant positive correlation between body weight, instar, and head capsule width, thus the overwintering larvae were divided into five groups based on body weight (I, up to 35.0 mg; II, 35.1-57.0 mg; III, 57.1-79.0 mg; IV, 79.1-101.0 mg; and V, over 101.1 mg) for further analysis. The body water content of the lighter group (I) was significantly higher than that of the heavier groups (IV-V). However, the mean supercooling point decreased with an increase of the mean larval body weight in five groups; mean supercooling point of group I was significantly lower than that of group V, except in January 2009. After transfer of overwintering larvae to 15, 20 and 25 °C on different dates, smaller individuals pupated slightly faster than larger ones at the same temperature, suggesting that diapause was less intense in smaller overwintering larvae. On 19 March 2009 there was a strong positive correlation between larval body weight and the weight of 3 day-old pupae, and the number of eggs carried by 2 day-old adult females at 15, 20 and 25 °C. The average number of eggs carried by 2 day-old adult females differed significantly among different groups. The average number of eggs carried by 2 day-old adult females in group V was significantly greater than those of other groups, and that of group I was significantly lower than those of other groups, suggesting that post-diapause reproductive potential was determined, to a certain extent, by body weight of the overwintering larvae.  相似文献

Female preference for male fin elaborations in Poeciliid fishes may be driven by a sensory bias for increased lateral projection area (LPA) that has existed since the lineages diverged from a common ancestor. Previous research supports this hypothesis demonstrating female Poecilia latipinna, Poecilia mexicana, and Poecilia reticulata prefer males of larger body and dorsal fin size, but exhibit no such preferences when controlling for total LPA. In the current study, we further tested this hypothesis by presenting female platys, Xiphophorus variatus, with pairs of dummy males differing in: (1) body size (holding dorsal fin size constant); (2) dorsal fin size (holding body size constant); and (3) dorsal fin: body size ratio (holding total LPA constant). Females spent more time near dummies of greater body and dorsal fin size; however, in the third experiment, neither fin size, body size, nor any particular dorsal fin + body size combination was preferred. These results provide additional support for the LPA and sensory bias hypotheses, demonstrating that female X. variatus not only prefer males with “swords”, but sailfin-like dorsal fins as well when body size is held constant. Shared preference for increased LPA is consistent with common ancestry of the sensory/neural systems in females of all four species.  相似文献

Temperature is a key environmental factor for ectotherms and affects a large number of life history traits. In the present study, development time from hatching to pupation and adult eclosion, pupal and adult weights of the rice stem borer, Chilo suppressalis were examined at 22, 25, 28 and 31 °C under L18:D 6. Larval and pupal times were significantly decreased with increasing rearing temperature and growth rate was positively correlated with temperature. Larval and pupal developmental times were not significantly different between females and males. The relationship between body weight and rearing temperature in C. suppressalis did not follow the temperature–size rule (TSR), both males and females gained the highest body weight at 31 °C. Females were significantly larger than males at all temperatures, showing a female biased sex size dimorphism (SSD). Contrary to Rensch's rule, SSD and body weight in C. suppressalis tended to increase with rising temperature. Male pupae lost significantly more weight at metamorphosis compared to females. We discuss the adaptive significance of the reverse-TSR in the moth's life history.  相似文献

Peromyscus leucopus populations exhibit unstable population dynamics. Mathematical models predict instability with chronic parasite infections that reduce host fecundity when the parasite distribution within the host population is close to random. We examined the role the nematode Pterygodermatites peromysci may play in influencing the dynamics of these mice. There were seven gastrointestinal worms infecting mice. Pterygodermatites peromysci was the most prevalent and varied seasonally from 12.3% in November to 36.0% in July. Prevalence was higher in adults (30.8%) than juveniles (4.6%) and there were no statistical differences in prevalence or intensity between the sexes. Overall the distribution was random; the relationship between log variance and log mean of P. peromysci intensity from 17 sites was not significantly different from unity. There were significant relationships between infection and breeding condition, suggesting parasites could be the cause of reduced female breeding. A generalized linear model found the likelihood of P. peromysci infection in adults increased with body mass, the presence of other helminths, and when hosts were in breeding condition. Likewise, the intensity of infection was positively related to co-infections and body mass. Pterygodermatites peromysci infection was associated with the presence of the oxyurid nematode Syphacia peromysci but co-infection was lower in females than males. Amongst females, co-infection was greater when breeding, particularly during lactation. The P. peromysci age-intensity relationship increased with age and rose to an asymptote as expected for a parasite with constant mortality and no acquired immunity. Overall, P. peromysci had a random distribution and was associated with reduced breeding; we discuss how these destabilizing processes may influence the dynamics of P. leucopus.  相似文献

The skin of geckos is covered with countless microscopic protuberances (spines). This surface structure causes low wettability to water. During evolution, representatives of the recent gekkotan clade Pygopodidae started slithering on the ground. This manner of locomotion affected limb reduction resulting in a snake-like body. Regarding abrasion and frictional properties, a surface covered with gekkotan spines is a topography that hampers the snake-like locomotion mode. Using scanning electron microscopy, we investigated the shed skins of two pygopodid lizards, Lialis jicari (Papua snake lizard) and Lialis burtonis (Burton''s legless lizard), in order to show epidermal adaptations to limbless locomotion. Our data showed that Pygopodidae differ from their relatives not only anatomically, but also in their epidermal microstructure. Scales of L. jicari have five different structural patterns on various body regions. Ventral scales have nanoridges, similar to those found on the ventralia of snakes. Surfaces of scales covering the jaw bones, have flattened spine-like microstructures that might be an adaptation to reduce abrasion. Dorsal scales have oblong microscopic bulges covered with nanoridges. Spines cover the undersides and the interstices of scales over the entire body of both species and in L. jicari also the top of dorsal head scales. Our measurements of surface wettability (surface free energy) show superhydrophobic properties of the spiny surfaces in comparison with the other microstructural patterns of other body parts.  相似文献

An anadromous population (trachurus form) and three freshwater populations (leiurus form) of the three-spined stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus, in central Japan were compared with one another in the reproductive traits: body length at maturity, egg size, clutch size, the swell of abdomen and the number of eggs per nest. The anadromous fish which become larger in body size at maturity spawn eggs smaller in size and greater in number than the freshwater fish. The abdomen swell of gravid females expressed by the proportion of abdomen width to body length was greater in the freshwater fish. The anadromous male fish collected a mean of 2,638 eggs with a range of 1,119 to 4,052 eggs from about 6–7 females. In the three freshwater (the Yamayoke, the Tsuya and the Jizo) populations, males must have mated with about 9–22, 7–18 and 4–7 females respectively. It seems that theleiurus form increases its reproductive success by its much more mating opportunities and the parental efforts of nesting males as well as by spawning large eggs. Furthermore, among the freshwater populations, the Jizo one inhabiting the upper stream was clearly larger in body size, in egg size and in clutch size than the Yamayoke and the Tsuya ones which inhabit stable waterbodies with springs. It is possible that the Jizo population adopted the strategy of spawning a few large eggs as an adaptation to its habitat. The causal and functional explanations in reproductive characteristics among the four populations are discussed in regard to differences in the environmental conditions.  相似文献

The Chungan ground lizard, Takydromus sylvaticus, long known only from five females collected in Fujian Province of China, was recently found in Anhui Province of the country. The newly collected specimens included the first male specimens (n=7), in which the tail bases were stouter than in conspecific females. Ventral scales in these males were invariably keeled, whereas in females those forming the four median rows were smooth. Females had more dorsal scales (47-48) than males (42-43) in the median longitudinal row between axilla and groin. Takydromus sylvaticus differed from the closely related T. dorsalis in having more dorsal scales in the median longitudinal row between axilla and groin (42-48 versus 32-40, respectively), more rows of large dorsal scales between the hind legs (10 versus 7-8, respectively), shorter hind legs, two distinct white longitudinal stripes on each side of the body, and no black stripe in the preocular and postocular regions. The number of transverse rows of ventral scales between collar and femoral pores in T. sylvaticus (26-28) was larger, but with a slight overlap, than that in T. dorsalis (22-26). Ecological observations on T. sylvaticus were also documented.  相似文献
