Brill-Zinsser disease: report of a case in Canada

This report documents the occurrence of Brill-Zinsser disease in a 48-year-old woman who experienced typhus fever in a German concentration camp. This is the first report of a case of recrudescent typhus in a European immigrating to Canada following World War II. The last reported case of Brill-Zinsser disease in Canada occurred in 1953.     

Selective abortion in Brazil: the anencephaly case

This paper discusses the Brazilian Supreme Court ruling on the case of anencephaly. In Brazil, abortion is a crime against the life of a fetus, and selective abortion of non-viable fetuses is prohibited. Following a paradigmatic case discussed by the Brazilian Supreme Court in 2004, the use of abortion was authorized in the case of a fetus with anencephaly. The objective of this paper is to analyze the ethical arguments of the case, in particular the strategy of avoiding the moral status of the fetus, the cornerstone thesis of the Catholic Church.     

An unusual presentation of paracoccidioidomycosis in an AIDS patient: A case report

A case of paracoccidioidomycosis presenting as a solitary pulmonary nodular lesion in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is presented. This case illustrates that restricted lung lesions can also be found and diagnosed in immunodeficient patients. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

A real time finite element based tissue simulation method incorporating nonlinear elastic behavior

This paper presents a new finite element simulation approach for surgical simulators. Based on the solution of the algebraic equations derived from a nonlinear elastic model, we propose a real time simulation rule based on the implicit relation between the displacements of contacted and free nodes. This rule is an analytic expression in the linear case, and an approximation of the implicit relation in the non-linear case. We also remove some of the restrictions on flexibility exhibited by previous linear and nonlinear approaches. In the linear case, real time reconfiguration of the contacted nodes and the boundary constraints is realized using the simulation rule, while in the nonlinear case, a similar result is obtained by employing affine mapping. These methods allow nonlinear material properties to be applied to real time tissue simulation, with an efficiency comparable to that of the tensor matrix method for linear elastic models.     

Oncocytic adenoma of the nasal cavity. A case report

The authors present a case of benign oncocytoma (oxyphil cell adenoma) of the nasal cavity in a young woman. This is the fifth case reported in that region. Immunohistochemical stains revealed positivity only for cytokeratin.     

Waste Costing as a Catalyst in Pollution Prevention Investment Decisions

This article presents a case study in a Nigerian firm of how waste costing can be applied to pollution prevention (P2) investment decisions. This case is informed by the priority accorded to P2 as a preferred alternative to end‐of‐pipe pollution control. It demonstrates that even in the absence of effective regulations in a developing country, cost accounting can spur P2 decisions by management through the system of waste cost allocation. The case used standard cost data from the Wonder Beauty Care Company and applied the activity‐based costing (ABC) system to waste cost allocation using waste cost drivers, which yielded another genre of waste costs—waste‐induced overhead. Subsequently, the waste‐induced overhead was applied to P2 investment analysis. This analysis indicated that the P2 investment alternative that incorporates the waste‐induced overhead produced a preferred alternative choice. The case further revealed that managers’ knowledge of waste costs in a Nigerian firm may influence their P2 decisions. The case illustrates practically a possible dual advantage of an improved costing system for Nigerian firms—cost reduction and cleaner production.     

Nonparametric Location Tests Based on the Empirical Distribution

We present a unified approach to the nonparametric comparison of locations in the one- and two sample case using the empirical distribution functions. This approach reveals how to define a simple test statistic for this comparison in the case of large sample sizes which is equivalent to the known Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney statistics and is based on the grouping of the data. In the particular case of equal group sizes we find an extremely simple form for this location test.     

An unusual pulmonary and renal presentation of echinococcosis. Report of a case

Echinococcosis, although relatively rare in North America, is becoming more prevalent. The rapid diagnosis of hydatid disease, using a noninvasive approach, is highly desirable. This paper describes a rare case of simultaneous pulmonary and renal echinococcosis, without demonstrable liver involvement, diagnosed by cytologic examination of a bronchial aspirate and sputum. This case emphasizes the importance of cytologic evaluation of a variety of body fluids to diagnose multiorgan infection by Echinococcus granulosus.     

Pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis in a nine year old girl

A case of pulmonary paracoccidioidomycosis in a nine year old girl is reported. This is the first proven case of exclusive pulmonary paracoccidioidal lesions observed in a child. A review of the mycosis among children 0 to 10 years old is also presented.Bolsista de CNP_q     

Overcoming the challenge of venous occlusion for lead implantation

Vein stenosis or occlusion is a frequent finding in patients with previously-implanted transvenous leads. This editorial describes the different techniques that may be used to overcome this hurdle in case a new lead needs to be implanted, and discusses two case reports in this issue of the journal.     

Fine needle aspiration cytology of a large cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumor of the testis

A case of a large cell calcifying Sertoli cell tumor (LCCSCT) of the testis in a 7-year-old boy is presented. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic smears showed large polygonal tumor cells with abundant finely granular or vacuolated eosinophilic cytoplasm and eccentric nuclei with one distinct nucleolus. A variable amount of amorphous calcification was a constant feature. The light microscopic and ultrastructural features of the tumor cells supported a Sertoli cell origin of the tumor. This tumor is found frequently associated with complex endocrine disorders and usually has a benign course. This case, which appears to be the first such case diagnosed by FNA cytology, shows the efficacy of FNA cytology in the presurgical evaluation of testicular masses.     

A case of hookworm infestation in a Precolumbian American

A case of hookworm infestation in a Tiahuanaco mummy dating from around 900 A.D. is presented. The worms found in the small intestine were identified as Ancylostoma duodenale. This is the first recorded case of hookworm infestation in the Americas prior to the coming of Europeans.     

Further details of third recorded case of redwater (Babesiosis) in man

Clinical details and laboratory and postmortem findings of a human case of redwater (piroplasmosis or babesiosis) caused by Babesia divergens. This is the third proved case in man. All three patients had had splenectomies.     

Semantics of case

This paper presents a framework which connects case assignment with the semantics of argument realization. Broad notions of agency and affectedness are decomposed into more fine-grained semantic properties, loosely based on Dowty??s Proto-Role theory, but conceived in terms of privative opposition and organized into a lattice. This lattice provides a semantic space of participant properties and supports defining hierarchical relations among participant types, interpreted as semantic prominence, as well as topological relations such as ??closeness??, interpreted as semantic similarity between participant types. Cases are defined as connected regions of this space, relating a given case to a structured set of semantic properties. A case system is represented as a semantic system, which embodies oppositions and contrasts, and operates against the backdrop of the general semantics of argument realization, where one can define notions such as maximal agents and maximal patients and represent generalizations from the research on transitivity. Core case markers (e.g. ergative, accusative) are represented as subspaces of the lattice spreading outwards from the maximal agent and maximal patient nodes of the lattice. Case alternations arise when the subspace of the lattice delimited by a predicate??s entailments for an argument is partitioned by different cases, exemplified with the genitive/accusative alternation in Russian occurring with direct objects of certain intensional predicates. This method also provides a treatment of case polysemy, viz. a single case subsuming multiple uses, by relating the diverse uses at the more abstract semantic level of the case??s region on the lattice, demonstrated with non-canonical uses of the dative.     

Partial trisomy 13 due to t(X;13) translocation. Contribution of in situ hybridization

A new case of partial trisomy 13 through unbalanced de novo translocation t(X;13) is reported. In situ hybridization has been used to specify breakage points on the X chromosome. This case is cytogenetically comparable with another reported case; the phenotypical aspect of these two patients is however different. This discrepancy is discussed.     

Paleopathological study on malignant bone tumor in Japan. Differential diagnosis on osteolytic lesions in the skull

This report concerns a probable case of metastatic malignant bone tumor in the skull of a prehistoric skeleton from Honshu Island in Japan. In gross observation, a fragmental skull of an adult showed many osteolytic lesions without any healing processes which could be also ascertained by roentgenological studies. Besides this case, four cases with a diagnosis of malignant bone tumor have so far been reported among archeological skeletal remains in Japan. This case from the prehistoric "Jomon" period is certainly the oldest case showing such malignant tumorous change in the skeleton. In this report, the osteolytic changes in the "Jomon" skull are described in detail and compared with two other cases showing the same osteolytic changes. The morphology and distribution of the lesions as well as the sex and age of the individual are discussed to make an adequate differential diagnosis for malignant osteolytic lesions in the skeleton.     

Another case of 9P-syndrome.

This paper discusses the value of an International Repository of Chromosomal Abnormalities and Variants as a means of communication and case finding. A further case of 9p- is described. The clinical and cytogenetic findings confirm the existence of a clinical entity which in many respects is the opposite of the 9p trisomy syndrome.     

Third report of ocular parastrongyliasis (angiostrongyliasis) from Sri Lanka

A further case of ocular parastrongyliasis has been seen in a patient from Sri Lanka. As it is a juvenile female worm it could not be identified to the species, but it is probably Parastrongylus (= Angiostrongylus) cantonensis which is the commonly reported species in the country. This is the third authentic case of such an infection in Sri Lanka in recent years.     

Mycetoma caused by Exophiala jeanselmei. Report of a case successfully treated with itraconazole and review of the literature

We report a case of black grain mycetoma in a 74-years-old man who presented with a 50-yr. history of sinus-tract formation in the right foot. This is the first case of an Exophiala jeanselmeimycetoma successfully treated with itraconazole. In addition a review of the literature on this subject was done.     

Emphysematous pyelonephritis

A case of emphysematous pyelonephritis with perirenal gas is presented. This patient underwent vigorous medical treatment followed by nephrectomy and survived. This condition has a high mortality and should be distinguished from less severe infections where gas is confined to the collecting system. This case and others previously reported suggest that treatment should initially be medical, followed by early surgical intervention consisting of either drainage or nephrectomy depending upon the degree of renal involvement.
